Reviews of The French House
J. N.
Had a wonderful long Saturday lunch today. Great staff, a lovely atmospheric dining room and all three courses just spot on. Thank you.
M. L.
It’s been my favourite bar for over twenty years, and I’m so glad it’s (barely) changed in that time. Lovely spot either inside by the windows or outside, to have a drink and watch the world go by. New food menu is excellent and the Breton Cider is always a treat. Usual no pints, no mobiles rules and all the better for it.
E. W.
Just the best place to drop in to eat proper French comfort food. Great staff and reasonable prices. Will come back again and again. Don’t hesitate, just go there!
n. d.
Always a lovely welcome here, wonderful pub with a great atmosphere thanks to the terrific staff and landlady. A true Soho pub and always a good conversation to be had while spending a couple of hours watching the world go by. Coronation chicken sandwiches on New Years Day were a godsend.
M. B.
I was in The French House on Friday night and discovered my purse was missing. Lovely lovely man helped me look for it. We couldn't find it so he took details and took the trouble to text my husband Saturday morning to say he had had another look but couldn't find it. He also offered us a free drink on the night. The French House is a fab bar and the staff always friendly. Thank you French House.
H. M.
One of my favourite pubs. Always rammed with interesting people. Not the place to go for a private conversation. Has a small outside covered bit for smokers which is also usually rammed. Only serve beer in half pints. Lots of history in this place including Charles de Gaulle commanding the French resistance from there as well as famous painters and poets like Francis Bacon drinking there in their hayday.
h.
Consistently charming Soho institution. Ricard and a choice of alternative pastis brands never fails to put a smile on my face.
E. A.
This is an absolute must for any culinary enthusiast. A small and perfectly formed restaurant that seats not more than twenty, with world class staff, serving classic French dishes with an occasional modern twist. The wine list is short but very good with some very affordable options. There is none of the stuffiness about it that one usually gets in this sort of place. Undoubtedly one of my favourite French restaurants ever. You must book!
A. M.
Fantastic lunch upstairs. Chef kindly gave my table the signature garlic on toast after I mentioned forgetting to order it. Last time I ate here was over 15 years ago when another great team was in charge. Upstairs is a special retreat. I hear downstairs now serves pints!!
M. M.
Nice quirky pub always worth a visit, hopefully they'll go back to just serving half pints soon!
D. S.
Soho is a fascinating part of London; a little seedy in places but, refreshingly still full of characterful bars and restaurants.
This establishment is an institution for a variety of reasons. The downstairs bar makes you feel like you’re in France - pictures of Charles de Gaulle, Breton cider, eau de vie in various varieties and beers by the half pint - a lovely intimate feel. In fact de Gaulle used it as an office during the Second World War and apparently Dylan Thomas and Francis Bacon both drank here.
It has no music nor TV - to encourage conversation - and if you breach the no mobile phones policy you will be abruptly told to go outside. The policy is clearly stated so punters who feel aggrieved at being chastised should be looking at themselves rather than complaining!
The French (obviously!) restaurant upstairs is a lunchtime pleasure. Quality ingredients, superbly cooked. Booking is essential.
A. E.
French is French. Just the name of a house larger warrants a pit stop. Meteor. From France. Quite a beer!
The French never disappoints you, it’s a steady service with an excellent selection of drinks. HB is there, which is a massive plus.
The crowd is under a massive update now, less actors and more of random beautiful people!
Love you All!

This place gets so busy but lucky enough to get a seat upstairs. This was our 2nd visit. Great for people watching in the street. Will definitely be back

6/10/20 Lunch. Chef is Neil. Pre Tier 2.
The whole experience was magical..the history..walls of portrait photos and art.. my view over the busy street.. gentle service.. laughter over the art of displaying artichoke leaves ..or “who cares”.
An artichoke is such a delicious beginning to any meal, as I peel and suck each leaf, placing then neatly on my plate (please enjoy the photos!) and slowly..enjoying the flesh and juices.
And then eating into the firmness of the heart which I’ve cut into bite size. Absolutely gorgeous as Neil had cooked it to flavourful perfection.
Then masterfully cooked Lamb Navarin with aligot mash potatoes. This was out of this world. The photos show the full deep colours and the flavours were rich and the chunks of lamb just perfect.
You may know the restaurant, you may not, whichever, do try to find a way to visit this special restaurant, firstly of course, to enjoy the experience and secondly to give personal valued support to The French House while we live through Covid. Carl

We ate here last night and it was fantastic.
Food was great and just as billed on the menu which was simple and easy to choose from.
Take a mad Irish queen, South African / Devonian waitress, and a chatty chef who are all clearly good friends and enjoy delighting customers with fun and banter and the place explodes with fun and laughter.
Definitely would recommend.
S. B.
Brilliantly cooked French food with superb ingredients. The calves' brains are absolutely divine - a must-try even if you're squeamish. They're a lot better than you might think, one of the nicest dishes I've had anywhere in ages.
I. S.
Cute little pub with interesting & friendly crowd. Shame they don’t serve food on Friday evenings.
