Reviews of The Boleyn Tavern
L. M.
First time visiting the pub for a Sunday roast. Service was outstanding! Everyone is so welcoming, food was out of this world. lovely selection of wines and beers! Pub is beautifully kept. Feel so lucky for this pub to be my new local!
M. J.
Amazed at how well this placed has been restored. It is now a nicer pub than it ever was before. Nice choice of bears, comfortable seats, all the wooden bar areas are beautiful. The food area is classy, there are great photos on the wall and a quirky/interesting (free) jukebox. We only had a buffet due to the time we arrived, but it was great enough to make me want to go back and have a proper meal. I will be returning...
I returned for Sunday Lunch and I was not disappointed. I had a glorious pork belly served with a huge Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, red cabbage, carrots and cabbage. All delicious. This really is high end stuff, not cheap, but definitely with it.
L. F.
Finally Upton Park has a lovely place where to eat and drink. The food is gorgeous, the newly refurbished pub is fresh, is clean, is something that was really missing before in the area!
I definitely recommend a lunch or a dinner in the billiard room, with the astonishing skylight, a delight for the eyes and taste buds.
The staff is friendly and welcoming.
5 well deserved stars

We went to this pub when it first opened a few months ago, went back today again for a Sunday roast and I can only say they've gotten even better. Delicious food (that gravy and those Yorkshire Puddings! Plus really amazing perfectly cooked veggies) and great atmosphere. Special mention to Mark - great barman, extra friendly, helping to clear tables, fantastic service all round. This pub is a delight and just what is needed in this area!
R. C.
We came here the day after they re-opened having had a £1.5 million refurbishment. The interior is fantastic, offering a pleasant atmosphere with tons of late Victorian/Edwardian East End character. We ate a meal in the Billiards Hall which boasts a stunning stained glass roof and wonderful table booths. Whilst the menu could offer more variety, the food was decent but in need of a little fine-tuning. I think they will get this with more feedback and practice. Drinks were lovely though and perhaps a little more expensive than other local pubs but it's obvious, they are keen on a more affluent clientele here which is understandable. I would highly recommend coming here for the experience. Staff were attentive and friendly. We're going back for Sunday dinner!
Edit: Since my initial review, we have visited several times seeing as this is our local. I just wanted to add (including the photos) the Sunday roasts are to die for. Really worth coming here just for those. No, seriously!
D. M.
Best roast of 2022 without a shadow of a doubt, chef delivered to the highest of standards. Special mention to the honey glazed pigs in blankets 😍 Bloody Mary’s were delightful too - excellent Sunday
B. H.
A fantastic place for food and drink. A great beer list, delicious snack food and a superb Sunday roast. The restoration and decor are simply stunning.
D. K.
Refurbished long standing local pub with a good selection of drinks on tap. Nicely done up recently with new seats and tables but with a classic feel to the decor. Friendly welcoming staff. Food menu is quite limited and could do with some expanding, this would do more justice to the lavish dining area.
K. A.
This place is a gem! Gorgeous interiors and the beer selection is great. Definitely go for the Sunday roast and chocolate stout cake. The yorkies are the size of your face!
I. T.
Great space with beautiful restored architecture. The old wood and frosted glass makes you feel like you've stepped through time a bit.
Service is steadily improving as they find their feet, and the food is pretty good. The Sunday roast is great value!
K. G.
Lovely bar great Ale to drink friendly and welcoming staff with. Food was to die for. Definitely recommend this pub
F. S.
I had such a great time here last night. The pub has been refurbished to its original victorian furnishings and has a fantastic atmosphere. There was a wide selection of lagers and the food looked really good.
J. D.
Had a wonderful Sunday lunch. Staff very attentive. Great to see the Boleyn reignited after loss of football ground. Looked after me and mum (Wheely walker and oxygen) so well. Definitely coming back thanks for a great experience and nice to know someone does Sunday lunch.
D. L.
Great refurbishment. Looks lovely.
Early teething problems with in-experienced staff and lack of training. Would be nice to see local brewery's included. Food fine but not fantastic.
Will go again for drinks.
