Reviews of The Duke E17
A. M.
Phenomenal food at very reasonable price. This pub is truly hidden gem. The atmosphere is down to earth, which is combined with great food and service. The manager Jay is giving the right guidance to his staff. They are very kind and polite and made us feel very welcome. I highly recommend this place .
J. R.
A spacious pub with a nice playlist, tasty food (especially the triple cooked chips and buffalo wings) interesting tables, comfy chairs on some tables, and great customer service. There is free Wi-Fi, toilets are always clean, and there is a spacious pub garden as well. I enjoy going here and would recommend it!
J. W.
Really cool pub, loads of space inside and outside. Went for the Sunday roast which was nice, I had the chicken but we had to chase up our orders and the staff were a little rude. Me and someone else were still waiting for our roasts and by the time they eventually came everyone had finished eating which wasn't the best experience and they were barely warm. I could understand if it was busy but the place was empty...hoping it was just an off day, would like to go back and try again.
P. H.
Used to be a s&@£ hole…..now a nice neighbourhood pub….sort of the trend around here. Nice range of beers. The food hasn’t been as good since they changed over the franchise.
Still much better than the flower pot.
B. H.
We were here for a private function, it was really good. They had a good spread of food to pick from and pints were really reasonably priced for London. Close to the station so easy to get to as well. Would definitely go back. Only thing was the toilets are quite dirty, the only men's loo was blocked the whole evening
J. R.
Just popped in here, great drinks, gorgeous food (especially on a Sunday - roasts are incredible). Really appreciate the relaxed atmosphere in this bar. Very spacious, chíc decor, all of that. Love it. Staff are really friendly too! Very helpful and patient. Heard the late bar on the weekend is absolutely rocking! Will definitely be returning with a gang here - Keep up the good work Duke!
F. K.
Good pub, but please get rid of the big flashing sign above door leading to garden area. It gives me a headache !
J. D.
Good atmosphere, Nicely redecorated, nice outdoor area , friendly staff.
A. F. (.
Very nice, quiet pub with games and a nice atmosphere. Good drinks and satisfying food. Shame it was too cold for the garden.
E. M.
Great little pub. Great choice of drinks, the Espresso Martini was not the best one I've ever had, but enjoyed their selection of wines. Had to wait quite a while for our dinner though.
Enjoyed the food, the atmosphere was great, nice playlist.
A. A.
Delicious food and friendly service. You can also bring your furry four legged friends.
A. T.
Good pub, good staff, but the 'apres ski' food was absolutely dreadful.
M. M. W.
Love the Duke - we work round the corner and they're always kind and welcoming to us teachers! Great front and back beer garden and good variety of different drinks. Also the place is dog heaven! As someone who is obsessed with dogs, this is definitely a plus!
M.
Welcoming staff and cozy decor with a moderate but excellent quality cocktail list. Would also highly recommend the fries.
D. M.
Very nice friendly staff, nice beer at decent prices. We will be back.Thank you.
M. M.
Very nice place to hang out with friends. Good atmosphere 👌 and friendly staff 👌 top top!
E. P.
Nice pub close to wood street station. Inside is very nice and clean and you have two beer garden to choose from.
They have also a nice selection of beers and the classic pub food that they are serving is nice.
N. H.
Nice food and friendly service and good ambience and decor. Only two criticisms: (1) it did take a little while to be served - I noted it wasn’t due to lack of staff or too many customers - but the staff are very nice; (2) the wine selection seems a bit dull and the one we chose wasn’t very nice for £28. Pluses: food was fab - steak pie was very good, as was the thick cut ham, egg and chips - the chips were fab!
N. F.
A friendly place, with helpful staff, but a little too expensive for regular custom, this is a place for occasional visits. A group of friends gathered to celebrate a landmark birthday of one of our number, who had a penchant for the frozen margaritas that are a speciality here. Made using a machine designed for slushies, they are delicious but far too addictive. I can recall little of what happened that evening, but at least everything I can remember was pleasant...
S. R.
Good pub. Staff were excellent.
j. l.
This pub has really improved, brilliant staff, new menu with loads of veggie options. I had dinner there last night with 5 friends. We sat outside in a pod, was great. We all loved our food.
