Reviews of The Approach Tavern

Initially, we only planned to see the exhibition upstairs...Artist: Sandra Mujinga.
We didn't realise we'd be able to get a table. So we ended up having a few beers and some yummy snacks. Staff were so friendly and welcoming...all very mindful about social distancing etc. We felt very comfortable. Great outside space. Please venture upstairs when you visit... brilliant artworks!
Thanks guys we had a great afternoon. Will visit again.

Unfortunately we just didn’t enjoy it today. Food took way too long (just under 2hrs) and it wasn’t as good as everyone said it would be. Unfortunately the pork was just way too sweet. Service was ok. On the plus side the drinks were really good!

It's so good to finally be back to the Approach Tavern after such a long time. The quality of the food is sublime, Chef Luca never disappoints you! The new entry Hot chocolate and avocado brownie sandwich with mango sorbet (picture attached) is a real treat, you must try it :)
A. B.
Went on a Friday evening. Nice atmosphere (probably helped by the lots of dogs) with friendly service and good food. A decent vegetarian/vegan selection of dishes and drinks too :)
P. C.
The staff are wonderful, service is excellent, food delicious. Cutlery is rubbish. My partner and I both had red meat which naturally has fat running through it. The knives were so bad my partner gave up trying to cut through his food. I persevered through my yummy beef.
M. Y.
Nice place for a pint or two and good atmosphere. The staff seemed reluctant to turn down the volume of tv which no-one was watching. A few too many smokers spoilt it.

Visited here as part of a tour of local pubs! It’s a traditional place with very decent beer. If I’m ever in Bethnal Green again, I’d stop here again. Food also looks good!
L. K.
Nice ambient, friendly service. Both indoor n outdoor table r available. Good beer choice. Roasted pork is fabulous.
S. S.
Great pub en route to Victoria Park. Does an excellent Sunday roast menu. Although a little expensive, you get a big portion of great quality food. The pub isn't huge inside so does get busy on a Sunday but has a good sized outside area with plenty of seating under shelter. Only one cider on tap but a wide range of beers.
A. T.
A nice locals pub. What impressed me was the old photos on display, showing the pub and ex landlord many years ago. History of the premises is worth keeping on show.

❤️ The Approach Tavern is short walk from Bethnal Green tube and situated close to Victoria Park. I visited late on a Friday afternoon with a mate on a crawl around many of the fine establishments E2 has to offer. This boozer offers a good selection of beers either canned, bottled or on draught, I recommend checking out the huge black boards for what’s on offer. There was a nice local atmosphere about the place with mix of punters, some were having a drink and a catch up and there was a family and their bulldog enjoying a meal. The pub is nicely decorated with a rustic Victoria feel with big mirrors, high ceilings and the bar looks great! If your peckish the food varies from pizzas for 6 quid to roasts on a Sunday, yet again you can check the boards for specials. There is also an art gallery upstairs which my daughter visited last year, she said it showcases contemporary art and sculptures. If your ever in E2 I would definitely recommend a visit to the The Approach Tavern it’s a solid boozer.
📊 Information correct on visiting 13/10/17

A handsome traditional boozer, with a buzzy vibe, full of cool East London types, but not so hip as to be off putting. Friendly team, sturdy and tasty roast lunches and a good range of beers on tap.

How to approach this. Did you know when a plane lands, the pilot refers to it as the approach. Did you know when a plane crashes, the pilot refers to it as the main course served at the approach? Charred wreckage that also goes by the name Haddock and Chips. No survivors. Especially not the haddock, who must feel hard done by, that his short life, bereft of love, companionship and longevity in the English Channel was ended, only to disappoint someone at table 19.
When our food did arrive (1.5 hours late) after the first order was mistakenly consumed by another table. This table had made the common mistake of ordering lamb cutlets and upon being presented with fish and chips, not spotting the difference. Easy mistake to make. After all, both dishes are served by the approach. Still, the pub rectified their mistake by apologising and then doing nothing for a considerable amount of time.
As an an aside, or side, the halloumi fries are missing presumed fed (to another table). Halloumi might resemble the rubbery inner tubing of a bicycle wheel, but on this occasion, the halloumi fries are the Tour De Amateur peleton when it crashes, a pile up of monstrous failure.
Me and my girlfriend met at the approach. We come here every year because it’s a hilarious place, which outdoes itself each year in the tragic comic script that it writes for itself. It is a familiar sinking feeling, much like a submarine captain must feel, once more depending into the North Sea, what’s next, what depths of despair await next?
Me and my girlfriend come here because it brings us together, much like 19 year old heroin addicts from Texas were bonded during Vietnam jungle tours in the 70’s.
Much like many of the soldiers in the jungle (thank you for service) the halloumi fries were never seen again.

