Reviews of The Bear And Staff
r. a.
Bang in the heart of theatre land and a perfect place for a pint and some classic pub grub before a show. We shared a tasty but greasy calamari starter. Served with a lovely aioli. I opted for a rich, well filled, suet pastry game pie but there were lots of others to choose from. My partner had two small sides of mac n cheese and beef croquettes. Everything was well presented and tasted great. Nearly lost a star with no WiFi but food and service was just too good.
J. R.
My most favourite pub in London. We use it often. Dark an moody settings are what most pub goers like. A really great pub if you like this.
K. L.
Nice place, good food, but the waiter was neither efficient nor very nice and we waited for our food a loooooooooooong time, despite that the place wasn't busy.
S. F.
Great pub grub. Really friendly and helpful staff and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Really good selection of food. Never felt rushed even though they were busy. Will be back again soon
M.
Perfect customer service and good pub, we tried the famous Sunday roast but it is not like in the photos we saw in google maps, the meat portion was very small as can be seen in the photo and it was not so bad, the loaded fries were very good and the ciders are served with a strawberry inside.
J. A.
Lovely place. Staff at bar we're a bit rude and seemed to put locals first but overall a good experience
J. R.
Good place for drinks. Friendly staff, not bad prices, good atmosphere.
J. B.
Excellent selection of beers and gins in this Nicholson's pub situated on Charing Cross Road near to the theatres. Pleasant and friendly staff. We had the fish and chips which were some of the best we have had in a pub for a very long time.
J. F.
The waitress who served myself and my family, was patient and very attentive. The barman personally took us to our seats. Food and drink was superb and very reasonably priced. Customer service was fantastic. I can fully recommend this place and I will most definitely be coming again!

The Bear & Staff dates back to 1714 (the current building 1878) and sits rather pleasingly on the corner of Bear Street... so named after The Bear pub which was once on this same street, or potentially named after Augustine Beare, a glazier who worked near here). The bear & staff itself is the crest of the Neville Family.
As a Nicholson’s chain pub it retains a fair amount of dark wood historic pub charm - with this branch in particular adorned by various old drawings and photographs of bears, together with a satisfying food menu. Charlie Chaplin used to drink and dine here, so perhaps you should too!
The only negative is that the opposite side of Bear Street (though it’s really little more than an alley) is rather ugly and so detracts from the charm somewhat if you are sat outside (the hustle and bustle of nearby Leicester Square is a given and should be embraced!).
If you found my review helpful or informative plus give it a thumbs up 👍🏼 Thank you!

Arrived after very long journey from Cumbria and were greeted by friendly, welcoming staff: a great start to a City break. Food was gorgeous
B. B.
Lovely pub with outdoor seating and heating. Reasonable prices, really good quality food but service was a little slow. Would definitely return
M. P.
Love this place. A good old fashioned pub in the heart of the West End. A must visit whenever you are off to see a show, or just in the local vicinity. Great choice of beers, and efficient and friendly staff. 😊
L. D.
A great sausage house! We had two types of sausages duck and cherry and lamb with apricot. We had a 3 year old with us also. She had fish goujons with mashed potatoes and garlic bread and she loved it. The lagers and cider were exactly what we needed for such a delicious meal.
J. M.
Great place to have a drink close to Trafalgar square shops and theatres
K. T.
Very tiny venue , in the heart of the west end . Out doors is very public and busy . Decor is adequate , slightly old fashioned . But quite nice. Victorian like myself 20 stars nice staff.
D. P.
Friendly bar staff but I think lunch isn't the right time to go. Felt a bit uncomfortable, like we were eating before they were open, because it was so empty and staff were doing admin etc just behind us. Only other customer had ordered chips and had been forgotten about (although staff apologized). Vegan burger was really good, surprised it didn't come with fries like the other burgers (being the most expensive burger). Toad in the hole was a good sized portion but not great quality. Disappointed as we booked this place after seeing the positive food reviews. If we hadn't had a 25% off offer it would have been 2 stars.
k. F.
Fantastic pub grub. Ask for Sarah wonderful personality. Good honest local pub grub.
Great stuff.
