Reviews of The Angel
L.
Great boozer on the river. Samuel smiths Sovereign and Taddy’s lagers are 2 of the best beers out there. Inside is old style, wooden-walled and cosy, outside is on the river and the staff are chilled about you standing there with pints. Worth the slight walk from London Bridge.
S. P.
Fantastic real prober old pub.. Great staff and friendly locals.. Beer very good.. Great views.. Will be back..
M. J.
Food isn’t great. I had the Nachos and they used Mature Cheddar instead of Mozzarella, but the surrounding and riverside view makes up for it. I sat outside and admire the brilliant views of the Thames.
E. B.
A wonderful place. The drink selection is fantastic, bar staff are welcoming and the pub itself is beautifully done up and immaculate. The small outdoor smoking area that overlooks the Thames is definitely worth a look!
M. H.
We love visiting old London pubs, having recently done a few on the North side of the river in Wapping, it was the turn of the south side, although we only had time to take in The Mayflower and The Angel.
What a charming pub, very different in character to a lot of the Thameside pubs we have visited. I'm not overly keen on Sam Smith's as I find the choice on draught limited. However, the reason for visiting these places is to take in the ambience and admire what physical attributes they have to offer.
We spent our time in one of the main downstairs bar sections with a drink. The wooden partitions which separate parts of the downstairs with their low doorways must have claimed many a victim. These, I suspect, are modesty or privacy panels to obscure the identity of patrons in other parts of the pub.
To the left are steps up to a balcony with stunning views of Southwark, Tower of London, The Shard and other recognisable sights.
The stand out feature for us though was the friendliness of the landlord and landlady who were prepared to chat about the pub (to a couple of day tourists) about some of its history, and connections to JWM Turner and challenges of running it. They clearly love the pub, despite the hard work they have to put in. We have rarely experienced such warmth from proprietors in a London pub.
F. P.
Last slice of old Bermondsey. The downstairs is an old fashion pub (all wood with partitions) but the dining room upstairs is modern and cosy. The food is really nice, really enjoyed my bangers and mash.
O. S.
Great selection of Samuel Smiths beers and cider. No. Music inside or outside, no tables outside apart from their balcony, but plenty of space to sit around the pub on the bank. Few benches and little lawn.
C. K.
Favorite pub, very old and traditional. Tasty food and very special Cider!
P. F.
This pub has an amazing view of London. Friendly staff and a great vibe. Keen to come back on a summers day. Some lovely pints on offer but nothing too pretentious
R.
If you're looking for one of the only remaining independent pubs in London, this is the place.
An absolute gem.
N. G.
Beautiful pub, beautiful location. Friendly staff that were helpful with finding us seating. Warm, cosy fireplace downstairs. Great view from the dining room upstairs.
R. H.
A peacful & friendly atmosphere with helpful staff. with beautiful views outside and upstairs of thames and london.
D. T.
Well Sam Smith, you have excelled! Terrific pub with wonderful staff and customers. The building is right on the Thames, great views and a great atmosphere inside. I loved the room upstairs. Just a brilliant visit, thank you.
N. M.
Beautiful pub, even if you don't get the river view. Good Sam Smith's beers and a dart board which is increasingly rare!
J. H.
The river views are hard to match, especially around sunset
C. A.
The perfect pub: great food and drinks; amazing view on the Thames, Tower Bridge and the Shard; lovely staff
S. T.
Unfortunately a female member of staff working at this pub today was incredibly rude and unwelcoming, actually I would describe her as hostile. A visitor to London I was with wanted to leave immediately. I think it important Samuel Smith management are aware of this. I give 3 stars for the riverside setting and interesting historical pictures on the walls
J. K.
One of the nicest pubs in the area, really nice old school interior, always locals about which is a good sign. Sam Smiths so proper drinks guaranteed. Lots, I mean lots of people go there on nice days and just take their drinks outside, next to the pub by the river, but the inside and also the little balcony area at the back of the pub is the bees knees. Go on a quiet Sunday and just chill. Some of the best views of Tower Bridge. Used to be my favourite pub when we lived in Bermondsey.
N. G.
Jewel in the crown. Traditional pub that my grandparents run in the 1950's. Landlady was very welcoming and happy to show us round. Pub is full of character, old historic photos also has a delightful restaurant overlooking the Thames. A must visit!
R. S.
Not you normal Samual Smith's experience. Pub is slightly run down. Need some work. Kudos to the operators to open though due to these unfortunate time. They strictly enforce COVID guidelines which is appreciated. Nice outdoor sitting area and a full drink menu. I have been to other SS pubs which they have a limited selection.
P. L.
Fantastic views over the River Thames towards Tower Bridge, St Paul's and the monument . A great pub with a real fire and a decent pint
F. A.
The best view of the Tower Bridge, the Shard and the city u can get! Such a lovely pub!
S. F.
Absolutely Beltin pub! Saw it on the boat down to Greenwich and promised myself was gonna check it out. Excellent landlady behind the bar and serving top food made by the landlord. Lovely half hour walk from Tower Bridge. Good cheap beer, great hearty food, excellent views from the back verandah.
B.
