Reviews of The Blackfriar
S. M. C.
Lovely little find in the heart of London. The decor is brilliant. Staff were good, fast and efficient. Food was good too - not amazing, but worth the money - and I will definitely be back in the future
K. A.
service was good and food served quickly.a rather reduced menus & virtually no puds.so choose carefully.
veg too Al dente and the pie wasn't as good as last time.atmosphere good and of course fantastic surroundings.

This is one pub you'd want to stop at whilst in London. It's an unusual building with a ln awesome interior - reliefs of monks on the inner walls and a seating area at the back that marble panels/enclaves. Quite unique and impressive especially for a tourist seeking out an interesting place to have a quick pint. It can get busy and folks are often standing outside with their beers. We really liked it when we've visited London and have been here a number of times on our trips in the past and looking forward when I am in London next to drop in for a drink.
(Food looked good but we have not tried any yet - perhaps next visit).
G. M.
Excellent pub, stunning and interesting on the outside, even more so on the inside. It's like drinking in a museum (even has leaflets to explain the history) yet still retains the authentic pub vibe. We'll worth a visit and loads of seating outdoors of the weather is nice.
R. S.
First visit for me here. Decent cask collection. Only a flying visit but will definitely be going back
R. K.
It looks just wow! It feels history inside, very interesting interior (and exterior), friendly and helpful staff, great beer and nice meal. Couldn't be better.
B. D.
Original Art Nuveau and fully operational pub. Something of true rarity, especially for Secession school of Art Nuveau lovers!
Great atmosphere too, plenty of drink and food, very popular.
A. V.
A gem of a pub, super service, very clean with good choice of beers and tasty food 👍 Oh and loads of history ✴️✴️✴️✴️✴️

Although looking ropey on the outside due to scaffolding, my favourite pub in London is a true gem. Lucky to find it almost empty on hottest day of year, was able to take these photos. Its been packed out on previous visits. Oh, and great beer and food too.
G. D.
Used to come here years ago...hasn't changed a bit...thank God...lovely beer...Great atmosphere, the decor is amazing and a great buzz from the punters. Bar staff really friendly even though they were really busy. And of course a great selection of 'PROPER' beer! Thanks Guys xxx

I almost passed on here this afternoon but really glad I didn’t.
My friend arranged to meet her as she works nearby and raves about the place but when I arrived I found the outside was littered with trash and refuse bags. I have to be honest it was an immediate turn off, I expected a grotty and rundown old pub but thankfully I braved the outside to find an exquisite pub hidden behind.
There are ornate and decorative reliefs all across the bar and around the building with wonderful busts of friars throughout. The building has that time warp essence to it where you feel like you’ve entered a relic from a bygone era.
The staff were efficient and friendly. I asked about the bins outside to which they were effusive in their apologies.
The food was better than expected and a step up from the general pub offerings, I had fish while my friend had a very full and hearty salad.
The toilets were at the bottom of a very steep stairs so I can only assume it isn’t wheelchair accessible.
All in all I’d rate here very highly but don’t be put off by the disaster outside.
A. H.
Great, historical pub. Staff very attentive with a special ‘dining area’ inside the pub. Love it. 👍
h. s.
Went on a guided tour of the area and ended up by the Blackfriar pub. Had a very good award winning steak and ale pie and some excellent real ale. The pub has a superb marbled and bronze sculptured interior. It's a classic must see London pub!
P. J. N.
Very atmospheric place and friendly bar staff. Can absolutely reccomend the fish and chips. The cod is very tasty.
M. P.
Lovely quaint historical pub. Fire although wasn't lit. Lovely food and a mulled cider is the way to go!
D. R.
It's OK a lovely building, expensive cider £6 a bottle, par for the course these days! Difficult to have a quiet conversation however, everyone is so shouty in pubs in my experience. Not easy to find a quiet corner. Nevertheless, nice to gather with a few friends next I'll bring a megahorn me thinks!
R. S.
Perfect bar, that looks smaller from the outside. If you missed the train on purpose or not, grab a pint and you might stay for longer!
p. b.
A lovely traditional pub with impressive artwork and leaded lights.
I had half of a London Pride for £2.65.
Great location, next to the tube and Blackfriars Bridge
S. S.
There really is only one word for the Blackfriar, unique. The interior is the most spectacular example of Art Deco in London, if not the country and is well worth a detour for this alone. Add an excellent range of well kept beers and more than decent pub fare and you can understand why it is almost always crowded. I was a regular there in the eighties and little, including the perilously narrow and steep stairs to the toilets, has changed, but for a far better range of beer. Highly recommended, particularly if you have any overseas visitors you would like to impress, it is a must see for any London pub tour.
B. H.
Worth visiting for the decor alone. Relaxing pub with good food and a good choice of beers. Besides Blackfriars station.

Beautiful bar. Friendly service, great food.
A must visit spot
1.
A fabulous architectural gem. Food is pretty good. Service is lightning fast.
A must visit destination for a London trip
G. S.
Loved this historic London pub. It is unique and deserves a visit.
A. P. B.
This place instantly became in one of my favourites, nice beer selection, amazing food and very fast service by the kind staff. This is the yardstick of how an excellent pub should be!
H. M.
This pub is so great. We happened to walk by it on an evening stroll and I’m so happy we went in. The food is amazing (I got toad in the hole) and very well presented, the atmosphere was great and the staff were very friendly. I also got mulled wine which they offer during the holiday season - so fun. I will definitely come back :)
F.
it is a very nice and characteristic pub in central London. the staff is very courteous and ready to help you choose the different beers. I ordered a really very good meat pie. the price is consistent with the quality of the food and the location. I'll be back
G. S.
Best pub in London. Fantastic decorative features inside and out. Great beer and food and an outside to sit and watch the world go by
d.
Another old school pub in London. Build in 1875. This one has very interesting decorations: Henry Poole's original jolly friars in the form of sculptures and mosaics.
P. M.
So so
For clarity, given the reply: Three stars is a solid "It's OK" (Google's ratings)... and that's how I felt... the bar was dimly lit, it's small so you invariably end up standing in the street, toilets weren't particularly well decorated or clean... so I'd say a fair assessment. I hold my hands up to not having paid particular attention to the interior decor, I guess if it was 'all that' I would have noticed, but I didn't.
D. O.
Great night here. The pub was buzzing and clearly very popular the staff were quick and friendly, the food was AMAZING and our server Mickella couldn't do enough for us.
C. '. H.
Amazing gem of a pub if you want to see something very different on the inside compared to the average pub decor.
The beers and food are good as would be expected of a well known pub, BUT the real draw is the alabaster moulds and marble that adorn the interior.
Well worth a visit.
X. S.
It is a nice and unusual pub but I felt it was not very well prepared for Covid. Small secluded spaces, quite tight, but nice atmosphere. It is a good reflection of how pubs like these have stood the test of time - and they just can’t be adapted to the new times without destroying their history.
Staff were not wildly kind, but overall it’s a nice venue, which I look forward to visiting once Covid becomes less dangerous.
M. O.
What an experience!!!!
My day trip in London had one requirement...It must include a pub lunch at A TRUE ENGLISH PUB! The Blackfriar, more than delivered on this wish.
This beautiful Ale House delivered more than great food, awesome beer and gin selection from local brewers and distillers as well as international ones. It also delivered a spectacularly beautiful and aesthetically pleasing and authentic “feel”.
I had a pie of the traditional English Pie menu. Spectacular. So tasty. And the service...quick, friendly, and professional. I was surprised at finding a Tandoori Chicken and a few modern salads on what I had hoped would be an all English Traditional pub grub menu. Hearty and moorish. But, all it proved was that this pub has everything for everyone and every taste.
I reckon this place is an absolute must visit for every tourist looking for English, and every local looking for a special kind of awesome.
S. B.
Lovely historic bar serving good beer & large portions of food! Toilets very clean and good quality soap too!
I. S.
Came here with a friend on a Friday evening. Impressive selection of ales, stouts & porter. The food was decent too: I had stake, ale & mushroom pie with mashed potatoes, and my friend had sausages & mash. Good size portions. Quite pricey. The service can be hit & miss, depending on who's serving. We had a table reserved for 7pm, my friend also called a day before to re-confirm the reservation, but when we arrived we were told they didn't have his name on the list of reservations. Toilets are downstairs, which isn't great for those with accessibility needs. Overall this is a lovely pub with gorgeous carvings on walls & ceiling telling the history of Blackfriars.
I. C.
Love having a few beers in here before a gig.
Good beer. Great staff. Great food.
D. L.
I loved the interior here. Absolutely one of the most beautiful pubs I’ve ever been too and the cheat cheese croquettes paired with cider was my favorite. Staff was pretty nice as well despite being swamped.
S. H.
What an amazing Art Nouveau interior and good choice of drinks!
T. S.
LOVELY beautiful little pub. Great history and beautiful inside. Well worth a visit.
N. G.
Very good service here and the place was very clean. The friend chicken was overcooked which was disappointing but my friend really liked the salad. Nice sitting-out area for drinks on a sunny day.
M. M.
Amazing indoor. Nice staff. Lack of classic pub atmosphere. Expensive place: 2 beers, 2 glasses of juice, £20
E. F. L. D. C. A.
One of my favourite pubs in London. Perfect on a summers day. The staff are generally helpful and attentive, but the men’s toilets can get pretty bad. Maybe requires some attention.
G. G.
A wonderful pub, oozing with history. You could marvel for hours at the sumptuous interior, with it's monastic themed friezes and carvings. A delight! Good selection of ales.
G. L.
I go every time I'm in London. It's quirky, decent enough food, great place to grab a pint. Crazy busy on weekends, so plan accordingly.
J. G.
One of the most beautiful old pubs in london with ornately carved marble and stone. Make sure you stop here on any and every visit to London!
R. I.
Great old fashioned pub full of history and character. Food looked good, great beer selection and brilliant atmosphere.
C. H.
Incredible 'wow' once you step through the door. Staff were super friendly and beer good.

