Reviews of TAKAHASHI
A. H.
we came for the premium omakase, and it was as amazing as it sounds.
the food was so exquisite, flavours were so balanced and clean. nothing was pretentious or overly frilly fancy, every ingredient spoke for itself and shined with each other. really beautiful meal, amazing melt in the mouth sushi, the wagyu was beautifully juicy, and the dessert was a great end to the meal. even the mushrooms were full of flavour.
the restaurant represented its food — simple, unassuming, but quality above all else. we could choose our sake cups, and sushi was served with a brush for soy sauce and a wet towel for your fingers (sushi counter style). guidance for every course was given to maximize enjoyment, and the service was amazingly attentive, but not intrusive at all.
10/10, if you *love* japanese food, this is a must visit.

This place bets their all on the food and it definitely pays off. The food is simply of a tier that is rare to find in London; compared to other high-end Japanese places, the quality and complexity of Takahashi’s dishes really shows.
We ordered the omakase and all the dishes were very thoughtful and elegantly showcased the Japanese style. Sushi in particular was as good as you get in Japan. Also very competitive in terms of value.
Decor and service is simple and a complement to the cuisine - no need for over-the-top extras here.

My husband took me on Wednesday and to say that it was an absolute treat would be a complete understatement! I have never been able to eat sushi or sashimi (I never liked the texture) but after my husband urged me to try it there, I am now a convert. The fish was super fresh and melted in the mouth and the flavour was delicate and subtle. We shared the sashimi platter, the sushi platter (10 different types of sushi), the Kagoshima Wagyu, vegetable tempura, temaki sushi and ended with a beautiful, rich matcha fondant with matcha ice cream and fresh fruit. The ambience was perfect, with soft piano jazz playing in the background - a truly intimate space. The service was thoughtful and not intrusive at all. Definitely would recommend this restaurant!

We had premium omakase (wagyu dish included) for dinner and every dish is amazing. Sushi is super fresh, probably the best we had in London!
W. S.
Best dishes we had for a while! Totally worth it. The flavor is subtle and perfect. Thanks so much for the perfect evening.

An absolutely incredible meal and all round experience! So happy we found the place, it oozes atmosphere and has a calm quiet confidence in the brilliant food they serve. Sublime flavours within a real caring and sincere setting!!

Takahashi is a sanctum and a haven. The premium omakase menu was exquisite – from the first tiny morsel to the astonishing final flourish. (No spoilers!) Every dish was delicious, complex, interesting, and served with an artful and tasteful friendliness that lacked all pretence. People may say "Why is this place in South Wimbledon?" but for us this was the point: you step away from the chaos and self-regard of Central London and make a minor-key pilgrimage to this island far away concealing a string of delights. We dined for three hours; at the end, we felt we hadn't been left waiting for even an instant, and yet every moment was calm, relaxed, and the food left us satisfied but not in the least feeling as though we'd gone too far. Everything about the Takahashis – chef, and hostess – had poise. Flavours found their perfect balance in our mouths: and the service manifested this balance with its grace and charm. Five stars. Go.

Exceptional omasake meal here - delicious plates and plenty of them, as well as a great list of sake. Will definitely be coming again and recommending it to everyone!