S. S.
A really good pub! We went in yesterday for some dinner and we had one of the most delicious fish and chips! The fish was so soft it was melting. Service was excellent too and the atmosphere was great. We will be back for some more food and drinks!
R. S.
An oasis in East London. The place looks stunning after major refurbishment. Staff are falling over themselves to be helpful and the food and beer selection is great. There are very few pubs of this calibre left in this part of town, not to be missed..
M. P.
A very popular pub/ restaurant , was I understand the place die hard Hammers supporters gathered before games at Upton Park .
Now completely refurbished. I went for Sunday roast, and was not disappointed with my poussin and all the traditional trimmings.
Plenty of old West Ham Utd photos on display.
I would have no hesitation in visiting again if in the area.
L. Y.
Love this place. If you want a pint, this is by far the best place in the area to get one! The beers are delicious. And the food, even better... Had the Sunday roast which was one of the best I've ever had in a pub, was deliciousssss. Will be back. Lots.
N. R.
The roast dinner here is amazing, great drink selections as well. Staff here are very friendly and attentive whilst busy. Has been recently done up and looks fantastic, they've kept a lot of the old West ham elements here at the same time, brought back a lot of its original features. Absolute gem of a place
B. P.
My favourite pub when West Ham United football club home ground games were played. Sadly the football stands are gone. Miss the atmosphere but great pub of the a east End! 👍😂😱
A. D.
The refurb is out of this world. Staff as friendly as ever and great food + beer on offer. So glad to see it restored to what it should be. ⚒️
L. G.
Brilliant pub - the staff are fantastic and the pub itself is beautiful. Went on Sunday for a roast dinner - it was packed and the staff were really busy but they were super attentive, couldn't do more to help us, and the food was delicious. Love it here!
S. K.
Fantastic renovation of a classic pub.
Any old Irons would be delighted with how this pub now looks
L. B.
Love how they refurbished this pub! It s a great bar with now great service. It took a bit of time for them to find their pace when they opened but the team now is great. A bit pricey for the area, specially on the food with small portions on some veggie food (quiche, curry), hence why 4stars.
S. K.
There's a reason I not only keep going back here, but keep taking different friends. The roast is cracking, the beer selection is great, and the folk working here are absolutely lovely, as well as occasionally amusingly cheeky! Can't recommend this place enough!
s. M.
This was my local in my student days (33 years ago) and it was an architectural jem then but with uninspiring beer. I'm glad to say it still an architectural jem with good beer. Being a stones throw from the former Upton Park stadium there was concern that this place would close when West Ham moved to Stafford fortunately this hasn't happened.
N. P.
How they've transformed this pub. 😍 It's really something special. Went there for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago. They are dog friendly which was perfect for us because we could stay longer. Food is nice - we had roast dinners and the portions were generous. The only thing I would say to improve the Sunday roast is to add more green veg. Service was good. Looking forward to visiting again.
K.
Wonderful staff, great beer & spirit selection . The pub looks incredible, the Remarkable pub group have done an amazing job. We travelled from throughout East London to go back to the Boleyn, and it was well worth the visit. Even with it being a quiet Tuesday, we had a amazing time. 10/10 would recommend!
D. F.
Absolutely first class restoration of a magnificent Victorian pub. Beer good, food good. They deserve your support.
A. I.
This place is very welcoming, great with kids, and the food was excellent. We will return for sure. Also the venue is amazing a little piece of restored history in the East End. Definitely worth a visit!
S. M.
Visited this pub recently and were not disappointed. The interior has had a very sympathetic refurbishment and is absolutely stunning! Good choice of food on the menu. We ate a couple of times including Sunday lunch which was gorgeous, especially the mushroom Wellington! Staff were all lovely and very friendly. Great choice of real ales. Would definitely recommend a visit.
C. P.
Beautifully restored pub, with breathtaking interiors - really friendly staff and lots of seating options. So many lovely restoration touches to look up and see including the wonderful ceiling in the dining hall. It’s also really dog friendly, they’re allowed everywhere including in the dining hall. We’ll definitely be coming back, pup in tow!
