Reviews of The Boot & Flogger
I. M.
We went here last night and had a wonderful time!
It's historic; even though this Davy's has been here just over 50 years there's been a food/tavern/inn type of establishment on the sight for almost a thousand years.
The interior is really special; looks like it's not been updated since it began, so very authentic, and is extremely clean and cheerful throughout. There are lots of nooks and crannies and private rooms too. Very atmospheric, I was almost expecting Dickens or Dr Johnson and Boswell to arrive.
Our waiter for the evening was perfect! Charming, knowledgeable, helpful and fast - he's worth the visit alone.
The wines, as you'd expect at Davy's, were delicious and came in a wide price range, so nothing too scary.
While the food was standard fish and chips, bangers and mash etc, it was all delicious and fairly priced.
Well done Davy's - we can't wait to go back.

I absolutely love this place. The food is fantastic and the service so warm. Great selection of wines.
S. W.
The Boot & Flogger had the best food, best service (Francesco is AWESOME!!) best ambiance, and amazing wines. Can't say enough great things about the place or staff. We found ourselves there again and again. Would've given 10 stars if possible!
S. E.
TLDR: Sexy, London-old-skool, upper cut establishment where those in the know meet to talk at length over excellently selected wines and quail eggs 🍷🥀
I don't often give five stars... but this place is incredible. Excellent and attentive service... incredible wine selection... quiet, unknown, beautiful, class, quality, clean, comfortable and romantic... I just love this place. It's everything you want an old school London wine den to be without any pretentiousness. I'm a fan. The seafood was incredible. Everything I've ever eaten from here has been top class and quality. It's a date place. Huge outdoor/smoking area also. It looks like it's closed... its open. It's awesome.
A. H.
Nice little old, historic pub! More suited to diners nowadays though! Bottle beer only! Those that like a pint should probably avoid!

Davy's wine bars are such an overlooked option for cool little places to go in London, any day or night of the week. The more I discover about them and the more of them I visit, the more I want to see the rest. This was number four (I think), so I'm please I've got a long way to go yet!
This visit to the Boot & Flogger a couple of weeks ago was just another great example of why more people need to go to their nearest Davy's bar. The "Boot & Flogger", which I believe is their oldest and first in the collection, is a fantastic place near London Bridge. I'd say "little place", as it seems rather small and cosy at first glance. After I was given a tour however, I learned that it's not very little at all! With its myriad of hidden corridors, doors and staircases leading to different rooms and private spaces, this place almost feels like you could go back in time to before London was overcome with coffee shops and craft beer!! (Not that I dislike these things...!)
Being a wine bar, these places naturally have fantastic wine lists. On this occasion though, we took our own wines, and enjoyed some very special and cracking wines. I did taste a rather unusual beer though, the "Curious Session IPA".
For food, we had the salmon and mac and cheese to start. Both were superb, and just what was needed to kick off the weekend. The mains were fantastic too - we had a steak and the special, which just happened to be one of my favourite meals: good old fish and chips!
The staff in every Davy's bar are fun, friendly and incredibly helpful, not to mention how clued up they are on their wine knowledge. Getting one of your bottles decanted here is never any problem at all, which makes a welcome change from a lot of places.
Fantastic evening all told, and I'm just looking forward to the next evening of discovering a new Davy's bar!
G. S.
Great staff and a wonderful historic pub. But the quality of the food doesn’t quite live up to the price.
I would recommend you go, but it’s quite pricey.
G. L.
Enjoyed good food and had excellent service.
Pity they don't serve Davey's Old Wallop draught beer though
M. M.
Beautiful bar and fantastic wine. Highly recommend!
R. K.
ok. not the best place to eat. The steak was average, choco dessert awesome. But the starter, OMG, keep away.
F. L.
Loved the vibe and decor the moment I walked in. Good wine list and reasonably priced. Lovely staff and food.
D. L.
I picked the place based on the name and loved it. Amazing decor, very quiet and peaceful. Food was delicious. Staff was extremely nice and helpful but it was a little busy with some large parties so they seemed a little under staffed for the day but otherwise I very very much recommend this place.
K. D.
Great trad British food in an authentic setting. Love this place!