The fruit beer is really nice ! The outdoor area is so relaxing with the nice view, breeze and river sounds. Recommended !
V. L.
Beautiful pub, amazing view. Service tends to be slow, if pleasant. Beers are usual Sam Smith's range, though missing some (no low alcohol lager).
This is the only time in a few visits that the kitchen was open - food turned out to be pretty ok, better than I feared. But when we went back to order more, the kitchen had already closed again at 8ish.
Could be one of the best pubs in London, but isn't
M. D.
Good views good beer but food hit and miss. Chicken leek pie was as dry as a witches wotsit came with gravy which was much needed. Go for the views the beer and the atmosphere .
D. B.
Lovely venue on the Thames with out door space, for about eight people, and much more inside. This pub has much character and a big asset to the Sam Smiths collection
C. L.
When history meets a traditional British Pub
F. L.
Beautiful location with amazing view of the London skyline. It’s a Samuel Smith pub with their typical beer selection. Because of Covid-19 measures it is not possibly to sit inside however the garden area outside the pub is just perfect if not the most comfortable. Real shame about the latest price increase though I don’t think a post-Covid increase of £1.50 per pint is justifiable!
Ф. Г.
Very nice place. Good pubish atmosphere.
C. W.
Be prepared for plastic glasses if you want to sit outside as there is a large area there where customers just spread out looking over the river. Drinks and food are also a bit more expensive than we were expecting.
A. B.
Nice pub with a lot of space outdoors. Can’t say any more, as I haven’t been in since they reopened.
C. R.
Fantastic neighbourhood pub restored to its original 19th century plan, decoration and fittings. Situated directly on the Thames with a great view of Tower Bridge - one which the artist Whistler reportedly used for many of his drawings and sketches. Food is good quality pub food and the only drawback is that the drinks selection is exclusively Samuel Smiths other than the liquor but that doesn't bother most folks.
A. R.
Lovely friendly pub with a small outdoor area offering some fantastic views of London. We stopped here for a quick lunch, fish goujon sandwiches (posh fish fingers) were absolutely superb, huge pieces of fish with a decent portion of chips, really good value. The staff here are really friendly and helpful, definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
T. R.
Nice pub inside, Sam smiths beer so not ludicrously expensive. The best but though is the outside decking, so you can enjoy your pint with the lapping waves looking at Tower Bridge. Also a good pub if its busy as there's space along the wall that many stand or sit outside with their drinks here
T. H.
If you know Samuel Smiths pubs you’ll know them to be inexpensive, pretty no nonsense and pretty good looking too. This one is all of those things and more, situated right on the river overlooking The Shard, St Paul’s, the BT Tower and Wapping it’s actually pretty gorgeous. And the view is better than many other riverside boozers. Enjoy.
C. M.
A very good location with great views over the Thames.
The Pub was clean and tidy and the staff were friendly and welcoming.
There was a good selection of beers.
The menu was well presented with a good selection to suite most tastes, h owever, when the food arrived it was not spectacular.
O. i. d.
Lovely customer service, good food and beautiful pub. Vegan burger was tasty but needs some sauce as it was a little dry.
L. G.
It's a good spot where to buy drinks. The pub has a certain charm to it. The food service could be quicker. We waited an hour for 2 meals on a very quiet evening.
Hopefully that was a one off.
L. j. p.
We've been going to this lovely pub for years, it's a, must if you live around Bermondsey or you walk by the river. Close to Southwark park it's a perfect place to quench your thirst. Angel has a great variety of amazing beers.
T. E.
This is a hidden gem, absolutely incredible views of the Thames with the water underneath your feet on the terrace (if you can get a spot!) worth a visit if you’re in the area with lovely staff and great selection on tap.
A. B.
Really cosy little areas inside this pub plus some seating on a a little balcony overlooking the river.
B. M.
This is an old nautical style pub with lots of character and a narrow balcony literally over the Thames. It's great for tourists or as a novelty pub, but crikey is it expensive, £ 19.60 for a pint of cider, rum&coke and two bags of peanuts. The proverbial p***take!
T. B.
Classic Sam Smiths pub, with an exceptional view
A. M.
Great small historical local pub...at its best in the summer when you can sit outside with plenty of public space (no organised seating) with an amazing view of central london!
K. “. S.
The best views in London! Beautiful thameside pub with fresh beers, large outdoor space and attentive staff.
A. D.
Sam smiths pub so not the usual pub choices but what they offer more than makes up for it. Great beer selection! Nice sunny drinking area outside
M. M.
I have used this pub quite alot, decent cider and views of the Thames are remarkable.
m.
Friendly staff, good choice of beverage. Normally is quite busy in there, but you dont want to miss the River Thames view from the little balcony👍👀 Charming place
M. K.
Beautiful old pub on bank of river Thames with all kind of beer and wine.
R. O.
Love this Samuel Smiths pub right on the river Thames. Set in historic Bermondsey, the Angel is a great place to whet the whistle on a hot summers day, enjoy a plate of pub fayre and sit and watch the Thames trafgic float by. Stunning views from the balcony.
D. S.
Historically a fabulous pub on the river with plenty of outdoor space when it is warm and sunny.
