Reviews of The Cockpit
f.
Perfectly tucked away pub near St Paul's. Landlord is lovely serving up a variety of ales and spirits. Went at lunch and pretty much had rhe place to myself. Will be back.
K. O.
Lovely Pub, really friendly lady behind the bar. She was really chatty and local.
Friendly locals and lots of tour groups in and out, which gave for a nice atmosphere.
Reccommend this pub and will deffo be back here, great proper pub, the way pubs should be.

Before covid I used to go to this pub regularly on a Friday after work. This is a family owned pub - how many pubs in the city of London can claim this? This may be the reason why the pub has an old school feel to it. The owner and the staff are super friendly and possibly the reason why they can also pour a proper pint. The place is unpretentious but everything is in good order. I would highly recommend this pub if anyone wants an authentic pub experience in the city of London!
S. D.
I love this pub, old fashioned but really friendly and serve a great pint. I only go once a year, but have been going for years and it never changes. If you want an authentic booza in the middle of London, you can't find a better pub.
K. H.
Lovely spot. Usually it would take years to become a qualified pilot. After two pints of stout in this pub, a man at the bar told me I was free to grab his controls whenever I wanted.
M. M.
Lovely authentic worker-bee pub with great bar staff. No frills, whatcha see, is whatcha get.

** Pub reopened on 17th May 2021 **
I visited the pub on a Saturday afternoon, around 3pm. All the tables inside were occupied, and as the current virus guidelines meant that I had to be seated to be served, it looked like I was going to go somewhere else.
The manager however pointed out that there were stools outside that were available. These were in Ireland Yard next to the pub's side exit. Two wall electric bar heaters and an awning pulled down made for an acceptable outside seating arrangement.
Entrance to this pub is by the curved doors in St Andrew's Hill.
The barman was very efficient at getting our orders. I don't know the cost of each drink, but a pint of Guinness and a pint of Tribute bitter came to £9.70.
This is a popular location for tourists, and there were at least 2 walking tours that stopped in the alleyway for Shakespeare's connection to be told. Pre-virus these groups would crowd into the bar for a brief drink, so there's at least one advantage for the other customers, not the bar for the loss of takings though.
The staircase down to the toilets is narrow - care is needed.
A good old fashioned pub in an interesting part of the City of London.
D. H. (.
Great pub 50 years ago when it was one of our locals when we worked in Faraday Building, still nice but lacking in atmosphere
D. S.
Really great old-school boozer, tucked away in the alleys between Blackfriars and City Thameslink (Ludgate Hill exit).
Dark wood and bullion glass creates a lovely cosy interior. Lots of outdoor space - some sheltered - for warm weather drinking.
A real mix of ‘locals’ - professionals & craftsmen - plus a few daring tourists. Really friendly east-end landlords. Some may not like the swearing - both at and behind the bar - but OK for me.
Decent selection of well-kept ales, plus spirits. Traditional pub grub.
A true gem!
a. m.
Awesome visit, great beer, chatty and friendly staff, Liz, albeit she cut her finger on a glass, and the pub was very busy, she just carried on, a must visit !!
J. L.
Friendly, local "proper" pub at good prices with lovely staff. If you like getting ripped off at overpriced chains, avoid.
D. T.
Something of a rarity, an old school boozer in the city! Feels like a local, decent range of beers, Scampi fries available upon request....
A. P.
First time visitor, found the staff friendly and helpful. Classic London pub and its worth a visit for a cold beer
A. C.
A proper old school English pub with great beer and staff.Love it.
a. M.
Friendly hidden old pub in city. Unspoilt and friendly and good ale. Usually does food.
G. B.
Great landlord very welcoming small historic pub near St Paul's.
J. A.
A piece of old London, what more do you need from a welcoming pub?
R. T.
Atmospheric centuries-old back street boozer in the city of London. Said to be situated on Shakespeare's old home and designed by musician Mendelssohn for plays which are still staged here. Originally the venue for cockfighting. A must for real ale and history buffs.
K. H.
Proper old fashioned pub with historic story well worth a visit
P. R.
Proper old school boozer in the heart of the City. Shakespeare lived here. Not to be missed!
J. S.
Nice small pub by St Paul's friendly for a outsider £5 for a pint of Stella compared to £8 in hotel
C. A.
Lovely quaint little pub good beer great atmosphere
J. W.
Fantastic staff with great Guinness. Always a joy.
Probably one of the most friendly pubs I've been to in the UK! Staff and locals alike are accepting and friendly. VERY nice place for a couple of quiet drinks

The Cockpit
❤️ Tucked away in the square mile you'll find a warm welcome and great atmosphere in this city boozer. A former cock fighting venue in the 18th Century, this is a must visit London Pub.

