Reviews of The Canonbury Tavern
A. S.
I ordered the veggie burger and had no complaints. The fries were hot and crispy and the burger was well dressed and flavorful. You can order from the restaurant app or through the server. The decor is cozy and Christmassy at the moment. Not sure if there was a parents event there Sunday I visited, but if that’s the normal crowd there are A LOT of children. Would return!

What a brilliant place to have dinner and relax with friends. The menu is diverse and the atmosphere is just awesome. Everything about the location is superb. Had a beef burger with loaded fries and it was delicious. The staff is quite friendly and professional. The indian (I guess) waitress who served us tonight was super nice and friendly and took care of every thing on our table from drinks to food. Totally recommend!
T. C.
Amazing atmosphere, large yet cozy. With a fire. Fun and Challenging pub quiz on a Sunday. The food portion sizes are generous but as another review stated it is over cooked and dry. Had the veggie childs portion, enough for an adult. But needed some chutney or veggie gravy… very dry!
S. O.
Lovely and spacious local pub with selection of food and beers. There are separate drinking, dining, and outdoor areas all with loads of space.
P. F.
The garden is top notch - decent drink selection and the food was solid as well - keen for the summer sun to come back and soak it up at the canonbury tavern
M. R.
A large beautiful pub with a huge well laid out garden. Our food was decent/good but not outstanding as I’d expect from the bill £52 (2 x beers, 2 x burger and fries and 1 x child’s burger and fries). It’s perhaps a reflection on the area but still can’t justify this price.
H. B.
Food and first drinks came out super fast. Vege roast was tasty and big. Second round of drinks went missing for 40mins. Went in to check after 20mins, mulled wine isn’t hot. No problems but communication would have been preferable. Asked for red wine instead, nothing arrived until the mulled wine was ready a further 20mins later 🤷🏼♀️ Heaters out of gas in the outdoor area. 1 dessert out of 5 also went missing at pudding stage. Was grateful they said we could stay longer. Still a nice afternoon but would have been more relaxing to not have to chase things.
l. w.
Nice cosy pub, food looked delicious, screens to watch six nations were small, not for massive rugby lovers!
m. b.
Nothing like a warm fire and a pub quiz on a Sunday night. Love the Cannonbury Tavern!
S. S.
Nice gastro-pub spoilt by slow bar service. Huge amount of outdoor seating in the beer garden is a major plus, unfortunately the bar staff are just sloth-level service. Even when the queue is three deep along the length of the bar (itself due to the slow service) they make zero attempt at urgency. Anything up to twenty minutes is feasible to buy a drink here... come on management, make an effort!
G. A.
Nice relaxed comfortable pub. Outside sitting is excellent. Inside spacious.
N. G.
Great pub with a wonderful outside space. We went on a Sunday and we had the Sunday roast. It was magnificent, with a good sized portion and a fantastic ox cheek croquette which was a true treat.
The service is impeccable, incredibly fast. Even using the app to order it's been simply perfect.
Good selection of gins, we really enjoyed our day here!
E. M.
Lovely garden, however inside was as if Covid19 was something of the past.... . Also ensure you have a deep wallet
B. L. W.
Awesome place to host a wedding dinner and not too far from Islington Town Hall. Plenty of space, attentive staff and delicious and well presented food. I photographed a wedding reception there recently and would highly recommend it!
I. M. F.
Beautiful and cosy place, lovely staff and good food. We had some problems with rations (no gravy on some dishes and very little ox cheek for others), but it was a good roast.
S. R.
Buzzing nice pub. A little too big for an intimate, personal night out. Would be great for a loud get together. Im sure it would be better mon - wed if you want quieter. I did go at peak time. My bad.
T. R.
Good food, good service and welcoming staff. Always enjoyable. Thankyou
R. H.
Pre drinks before Liam Gallagher at Finsbury Park. Huge selection of beers, massive beer garden (for London) and food hit the mark. Table service wasn’t great but it was busy..
A. K.
Nice interior, nice staff.
K. T.
Great place to spent your Monday afternoons next to the fire place..
Great service from Melsi..

A great big pub! If you are a George Orwell fan like me, apparently he had lived nearby in Canonbury Square would frequent the pub back in the 1940's. There are some paintings of George Orwell inside the pub. I have been going to The Canonbury Tavern on-and-off for a number of years and always enjoy my visits. The prices are typical for a London pub and the place has a good atmosphere.
R. B.
Great beer, log fire, nice food, relaxed atmosphere. What more could you want in a neighbourhood pub?
F. W.
We booked with the Canonbury for a lunch after our wedding during covid restrictions, they were super accommodating (unlike a lot of other venues) and we were looking forward to celebrating with them. We have been to the pub several times before and have always had fabulous food and great service. Unfortunately my Dad was admitted to hospital and was very poorly in the week of our wedding and we needed to cancel. We contacted the Canonbury two days before the event and they refunded us in full with no questions asked. They are lovely people and I would highly recommend them.