Great place for after work drinks. The atmosphere is so lively and the vibe is good and friendly. It's also worth a visit just to see the inside.
I. F.
Historic pub, right next door to Blackfriars Station. Relatively expensive, but a good pint nonetheless. Good outdoor seating area also.
C. O.
Awesome staff - special shout out to Frank who worked hard all evening, was attentive and lovely. Beautiful interior. Great location for Blackfriars station (North). Thanks guys we'll be back :)
K. O.
Amazing staff and lovely atmosphere and decent prices. staff are very friendly. The decor inside is just stunning and filled with history. would reccommend to all.
M.
Awesome and unique historical London pub. Easy location, great beer, plenty history. I love this place, been coming here 30+ years.
C. D.
Great cozy bar with ornate wood carving and metal art deco decorating throughout. Busy and warm with good food to boot. Definitely recommend for the local or out of town traveler alike. I wish we'd had time to hang out here longer. One of the more beautiful bars I visited in London.
P. W.
Amazing little place well worthy a visit have not put photos on as not to spoil your experience just go
E. C.
Great experience. Shay is a gent, always looks after us in the best way. We know him from the mudlark, a real gem of a publican when they seem to be a dying breed.
S. (.
Really nice cosy little old English bar, friendly staff and great food. If you are looking for traditional looking English pub, I highly recommend checking this place out. Literally right opposite the Blackfriar station.
J. S.
Very atmospheric. Food selection not large but hearthy. Guinness on tap and ok choice otherwise. What's not to like. Located right next to Blackfriars Station.
M. W.
Amazing art nouveau style decor and not too busy either side of lunchtime. Excellent food and a reasonable selection of beers.
J. L.
Always great beer, and usually great staff, apart from one "lady" who appeared to have a very short fuse, and was quite short with customers.
Luckily for her, I wasn't one of them.
D. R.
A pub filled with character. Great service and superb food and drinks xxx
J. Y.
Cute pub with a great history. The only are nouve pub in London. Was to be demolished but saved by the community. Named for then monastery which had the monks who wore black. Henry the VIII divorce request was even considered here at the monastery.
A. E.
Great, but busy and small pub in the heart of London. Great cider find here, and some excellent traditional British fare. Would suggest getting a reservation. Within easy walking distance of an Underground station, and the Millennial Bridge. Staff were busy, but super friendly.
T. L. P. M.
❤️Corner pub with impressive architecture, brass etchings of monks adorn the walls inside. Nice atmosphere and served quickly on a busy lunchtime.