The pub itself is another great old London pub, worth looking around outside to get a real sense of the history of the area as at first glance it appears unassuming.
I think the pub has even retained its original layout.
Food, drinks and service are all okay, nothing fantastic but also by no means bad.
It also has a fabulous view of Tower Bridge
G. R.
“Secret” gem for outside pints on spring/summer days with outstanding views over London
A. V.
Excellent place. Great views, quiet - and beer is about £4.80. Totally recommended if you want a relaxing drink in what is one of the most busiest cities on earth
D. D.
A great spot for a laid back drink on the Thames. Met the husband and wife duo who run the place and they were hilarious. I like the one way system they have in there. Good for the times we are living in. All the other bartenders were friendly too, which is great. Didn't eat there so not sure what the food is like. It is a Sam Smith pub so beers go down real well. A very ca atmosphere.
S. H.
Amazing pub. They weren't seating indoors for obvious reasons but had really good service for drinking outside. Amazing views of the London skyline with no buildings in the way. Also very reasonably priced as a Sam Smith pub. A little bit of a walk from London bridge though
S. Z.
Nice riverside pub with a great view. Clean facilities.
S. E.
Quick visit yesterday and a warm welcome. Beautiful, well-loved interior and great views. Will have to come back soon for a drink!
S. J.
Is there a better Riverside pub? I mean, a proper pub. History, character, the best Riverside views, Great beer good hosts and eclectic mix of clients. I wish The Angel was my local.
A. L.
Please don't come here all at once but this place is BRILLIANT because it's got great views of the city and it's so quiet and peaceful (upstairs) AND there is a STRICT no kids policy. These sorts of pubs are rare!
N. M.
Awesome location and views of the river. Not a massive drink selection. But environment is really nice, especially on the upper floor
D. R.
Lovely beer. Nice food. Friendly staff, and gorgeous views of London. Would definitely recommend and go again.
A. R.
nice place to sit at bank of river tame good thing about this pub they sell their own products and most of them are organic and very nice good place to relax eat and drink
A. J.
Really nice Sam Smith pub next to the Thames with Tower Bridge view if you have the window seat
Cheapest beer in London seriously.
The place wasn't crazy packed - which is a big advantage. Real fire place to enjoy too.
Historic pub for sure and the food was good from my point of view
J. M. N.
Loved this pub great view's over the Thames great decor
N. L.
Two pints of Sam Smiths best and change from £10. Best views of Tower bridge from the veranda or the restaurant upstairs.
Great home cooked roasts.
R. T.
Lovely riverside pub and a little less full that the other ones in the area.
D. A.
Beautiful pub away from the tourists on the Southbank. Situated on the Thames path. Lovely Sam Smith's beers.
T. S.
Views from The Angel are outrageous! Also an off brand selection of drinks that some people would be into.
E. D.
Always a pleasure to visit the Angel. This quiet, unassuming pub has some of the best views of Central London from its riverside balcony. Being a Sam Smith's pub, the beer is good quality and very reasonably priced. Friendly staff too.
G. L. G.
Great food, good prices and very nice staff. Beautiful place. Worth a visit.
M. S.
Lovely riverside pub. Not touristy, just proper. Fair prices. What's not to like?
B. B.
Revisited this pub after 40 years hasn't changed except drinks prices are expensive.
V. B.
Cozy and warm historical pub on river Thames. Stunning location, unfortunately a bit isolated but buzzing in summer. Food can be improved, not bad but nothing exceptional. Stunning view!! Nice beers and friendly staff. Definitely recommended!!
C. C.
Traditional and fairly large pub with an open fire serving the usual pub food and a wide range of Samuel Smith beers.
I had the fish n chips which was very nice and the portion size just right.
This pub (like all Smith pubs) is a device free zone so they don't want you to use phones, laptops etc. Not a problem for me but others may struggle to put their devices away. It's also dog friendly if you have a furry friend.
J. B.
Like going back in time. Beers are cheap as it's a Sam Smiths pub but they're not the best
O. O.
Samuel Smith's pub. As usual variety of beers, organic beers, fruit beers etc. Also nice Thames view as well.
S. G.
Picturesque pub on the river with a stunning view and traditional interior.
C. J.
Great pub with traditional English food and views along the river.
L. M.
My favorite pub while on holiday. I love the cozy rooms. Do stop by!
J.
This is a lovely independent pub, which brews it's own beer and liquor
The view outside is not bad either, go visit 😀
I. B.
Excellent friendly pub with a lovely interior. Only negative is that it's hard to get a river view seat, they seem to get taken very early in the day. Saloon bars warm and comfy though
S. J.
I simply love this pub from its lovely interior to its convivial staff to its good range of reasonably priced Sam Smith's beers. Over lockdown, a friend and I have been on a number of rides which end at Tower Bridge which offers the perfect opportunity to visit here for a celebratory drink or two...
A. B.
A really great pub for a few pints. Lots of character. And maybe the best riverside views of London, sunset is stunning.
M.
Really good Sam Smiths pub. Right on the Thames. Layout is a real step back in time. Nice mixture of locals and incomers. They have a smoking area which is actually over the Thames. This pub will always have a soft spot in my heart, I scattered my mother's ashes from here into her beloved Thames.