J. K.
Rump steak would not usually be my first choice. Time to rethink, this rump was perfectly rare, tender and flavourful. I want to know the butcher. Chips were perfect and the simple things are hardest to get right. The watercress salad, dressed with olive oil, lemon juice and salt was perfect. I shall definitely order this again.
D. M.
Lovely pub! Deceivingly large and spacious with comfy couches and great food and drinks
B. H.
We celebrated our son's wedding there recently. The food and wine were first class.
The staff couldn't do enough for us, and were so friendly and welcoming.
Many thanks for helping to make the day so memorable!
M.
My local. Great pub for a drink with friends. If you’re eating, get the fish and chips.
M. A.
The place is amazing , in particular the outdoor ! The only bad thing was the receptionist. We asked so many times for a table for 2 outside and she was always rude even if there were plenty of tables free.
She sat us inside in a super tight corner and even indoor the pub was empty.
Her attitude wasn’t nice at all as if she was doing us a favour to have us in the pub.
Food was nice and drinks too.
T. B.
A beautiful pub, in a beautiful area. But the prices are unreasonable, “The Shack” does decent burgers, but the main menu leaves a lot to be desired. I’m local, but wouldn’t consider this “my local”.
C. B.
I had a cheeseburger and two pints after a long horrible day at work. Perfect. Every bite a delight. Really like this pub, nice vibe and very good playlist too.
H. R.
3.75 stars. Great beer garden. Sun was out and so the large beer garden was in high demand. Lots of tables but had to make do with sitting inside. Ordered food and drink via the youngs app. Arrive was fairly prompt but as mentioned ordering was via an app which took 5 mins to setup for each of us. Good selection of beers and although I didn't eat more than bar snack the other food passing by looked ok but not gastro. Come here for the outdoor seating and a few drinks on a sunny day and you won't regret it.
M. B.
Decent pub, staff could be more welcoming and a few more smiles😃
T. S.
Chill pub, great garden, fun quiz, friendly staff. Food could be a bit more veggie friendly.
B.
Nice setting and friendly staff. The beer is way too overpriced, but I guess it's just a London thing.
W.
Went there for my birthday. Knocked over my first beer and had it replaced. Had very tasty burgers from the shack. We messed up our leaving time and the lovely staff extended it for us. Amazing staff and amazing place!
j.
We arrived when the kitchen just opened and whe had 2 waiters the young female came across as if we were a burden on her and forgot some of our drinks when the food came one of us had cold chips on a meal that had just been cooked 😬 but thankfully everything else was fine the waiter we had serving our food was a gentleman and anything that was asked was brought to us food was tasty most of us had fish and chips and we all loved it
S. W.
Lovely looking place, good selection of drinks, family friendly and dog friendly... But DO NOT EAT HERE... Definitely the worst pub food I have ever eaten.
L. D.
Manager is great with exceptional ATD, but floor staff quite spaced out and disorganised. Ordering drinks through the app just to have them standing at the bar service point forever without being served to the table
V. C.
What a gem in Islington! Such a large beer garden and during these cold days, they've set up a huge gazebo outside with heating. It was a lovely atmosphere for dinner with friends but the staff were a bit so so. The girl who had our table didn't seem like she wanted to be there! The starters came out with the mains at the same time too which was a shame but otherwise the food was delicious and red wine was great!
P. R.
Tucked away local pub with probably one of the best beer gardens in North London. It was 35c today and it's probably why the lady at reception wasn't exactly friendly. The rest of the bar staff were brilliant with great full table service. Really good selection of beer and spirits. Must try the burgers with curly fries 👌🏼
P. C.
Large pub, clearly refurbished and opened-up inside in recent years. Good service and a good range of beers (mainly Young's). Clearly a popular place on a Saturday evening, but they have plenty of seats.
N. A.
Great pub. Classy establishment. Super friendly staff who always make you feel welcome.
G. D.
Let me say first, there's a good selection of beers and the food was really nice.
Great garden.
Problem was the overall experience.
Scan the QR code, pain, but ok. But to have to download an app, create an account, and then find the menu matches neither the physical version nor what's actually on offer is frustrating.
The staff are capable of taking orders, because you can't order what's on thier chalk boards any other way, but they're not keen.
I resent paying for a bottle of wine before knowing what the choices are, since the menus are meaningless.
That's what's missing, the human touch: they should take your order personally and let you know what's available.
You can't blame covid restrictions for everything
M. H.
Great outdoor area on a hot day, really nice pub and atmosphere. Our drinks orders got a bit mixed up but they were tasty!
A. B.
Amazing pub in the back streets of Canonbury. We sat in the beautiful beer garden and had truly delicious burgers from the Burger Shack! The staff were friendly and very helpful with choosing our food and wine. Can't wait to go back! Highly recommended!
D. C.
Awesome outdoor space. Gets crowded so show up early to secure a table. Nice for selection, ok beer selection.
C. S.
Nice pub with huge garden. The day we went there was a family vibe to it with lots of kids. Food was good although service was a little slow.
A. N.
A pub with a nice location and pretty big beer garden. The beer is slightly pricy but that's the sort of place it is.
a. v.
Nice drinks and decent food.quite long wait for food and drinks both at the bar or via the app
X. X.
friendly staff.. excellent service.. Kostas is the best, tasty food beautiful and warm place...