Wonderful old Pub and the food is excellent.
Hallumy fries are a must!exspecially because they are not soggy but very crispy.
D. B.
Great place, took our family of 5 there last minute after a long day around London. We were staying at Premier Inn nearby so v handy. They were about to close but invited us in warmly and offered the full menu. V v good food and lovely place inside. Recommend.
C. L.
It is always a pleasure to visit "The Blackfriar" and dine there! Diner is great and well tasting and great choice of ales and beers! Great atmosphere there and stunning architecture with lovely details! Staff is awesome!
T. g.
Simply had to have a look inside this building, and oh my I wasn't disappointed. The interior is simply incredible with so much character. The bar winds it way around this unique building. Good selection of beer and other refreshments. Didn't get a chance to eat here so only four stars, if I ever go back and try some I hope to bump it to 5 stars.
A. R.
Fantastic pub inside with so much history well worth a visit good food but a little bit expensive
S. C.
Just the perfect pub. All seats are open inside and they've got a few outside as well. Try one of their cask beers if you're into that sorta thing. The food is a great accompaniment to your pint. Take a nice stroll on the Thames after.
B. B.
What a restful, clean and historic place. Great beer and great food. Fantastic stop near the Railway station.
C. G.
One of the most stunning interiors to any pub I have ever been to - friendly and helpful staff
J. D.
Amazing pub with tons of history and amazing architecture. Good food and friendly service too!
P. G.
Traditional pub with real history and amazing interior. Good food selection and range of drinks.
J. S.
A warm place in my heart. My first English pub on my first trip to Europe 40+ years ago. The neighborhood has changed a lot, as has the clientele, but I still love it!
J. M.
Apart from in being in London it was marvellous but London prices for drinks are shocking £6 a pint £5 for a small bottle of cider!!!! Rip-off.
D. B.
Great interior. Good food and a good selection of drinks. Will visit again.
G. D.
Decent selection of cask ales but beers on tap are a bit generic. Wine is the usual pub affair, not great but not terrible and overpriced for what it is. Food is average.
Nice setting any time of year. Cosy interior with interesting features for cold dark nights and sprawling tables and outdoor space for a summers day, a rarity in the square mile.
Service can be a long wait but the staff are good and very well mannered, though one can be a bit forgetful.
S. F.
Only went for a pint but a great little pub with a perfect location.
G. S.
Nice piece of British art nouveau pub architecture, nice beer selection and atmosphere. Should be a must to stopping by when in London.
M.
Stopped for a drink and a bite to eat. Great historic interior. Most staff were very nice and welcoming, one however, although very efficient made us feel we weren't entirely welcome. Good, but probably won't go back.
J. H.
I'd heard about this bar from an article on the 10 best pubs in London, and had been meaning to check it out for sometime. Fortunately last weekend I finally got chance to visit, and it certainly lived up to the billing.
Great decor and a good selection of beers to choose from. There's a beer garden outside, for additional seating, which would be great in the summer, though in the dead of winter I preferred to remain inside and stand.
K. S.
Lovely pub with historic interior. Almost looks like a shrinked version of the NY flatiron building.
T. P.
This place has very interesting features and serves great ales and food. Very historic London oub
D. T.
A delightful vibrant pub with helpful staff and fine beer. A dining room with table service and plenty of friars around the walls. A very enjoyable visit.
T. T.
Gorgeous pub, it's worth coming just to look around. Beer selection is decent too, and the food menu looked tasty
T. P.
Wonderful decor, a great range of beers, and handy for the eponymous tube station .and this a worthwhile visit
S. W.
Nice historic pub. Nice pie.. but shame about the rubbery microwaved vegetables
S. W.
Good pub, shame about the staff, think they get fed up with customers , always miserable, and that's after covid
h.
Good place to eat fish and chips or to just have a few beers. Very nice ambience - especially in the dining room.
B. b. J.
I like the ambiance the building itself is gorgeous service is great i love it i will definitely come again
A. M.
Decent enough drinking pub, relatively quick service despite it usually being heavingly busy.
E. S.
Beautiful old pub, worth a visit for the decor alone
D. C.
Fantastic pub with a lovely decor and great atmosphere. Didnt have any food, but the beers were nice and so was the staff. Just being here felt like walking into the year 1900, just so beautiful
E. D.
Stunning decor, look around for writings on the wall. SILENCE IS GOLDEN - my favourite. tasty food!!! Chicken pie was heavenly delitious, sent my best compliments to the chef.
G. A.
Lovely pub full of character, one of London's best. And it's a Nicholson's, so a great selection of ales is guaranteed, as well as food. The 'beyond meat' burger was delicious.
A. C.
Love the beer. And building on the corner is so cute
S. M.
Historic pub near the Blackfriars station. All the dishes we ordered were very tasty: fish and chips, pie, and the hamburgers. Excellent also the Beers. Convenient price and very magical atmosphere.
t. p.
Brilliant pub with good staff food and drink with an interior that has to be seen
L. K.
Busy little pub just outside the station. Ideal place for a quick pint in an atmospheric location. Good selection of beers, tasty pub grub + dinning section.
M.
Went there after work. Food was great. Staff explaned the history about the pub and were sooooo friendly and lovely !!!!!
D.
Very busy old fashioned pub. Full of character and great decor. Good beers and service.
S. F.
Cracking pub with fantastic decor art Nouveau reliefs. Good atmosphere. Good selection of beers. Fiery fever tree Ginger beer which burns the lips
J. G.
Lovely food great pub and nice friendly staff good beer
D. N.
Great pub, decor is breathtaking.
Staff are brilliant.
P. L. R.
If the Black Friar doesn’t have celebrity status in central London, I don’t know where does!
It carries the same name as the whole area and also stands watch over Blackfriars #tube station across the road.
The pub is also one of the most unusually designed in the city.
Outside, the beautiful tiling and masonry are really attractive. Despite going here loads over the years, I’ve only just noticed the ironwork above the door. Inside is very ornate as well.
j. s.
Rather quaint, bronze murals on the walls are very cosy. Guinness was very tasty and the staff were friendly too. Massive capacity outside for a nice day just across the thames from southbank.
N. D.
Very crowded, food was pretty good for a pub, good selection of ciders.
T. J.
Great staff and service, room to sit inside and out
A. S.
Service from the two waitresses was exceptionally good. Don't expect avocado in the chicken, bacon and avocado salad though, you might be disappointed. Also, if the beer looks a bit short of a pint (it almost certainly will), ask for it to be topped up. You wouldn't get away with short measures in Norwich.
M. M.
Busy evening, managed to grab a few pints while we sat outside listening to musicians on the street corner. Would love to come back for dinner.
R. J.
I like this pub. Beautiful inside and quirky out. Not cheap even for London. I have never been in the evening but daytime it’s great.
l. i.
Very unique building .worth a trip
Friendly staff.
Thoroughly enjoyed fish and chips.
A. V.
Charming, atmospheric restaurant and terrace was nice to follow people and traffic! Thank you for the friendly service! 🍹
J. F.
A great stopping point on a walk around the City and on to the South Bank. Good for beer, well-served, uncrowded and socially-distanced. Stunning Art Deco interior, and good to appreciate it from close up.
K. G.
Well kept ale to accompany a traditonal pub menu.
M. G.
Beer ok food good staff rude one was embarrassing because there was a lot of tourists there
J. N.
Good beer. Traditional English pub
N. M.
Historic building great selection of beers , a must see when visiting London .
E. M. O.
Great service and food. Beautiful interior. I had the chicken and mushroom pot pie 😋 it was delicious. Friendly people.
I. M.
Another iconic pub. Service, dreadful. Left waiting 30 mins with a menu and not served. Then given wrong drink. Gave up and left (after paying). But you must visit the building.
D. G.
Nice quiant standalone Boozer.
With lots of character.
Not just for tourists.
M. S.
Nice looking pub. Pints are always poured short.
I. C.
since living in London, it's the first pub I've been to with Camden Hell's on tap, so top pub for sure
J. A.
A very interesting place to visit! I would have gone to see the carvings on the walls alone. Aside from the beauty of the place, they have a huge patio outside, plus tables inside and lots of standing room. We just popped in for a pint in the early evening but it was already quite busy and everyone seemed happy.
C. D.
Good selection of beers, friendly staff and good service.
J. S.
Good food, great beer, not crowded at lunchtime on a weekday
D. R.
Spectacular place. Good food. Brilliant staff
J. J.
Well worth a visit for the archictecture. Good selection of beers as well.
P. C.
Wonderful arts and crafts décor inside. It's worth having a drink in for that alone. Unfortunately using the Nicholson's app because of covid, which is a hassle, especially if you're wanting to buy rounds of drinks (many Nicholson's pubs take your order at the table). Usual Nicholson's range of drinks.
Y. Y.
The cheesy pulled beef on chips was great, but the cider pork pie although visually big, after breaking through the crust was very small for the price.
C.
Rating based on service, range of beers and interior. But mostly the interior. You just need to visit this place if only for a quick drink because its interior is exceptional.
G. W.
Bar is lovely with tiled interior with friar frescos on walls, worth a visit just to see the interior
p. u.
The place is right next to the blackfriars station. There is a large outdoor seating area. There is a good selection of whiskey and beer on tap. They have an offer running on bar snacks for 3 for 12. Which was great. Had a greta tine there with friends.
M. F.
A very unusual pub (unique perhaps?). A great exterior and interior.
J. K.
Busy and friendly atmosphere. Small corner pub with fascinating decor.
D. H. (.
Just called in for a coffee when walking around our old haunts near Faraday Building, afraid the coffee was very insipid, should've had a beer
O. S.
Great pub very close to Blackfriars station! I've been here several times for after work drinks. There's plenty of space outside to chat and connect with colleagues/friends. I can also recommend the food. Only reason why I give 5 stars is that the service at the bar tends to be quite slow and it is difficult to get the attention of bartenders.
A. M.
A chilled halt at Blackfriar with an open view is pretty good
Can chill outside as well as inside.
P. E.
Lovely little boozer. Friendly staff, Good service and nice atmosphere.
M. B.
Steeped in history. The surroundings alone are worth a visit.
Nice beer. Reasonable food.
Try not to sit under a spotlight with a copper table - you get blinded.
Would recommend for the ambiance alone.
P.
Pretty cool place, very crowded. The food was typical chain pub food not bad, just not great. Worth coming in for a drink.
E. D.
Beautiful pub inside and out. Covered in art nouveau wood panels. Toilets were dirty though
E.
The food is delicious, and the beer suggestion was greatly appreciated! Great atmosphere, I'm definitely glad I popped in on a whim
J. O.
Unique pub just near black friar bridge
A. A.
Awesome little gem close to St Paul's cathedral. It's pub food, but the decor in the dining area is worth it.
T. R.
Loved the atmosphere and the food. Pricy but worth it!
A. T.
A lovely old boozer with outside seating. Right opposite Blackfriars Station. The inside is amazing. Absolutely worth a visit!
B. B.
What a spot to watch the world go by. Shaymas was a nice bloke for a chat and put me right onto where to take the dog around for a walk. New to london and little bubbs is right scared around. I’ll be popping by again for another great ale.
G. H.
Absolutely amazing interior, a must see if you are in the area.
F. L.
Decor is objectively beautiful but the details ruin it and not very nice atmosphere in the end.
M. D.
Very nice pub. Great atmosphere.