Great food and wine. We had a delicious roast lamb here. Recommend
T. S.
I have been here a couple of times, the first time was great, good food and good service, however the second time my food and those that I was with was burnt which was quite disappointing
m. h.
Lovely pub, 22 beers and ciders on draft. Great food
s.
[ EDIT: went back again last week. Service much improved. Seems they are working on it. Good stuff. ]
Came for the roast and to watch the football outside. Roast was delish but service v slow.
Picture and sound quality good. 2 screens for 2 games simultaneously. It was raining heavily and roof is a bit leaky. so depends where you sit.
Some of the staff friendly others quite rude. I've worked in bars, theres no need for attitude like that. Ordering drinks and food was painfully slow outside. and took a long time for food to.come. Roast was good though. Portions generous.
D. B.
Fantastically ran pub. The drink choice is really nice with a nice ipa and locally produced bottled cider. The bar service is brilliant and the clientele there are very friendly. They have a nice covered outdoor seating area.
E. P.
One of my favourite local pubs! Spacious front yard with plenty of tables, cosy with lovely decors indoors. Staff is friendly and available. There's a big variety of drinks and the food is amazing. I'm a big fan of their Sunday roast!
During the Covid-19 situation they've been doing an amazing job keeping customers safe.
Highly recommend if you're in the area!
A. L.
My favourite pub in London. Cosy, charming interior (especially when they light up the fireplace), lovely terrace with heating and a roof, and the best sour beers I ever tasted. Halloumi fries are 👌 too
T. M.
The service: phenomenal, the food: abominable.
I had a lovely time at the pub, but the roast looked like yesterday's leather, and tasted older than that. i'm a fat git and usually clear my plate, but the beef was inedible and I left it on the plate. Do not go there for food.
10/10 for drinks
-10/10 for food
I'm editing this review to a 4/5 from a 2/5 because of the response from the team. Guy was really apologetic and offered me a roast on the house. We all have off days, but I always try and judge people not on their mistakes, but on how they try and make up for them. The approach tavern clearly puts the customer first and that makes up for it all. I'll be goin there again and giving them another chance, and I recommend everyone else does.
D. B.
Large selection of drinks and lots of seating, in a traditional pub with genuine history. Staff are a bit miserable and serious though, and I’ve had to return a couple of pints on different occasions. Food looks epic but have never tried.
M. G.
Lovely venue, let down by staff. We were eating and drinking as six adults, told we couldn't be allowed to open a tab so had to pay upfront after ordering food. I could understand this more if you could just walk out but you have to exit the garden via the indoors making walkouts less likely. She then said she couldn't tell us how much everything was and stood there whilst we sat there adding up items from the menu ourselves to calculate our own bill. We were then instructed to "make sure" we didn't forget about the "optional" service charge. After dinner it took so long for anyone to come over we gave up on ordering desserts and just left. Shame really, as the space is great.
M. C.
Great place to meet friends. Very friendly staff. Fantastic sunday roast. All round excellent.
D. S.
Friendly pub and did their best to accommodate us during covid 19. Nice beer too!!
J. J.
Great outdoor seating under cover. Parking was easy in the road adjacent to the venue. Menu is limited but everything the group chose was well presented, perfectly cooked and very tasty. The caponate starter/small meal was particularly good. The burgers (both meat and veggie) arrived Psycho style with a steak knife stabbed through the bun and chips were fried to perfection.
D. D.
A wonderful pub. Lovely beer lovely staff and nice nosh.
A real home from home with a stunning pub quiz every Tuesday... seriously booking a table is essential !
E. t.
Excellent! Great pub and good beers. Simple Corvid 19 T&T process and unlike some places no need for a bespoke App/website log in just to order beers. Definitely coming back for another visit
D. J.
Great place, full of class! The manager is such a great guy
L. M.
Roast was fantastic, great choice of beers. Staff very friendly and helpful.
R. B.
Cool pub still so totally glad it is reopened and great front garden but I think they are still remembering how to do a good roast. Will try again in a few months!
T. H.
Lovely little boozer nestled in the back streets of a residential area between Cambridge Heath and Victoria Park. It's got big bright windows, lovely wood floor and bar, open fireplaces and a spaces front garden too. We've found it to be perfect for a Sunday session with roasts.
S. S.
The beautiful bartender who wore glasses gave excellent service from the minute I ordered my drink even though I took my time deciding on what I wanted to eat. There was so much choice on the menu I could hardly decide! I eventually decided on the lamb which was so tender it literally melted in my mouth.
The place has a really relaxed atmosphere with an open fire and good music playing in the background. Any of the staff that I interacted with were really friendly.
C. S.
Decent pub, needs some acoustic treatment, however. If it is busy the noise levels are unbearable
C.
Old country pub style decor with a busy and friendly environment. A good range of high quality range hot meals and bar snacks available. Clean and tidy toilets but only 2 in the ladies which is not ideal for such a busy pub. Lots of seating inside and outside. You are able to reserve tables for an event. Not that cheap compared with my local pubs but nice an occasional drink.
A. J.
Came here for a Sunday lunch for 8 people over the bank holiday weekend. Staff were excellent and the booking was available on time.
Sunday roasts were up there with the best I've ever had in London. Price was as expected for the quality. Good selection of beers on tap and we all left full and happy.
Will definitely be returning again and recommending to friends.
Thanks.
C. A.
Great pub quiz, cute faces in wasabi nuts....
M. P. W.
Lovely Sunday roast best to book for a Sunday so busy !!
a.
Love this place however if your looking for a traditional pub lunch there are less pretentious menu's out there. The only thing I'd change is the food
S. T.
Amazing Sunday roast. Old school pub with game tools. We played cards for hours!
N. T.
Nice cozy pub
r. b.
Cosy pub with a good range of craft beers (some local) and a great jukebox. The food is decent, though it was on the lukewarm side last time I dined. The beer garden is nice and the atmosphere inside and out is always friendly and bustling without being overcrowded.
M. G.
Nice chilled pub
G
Good service and great selection of food n beer
S. H.
Great pub. Lovely food, good selection of beer and a friendly atmosphere. Very helpful staff (Ollie is a real gent!) One of East London's finest destinations!
S. M.
We were at Approach for the England v Sweden World Cup game and it was absolutely perfect. We had two big tables outside and a number of young children and I was so so so impressed at how well they handled the day. Food was really good and really quick. Drinks great and also quick. They kept the place spotlessly clean throughout the day and were unfailingly pleasant and patient, despite the huge crowds. They managed to have full fan atmosphere but still feel suitable for children and just generally handled the whole day absolutely brilliantly - I really could not fault them. Can’t recommend highly enough. Thanks very much Approach!