B. G.
Good food and good atmosphere, we booked at this restaurant for 11 Persons visiting us from abroad , we stay at the private rooms and have the best time for lunch, highly recommended
C. H.
Excellent olde London wine bar and restaurant hidden away off Southwark St. Great selection of wines, and while the food is simple it's very tasty, and service is first class.
M. P.
So, we haven't been since before Covid and it's a favourite. Back in London, so first choice for dinner and they are doing a reduced menu which is fine for meat eaters. I hadn't checked and their glorious Mac n cheese is not in the menu. So, if I had any magic powers I'd ask them to swap out the soup starter for the Mac n cheese. That said, everything else that B&F do well, they still do beautifully.
G. R.
It is over fifteen years since my first visit and I have enjoyed every visit.
The chairs are comfortable and the service always friendly. This branch of Davy's is a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of London Bridge.
During the week it is a good idea to book a table as it can be very busy, but never crowded. I am sure that, as other reviewers note, there are other bars with more extensive menus and wine lists but there is nowhere near that has the calm, friendly atmosphere. This is the perfect place for comfort food and relaxed conversation with wine. There is a lovely private room for dinners and a large back room and courtyard for parties too.
C. A.
Lovely wine bar with good food and oldie wordly atmosphere. With a view of the Shard from the window.
C. J.
Lovely for a nice evening. Also a good place to chill with friends
W. W.
Good service, good surroundings and great nibbles. Add wine and friends and its a great place to meet.
V. L.
Delightful establishment in the finest tradition of the Davy's mould. A great selection of wines. Simple, hearty comfort food (I had the gammon and my companions the sausage and mash).
The venue is intimate, comfy and service is discreet and efficient. Highly recommended.
J. L.
Great meal, great venue for a special celebration.
P. N.
Lovely place. Amazing wine selection. Friendly staff. Hidden delight.
G. B.
Great food, fantastic service.
M. S.
Very nice place from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. I must say this place is unique for it's style and theme very vintage and exclusive wine.
The staff where amazing, really friendly and postive attitude throughout.
The food was also fantastic. We enjoyed every single bite from the prawns and scallop main. I will be recommending this place to my friends and family. This really is a hidden gem.
q.
The pub is beautiful and the service is really great. We had 2 starters which tasted great and the cold dish "mixed meat collection" was also great. The dessert was also great. If there is something I want to complain is that their is sirloin 220 g over-cooked which made I am really disappointed and I did make a complain to the waitress and manager. Overall, I still like it very much because the waitress is really lovely and friendly.
R. M.
One of the very best places in London, a ton of charm and staff who really do look after you.
As a fan of good wine and the odd cigar, I have quite a fondness for this place. I had found it by accident many moons ago and it is never far from my mind when im in the area.
A great place for a working lunch, drink or dinner. As well as a nice place to show off, the hidden gem of south London.
Very close to the many sites of borough and London bridge.
Also nice and quiet during the busy afternoon period, which can be a god send.
O. H.
Booked the Ovens room for a goodbye party and all 22 of us were delighted. Ben and Sarah were excellent and attentive through the whole evening, with the food and venue receiving positive comments from all. A truly unique experience. Thank you!
J. Z.
Dinner was fantastic and the sticky toffee pudding is the best so far in London
P. D.
A lovely old pub, somewhat hidden away from the busy tourist spots of London Bridge. Once inside the pub sprawls all over the place from the intimate private dining spaces downstairs to the cute courtyard hidden round the back. Great selection of wines available. Food isn't bad but it is overpriced - the quality isn't as good as the nearby Borough Market restaurants. Nevertheless, a charming little pub.
L. F.
This is a very nice wine bar. Part of the Davy's Wine Bars all over London. The food is great, many choices of good wines and a lovely cosy atmosphere. Not the best place for a young lively crowd. This place is off the beaten track which makes it a real treasure.
I. M.
This is a fantastic pub with an excellent atmosphere, great food and superb staff. Can't recommend it highly enough!
C. G.
Love the Boot and Flogger at London Bridge. Great food, reasonably priced wine, fun atmosphere and terrific service. Have to mention Jose who is an amazing host too!
T. F.
Really beautiful old place with cool food and service
D. H.
We had our wedding reception at the Boot and Flogger in London Bridge. The management team and staff did a fantastic job in organisation and making the day feel very special. In particular the food and drink was amazing, and many of our guests have noted this, and have returned since.