Amazing experience in London. Great taps, fish is great, very interesting decor!
I. M.
Always great for a bite and a pint. It has a great history and is fascinating to see the people involved in trying to preserve this pub from demolition. Always friendly, lively, and all round great experience.
C. R.
Great pub with exceptional service
m. g.
A must visit. Cool architectural historic pub.
M. C.
Lovely pub with loads of history and a great wine list to boot.
A. P.
Great location next to the station, had some fish and chips which was a great choice.
M. R.
Great pub. Good range of beers, building is amazing. Beer is a little picey, but that's London for you
j.
Nice pub for a decent pint. Food was good. Beer was English. And prices weren't terrible all things considered. But the real reason to go is the atmosphere. Truly an interesting glimpse into the Pubs of the past
S. M.
The steak and the pie were delicious. Decor was interesting and quirky
E. J.
Cracking spot. Got the train in from Richmond to Blackfriars, I really only wanted to use the toilet but I wouldn’t never go into a pub without buying at least a half, well let me tell you I stayed for 2! The place is beautiful, it’s an ornate touch of Parisian chic in the most unexpected place imaginable. Amazing pub.
M. J.
Great beer, atmosphere, and music. Fun history with it as well. Decent prices for London. Only downfall is peeing in a trough.
R. W.
This pub has an amazing interior it really is a work of art. Plenty of tables to sit outside. They serve food too.
P. T.
Lovely pub opposite Blackfriars tube.
A. S.
Lovely staff, gorgeous interior, well worth a visit.
C. D.
Meant to put 4 but fat thumbs intervened! It's a lovely little pub and serves Timothy Taylor landlord, which is always a bonus!
V. B.
Nice and historic pub wit a great ambience, a bit crowded but I guess it was due to festive period. About that, they still had festive items on the menu but no more in the kitchen, so I couldn't get what I liked just because of a simple mistake as a not changed menu. Food was nice anyway, nothing particularly exciting.
M. M.
Historic pub that still sells a decent pint AND a bacon sandwich. A pub to be proud of.
J. A.
Come here for an amazing time. I did a pub crawl of the entire city of London... I hit maybe a total of 40 pubs in a week.... This was the best of all of them! The staff here absolutely make your experience. Every single person on their staff is amazingly nice and friendly. The bartenders are great people to have a chill conversation with. The food is excellent pub food. I highly recommend any of the pies, I would have posted a photo but I couldn't help myself from just eating it when I received it. Simply said, if you want an amazing pub experience, go here!
K. H.
Banging pub. With the greatest of Decor. Fantastic spot
M. S.
Great pub! The place inside it’s gorgeous. Staff was kind and we had a lovely time. Food was average.
L. H.
Wow! As someone who is fascinated by historic pubs and LOVES art nouveau architecture, this was a pleasure to see! I wish I could have spent the whole day there. I still feel like I would have discovered new details about the design that I hadn't seen before. Staff and patrons seemed nice. Beer selection was great. I cannot comment on the food since I didn't eat there.
N. S.
Nice pub. Full of character. Plenty of choice on tap. Good choice of food. My wife had a pie, which had a proper short crust and I had the sea fish and chips. Fish was very nice, good batter and the chips were plentiful but the mushy pea portion was disappointing. Will definitely come again though.
M. G.
Interesting looking pub but rather bland and mediocre good. Quick service.
E. S.
Nice traditional London pub with a large selection of beers. Usually stop here on the way home from work with a few friends, two or three times a week. But unfortunately, and not for the first time on our visit yesterday, I was served by an certain unfriendly female member of the bar staff. No hello, thank you or anything said apart from the total cost of the round while looking elsewhere around the pub. If one doesn't enjoy working in a pub and dealing with the general public, I suggest maybe getting a job in a factory or a warehouse, where one wouldn't need to deal with the public.
V. 2.
Pub with good selection of beer. It is close to the tube station and there is a terrace outside. After five o'clock is usually overcrowded with people from the offices around
J. S.
Amazing interior, I can definitely sense the traditional feeling of the place. Bar service was great, we had drinks and ordered bar foods so I don't have a pretty much say in it but if you want a quiet and a quirky atmosphere, I recommend this place!
G. C.
Fantastic historic pub, with a garden area and seating. Great place for a drink in The City.
M. B.
Local food at decent price. Make sure to reserve a table if you want to have lunch or dinner at busy times.
K. H.
Its your standard pub. Nothing too sketchy about the place and the drink selection was pretty standard. It wasn't too full. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Its close to the river and nice to hang out at. The staff and customers all seemed friendly enough. My only complaint would be that the inside kind of smells a bit. It may have been because we were near a vent but something definitely wreaked in there. Considerably noticeable as soon as you enter. Not a deal breaker though.
M. F.
Friendly waiters, nice outdoor terrace, good for beers and a quick bite.
D. C.
Food great, our service was spot on.
I. H.
Nice sitting outside with a cool pint, just look out for the worms coming down from the parasol's.
K. S.
Fantastic building. Inside is fascinating. Justoved it there.
R. M.
Cosy, friendly pub with a great history, unique architecture and reasonably priced drinks for a central London location! Great music played while I was there too. Toilets are downstairs though so not wheelchair friendly however. Great food options though, and a dedicated dining area.
n. w.
Service very good, beer choice great and all in an unusual setting. Food was average - not bad but not great.
L. B.
Great little pub with decent beer and good food. The interior is amazing
A.
Historical pub.
Short summary: this pub has a very unique interior, one you should see if you are trying to decide where to get a pint. It is very different from thise around it.
Not really somewhere you would get food in the evening, but definitely grab a drink.
B. C.
What a little gem of a place, beautifully decorated, tiny little pub just beside the station...we managed food without booking midweek, but I think we were lucky because of the warm weather and most people were standing outside. Staff friendly, food good, we had sausages and mash with yummy gravy... Looks as if it's really busy peak times, with the after work crowd, so plan your visit in working hours 🌼
w. t.
Nice interior n lovely food. Good for cask but not much choice in draft.
G. F.
Very old-fashioned and well preserved pub, with a sub £6 pint. Great for after work beers. Nice to look at and has a decent amount of sitting space, including some outside. Bathrooms could be a bit better looked after.
S. G.
Great historical pub! Quality beer and food. Good service and warm atmosphere. Landlord John is publican of the first order. If you only go to one pub in London this should be a consideration.
d. w.
What a vibrant Pub, atmosphere was great. Enjoyed our drinks here, The Lord Mayors Show came right past the door and there was Morris Dancing too.
Would definitely visit here again!
F. T.
Very friendly staff in an exceptional pub. Great food and a fine selection of beers. Our party of Londoners and visitors from abroad loved every moment and the kids had their own menu and colouring in to keep them occupied.
N. C.
We have had a number of opportunities to eat, or enjoy a liquid refreshment, at The Blackfriar and this place is a "One Of a Kind" atmosphere that you just have to experience. The atmosphere is unique and historic and you can just get a feel of the Old London that you can't get anywhere else. This summer we had the chance to take our granddaughter there for lunch and let her get a feel for the old age atmosphere of this pub and she was very impressed. You will never get a better fish and chips anywhere! You have to check it out!
N. W.
Nice big pub. And an extra point for the Pike mosaic over the side door!
B. W.
Tremendous interior to this pub with different ends of the bar intended for different classes of people (historically anyway!)
A. M.
Nice pub!
Good beer, good people and, the most important, it's warmer 😊😂
a. a.
Tasty pub lunsh with a great pint of their best local bitter.
L. B.
Beautiful wood carvings above the bar, decent selection of drinks. Although as a cider drinker I would have liked to see more choice here. They have an app that allows you to take them up on drink and food discounts and offers which is great. No sandwichs on Sunday which we were a bit upset about, crisps were very expensive! If they fixed the constant slamming of the door it would help the atmosphere out as well. Overall a nice old pub full of character. Bit expensive and gets very crowded during busy times.
J. M.
Nice traditional style pub well worth a visit
S. D.
Great cosy pub, its always been full of people when I've been but i like standing at the bar as I only come in for 1 or 2 drinks. I did get a seat once and it was great. Nice interior decor taking you back to the horse and carriage days with monks on the back wall. Good choice of gins and wine. Staff friendly. Food looks good but not yet eaten here as it's normally a drink before catching the train. Has nice booths at back of pub but best to book.
J. F.
Very historic pub in a great location. Can't speak to the food but the Fish and Chips looked fantastic. Very popular and good drinks and a nice variety of ales and craft beers.
L. M.
Beautiful place to visit. The food wasn't good. Terrible fish and chips.
J. L.
This was one of my dad's favourite pubs, there's a good selection on tap and the food is typical pub fair. Due to its size it doesn't take many people before it's packed, i have now introduced my son to it as well. Useless trivia : the exterior of the pub appears in Men in Black International 😁
T. D.
This pub was opened in the 1870's and is full of original features, cosy and very friendly. It's a very quaint 'flat-iron' building but is surprisingly spacious inside and is really well finished. It has beautiful mosaics above the bar and on surrounding walls and a cosy dining area.
The drinks menu is okay - what you'd expect from a Nicholson's pub - and the staff are very friendly. It's a great place to enjoy a pint.
d. m.
I was looking forward to the "Award winning steak & ale Pie" but sadly I was disappointed, too much pastry and not enough filling, A Fray Bentos would probably beat it in all departments ... It's also way overpriced for standard pub grub ... Lovely old building though ...
j. c.
Good london pub near the station
b. g.
Nice enough pub, and in the summer when you can sit outside it's great, but in the winter, indoors it's a bit tight and the whole place smells like cigarettes, including your clothes when you leave. Great Guinness either way, mind.
D.
Classic old school pub, some good IPA's and decent service.
S. P.
One of the most iconic pubs in London ..spectacular architecture and interior
M. S.
Amazing interior with unique atmosphere and great viariety of beers. I was taken there by my business partner and was so fascinated that took my friends when they came to London. I tried fish&chips and fish platter and both was very tasty and good quality.
H. M.
Gorgeous little British pub, very cosy. Friendly staff, close to the station and a nice outdoor area too. It even has a dumbwaiter! Didn't have any food but it all looked pretty tasty
I. W.
Nice bar lovely interior and the history about this bar would definitely recommend going here and good price as well.
D. C.
Had an excellent meal here, food was delicious, staff friendly and service faultless. Fantastic building full of character. Will definitely return if in the area again.
R.
Great pub in a fantastic locatiin. The interior is very unique with tiled walls showing monls and religious drawings. The building itself is quite small but has a large tabled area outside. Staff are very friendly. Always busy there after 5PM on a weekday. Not had food there but it does look very good.
D. R.
A pub I've walked past for years and never gone it until recently. The fact it's near a train station is normally enough to keep me away, but it is genuine old pub with lots of character. Indoor and outdoor seating. Nice atmosphere and a wide range of drinks. Want a pub, come here.
S. M.
Great pub with beautiful interior and good beer. Nice staff and good selection. Great history as the pub with due o be demolished in the 1960s but Sir John Betchemin saved the pub and managed to make it a listed building so it survived. Well worth a visit if you have not been before