F. L.
Beautifully located pub in Bermondsey. It's got some incredible views of the Square Mile and Tower Bridge, and even better sunset views. It's a Sam Smith's pub, so the beer is pretty good and reasonably priced. One of the best riverside pubs in London, hands down.
D. S.
This pub starts with lovely views. It has friendly staff. Being a Sam's smiths, the beer selection is pretty much the same as any other. the bathrooms are well kept. Good spot for drinking inside or out on the riverside.
D. S.
What can one say..... What a lovely family run pub, nice friendly staff with a great warm welcome. Clean and tidy pub and the food is lovely. I will be using this pub more and more and if this way for client meeting I will be using this place as my own meeting room as the view upstairs is amazing looking towards Tower Bridge. Well done guys a lovely pub, keep up the great work and amazing customer services as it goes a very long way nowadays. Thank you
C. '. H.
Love the fact that you can sit quietly and watch the river traffic flow by.
Not so happy about paying £5.40 for a pint of orange and lemonade.
L. C.
Gorgeous place, old school, slightly nautical feel. Upstairs has huge windows and great view over tower bridge and river. No music or TV; comfortable, recently redecorated, clean, and quiet on late Sunday afternoon. Think this is my new favourite pub in the area.
But drink is usual Sam Smith range, and food looked like normal pub grub.
J. W.
Lovely pub, lovey staff but S. Smith prices have risen way too much...not landlord/managers fault.
M. G.
Great london boozer favourite view in london off the balcony!
T. Z. (. G.
Organic lager 🍺 and the best view from South London
E.
Great location and view but the Sunday roast (in the picture) was disappointing
M. S.
Good beer at a great price in a great location!
Local Sam Smith's pub right on the river. I recommend the beer highly and it is good value (esp. for London). Food can be hit or miss but isn't too expensive.
I really enjoy being here as a Local and would recommend you visit if ever in the area.
R. C.
Beautiful location, fantastic decor, great beers, reasonable food - let down by poor attitude of certain members of staff.
We visited this pub recently, and asked the barman what time the kitchen closed; we were told 4pm. After ordering starters around 3pm, we went and ordered the mains at 3:30pm, only to be told the kitchen had closed early - no apology was offered. Fortunately, we found another member of staff who then told the barman to place an order for us; he did offer a rather surly apology.
Later, we asked for a coffee and were told the machine was broken. So we then asked for a Diet Coke and were told that they did not serve it. At this point, we gave up and went to the Ship pub nearby, which did serve coffee, and where the staff had a much better attitude.
This is a real shame, as the Angel is a really nice pub, with a superb upstairs room with terrific views of the Thames. And though the food was nothing special, it was fine, and quite cheap.
So to conclude, they really do need to up their game and treat their customers better, as they may otherwise lose business as a result.
M. M.
This is a great pub. Having been here for the first time in 2015, now I've come back as part of my memory lane trip and it's still going strong, good ambiance. Stunning views of Tower Bridge from its outside terrace. It is likely to remain my favourite pub in London :)
D. V.
Nicely refurbished and very friendly place in the heart of Rotherhithe. Sam Smith drinks are served at very reasonable prices for London, so it's a must already. The pub has a cute little terrace looking at the river - although you have to cross one another if you need to go for another drink, this actually builds a friendly atmosphere with the other people. I tried their chicken burger which I enjoyed and would go for again! The Angel is definitely a place I'll visit again.
M. S.
This pub is a must visit if you're in the area. Absolutely ripping views over the Thames. Well priced beer (make sure to order the Taddy Larger) and a generally good vibe. Sit upstairs on a cold evening for the best views.
J. S.
Nice pub with a great view overlooking the Thames. There's a reasonable amount of seating and great views especially from upstairs. There's the usual Sam Smith's selection of reasonably priced drinks.
J. R.
Lovely Sam Smith's pub next to the river. Good food and good drinks, friendly staff. Pub quiz on a Tuesday night.
Good for sunny weather to sit outside, and a short walk to three stations.
No wifi unfortunately, but very little else to complain about..!
N. P.
The angel is open again december under the covid rules for drinks amd a full menu of food. Our take away bar is also be open for thone who like to sit by the river . Please call to book ..looking forward to seeing you all soon
K.
An amazing view can be had back towards tower bridge standing along the wall with a pint. The inside of the pub is less inspiring, it’s old and interesting but a bit shabby and unloved, and the bar staff are generally quite miserable, rude and unfriendly.
F. T.
A traditional London boozer. Despite some reviews the prices are not expensive for London and certainly cheaper than nearly all the pubs in central London. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was fine. Views of the Thames and Tower Bridge are great. Small terrace at the back. I will be returning here..
D. F.
Great little old fashioned boozer. This is a basic pub, not a restaurant so it shouldn't be reviewed as such. On that front don't expect anything more than pie and chips type of food, but if you like proper traditional pubs this is well worth a visit. Sensitively renovated, run by a no nonsense Irishman and serving quality beers, it's a thumbs up from me.
