Reviews of The Chandos
A. M.
Really pleasantly surprised by The Chandos. Busy Sam Smiths pub right by Trafalgar Square. Drink very reasonably priced for this pubs position (pint of cask ale and a pint of lager- £7.80!) along with very reasonably priced food as well, which was lovely. The upstairs section was closed for our visit but when open this would be a very spacious pub. Recommended!
J. O.
Only popped in for a couple of beers (in my case stout and raspberry beer) before attending stand up comedy show. Nice atmosphere and lovely compartments with benches that look like on a train. Lovely toiletries in the loo. Will visit again next time we're in London!
V. K.
Beautiful stop off point after a visit to The National Gallery. How they maintain such modest prices is beyond me. Sam Smith Brewery has such a great variety of lagers, stouts and ales to boot. First time trying Taddy Lager. My servers were all very nice. Fish and chips were lovely. Brilliant! Will be returning.
C. M. U.
Had a lovely lunch here, good food at good prices and would definitely go back again.

-Cosy
-Comfortable
-Decent service
-Food came quickly even with being busy
-Vegan food options (minimal choice though)
-Decent vegan burger
-Fairtrade tea

Is one of my fiance's favourite pubs to go to- they offer a range of Samuel Smith beers, ciders and lagers. I myself had the organic cherry beer, and it was delicious! Lovely ambient atmosphere, highly recommend!
J. D.
Run out of crisps and peanuts and two of the beers on tap. Upstairs closed due to lack of staff. Beer a lot more expensive than it used to be. Used to really like this pub - but now not what it once was.
A. D.
Disappointed as they don't have Prosecco or anything bubbly! 😕 so decided on a bottle of Rose' at a steep £25.50!!!! Would of gone somewhere else but just finished a late shift at work so not alot of time left. It is a nice pub and staff were friendly but too expensive!
P. B.
Great to find a traditional pub amongst all the high street chains. Very friendly service. Gluten free options including the chips. Gammon eggs and chips hit the spot for what we were looking for.
A. N.
In second floor very comfy place.
Tasty cocktails, Good beer. Good place to spend evening.
W. B.
Excellent atmosphere, with little booths making it quite intimate.
The food menu looks good, gastro with good value.
Solid veg burger, very good fries. Though there could be more of them, but hey, there always could be more fries. Ontologically.
Friendly service.
Bit disappointed they had no herbal tea.
T. T.
Nice pub. But could not find a wine list. Ordered a bottle of white wine and was charged 25 pounds. No wonder no wine list. Shocking price !
B. K.
If you want great historical pubs, then this is for you (like nearly all Samuel Smith pubs - great buildings with character). It is just across from Trafalgar Square. They have a great array of beers to choose from and at reasonable prices. Food looks great too. Large portions, but I focused on the beer :) Always very friendly staff
R. B.
I used to love going here and I'd not been for some time. At £5.50 a pint I wont be going again too soon! It used to be much more reasonably priced with good food upstairs but I'm not sure if the upstairs was even open when I recently visited. Samuel Smith's stout is to die for but at current prices it will only be the occasional pint I'm afraid.
D. x. D.
A quiet but welcoming pub had been before but this was the first time we had ordered food, its proper tasty. I'd suggest the burger 🍔 would defo bring more of my friends and family back here.😊
R. J.
Great Sam Smith's with lots of classic nooks for sitting. Though since the pandemic Sam Smith's has got really expensive! I expect it's to recoup lost earnings but it's a shame
C. B.
Beautiful old pub in the west end, popped in for a glass of wine before seeing a show. Polite staff and great atmosphere
N. H.
Great Samuel Smith's brewery beers. Good atmosphere 👍
T. A.
Traditional boozer.love the boothes and the beer is good too. Always go.to this pub when i am in london, amazing
N. S.
A great London Pub experience. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, with pub food available also. Trafalgar square at the doorstep. Easy to find in a great location. Recommended.
K. R.
Food is excellent not over priced great atmosphere check it out if you want food and drinks at prices that won't break the bank
B. O.
I'd briefly been in here before (up the staircase to the left for the upstairs lounge) when it was heaving with the theatre crowd and space was at a premium. However, it looked a nice place so I resolved to return some day.
I dropped in one Sunday night when it was much quieter and spotted a specials board at the bar, so ordered their steak and chips (with sauce!) and took a seat up at the bar with a pint until spotting a vacant table. No sooner had I decamped and got on-line, my steak arrived!
It wasn't particularly large, the peas were slightly dried out and I found the onion ring somewhat soggy... but the chips were dry and crisp and the peppercorn sauce set it all off nicely - it was reasonably-priced for what I had and went down fast (I was hungry).
Service was quick, effective and engaging - I enjoyed another beer before heading off for the night. Definitely more tranquil without the busy theatre crowd there and I'll certainly return again when in the area.
V. A.
Loved it .It was loud buzzing , with people ,we soaked up the atmosphere. We love old character pubs, beautifully kept.
D. H.
My wife and I went here 3 times while staying in the area. It was a pretty nice atmosphere to sit and eat. We got the fish and chips, pies and bangers and mash the three times we went. They also had sticky pudding. We liked it enough to go back several times especially since they are quite a bit cheaper than the other places in the area. The only problem is it’s pretty small and it can be tough to get a seat.
J. R.
Highly recommend the cider. The new barman is a wonderful addition, I was shocked to discover it was his first day, not just at the pub, but in London! Good work, I hope you continue impressing.
j. b.
Good pub and service no wifi so you have to socialize with each other! 😂
Food was good and did was able to split meal between 2 people without a fuss! Need to order at the bar!
W. J.
Great place to meet with friends either for a lunch or just for a chat with a pint of a tasty Beer. Food is very delicious. Nice and helpful staff. Just few steps from Trafalgar Square. As for me, place is worth visiting.
C. L.
One of my favourite pubs around. Service is always great, nice selection of spirits, prices reasonable for central london and atmosphere good.
D. C.
Always visit The Chandos when in London - however, it's more and more probable that the once cool & quirky atmosphere won't be there when you go as it's becoming more akin to any other city pub. Bit noisy and a bit...naff.
Bar staff were moody on my visit too!
That said, I will return.
g. h.
Brilliant Samuel smith pub. Great, friendly staff and wonderful atmosphere and great beer! Didn’t order but the food looked and smelled gods too!
M. D.
Walked past this pub thousands of times, today went in !Was pleasantly surprised very good selection of beers and spirits not your usual run of the mill brands, good staff and nice ambience 🍻👍
N. L. P.
This place is a lot of fun! The downstairs was hopping. We went upstairs for dinner, which came fast and was very good. We had toffee pudding for desert...it was so good. And the organic fruit beers...yum!
J. S.
Beautiful place, right beside Trafalgar Square.... Food is delicious and very reasonably priced and the staff are very friendly.
S. S.
Samuel Smith pubs... organic selection, authentic selection and a truly traditional English brand. Delicious, and the décor is full of heritage.
H. T.
Bar staff friendly, We have been coming here every time we visit London. Prices have gone up alot since covid so switched a £6.50 cider to a £5.00 pint
S. T. D.
Decent food that was quickly served, good choice of beers and largers. Just rather dark inside
G. C.
If you are out in London on a nice Sunday like me and my friend was, I highly recommend grabbing a nice, cold brew with some Fish and Chips.
The fish was a lightly battered Haddock served with fresh cut chips and garden peas on the side.
A simple yet effective British classic, served pretty much perfectly.
However, I would say bar staff may need to improve on mannerism, but it was a very hot day, so I cannot really blame them!
A. G. b. A. M.
Looking for a relaxing, living room-feel English pub in Trafalgar Square, London? Look no further. With a healthy selection of Samuel Smith's on draft, myriad others in bottle, wine, and an idyllic pub atmosphere, The Chandos has all you need for the perfect start to an evening out or a nightcap.