A. K.
Perfect place for some drinks and food, they have inner and garden seats as well.
B. L.
Nice, spacious sitting area outside. Lots of green space. Overpriced drinks and not so friendly staff.
S. R.
Great Sunday roast
t. m.
Wonderful service (place was busy) but lovely staff found us a table right by log fire. All 3 of us had vegan options and ALL 3 dishes delicious. The cheese on one of our options was that good we couldn’t believe it was vegan so the chef was so lovely he sent out the cheese in its packets so we could take pics and buy for ourselves when we got back to Wirral. Amazing food .... attentive staff.... great prices and such a lovely warm, friendly place to eat 😊
T.
Excellent food and very friendly service. Also dog friendly so 5 stars!
B.
The roasts were amazing and the staff were super friendly and attentive. The space was huge so it’s a nice change that they didn’t squeeze in as many tables as possible. We were a table of five on a Sunday for roast, and they accommodated us so easily without a booking.
S. G.
Huge garden which is great, but terrible service and awful food. I ordered soup and a side and couldn’t get past the first bite - the soup tasted like it was a from a can and the vegetables were frozen with freezer burn aftertaste. Will come here again for a drink only because the garden is good.
A. G.
Beautiful beergarden and nice food. My favourite beer garden.
I. W.
A good pub. I went here to watch an England rugby match and the pub was very busy but the hardworking staff managed to deal with the queues without much fuss. There weren’t many TVs to watch the rugby but this isn’t really a sports pub so I can’t blame them for that. They have a nice outdoor seating area so I will definitely be coming back here when the weather gets a bit warmer. Didn’t try the food but they have what looks to be an impressive kitchen.
E. H.
Beaitiful venue with lovely relaxed staff and excellent outside and inside facilities in the heart of Islington, in walking distance from Islington Town Hall. Therefore highly recommended for wedding ceremonies, even under lockdown limitations.
J. S.
Beautiful beer garden but would not recommend visiting this pub for food. Had it not been eat out to help out, we would have been extremely unhappy with the quality of food and service. Pretty bad food and extremely overpriced for what it is. A real shame because it's a beautiful pub.
K. K.
Best service I've ever had! Thank you great job Melsi
B. C.
Lovely pub with a terrace just off Canonbury square. Service was through their app and unfortunately super slow but the terrace is lovely when it's nice outside! Very good CoVID measures.
S. L.
The place is beautiful with a massive terrace so perfect for sunny days like today. The app to order was quite annoying, not very easy to use but eventually we made it work.
S. D.
Nice place, clean bogs.. pricey but then look where you are.
Would visit again
C. C.
The garden area is great, and there's an excellent selection of drinks in both beers and spirits. The staff are friendly but appear understaffed behind the bar and everytime I've been it can take up to 40 minutes to get a drink. The outdoor burger kitchen is a cool idea, however the quality of the burgers is no where near worth the £16 price tag. Likewise the roasts are priced at £19 and each roast that came out was overcooked and dry. With such a great location and layout it's a shame that they've dropped the ball in a few key areas
T. M.
Nice large pub, good outdoor space, food and drinks are slightly expensive for the value
M. L.
Canonbury Tavern As soon as we arrived, we was greeted by the most friendly staff. Could not do enough for us,from start to finish. Beautiful garden areas..gorgeous space inside. Its obvious to me that the Canonbury Tavern is a great place to be.
We had food from the burger shack outside.
What a burger!! out of this world.
Will be returning to this establishment,as soon as I can.. Super Happy.
E. S.
This local pub is fantastic when the weather is good as it has a beautiful spacious garden at the back with several areas to enjoy - from a quiet sunny corner to the main area in the shade of trees or next to the bbq point, or the families area. Great buzz, good hearty food, although could be more people at the bar serving drinks as the wait was slightly too long. However, great venue for any larger celebrations and they have a private function room upstairs. Very close to tube station- nice hangout for sure
M. D.
A really nice place with lovely food and friendly atmosphere.
C. B.
Has a beautiful beer garden. Food was ok, although I'm not entirely sure whether our order came out wrong or they ran out of ingredients but the paid for extra blue cheese on the burger was not blue cheese. The coffee however, was pretty nice.
S. H.
Food was a bit meh and bland. But a nice bottle of wine, lovely garden and decent service evened it out. Visit for drinks
P. J.
Really nice and spacious pub, lovely atmosphere watching the rugby. Then all had a very nice meal. Considering how many of us there were excellent meal and service. Well done to all the staff xx
J. C.
Amazing beer garden, perfect pub for sunny days. Gin & tonics are on point 👌
S. C.
Top beer garden, good tucked away spot for a beer 🍻
N. P.
Really lovely pub, great outdoor seating area. However outdoor license finishes at 9pm, though this is likely to do with it being in a residential area.
Also the bar was incredibly slow, took about 30 minutes to get a drink. Given they had the England game on it was predictable how busy it was. Drinks aren't the cheapest though I'm not so used to London! 😅
Dog friendly too which is a big bonus! 😍
J. W.
Very pleasant welcome and service. Tables well spaced. Only issue was that most of us had problems using the app.