R. B.
My friends and I only called in for a couple of drinks last Saturday afternoon whilst our wives were touring Kensington Palace, but we thought that the atmosphere, staff & other customers in the bar were all very welcoming - the beer wasn't bad either... 😉 We were only visiting London for the weekend, but the next time we are up in the Big Smoke, we will certainly make a point of calling in 👍
S. C.
Nice pub, well kept pint of London pride. Ridiculously expensive, but blame the rates west end pubs have to pay. As said,a decent pint and decent boozer.
S. T.
Small and very busy pub, only went in to shelter from rain, enjoyed our time there.
T. T.
Lovely little pub with loads of English charm and a large selection of drinks. Unfortunately it's also got a very loudmouthed large member of staff who's very rude and obnoxious which just ruined it for me.
D. H.
They do an excellent selection of home made pies. Great service but you will need to book as the restaurant is quite small.
p.
Very nice pub. Wasn't too many people when we came. We ordered the Sunday Roast and it was moist and tasty. Also tried the sticky toffee pudding with icecream which was a nice dessert. Waitress was brilliant she was quick and friendly. Highly recommend.
d. l.
Brilliant pub and the food was 5 star really enjoyed our time in there and the waitress upstairs was fantastic.
C. B.
Well worth a visit for a pre theatre meal and drinks. Can be busy but then, good pubs usually are.
D.
Hidden gem of traditional, very good quality, British pub food. In Charlie Chaplin's dining room, hidden upstairs, in this traditional pub just off Leicester Square.
Most meals costing £10-15 (as of Feb 2018). Picture is of their Beef on the bone Sunday Lunch for £13.75
L. W.
Great atmosphere. Good choice of beers, wines, ciders and spirits. Seating inside and outside. Good place to people watch as well. Food is also available to order.
R. B.
An interesting pub with a long history explained using pictures signs and plaques inside and outside the building. We visited early in the day and found plenty of space to have a quiet drink and read about the history of the place. We passed by later in the evening and it was packed out. Not a great range of beers but OK and the service was quick and efficient. Although we did not eat there were plenty of people around us who seemed to be enjoying the food.
T. Y.
Cozy dinner area on the second floor, dinning in the Charlie Chapin dinning room make fish and chips totally authentic.
M.
One member of staff was a bit rude at closing time, I realise you want people to drink up at closing time but at least be polite. Also a group of tourists sat down at a table not knowing you were closing and know one told them. After about ten minutes I told them you were no longer serving. The customer service in most pubs in London is shocking it's a take it or leave it attitude. No wonder there all closing down.
F. E.
Dining area was upstairs, away from the pub which I liked. Comfortable seats. Friendly service. Lovely food, waited about 40 minutes to be served.
D. I.
Lively traditional pub but jeez, the radiators were bouncing, waaaay too warm inside.
T. L.
This review is for drinking, I did not try the food. And, honestly, if you're after a drink around Leicester Square without a queue or hassle, this is a great bet. Yes, there are no doubt more quirky or artsy pubs around the area, or more high-end places as well. But when you're in central London, right smack-bang in tourist central, sometimes all you want is friendly pub that serves a reasonably priced beer or wine without a long queue to get it. And, in that respect, The Bear & Staff delivers. Even at peak time, say weekdays at 6-7pm, there's not usually a long wait at all - and there's an alright selection of drinks to choose from (from local London ales to Stella and Peroni). So honestly, if you want a drink without the hassle of crowds and queues, in a traditional pub environment (where there is usually seats available inside, although you can stand outside too), then I'd check this place out.
J. G.
Very convenient for theatres. The upstairs restaurant was atmospheric and the food was hot and tasty.
B. G.
was told to give this pub a visit by a friend and wasn't disappointed.
nice clean and tidy pub with friendly chatty staff.
nice upstairs restaurant with nice views of charring cross road ( excellent for people watching while you eat)
also learned that its the pub where Charlie Chaplin used to rehearse before his theatre performances.
also has a good selection of ales, lagers and spirits.
definitely worth a visit.
D. G. M.
This is always a great place to visit, with a wonderful atmosphere.
With a varied selection of beers, lagers and real ales, not to mention spirits, there is something for everyone.
If it's food you are after there is a quite an extensive menu, from bar snacks, to traditional pub food. Plus, new and exciting dishes are added regularly
Being located in the heart of the West End, it is a very popular pub, so booking for a meal is advisable.