F. i. h. w.
An amazing pub, 2mn away from the Borough crowd. This pub is absolutely beautiful, the service is lovely and the food is very good. I didn't have a deep look on their Wine list but it seems to be more than what you'll need. I'll go again, for sure!
E. P.
Such a wonderful charming hidden gem. Fantastic food and tremendous wines available. Always head to hear when I'm in the area.
Long may it continue.
K. B.
An incredible hideaway in the middle of London. The Sunday roast and wine were exceptional, along with the interior and courtyard. I was shocked it wasn't more packed! It is seriously an absolute gem, and the staff are absolutely lovely and attentive to boot (no pun intended ;) I hope to see it more crowded the next time we go there, as Londonders are missing out by not knowing about this place!
A. I.
What an amazing hole in the wall in London! Incredible food and prices, understated old-style decor, an historic story, private rooms available, an excellent wine selection... What more could you need!
T. W.
This place feel like something between an old coach inn & a private member club, as you step in you could almost be stepping back in time. But don't get me wrong its got a great unique feel to it, with plenty of alcoves and lots of wood paneling. You don't get the younger crowds you'll find at the pubs around borough, I doubt you'll see anyone under 30, but that not a bad things.
Great for a glass of wine, then a port or sherry to go with the Cuban cigar in the court yard. Watch out for the funny opening times.
B. R.
Lovely old-fashioned wine bar slightly off the beaten track but within 5 minutes walk of London Bridge. Can get very busy so book a table if you can. Nice food and friendly efficient service.
p. b.
A good wine bar that has a decent selection of Wines on offer and a good food menu. Situated in the old part of London the bar has an appealing outside area for drinks in the summer and great cellar rooms for parties. In general the building has a character that embraces old London.
G. C.
Interesting restaurant tucked away on Redcross Street. An old building with lots of nooks and small rooms, upstairs and downstairs as well as the bar area for eating. A little challenging for those with impaired mobility. Great food, good attention to special diets (gluten free), good choices of starters, mains & desserts. Worth taking the trouble to find.
S. G.
Unique, and historical place to enjoy a glass of fine wine. Good Food too, but don't come here for a pint of beer! (Don't have any.) The Private Hire rooms look like wooden cabins in a 17th century clipper ship!
K. D.
Lovely olde pub atmosphere with delicious and simple menu. Well priced too
I. G.
Attended a function here and we had the downstairs area completely to ourselves which meant that we had plenty of space. Food was very good and staff were very friendly and helpful. Well organised (prebooked our meals) so they all came out together and were hot. Definitely recommend for a party or work function.
J. S.
Roast dinner cold, rib of beef tough, then we was told we had to leave early, because maintenance work needed to be done....i pointed out we still had a full bottle of wine and we had just finished our mains. Manager changed her mind and said we could stay for dessert. Very disappointed as we love Boot n flogger.
S. H.
A really cosy and great pub. Looks small from the outside but is very spacious with great atmosphere and extra bonus of a little beer garden. Food is very high standard for a pub, great wine selection and even cigars if that tickles your fancy.
J. H.
In a similar vein to Gordon's Wine Bar or El Vino, London seems to have a few of these olde worlde wine bars tucked away. The decor has much in common with some of London's more characterful old pubs - full of nik naks and curios, nooks and crannies, but this is unmistakably a wine bar - I don't think they serve beer at all, certainly not on draught.
On the Saturday lunchtime when I visited - when it was pleasingly very quiet, the few other customers that were there were all there to eat. However there is a decent amount of seating for customers not eating, particularly on the lower floor, if you just want to have a glass (or a bottle) of wine.
Their basic red Burgundy was passable, and not a bad price. I didn't see much at the higher end in terms of Burgundy to take my fancy though. They didn't seem to have many of the Champagnes on the list actually in stock, and the chap I spoke to didn't seem to be particularly knowledgeable about the wines on offer.
Overall if you're looking for a really high end sophisticated wine drinking experience with sommelier like guidance you're probably going to be a bit disappointed. However if you're looking for somewhere where you can get a decent, if perhaps not exceptional, glass of wine, and want to be surrounded by some old world charm while you drink it, then this is probably a good place for you.