M. R.
Nice pub with great view of Thames
A. P.
You have to try this pub, cycled from croydon.fab, detox pub ie no phones, music etc. Fab beer.on river Thames see tower bridge
A. E.
Located on the south bank of the Thames in Bermondsey this is a nice little Sam Smith's pub. Great beer but never tried the food here.
Still a great place to stop for a pint.
Good view of London from the balcony outside.
P. G.
Welcomed by a friendly barmaid with a lovely smile. That put us at our ease before we even ordered. Only stayed for a drink this time, but have eaten here before. Food has always been hot and delicious, with very generous helpings. Lovely views of the River Thames.
M. C.
Wonderfully located and historic pub. Very warm attentive staff esp Nicki the landlady, who runs a tight ship👍
W. C.
Brilliant Samuel Smith's pub with an incredible view of London from the river.
J. S.
Smashing old boozer a little off the beaten track but within comfortable walking distance from Bermondsey tube. Charismatic barman initially seemed unfriendly but quickly showed warm humour once engaged in brief conversation whilst serving. Beautiful river views from little balcony right over the water, and from clean, quiet areas away from busier bar area. Usual Sam Smith's selection of drinks at acceptable prices (especially given the great location). Recommended.
M. L.
This is an absolutely brilliant London Pub. Great Ale, good food & friendly. There's a breathtaking view of London's skyline at night from the upstairs dining room. Will definitely be going back for more...
W. K.
One of my favourite places. The owner is an amazing guy and his sense of humour is definitely not understandable for average person. He knows his business well. Always remember before you order "it's a long way to Tipperary, it's a long was to go". On top of that there is a staggering view along the river. Wether you are fancy for a pint or glass of Irish whisky this is the place you have to visit.
M. M. (.
Sitting right on the Thames this pub baby help but have fantastic River views. The prices are about right for London.
There is a small seating area outside the back of the pub but patrons also make use of the large eagle section outside the pub by the river.
The staff on my visit where not that helpful or polite. Snapping at people to form a queue rather than wait to be served at the bar like any other pub ever.
R. W.
Stunning views across London from a rather special historic pub.
B. M.
Great Prices, clean and quite peaceful. Amazing view and delicious beers
C. V.
Great Thameside Samuel Smith’s pub. The location right on the river is very evocative and there’s a wooden balcony area at the back that puts you right next to it. Prices are cheap as it’s a Samuel Smith’s. Recommend the wheat beer and taddy lager on tap. Have never had any issue with the staff; some of the seasoned alcoholics at the bar can be a little impertinent though, yet only in a harmless and impotent way.
C. L.
I'm just not the world's biggest Samuel Smith beer man. Otherwise I'm sure I'd have scored higher. Plenty of character to the place, with a visit.
H. B.
Great choice of Sam Smith beer and cider. This pub is right on the river with outside seating. Awesome place to go to watch the boats go by, good view of London and not too far of a walk from bermondsey tube station
J. M.
Great Pub, nice owners, the kitchen is closed Sunday evening.
C. R.
Nice location, very cosy atmosphere, perfect on a sunny day. Haven't tried any food there yet, might change the review..
UPDATE: tried some food - nice pie and burger. Also we were lucky to watch some fireworks - overall a stunning night view of the Tower bridge and the festive salutes! One drawback of the place - not very pregnant-friendly, I'm not impressed with not being able to drink any n/a beers or ciders. They do sell a selection of craft n/a drinks, but most of them seem sugary and unhealthy either, so I'd rather prefer a fake beer... That is a point to work on, otherwise a nice pub (great alternative to the always overcrowded Mayflower, even if 5 more min walk)
M. C.
What a lovely pub with warm and friendly staff. The pub is full of character and spotless, the bathrooms are a delight and are the best kept l have ever seen. The views are outstanding, there is nothing negative about this pub, l wish l lived nearer but coming across it in the first place was a great find!
N. R.
Brilliant pub, very nice staff. One of the best pubs I’ve ever been in.Fish and chips were excellent.
R. G.
A good place to drop in for a pint, especially when I'm coming to an end of walking my dog. I can never tell when their kitchen is open however. It seems to be whenever they feel like it. But the pints are reliable
Edit: Thank you for the time update Ashley! Very much appreciated
J. W.
Fantastic pub, lovely atmosphere and lots of space across different rooms (so it always feels a bit cozy). And sofas. And a view of the thames and London skyline. And great prices, couldn't recommend it enough. Food is good value and fairly cheap for a London pub (but therefore not super fancy).
W. D.
The Angel is a gorgeous little pub by the river in Bermondsey. The landlady is the most delightful person you could meet, and whilst some of the staff are a little brusque, she more than makes up for it in friendliness and warmth.
The food is hearty pub fare, with burgers, fish & chips, or pie and mash as good pub grub! I recommend the Chicken Pie and a pint of Organic Lager.
C. r.
Good pub, excellent upstairs. Open fires and many rooms, interesting wall pics, great history area. Beer great as usual.
D. W.
A bit quirky when you first walk in but the bar staff and current landlords are very friendly. If you're in this pub at night, pop upstairs for a stunning view of Tower Bridge lit up.
W. W.
London's best-kept secret! Cheap beers and amazing location next to the river. Gets the sun all day.
H.
Nice pub but a bit soulless. Good selection of beers but didn't a warm and friendly feel there.