J. S.
Excellent food, lovely atmosphere and friendly staff, what more could you ask for?!
J. S.
Love the stalls concept for the best scampi and London ale
C. K.
Great pub in heart of London, no rip off prices. Good beer good price. Popular with all, tourists and Londoners
M. R.
A nice little spot in London to meet up with your favorite mates and enjoy a pint with conversation.
M. F.
We came here for one ale and a cider. Pub is just like any other proper British pub. Staff was welcoming and pub wasn't crowded with tourist. There was only two older gentlemen and us, but we were there by noon.
P. M.
Great friendly pub. I loved the atmosphere. Fair prices and good beers. I loved Samuel Smith's. Very good
V. D.
Really cosy and authentic atmosphere of a British pub. Reasonably priced and quite tasty! This is a perfect place to have some Steak & Ale pie in the heart of London! Mmm, delicious!
K.
Lively pub, lots of space upstairs and downstairs is fairly buzzing. A bit of a maze to get around but friendly enough staff and people
M. D.
Great boozer by Trafalgar Square. Excellent prices for Central London.
G. H.
Great pub, good prices. Always got a buzz and food was tasty.
R. S.
Chandos is a nice pub. It was busy on Friday afternoon and the boothes could have done with speedier cleaning and tidying.
T. A.
A lovely pub in a great location. It has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff but unfortunately the food is terrible.
T. H.
Really great pub in very central location. Reasonable prices for the area, and good selection of Sam Smith's beer and cider. Well worth popping in if you need a break from the hullabaloo of central London, but beware: it can get mighty busy!
R. G.
I like this bar. Lots of selection in drinks and some very unusual ones or gusset beers and ciders to choose from.
Bar has a few little booths and private areas to sit and chat with company.
Menu is the average British bar grub but not bad. Lots of space to stand or sit and not very cramped.
Always seems bright and spacious inside.
T. M.
Popped in for a quick drink nice clean place, reasonably priced and good selection. The barman was very friendly.
G. C.
Good pub in the heart of theatre land, with a different range of drinks not found in most pubs
J. H.
Wonderful, the food was excellent (scampi and chips)… hot and fresh … reasonable prices and fab service 👌😬👍🏻
T. R.
Fab little boozer with friendly staff and people and the beer is lovely. Really like the booths 🙌
P. L.
Sam Smith pubs are always lacking in atmosphere. The latest Joe Lycett review on them is pretty justified.
J. D.
Decent food, didn't need to prebook on a Thursday evening.
D. O.
Great Sam Smith's in the heart of all that is good about London. Has that booth vibe that only originality can pull off.
G. M.
Very nice pub, great staff. Will definitely be returning.
L. K. R.
This is a fantastic pub with its own great range of lagers, ales, stouts and ciders, not only on tap but in bottles. This pub has an old world style with great booths for those date nights or quite business meeting.
If your ever in or near charing Cross Road or Trafalgar Square you should pop in and have a pint!
J. G.
Average large London pub. Limited choice of beer not to my liking
A. B.
Busy with people enjoying themselves, and Samuel Smith Bitters are a delight. Get down the pub!🍻
M. P.
We loved to have a beer in this pub. The staff is very friendly and the order doesn't take long. A nice place to be and spend to your time with friends.
B. W.
Stopped off for a drink and pre theatre meal.Beer and cider at London prices, but good.My husband had a burger and it being Friday,I had fish and chips!Staff kept the bar and seating areas clean and were pleasant and helpful.
B. H.
Good atmosphere but busy bar area due to location it's popular
I. N.
This one is of my favourite pubs close to Trafalgar Sq. It has very comfortable chairs at the opera room upstairs. Friendly and joyful staff. Warming decorations and no phone signal. Mind the ceiling when you climb to the toilets upstairs. It has the Samuel Smith wheat organic lager which is one more of the reasons to hang around there. Fully recommend it.
M. C.
Lovely old fashioned pub with a unique choice of ales and lagers
U. L.
Real cozy atmosphere, and the fish and chips are great! Great selection of beers as well. A great place to stop and rest a little and feel British. They have a burning fireplace 🔥
M. d.
It has Timothy Taylor Landlord. It does not have football, nor does it have intrusive music. The staff are of course wonderful too.
R. P.
Great Sam Smith's pub in central London. If you manage to get one of the booths with a few mates then there isn't a better boozer in that part of London. Prices have gone up a little bit still probably one of the cheapest around Charing Cross. Highly recommended.
J. T.
Excellent pub. Food the good at a reasonable price. Comfortable and clean. Right in the heart of lots of theatres etc.
G. B.
Pub. Positive:location, atmosphere, etc. Negative : brewery chain owner humphrey.
C. S.
Crowded. Not a fan of John Smith's. But otherwise, a well-run, efficient establishment.
T. T.
A large yet charming casual pub set over ground and first floors with mixed drinking and informal dining upstairs. The wooden booths on the ground floor are a must try.
C. M.
Really classy Sam Smith's pub. Wonderful decor.
S. P. O. D.
We’ve been here and photographed a lots of clients here as a local photography company and we think that The Chandos Pub is a lovely place to chill with your friends and have a drink. Definitely recommend.
d. s.
Good food and beers. Well organised staff. Attentive and efficient. Very popular place.
T. B.
Very cozy pub serving great beer
H. M.
Atmosphere is so calming and it is beautiful inside. Good food except for meat included dish
A. G.
It's a really nice pub . Just a shame the beer is sam smiths only
d. b.
Excellent little pub...had a great night
P. H.
Good pub near Trafalgar Square / Charing Cross.
M. E.
Food is good standard pub grub, service was abit off but otherwise perfectly fine. Nice that they've got their own alternative stout to replace Guinness.
Has pub booths for those wishing to keep their 2 metres.
A. R.
Super rapid service. Lovely organic lager.
P. L.
A nice quiet place for a very good pint
A. H.
Chandos is very nice and with the big selection of Sam Smith's beers it is a must go place. Always give one of the cask beers a try!
S. B.
Not been here for years but still has that old school pub charm.
P. B.
Nice pub in central London. Lovely building character. Food available but we did not try any. Some drinks are reasonably priced; others are expensive. It can get rammed in there, particularly as tourists visit it. It's a Samuel Smith's brewery owned venue, so the drinks are branded accordingly. I am not a big fan of the draught cider and much prefer the bottled organic variety! Some of the staff were friendly.
I. “. S.
Still a great multifloor venue and a good selection of Samuel Smith beers. I highly recommend the extra stout.
b. h.
Good service, good experience and really good value considering its central London
E. L.
It just doesn't get better, this is an awesome pub. Great value, great premises. Bang on the edge of Trafalgar Square. Really helpful staff and if you can get a booth, the best place to wile away the time in the afternoon
p. w.
Nice pub with friendly manager and good ale.
A. M.
Friendly service and well-kept Sam Smith's Yorkshire Bitter.
A. J. M.
Not unlike other such ravitaillement establishments in the centre of London, expect the usual cacophony of noises in a very busy pub. The atmosphere is great and will set you in the mood for whatever fun you have laid out. Plenty of pleasant and polite staff to make sure you don't have to wait long to be served. As a bonus, it is certainly one of the cheapest for drinks in the area, with good quality beverages and their own artisan brews. Be prepared to stand if all the tables are taken, it's all part of the experience. Enjoy.
A. W.
Only one real ale on tap. Quite a selection of keg beers and lagers. Didn't try the food. Expensive.
N. A.
A nice little pub with cheap prices on London-standards. Friendly staff. Not a great variety of beers as they don’t sell well known beers like Guinness or Newcastle Brown Ale. However, I still loved it there.