J. C.
Lovely garden, drinks as you'd expect, didn't have the food but looked nice. Nice staff too
K. B.
This is a drinking establishment...not a pub. It is frankly clearly lovely. Well designed. Great outdoor area. Good food. Family and dog friendly. BUT...its not my bag. It feels the soul has left. It has no character. It should appeal to everyone...and again, for me, this means it doesn't appeal to me.
M. J.
Nice food,Decent array of drinks on offer.
Nice back garden.
M. M.
A very lively and busy pub with a good selection of Youngs bitters on tap.
As it was a Sunday, we had the roast of course. Good portions, nice sides but the meats themselves were a tad dry. A shame as otherwise was a good meal.
B. A.
This place has a great vibe, but unfortunately their food is really horrible. We live nearby so we have come a few times and the only thing that is edible is the fish and chips. The scotch egg was hardboiled and served cold, the pork chops were okay but way overpriced for the amount of food and the pearl barley dish wish one of the worst things ever served to me at a restaurant. I didn’t have the heart to say anything because the staff is lovely! Come here to drink, don’t waste your money ordering food until they redo their menu or hire a new chef.
S. A. S.
Really nice pub with a good atmosphere. inside has a really nice decor. Unfortunately the food let it down, felt like the food was rushed out with not much care when cooking it. Pub has a good selection of beers
L. H.
Very popular picturesque pub with his atmosphere, but not-great-quality and over-priced food and coffee. I had fish n chips - there were plenty of chips, but the fish was quite small, undercooked and didn't taste fresh. We visited it on a sunny Saturday afternoon staying until evening. The staff were really friendly and smiley in spite of the thankless task of serving a very full bar, but the wait at bar was about thirty minutes.
A. R.
Lovely pub! Fantastic garden. Attentive staff and great food. Highly recommended.
N. S.
Great place for drinks and eating with small or large groups.
Lots of spaces, but can get quite crowded and busy sometimes. Drinks and beer are great, food is regular. Service at the bar is quite fast and the staff was very friendly. Reservations are accepted here.
S. Z.
Large pub and restaurant with a gorgeous, outdoor beer garden in a lovely area of Islington. Great for groups (takes bookings both for the bar and restaurant). Food is decent with usual suspects (fish and chips, burgers, with some fish and meat mains as well). It seems they've had a recent change in bar menu with some burgers being served from the beer garden which caused a little confusion on our last visit but which will hopefully be ironed out soon!
T. B.
Excellent looking pub. The only downfall is the bar staff appear to have one gear, taking up to an average wait time of 10 minutes to be served.
The food was burnt when it came out to our table.
I have heard good things about the food there and maybe it was just an off day.
J. H.
Went here for a pub quiz on the Sunday night. Very good space and host was excellent. The quiz itself had questions for everyone and was engaging.
Only slight issue was with food, which wasn't particularly cheap and had cold chips come out with it.
E. H.
Good food, excellent servis from Melsi👌🤤
S. C.
3 stars as the garden is really lovely and a nice place for a drink, but the food is awful - would not recommend to eat there.
M. V.
Absolutely in love with this place - after relocating to the UK AND receiving my flat keys yesterday, I think I found my first local!
m. p.
Great pub. Disappointing food.
C. l.
Held a birthday party here on Saturday which involved watching the Six Nations during the afternoon and a meal in the evening. All my guests have commented on what a spacious, relaxed and welcoming pub The Canonbury Tavern is. Efficient bar and restaurant staff experience throughout the whole day. We shall be returning when the weather gets warmer to enjoy the outside areas. Thank you Martyn, Mike and the team 😁
P. K.
Great pub with a huge garden.
m. l.
Good pub, good food and helpful staff... Too many yummy mummies and their offspring making noise. I'd go again but would avoid the dining area for the above reasons. We need yummy mummies and their gormless husband's to keep the economy and this pub afloat, so by all means. Have a walk along the old River park- delightful on a sunny day-to-day end up in the pub for gastro grub.
T. J.
It was ok. Very nice pub, however the food was quite ordinary. We had the Xmas dinner... Duck croquettes lacked flavor. Salmon was ok, nothing special. Then the turkey was quite dry. The pork belly was again a bit dry, and the skin was soft, not crackling. The pear and fig tart was pretty terrible... Dry and flavourless fruit in a puff pastry. The Xmas pudding was nice. So all in all, slightly underwhelming on the food front! Great venue and bar, and a good selection of beers and ales
A. M.
Two of us visited for Sunday lunch, we were able to sit in the garden and enjoy the great weather. I had the roast beef followed by white chocolate dessert both of which were very good. Service was friendly and efficient (the waitress also recommended a nice red wine to go with the beef). Look forward to going back soon.
B. K.
Very lovely place, big garden, nice food (and big portions, too)..
S. T.
Wow the food here is delicious and the wine here is first class.
The staff are so, so, so friendly, helpful and welcoming.