J. G.
This is a tucked away gem for Southwark / Borough – a wine bar that's so wooden, you think you fell into the barrel itself! It has a cozy feeling to the place, but there's ample room other than the bar area, so you don't have to worry about going there at the right or wrong times, as you would at Gordon's. The wine and sherry selection is fantastic: new world and old world reds and whites on offer, as well as a giant barrel of Buck's Fizz (1 part champagne, 2 parts OJ). The opening hours tend to be a bit kooky, so check if it's open before you make the trek. Staff are really friendly and helpful in selecting wines and hospitality -- they served me and some friends 15 mins before closing, which was nice.
A. R.
Delightful bar which retains its original features, with a similarly atmospheric basement bar in addition. Great wines, and professional, friendly, polite staff. I haven't tried the food yet but it looks excellent.
P. D.
Old fashioned wine bar. Good selection of wines. Bottled beer no draft. Welcoming staff.
B.
Pub, food was ok nothing special I would have preferred fresh chips with my cod rather than oven chips for the price they charge mushy peas were tasty but portion size was a little on the small size,, 3 course for 2 people with a bottle of wine came to £101, which included £10 service charge, waitress and staff were pleasant, i think a service charge should only apply on party of four or more, service charges for 2 people should be left to customers satisfaction ,

I remember seeing "gentlemen" coming out of this place back in the 60's, when I was a very young girl. Years later I thought it was a "gentleman's club". Older people will understand this saying. However, recently myself & one of my older sisters decided to do a walk around the Borough where we grew up & to visit the graveyard in Redcross Way. I happened to mention the Boot & Flogger, which is in the same road, but my sister said she'd never heard of it. So we croosed the road for a visit. Wow what an amazing place, it's like walking back into the Dickens era. There are small dining area's over several floors & there's a feel of secrecy about it, as in the song" somewhere only we know". Dark oak & little alcoves, candelabra's & tables beautifully laid, we loved it. It was out of a Dickens novel. The staff told us we could walk around & explore. I can't express in words how this place throws you back in time. The front is very deceiving, the entrance is up a few steps & then the history hits you. They sell wines & ports & thankfully for me, as I'm not a wine drinker, a few bottled lagers & beers. They seem to have a very reasonable priced food menu. My sister & me are going to make it our "only place that we know" to chill & chill & chill, when we want to escape the other half. Very highly recommended, but beware if my sister can't get a comfortable seat be prepared for a diplomatic rotweiller.
L. A.
Cosy, comfortable wine bar with fantastic service, the staff really were excellent.
B. S.
This is an eclectic pub with lots of character. The staff were very engaging and helpful and the house white wine was very nice!
C. B.
My favourite place to have nice food and drink, bar staff are great. It's a repeat visit for me. Well worth a visit guys you won't be disappointed. 👌
G.
lovely establishment, cosy atmosphere, excellent and friendly service- but most important of all, SUMPTUOUS wine at a reasonable price. Bon swah Mon Ami!
M. H.
Nice traditional looking and feeling establishment. Went for the ‘mix and mash’ for lunch which I would highly recommend, top quality sausages and very friendly waitress!
R. J.
Went on a Friday so had to have fish and chips! Was the best I've ever tasted.. Expensive but worth it for a treat. Dickens style interior.. Very nice!
P. F.
Awesome roast beef, fabulous venue for a large group, excellent, friendly service
M. S.
the best thing about old London town
B. C.
A simply wonderful place to easily loose a whole afternoon in. Great simple food and excellent selection of fine wines. Always great service too
D. B.
Great staff. Lookout for Kerry the made one. Place is great.
D. A.
A historic coaching inn turned Vinter tucked away down a side street in London Bridge / Borough and next to Crossbones graveyard. The inside is wood panelled and has big comfy old fashion chairs,. I don't think The Boot and Flogger has a license and just uses historic laws so it can serve wine and sherry. Need to go here on a weekday as closed on weekends and closes early at about 8pm. Well worth a visit!
T. G.
One of my favourite places in London and my favourite Davy’s venue. This is a real hidden gem with a classic charm. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Highly recommended
S.
Great service and pleasant surroundings. But, don't go on a hot day, it's extremely warm in there and all the doors and windows were shut. Appreciate building is too old for aircon, but gosh it was warm!