B. B.
Great gallery. Good beer. Lovely fish and chips from menu
N. B.
Good pub, nice beer
A. M.
Nice pub, great cider options, decent food. Every week day from about 4 to 7 there's some alcoholic drunk American woman here with her noisy messy kids who she has completely given up trying to manage. I assume she drinks so heavily because it helps numb the pain of being a failed parent. So if you like eating whilst kids bang tables, screech in your ears for hours and Americans give you a slurred lecture with cigarette lager breath about trump... This is the pub for you.
G. F.
Fantastic food here, I had a beautiful pork belly. The staff are very friendly, there is usually plenty of space but a cosy atmosphere, and a front garden with lots of space to sit outside. All in all a great experience for low key drinks and dinner!
K. R.
Great local pub, from birthday celebrations to weekday drinks all rounder good pub. Recently changed hands, hoping the food menu standards are kept as previously. The previous menu was definitely above generic pub standards.
K. M.
Only stopped in here by chance, they had bookings but found a table for the 2 of us and as we only had a couple of drinks all was good.
E. B.
Food and staff always amazing, always loads on even with COVID.
Best part is their beer garden out front, worth a visit! Amazing atmosphere
P. R.
Nice chilled out old style East End pub , very good lunches , i had fish & chips ( home made) with peas & tartar sauce , really nice , my mate had a home made shepherds pie , delicious!! good Beers for later , nice experience 😁 👍👍
A. L.
Great selection of beer and tasty food. Staff are exceptionally knowledgable and friendly, we were looked after by shivon who made great recommendations for us and had us smiling all night. Thanks and can’t wait to come back!
S. B.
Delicious Sunday lunch great atmosphere
M. V.
Really love this place - the service is second to none! A very attentive staff member made excellent wine recommendations and went beyond the call of duty to cater to my dietary needs. It's got a warm and friendly local pub feel about it and the real fire makes for a cosy night out. Highly recommended!
Z. H.
been here with my parents and young children loads of times always felt very welcome and comfortable on weekends normally theres two men that normally work behind the bar and serve food they are very friendly and go out there way to make it a great experience! However on a Thursday afternoon a lady who worked there was very unpleasant i visited with my family and went to sit at a table that was reserved for a band at 5pm!!! we visited at 2pm she said oh you cant sit there we are setting up! then the table next to it i went to sit she had a funny look on her face my dad was watching the racing on his phone quickly at the bar she told him if he wanted to listen to that he has to move away from the bar sit round the corner!! I have never felt so uncomfortable in my entire life I'm so disappointed as i won't be visiting again and this is our local to be honest i felt so unwelcome i wanted to leave!! very upsetting considering the amount of times we used this pub saying all that this was a once bad experience but i don't expect to be treated like that the food on the other hand is beautiful cant fault it best pub food I've ever had and the two guys that work there on the weekend are lovely
A. M.
Great outdoor area, and some very good beer. I particularly liked their White Beer (name alludes me). I would be interested to see how this place goes in winter, with the outdoor heaters, it could be a very nice, atmospheric environment to enjoy.
A. T.
Pub. Solid boozer. Absolute classic.
s. c.
It's been at least 10 years since I was last to pay a visit but it's still a lovely welcoming pub with great taps and a good menu. Slightly pricy food but still worth a visit any time you're near the park
C. B.
This is one of my favourite London pubs. Its old and has a great all year beer garden. The beer selection is good and the food is very tasty. Highly recommended.
I. G.
Excellent outdoor area, great beers on tap, and situated on the very pretty Approach Rd.
p. B. O.
An awesome pub, the burger is AMAZING!!
J. H.
Nice pub but I don't get why don't they close at least at midnight-they seem to be quite popular so I don't see the reason behind closing at 11 like any other average pub around....apart from Dundee Arms, of course.🤷🏻♂️
D. C.
The very first pub I went to in the UK. Some good beers and nice staff. The food is a bit expensive but always tasty. Excellent atmosphere and good music (although it could be more varied).
R. F.
What a brilliant tavern!! fantastic east end pub, great food, great atmosphere, lovely log fire on a cold day and super staff, cant wait to go again!! If your looking for that special east end pub then this is it...Highly recommended!!!
M. G.
Great pub, friendly staff. Anthony Joshua said we should leave more google reviews so yeah these guys are top
S. A.
Everything you want for a Sunday Roast. Kid & Dog friendly and lots of families get together here, so booking for a Sunday slot is essential. Lovely terrace as well!
D. S.
The Approach Tavern is the perfect spot to grab some lunch with colleagues on your midday break. The service is swift and friendly and the food comes fast so it's convenient if you have a short break. Menu is extensive and the food - delicious.
R. K.
This is a great pub for a casual drink or a night out with friends, with the option to sit inside or outside. A good selection of food is available.
K. P.
The chicken is to die for! Billed as somewhat spicy, it turned out to be not hot at all and so palatable by mere humans.
Great choice of gins and tonics to accompany them in a no-frills "local" pub.
J. D.
Bit of a classic. You can't go wrong with the Approach, I don't think. Just the right combination of slightly-hipsterish and cosy old man pub. Nice beer, plenty of seating and the food is generally good, if a bit pricey.
b. g.
Great pub, better than than the average beer pub grub. Selection of UK and international style beers more than to please anyone. Go if you're in the area!
H. S.
We went for the football so they were absolutely rammed but the service was still fantastic.
R. P.
Great atmosphere, lively and friendly staff. Food and drinks is top notch, so was the service. Good job!
J. K.
A nice high ceiling pub with large corner site offering a lot of space .. With a decent menu and at least five real ale on tap , what’s not to like about this local east end pub .. Brilliant
J. W.
Sunday Roast has got much better here than last time I had one. Excellent Jukebox selection, good beer. This is a very good pub
N. A.
Good selection of beer, well above average food for a local pub, and the neighborhood environment is tough to beat. One of the things we'll miss most when move out of the area.
t. a. l. f.
The traditional English pub not many left now this is one of the few. We are visiting London for a few days we are from Ellesmere port none left there so a pleasure to be in one. Good food and good beer.
A. R.
Great pub, don't assume you've booked a table with their automated email response though... Like I did! Wait for confirmation email!