M. A. J.
Very attentive service and friendly staff. But running out of half the lunch menu by 14h on a Sunday showed a lack of management. I hope this was a one off bad event because that beer garden is just absolutely adorable on a warm sunny day, and I do want to come back
R. G.
Nice spot. Really big garden round the back. Good drinking spot
V. H.
Very good and friendly service. Well done Melsi
T. A.
I always love going to the Canonbury Tavern. It's spacious, welcoming, kids friendly with a good selection of craft beers and well prepared and honestly priced tasty pub food. I refrained from posting a review just because I'm scared it'd get too crowded :)
B. H.
Lovely pub which has recently been renovated and looks great. We found the staff unbelievably helpful and friendly, even when we were being demanding! Good selection of beers, tasty food, and a good garden. We'll be back!
R. C.
Nice and grand interiors. unfortunately quite a simple beer selection. Didn't eat food as menu wasn't that appealing - seemed pretty standard. But cant properly comment on the food. Was pretty busy so was a buzzing vibe.
J. S.
Great pub. One of the best
A. R.
Food is terrible.. but don't write this place off! Great atmosphere for drinks with beautiful decor. Just pick from the bar menu. Staff were friendly too.
J. S.
Great friendly family pub.food was delivered quickly I had a very tasty burger.wide range of beers ale n wine. Staff welcoming and friendly.do again.
B. W.
Huge garden that is awesome in the summer. Gets busy so the food service leaves something to be desired. Beer list is tied to the brewery that owns the pub, so don't expect anything more exciting that meantime.
A. W.
Sunday roast was disasterous. No gravy!! Still a nice spot for drinks outside.
D. “. t. m. L.
Lovely pub Lovely manager Martin excellent food.
n. g.
Delicious food, Try the chicken sambo. Wonderful beer garden!
J. H.
The good:
Location and environment - fantastic. During summer this place comes into its own. Get there early (five on weekdays and lunchtime over weekends) to secure a table amongst the hordes of good looking aussies and well-to-do brits who make up the large majority of customers.
It IS child friendly, so expect to have hyperactive midgets snapping at your ankles whilst screaming at the top of their lungs until the fun wears off and they're dragged home kicking and screaming by parents. Having said that, if you are willing to lurk and swoop on a table or tables strategically further from parents and their swarm, you may enjoy a period of reasonably peaceful relaxation before a pram finds itself parked next to you. Lurking and swooping is, incidentally, often the only way you will actually get a table here on sunny days. The patrons are generally fairly civilised, though, and respond to enquiries around whether they are leaving with a yes or a no as opposed to a filthy look or stone cold ambivalence.
Food seems good, not cheap but then not stingy on the portions so if you're in it for the grub, fair enough.
The bad:
Folks, having worked in hospitality and in london on the wrong side of the bar, it has to be asked:
What are you doing back there, and WHO is supposed to be managing that bar?
The first time we turned up several years back, the service area was three deep. It was not a particularly hot day, which meant that there were not that many people in the venue. What this means, then, is that a lot of customers had just been waiting for a long time.
We loitered for fifteen minutes for the two blokes to get through waiting punters (some becoming visibly fed up with the 'strategy' of your bar staff). Having had the masses eventually cleared out (some people just said they were giving up and left), we were essentially one of two groups left at the bar and as such, had to be served. Fine. Everybody gets one.
However:
On returning to your business three times now (see second paragraph above covering the great location), it is becoming painfully apparent that the owner and / or manager do not know how to run a bar.
This is not rocket science or quantum physics. It is simple observational logic.
You DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RUN A BAR CORRECTLY.
Okay?
This might be a bitter pill to swallow, you might take offence and find any number of immediate retorts to the fact stated above. You may choose to deny the fact completely. I have worked in more than ten hospitality establishments, including bars in the capital, and i can tell you that you are doing it wrong.
Our last visit involved finding a seat outside and then doubling up on drink orders due to the fact we all knew it would be complete chaos trying to secure service from your bar staff. Sure enough, three deep again in amazed customers, your people not once checking position of people in the queue (newsflash: it IS your staff's responsibility to note individual people's position and actually make sure that they are not being passed over in favour of late arrivals? it is NOT up to waiting customers - some of who get to stand for 30 minutes or more and yes, i did wait over half an hour at your bar just to order two beers the last time we chose to visit your establishment - to tell your staff they have waited for so long that it is eventually necessary to stick an entire arm over the bar counter and ask what the hell is going on only be greeted by bemused or, in the case of your european lady friend who wanders around looking like she'd rather be elsewhere, indignant looks coupled with comments about 'just waiting'?)
Please do not bother replying with pleas to 'give us another chance'. Fix your bar management - train your staff up or hire an accredited professional who knows how bars should work - and watch your profits hit the ceiling as happy customers flock to fill those coffers.
Or don't, and keep flapping around with disinterested staff who clearly don't care, wondering why you should be doing a bigger take in the london sunshine but strangely are not.
B. G.
Went here for Christmas party meal and the food was average. I felt a bit expensive for what was received but maybe as I'm vegetarian. Half a bowl of soup...followed by Wellington on a bed of brocolli and pudding inedible in my opinion.