J. P.
Fantastic, excellent service Fantastic food and drinks.
J. C.
Wanted to find a place to have authentic fish and chips after spending a whole day in the city. This place did not disappoint. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic pub with great food and great selection of beer.
B. S.
Cheap and cheerful! Very central, lovely booths where you can have a bit privacy. Alcohol is much cheaper than everywhere around. Absolutely rammed at 6pm on a Friday, with a great atmosphere. Upstairs there is more seating and you can get good. Sausages look nice.
J. R.
Friendly service and excellent food! We spent our Thanksgiving there and had a great time!
M. E.
I love Samuel Smith's pubs and beers so I'd find it hard not to like this pub. The location is so convenient and central, yet it feels brilliantly like you've traveled back in time to a better era for pubs. The beer is great, the service is standard for London (fairly impersonal but fast and professional), and the prices are very reasonable for the location.
J. W.
Great pub if you are looking for something central which isn't a rip off (I love Sam Smiths pubs). I first went after the anti trump rally in the summer, and then again the other day after going to the ballet! All in all, both good experiences. Gets very busy and might be difficult to get a seat, so better for a drink with friends than if you're looking for a quiet Friday night date experience.
V. K.
A very cozy pub. We had a variety of meals and all of them were as expected. Have to mention especially the fish and chips, which were superb. There is a selection of beers from lagers to ales. The only cons is we were not able to find the price for beers though they were slightly cheaper than expected.
J. N.
Lively pub with good atmosphere.
P. P.
My favourite pub, always a treat to go here
J. B.
Simple pub; serves food. Part of the Samuel Smith chain so only serves own-brand drinks- a good selection of ales, lagers, wine & soft drinks. Comfortable old-fashioned interior with booths, stools and wood panelling. Often busy but usually not too loud or rowdy. Very good prices compared with other nearby bars.
B. M.
Have to give it four stars for the booths. One of the more authentic of experiences.
Otherwise, like other reviews, felt like the staff was not too keen on being there!
c.
Good pub
Sadly the Sam Smiths wheat beer was all gone proving of course how good it is.
The organic larger was a fine alternative
C. S.
Very clean pub with toilets to match. Great old school feel and atmosphere. Have visited this pub many times in the past, and always bring new friends to it.
Food upstairs is quality pub grub, with a good selection.
A real hidden gem.
A. P. M.
Great pub to have a couple of beers (or many) with your friends. The staff is very kind and friendly and they make you feel like home. Also, the prices are quite cheap considering the area.
I've been a lot of times at this venue and it's frequented by people of all ages and types, so it's an interesting place to visit if you're tired of your local pub.
B. T.
Nice traditional pub. No music as it's a Sam Smiths venue. Can get loud at times especially when the after work people are in.
P. C. K. L.
Really nice pub and drinks are cheap and afforable compared to other pubs in central London, they have friendly staff and a nice little area to play darts. Would highly recommend their organic beer, it is great tasting, refreshing, crisp and has a clean taste. Very spacious pub and has a lovely up stair area. Has great decor all around the pub inside and outside.
M. D.
It's a nice pub with friendly staff just off Trafalgar Square. Lots of seating with some semi-private booths if you can manage to get one! A little pricey, but what you'd expect for a pint in downtown London.
D. O.
Good old Samuel Smiths pub. Same as many in the area.
D. D.
Big fan of this pub. It is well located near Trafalgar square and Leicester square. Bit more expensive then other Sam Smith's in london but I guess you are paying for the location. The layout of the pub is well thought out making it easy to find a place to sit/perch with your friends.
L. M.
Nice pub. Gets busy and vivid.
P. W.
Probably my favourite pub.
Great selection of drinks and I've never had a bad meal there. And it's cheap for London prices.
I really enjoy the fact that none of their products are advertised but that might just be me.
Would recommend the wheat beer.
I. R.
Had a vegan burger and a cider.
D. B.
Great Sam Smith's pub in the centre of London. Very good value because they brew all their own drinks (don't expect branded beers etc.) but the drinks are still very good. Can get pretty busy in the evenings after work, but the upstairs area is normally a bit quieter. The staff are usually pretty friendly.
R. B. B.
It had been a few years since I was last there and some things have changed. Nothing too much thankfully. The beer is still awesome! I dare say the stout knocks Guinness out of the park. It's a Samuel Smith's pub selling their own beers. The beers a £1 or so dearer than it was but at least now you can pay by card. I've always found a cheery Australian behind the bar. I didnt eat there this time but it's always been great in the past. Situated a short walk from Charing cross station.
T. E.
Good food. Upstairs dining room is quiet and pleasant. Steak and ale pie was very good. Ale is excellent as always in Sam Smith's pubs. Fruit beers and stouts are highly recommended.
S. B.
Gorgeous building with old opera posters and the Opera Room upstairs now the restaurant. Sam Smith's pub so great drinks and good value. Excellent for spending the evening catching up with friends or for a stop off before or after the theatre or shopping. Menu is standard pub fare served quickly nothing spectacular but does the job well. Has veggie/vegan options as well as fish and chips, pie and mash etc.
J. W.
Prices increased since last visit, over £5 for Taddy lager
G. E.
Great food & the little cosy booths are so unique for this traditional pub
R. D.
Classic pub food (meat pie, fish and chips, etc.) generally about 10 pounds per plate. Great variety of local beer with helpful staff to direct you. Lively pub atmosphere downstairs but a quieter lounge style setting upstairs. Food only available upstairs unless you have a disability.
D. P.
A good pint and great atmosphere
D. S.
This is a very nice bar with a well-mannered interior, where food is served in the upstairs dining room. They've done an excellent job of placing seating in lots of fun little corners, which create 1-2 person seating, ideal for a solo traveler. My chicken caesar salad and pint of beer were both excellent. As others have mentioned, the staff is very friendly and kind.
Z. D.
This place is my favourite pub in central London. The drink prices are just unbeatable, the food is pretty good, and the staff are... usually really friendly and helpful. Some behind the bar aren't quite as nice or friendly, which is a shame.
The drinks are cheap as they only stock their own alternatives to spirits, but generally they taste great and there's plenty to choose from! There's good music, a great crowd and the location is excellent. Plus the decor is exactly what you'd expect of a town pub. Gotta love a cheeky Chandos! :P
E. D.
Great location near to Trafalgar Square but still a pub with plenty of seats. The wine selection is very poor however but as a decent London boozer for a cozy drink it ticks the boxes. No outside space as such, but people tend to spill out onto the street on a sunny day. Lots of little 'snugs' or booths to sit in if you are coming with a small group.
E. M.
Good choice of drinks. Upstairs is always quieter than downstairs.
M. S.
Nice pub to go in the sweltering heat of the summer and if you can get a seat directly under the great air conditioning they have in the pub you can cool down! Some ales are reasonably priced at less than £4 a pint, which is good for central London, but cider is nearer to £5 a pint (July 2018).
D. H.
Good pub serving Sam Smith's beers. Old brewery bitter was on form and at £3-40 a pint it was great value. Food was good but portions were small for the price they charged.
K. R.
Nice pub, it was the third pub we entered because there is absolutely no place to sit, here we waited about 15 min until there was a small table available, it's self service so it's up to you to find a spot and get yourself a drink.
Here you can find good variety of Samuel Adam's draft beers from ale to lager to wheat, everything is organic, prices are 4.9 pounds at most for a pint. We ordered also fish and chips for 11.9 pounds, nice size and tasty fish (kod fish), took also gin and tonic for 4.45 pounds. There was no music, but in my short experience in London pubs if there is music there is people screaming at each other so their conversation can overcome the music, so maybe the lack of music was for the best. Good location near Covent garden.
J.