Really good quiz (although wish it started an hour earlier - will get more players). Food drink options are great. Friendly staff.
D. D.
Cozy and local, despite its fairly large size. It once had events upstairs, not sure why it stopped. Strong and eclectic range of beers and ales. Friendly staff.
S. L.
The place is very nice however me and my work colleagues were celebrating a good result on important audit and one member of staff was unexpectedly rude asking us to move and "keep it quiet, yes !!!! " although we spent about £40 each (4 of us)
a. m.
nice lively pub where we came to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. the chicken supreme was fantastic , good beers and friendly staff all helped make it a really pleasant evening.
M. S.
Great local pub with outdoor seating, traditional pub atmosphere and decor. Nice food and walking distance from the park.
J. R.
Good food and friendly service. A bit on the pricey side. Wines were excellent especially the English pinot noir.
S. S.
Does a great Sunday lunch, love this place especially in the winter when they have the fire going. Staff always seem welcoming and accomodating.

Lovely roast good choice of sri ks and great bloody mary

AMENDED REVIEW: I had a bad experience there not so long ago as one of the shift managers was having a bad day and decided to take it out on the customers.
However, the Landlord Samuel Brookes has since contacted me, as has the shift manager in question, to apologise.
I haven't been back since as I don't live close by but I very much appreciate Sam reaching out to me and offering to make amends next time I come in. After speaking with Sam I believe that it was a one off incident and I would expect my experience would be very different if I visit again.
A. L.
Very friendly battle cruiser. Dog friendly with dog treats behind the bar. Serves food for humans too. Will visit again
a. L.