A. I.
Great pub with a nice outdoor space. Staffs were polite and family friendly pub. would def recommend :)
A. S.
Great food and restraint name loved the atmosphere and would definitely recommend. People had great service and food was rapidly at your table. The humble tweet of the manager from the staff kitchen was all that could be heard in the restraint of serinity. Order the wopper burger as it is cheap and tastes really good. The decor was great and looks very attractive. If I could go back I would but as I live in america it is rather hard to find my way back across the border and with trumps current domain it may become even harder for amazing people like me to travel to eat wopper burgers. I hope you enjoyed my muscularly structured paragraph. it was thoroughly enjoyable and pleasurable to write. Good ridance middle class felows. I wish you a labour of love and NO FOOD POISONING!!! Allow it cuz
N. D.
Great pub. Massive garden area, massive on the inside too. I've not been there in winter but imagine the fire setup is good. Food was decent too.
K. M.
Came on a Wednesday for lunch which had some good options and was very nice. Moved to the bar area and worked with a colleague all afternoon on our laptops. It was relatively quiet so we were able to talk and work on our project well.
D. S.
Lovely attractive building with a great garden but the lack of bar staff continues to bewilder. On a busy summer evening the wait can be ridiculous 15, even 20 minutes which does spoil the experience somewhat.
r. w.
Staff were attentive and friendly. We had really lovely food. All of us (6 in total) enjoyed our time there. Reason for only three stars - got told by the staff they only get 10% from the gratuity.
Z. M.
Great place with amazing atmosphere and a big garden.
I visited the tavern during covid-19 period. The stuff takes all the necasseary precautions for it.
I would definetly recommend visiting it.
F. i. h. w.
Absolutely enjoyed dinner with friends there. Lovely service, good wine list and delicious food. Wasn't that crowded that night (Wednesday), not sure what it looks like when very very busy.
G. C.
The best garden in Islington... except when the bees are about. :o) Great place for a Summer afternoon, and the food in the restaurant is top-class. Plenty of beers on tap, and *almost* enough seating inside.
Great place to meet your friends.
p. N.
Recently renovated and changed management, so much better now! Great vibe, nice atmosphere, superb garden with awesome grill menu. Pulled pork burger and brisket sandwich were brilliant. Will be back to eat in the restaurant for sure as the food looked so so good.
J. J.
Great ambiance, the terrace outside is lovely and a Sunday roast will be enough to last until the end of the day! I would definitely recommend the roast lamb.
I. A.
Amazing!!! I organised my wife's surprise 40th and the staff were amazing (Katy, Blue and Justine) The venue was perfect and the food was delicious! I asked if they can provide halal food as some my guests can only eat halal and they were able to accommodate my request! Would definitely recommend
N. C.
Great pub if you’re sat inside - and the snacks/starters are yum. The roast was pretty average and quite expensive though.
D. M.
Lot of beer and nice outdoor seating
R. K. M.
Beautiful place to enjoy a drink... Very happy with majority of the staff, shame the odd one person doesn't check the glasses are empty before picking them up! I would definitely recommend!
M.
Excellent food and menu choices. Polite and courteous staff. Large breakout areas inside and out, with good social distancing measures and protocols in place.
f. s.
The food is really just ok. Inattentive service makes for long waits. The pub itself is alright, but the atmosphere is not particularly warm or welcoming.
B. O.
One of the nicer pubs in the area.
H. F.
Have spent many a sunny evening in this place. The garden is great in the evenings but avoid like the plague on a Saturday afternoon unless you have children. Given the large garden and open space of the restaurant it turns into the Islington Creche for the afternoon - with parents too busy enjoying a sauv blanc than worrying about their children running around annoying the rest of us! Bar staff very slow, sometimes unnecessarily - but the food is great and the garden is lovely so always seem to venture back!
G. M.
Super place, indoor and the garden
E. S.
Great atmosphere and delicious Sunday roast! Service was average.
L. K.
Good bar, great garden, terrible restaurant. Don't go there for a date, it is extremely loud even if there is no music. You will have to scream at your date. For partying with your buddies it's great. Don't eat there.
J. R.
Went on a Thursday night, very nice and chilled evening. had an Irish band in for the evening who were very good. The food smelt really nice although we didn't try it.
M. B.
Friendly staff and great pub quiz on a Sunday evening. Manager was kind enough to let me buy a decent sized rug from them that they weren't using anymore for our balcony at home
a. g.
Had our Christmas dinner there and the food was horrible. One of the director had to buy us chip. And half went to to macdonal's for food. No going to lie but the drink are great. Like they are not to stingy with the alcohol
G. J.
Pleasant, large, comfortable, traditional pub. Close to Canonbury Sq, Essex Road and Upper Street. Very pleasant staff, fine fish & chips and a decent pint of Young's.
J. S.
Good food and delicious beer. Great staff and a toasty fire
A. S. A.
Good beers, kind people , good atmosphere and nice gardens
I. T.
Just a short walk from Highbury & Islington tube in a beautiful part of town. The Canonbury has a huge beer garden for the summer and decent selection of beers. The food is good and half price on Mondays, so tastes even better. Also an enjoyable pub quiz on a Sunday evening. Everything you could want!