Best pint of Timothy Taylor in ages.
J. D.
Love this place! Really friendly, great atmosphere
A. S.
A true local pub. The owners make you feel welcomed and special. We absolutely love it (and our dog too 🙂).
J. J.
Proper traditional London boozer with a good selection of ales and a friendly welcome. Can't wait to go back.
r.
Friendly historic pub the hosts were excellent.
P.
A nice pub with a link to William Shakespeare. The pub has a 1970's feel to it which I like.
S. S.
The landlord is nice and welcoming, good selection of real ales and decent prices below £5 for a pint (unlike some other places charging in excess of 7 quid)
D. W.
Had a lovely Saturday afternoon lager in here this bank holiday. I've been in here a few times after work over the years and have always had a good time. It's a proper London boozer, not a fake brewery replica. Worth going for a nice fresh glass of lager! Also note, the pub is from the 1700's not 1970s as this Google page says! You can still see the cockerel fighting pit and viewing gallery!
M. C.
Great old fashioned traditional pub, their Guinness is some of the best I've ever tasted
J. M.
One of the best pubs in London, fantastic beer, great staff
S. D.
Proper Pub! Great staff great service and a proper throw back, back street boozer. Loved it.
R. A. (.
A good selection of beers, great ambiance.
R. C.
Great little pub hidden away on the backstreets of Blackfriars. Only a small place but a good selection of beers at much more reasonable prices than other pubs around it. Minimum £10 card charge is a bit of a pain, but usually end up buying rounds so not always an issue. Staff are also very friendly and welcoming.
R. W.
Great pub friendly staff great landlord gave me a leaflet on the history of the pub very helpful Guinness was awesome
G. S.
Can't recommend highly enough for a decent pint and pleasant staff, but don't expect a shiny new pub - it has real history with all the quirks that entails. To be enjoyed by lovers of the 'proper' pub.
A. P.
While not the most prominent venue in the area, I feel this meets my criteria for a proper pub. It is completely unfussy and a great place to while away a wet weekend afternoon.
A fast disappearing sort of venue, an interesting pub building with great heritage that retains freehold and is closely run by the landlord. I have only really visited on a weekend, which I think is the best time to experience this place. You are almost guaranteed to be served by the friendly landlord, there is a small selection of well kept beers. There are often sandwiches or rolls available if you're in dire need of food. This is a quiet venue on rarely used back streets: most other venues are closed on these streets at the weekend.
M. N.
Very good pint of landlord and a passable merlot
a.
Love this place, one of the best hidden gems in the City! So laidback friendly and comfortable.
Don't change!
H. L.
As the sign out front warns, this is an "old-fashioned" pub. Not much to look at, but it's got character and that classic, simple pub atmosphere. You can hear the bells from St Paul's marking the time, which is very charming. Maybe it's the warm Sunday or the fact that the power is out, but I feel rather settled here.
C. W.
What a lovely small pub. Atmosphere, history and loads of trinkets around. Nice staff. Hidden away but don't miss it if you want an old fashioned hidden gem
A. P.
A hidden gem. Old school patina. 👌
V. J.
Great little traditional pub in a world of below par gastro pubs and cocktail bars. Those complaining of a minimum charge on cards; go get cash or go elsewhere! Keep this place as it is! A real gem in the heart of London.
T. G.
Very good example of an old fashioned community pub. It's good these places still exist. Worth a visit to experience a bit of culture. Nice and friendly. Excellent value for money for central London.
A. L.
Good pub near St., Paul's., had 2 good ales on tap, cheery landlord brought beers to you, good social distancing, cleaned each table after use.
s. D.
By far the cheapest pub in the City of London, really friendly bar staff and customers plus it's the only pub open on a Sunday in the area, they have bt sport as well , worth a visit also ask the bar staff about the name of the pub and the history!
B. C.