This pub is a true gem and has a long and illustrious history, as it was frequented by many a colourful character, both good and bad. The most notable of these was Charlie Chaplin, after whom the restaurant is named.
M. A.
Lovely upstairs dining room. Small, intimate space with a rowdy old fashioned pub downstairs. Good food. Moderately priced, excellent service.
M. T.
Great atmosphere for our matinee drink on a cold eat eve
p. g.
Great, great pub.. popped in for one.. and 6 later out we stumbled.
N. S.
Good guiness relaxed atmosphere..... good stop off pub
R. B.
Nice pub, good beers, good staff. Food is tasty to.
D. S.
Nice pub. Worth's a visit if you are thirsty and around
D. B.
Had roast dinner very nice too busy downstairs to have drink afterwards
R. W.
Great little pub, nice drinks, great atmosphere and friendly staff.
J. K.
The staff were great the drinks were good . However honestly speaking I can’t say the same for the roast beef we got. The potatoes were dry the roast beef wasn’t hot at all and was hard to cut. Furthermore the gravy was very watery.
Would return back here for the drinks though.
So for that I give this place 3 starts.
R. L.
Friendly staff, good beer.
T. A.
Super friendly waiting staff. Excellent recommendations. Went for the pies, might go for the fish n chips.
A. L.
The best of English pub food in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
B. B.
Great food, Ale and service upstairs at The Bear and Staff!
R. X.
Love coming here! :)
Som and her colleagues are most welcoming and attentive.
Can recommend the Pulled Pork Chips! Delicious!

M. G.
Darn good service and food . A must for a good meal and pint.
A. G.
Quaint little English pub right in the centre of the Tourist area
J. L.
Stunning food, great service, try the chocolate brownie, stunning!
R. S.
Friendly staff and good service prices not too bad for a west end pub
P. L.
Average pub, nice staff, very overpriced food
D. S.
Great place top class service a proper drinking place. Super clean super welcoming. Thank you
M. G.
excellent fish and chips, not greasy at all. Friendly staff.
A. H.
My daughter and I have not been to London since my husband died 3 years ago. We used to come every year for West End Live and had visited here a few times previously. It was nice to come back and be greeted with polite, friendly people. It might be a while before we get back to London but will certainly be back for a beer when we do. Also extremely impressed that you have gluten free beer xx
I. R.
Fantastic dining room with excellent food and perfect for a birthday meal. Discovered a day later that my girlfriend's card was cloned at this place. Be aware - ignore response from the owner - her card wasn't used anywhere 2 days before or after visiting The Bear and Staff so the card cloning definitively happened here. Avoid.
K. K.
Friendly service, good selection of beer
J. L.
Was in London for a few days and ate here twice. The Pies are really quite good. I thoroughly enjoyed the chicken pie and my partner enjoyed his sheppard pie. Was a shame they sold out of the duck and rib pies. Good selection of beers on tap and the staff are lovely. Perfect pub scene ambiance. Good place to pull up after a long day exploring Leicester and Trafalgar Square, or before the theatre.
M. M.
Lovely place, there wasn't loads of seating available inside but the atmosphere was still great! This pub is just off Leicester Square but it doesn't feel like that at all, not rammed to the brim and you get served relatively quickly! Honestly a great place to catch up with old friends.
C. P.
Nice place with covid safe service. Staff friendly and very helpful. Good variety of beer ( 2x peroni approx 13£
G. O.
The staff were great as well as the food.
D. B.
Only popped in for a quick drink
Nice place
M. P.

S. H.
Nice little place with some good bear and a nice atmosphere.
A. F.

Very welcoming xx
A. C.
Very pleasant staff, food good
K. P.
Nice traditional English pub
Friendly bar staff
Just across road from Leicester Square tube
T. Y.
It wouldn’t be fair to rate it anymore or any less as I was there for like 35 minutes.
1. Upstairs was rustic and lively like any old English
Pub.
2. Doesn’t have the ‘charm’ though, imo...
3. Was a wee packed...many are here for a ‘before
lunch drink’. Mostly locals...
4. Err...the way down to the toilet was really
creepy. Maybe I’m sensitive but my hair stood.
It’s probably an old bomb shelter then as many
old buildings have them.