T. W.
Ever since a client recommended their chicken wings I have been absolutely hooked on this pub. The pub is a delight. Yes the chicken wings are the best I've ever eaten, but the pub's ambience is perfect. Good selection of music, the staff are always polite and love ❤️ their house red. Glad you have now r opened post lockdown and enjoy the table service too.
G.
Cool pub ! Nice design ! Good customer service
D. H.
Awesome chilled vibe, with great beers and food! Great fish and chips, and best cauliflower buffalo wings ever!! And you're always made to feel real special and.
welcome by the friendly staff. Thanks guys
M. L.
A great bar with excellents cocktails ! We can also eat a very tasty hamburger with good fries !
K. K.
Burgers here are great! Staff are really lovely! Good cider on tap and great range of beers. Really lovely ambience and space in general! Give it a visit!
K. H.
Ordered fish and chip, and the batter on the fish was so crunchy and delicious, and the fish inside wasn't greasy. Wish they still the vegan burgers
R. C.
Lovely pub with delicious food and cozy vibes
G. B.
Very interesting place, good food and good customer service.
L.
Lovely food and very accommodating staff.
B. T.
Tasty food (including a great vegan burger), excellent tunes, great atmosphere (everyone is welcome) and friendly staff.
P. M.
With the new restrictions in place, the Duke has adjusted by opening much earlier and offering a newly revamped brunch friendly menu. For our family, this is a welcome change as the new menu offers a good balance of brunch favourites from healthy to indulgent. Staff are friendly and courteous, but remind you of your responsibility to sign in for track and trace. A positive adjustment.
S. M.
Bit expensive but staff are very friendly and its a really nice atmosphere.
F. K.
I like this pub. Music can be too loud, and I hate the flashing sign leading to the "garden" area. It would give an asperin a headache. Otherwise a good pub. Food options have improved recently too.
I. C.
It's actually a good place to take the kids to eat though on the surface it's not really aimed at families. The burgers are good (though much better in the pub than delivered). It has a shabby feel to it that sometimes goes beyond shabby to knackered but we like it. The music is good. The toilets however are gross.
S. J.
The staff member who served us was absolutely lovely. His colleague mistakenly chucked away the custom drink he was making us but he persevered and provided us with above and beyond customer service. Looking forward to going back to the Duke soon, I hope the food is as good as the customer service.
M. P. B.
Always popping there after work really nice atmosphere really friendly staff nice place to be
J. T. C.
It was really nice going here during the week, very peaceful and chill. It has a lovely atmosphere. The staff are generally lovely, I wanted to say a massive thanks to Joseph and Alana (who’s first day it was I beleive). Alana was incredibly welcoming, especially considering COVID, and told us what we needed to do for the track and trace and ordering etc very politely without talking down to us at all. She was incredibly friendly, AMAZING customer service skills and I seriously hope she goes far in life (considering what a lovely woman she was, I’m sure she will!). Unfortunately this comfort was slightly ruined by one of the women working there who seemed to be their superior. My friend was upset and tired and was just resting her head on the table, only for this woman to come up to us and say “you can’t be doing that”, really embarrassing her and making her cry. It really angered me, especially considering my friend is such a lovely girl and was literally resting her head on the table. Is this boarding school? Fair enough if she was sprawled out on the table doing an irish dance but she literally was not. She really upset my friend and that’s not okay. We weren’t rowdy at all, just there to have a pint and a catch up, and yet this woman kept eyeing us up all night making us very uncomfortable. I hope she changes this soon as it did actually put me off. Luckily Joseph and Alana were so welcoming and hospitable that it did help balance this review a bit. Joseph let us know we could stay and Alana was so friendly, especially considering it was her first day. Overall, a nice pub with good staff but as usual it seems management could do with a bit of sorting out themselves x
P. M.
Good atmosphere and friendly covid-aware staff.
J. R.
Love the duke! Great place and local! Always the best place to go on the weekend when the pubs close! Drinks are a little pricey but it's worth it for the late night venue. They play great tunes and serve tasty drinks, and they have cool retro arcade and pinball machines. Would recommend all day every day ❤️❤️
D. P.
Great local pub, food is sometimes a bit hit and miss but what you'd expect from a pub :) staff are friendly and helpful.