Amazing authentic small and almost hidden Japanese restaurant!
We had dinner there last weekend and were welcomed by the owner-chef's wife who made us feel as we were guests at their own home. They were incredibly helpful with explaining about the ingredients of each dish on the menu so that we'd choose and enjoy all to the fullest. There were only 3 more tables apart from ours so with the cosy atmosphere and the profesional service provided it really felt like we were having a private and very special dinner. Last but not least the combination of their fabulous seafood and vegetable tempura and sake was outstanding. Very impressed. I recommend.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in London. The menu changes with the season and with what's fresh at the market. Very small place, so best to book ahead. If you want something specific, call 48hrs in advance. The semi torched tuna with caviar, marinated tuna with jalapeno and the unagi are not to be missed. All of the fish is extremely fresh and very very well prepared. Highly recommend for a la carte or the omakse (had both on different occasions). They also have a great and extensive sake menu.
E. M.
We have been to Takahashi twice this year (following an initial recommendation from a friend) and have loved it on both occasions. We would highly recommend the Omakase (either with or without Wagyu) which has been thoughtful, interesting, delicious, varied, well balanced and worth the cost. The quality of the food is exceptional; whilst all of the food is excellent, the sushi is particularly noteworthy and the best we have personally eaten outside of Japan. Our personal favourites include the beef tobanyaki with terayaki sauce, the nigiri (in particular the mackerel, seared scallop, tuna and cuttlefish), the temaki and the matcha soufflé. We particularly enjoy the welcoming atmosphere here and find the service attentive and kind, yet unobtrusive. You can easily tell that the chef is very talented and has prepared your meal with more skill, care and attention (often in view of the table) than many of the well known Japanese restaurants in the city. We will return on a regular basis and would recommend you give it a try if you are looking for a family run Japanese restaurant in London with exceptional food and attentive, welcoming service. N.B. Reservation required via website; the restaurant on the street is unlabelled, but in close proximity to Wimbledon + South Wimbledon tube stations.
K. N.
Won't write much - I wouldn't do it justice. Incredible. Prepared and presented with so much love and pride in their work. The outcome is stunning. If you like Sushi and want to treat yourself, there is no way around the Omakase (if you can get a table).
C. M.
Wiith a location in a non-descript scrappy part of South Wimbledon and having no signage on the front, you would assume to never venture here. But that's part of the game to restrict it from those not in the know. Its very arguable the very best Japanese food in London, likely the UK. If you are a foodie who loves exceptional quality Japanese food, you simply must seek this place out. You won't be disappointed.
K. L.
For me, the best sashimi in London. It's very noticeable that the chef has access to some great produce and also treats it really well. Been more than 3 times now and always been consistently good!
G. Y.
Brilliant. Only six covers, a truly unique experience which took my wife and I straight back to Japan for an evening. Highly recommended.
S. Y.
We go to Takahashi to celebrate special occasions, like wedding anniversary, because the food is simply delicious. We absolutely loved the sashimi platter, as well as the blackened miso cod fish and the scallop gyoza.
M. K.
Excellent food and impeccable service. We had the nigiri selection, a maki roll and miso cod, while everything was delicious the nigiri was on another level!
N. G.
Really fantastic Japanese food, probably the best sushi I've had outside Japan. The set menus are decent value considering you're getting Michelin-star quality food. Then just add a couple of exciting looking side dishes for variety.
S. S.
Yess, yess, yess. Japanese food isn’t just sushi, but even with an endless list of dishes at Takahashi, choosing was easy with their knowledgeable waitresses. They got it all right - food, lighting, music, service, to even feeling special for picking out little sake cups. I felt a little awkward for not being a white, middle class, middle aged and not really having boujee restaurant etiquette but when you’re spending £100 between two people on four dishes you pretty damn don’t care. We had fish ceviche, I don’t even like raw fish but this was good. Then miso soup, tempura and pork belly, again all BANGED. Last thing, you have to book in advance so then when you’re actually there everyone who walks gets rejected and you feel too prestige.
1. 1.
Highly priced but the freshest & finest Japanese cuisine in SW London. Tempura superb, pork belly exquisite, even the wine selection was remarkably good. Michelin star says it all. Requires no improvement.
R. P.
Great food, nicely presented. The set menu is really nice - very good option for a special occasion. And they managed to keep everything going through lock down with the takeaway options still being really tasty and well presented. Good japanese drinks menu too.
M. W.
It is a true authentic Japanese restaurant, (as I am Japanese). Especially I recommend fish carpaccio. So beautiful! Definitely I will come back again soon.
L. V.
One of the best meals in Japanese cuisine in the last years, worth every single star and more!!!
C. N.
Highest quality and most authentic Japanese restaurant in sw London by a long shot!
B. V.
I love love love Takahashi. Best Japanese food hands down in wimbledon or I dare say SW London. The food is always exceptional and you can really taste the difference in their sushi and sashimi. It is not cheap and for my hungry kids they can easily break the bank but it is very good. They don't do delivery and you have to order in advance but check out their instagram page for daily or weekly special. It is very high quality!