P. H.
What an amazing find this pub is! It really does have it all... great selection of drinks... we went for the showcase guest ale - amazing! Also the raspberry gin and Mediterranean tonic which the knowledgeable barman garnished with juniper and mint.
For food we had the classic fish and chips (probably the best I've ever tasted) and also tried the Gin and tonic sausage with mash - also very very good!
No room for dessert this time sadly although they did look amazing as they came past us!
And to top it all - we got to experience all this on their outdoor terrace area whilst soaking up the sun and people watching on their way to nearby Leicester Square!
Loved it!!
J. A.
Great pub.. really good food!! Staff were so friendly and helpful.. would definitely recommend and will definitely visit again.. i loved my sunday roast, my friends loved their roasts and deserts were amazing.. easy 5 star..
p. p.
Had a meal before seeing a play at the Garrick Theatre.
The barman was friendly and helpful.
We went upstairs to the dinning room and was looked after very well.
I had the mixed grill and found it to be plentiful and tasty. My partner
had the steak and said it was lovely.
All in all a pleasant experience and didn't break the bank.
T. F.
Poped in for a very quick rum to keep the cold out and ended up spending far too long there. It's a (for the area) quiet little pub. The formidable lady behind the bar appeared to be doing the work of ten with a smile and looked after us as if we were one of the regulars. Nice little pub with lots of charm...and great staff.

Run by the Nicholson's pub food chain. It has fairly Good beers. Nice food that one would expect from a pub. Between 9 and 11 beers on tap. I tried on of their canned beers instead since it was a mild hazy IPA.
Big plus- they take major contactless pay services which makes it very convenient with travellers.
J. B.
A really nice pub with a good atmosphere and particularly nice Pies!
D. H.
Food and staff very nice, lovely decor but the loos were unbearable
D. F. (.
Best of pub in central London, good food, good drinks, very kind staff.

Staff seemed really lovely, good pints

A. H.
Great atmosphere and food
D. P.
Great staff. Wonderful service. Food was really nice. Good to see social distancing and cleaning tables. Well worth a visit
G. S.
Traditional pub. Cosy and not too busy.
S. K.
Lovely pub Leicester Square lovely pie and mash meal and a real great pint of Camden Ale Quiet which was a bit unnerving for Central London though the whole city is quiet at the moment
C. H.
Although the portion of Hunter's Chicken was a bit small for a big bear like me, the price we paid for good food and drink in a nice, atmospheric pub just off Soho / West End in London was very reasonable. Definitely a good British meal at a fair price in what I would consider an authentic pub, old boys included.
A. M.
Was a great pub to stop and have a cider!
T. H.
Had a beautiful meal and drinks in your pub last night and thank you for the experience. The only downside to our evening was when a middle aged lady arrived and started using the most disgraceful language we'd heard. She seemed to be known to staff but her drunken foul mouth was very disappointing. After saying that we will be visiting again and thank you for a great evening.
H. G.
Good experience. However bit small and busy with covid
E. C.
Great pub in the heart of London's theatreland. Always a pleasure to visit this well kept pub with interesting ales served by friendly staff. Highly recommend this place to rest the feet after pavement pounding.
D. F. (.
Best of pub in central London, good food, good drinks, very kind staff.
j. “. C.
Nice bar but poor selection of beer unless you like lagers
C. T.
Can actually find a table here on a hot, Friday evening. Don't know how but it manages to feel like a local. Drinks reasonable, Amstel under £5. Staff really relaxed and a restaurant upstairs that I've not checked out. Really nice bolt hole - everyone else stay away!
l.
Great pub lunch place with a fairly attractive selection of ales and lagers. Apparently Charlie Chaplin was a usual here. Menu has a large variety of starters and mains, with special list of sausages all around the UK ( including mash potatoes and vegetables) average main will be round £12. Highly recommended. Extra seats upstairs.
A. e.
Friendly staff, good service, good choice of beers and clean facilities. 👌
H. Y.
The staff was very friendly and the food was pretty good. We had the Sunday roast and the beef was a little dry. Also, the Yorkshire pudding was very crisp and hard... Almost like a cracker
M. B.
Nice bar. Great location
V. M.
Great little pub. We ate upstairs as a walk in. The food and drinks were very good. Staff were friendly and efficient. Dropped a star as a few items not available on the menu, however considering the location and time of year I guess it's understandable.