E.
Amazing place, good beer & food. Sublime views
J. R. W.
Traditional pub by the river with a traditional clientele. The first floor is newly refurbished and really nice. Great views over the river! They even have some outdoor seating almost on the water. Good food!

One of London's lesser known Sam Smith's pubs - it always seems to have been nearly empty whenever I've been. This is probably because it's a bit out of the way, but it's really worth seeking out because both the interior, and the river views, are a real treat. Inside it's the Victorian style familiar from many other Sam Smith's pubs, with partitioned saloon, private and public bars at the front, and a couple of extra rooms at the back with larger tables and benches, looking out over the river. There's also an upstairs room which, whilst perhaps being a little plainer in terms of the decor, does offer a better vantage point to enjoy the impressive views along the river to Tower Bridge. It is particularly lovely in the evening, with the bridge all lit up. They have an open fire downstairs too.
Standard Sam Smith's selection of drinks, and the food is basic but functional - if you're looking for somewhere to eat you might be better off along the river at the Mayflower, but in terms of river views I think this is the best of all the East London riverside pubs.
S. F.
A bit over stretched the day I went due to the London Marathon. Didn't find the staff particularly friendly or helpful & they were out of almost all beers! But it is no doubt a lovely spot to visit right on the river.
G. L.
Trendy pub on the water front. Beautifully decorated and lovely view upstairs
L. O.
In a nice location on the river, this Sam Smith's house offers a wide range of beers and gins. A nice little balcony area outside overlooks the Thames for a relaxing time
A. (.
Great views of the river and tower bridge...nice cup of coffee and very friendly services
C. B.
The Angel was a charming little pub next to the river. The views along the river up into the City are stunning, seeing the Gherkin, Walkietalkie, building and the Shard. However, the pub doesn't take bank cards and the drink menu wasn't much (only 1 x cider). If you are looking for a charming cute, old fashioned local pub, this is a great place with stunning views.
J. b.
One of the nicest pub in London..
Nickye and her husband they're very accommodating.
Beautiful location.
Amazing staff.
Can't wait the end of lockdown.
N. W.
The riverside terrace is tiny so it's unlikely you'll find a seat but there's plenty of other outside space and the best tip is the upstairs bar which has an array of comfy sofas and really impressive riverside views. The drinks selection is classic Sam Smiths fare.
L. G.
Has been sedately upgraded to reflect the subtle change in clientele over recent years but still acccesible to 'born and bred' locals. Situated right on the Thames with views up to Tower Bridge it's ideally located for a walk by the river right up to London Bridge one way and Surrey Docks the other. A very respectable boozer.
T. L.
Great pub with great pints.
C. P. T.
Amazing sightseing just outside the bar.
C. L.
Good beers and amazing view!
T. D.
Great view form outside
G. K.
Only Sam Smiths booze. Snarky ladylady.
J. b.
One of the nicest pub in London..
Nickye and her husband they're very accommodating.
Beautiful location. …
a.
Amazing view, great beer, a must-see experience in London
K. H.
Awesome pub, Sam Smith so affordable for London standards. Cool location with windows and balcony overlooking Tower Bridge. Food unfortunately nowhere near as good as in other Sam Smith pubs around London (still decent).
K. H.
The location of the pub is nice and has plenty of outdoor space right on the Thames. Its especially nice during a sunny summer day. But they dont seem to have a very friendly staff unless you're a regular.
M. H.
Its one of my local boozers. I love it. Another Samuel Smiths boozer and a great place for a cheap, quiet drink. the back offers a great view of the River and of the Tower Bridge, so on summer nights you can have a drink, and enjoy the summer heat. I rather love the history, as I am drinking in the place that Samuel Peyps drank in. Go there if you can.
N. D.
I love this pub! It is near the river Thames, it haa briliant views on the City, Shard amd Tower bridge. You can take drink outside and enjoy views. Food is good as well. This is Samuel Smith chain so the prices are very reasonable!
S. B.
Fascinating old style pub, with a lovely friendly family running the pub with great beer and I really enjoyed my meal which was excellent value for money. Amazing location with superb views up and down the river Thames.
S. M.
What a great pub loved the views and fish and chips and the beer is well kept.
P. T.
Top Sam Smith's pub. Classic quartered off seating sections and a nice open square bar. Outside offers views down the Thames and of course Tower Bridge.. perfect for sunsets!
T. E.
Stunning riverside pub with superlative views towards Tower Bridge. This is no tourist trap but a proper boozer serving Sam Smiths beers. Great option if the Mayflower up the road is too busy. The riverside verandah is knockout but the whole pub has a good vibe. Apparently Turner painted The Fighting Temeraire from this vantage point.
J. C.
This is the best pub in London by a country mile. The oak panelled first floor lounge with panoramic views of the Thames is the finest enclosed drinking area on Earth. Anybody who dares disagree is either a liar or an idiot. Quite possibly both
e. b.
Lovey afternoon, allowing drinks outside overlooking the Thames. £6.20 for only larger a bit steep. But would go there again and paid this during these strange times.
n. p.