Excellent selection of wines sold by the glass (or bottle of course).
Helpful and efficient staff. It can get very crowded and loud in here.
The toilets were upstairs, so would not be suitable for those with accessibility needs.
K. M.
Another delightful opportunity to pop into the French House before our train home, great atmosphere, friendly staff and reasonably priced drinks
K. J.
Why does Google keep asking me to write reviews? French House is iconic, you can't not love the place 💙 one of the best pubs in London and that's just a fact. They were serving full pints last time I went in though, which is a bit off brand
T. V. D.
Been going for 30 years or more ... The restaurant upstairs is a proper treat now. Turbot was sublime. Soho changes ..but the C&H remains a stalwart.
P. R.
This might well be my favourite pub in London, definitely Soho. Bijou of a place where small means cosy, intimate and exciting NOT cramped and smelly like the tube you took to get there. The front windows open fully shutter style which aids with the ambiance but maybe more so with the chance to people watch or to pose in the style of your favourite author. The feeling of history in this long standing pub is obvious and adorns the walls in photos and drawings crafted by the famous and infamous. The original till still sits proud and even though not functioning is still polished and intriguing as the charismatic, fast witted Landlord who managed to make me feel like a gentleman and naughty child all at the same time. Remember if you want immediate kudos when you walk in ask for a half pint.....The French does not serve pints!
K. W.
One of my favourite pubs in Soho. Good atmosphere and feels very authentic
K. K.
Lovely and Friendly atmosphere. If you're in the creative industry. its s great place to network
C. T.
A slice of France in the middle of Soho, friendly and chatty staff. Didn't eat there this time but defo will next visit.
A small pub, but perfectly formed, seating at the bar and on the pavement, great in the summer but suggest securing a table inside early as this place is a popular one, so when the rain returns good luck finding a place to rest that bum!
Looking forward to a pint or two there soon!

We came here for lunch last week. A fabulous meal in an iconic setting. Really great food and service. Superb!
L. W.
Lovely proper old pub in heart of Soho. Very cosy. Friendly staff.
C. H.
Fabulous dining. Good attention from the staff and a short visit from the Chef. A nice touch and well appreciated. Definitely a top class experience.
F. F.
One of the last true Soho bars
Space is tight which is a major part of its ambiente. Paintings and drawings plaster the walls
The catering is stellar. Oysters, Welsh rarebit all amazing
J. S.
Staff were very welcoming and the place has a great vibe. Amazing old decor! Stopped for lunch and was very impressed! Had some game bird & some amazing goose fat roasties. The challenge is to eat them all!? The manageress did give us the spare ones to takeaway which was cool! Would have been 5 stars from me if they had some more French beer, some Bier De Garde would have been fantastic! Though they do have a couple of Belgium bottles which are great!
G. S.
Fabulous food and very friendly service. V accommodating and kind to our child.
S. L.
Less French than de Gaulle however has a fun atmosphere and friendly staff
D. F.
what a pub very friendly staff always great service and friendly atmosphere
A. M.
Always a pleasure to visit this London institution which has been the backdrop to so many special occasions in my life. Quirky, fun and inimitable. Great location to soak up Soho experiences.
R. B.
Its an idiosyncratic kind of a place, unique and very Soho..more wine than beer, which is only served in half pints, lots of characters , no mobile phones, no laptops and certainly no wi-fi, this is an old fashioned sort of a place, its about conversation and reflection, Strange piece of the 1960s hanging on, with its genteel ambience, it is not for the young really, its a lost world frozen in time.
I. M.
A further experience of the past!! Again so pleasing that the atmosphere and clientele has successfully stayed so similar
C. P.
Soho institution. Small and cramped like most local pubs, covered in interesting photographs, bit of seating outside and always a great atmosphere
M. G.
Not the most welcoming bar, bit cliquey. Has its charm.
m. c.
It is a very relaxed and chilled out place to hang out in the heart of soho.
The customers are really friendly, it is a good place to make a friend.
T. H.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly bar staff. Excellent wine list and delicious wine. Upstairs is less busy than downstairs. Will be back for more....
S. B.
Classic thespian pub. Also only serve beers in half pints
I. M.
One of the few decent pubs in Soho nowadays.
I. S.
The place was kind of OK however the bartender was really rude and impatient. Maybe it was because it was Sunday evening but still didn't make us feel welcome.
S. G.
Great bar. Never disappoints- would be gutted if it ever went.
K. B.
Popped in on Christmas day as a solo traveller in Soho. Such a welcoming and friendly place. Felt very comfortable being there. The G&T was bloody lovely too. Thank you xx
T. S.
Wonderful straight up pub with plenty of hand pumped ales. Good service and very warm atmosphere. People here actually talk to each other and this adds to the pubs general feel good factor. Great boozer.
J. C.
A fantastic place full of great people unspoilt by the greed that is slowly devouring this area, hopefully will be around for a long time too come
B. C.
Great little old pub in heart of Soho, with plenty of character.