J. C.
Great pub.
Came here alone on a busy Friday night, had a couple of drinks whilst waiting for a friend.
Busy little pub but great friendly staff, lots of good ales, good atmosphere and not intimidating to be alone with a pint.
Will be back x
A. W.
A lovely pub with very friendly staff. Lovely little touch having heaters outside. Would recommend this place. We went on a busy Saturday and the service was excellent
D. P.
Great staff. Wonderful service. Food was really nice. Good to see social distancing and cleaning tables. Well worth a visit
S. L.
Staff seemed really lovely, good pints
M. F.
Visited with a 9 year old the staff were Lovely very friendly and helpful. Good food and great value. Would definitely recommend.
L. V.
Really nice Nicholson’s Pub. Always a warm welcome and comfortable seating. Fun atmosphere. Food was amazing. Staff attentive. Reasonable prices for food and drink. Good range of beers and wines. I would highly recommend this pub.
T. H.
Typical London pub, packed and pricey🤣
V. I.
Nice bar in the heart of the town!
A good choice to enjoy an ice cold beer! Very good service and reasonable prices!
Relaxing atmosphere with outside sitting too!
There is a big screen for waching sport .
M. W.
Good selections of beers coupled with friendly service.
N. W.
Nicholson’s formula through and through, but good for where it is, and plenty of comfortable, low seating.
B. R.
The Bear and Staff is another Nicholson's pub further down in Charing cross road that is ideally placed for a pre theatre meal as it opens at 5 pm for dining. The restaurant, situated upstairs to the bar, offers a very comprehensive menu with "specials" offered at various times like a Burns Night special to celebrate Robbie Burns. The staff are always friendly and helpful and go out of their way to make your visit enjoyable. This particular Nicholson's pub is always our first place to go when we visit the theatre which we fo regularly. Highly recommended.
L. T.
Food and atmosphere was good. But was made to wait excessively long (45 mins) for 3 women to finish their drinks. Staff could have asked them to mo to the bar. That being said the staff were amazing.
L. F.
Lovely pub and team !
S. H.
Really friendly atmosphere in the pub and excellent food in the small restaurant upstairs. All the staff were pleasant. I definitely recommend.
J. S.
Great pub, excellent service! Very clean & hygienic! Fabulous selection of gins too!!
g. p.
just what i needed , miserable cold weather and stuck in London for the day , walked miles and came across this little gem, straight away met by friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. Good clean quirky little place with attentive staff, typical London prices but very happy for a warm welcome and a cold beer. This would be my drinking hole if i lived or heaven forbid worked in London
F. (.
A really nice pub in the heart of London, the food is good and it has tables and chairs outside, where you can have a drink, or a smoke if you wish. The prices are reasonable considering its located right near Leicester Square itself
A. B.
Nice pub, but sometimes seems to have weird opening hours. We arrived at around 10pm after seeing a film in Leicester Square and were told that the pub was closing. Disappointing as the pub is actually quite nice, but unpredictable opening hours don't help!
S. J.
Great pub in the heart of London. Food looked gorgeous, we were kinda jealous we had eaten earlier :-) excellent beers on tap too incliding few local ones so a nice spot to stop off to rest while sightseeing
R. T.
Great little pub, did not have the food but for london the food is not a bad price, bar staff very friendly. Drinks were perfect after a long long walk, camden hells is a very nice beer.
G. G.
Lovely little pub, friendly staff, food was really pleasant, plenty of beers available. I'd advise sitting inside so you don't get harassed by homeless people.
J. H.
Lovely staff in dining area, very good service and they even split our bill before we paid! Food was also amazing, well worth the price.
Y. A.
Real british pub for tourists like me 😎
Loved it!
M. B.
Lovely traditional english pub right in the heart of the west end, amazing vibes, friendly and helpful staff, tasty and reasonably priced food for the area and a really good range of craft ales and beers as well as endless gins too!
S. T.
My wife and I loved the food. Cheese cake was superb!