Traditional London City pub. Good beers good prices. Fantastic art deco interior.
P. G. J.
Beautiful Arts & Crafts decoration, and very good range of beer
J. R.
Sad to see London pubs closed due to Covid. Put this on the list when the pubs open. Great art nouveau pub frequented by Sir John the poet in his day.
T. E. J.
Nice small and historic pub. Good selection of beers and wines. Food menu is also pretty good but pricey. They also have a sandwich menu worth ordering from.
Staff are friendly. One person there is always smiling.
S. T.
Great service and staff. Wonderful building too
A. A.
Very lovely staff and nice beer
M. O.
Very fast service, great staff, got a table immediately at the place also. Good beer here.
J. P.
Like walking into a piece of history. Had a ginger beer which was very good. Can vouch for the food as well.
R. B.
Seemed to be a nice comfortable Pub
R. L.
Classic old English pub with some stunning original architechture. After work it's likely to be standing room only but great because of how close it is to the tube. If you want food they do have a dedicated seating area at the back but only for those ordering food.
m. K.
From the outside, this pub looks busy and noisy, too many office goers unwinding at the end of the day. But ask for a table for dinner and it feels like an exclusive space.
The choice of gins and tonics is tremendous.
Service is excellent and prices are not too steep
I. B.
Very busy pub. A little damp outside but better for sitting and chatting. Food I saw being served looked really good.
Not a London person, but was impressed to find a proper boozer.
C. C.
An authentic, traditional & unspoilt London pub, one of the very best. Good selection of wines, lagers and spirits. Great choice of real ale. Serves food but untried, no doubts it will be good.
S. P.
Unique London pub. Well worth a visit.
D. R.
Nice pub, lots of history. Cycled passed many times but never been in. Pretty normal stock, but interesting shape and popular. There is an alcove at the back with table service and trough in the lads toilets. Classic.
R. S.
Beautiful interior, friendly staff, good, quick service, delicious food.
x. z.
Historic decoration with delicious food serving
D. M.
Love olde worlde pubs like this, fabulous!
D. H.
One of my favorite pubs in London. Worth visiting just to look at the interior.
a. s.
Fantastic service. Watch out for the manager!
D. R.
Superb art nouveau interior, good food and ale; service prompt and polite. Most definitely worth a visit.
C. L.
Wow, what a lovely quirky bar. Someone recommended it and so glad we seemed it out! We had walked right past it!! Busy so grabbing a seat is hard! But it's a lovely place and I would definitely visit again!
S. M.
One of my favourite pubs for post-work drinks with a decent ale section and nice outside area. Last night however they rang the bell at 22:30 so assuming that was an early call for the advertised 23:00 closing time I nipped in to buy a final round only to be told abruptly they were closed. I wasn't the only one looking very surprised. Why close early? There were plenty of staff on. Or if you MUST close at 22:30 ring the bell at 22:15!
M. B.
Staff was friendly and the salad I ordered was perfectly filling. I had a nice pint of lager that had hints of coffee (suggested by the staff) and definitely felt ready to head off to more tour sites after refilling at this pub. Definitely would be an excellent place to take some mates.
S. W.
One of the most most interesting and beautiful pubs, when defined by style and architecture, that I have ever been to. Loved the Art Nouveu interior and despite chain? ownership for me has retained old school smarts with class. Food solid and the tap list is a very sensible (& economically sensible) blend of accessible lager, classic cask styles and modern local craft from the likes of Sirens.
d. n.
Fantastic. Food is brilliant, staff are absolutely wonderful and friendly.
Don't let anyone tell me people in London aren't friendly because that's bs. The staff in here are lovely and friendly.
The food is fab.
You've got to have a pie. They are amazing.
It's a lovely atmosphere.
Please go here cos it's fab.
S. U.
One of our favourites. A 📸 stop. Beer good too.
P. G.
Wonderful pub and great bitter.
L. B.
Food is okay, staff was very weird - every exchange was bitterly uncomfortable. They gave us the wrong food - and luckily they changed it out for us. They seem serviceable but people skills are so-so. We would order something in plain English and they would stare at us blankly and blink. Had to repeat ourselves 2-3 times. Made me uncomfortable to say the least. However, the sticky toffee pudding is great!
S. N.
Don't just have a drink take in your surroundings absolutely beautiful
W. A.
This is where you go for the pub experience. Rich history and old school style wood interior. The bar staff, after visiting 3 times hoping they would get better, was not pleasant. Quickly forgotten once you dive into their fish & chips with a cold pint or two.
C. G.
Have visited the Blackfriar Pub several times. Classic and very historic London pub. Very good selection of cask ale and other beers. Food was good. For those traveling with kids, it is kid friendly for lunch. Would highly recommend a visit.
L. S.
I spent five days in London and this was one of my favorite pubs. It was busy from the after work crowd but service was quick and very friendly. The Tikka masala was excellent and my girlfriend had the mac and cheese which she enjoyed. There are a good variety of beers and ciders on draught. The pub is a part of the Nicholson's group but it really is a great place to go, at least from an American's perspective and the happy hour crowd. I will be back!
C. G.
If you want a relaxed place with an amazing history to grab some traditional ales, this is your place! The staff are excellent and ready to help find a new beer if you're interested. The building itself is also quite remarkable, with interior murals portraying friars going about their jobs. Definitely worth a visit if you're a local or visiting as one of the more unique pubs in London.
S. M.
Blackfriars, great ales, great decor, great location.
G. S.
For the uninitiated, Blackfriars was the site of a monastery until Henry 8 dissolved the physical, religious and financial powers of the monasteries to marry Anne Boleyn.
Prior to this ground and game changer, monks were kinda thought and money oriented. Keepers of vast libraries and stores of ale and wine....they were good at keeping themselves to themselves and at keeping records.
The freezes on the walls of this delightful spot show monks at work. The interior is a bit cramped due to its size and shape: from the outside, it is a singular looking building, standing alone as a defiant gesture against the backdrop of steel and glass. A consistent and considerable flow of trade is here.
The chips were divine, served to accompany a nice Nicholson ale. Just a lovely place....one of the rare few spots in London worth feeling a little squished for.
C. T.
Great pub, very interesting decor. Not the quietest of pubs as it's very close to Blackfriars station and you can hear the trains as they go by. It's also a popular pub.
The food is good pub food, the steak, ale and mushroom pie was delicious. As was the sticky toffee pudding.
N. B.
As one of my tour guides said one time: "This pub is a monk Disneyland"
J. G.
Manages to do a great job of combining art deco, reliefs of friars, and traditional pub decor. Also has the impressive tardis-like quality of feeling bigger on the inside. A really unusual and fascinating place! Beer selection is good, haven't tried the food.
W. H.
I would give it 4.5 stars. Unbelievable structure from inside and out. This is a MUST visit pub for anyone in town. We had beers and burgers yesterday and we scored it very high in terms of the experience. Do not expect a great service this is London after all. Just be chill and enjoy the buzz and atmosphere in that place..... WOOHOO!!!
J. S.
Great pub! Good music, fantastic food, reasonable, great service and amazing mosaics and reliefs on the walls. A few cocktails on the drinks menu would've gotten a 5th star. But for Gin, Beer, Cider & Wine lovers, this is your place.
M. V.
Super atmosphere to explore British pub traditions!
A. B.
Lovely atmosphere, great food and drink. It gets very, very busy so it's a good idea to book if you plan on eating here. You can get a table in the bar area without booking but you might have to wait.
T. F.
decent pub in historical building, right next to Blackfriars bridge. Outdoor seating, which is nice on a summer's day. Food is typical pub food, slightly more expensive than usual. Good range of ales on tap
D. D. T.
Very cosy pub, within a quirky narrow building. Good beer and cheap pub snacks.
C. P.
Lovely old traditional London pub
I. B.
Great old pub, and the staff are superb! They have social distance spot on.
The pub is so clean, you could eat your dinner of the floor!!!
S. K.
Very nice place. It is not huge place but there is always something going on =) menu is good and food is good. Also selection of beers is very good. In big picture there is nothing bad that I could say about this place.
C. U.
Really nice old fashion pub. Quite a unique building with a really cool and interesting interior. Nice outdoor area to have a drink too. Well worth a pint in if you are passing.