Despite walking past this place a million times , I thought it was just another tourist trap. But it’s not! Firstly, the bar staff deserve a medal as there are quite a few tourists who they are endlessly patient with, but for those of us who live here, the beer is exceptionally affordable, lots of lovely cozy booths (a bit of a wait though as it’s BUSY) and a great vibe with no pushy bouncers or city types ruining your evening. Cannot recommend enough.
G. R.
This is a useful pub rather than a great one. The usual selection of drinks for a samuel Smith's pub. The downstairs is always busy but the upstairs has a good fire and comfortable seating.
R. B.
Given its location, right in the heart of London, the Chandos is remarkably cheap. It has a good selection of beers, ciders and shorts and a fairly comprehensive food menu. There is also plenty of room to sit. A great place to go for a drink.
R. G.
Great London pub, reasonable prices for the capital. Good selection of beers (try their wheat beer!). Only real down-side, bar staff usually from the other side of the planet and couldn't fun a bar if they tried!
J. B.
Went in after a rally outside downing Street so it was very mixed crowd. Very busy pub with some very nice seating space if you can get a seat. Good beers on tap and a very fair price considering its London.
G.
Love this place, right in the center of London but with decent price beer and a good selection. Their organic larger is very good and they have some good ales also. Check out the upstairs it's a little hidden but when downstairs is packed it's another option. Certain a go to place for me.
n. w.
Extremely reliable central london pub. It’s a Sam Smiths establishment which means (relatively) affordable drinks of a good quality, but also means not masses of choices or the most on trend tap selection.
It’s big enough that even at rush hour with a little patience you should eventually find a seat, and if you want to stand outside it’s nice to be right on Trafalgar Square.
My only problem with this and all Sam Smiths pubs, an institution I otherwise admire, is the crisps. I don’t remember the name of the brand of crisps they stock, but they are utterly repulsive. I mean beyond horrible. I think they must be made using rapeseed oil or something drastically different to most crisps.
Bring your own crisps, for crying out loud
O. D.
One of my favourite pubs in all of London. Can get very busy and crowded in the evenings, but if you can snag one of the coveted booths, you'll be cosy and comfortable. As a Sam Smith Brewery pub, you'll find a range of drinks exclusive to that brewer (the Pure Brew Lager is a particular favourite of mine) and the best value-per-drink available in Central London/The West End. One note of warning - kiss your mobile/cell phone signal goodbye for the duration of your visit!
M. A.
This pub pre-Covid was always overflowing with punters. Now you can actually get through to the door. However, a bit disappointing because there wasn't a good selection of beers and they didn't even have Jack Daniels!!! Toilets were appalling.
J. H.
Very disappointing sticky toffee pudding, ( the sponge was mushy and very thin tasteless custard) sadly, nowhere near the same standard as the same items at the white horse, opposite the Gielgud Theatre in Piccadilly.
We tried this for a change, but will be returning to the other Sam Smith pub.
It is however, very convenient to station and great for a drink, lovely old world charm.
S. N.
Being a Sammy Smith's this is typically cheaper than other pubs in the area. Don't be put off by the lack of naff lagers like Stella etc, it has a good range of Sammy Smith beers. It's a nice traditional looking pub too. Can be very busy at times though.
J. M.
Great beer, good fish and chips and charming pub!
A. M.
We looked for a place near our hotel off Trafalgar Square and took a shot at The Chandos. In spite of my initial impression that it sounded faintly as if it might be Greek to me, we trooped upstairs to the restaurant for dinner. (As with many pubs, it's drinks only downstairs, meals upstairs.) The protocol is to order at the bar, get a number for your table, take your drinks and tableware, the wait for the staff to bring the food. The menu includes typical British cuisine such as chicken, leek, and potato pie; and bangers and mash. But there are also burgers and some more international flavors too. The Canadian young women behind the bar were helpful in guiding beer and menu choices. The food was brought promptly. My chicken pie was good and my husband's lamb shank tender and mild. The wheat beer recommended to me was excellent and my husband enjoyed the lager he chose. The meal for both of us with the two beers was about £24. It's not five star dining, but it's very good pub food. I won't associate The Chandos with Greek food after our nice meal. (Although come to think of it, I haven't seen much Greek food in Central London.)
R. K.
I go there every year after the Remembrance parade. Their own bitter is great at £3.50 a pint, and the atmosphere is electric. Also very handy if you want to nip out to Trafalgar Square.
S. B.
Great pub with some good beers and big enough to have a decent atmosphere while still allowing social distancing. Cheaper than other pubs too!
J. B.
A typical Sam Smith's pub in London. The location does however mean it gets very very busy. The booths are great if you can get one. The food is average at best. I'd recommend going to another Sam Smith's slightly farther afield if time permits.
R. C.
Not been in here for awhile, hasn't changed much but was a bit loud.
M. P. (. P.
Mega selection of beers at very reasonable prices (for London) and in a central location. The pub is set over two doors with plenty of seating and standing room, and for those warm summer evenings you can step outside and enjoy your drink.
E. P.
If it wasn't so busy all the time, it would be wonderful! Being a Sammy Smith's pub, you get good beer for quite cheap (in central London). It's in a good location for all the tourist spots, and I really like the layout of the place - upstairs is spacious and has that great traditional pub feel. If you get there at the right time and get a seat, you could easily spend an entire evening here and have a great time.
B. N. S.
Nice pub with great drinks and good food. Loved the atmosphere and the old world charm. It's a great place to hang out with buddies. The staff is very courteous and helpful.
M. W.
Absolutely lovely place bang in the middle of London. Very reasonable beer prices. Great spot to meet up with friends in town. Good seating area upstairs. Usually very busy though.
L. P.
Holds some sentimental memories and it hasn't changed which is the best part, always feel welcome and at home, love this pub
D. L.
Great traditional pub. Friendly staff and good atmosphere.
K. N.
I'm sad they have swept away the spit & sawdust, but I'm glad I popped in.
(Thank God it survived 2o2o)
B. P.
I've been coming to the Chandos since the early 1980s with my friends, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. It has always been a home from home, warm, friendly and inviting with good (and relatively cheap) beer and a decent selection of well presented and prepared food of the "pub grub" variety. Prices were reasonable and the wait was short.
Alas, from our experience at the weekend something has changed. I suspect a new and aspirational chef in the kitchen. Choices narrowed, prices raised, wait trebled and portions shrunk. Not good, Chandos...
It's sad. What was a central London oasis is on the way to becoming a barren watering hole, just like the others.
T. R.
The bar is dark and old fashioned. Lots of seats which is a plus in an area like Trafalgar Square. Good prices again were a plus for an area like Trafalgar Square but the food was bland and arrived within 5 mins of ordering it so clearly isn’t freshly made. Asked for a Irish whiskey and the whiskey was totally clear, l have never seen a totally clear Irish whiskey before - it was absolutely disgusting. Price and location a plus but if you want a nice lunch spend a bit more and go somewhere else.
J. C.
A tiny bit of calm amongst the hustle and bustle outside. Can very rarely get a seat but it's a nice old fashioned Sam Smith's pub that makes me think all pubs were once like this a long time ago. It used to be really good value but they've recently put the prices up so it's the usual price for a pint in London. Definitely the place to go for a breather whilst doing all that Christmas shopping anyway!
B. E.
Upstairs Opera bar, accessed from outside opposite National Portrait gallery, is Betty good. Excellent Sam Smith's cask bet and good pub food menu. Nice and old fashioned. Friendly staff. No muzak.
P. W.
Discovered this pub on a trip to the theatre. Very impressed with the decor and the friendliness of the staff. Also, the prices were very un-central London like. Just £6.50 for a pint and a glass of wine!!! Highly recommended.