I cannot tell you how much I love this place - everything is perfect the food , the hospitality , the chic minimalist , but not sterile decor . Yes, it is rather pricey, but food of this standard could never be anything else . If you enjoy and think Itsu, Wasbi and any of those chains are good/value for money then this is not the place for you . This is where you come to have an incredible culinary experience , I think for me the sushi is amongst the best I’ve ever had - in Japan or elsewhere , perhaps only The Araki circa 2018 was better . This is a splurge worth saving and making the journey to Wimbledon for . Way better than Roka , Zuma and those other clubby ,Nobu like places .
m. q.
It's a lovely, small place with really kind, professional staff and... nice but overpriced food. Just not blown away. I expected something better, simply. Interesting experience overall, because place itself is different than your typical sushi restaurant. But I don't think I'd come back. I have zero problem with paying £££ for really exceptional food. This was just good.
유.
Have I had the best sushi experience in London? Perhaps yes! I've had Sushi Tetsu and Kikuchi (two favourites) but this has equally as tasty sushi but better value. I'll be back to try the omakase menu. If the deluxe sushi set is 49, who knows how good the OMAKASE is!
Edit: Went for the omakase menu - favourites were the hamachi, toro with truffle from France, otoro and the matcha fondant (exquisite). Service was friendly and I loved the explanations of the ingredients, sometimes showing us the ingredient before preparing the dishes, notably the wasabi sourced from Mt. Fuji (we'd never seen anything like that before!). The meal was well rounded off by sweet plum sake, which tasted very similar to something we drink in Korea. I think we're going to continue to work our way through the menu...