Stay for the views leave before eating. They’re food is simply bad. I’ve given them a few tries but honestly dry meat and tiny portions. It’s unfortunate that I love this place so much.
S. T.
Such an amazing view of tower bridge and further up the river. Highly rate it for outdoor drinking. Very nicely updated interior that maintains historical features. Worth a pint in my book.
w.
Got there on a Sunday, not busy, half of the tables were available. Got some drinks and food, nice choice, however they were missing several ingredients so we had to amend our order few times and had to cancel our desserts as the 3 options all include ice cream and they run out of it... nice view on the river and the north side and city, though. Would get back on summer for that.
D. H.
Went here having seen all the good reviews. The views are nice and the beers tasty, but the food was a bit of a joke. The small menu by the door was not all available - only a choice of burgers, fish & chips, thai curry or chilli. The burgers were underwhelming, though given the fairly low price it was to be expected. Chips very good though and service was reasonably quick.
m. R.
Really old traditional pub sitting right on the Thames. Lovely food, view and atmostphere. Only 2 downsides would be no highchairs available and no prosecco!
K. C.
Lovely watering hole on Thames Walk with great views.
Busy on sunny days as it should be.
A. A. (.
Great view over the river Thames and The City in the background. Let's not forget the Tower Bridge.
C. G.
Great location with outside space on terrace and in area next to pub. Upstairs restaurant has great views over the river and has been decorated with character.Limited range of drinks and food.
S. A.
Astounding Tower bridge views. Samuel Smith beers (Chocolate Imperial Stout highly recommended). The kitchen is very often close and the service is not the most charming one but is ok.
E. M.
Great views from the terrace. One of my favourite secret places in London
R. C.
A great location with breathtaking views over the river Thames. The fact it's in Bermondsey may put some people off but it will be a worthwhile trip. A good menu with vegan options are a bonus.
O. Y.
Lovely place to have food or drinks by the river.
M. S.
Cosy, great river views, friendly staff, been fav pub for years!
J. G.
This has to be one of my favourite surprise pubs in London. On the riverside, it has a nice well kept, wooden interior, and when the sun is shining, the area is simply GORGEOUS. Loads of greenspace and riverside make it a perfect summer chillout with a huge group. And, if you like history, there are some nice ruins nearby, too.
Y. N. T. V.
Nice quiet pub by the riverside near the city centre. Great for small friend reunions! Apart from the excellent location and views, it is pretty much like any other pub. However, it does feel very cozy :)
M. D.
I love a Samuel Smith pub. Great beer, great prices. Staff here were very friendly and the location is really nice. They'll let you sit beside the river next to the pub.
b. s.
Splendid location, right on the river, get a table upstairs and enjoy the views. Friendly staff and value for money pub food. An easy walk from Tower Bridge or Rotherhithe.
L. T.
One of my favourite view point from the river side. The food and the beer are good.
M. M.
Nice local pub on the river. Staff could do with an injection of 'life's. Perhaps a smile. Cider is pretty cool though. Stunning views and plenty of outdoor space!
s. k.
Beautiful views of london skyline from here. Nice little place to relax. Theres a mix of locals and tourists that go here. Averagely priced beer too. Kitchen isnt open everyday so best to check.
C. G.
Great local pub with views of the river and decent food. Bring your international visitors here.
R. R.
Traditional pub overlooking the river. Good food, reasonable prices
Y. V.
Nice pub just next to the Thames. Perfect place to have a beer on a sunny day. You can just grab a beer in the pub and go drink it outside, enjoying the sun & the view.
L. A.
Really nice location and a beautiful old building but it fell down slightly on food and service in comparison to other Sam Smith's pubs.
A. C.
Great atmosphere and location, delicious Sam Smith fruit beers and more. Highly recommended
j. s.
If you want great views with a nice pint then this is the pub. Ive not met a tourist who hasnt liked it yet. The people you meet are friendly locals and people from all over the world. This is my fav to have a drink or two with friends.
T. S.
Lovely pub, beautifully furnished. Food was good, although service was lacking a bit on the upper floor with no one paying attention to our table, so we had to go and get the drinks ourselves.
S. E. J.
It was quite busy but service was quick and friendly. Downstairs and the outside veranda were full but there was some space upstairs for our group.
There is also a large space outside with a view of the Thames with statues of Dr Salter's Dream, by Diane Gorvin.
P. C.
One of the best pubs on the bank of Thames in Bermondsey area. Perfect place to have casual catch up with friends and the upper floor is also suitable for dates.
M. K.
A rather unusual place. The beer selection seems to be very niche, and the choice non-alcoholic drinks is rather limited. We were unable to get a coke or a lemonade, and in the end had to plump for tap water.
E. T.
Lovely pub and view but the food is so-so, pricey for what it is and service is alright but understaffed and rather non-existent. The crowd when we were there were incredibly raucous, made our ears ring and drove us out sooner than we would like.
C. F.
Nice historical pub with own brand beers that are very nice. Also try the own brand cider.Rustic food here is quite good.
Although this is a nice pub it is not a family friendly one unfortunately, hence the 3 stars.
R. J.
Great for drinks, but meh food
f. r.