M. M.
Nice pub with good selection of beers. It was also very clean inside the pub and also toilets clean for a busy place. Found it quite funny when my mate started getting a little back massage while having a pint for a tenner. I'd go back👍
A. C.
Great location and food. A fine addition to the arsenal that is Sam Smiths! This pub is only a stones throw away from trafalgar square but you wouldn't think it when you get inside. Not over crowded, reasonably priced for the food and beer, and the staff were really pleasant.
S. B.
Interesting experience. Never been to a place that charges £5.02 for a gin and tonic then gets annoyed when you present a note. The drink was more ice then anything else, wouldn't rush back here.
S. K.
Busy as a Friday evening, but efficient bar staff served quickly. Yay to them. Usual choice of drinks available for a Sam Smiths pub, so all good. Marvellous!
E. J. B.
How could you even think of giving less than 5 stars. Historical place with a sparkling and lively atmosphere, this is just the perfect place if you want to get a taste of the Londoner vibe. The space is not abundant, but if you are willing to wait a bit or squeeze close to strangers you will still be able to enjoy yourself, plus you might even get to talk with customers and staff alike.
You can't say you've been to London if you have not drank an ale or two here at The Chandos.
A. J.
Not friendliest of staff and definitely no Christmas feel.
J. M.
Right in the corner of Trafalgar Square. Good value well-kept beer. Comfortable booths to sit in. (Serves food though I've personally not tried it). Great pub (but don't tell anybody. I don't want it any more crowded!!)
P. L.
A very typical British pub. The atmosphere is very lively, the food and drinks served are nice, and the couches are very comfortable. All in all a very good experience!
Central location, we often come here to have a drink or more before a show or a concert nearby.
H. M.
We often come here for lunch and we have not been disappointed yet. Chilli con carne was good and the hunter chicken excellent. Ideal for a concert at St Martin in the Field. We like to wonder to or from Seven Dials. Food is never too pricey and staff are friendly and efficient. Clean throughout.
J. N.
Everything is up to scratch. Lovely staff and lovely beer.
C. G.
Great if you go upstairs via the separate entrance outside into the opera lounge bar. Good snack and meal menu and we sat by a cosy fire. Couldn't have Shiraz, only average cabernet but good Samuel Smiths bitter which is really what you go for. Friendly staff and efficient at clearing tables. Nice atmosphere and worth a visit if you want a pub other than Wetherspoons near Trafalgar Square.
I. D.
A Sam Smith pub. A yorkshire brewery that brew/serve all its own drinks. No Stella/Smirnoff here. Cheap tho, especially if buying a round. Great pint of Old Brewery bitter served the northern way (great for a northerner in London who prefers a 'white top' on his beer). Good session lager and spirit selection. No brands so no spiced rum tho (minor point) 🍻😆
J. S.
Good selection of beers and bar food shame upstairs closed when visited as that is great
M. S.
Went in after a show at the Garrick Theatre, was very busy and very loud, however drinks price reasonable considering it was in the middle of London!
C. B.
The best pub if you want a cheap drink. They craft their own drinks, and that is why they are so cheap. It is always busy, good typical decoration of a traditional English pub. It has two floors, but arrive there by 5 if you want to get a seat.
C. H.
Downstairs is crowded, cramped and horrible. You can never hear yourself let alone anyone else. And that's a Tuesday night. However it's saving grace is a pretty good upstairs space called the opera room which is great. I'd rate the upstairs 4/5 * and the downstairs 1/2* hence my 3 star rating. Upstairs is more relaxed and welcoming, less crowded and generally a good place to go
A. B.
Great pub to drink and talk! Didn't have food on the first floor so cannot comment on that. However the crisps were very good to have on the side with a pint.
D. M.
Great bar staff (superb upstairs), double story, good seating for plenty of guests and excellent prices on drinks. Would reccommend to anybody that wants that classical pub at a great price.
J. L.
I've been a fan of Samuel Smiths since I first tried it over 20 years ago. I'm also a fan of music recorded by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. When I planned my first-ever trip to London, I saw that St. Martin in the Fields was within walking distance of my hotel; therefore, a trip there went on my list of things to do. After the lunchtime concert, I was looking for a place to eat and discovered the Chandos. A Samuel Smith pub near my planned destination was a definite bonus. I ate upstairs, which is a cool spot. The service was good and the staff were friendly. The beer was excellent (as expected) and they had some beers that are not available in the U.S. The food was also excellent (I had fish and chips). I've been back to London since then and a trip to St. Martin in the Fields along with lunch at the Chandos are must-do's. Every time I've been there the service, food, and drink have been excellent.
L. G.
Great olde style pub in a central location - definitely recommend the upstairs section, it's not busy, has quick service and lovely decour. A good way to get away from the central London crowds and enjoy a relaxed pint. Very clean and tidy too.
D. F.
Very, very busy pub. Be prepared for a wait if you want to sit down at peak times. Upstairs bar was just as crowded, but slightly less noisy.
J. K.
Very well decorated samuel smith pub. Excellent beer for very little cost. This means it has plenty of seating and two floors. The upstairs is for drink and food, while the downstairs is for drinking only. No wifi or cell signal at all.
J. L.
You can never go wrong with a Sam smiths pub. They serve decent beer for sensible prices. Don’t expect to find you big brands here but then again who needs them when you can grab 3 prints for a tenner in central London
o. o.
Cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. Food is great, I had a steak and kidney pie with mash and it was lovely. After walking around Covent Garden, it's nice to have a pit stop here before going on to the national gallery.
R. P.
This pub is on two levels with the Opera Bar upstairs being for those who want to dine. It is almost opposite the National Portrait Gallery and is very easy to find.
Being a Sam Smiths pub it has a wide variety of their own beers which are very good and does not sell Guiness, their stouts are wonderful so have these instead. The food is reasonable, similar to Weathersppons in quality, but the last time I was there with others the fish and chips seemed to be minnows which was dissapointing.
J. D.
Traditional English pub, and how many places can you find a £3.40 pint these days? One of the few pubs in London selling Samuel Smith brewed beer, and the value is unreal! Highly recommended
S. S.
Nice pub environment, very old school. Fair prices for a beer (paid £3.20 for a pint of Samuel Smith bitters). Friendly staff and quick service to be so busy.
J. B.
Visited this pub in November last year, I'm from Tadcaster myself and I came down to London to visit some old school friends. A group of us came to this pub, Was so strange walking in and seeing loads of pictures of Tadall over the walls but it was nice though. Good pint of Taddy Lager in this pub. Would love to visit again sometime soon!
W. B.
A lovely and cosy place decorated in traditional style, perfect for those who want to taste the authenticity of the British cuisine. Very tasty food with a wide selection of dishes. Staff very polite and friendly.
D. A.
Cheap bar if you're on a low budget in downtown London. Great selection of beers. Careful, it has a very distinct smell of rotten barrel when you get in, but for the price.... you'll get use to it.
H. B.
Great location and a great place to stop in for a quick lunch. The food came quickly, hot and massive portions. I loved my pie and my partner loved his Fish and Chips.
G. H.
A true London pub. One of my favourite. Beer truly beer. Best pint of bitter. Prices as true as the beer. A must if you want to know what havin pint in London is all about. Cheers!!!!!
M. G.
Very cozy environment and warm atmosphere. A wide range of beers.
V. S.
Visited the Chandos on Sunday 6th .The London Pearlie Kings and Queens Harvest Festival in St Martin's in the Fields next door had been on and they all were having a drink afterwards .
Great atmosphere and Pub had good selection of drinks .Sadly no disabled toilet and stairs to cope with .Not very acceptable in 2019.
Nice Decor and staff helpful otherwise .
S. B.
Favorite spot for a very lovely pint of bitter!