M. G.
Absolute hidden gem....don't waste time looking at the menus of all those big chains in and around Leicester square if you want a really good meal...this place did fantastic pub grub, served by polite staff in a relaxed atmosphere looking out onto the street...( upstairs restaurant).... wouldn't go past this place ever again when visiting London....young lad who served us... Richard.....his manners were impeccable too
L. G.
Amazing pub. Classic British pub.
T. P.
Nice bar, in the centre of London. Drinks are not ridiculous priced. Also do a selection of bar snacks, but we never ordered. Would come back.
J. T.
Very nice place Togo for dinner or just to grab a few drinks before a show. We had dinner there and the food was amazing, service was also very good. Prices may be a bit steep, but it's worth it.
L. 1.
Really nice staff and reasonable prices for location
S. C.
My partner and I had spent the day at the tower of London, after which we decided to go for dinner. We spent some time looking for places to eat such bubba gump shrimp and other places in China town. We had almost given up when my partner caught the bear and staff out the corner of her eye, I can honestly say she had found the gem of London. On entering the building you could feel the great atmosphere. We were both greeted so friendly and was directed upstairs to the dinning area, which felt like an old English tea room. It still had some of the period decor and you could expect Sherlock Holmes to walk in at any point. Nothing was to much trouble for our waitress Som who had the biggest smile I had seen all day. Martin and Tommy did an amazing job with the food as both me and my partner found it hard to move after finishing our food. Will defiantly been returning soon.
D. H.
Food and staff very nice, lovely decor but the loos were unbearable
J. S.
Nice and characteristic place to meet with your mates in Central London, but quite busy. Better book table in advance if you are planning more than 1 or 2 pints.
H. C.
Good pub, pub food available, no crisps, only had pork scratchings. Near Leicester square and prices not insane. Smoking/ outdoor area with heatlamps. Toilets downstairs.
J. G.
Great place for a Saturday lunch! We loved the food and service even though one of the waitress was rude.
A. L.
Sat outside for drink with family before going upstairs for meal. Good range of cask ales. Restaurant is in a lovely victorian corner room overlooking theatreland hustle and bustle below. Food was great, fillet steak cooked perfectly and reasonably priced (£20). Good wine. Very attentive and well informed waiter. Nicely rounded off our citybreak.
R. K.
Great local pub with a friendly atmosphere. Staff were very nice here. The perfect place to watch the world go by, whilst having a drink in London.
S. H.
Small pub clean and tidy with a good selection of drinks
Not tried the food but looks pretty standard for a nicholsons pub
A bit pricy for me at £5.20 a pint of cider but it is in the west end and probably need higher prices to survive
Probably cheeper places around
Expect it gets busy late at night
p. e.
Nice place, pleasant atmosphere
C. R. H.
Great beer selection and literally the tastiest pies on Earth! Great choice of fillings and amazing freshness. We had an amazing time in this pub!
G. S.
Traditional pub. Cosy and not too busy.
R. G.
Yesterday's breakfast here was smashing, not sure why it had to come in a beaking tray but it did help with mopping up the bean juice!
The staff were engaging and polite.
I am glad I was not one of the poor party that came in thinking they had booked a table a week in advance as frankly thier reception and services could have been a hole lot better, I don't think they wanted to be told Oh God someone's not put it into the book..... go sit over there..... then left. I hope things improved for then, ia m sure they would have enjoyed the food as I did.
A. V.
Atmospheric old pub with lots of wood right in the heart of Leicester Square. Great place from where to enjoy a drink, chat and people watch.
I. A.
It was my first pub when i came for the first time in London 2 months ago. A joyful place with kind staff and good beer :) I hope i will comeback soon.
D. H.
I would like to give the bear and staff restaurant a review ,my wife and i are from northern ireland we would come to london twice a year,we were in the bear and staff in february and again today Saturday 26th may . the staff are really friendly and welcoming.I had the mixed grill, steak gammon, chicken, sausage all cooked to perfection and well presented and piping hot.my wife had the fish and chips.again cooking to perfection.when we are in london a visit is not complete to we visit the bear and staff.I'm a chef myself ,the chef was at the front of house when we were leaving ,i thanked him for the excellant meal and commended him on his chefing abilities .his boss should be a happy man ,having friendly, skilled staff .well done to all at the bear and staff @ leicester sq london .see you again soon .desi hunter northern ireland.