E. A.
My local pub. Very good triple fried chips. Good pub menu
G.
Quieter than I would expect, but nice venue, nice staff. Woukd visit again.
T.
Cracking roast and laid back atmosphere. Does the job for me.
A. G.
I went there tonight for the ‘all you can eat chicken wing challenge”. The chicken wings were nice, meaty and come in 4 different flavours for around £10. Bargain!! The beers aren’t to expensive either. The staff a very friendly. I strongly recommend
M. W.
Good place for a decent range of beers. Friendly staff. Didn't try the food, burgers, wings, etc. And they have got rid of the dart board (boo). Dog friendly. A fine establishment.
A. S.
The best local pub in wood street area. Family friend until 7pm and good people all the time. We had a couples of parties in it including my son birthday. Sooo cool!
K. W.
The atmos, drinks selection and vibe is all top notch and they allow families in during the day.
Bit on pricey side for a burger but they are good and they do deals throughout the week (£10 burger and drink on a Monday, etc.)
Decent.
D. d. S.
Lovely space inside but only 2 small tables outside if you are in the company of smokers. The menu could also be expanded to do specials as it mainly does burgers.
The burgers however are fantastic and the service is excellent.
D. H.
I like it, only 1 beer on the hand pump though.
B.
Burgers are good (so are the chips), and the knowledgeable bar staff are generous with the tasters. Some great beers on tap, Signature Brew and Shipyard were both present on the last visit. Somewhat more grungy in appearance than the local competition (ie The Bell) but totally worth a visit
O. C.
Pub and space is great. Not sure about the music on weekends. Feels like it can have more trade if it had popular genre music such as hip hop, garage, 80s, pop punk.
l. m.
Perfect place to have a toast, coffee or tea and if you need to work with your laptop is you have a pretty view.
R. V.
Just been repainted, refurbished and reopened, under new management (August 2015).
Now there's a good selection of ale (including some from the local Wild Card Brewery), excellent burgers (courtesy of The Burger Joint) and a great atmosphere. A complete transformation, and we loved it.
E. W.
Recently hired the cabin for my boys first birthday party and it went really well, largely due to the fantastic staff that were on hand; Really proactive and accommodating. Weather turned sour and the big umbrellas for the outside space were perfect.
A great day was had by all!
Thanks again!
F. L.
It was average - but certainly room to be a 4 or 5.
Our first visit to The Duke snd whilst I work in E11 and lived in the area for 18 years, I thought it was a good chance to try somewhere different. The nearest pub of any competition is The Bell, but far enough not to be direct competition and different style of pub / business and food offering.
From the outside, it looks the part & as the areas has changed - it fits in well with the demographic. Didn’t check out the garden, a little too cold.
Walk into the pub - some may call it a bar. It ticked the boxes - lighting at a good level (ambient) it was certainly clean, good lay out. To be honest - 4/5 stars for the whole place. The staff were friendly and a good selection of if beers / draught bottles & spirits...
So why only “average” and 3 stars? Simply two reasons - which both can be easily fixed. Music & food.
Music - one minute it was at a level that was just right for a pub with about 15 - 20 people on a cold Thursday night at 7pm - next minute it is cranked up so you can’t hear each other talk. On the music, something really didn’t click - it wasn’t Valentines Day was it - I’m a bit “old skool” Keith Sweat’s “Twisted” was playing when we walked in, great track - but I realised 4 or 5 tracks in - it was a night or R&B love ballads! All 4 One’s “I Swear” Do the staff get free reign of the music or was this death by Spotify? Easily fixed guys... but certainly not what I was expecting.
The clincher, this is what sealed the “3 star review” The Food.
We bought
- 6 buffalo wings w Blue Cheese Sauce - ✅ recommenced and good size portion.
- Chicken Box & 2 sides (slaw & fries). Wife was happy with ✅ - we did order blue cheese fries, but the fries were... plain? Simple mistake.
- Mac & Chreese 🤔 - it looked the part, for £5 a reasonable portion. Hot & sizzling, the cheese placed under the grill & browned to perfection. Unfortunately absolutely NO flavour, really, really bland - certainly needs ramping up with a stronger cheese. But pretty disappointing - how can you go wrong with Mac & Cheese?