V. K.
Very authentic London pub. They have fish & chips too.
J. H.
This is an intriguing and beautiful arts-and-crafts pub right by Blackfriars Station. Typical pub food, very helpful and welcoming staff. Lots to look at, stained glass windows, carvings etc. Very special place.
A. H.
Great historical pub with fascinating decor, a good range of real ale, a bustling atmosphere and cheery pub food if you want it. Sure, it might be a Nicholson's, but it's distinctive and has a lot of character of its own.
The staff are engaging (and often even seem to be enjoying themselves) and the bronze murals and vaulted stonework are a reason enough to go on their own.
The crowds often spill out onto the tiny dead end street outside and the nearby paving but it's such a sheltered backwater that you forget you're only yards from a big intersection of a major road, by a significant bridge and a key station in the dead centre of London. A little island haven.
S. M.
No pub like it on earth. A rich architectural heritage. The ale is great too!
G. P.
The Blackfriar is an amazing place to drink and eat, full of history, great staff, and they have a large selection of ales, what more would you need.
N. C.
The waiters are not really nice and is expensive. But the three stars are because the food is really good
J. H.
Great pub good selection of drinks helpful staff but the toilets are miniscule
S. M.
Have been in several times and usually enjoy our visits. The bar area does ususlly have a distinct "smell" to it but tonight there were two seats spare by the door and when I sat down i realised why.. the smell! It smelt like raw sewage coming up from the basement and once my friend had finished being served we took our drinks outside. Actually made me feel sick like a major higine problem and we won't be coming back until its improved. P.s We also enjoyed watching the venue support the local wildlife as you have a friendly rat by the bins. We enjoyed watching him run backwards and forwards under the black gate making his little den. I have a video if you'd like to see.
G. P.
Top Pub in London. Lovely!
S. R.
Classic pub with amazing interior design
P. J.
Not a bad little pub, it looks really narrow if you stand across the road from it at Blackfriars station... makes a good photo. Has a good selection of ales and if the sun is shining you'll catch a few rays standing outside on the grass. There's also some seating but can get busy with people after work has finished. Good place for a quick pint near to the station.
L. C.
Classic building and very interesting interior but odd choice of overly loud music seemed at contrast with the clientele? Also, someone needs to adjust the door arm closer on the Farringdon road side before the glass breaks or the slamming door drives all the customers away.
P. B.
Make sure to call, or book way in advance, the booking on their website is not up-to-date. Was very disappointed to get refused a seat by a manager, even though I had a booking confirmation at hand. They don't handle the situation too well, the manager didn't offer any options.
Despite that, it's a normal pub with decent selection of beers and standard food in a very interesting building.
D. R.
This pub has unique art nouveau decor and is in a very handy spot opposite Blackfriars Station. It can get very busy with City workers after work time weekdays, less so weekends. There is a good range of drinks. At the back is a beautiful little room that serves as restaurant with table service
R. D.
Very quirky pub, amazing interior. Quirky service but all fine. Camden Hells on tap and a really excellent duck confit pie. Shame that they don’t do Sunday roasts (kitchen’s too small apparently) but the pie honestly made up for it. Directly across the road from Blackfriars station and tube and open on a Sunday.
N. G.
The food is GREAT. The atmosphere is GREAT. The building... fabulous. A lovely pub. Go on POETs day. Always interesting. The people working there are brilliant. Look for TK - he will brighten your day and he will tell you some interesting stories about his life. Try and guess where he's from :-)
J. P.
We loved the Blackfriar! It helped make our trip to London exactly what we were hoping for. The architecture and the Art Nouveau interior are not to be missed. We loved the selection of wines and ales. The staff could have been a bit friendlier but it was very busy and late in the evening so we understood.
J. C.
A must if you’re in the area, great boozer
A.
Worth a visit if in the area for the interesting decor. Beer selection is not bad, a few good choices available.
Music is a little too loud and doesn't really suit the setting.
It does get very busy so sitting inside can be a challenge, which clearly is the only reason to visit!
P. S.
Wonderful unusual place with its Art Nouveau style a unique and interesting place to drink Need to book to get an inside table quite small pub fills quickly
T. R.
Nice pub with great food. Really cute space.
A. G.
An old fashioned pub, beautiful on the inside served nice bar snacks and had a good selection of drinks. The only negative I cna give it is a lack of tables! This is because its small but very popular. Nothing it can do about that. I imagine in the summer would be great as there is outside seating. Defeintly stop off if you are in the area.
M. C.
This place is worth going out of your way to visit. Look up it's history. The interior is incredible. Fish and chips were tasty. Standard bar options. Outside seating if weather nice but we chose inside because it's so cool.
J. G.
If you're looking for an old-fashioned hangout to get your boozey kicks or just hang out in one of London's swankiest spots, look no further than this most rustic of taverns. It's certainly a great spot for tourists to get their fill of London life.
The dimly-lit interior and rustic architecture lend a timeless air to the place and the outside seating area, located right under a shady tree, makes it a effect spot to people watch while enjoying your food and drink.
The food itself is pretty good. They have a varied menu complete with salads and starters, main courses, burgers, sandwiches, popular British favorites like fish & chips, and even fancy desserts. You know, typical pub food.
From personal experience, I can say that the Cheese and Chutney sandwich, which comes cold, is just okay. It's a little too sweet for my liking, but not inedible. Their sweet potato fries are really good, though.
The dessert menu is modest, but has some pretty decadent desserts. I tried the Salted Caramel Profiteroles with Vanilla Ice Cream. Nothing amazing; they're just chocolatey cream puffs served with salted caramel sauce and and a scoop of ice cream.
The drink menu is extensive and this seems to be a huge local hangout, so if all you're looking for is a pint and some good conversation, surrounded by some very cool decor, this is your place.
L. W.
The best thing about this place is walking through the door. For a brief moment you feel like a stranger in the wild west walking through the doors of a saloon bar. Standard London alcohol prices. Also had a coffee here which are quite nice. Definitely a pub you must experience if you are in to that sort of thing.
J. D.
Fantastic interior but when we visited late on a Saturday evening there were numerous rats running around amongst the rubbish piled up outside. The staff didn't seem bothered. Enjoyed the music being played.
В. М.
One of The Pubs in London! Even if you set aside the truly unique interior (you really shouldn't! this place is worth a visit only because of that!) and hisotry of the place - you still get to get a decent selection of ales and spirits along with Very Friendly Staff! To-morrow is friday ;)
S. G.
Great pub - good beers (and good range of wines and spirits) and good atmosphere. Feels authentic rather than touristy.
Bar even had hooks for coats so Donnie will be happy!
J. A.
Came here for a beer and some lunch one sunny afternoon. The pub itself is lovely, there is a nice sized outdoor area which is quite a rarity in this part of London, and the decor inside is stunning with mosaics and other grandiose artefacts covering the walls and the ceilings. The only Gripe I have with this pub and it's a gripe with a capital G, is the food. We were waiting over an hour for our order, even after being reassured on several occasions that the food was coming. The manager was apologetic and explained that there was a communication problem between the bar and the kitchen, this would have been acceptable if the food was good, which unfortunately it wasn't. The breaded Brie looked as though it had been cooked for about 10 seconds and was cold, the scampi was over cooked and the chips were greasy. I would recommend this pub for the decent beer, good location and beautiful building.
K. P.
Beautiful building, nice seasonal draft selection and decent food.
J. C.
Very nice historic pub, and great selection of spirits and ales. The bartender is keen on educating the masses on the virtues of courtesy, repeating “Please” until I learnt to say it myself. Terrified that my beer may be confiscated if I wasn’t polite enough, I thanked her/him profusely only to find her/him wearing the exact same expression my teacher had when I failed grade 5. I dashed towards the courtyard, narrowly missing the remedial classes on saying “Thank You”.