L. M.
Love this little pub with delicious organic craft beers and hearty food. I always come back for more.
O. T.
I went there around the time they were preparing to close. Well, the bartender didn't treat me very well, the young guy, but then it came this lady who saved the night, she really should be promoted or something, a true professional. After the same guy came to our table and said they were closing in 15 minutes, I would be ok with that if he would had said this only for me and my friends. I felt disrespected once he knew we weren't British. I've been at The Chandos before and always been treated well but last night it was quite a disappointment for me.
d. h.
A proper traditional pub that serves a superb pint of Samual Smiths. Does good food too but cleverly keeps the eaters away from the drinking area. Nothing worse than people eating around you when you are enjoying your pint. Rare find.
A. O.
Nice little pub that's reasonable cheap for its location. Great customers service.
A. F.
I love the Chandos. Slap bang in the middle of London Town, next to St Martin-in-the-Fields and still reasonably priced.
For some reason, you can hear a lot of Aussie accents behind the bar and I have been coming here for over 15 years. But I am never bothered about that.
Food is reasonably priced too for where it is and pretty good too. Don't expect haute couisine but it is quite good.
j. A.
A good location, and plenty of space, yet it still somehow feels a bit cramped. The upstairs is good if you can get a seat, and the beers are all fine. Not a favoured haunt, but a good backup when the favoured haunts are full or too far away.
J.
Despite walking past this place a million times , I thought it was just another tourist trap. But it’s not! Firstly, the bar staff deserve a medal as there are quite a few tourists who they are endlessly patient with, but for those of us …
A. P. M.
Great pub to have a couple of beers (or many) with your friends. The staff is very kind and friendly and they make you feel like home. Also, the prices are quite cheap considering the area. …
B. N. S.
Nice pub with great drinks and good food. Loved the atmosphere and the old world charm. It's a great place to hang out with buddies. The staff is very courteous and helpful.
C. S.
Simple london boozer. Always packed. Lacking much soft drink choice
D. H.
Good pub serving Sam Smith's beers. Old brewery bitter was on form and at £3-40 a pint it was great value. Food was good but portions were small for the price they charged.
D. S.
Very nice staff! have a lot of expertise and knowledge of the drinks they serve. The pub itself is very characteristic and cozy
N. A.
A nice little pub with cheap prices on London-standards. Friendly staff. Not a great variety of beers as they don’t sell well known beers like Guinness or Newcastle Brown Ale. However, I still loved it there.
A. B.
Great pub to drink and talk! Didn't have food on the first floor so cannot comment on that. However the crisps were very good to have on the side with a pint.
S. P.
Sam Smiths tend to charge consistent prices across the UK ... so your pint in here should be no more expensive than in the depths of Yorkshire. Nice friendly pub with a row of little wood-panelled snugs ideal for a secret tryst.
A. W.
Great pub! Even though it's in Central London and so close to the main sights, it's not super busy and a great place for taking a break
N. W.
The seemingly recent refurbishment has done wonders for this place, the ground floor bar used to be particularly murky but now it's delightfully brighter without being too bright. The new decor has also pleasingly avoided the cookie cutter approach and is warm and inviting. Drinks selection is your standard Sam Smiths fare, decent enough.
J. W.
Always buyer but the beer is good and the atmosphere friendly. The alpine Lager is worth a good if you don't want a hangover and it's cheap...
A. M.
Rustic, comfy, cozy pub like you can find a lot of in London.
D. E.
Good price beer and a nice selection. If you are after a conventional drink in a no thrills location, these are the perfect pubs. If you are after an upmarket cocktail and fine wine place you might be disappointed.
J. G.
This delightfully wooden pub in the heart of London is a classic Sam Smith find, meaning it's a bargain as it only sells its own brand name drinks (don't expect to find your typical power pints here). The clientele gets exceptionally colourful at nights and weekends as it's a popular place for the theatre crowd to hangout at
R. W.
If you like a Sam smiths pub this is ideal. Spacious, plenty of seating, pretty rapid service from the staff. Easy pub to stand about and get drunk in. Maybe a bit loud if you want a quiet one.
S. K.
Before Sam Smiths raised their prices a year or so ago this was a great little place, however now it's just as busy but without the cheap prices. You might as well just pay a little bit more and try and find somewhere you actually get to sit down / don't have people constantly barging into you if you stand up.
Does have a hard to spot upstairs, but this can quite often inexplicably be even busier. If it's a nice day people pour out onto the street, so save yourself a 20 minute wait at the bar and a few quid by just grabbing a can from the off licence opposite ;)
K. B.
Great place but not a proper old style pub as suggested, or as I remember as a young South Londoner. This is far too civilised. No mouthy landlady to put you in your place, no woodshavings, cribbage, or singalongs. But those are bygone times I suppose, as much as I miss them.
However, Chandos is a charming place, with a uniquely British vibe that happens to be close to many London landmarks. It is very favourably priced, and offers prompt and attentive service. I will be returning.
M. E.
Upstairs service and environment very nice. Great food. Sam Smith ales very good and a great value. Really enjoyed everything so close to central sights. Not a tourist trap at all.
O. B.
Great choice of their own beers, with very very affordable prices, I've been going to other pubs near by, I won't anymore.
f. p.
Great pub in the area, a lot of space and relatively good value drinks, one of the few places in London you can get a pint under a fiver. Can definitely get busy in the evenings
F. Q.
Just off Trafalgar Square, this Sam Smith's pub is a perfect meeting place for groups of friends that doesn't seem to have changed in all the years I've been coming here. If you look up, you'll see a huge moving statue of a barman opening up a beer barrel. Inside, you'll find upstairs is more relaxed with sofas, but downstairs is the real character of the place with original high-backed wooden booths, decorative tiling, stained glass amber coloured leaded windows and well-worn floorboards that have no doubt had many drink spilled onto them. It can get crowded especially if there are events in Trafalgar Square, but that adds to the atmosphere of the place.
B. M.
Surprisingly good food
Was not expecting much from a pub right beside a very popular tourist attraction, the the service was friendly, relatively quick and in a very nice atmposhere, different from you usual pub atmosphere.
I ordered some sort of fish pie. Was expecting a freshly thawed something with french fries and was pleasently suprised by what appeared to be freshly cooked healthy meal with fresh vegetables. Was delicious.
I'd go back.
A. W.
Great fresh beer, decent food and very nice traditional decor. If there's one downside it's that or can be very VERY busy. No music is a plus for me.
M. G.
Good place for a pint. Reasonable priced as well.
T. T.
Great place laced with my youth and great music.
A. W.
A smashing traditional pub; polished wood, gleaming brass and private booths. Friendly staff and a good eaterie upstairs which is understandably busy. A quiet oasis from the nearby Trafalgar Square. I regularly call in when in London.
S. D.
Legendary pub in the heart of London's Trafalgar Square
N. W.
This is your very traditional old man's pub. It's all hand-pulled, cheap pints and fish and chips. The pub itself is also very traditional-looking, and actually offers a surprising amount of room for you, to stand at least, which means that given it's extremely central location, it usually doesn't get overcrowded.
R. J.
Nice enough of you can get a seat. Nonstandard lagers, so you may need to try something new.Weekends of course crazy busy and noisy but a good starting point for a night out
K. D.
Long wait to be served at the bar. However, I was compelled to write a review because the fish and chips I had today was the best I've ever had ... and I've eaten a lot of fish and chips.
B. O.
This seems to be one of those pubs you either love or hate - I love it and usually call in for a pint when in the area - friendly staff, well kept beers (although there are better locally), good atmosphere, interesting interior and you can usually find a seat - what more can you ask? Above average.
I. J.
Rest range of organic beers and good food but it does get busy. Upstairs very different vibe from downstairs and nice little dartboard tucked away downstairs in very corner.
