Reviews of The Birkbeck Tavern
G. N.
absolutely love this place! It’s not just a pub but a home for the locals. KJ, Pete and Maria are always looking after the customers and especially older adults and vulnerable adults. The garden is amazing for the summer and indoors you feel like part of a big family. Today the kitchen was open and served Haggis, neeps and tatties with whiskey gravy! Delicious! Thank you chef Pete! Happy Burns night everyone!

Caught it at a quiet time, but seemed a good size pub with a beer garden

Actually it was my first pub in London. Nice atmosphere, a very friendly owner who will match the beer.
You can play billiard there as well. Totally recommend! Cheers!

The Birkbeck is a lovely pub with a warm welcome. It has a great pub garden and really friendly staff. I always ask about the events coming up - they always have a lot going on.

As a football fan as away day pubs go absolutley outstanding, service 2nd to none. If your an away day team against orinet I would highly recommend. If your a local embrace what's on your doorstep. These 2 are amazing never been a pub that made us feel so welcome.

I went with a friend for our first pint in a pub after Covid lockdown, on a Monday evening. It was pretty dead. There is a lovely beer garden (the reason why I chose the venue) but it was raining so we stayed indoors. There were just a few locals / regulars. Dogs seem allowed. There was no food but we were told we could order pizza and have it delivered on site. We did have table service, which was nice. It's a bit unfair to rate this place based on a rainy Monday evening but on the night it was very dead and soulless unfortunately.

Nice traditional pub with good selection of ales etc.

Friendly staff. Football on screen. No queing for drinks. Friendly pub.
D. B.
Great welcome, everyone friendly, but the pub group needs to provide real ale, food, and occasional live entertainment.
m. A.
Local pub nestled in the backstreets. Nice if you want a quiet drink but lacking a bit of atmosphere vibrance.
C. D.

T. B.

Fabulous pub with good grub! Lovely garden to suit all ages and personalities. Thank you for making a hot and tiring day in the cemetery up the road a special one with cold refreshing drinks and satisfying, tasty BBQ'd food. 5*

Nice beer selection, decent price. I was surprised and pleased since they have a small library ❤️

These kind of pubs are slowly disappearing. This is my local pub and I mean local. It literally is a 2 min walk. It's the kind of place that is not pretensious. Any one can walk in and expect a friendly welcome. My son loves running round the garden and dancing at the jukebox.

Traditional local pub with a great beer garden in the back. Located on a quiet street, it does not look much from the outside, but once your are in—great surprise. Loads of tables and a little bbq space. Family atmosphere, friendly staff, amazing prices 🍺 strongly recommend on a sunny day.

This is a lovely old-fashioned London pub with some good beers. It was let down however by being short-staffed. Busy bar and only one barmaid serving (one had blobbed due to getting wrecked the night before and the 2 blokes in charge couldn't be bothered to give her a hand. One came and got himself a pint then sat back down. The other just sat messing with a load of invoices). We left after 1 beer after waiting an age to not get served. Crying shame.

Traditional and old fashioned British pub. Live music on Saturdays. Located in very peaceful residential area, approximately 5-7 minutes walk from Leyton station. Friendly staff and locals. Very popular with locals. Very nice beer garden. Sometimes they do barbecues there in Summer, and karaoke nights.

Traditional pub with really nice atmosphere and garden. Had my birthday drinks here recently at short notice, and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Definitely my favourite pub in the area.
B. T.
Great beers on in this place. They normally have a good selection of might oak beers which I love.
Staff are friendly, well trained and theres an outdoor area to sit.
Perfect place to go before a game.

Went there for a free gig (money in the pot etc.) last night, to see Steve White and The Protest Family. An absolutely wonderful pub with decent ale and wonderful entertainment. Very busy on the night and the staff were a little over-worked but it was one of the best nights out I've had in ages. If they can provide that kind of entertainment and beer regularly, I will certainly be back. I really cannot wait for my next night out on the W15 with the old freedom pass. #EffingBrilliant

Proper London boozer and a dying breed. Very spacious and full off proper pub paraphernalia and atmosphere. Decent garden which is rare for pubs in built up areas such as this.
Popular with Orient fans but quite a stroll away especially if you arrive via Leyton tube station.
Slightly disappointed by only having Maldon Gold (decent pint) and Courage Best (meh) on cask. Scraped a 4 from me but I judge pubs on the beer. Cask beer
T. M.
Lovely friendly family pub. Great food too. Warm atmosphere. Definitely would recommend a visit
M. W.
An excellent pub with friendly staff. A hidden gem.
m. c.
Local boozer, unspoiled and still (touch wood) unaffected by the scourge of gentrification. A refreshing alternative to most other pubs in east london. Huge garden, perfect in the summer. Pool table and darts
P. P.
Proper old school EastEnd boozer. Visited with Plymouth Argyle a few seasons ago and were all made very welcome by landlady and local. Lovely garden out the back too.
N. F.
A gem, hidden away in the back streets behind Leyton tube. This unassuming local boozer has, in my considered opinion, the best pub garden in the borough, if not London. It's cycle friendly too, an important consideration when you have to organise as many social bike rides as I.
A good selection of real ales, pub games including a reasonable pool table and tasty food mean this is a pub to visit as soon as possible. Just be aware it gets crowded on the Saturdays Leyton Orient play at home
J. E.
Great traditional pub with good drinks, jukebox, pool, darts and a large garden. Been visiting for a few months, staff and regulars are very friendly, great atmosphere.
M. F.
Love this pub! Great local and my dog is very welcome, which is a big draw when paired with the beautiful garden :)

Old East End Pub Used By Leyton Orient Supporters.Nice Garden To Enjoy Your. Pint.Service a Bit Slow When Busy.Behind Leyton Tube Station.
P. R.
Special place friendly locals and excellent bar staff. Great English pub. Highly recommended
C. B. (. L.
Traditional (and friendly) local pub.
Well run by the management team Jacky and John. Live music (bands) and the best actual garden in the area, superb in the summer.
A. K.
Had a beer and played pool. Not a great selection of beers but ok. Landlord was controlling the pool table and he was being a bit annoying with his little rules and regulations but the crowd were alright
P. Y.
Old East End Pub, tucked away from the main road bustle, this lovely local has friendly staff with a good size garden for whiling away those long summer evenings.
N. B.
It's a traditional community pub. Spacious and with a large garden, great real ales, friendly staff and Twiglets!
L. B.
Good beer, friendly staff, carpet that looks like an LSD trip. You'll struggle to find a more quintessentially British pub experience anywhere.
M. L.
Great location and friendly staff.
P. D.
Local ale and friendly staff with nice beer garden. The pub is fairly run down and the clientele may not be for everyone.
R. S.
Very good pub. I will definitely visit again.
C. S.
Great locals, good atmosphere, darts and pool probably one of the better pub places to hang out in leyton

Been here a couple of times. Staff were friendly enough. Unfortunately the beer (London Pride) was below par and served in a plastic cup. I know it was matchday but this was well after the game had finished and we only went for a quiet pint so glass would have been preferable (other people had their's served in glasses)

Great to re-visit what used to be my local 20 years ago. Landlady and landlord are lovely. Went for the comedy night which was fun- great and welcoming atmosphere. Loved the garden and imagine will be brilliant in summer. Nice touches like fresh flowers and candles. Duke box and a pool table. What's not to love about that?!
P. A.
The Birkbeck is a wonderful friendly haven of good quality ales and beers and gorgeous staff.
C. F.
Great pub highly recommend. New management, all for the better. Also Asian food eg. Chinese, Korean, Tai etc will be available on Fridays from the 15th of April.