- McBrew Burger - The beef patties looked “bought in” I may be wrong snd crrtsinly lacked flavour . If not bought in, then they too could do with ramping up - try using course ground mince, add some ground beef fat to the mix for flavour and don’t press them so tightly (only my opinion) tasted shop bought and looked it - I say this in the way they looked to have shrunk & curled like shop bought burgers do. It was dry and I was told by the young lady behind the bar that they were home made. None the less, it was an average burger and 3 is all it gets.
All easily fixed...
Nothing worse than a review that’s not positive, but hope you see this as constructive review. A great looking pub inside & out, certainly fits in with the area and very relaxing inside.
Oh, your menus - why are the prices on your weekly menu different to those on the Sunday menu. I did ask for the dessert menu - identical items on both menus, different prices...
Would we come back, certainly. But as we now live in SE18, it looks like we will be trying out The Star. it will be interesting to see what you do with that. Not sure about the blue, but we will see - Plumstead People on Facebook are already opinionated on it. 🤣
Good luck with The Star / The Duke - we liked it.
M. G. (.
The burgers are good. A good choice if you have older kids - they have an old school pinball machine, darts and board games. Great selection of Rye, Bourboun and Malt whiskies.
T. L.
Great pub, friendly helpful staff. Excellent choice of food.
L. S.
Looks great after refurbishment but unfortunately they have changed the burgers (no taste or gherkins) and chips (soggy) and they were quite poor. I did let one of the bar staff know. Will go back but not to eat.
G. H.
Lovely food and friendly staff ....great band on tonight too ...
S. A.
A great place to chill with friends with some burgers and beers!
M. K.
Great local. Good choice of beer and ale. Food OK. Bit pricey for roast on Sunday. Staff lovely and dog friendly too.
E. S.
Good pub. Love the little space at the back. Great for parties. Inside the main bar is spacious, a great range of drinks, and terrific burgers. Good way to spend a Sunday
S. H.
Very friendly and welcoming service. Food selection of beers. Great chips. Also has a pinball machine and some arcade games. Comfy seats!
S. G.
Great Bar - children and dog friendly - fantastic drink selection - very friendly bar staff - Great Burger kitchen - late bar Friday and Saturday with excellent DJs, also really loving the blues band on Sunday afternoon.
Definitely worth a visit.
J. F.
#food was great. Shame the place was over run by children whose parents allowed them to run around unsupervised, climb and run all over the new sofas, swing off the pin ball machines and generally behave like little hooligans whilst the doting parents either smiled on indulgantly or just ignored them. Take #responsibility for your children! Teach them manners and to respect other people's property.
i. C.
Organising a family get together long distance is a challenge at the best of times. Johnny and his friendly team at The Duke made it all very easy, nothing was too much trouble, they delivered what was promised and more. A lovely team of people and a delightful pub made our gathering even more special, Thank You. I vote you the friendliest pub in England.
I. M.
Great service, EXCELLENT draught beer selection and absolutely huge. Thoroughly recommend x
A. W.
Always a great time in The Duke. Lovely staff, good food and a great selection of drinks
E. S.
The style of the place is unique, an eclectic bump-together of almost Motown neon with dark wood furnishings and a few naval spotlights over the bar.
There's something going on there most nights of the week - Ukulele Wednesday get my vote - and they host special events on a regular basis whether it's marathon nights showing Star Wars or a come-in-costume Wayne's World night.
The drinks are good. I like craft lager, APAs and less-hoppy IPAs and find a little of everything I like. The variety is good and the breweries are well picked. The range of spirits is out of this world too, though I don't rifle that end of the bar too often. There's a so-so cocktail menu too, though I'd like to see them do more and better.
The food is great, as long as you like burgers. They do a solid menu of 12 burgers plus a monthly special, and a great range of quality sides (fries, onion rings, popcorn chicken, mac and cheese). The £9 cheeseburger is great and at a good price, and the pricier burgers are gorgeous and varied - though make sure to go with an appetite.
The Duke Burger is probably worth a mention as I've never seen anywhere else do a burger that's breadcrumbed and fried pulled brisket filled with mac and cheese(!)