R. W.
Excellent food in a very traditional style pub. Bookings are recommended as it gets very busy around lunch time. Not the cheapest place to eat but it's value for money.
E. D.
Great place! Friendly staff. Good food! More of a local spot, it's tucked away behind the borough street market. If you can find it, highly recommended.
K. A.
Amazing food. Fantastic service
C. S.
Food is good, staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is great. A quiet location where you can actually talk to the people at your table, I'll be back here frequently when I visit London.
J.
Charming place tucked away from London Bridge. Took a date here and the staff subtly helped me convince her I knew a claret from a beaujolais. Would recommend. Thank you.

Cheese, steak, whiskey and cigar's 🖤
A. B. (.
Another fine Davy's establishment with a reasonable selection of beers, great wine and very tasty food. Challenges the wallet but the service matches the price.
O. O.
The food is very good, exactly as described on the menu. The ambience is very cool and relaxed. Prices are pretty normal for this area and quality. Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient.
m. k.
Good selection of wines and port. Great surroundings on the ground floor. Especially liked the private function room.
N. D.
I love this place. The food is always brilliant and service great.
Obviously the wines are fantastic. Try the champagne in tankards
K. H.
Really, a hidden gem, just off London Bridge. Great wine and food selection. Very atmospheric, especially in the basement. Also has a large courtyard for those summer afternoons!
D. C.
Great ambiance like Something out of a period drama. Fantastic wine selection. Lovely food. Great service
W. R.
Historic pub, was a coaching inn, surroundings not as destroyed by tourism as some on the others nearby, decent food, wines and a veru friendly staff - hate to say it, but a good place to take American cousins and pretend it is authentic which, to be honest, it is. Also the lair for folks from the FT. Adds to the Dickensian feel having hacks!
D. M.
Great wines and very attentive service. Fish and chips were great.
M. D.
Amazing food, wines, cognacs and cigars. But the beers selection is very bad. I understand they have few beers, it's just they're very bad. That's why it's only 4 stars not 5
D. M.
Lovely spot for some wine, and they will recommend you a good one. Love the interior, good for chats over a few glasses.
E. S.
Food was lovely and it has a great atmosphere but unfortunately it was quite chilly and had to put my coat on during the meal - another diner said the same - couldn't work out where the draught was coming from.
C. R.
Really good quality food. I went there with my wife and two children. We all ordered Ribeye steak - medium to well.
L. N.
Top Sunday lunch. Great service, fantastic selection of wine and you can beat a Davy's interior!
e. m.
great cozy pub a real borough secret tucked away down a side street, interesting list of excellent wine and sherry.
Only draw back is very odd opening hours
f. c.
Walking up the stairs to the entrance is like a home coming. Hard to beat for atmosphere. Wine is good. Food is fair. I'll be back again and again.
C. T.
Such a lovely place, it’s a little gem to find! We go here a lot and have never been disappointed!
B. E.
Great ambiance and wine list. Have not eaten but is great for a post work drink or three
N. M.
Absolutely not what you would expect given the surroundings but this is a true hidden gem. Lovely bar with great staff. You must check this out.
P. O.
Great wine bar, not too crowded. Amazing wood panelled interior and cosy table arrangements. A hidden treasure in busy Southwark!
M. Y.
A cosy and special find in an unexpected place, serving great food. Only thing that could make the ambience even more special would be light background music.
T. K.
Nice food and cool downstairs departement if you are a larger group. Not the best selection of beers.
H. L.
I hadn’t been for years so was a bit worried it had lost its shine. It hasn’t. In fact it’s even better. A birthday treat for my wife.
J. D.
Well furnished, great food, great staff. Think we paid about £35 a head for two courses and a few drinks.
M. M.
Like stepping back in time. I loved it.

Great ambiance, beautiful private rooms, friendly service... Not great vegetarian options.... But otherwise good.

Awesome historic wine bar in the heart of London. Long history, many wines, brilliant food.
D. B.
Traditional high quality food and service. Excellent wine options but limited beer choices.
J. D.
Nice old pub (and it is very old). Not sure if they serve beer though. Very much a wine/port bar.

Lovely pub with great atmosphere and friendly staff, will definitely go back.

If you visit one pub in London make it this one.