Stumbled across this place looking for lunchtime sushi. It is incredible. From the seaweed salad with onion dressing, to the mushroom miso soup, to the sushi selection, it was all mouth wateringly delicious. My set meal included a pot of crab from Cornwall and eel nigiri - saved that til last and it was the best piece of sushi I've ever eaten. It's got a delicate sauce on it which needs no soy or ginger. Cannot recommend this place enough.
V. P.
The best sushi I have ever had in my life. It was uneasy to find a good place, and we tend to go to Sticks&Sushi just to be sure of a quality and consistency, but this place is the top spot. Must try. Small, cosy, requires a reservation, but authentic and delicious.
A. v. P.
Had dinner here last night and really enjoyed the food here. The service was friendly and relaxed. I really liked the pace at which the food came out. This is somewhere to take your time and enjoy. The sushi here is outstanding, definitely recommend.
M. M.
Great food and service. Was quiet on the Wednesday night that we went which was perfect. Can't believe such amazing food is hiding in South wimbledon!
J. D.
Authentic Japanese portions
Calm environment.
Nice People
Problems:
Some sauces are made in house but "don't hit the spot" some of the different sauces should have stayed on the drawing board at home.
Inattentive service; but still very courteous.
Ran out of the most basic fish expected of a sushi restaurant...Salmon & Hamachi; So wasn't satisfied.
Optional 12.5% Service Charge : Not optional
J. G.
I really wanted to give 5 stars...
Delicious and beautifully presented food. The sashimi was a work of art and delicious, the green tea was the best I've had for a long time, and the matcha ice cream (and caramel-style sauce) was lovely. We didn't feel hurried, and ginger and water was subtly refilled without asking.
Disappointingly, it was otherwise hard to get the attention of the hosts, and I definitely felt I was imposing when asking for more green tea - it was served in a relatively small cup which sat empty for about 10 minutes before I ordered another, which then arrived in a new cup, freshly brewed, only for the process to repeat. A late and unexpected addition to our table was kindly seated, but not served as he had only arrived in time for the end of dessert, and did not want a main meal - the policy of the restaurant maybe, but encouraging us to finish and leave nonetheless.
D. L.
Best Japanese restaurant in London! The food is amazing, the service impeccable and the price is reasonable for what it is! Our favourite dishes include the miso soup, scallop filo and sashimi set. The desserts are also very innovative and delicious!
H. N.
Superb fine Japanese food with incredible attention to details by the chef and the service was very intimate and friendly! I enjoyed every mouthful when I dined with my girlfriends last night. It was my first time and hopefully many more to come! Thank you!!
T. F.
Fantastic take away sushi from a really friendly team - up there with the best we’ve had in London. Not to be missed for SW Londoners. Black cod is Nobu good and sushi super fresh
M. P.
This unassuming little room in South Wimbledon is a wonder. The food is excellent, with layers of complexity missing in other Japanese restaurants in the UK I have been to (and I have eaten whale - unknowingly). The service attentive and considerate. Definitely go even if it is a treck. Well worth it.
N. B.
Incredibly good Japanese food- wonderfully balanced flavours. Very highly recommend. We had the tomato and avo ceviche, hamachi carpaccio, mushroom miso, veg tempura, a couple of temaki and the miso pork belly- all were fantastic and I would recommend each and every dish! Small intimate place with just a few tables.
P. A.
What a gem of a Japanese restaurant! Ex Nobu chef Takahashi has set up an understated restaurant in South Wimbledon serving an array of intriguing hot and cold small dishes and a great selection of sushi/sashimi. As a sushi foodie this restaurant is certainly as good as if not better than most central London Japanese restaurants and its calm atmosphere is very warm and relaxing. Nigiri, temaki and maki were fresh and extremely tasty, as were the tempura, and grilled scallops. Will not hesitate to go back to try more of the sushi, black cod, pork belly and other dishes on the menu. A must go for any south Londoner if you like your Japanese food. Yes it probably is at central London prices, and is not a cheap eat, but it’s easily up there in quality with the best in London and totally worth the money
C. A.
This place should really have more people in it! Family owned restaurant that opens late and has really great food. Both my partner and I had the set menu which was great.
Do yourself and the rest of London a favour and stop going to chains and go more independent places.
S. P.
The best maki I've ever eaten! Everything was presented so beautifully, but the food is by no means superficial and tastes even better than it looks. The quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef are exception. I'm so glad I live around the corner and look forward to many more meals out here!
P. G.
Amazing food. Genuinely as good as some of the top sushi restaurants in London. I’ve been to Tokyo three times and felt like I was there. The fatty tuna was to die for, it melted in the mouth. Service was great. And it’s BYO. We’re going back!
K. M.
Lovely intimate place with good service and pretty but most importantly delicious food. We went for lunch as a party of 4 and tried the sushi, beef and pork belly sets. The sets come with a salad, miso and sesame dessert. Can't wait to come back! Loved this place
S. N.
Great sushi with quality ingredients and great presentation, Michelin star quality. Best time to go is on Sundays when it's less busy. A real find in a hidden part of Wimbledon.
J. P.
This is a very small Japanese restaurant accomodating just twelve people at a time, located in South Wimbledon just 5 minutes walk away from the tube station. The service is excellent, almost like a fine Michelin restaurant, small plates at a time with Miso, I had the Sashimi deluxe plate at a whopping £38.50, but it was good, I wished the portions were a bit bigger.
E. F.
We had a truly remarkable lunch. The O-toro nigiri was so fresh that was litterally melting. The quality and freshness of the raw fish is comparable to a Michelin star Japanese in Japan. Service as always impeccable.
A true hidden little gem.
C. M.
Three of us had the most wonderful dinner on 16th August. Takahashi is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of South Wimbledon. This husband and wife team are a tour de force - beautiful, exquisite food and wonderful hosting. Stepping into Takahashi is stepping into a calm haven where you will be treated to gorgeous dishes (we enjoyed scallops, maki, black cod and much more) and fabulous service. We would recommend this to all foodies and anyone who appreciates fabulous food from the heart.
P. B.
Takahashi is a superb place to eat.
It's a very different setup and offers a very different menu to Sushi Tetsu, but is arguably just as good in terms of quality and that really IS saying something.
The black cod miso is better than I recall the same at Nobu. The pork belly with aubergine is stunning and the soft shell crab rolls converted a friend who "hates crab" to that stunning ingredient.
Two of us ate well, had a couple of drinks each, for about £65 a head.
The only real surprise is the location and lack of queues (perhaps linked).
I really hope it gets supported sufficiently to survive. Book now, you wont be disappointed.
J. M.
Lovely pub, lovely staff ,Lovely atmosphere… can’t say anymore than that!
S. P.
Thank you for the most wonderful meal, honestly the best sushi in London. The service was amazing, the food was incredible, the atmosphere was so romantic. Best kept secret in London.
P. M.
Best Japanese I have had in London! Great variety, delicious seafood and service is just lovely. A little gem in South Wimbledon
T. K.
Excellent fusion of flavours
I stumbles upon Takahashi early evening, and my luck was in they had a table. I recommend you book as by 7.30 all the tables were taken.
The snow crab nigiri and the eel & cucumber maki were absolutely spot on. Surprise of the night was dessert; sweet potato crème brulé. Unctous, but not too sweet, with the caramelized topping as thin as a dragonfly's wing. Set off beautifully by a micro basket of fresh summer fruits as a side.
N. N.
It was absolutely nice Sushi and Miso soup but it wasn't resonable price in South Wimbledon and even though it was just a lunch menu, it was expensive as well. And I disappointed there wasn't Udon and Ramen in the menu as well. I 've never seen the restaurant which dosen't have Udon and Ramen in the menu.
D.
Amazing food and wonderful Japansese hospitality. Don't miss the miso topped grilled aubergine and the Tuna Tataki Tomato Ponzu. The green tea coated dark chocolate, and sesame coated chocolate balls were an excellent dessert to finish the meal. Arigatou Takahashi!
R. M.
One of the best Japanese restaurant I ever eaten in, the miso soup and the salmon menu are very nice. The atmosphere is relax and peaceful improving the experience. I would recommend it
I. R.
I really like this place. The food is super tasty, specially the Miso soup, brilliant! The service just perfect. Best place for sushi in South London for sure