M. G.
Great staff and one of the most friendly pubs you will encounter. I love it here.....try the beer garden with the little pods
M. B.
Want to be in Shoreditch but can't actually be bothered/afford to live there? Then come here. It really is trying to be "too cool for school". Great burgers though and a good selection of beer.
S. J.
Good service, good prices, good vibes but need to improve food menu, choices are limited for v/vg with nut allergy
D. C.
My local.
Good beer and staff.
Open very late for those who like an early morning with music.
Also family style pub in the day and early evening.
M. P.
What a random but quirky place. Perfect for everyone and families. Section to play proper darts, so come early in your teams. Play a bit of old school pin ball machine. The Mac and cheese was perfection 😊
P. A.
Went on a Tuesday evening, place was not busy but it took about 30 to serve us 3 burgers. It was my first visit since the pubs refurbishment so I did not know what to expect from the food side. Slow service my daughter had to go and ssk whete our food was. When it came the server asked who had ordered which burger (3 different burgers). Part way through my burger I realised that it wad the wrong one!!. If any one had vome to ask how the food eas I could have told them; but nobody came to ask. Be that as it may the burger that I ate came with some sort if salsa on top of meat - this was fridge cold and made the burger cold quite quickly. When we were leaving I mentioned mistake to one of the bar people who didn't seem that concerned. Wont be in a hurry to go back!
A. W.
Great staff and selection of booze
j. f.
Great food and friendly service, a bit overprice but is worth it.
A. G.
Quite quiet when we went in, but OK. There's a cat. Not a great selection of drinks, but passable. A pool table. If it were a bit busier — which I think it might be, when there's music on — it could be great, but our visit was a little un-atmospheric.
J. S.
Food speciality at The Duke is burgers - we had the cheeseburger and the 3 amigos which were both delicious! Staff were efficient but not very welcoming. Other reviews say different so maybe this was an off day.
M. W.
This place is great to go for a night out. It definitely attracts a weird crowd of people. Drinks are fair and it's open late. Really nothing special or bad about this place.
W. H.
Brilliant place with great beers , delicious food and friendly stuff. Was there in Saturday night and party was wild! Great indie/rock set.
Also there is flipper and darts. Definitely gonna go there again.
K. P.
The duke hosted my engagement party. It was unforgettable. They were so kind, helpful and the cabin was stunning and so reasonable. A dream venue. I would recommend anyone to have a party here.
M. L.
Conscientious social distancing measures twinned with friendly staff, a tasty burger and a nice selection at the bar make this a great spot.
M. D.
Roast was one of the better in the area. It was pretty quiet with only a few people inside. Table was so wobbly we had to move because we couldn't eat. But I'd go back.
S. D.
I work close but never been there until yesterday. I was pleasently surprised. Love the ambiance and friendly staff and good food. Would definitely be going there regularly. Keep up the good work!
L. M.
Good pub with a late licence on the weekend. Great for going out with friends. Staff are friendly, music is good. A tad expensive for the area though.
S. A.
I mean its not a bad pub but its not the best, ive been a few times, drinks are over priced and the people that go there are looking for trouble. Only good thing is if i ran jome from here itll take 2 minutes liturally and i can stop off have a some wings and chips
M. C.
Great burgers, decent beer choice, highly recommended for early evenings. Open 'til 3 which means some nights you get a few unpleasant characters.
M. J.
Brilliant staff, great service
P. M.
A welcome addition to the neighbourhood. Very child friendly, also allowing children for dinner time. Good burger selection. An interesting selection of beer.
H. K.
My local pub love it. X
L. N.
Seriously overpriced. over 5 quid for a pint of Guinness. It's a 'naice' pub though and the staff are friendly. It's more expensive than the city though. You wouldn't pay as much in The Ivy
d.
Good food (Korean wings) and great service, recommended booking during covid
M. P.
Enjoyed a work do here recently. Liked that we had access to a separate room and there's a garden space. Can't really comment on the rest or food options, hence 3 star.
G. J.
Good food, friendly staff, good Covid security, pleasant setting.
B. L.
Great pints, good food, and some good service. The bar treated us well and the food is done separate. Food is a bit pricey but very tasty.
m. e.
Nice outside area well attended to by servers only wish it had been warmer
I. O.
Staff are really friendly and accomodating.