I had a nice quinoa and edemame vegan burger and a tasty Thai curry with rice. Nice chips. Not expensive and friendly helpful kind staff. Lovely view down the thames. A tiny seating bit outside over the river.
Pub quiz too 😂
D. S.
In my opinion the nicest pub in London, classic atmosphere, the staff is kind, the food is good and the beer is better, plus the pub has a cool background. 10/10 recommend
M.
Great pub with a beautiful view of the Thames with a great ambience. Good value for money. A good night-out with friends!
P. T.
Great views over London and really nice pub.
M. P.
Incredible view of the river in a cosy room upstairs. Been there with my family last Sunday for lunch. Food is good but was a bit disappointed not to find Sunday Roast.
M. A.
I stopped in here for lunch one day, and it was great. The staff was very friendly and they had a very good selection of beers. The views cannot be beat either. Definitely worth a stop.
J. P.
Great pub been coming here for years and never tire of the great views along the Thames. Taking Covid seriously with spaced seating.
N. R.
Great spot on the river, limited seating outside but good gallery seating upstairs. Local feel to the pub, limited beer options. Good staff.
B. F.
Great stout. Fooled me, thought it was Guinness! Had couple pints here, in the sun, On the grass. Very festival like. Like a wee escape from London life. Brilliant. Will definitely be back for more cheeky pints.
G. F.
I used to live not far away from the Angel, during my business years I took several foreign friends in this pub, I always enjoyed a drink and the food up stair in the restaurant, but that was some years ago, I must try again, but certainly it is worth going there for the view of the Thames and London.
C. H.
Lovely local pub with an amazing view of the Thames
L. U.
Great Sam Smiths pub with wonderful views.
a.
A historical Sam Smiths Pub by the Thames. I went on a pub crawl from Rotherhithe station. The local and staff were very friendly telling me old tales of About the pub. The views of London are stunning from the pub.
A. B.
Really great beers, food, views and service.
G. A.
One of the many pubs on the river front. Nice views and helpful staff. Serve food which is always a bonus...
D. A.
Nice and cozy english pub, was a pleasure to sit there. Unfortunately on weekdays kitchen closes at 3pm. P.S. take a look at the bronze sculptures outside, they are so cute!
J. D.
Amazing location and views of a historic part of London. Pleasant staff, the pub is always clean and tidy and although busy never seems rammed..
K. P.
Nondescript inside BUT you can drink outside. The view is stupendous. Archaeological site and historical art work to hand... which is nice!
W.
Great view of London skyline especially from the 1st floor
J. B.
This pub is really special. The best is the views of London skyline across the river. Very nice space.
M. L.
This place is lovely... Set on the river, beautiful views.
I go to my book club here, have a great time discussing books and having a few drinks not forgetting the lovely snacks Ashley 😋
J. L.
An absolutely lovely pub by the Thames overlooking the Shard and tower bridge. They have a good selection of beer and I would suggest going upstairs as there's less ppl.
A. B.
Great hidden gem by the river. Very reasonable prices and often lots of space. I often go with friends in the evening at the weekend and we sit upstairs where there are great views of the river and the City.
E. N.
Among my favourite pubs. If you live locally then this is the pub for you. Always nice and quiet and a view (from upstairs) that you just cannot beat! Reasonable prices as well as its a Sam Smiths.
E. F.
Great location amazing views. Sat out on the balcony
H. K.
Tend to have to wait a bit at the bar but selection of ales is good. View across the Thames outside is unbeatable for such a quaint establishment. Highly recommended.
S. P.
Good food at an excellent price and very friendly service. Recommended.
A. V.
we celebrated a birthday party at the Angel a few weeks ago and it was a great moment. lovely view, nice service and delicious food.
A. M.
Extremely nice Riverside seating, you'll be surprised how magical it can be!
D. S.
Good outside area, great views and a nice enclosed balcony overlooking the river on the second floor. But the inside is a bit of a flashback to the 1970s with a few too many alcoholics propping up the bar
B. L.
Old atmospheric pub, next to the Thames it has much history. It was the favourite watering hole of Judge Jeffries, frequented by Samuel Pepys and drawn by Whistler.
C.
A fantastic pub on the Thames.
a.
Amazing view, great beer, a must-see experience in London
A. G.
Love Sam Smith lager, and so cheap compared to other local pubs. Nice view over tower bridge, and balcony on the Thames
G. B.
Situated on the side of the Thames, real old world London / maritime feel to the pub. Had a very interesting conversation with a Mr Bill Sikes with his dog bullseye
K. H.
Lovely little pub but never seem to be enough staff always a big cue which is annoying. But lovely place and good views of Tower Bridge.
M. P.
Without doubt, the nicest landlord and landlady in the land, with an amazing pub and breathtaking views......5 stars!
L. B.
Great pub, as it is a Samuel Smtih the beers are relatively cheap, outside it offers one of the best view for a pub in London, including tower Bridge and the City.
n. m.
Cheap beer for london and a great location. Staff friendly. Great views. Right on Thames footpath so very convenient.
I. B.
Beer is excellent - although from the same brewery, uniquely wide collection including my favourite (whitbeer). The food, however, was simply disastrous. Oh boy.
D.
Lovely old pub with so much history. Very covid safe.