Lovely selection of beers and real ales, and very decent home-cooked English pub food. The decor is what you come for though - this is a beautiful 100-year-old pub built on the side of a 13th-century Dominican Friary. Pretty unique - well-worth a visit if you're anywhere in central London.

Excellent character pub wth great staff and quality real ale selection. We had a good meal but at least double the price of Wetherspoons food and about the same quality. Sausages were rubbery. I had to ask for more chips as there were only a few with the fish and chips at 15.95(see picture)

Directly opposite Blackfriars Station, this pub was saved from demolition (thankfully) by being awarded Grade II listed status. This in itself gives it real charm as everywhere surrounding it has been redeveloped. The charming frescos depict the former medieval Dominican friary upon which it was built.
Popular with tourists, locals and office workers, it gets very busy, although its location offers an outside area for warm weather drinking.
Great selection of beers and traditional pub food. Staff are pretty friendly but could be a bit more attentive in terms of clearing away food plates and cleaning sticky surfaces. Given that it gets so busy, however, I understand the difficulty in “keeping so many plates spinning”.

A must see pub in London. Amazing art nouveau decor. Lively, with a comprehensive menu. Or you can just stand with a drink and admire the interior and soak in the atmosphere.

Fast, Nicholson's food and beverages. Staff was beyond friendly. Location is great - next to a tube station and a short walk to lots to see like the Shard and Shakespeare's Globe theatre.

Truly wanted to give a higher score but after witnessing a drunken brawl on our first visit and my partner having his wallet stolen on our second visit it's difficult. "The camera wasn't looking in that direction" was the response when we asked staff to check cctv. Beer nice. Staff need a bit more education in allergy awareness. A shrug combined with "it all comes in boxes" is appalling. Having said that the food was OK. My advice would be to work on your customer service skills.

We halted our walking tour to pop in for a pint or two. Glad we did. This place oozes history from every nook and cranny. It helped that our host knew much about it. Definitely worth a visit.

Lovely old pub with amazing wall decorations

Nice architecture and design. Standard food. Good service.

Odd place for beer lovers. First the good: excellent beer (if you get it) and a perfect historic interior. The normative: the staff are brusque but busy. I can't fault their work ethic but there's always room for improvement. Now the bad: their main issue is with expectations of their punters. When there is an issue it is poorly dealt with - case in point: I do a lot of tastings for CAMRA and end up drinking beers that I don't know and don't even know the colour or type of. I do this to find new beers and try new things. Recently I was given a beer that was clearly not right as it was fizzy; I didn't even taste it and it was ordered by my manager so I didn't interact with the server. When I took it back because it was clearly wrong I was questioned about how it had got so far from the bar without being caught as wrong. The expectation being that my boss, who's not as discerning as I am should have picked up that it wasn't the right beer given that he didn't really know anything other than the name and that even I didn't know that the the right one was a dark beer given that I bought it because it was new to me. My problem is not that it was wrong; mistakes happen, but that I was questioned for so long over a clear mistake. Admitting that three people make more mistakes than one needs to be a part of Nicholson's training it seems.

Popped in for a quick drink when passing as it looked like a quirky place from the outside and the inside didn't dissapoint. Seems like a popular place and luckily we got a table. Drinks were reasonably priced and the food looked good. Would go back!

Food: A good ol' Nicholsons pub so expect the standard cheerful pies and fish and chips. One of my friends asked for the steak and it was cooked perfectly. The beer selection is excellent and has its own menu!
Service: The service was a little slow, but there was only one person manning the dining area and they were very busy. When present, the waitress was very friendly.
Ambience: The clientelle are the usual city workers and tourists that you'd expect, but the interior of the pub is just fantastic! The photos just don't do it justice.
Price: Nicholsons is always a reasonably priced affair.
Worth a visit: Definitely if not just for the decor.

One of my after work local places. Right next to Blackfriars station. Centuries old, historical pub that gets properly packed out after work, especially Thursday, Fridays and sunny days. Cozy inside and it's got a huge open beer garden out front which everyone spills out onto. Serves European and london ales and lagers. It has a decent wine bar next door as well.

A fantastic and fascinating pub with interesting architectural design features inside and out along with a good beer and food selection. Having been built on the site of an old Dominican Friary the grade 2 listed building features jolly friars depicted throughout the interior of the pub in the form of reliefs sculptures and mosaics. If you are after a more curious venue to impress a London visitor this could well be the place.

Great atmosphere and pub grub.

Mmm beer. Happy to have found this classic bar!

You must visit this pub it is amazing. I can't describe the way it takes your breath away upon entry. The place was full it was marathon day so service wasn't great but this is history living and breathing. I really can't describe why you need to go here3

A lovely pub for a few pints, it has a very interesting and historic interior and a great location by the river. It can be quite hard to get a seat inside however if the weather is nice there's outdoor seating available.