Absolutely lovely. Add to your list of places to eat. Having eaten fatty tuna in this place I'm a convert. The wagyu tataki is to die for. We had to have a second plate.
A. A.
We were there. Recommended by Michelin. Ran by a Japanese couple. Small and cosy. Amazing. It was great. Make imperial japan great again.
C. B.
Absolutely fabulous Japanese food. Not the cheapest Japanese in Wimbledon by a long way, but the quality more than justifies it.
E. S.
Best sushi and sashimi I've ever had. Definitely recommend it!!! Four thumbs up :)

By accident found it walking. Top notch and by far best from Wimbledon to balham

Low key restaurant, fantastic staff and excellent food. It dabbles with Japanese fusion but does so subtly rather than with pretence.
H. A.
Ignore the bad reviews, they are probably from jealous people without taste. The food is absolute amazing and beautifully served. Great service as well!

Love this place so much! Such good food and service. Just make sure you book ahead as they are nearly always fully booked!

Excellent sushi. Restaurant has probably increased the value of average house in the neighborhood by 5 digits!

Small restaurant; good range of great Japanese food on the menu. Try the black sesame ice cream!

Very nice Japanese food. The starters are interesting with traditional sushi options.

(Translated) Very authentic Japanese food, I think it is the best in Wimbledon. The service is also good. Very cozy little shop.
A little suggestion, can I change sashimi's glassware, it reminds me of cigar ashtrays:)
(Original)
非常正宗的日料,我认为是Wimbledon最好的。服务也好。很温馨的小店。
一点小建议,能否把sashimi的玻璃器皿换一下,它让我想起了雪茄烟灰缸:)