P. M.
Good Weissenbier and Organic Lagers as well as Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter. Great location off Trafalgar Square. It is very popular and can be very crowded but you can overflow upstairs.
s. l.
Great atmosphere. Only downer was 2 women asked for a glass of sparkling wine. None available. Polite staff. Historic setting. Lovely.
M. P.
Nice place to stand outside and watch the very odd people go by. Alpine lager is £2.50 a pint :) There is also a large upstairs area with comfy seats.
A. B.
Service good. Drinks same as always. But didn't feel especially same from a COVID point of view.
D. E.
Love going here, great staff, great prices xxxx
C. A.
Staff ,where very accommodating in tune with their customers requests.
Myself, all so my best friend.
I will be Recommending you quaint establishment forthwith. Thank you
Miss.ColletteSmith
As I enjoyed my Birthday
D. S.
Very nice staff! have a lot of expertise and knowledge of the drinks they serve. The pub itself is very characteristic and cozy
E. C.
Great Sam Smiths pub in an iconic location beside Trafalgar Square and a short walk from Covent Garden. Often busy but if you're lucky enough to find an upstairs table the views are an added reward.
R. M. P.
Service was a bit slow but I do love the Sam smiths wheat beer. Only downside is it wasn't available on draft.
G. W.
Nice organic beer selection. Can't believe last food orders are 5pm on a Friday night though! Minus 2 stars for that.
D. M.
Good pub, booze downstairs, food up. Good bangers and mash though the wine menu is somewhat limited. Red, white and rose. The red was decent though I have no idea what it was.
S. H.
The Chandos is my favorite pub in London. The fittings are largely 19th century, and there upstairs is often a pleasant refuge from the clamor and noise of London. The pies at the Chandos are very good. I highly reccomend the steak and kidney pie. The staff are very nice. If you're looking fur something lively, the downstairs is a good place to have pints and meet new people-all within a stone's throw of Trafalgar Square.
S. T.
Sam.smith pub with great little seating alcoves nice atmosphere
P. T.
Over priced but nice beers
B. H.
Great pub right off of the Main Street. Upstairs has great seating and exactly what you would think of for a London pub. Friendly with tourists as well!
P. S.
Really lovely place to chill and enjoy a drink after London site seeing. Upstairs there are plenty of seating spaces to enjoy food and a drink. Just on the edge of Trafalgar square.
M. A.
Good food, nice beer 🍻
J. S.
Good for a catch up with friends or a pint after work. It's quite busy and yet usually you can still magically find a little nook there.
Decent choice of beers.
J. T.
Standard Sam Smiths pub, nice interior, cheap pints. However the upstairs is infested with mice, so I wouldn't recommend eating there.
J. T.
Conveniently situated pub in Trafalgar Square. Quite homely if not basic.
R. R.
Good, basic, well priced food and drink, usually with a free table despite incredibly central location. Don't expect a fancy night out, but it's an excellent central meeting place.
S. T.
Nice pub, we drank upstairs. Ridiculously bright lighting. Sort it out guys, would be a really good place if you did. Good Sam Smith's beer and many others.
D. S.
If this place wasn't smack dab in the middle of a very expensive area, yet still dispensing reasonably priced pints of reasonably good ale, it would get a 3 star rating. However, under the circumstances, it deserves the bump to 4.
V.
The best beer, cider. And other drinks. Very good prices for London. Professional barmen. Always coming here and recommend for everyone.
A. F.
Quite dark and old fashioned inside. You could probably describe it as traditional and atmospheric, but maybe also just as average and grubby. The barman when I visited was a bit unhelpful, and didn't say much, but he got our order right in the end. Service was fairly quick to be fair.
J. T.
Perfect place for American tourist to visit. Took our entire soccer team there for lunch while walking around. Very accommodating, great food and great pints!
L. B.
Lovely pub just off Trafalgar square, all independent brands. We sheltered here during Canada Day because the lines were so long outside, they even made us their own poutine!
R. R.
Good food and a good pint.
J. B.
Great location. Very good value drinks for this part of town. Worked out ideally for meeting friends. Friendly and helpful bar staff.
J. L.
Great location, and a good selection of beers and ales
B. S.
Best pub in London. Good prices on the beers. Pretty crowded between 6-8pm on week days. Nice sofas upstairs.
B. P.
I make a b-line for this pub whenever I visit London because of the delicious Sam Smith products, the great price (it's usually 1/2 of what it'd be at another pub), and the semi-private, walled booths make it ideal for being rowdy with friends or talking privately with a date.
K.
Nice pub next to St Martin-in-the-Fields. Good beer selection. Can get busy.
A. J.
Great pub. Not too priceg as well
N. A. H. L.
A Samuel Smiths pub, a nice oldy world venue with very pleasant staff and unlike most Sam Smiths pubs in the North of England, we could pay by card and use our I.T equipment.
R. M.
Excellent central London pub with a good 'pub food' menu available upstairs. Relatively limited wine selection but all good!
R. A.
A Sam Smiths pub conveniently located next to Trafalgar square and a small walk up from Charring Cross. It's nice and cosy with a great atmosphere upstairs. Saying that it can get very busy, so good luck finding a seat!
A. S.
Not my favourite Sam Smith's pub but decent enough. Try and get a seat upstairs (cosier, much more atmosphere) or a booth downstairs. Then stay and drink for several hours. Maybe mess around with the darts in the corner. Drinks are cheap, as they always are in Sam Smith's pubs, especially given the Theatreland location.
m. s.
Great pub food 👌
J. F.
Old wooden panelled pub, with great beer (Sam Smith's), food and staff. Can beat it for catching up with friends or a cheeky pre theatre or opera drink.
S. Z.
Nice place, great staff very nice to stop here after all day walking.
D.
Good food reasonable price, what more could you ask for.
R. V.
Good spot for a decent priced pint. Lots of standing area and some booths available. Can get quite busy given the location but still good nonetheless.
J. J.
Nice little place on a busy corner. Cheap Sam Smith beer always welcome. Young-ish afterwork crowd when I was there. Didn't try the pub food.
M. S.
First time in Sam Smith pub. Very beautiful decor. A good selection of they own ales. Higly recommend the Organic Wisse Beer.
B. L.
If you've not been to a Samuel Smith pub before, here's what to expect:
Old fashioned style furnishings
Cheap Samuel Smith brand drinks
Gets pretty busy
This particular pub has some really interesting boothes to sit in.

Decent enough pub, service was fine, beer was fine, atmosphere was just a little lacking for Saturday afternoon. The outside was definitely more inviting then when in went in.
R. R.
Busy but excellent service from I think EU bar persons. And we all got good seats. Good old Sam Smiths and long live Yorkshire.

This place really doesn't need another review, it's well known enough as it is. The Chandos is a venerable establishment of Charing Cross that is always busy, has plenty of alcoves for drinking, high tables, space around the bars, sofas upstairs and a small area by the porch that is always full of smokers. The beer selection is your typical Sam Smith's affair.

Best price for beer in Central London apart from Wetherspoons. Sam Smiths bitter pulled to perfection the Yorkshire way.
A. G.
Great place to get some of the best and cheapest beer in central London. The food is excellent as well, and it's in a great location.
E. M.
Their version of the Pimm’s cup was great, as was the ambience. Disappointed they close the kitchen at 6pm on Fridays, but otherwise and excellent experience.
R. N.
Standard pub in a central location. Clean, plenty of seats, friendly. However not the best choice of beers. Haven’t tried the food.
M. S.
Really nice pub with reasonably priced and good beers. I do recommend
P. M.
Nice pub. The best beer is alpine. Is very cheap, 2,60 each pint of lager beer. I recomend this place for all people. In spain don't earn a lot of money like in Lomdon.