One of the best pubs in London, a must to visit 🍻🍻
T. S.
Fortunately one of the few Great Pubs that Nicholsons has not been able to de-value with banal, MOR piped music, MOR food and anything but MOR prices.....thankfully due to its position, timeless and wonderful building and an outside seating area it is well worth paying for. And to be fair to Nicholsons there is a good selection of very good beer.

Very pretty exterior. This was on the site where the Queen of England Katherine of Arogon met at court and delivered her famous speech. That was my draw unfortunately you would think the employees would have had a bit of history to share with customers. Other than that it's just a pub....

Magnificent and unique pub on the north side of Blackfriars Bridge. Decorative Art Nouveau outer, inner features wood panelling denoting scenes of working monks from the former nearby friary. Part of the quality Nicholson pub chain, it offers a fine range of beers & decent grub. Visited Sunday afternoon when they were severely short staffed, otherwise this is an essential target for everyone with even the remotest interest in pub culture.

I've always loved this place. There's a nice after work buzz here, excellent beers and friendly, efficient staff. If you're waiting for friends to join you then there are always the art nouveau carvings around the walls to admire. Friars and their work reflect the history of Blackfriars with a tube station case by.
A London classic. Long may it continue.

Beautiful pub full of history

This beautiful old pub was very full when I arrived at 5.00 on Friday evening, having arranged to meet a friend there. The waitress/bar assistant, Paula, was extremely helpful in finding me a table while I waited, and when after about 15 minutes I had a problem using my mobile to contact my friend, Paula lent me hers, which enabled me to speak to my friend and discover she was waiting for me elsewhere. After my phone call she arrived, so we had drinks and a snack before going on to our meeting. Although it was noisy (which was why I knocked off the fifth star) we were so grateful to Paula for helping us to contact each other, and would definitely recommend The Blackfriar for friendliness and helpfulness. The drinks and food were great too!

Nice pub with a good selection of different beers and spirits as well as food. Good for a quick stop off if you are out exploring for the day, we happened to stumble across it before going back down into the Underground.
S. T.
Everything you want from a traditional English pub - wooden panelling and medieval reliefs on the interior give great atmosphere, handpulled ales and more contemporary beers on tap and hearty food with quick service. Recommend the beef pie.

Where: Blackfriars pub
What: A traditional english pub
How was it: It was great, the food, ambiance and drinks. We were ideally setting out for the Punch Tavern that was recommended in our tour book and quite frankly forget why we didn't go there. This pub would appear to be very similar in style. Needless to say, we didn't regret our experience there.
It was our first time having a green salad with gravy on top as the dressing. But when in Rome do like the Romans :-)
Grade: Eli = 5, Serge = 5
Recommend: Yeah, great food and ambiance. Worth going

You can try the best pub pies in London here. The Chicken and mushroom pie is my favourite and I really love it. The drinks selection is also good and more importantly, reasonably priced. Go there and enjoy.
M. E.
Lovely find on our walk, sat out side very nice staff.

Considering this is a Nicholson pub, the range of beers is pretty extensive. Nice to see a few different ale offerings on cask. Food looked pretty average but only popped in here for a pint after work.
T. C.
Decent pub, nice area outside, small and compact bar area makes getting served quite a task. Beer selection ok, would I go back probably not plenty of better pubs nearby.
T. K. A. C.
This is a great pub. Google maps marks it as a "Unique Art Nouveau Pub" That never occurred to me. For me it is a hugely interesting curiously decorated wonderful old pub serving a good range of beers.

Very nice pub with a very interesting decoration. Perfect to have lunch before taking the train to Luton or Gatwick in Blackfriars station.

I was there in 2017 , i have spent a good moment after having a entire day walking in London , a friend and I appreciated one ( or two ) beer and fish and ships , delicious :D

Great service, lovely staff, super drinks and bar snacks in an interesting location

Excellent beer, good food to be a British pub, interesting history, beautiful building and interiors, very gentle staff.
S. N.
Definitely interesting pub. Friendly staff and unique decor. We did not have food here so I cannot comment.

Worth visiting historical pub. Very kind and efficient waiter/waitress. Nice atmosphere, food and ales. Really special! Booking suggested

Perfectly good place to enjoy a drink when in London, all was fine for us. Seems to attract tour groups to look at the decor etc, so was very busy on our visit.

Gorgeous pub with carved wooden features inside.
Friendly staff, and a little less crowded than the pubs on the S Bank.
A gem.
One of the few places open on a weekend in this area.
S. A.
One of the coolest looking pubs with the art reliefs around the walls - and the looks don't disappoint as they've got a nice beer selection and some good food too. The wild boar and chorizo burger is particularly nice

A great pub with great cider and friendly staff

Lost booking.
This is a great pub in many ways. In particular there is a lovely dining room in the back ... which we booked for a Sunday lunch with a group of friends. They lost the booking and sat us in a draughty corner without enough seats, but then moved us into the back dining room so all was well. I'm rather fond of the Nicholsons ale on tap. The food is good pub fare.
P.
Quirky pub that is wedge shaped
Quite small,
Bar staff are polite but don't keep track of who's next.
You can drink outside in the street area which has tables under trees so it can be shadey.
This full is full of history and a must if you like something a bit different
P. N.
Standard (in a good way) pub food. Nice atmosphere. Staff was friendly. Definitely an option for a stopover and a cold beer. (Or two) ;)

Wonderful drinks and food, great crowd

This pub has beautiful historical ornate interior, the experience is dampened slightly by limited beer selection and a lack of cosy friendly pub vibe. ....Maybe some candles?
D. B.
It’s 5-star boozer, history plus basic selection. It won’t wow you but it won’t disappoint
K. T.
Amazing stone and metal work interior.
1st visit: Good beer.
2nd visit: Delicious fish & chips. Nice beer selection. Minimize your trips to the men's room, it's pretty gross.
3rd visit: Good bangers and mash.
K. J.
Cosy little pub with indoors and outdoors seating areas. It offers your usual imported beers on tap with a few local brews. It’s a sweet spot to stop for a pint and a snack when you’re enjoying your walk by The Thames.
L. W.
Fabulous ornate decor, well worth visiting if only to look at the interior. Visited with friends on a Sunday lunchtime. A busy pub with good beer and standard pub food menu.
K. E.
A stunning Nicholsons pub saved from demolition by john betijaman. The inside has loads of marble clad walls and statues, it's almost like a mausoleum (but in a good way) sadly the prettiest bit is now for dining only so if you're not eating just pop your head in for a look. Getting increasingly popular and usually understaffed so be prepared to be patient. Food is pricy but usually good. Drinks about right for the city (around £5 A pint)
T. E.
Historic and very novel classic pub. Sound menu as always usual in Nicholson's pubs. Good selection of ales. Handy location for Blackfriars.
b. g.
Nice enough pub, and in the summer when you can sit outside it's great, but in the winter, indoors it's a bit tight and the whole place smells like cigarettes, including your clothes when you leave. Great Guinness either way, mind.
T. L.
Decent pint

Very friendly staff in an exceptional pub. Great food and a fine selection of beers. Our party of Londoners and visitors from abroad loved every moment and the kids had their own menu and colouring in to keep them occupied.

One of my favourite pubs for post-work drinks with a decent ale section and nice outside area. Last night however they rang the bell at 22:30 so assuming that was an early call for the advertised 23:00 closing time I nipped in to buy a …

Great spot. Very easy to order in the 'new normal '
R. M.
Cosy, friendly pub with a great history, unique architecture and reasonably priced drinks for a central London location! Great music played while I was there too. Toilets are downstairs though so not wheelchair friendly however. Great food options though, and a dedicated dining area.
S. W.
One of the most most interesting and beautiful pubs, when defined by style and architecture, that I have ever been to. Loved the Art Nouveu interior and despite chain? ownership for me has retained old school smarts with class. Food solid …

An authentic, traditional & unspoilt London pub, one of the very best. Good selection of wines, lagers and spirits. Great choice of real ale. Serves food but untried, no doubts it will be good.
T. G.
A beautiful pub with a very distinct style. Good selection of cask ales and others to choose from. Great place to grab a pint.