I. K.
This establishment is quiet amazing, great food and even better drinks, the staff were very friendly and the atmosphere was magical 5/5 amazing job guys. Will definitely recommend to Everyone.
A. F.
No cooked food was available when we went but staff were happy for us to bring in take away 😀
Decor is quite tired/dated but overall would still be good for a evening of drinking
J. M.
Good food, good beer, good music and friendly staff. Suffers from the problem most trendy pubs in the area suffer from: way too many small children and prams.
K. D.
Really nicely renovated and open late. Good music, good drinks. It's in a bit of a rough area so have your wits about you when you leave.
D. M.
Great pub ! Fantastic food ! Top selection of beers ! Super friendly staff ! Real asset to the area !! Highly recommend a visit!!
l. m.
Nice Atmosphere, good beers and food. Food is a bit overpriced for the quantity and the quality you receive. Overall a nice place to hang out for
d. k.
Great pub, awesome burgers, quality selection of beers and the music was good too. Child friendly also 👌🏼
J. G.
Really tasty burgers and some very interesting/random lagers (Vienna, Poretti, Verdett) on tap. Place looking great after refurb, I will return!
A. L.
Nice chilled pub, friendly staff, roast isnt too shabby and their puddings are worth the calories!
K. G.
Great pub. Had a brilliant brisket and roasted veg sandwich here. Late bar, good music
K. M.
Dropped in and took advantage of there burger and a pint deal the pint was ok the burger wasn't too bad looked at the rest of the menu I might just have to pop back again
v. N.
Great pub great staff well enjoyed night well taken care of would happily hold a party in again.
A. B.
Great food and good prices. Quiet weekday meal with great bar staff who are genuinely interested in a conversation.
R. S.
It's a lovely, spacious, light pub with a mainly burger menu.
S. S.
Friendly and laid back atmosphere plus good selection of beers. Burgers do not disappoint
N. B.
Too many children at times and wouldn't say it's s family pub. Food is great though if not a little pricey
N. L.
Had the spicy burger and it was lovely and messy in the best way and seriously hit the spot. The toilets were a bit dingy and cramped.
H. L.
Ridiculously good burgers, great atmosphere, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, and best of all- rock music. What's not to like?!
J. D.
I love The Duke!!! The staff are awesome, there is a great selection of beers and the food is super delicious!!
I. G. M.
Great local e17 pub. Spent a lot doing it up to make it look shabby, and their veggie burgers are amazing... 😍
P. T.
Great pub with good beer selection and good food. Also has good outdoor area
M. B.
Found the drinks a bit expensive. The burgers are good and the fries are delicious. Lacking a bit of atmosphere
M. S.
Early in the day it's a nice place for a relatively quiet coffee or pint, both good.
A. J. J.
A traditional London pub with a great welcome. Good selection of live bands. Well worth a visit.
N. M.
Spacious pub, with outside seating and good service.
C. H.
Nice pubs. Great burgers. Don't understand why we can't order medium rare or rare though
A. D.
Nice, cosy place. The burgers are very tasty and good here. Much better than in the Village.
R. R.
Amazing burgers! Great beer! Excellent music choices! Friendly staff!
D. L.
Nice place to be with. Good selections of beers. If you are in Wood street stop here for a drink!
J. R.
Very family friendly on the weekend. Live blues on Sunday afternoon. Awesome (but expensive) burgers
H. P.
Nice friendly pub serving anything. Fantastic burgers from 'Buns' their burger joint.
S. M.
Good quality affordable food
J. L.
Not the same since the recent referb. Really miss the old staff. Sunday roasts are very good which helps make up for it.
N. W.
Such a good bar, would be better if it was in zone 1 but the other zones need good bars too I guess
J. L.
Went for pre Christmas drinks. I'm from Essex so was a first for me turn into a bit of a club at the end of the night. Bloody loved it!
l. f. 2.
Cool decent pub nice staff security can be a bit funny but better to be safe than sorry
R. S.
Atmosphere is great and food an array of amazing burgers....also add onion rig s to the order.
P. W.
I really like this place, great atmosphere and the burgers are simply awsome.
S. F.
Great airy pub selling delicious (although pricey) burgers, and a good selection of beers.
J. K.
Played good music however lots of police vans outside at the end of night, which I suppose made you feel safe.
V. I.