R.
Great pub, went to the quiz on Sunday night and it was lots of fun! Ordered the fish and chips but unfortunately they had ran out which was disheartening, opted for the pie instead which was good.
M. T.
Me and my friends had really Good Time..Nice food and really Good cocktails...Staff was amazing and great service. .Love it every minute i spent there. .definetley we will come back again ...
D. R.
Not the warmest welcome from the host, but our waiter was great.
y. s.
Lovely setting, great food, slow service but I'd say covid isn't helping, a tad overpriced but it's Islington
S. N.
Drinks a bit expensive but decor and atmosphere lovely - staff friendly and food top class - roast dinners on Sunday's, plus lovely beer garden - it's best to reserve a table if there's more than 4 in your company
e. h.
As always the canonbury pub is great, the atmosphere is perfect and the people here are so welcoming. A specific shout out to Ben who is always so kind and accommodating and generally such a great host.
M. M.
Most enjoyable. Friendly staff, great with kids, thank you. Varied menu, tasty food, generous portions. Huge selection of liquid refreshments!
H. P.
Lovely old building on a charming Islington street. Had a good range of beers and wines and although the service was good the food, unfortunately was only OK. We ate in the bar but they also have a restaurant which is supposed to be good.
P. B.
Nice big location. Good beers on offer and friendly staff. However, as you would expect in this location very expensive.
M. H.
Awesome! They sell beer here. Also there's a great big garden. So you can drink beer in the garden. Or stay indoors and eat food. Or eat food outdoors and drink beer indoors. It's all good.
o. b.
We went with some work colleagues a few weeks ago to have dinner at the tavern, the food was excellent and so was the service. I would really recommend this place
W. M.
Nice bar, drinks good but food not that great, I ordered a chicken and ham pie which arrived at the table 5 mins later, my friends ordered the duck and blue cheese salad, this came to the table 10 mins after the pie
n. m.
Genuinely great pub atmosphere from day to evening. Friendly staff, good food, great selection of beer wine and gin. Real favourite with locals.
P. O.
Excellent Saturday afternoon lunch in TheCanonbury (Aug.8) with some friends visiting Islington for the first time. Really liked the beer-garden and great service.
Pros: FlatIron Steak (all of us had it)/very tasty. Beer selection & Knowledgable staff (YakimaRed and MeantimeLager was suggested and devoured)
Cons: We had to leave too early to go to a pre-planned event in another part of London :(. (Nobody wanted to leave!)...
J. W.
Pricey pub but excellent beer garden and service.
M. C.
Tasty food nice portions. Lovely garden for sitting outside in the summer. Cozy atmosphere indoors.
P. M.
Lovely pub, fantastic beer garden. Brilliant scotch eggs and very good burgers. Been here several times, staff are great
C. B.
Lovely garden. Bar staff try their best - but it does take a while to get the pints in. Pleasant place though. Lovely bouncers.
G. S.
Lovely garden and a great burger. Covid safety was very good :)
A. V.
I really love it there. The decor is nice and despite its rather big size it feels cosy. Cocktails are great and food very good as well.
P. C.
The first time I've ventured to this pub in a few year's and what a great decision it was, As soon as we walked in the bar staff welcomed us like old friends the beer was spot on and the beer garden was exceptional but the best bit was a grade1 burger shack which in my opinion would more than hold its own on any high street, So glad I have made the return trip 10/10
J. M.
Great pub, excellent service, good beer garden
M. M.
Nice decor and garden. Hard to beat on a sunny day. Haven't tried the food but looked like your typical gastropub food.
Garden and beer is all I need
g. f.
First of all the staff is great. There were two young women there this morning who were as friendly and efficient as can be. The pub is great.
R. J.
A big, spacious pub with a wall dedicated to George Orwell, and that had a Stephen Fry quote written on a chalkboard on the way in. It's very, very middle class but in the best way it's possible for it to be.
J.
Nice pub with fantastic garden, decent drinks selection, very mediocre food which is fairly reasonably priced. Would go again for drinks but not food.
A. P.
Chic tavern in the middle of Islington. Good selection of food and ale, although a bit expensive. But nice setting, private outdoor sitting area and friendly staff. Good vibes overall!
J. T.
Tried the Xmas taster menu at their marketing event. Absolutely delicious, creative and beautifully presented. Would recommend booking here! Large but cosy venue tucked away in Islington.
K. B.
Great food with a huge garden area at the back with a burger shack open when I visited. Nice laid back vibe and while I didn't eat, the food looked super.
M. S.
Lovely pub, great outdoor garden, nice wine, and amazing staff
C. C.
The kitchen let the waiting staff down with slow service we waited over an hour and a half for our mains and when it came out it was cold! Lovely pub staff are friendly just a shame we was let down today.
M. L.
Good spot to watch the euros, really enjoyed the beef burger
A. V.
Pork belly was top notch as was slow cooked egg with beef cheek and squid with chorizo. With food this good all you can do is tip your hat to the chef and the staff, job well done.