F. L.
Great location next to Trafalgar Square, and as a Sam Smith's pub it has great prices. Often meet friends here because of these 2 reasons, but also because of the old fashioned, traditional feel.
S. R.
I love this pub ground floor is a normal busy friendly bar, up stairs in the Opera bar it's warm and cosy big sofas great food and is a lot cheaper than other West end bars.
S. R.
Nice place and atmosphere
M. S.
Great pub. Taddys on tap - will get change back from a tenner !
Great atmosphere upstairs. Window seats are comfy and great position to people watch.
A. A.
Honestly I came here to use the toilet but decided to stay for a drink. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, great selection of drinks and very reasonable prices! Oh and the restrooms were very clean! Worth the visit for that alone
J. P.
A Sam Smiths pub near Trafalgar square. Great value and great selection, like all Sam Smith's pubs. A great spot to meet up with friends in Central London, or just while waiting for a train at Charing Cross. Don't miss the OB bitter.
j. a.
Lovely, quint and beautiful public house not far from Charing Cross Station. I would recommend it however I went on a Saturday evening and they stopped serving food around 7.30pm. 😳😌
M. S.
Nice quiet pub. A great place to go and relax with friends after a hard day at work. The prices are very reasonable too.
D. W.
Excellent Samuel Smith's pub in central location. Friendly bar staff. Comfy seats. Have always recommended to those visiting London.
S. S.
Fantastic Sam Smith's pub in a wonderful location. Battered wooden booths and plenty of character. I fear the day someone thinks it needs an "update". One of my favourite pubs in England.
G. C.
Top pub for the area. Cheaper than the rest, and more character. The upstairs is nicer than the ground floor seating
R. D.
Classic pub. Upstairs seating as well and great tasting beers. Great friendly service and clean atmosphere.
D. T.
Great, cold and cheap beer options! Good food. Really laid-back atmosphere. Excellent for after-work drinking!
E. D. B.
A classic Sam Smith pub in the perfect location. Reasonably priced drinks, perfectly nice surroundings. For these reasons, it can get stupidly busy - head upstairs to try and find a seat.
S. F. L.
Central location where you can get a decent pint for £3.80 - you basically won't get that price anywhere else around there. Cosy and comfortable. Big fan.
R. W.
What’s not to like, decent cheap beer. Bang in the middle of the west end/ Covent Garden. Always packed and Dickens himself drank there many moons ago!!
P. D.
Great place. Excellent choice of beers.
M. R.
Nice beer and food near the National Gallery. Calm atmosphere with a beautiful decor. The home-made pies are very tasty!
M. H.
Great proper pub! Nice inside and good places to sit for food upstairs.
C. L. H.
Good spot for a central London meet-up. Independent beers and wines, has character for somewhere so central.
t. k.
Samuel Smiths pub, so cheap beer, right in the heart of London. But it's a great pub too, with good food, great staff and it's always popular
S. H.
Cosy intimate pub with very subdued lighting. Standard Sam Smiths food and drink. Not a great wine selection. Busy at pre Opera times.
M. F.
Typical Sam Smith's pub. Handy if close to Trafalgar Square.
D. B.
Was dragged here on a night out. Basically a stag-do-hen-do-HQ with a big party vibe. At no fault of the pub, it seemed like a vibe where everyone else thought they were drinking with Londoners, but in reality everyone was just drinking with other out of towners.
J. A.
Good quality and very cheap beer, plus reasonable food at a reasonable price. The upstairs bar is much nicer.Edwardian decor, with fireplaces and comfy large leather sofas
D. T.
Nice Smiths pub in central London. Good luck getting a seat though, this place is always busy no matter the day. But when you get a seat it's worth the wait.
M. T.
Excellent priced beers and food in central London. Lots of space and a nice lounge upstairs. Always busy, and sociable too.
l. b.
Solid pub. It's a Sam Smith's so the beer and spirits are all Sam Smith's and very reasonably priced. The food is basic but good.
C. I. G.
Great location, great pub.
Typical English Pub food.
Nice place! Nice staff!
Very convenient place, we come back over and over.
T. A.
Convenient location, beautiful decor, and delicious foods! The prices were decent and the amenities were good too (although no wifi), and it did get a bit crowded at times, but still, the service was fast and nice and overall it was a good experience!
M. M.
A bit of a Legend, We used to call this bar 'The Full Time' as we would meet up with mates who'd been to various matches around London and would head here for a central meeting point.
It's no nonsense, fantastic location PUB! :)
S. G.
A Sam Smith's pub in central London. Really good prices for beers wines and spirits. Pubs nearby are much more expensive.
m. N.
beautiful pub with nice service
A. M.
Great pub for session drinking - the 2.8% Alpine Lager slips down and means you can drink quickly but sustainably 🙂
B. P.
I love the Chandos. It's perfectly located minutes from Charing Cross and seconds from Trafalgar Square. There are intimate booths and plenty of indoor seating on week nights (can be a bit crowded on weekends) It's a Samuel Smith brewery. Try the Taddy Lager or the organic wheat beer.
N.
It's that pub you always end up meeting your out of town friends at because you always have and everyone likes cheap beer and knows where Trafalgar Square is.
J. L. R.
Visited on a weekday. Place was pretty packed. Decent selection of beers. Nice booths that provide a certain degree of privacy if that's important to you.
A. P.
Definitely a must try if you are in the area. The food is excellent and prices are reasonable. Great place to have some food and a cold pint.
S. D.
Just off Trafalgar Square you can find this pub which offers good beers and great quality food. It's central and very busy but find a table is not impossible like in other pubs in the area.
G. B.
Cheaper than average pint prices in a better than average atmosphere. Cosy and easy. Love the place
P. W.
Great old style english pub. Beautiful decor and a fantastic pint of their own bitter. Craving another one now

Can't knock this place, cheap but nice, characterful and busy. Top pub for a couple of after work beers.
N. B.
A Sam Smith's pub, which means that it's relatively cheap for central London. Nice atmosphere, comfortable and a good size. Gets very busy of course...
T. G.
Great Sam Smith's pub in a fantastic location. There's plenty of space upstairs, although it's often crowded, so you might need to perch.
D. W.
Large and comfortable interior with booths to sit in. Owners brew their own beer and make their own spirits so no famous name drinks here.
P. D.
Good service. Good prices for London.
L. G.
Cosy, busy pub. Excellent food, beer, cider and other drinks available. Lots of space upstairs and downstairs. Very reasonably priced.
O. O.

Nice, honest pub. Decent food and good Samuel Smiths beers. Great location. Friendly staff
J. P.
Classic, reasonably priced Sam Smiths pub with reasonable decor and a little space to stand outside. Good for a quick pint before heading elsewhere for dinner.
S. D.
I am in a wheelchair and access was ok in the front doorway with a small step. However as far as I could see the only lavatories were down a flight of stairs.
However v busy around 6pm.
J. W.
Good pub with reasonable priced food and drink. All served quickly and efficiently by the highly attentive bar staff.
S. P.
Great pub - Sam Smith's beers, good food, great atmosphere and good location off Trafalgar Square.
T. A.
As a Samuel Smiths pub the drinks prices are always considerably lower than any other place in the area, and they do have a good varied selection of drinks, albeit all brewed by Samuel Smiths.
R. K.
Great atmosphere and good quality beer. A wonderful pub with bags of character and charm.
L. S.
Busy pub in the centre of town. Sam Smiths pub so prices are always good. Had the cherry beer which was delicious and refreshing after a meal in town.

Very cheep tasty and extremely cheep beer. Can get served relatively quickly when busy. What more could you want in such a central location?

Cheapest beer in London especially if you like Yorkshire Sam Smith's bitter they do a good meal here too