T. H.
Looks great now it's been refurbed. I had the fish and chips and it was really fresh and tasty
L. N.
Absolutely wonderful! My husband, John had his first pint in here, at 15 years old. He is now 76 and loved the fact that it hadn't changed. Wonderful memories!
PS. First pint: 2 shilling. Now a pint of Guiness: £4.90. 😉
J. E.
Fabulous building. Very efficient and friendly staff. Some rather noisy, drunk people there though even though it was only 18.30. For hot and reasonable. I would go back if in the area again.
V. T.
Beautiful restored pub. Great service. Comfy seating. Great range of drinks and quality food.
N. R.
Went for drink. Wine was OK. 3 stars for the interior. I have not eaten here yet. But I will definitely try it.
B. W.
Both an old and new customer.
Love both versions of the pub.
Took the recommendation for the fish and chips and didn't regret it. Batter was light fluffy and not greasy, the fish melted in the mouth.
An excellent pub, just maybe a little early to the area.
J. G.
Amazing food, great variety of drinks, beautiful interior and very friendly staff. The roast is great!
L. G. S.
Very friendly service, great beers and good recommendations from the staff. The food is tasty and fresh. I would definitely recommend. There is usually always seating available and the interior looks fabulous with its new restoration.
A. S.
The Boleyn has been tastefully refurbished in recent years, without losing its character. Still quite well supported despite West Ham football club moving away from the area. Decent choice of real ales.
A. T.
Great local pub, newly refurbished. The Sunday roast is great, although RIP the cauliflower cheese!!!
B. M.
Stunning and unique decor, great range of beers and v good food. Staff are also really friendly. For groups of less 5 I would suggest booking in the booths. 5*
L. A.
Great pub, a true local gem. Food is fantastic too and always great atmosphere.
A. W.
beautifully restored. Lovey staff. Great selection of drinks. Lots of little nooks and saloons to hang out in. A hidden gem!
J. L.
Half way through a mega walk from Leyton and returned via Eagle lake, Wanstead on the day the Tube was on strike, the guys are always welcoming in the BT
L. P.
Excellent pub. Amazing roast dinners. Can not recommend enough. The attention to detail in the recent refurbishment is incredible
G. O. (.
Elite Sunday Roast. Friendly staff and nostalgic atmosphere.
C.
Very friendly pub great staff
Wonderful food.
M. S.
A great evening spent in beautiful surroundings. Restored to its fullest glory the Boleyn has never looked so good since being first built. A good size portion of tasty well presented fish and chips. Freshly cooked in open style kitchen by a friendly chief. The table service was excellent the team here are young and vibrant. They are a credit to the group. This will be our first of many visits. We look forward to returning and trying out some more tasty treats from the menus. Food and drink.
A. T.
Excellent pub, so pleased to see it open again, the staff are lovely and friendly, there's really interesting history dotted around the place which is defo worth a read and defo worth a visit
L. M.
Great space, good selection of beers, but there isn't much choice on the food menu
B. C.
Genuinely one of the best pubs in all of London and I'm from the North so I know good pubs ;)
D. S.
Beutiful restoration very friendly staff perfect place for part , Sunday roast or just quick drink with friends , love the diferent privacy zones❣
S. P.
After the refurbishment this pub transformed into a beautiful place with great food, decent selection of drinks and very friendly atmosphere. Interior is stunning, food is a classic pub selection but very well executed (please try the cheeseburger; tastes like shakeshack but bigger and better). Also, it’s dog friendly. I’ll come back here every other week for sure.
D. W.
Visited this place again recently after its million pound transformation - WOW!
The beer is awesome, the service friendly, it's totally unrecognisable from the, er, ran down establishment it used to be.
C. B.
Simple menu, traditional pub, great beers and ciders. Lovely jubbly.
Y. O.
My local pub that's probably one of the only business that's been there for as long as I've lived in the area. Under new management and refurbished. Good food and drink options without the really sticky floor. Only thing is they don't currently have TVs but I've been told that will change.
Z. H.
Very attentive staff, some confusion over drinks eg ordering a pint of shandy and getting a half of larger, no veg left for the roast at 5pm on a Sunday or any dessert left.