A. K.
Very pretty pub, large outside area with lots of seating. Decent range of beers, and pretty good food. Pricy though!
P.
Excellent pint of Proper Job. Very large outdoor area. A champagne socialists type of place, but sufficiently large enough to avoid too close contact.
R. S.
Lovely pub and beer garden, I didn't have any food but the food coming up looked really nice. The only downside to this pub is it is very pricey.
R. A.
A nice pub with a massive beer garden, great food for a pub and a good selection of drinks.
Saying that, you have to get here early to get a table outside in the sun and it gets very busy!
N. S. L.
Lovely pub with a great garden but there are never enough bar staff and often wait 15 min to be served a drink at peak times
J. A. B.
Good food, good staff, good beer. Not cheap. Peculiar layout of the four tables we reserved so had to shuffle them around
A. M.
beautiful interior, tasty food
J. S.
Great ambiance, fast service and good food.
J. H.
Huge pub with a huge beer garden and I the summer when visited had an out door burger shack also. Wide selection of beers and on a Sunday they have a pub quiz.
S. O.
My favourite burger in London
Y. S.
It's OK, but it's very big, fine for big groups, has a huge garden, the food is OK but if it's a quirky gastro pub atmosphere go elsewhere.
v. a.
Amazing outdoor tables.
Very tasty Sunday roast.
Friendly and warm service
A. G.
Nice enough pub - but beers could be better kept. Will go for 'safe' standard offerings next time
P. C.
Great pub in a lovely residential spot. Unfortunately too many reserved tables so we couldn't stay and have food.
B. L.
Great pub with superb outdoor! Very strict distancing rules and order from the table!
s. m.
Absolutely stunning pub, I'd imagine it's fantastic on a sunny day!! Would've liked to see more dark beers though
G. F.
Great outside space. Excellent wine list. Friendly staff. Okay food and the kitchen is sometimes a bit overwhelmed.
A. N. T. j.
Watched arsenal win the FA Cup her (16-17 season). Great place to see the game, wicked atmosphere get here if you're a gooner on march!
I. C.
A great pub, popular with the locals. Great drink selection and food at good prices. Building and garden are fantastic.

M. S.

Ornate 2 storey pub in a lovely leafy part of Islington. I’ve only been during the day but they have a lovely beer garden.
K. T.
Excellent beer garden, perfect for catching up with friends and a party. The staff are accommodating and from my visit they hose a great wedding reception.
G. M.
Would not eat there again as i found an elastic band in my food and they tried to deny it. The pub itself is beautiful with beautiful gardens
n. l.

Friendly, airy and inviting. The food is good and the place welcomes dogs. We are all looking forward to a return visit when we are in the area.
D. J. F.
Food was very nice and good range of drinks. Was quite loud inside though, which detracted from the experience, but the food was excellent.
M. K.

N. H.
Great beer garden with friendly, efficient service.
J. B.
Canonbury lovely place to come and eat specially in the summer as the have a big garden. And the pub is very kid friendly.
M. G.
Very friendly staff, I enjoyed the very large potion of fish and chips as well as the ample space indoors and outdoors.

Upscale pub with decent food. Great for groups, inside or outside areas are well looked after.
A. R.
Decent roast with generous portions. Enjoyed the pub quiz on Sunday evening
K. W.
Leafy garden in the city. Super busy and a bit pricier than your average London haunt. But on a sunny Saturday afternoon? It's up there with the best.
L. D.
Beautiful pub. Lots of outdoor seating. Great burgers. I love going here
J. R.
Had the most expensive pint I've ever had in a UK pub but very nice beer and lovely place.
O. N.
Nice garden and OK drinks (Young pub).
S. L.
One of the best places to go on a sunny day...great beer garden in a gorgeous residential area...only let down by the quality of the food at times and slow service at the bar when it's busy.
J. W.
Great local pub - nice venue (with very pleasant garden in summer), friendly, reasonable range of beers and food.

A. S.
Although quite cozy pub, the service was a bit slow and the chicken roast a bit bland. Perhaps it was just a bad day
O. P.

R. M.

D.
Superb pub great food great hospitality staff great and manager Martin made you feel like family nothing was to much trouble

The renovation they've done to this place since last summer is great, you won't get too many better beer gardens in zone 2.
N. H.
Nice outside garden where my friend hosted birthday drinks. Pleasant atmosphere inside and good selection of beers.
j. g.
The Canonbury Tavern was amazing from the host at the door to the staff serving 100% l Will be back again
A. P.
Great range of beer on tap and a great big beer garden out back. Fun youngish crowd but not too hipsterish.
A. B.
Friendly staff, but unfortunately they just don't seem to be able to cater for the masses who visit their delightful garden on a hot summer's day.
B. L.
Lovely atmosphere....staff very helpful and lovely
J. O.
Sunday roast was average and the dessert menu was very restricted. No chocolate options!
j. l.

More use for restaurant rather than pub and more so in the summer for its garden. Feels a little corporate but what the hell, I'm happy !!
M. C. C.
Great huge pub. The new fit out looks great and the food is top quality.
J. L.