Was there on Sunday evening - as the World Cup was coming to an end. Still a comfortable and friendly place. Nice to be able to stand outside [in a City pub] if you want to. Great!
S. T.
This is a traditional london pub, no frills, no spills, not trying to be something it's not, just an old london pub. Tucked away and just a short walk from St Paul's cathedral, great range of beers and friendly staff.
J. [. C.
An old haunt of mine, 13 years later popped in for a visit and still great cellaring of real ale.
J. A.
I think I had a great time here! Really friendly place and thankfully not rammed full of tourists or ne'er-do-wells. Good consistent range of beers and comfortable setting.
J. W.
Bit off the beaten track so more for local workers from the offices nearby than tourists. Its a "regulars" bar. Service is fast and if they know you friendly. Usual collection of beers and you can drink outside. Supposed to be where Shakespeare lived and Playhouse Yard is just around the corner.
j. k.
History greets you as soon as you open the doors. A good range of drinks in a warm comfortable atmosphere. A loyal army of locals in the evening keeps the London naravtive alive.
L. H.
Just had drinks here. It was an old school style pub, great as so different to a chain like the slug or bar one. Good drinks and fun atmosphere
G. R.
Two pint and change from a tenner!
Great little historic pub just enough off the beaten track to be special. Staff are second to none, too. Give it a go.
D. X.
Great traditional pub with lovely staff. Good selection of beers. Not too crowded which is very nice in the middle of the City!
R. D.
A proper English pub. On a site where Shakespeare used to have a house. Great for a pint and a snack in the narrow streets of old London, just outside the old roman wall.
K. O.
Cool old school London pub from the 1800's. Quaint place to have a beer. Very cozy. Beware the 10GBP minimum on credit card purchases.
A. J.
What a nice proper old school pub. Good beer good selection of snacks... very friendly staff.. completely unpretentious and highly recommended..
S. H.
Nice little pub. When I went it was very hot and we tried to drink outside but the location makes it so that you are in everybodys way who were trying to walk past!
L. T.
A proper pub in the city. Nice to go and chat over a few pints where you're not drowned out by music. Minimum spend of £10 on card though.
P. B.
Good place to drink and eating in a friendly atmosphere.
M. F.
Good old fashioned pub in handy backstreet location. A bit bright inside which takes away some of the charm. Otherwise fine
M. H.
All good
We like it there all of us
Plus, we had accidentally left a bag there. They very kindly held it for us until the Tuesday when one of us visited again
T. H.
Good traditional pub and friendly staff
B. R.
My favourite pub in the City. Very good beer. Old school crowd and feel. A wonderful haven of a proper boozer.
M. C.
Decent beer good mixture of regulars and tourists with guides so if you want to hear a potted history you probably will not have to wait long.
S. M.
Great place to have a beer after work. Very friendly staff and customers. It is like being at your hometown pub bit away.
O. P.
Classic pub, stopped for a quick pint while sightseeing and it was alright, good choice and prices and a fairly quiet ambiance on a Saturday afternoon
S. H.
The staff are lovely, the beer is great and I got a beer token (literally) for next time. Great place, well worth a visit!
B. G.
One of the best traditional pubs in London, in the backstreets around St Paul's. Shakespeare, a writer of some note, used to own a house on this spot!
N. H.
I love this pub as it's a real antidote to the sterile and faceless modern bars. Basic food and charming service and decent prices. What's not to like?
C. P.
Fantastic landlord and locals. Beer is well kept though the selection is limited.
M. G.
A london gem. A real pub in every respect
J. P.

J. L.
Legendary local boozer with a loyal following. Unchanged in years, just like the clientele likes it. Opened on weekends when other city boozers aren't.
R. T.
Great pub in the centre of London, really good value for drinks and food, simple but very tasty
R. R.
the pub looks nice but, contrary to Googles description, this is not a theater. the cockpit theater is 3.5 miles away from here.

G. W.