But they gave us some cauliflower cheese to make up for lack of veg and the drinks were swapped for correct ones quickly and easily. Will definitely go back once they've got over teething problems of new staff and reopening as I enjoyed it!
M. K.
Our local, fantastic service, the roast is to die for and it's sooooo beautiful in there. Very lucky we have this so close!
D. B.
Friendly staff, amazing decor, one of the best roasts I've ever had!
E. S.
A beautifully restored pub of some renown. A must visit for any self respecting West Ham United supporter.
J. H.
First time at The Boleyn, great pub, lovely staff, it is like a little maze
A. H.
Beautiful victorian restoration. Great selection of beers and other drinks and good food. Fantastic to see this amazing pub still going after West Ham moved to Stratford.
s. e.
changed redesigned and well arranged with an added restaurant
very nice and had an enjoyable time visiting and will revisit soon
D.
First visit since the refurb. First the good point's. The pub looks absolutely brilliant, a real talking point. The staff are friendly and always available, the pub had a good atmosphere and the beer was a good pint. Now the bad point's. The food is astronomically over priced. I'm the type who doesn't mind paying for a good quality meal but £4.50 for 4 to 5 very small slices of cured meat served in a dish you can fit in the palm of your hand and £13.50 for a small fried fish and about 8 chips and a small pot of mushy peas although very nice was the smallest portion I have ever been sold in a pub. In conclusion, would I visit again. For a drink absolutely, for food, absolutely not. Especially when there are two good fish and chip shops 2 mins walk away at half the price.
K. U.
Warm and friendly welcome and a great Sunday Roast, will definitely be back next time we are in the area. Kim & Lee
R. L.
Beautifully restored traditional pub. We had a lovely visit. The staff tried their best to look after us, as they seemed new to hospitality. Thank you guys.
M. E.
Beautiful interior, large selection of spirits, pleasant staff, clean toilets and no spittoon.
J. B.
Really enjoyable time at the Boleyn.
Sunday lunch was very good as was the cider.
Refurbished well, without losing the old fashioned feel.
B. B.
Magnificent refurbishment. Breathtaking. Great range of beers, and nice interesting dishes from feature open kitchen.

P. K.
Great food, Friendly service!!
Looks stunning
C. S.
Amazing atmosphere in here pre-West Ham
Home matches. Hopefully this place will still be frequented when the club move to Stratford in the summer. From the chanting of "Bubbles", "We've got Payet" and "Irons" to kicking a small football around in the back room, it all made for an amazing atmosphere. Only took about 10 mins at most each time to get a pint too.
N. M.
First time back since west ham moved stadiums, atmosphere has changed but still a very nice pub for a few pints
j.
Great pub with original Victorian features. Regrettably, the pub is closing it's doors on 27th May for the last time. RIP to a great place.

One of the last remaining pubs in Newham, it has an underground secret tunnel connecting the Boleyn pub and the now closed Spotted Dog pub that used to be on the bend of Upton Lane E.7 that King Henry the eighth had used.

Loving the atmosphere here after the refurb. What an impressive pub! Spacious & with gorgeous decor. Excellent selection of beers, ales & stouts, including Belgian Duvel on draft. Awesome chips! Wish they had more vegan options on the menu. Friendly & helpful bar staff.
s. k.
Always our go to, great bar staff, food and best Sunday roast I've had in a while bring on the bumbu 👍
A. S.
Nice pub
C. P.
Absolutely love our local, but really miss their old menu. Wish they’d bring back their old starters as the new menu is too much like the Holly Tree, which is very unfortunate and now we never go during the week for dinner or starters. (Translated) Authentic pub, all a bit old and broken, but that's why it's beautiful. Only locals, all incredibly nice, even if they look grim. Pint under 4 pounds. What more do you want?
(Original)
Authentischer Pub, alles etwas alt und abgewrackt, aber gerade deswegen schön. Nur Locals, alle unfassbar nett, auch wenn sie grimmig gucken. Pint unter 4 Pfund. Was will man mehr?

(Translated) I can only recommend the place for the more people to visit here. Since joining the West Ham United team in the new stadium, it also sees the atmosphere of the neighborhood and the surrounding area! But here is a good beer for a good family atmosphere.
(Original)