F. W.
the roast brill and fennel was sublime
G. B.
Known this place for over 40 years. Always loved it's charm. 🍺🙏👽👽
A. E.
My favorite place to go with friends/ family or even on my own. I always feel safe & comfortable. People are always friendly
d. e.
Top bar, loads of history and a top french restaurant, no complaints
M.
This place just grows on you. Been here twice now after a friend's recommendation and has actually improved somewhat due to the Covid situation. There is plenty of seating outside (weather permitting) and inside there seems to be more space and seating available due to social distancing measures. A cosy place with friendly staff. Great for a meet up with friends. Check it out.
m. p.
Get the meteor and try and get a seat in this amazing place.
M. E. H.
Lovely small little pub with good wine
B. T.
This very old fashioned pub is extremely overcrowded at weekends
A. A.
Always nice to drop in for a swift drink. A never boring diverse crowd from young to the young at heart.
K. D.
One of my favourite places for drinking in Soho! I've been coming here since the '80s and I still love it. It's always full of interesting characters and there is always a buzz!
J. E.
Lovely little pub Great atmosphere
D. T.
There are 2 highlights here - the no phones rule which all pubs should have, and the picture of Charlie Gimbit from Lovejoy on the wall. The half pint thing everyone complains about is easily sorted - just buy 2 of them. Gets too busy in here sometimes and the beer is nothing to write home about, but all in all the place is ok.
C. P.
Excellent waiter, very tasty Gurnard and very well considered wine pairings. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Unfortunately I was unable to get an outside table because of the demand after the restrictions were partially lifted after the pandemic. The service seemed to be fast and efficient. I will return when everything calms down.
I. B.
Fab place! Lots of atmosphere. Difficult to get a reservation. Regulars in the bar are greeted like long lost family. Newcomers not so warmly. The restaurant however was welcoming and enjoyable, if a little cramped. But that sort of adds to the charm.
F. L.
One of the finest meals I’ve had in recent memory. Sitting upstairs for a couple of hours, I hadn’t felt so content in a long time. The decor and staff made me feel so happy and welcome.
Neil Borthwick’s kitchen was exceptional too. Everything I had was truly impeccable. The garlic confit and goat curds on toast and the rhubarb crumble completely exceeded my expectations.
My father who is quite uneasy about food forbid me from ordering the calves brain and crispy pigs head but I wish to return to sample these.
D. S.
A nice little pub in the heart of Soho.
U. M.
Great Restaurant with a cozy size. I strongly recommend the Barnsley chop which was very tasty and in great portion. The staff is very friendly and helpful. A perfect place for a dinner in London in a quiet yet vivid environment. Reservations strongly recommended.
G. H.
A lovely pub. I went with friends but seems like a great date pub. Friendly vibe and good range of drinks. I suggest getting a spot upstairs if you can, really cosy and comfortable. Great location for the rest of Soho, China Town, theatre land etc.
R. B. -. E. k.
This is a real gem in Soho.
Very intimate and interesting place to sit have a bite to eat and a drink.
Very friendly staff and a great atmosphere.
P. M.
An old haunt of mine since the 1980's I always visit this cosy central Soho bar. Very busy with a great bohemian atmosphere I always bump in to a familiar face or a celebrity or two. Back in the day a hub for celebs like Shane MacGowan and Francis Bacon! Great meeting place before the theatre.
M. M.
As my friend described it, the real soul of Soho. Friendly and funny staff. Enjoyed how everyone interacted with each other and with people walking by :)
N.
Love this place - perfect spot for a few glasses of wine in the heart of soho. Very nice selection. Can't wait to visit again after the pandemic.
T. S. W.
Perfect pub, crowded but with good reason. Staff are friendly and usually the same people which makes it feel personal and very welcoming. The Soho personality that makes it worth the Central prices. The people there make it though- everyone’s up for a chat, it’s a genuine community hub. One of the few places I don’t mind waiting for a friend in alone.
S. D.
I was taken here by some old school Londoners my first time visiting the city and have been back many times since. The gem of Soho pubs. The clientele makes the place, reasonable prices and consistent service keep it going. Here you will find the heart and soul of London: artists, niche experts, history buffs and eccentrics... professional drinkers with an eye for things unique and odd. Never a dull (or sober) moment at the French.
A. M.
Routinely rammed and absolutely fantastic. Legitimate wine selection, very good quality cidre, trashy (and awesome) snacks. Rarely room to sit, quite often squashed when standing. Couldn't care less. Great spot.
f. f.
No phones to ensure good conversation, great french cider and good company.... Brilliant find
R. R.
Fabulous, old-school pub. A classic. The restaurant portion is fabulous and well-worth the wait/reservations. Very classic French cooking done with impeccable ingredients and technique.
P. S.
Drinking here for 40 years, I couldn't tip this boozer to anyone but drunken stag parties on weekend evenings. If you want to feel its essence now, try a double vodka at 11:45 am on a Tuesday.
R. E.
Great authentic Soho pub. Doesn’t serve Fosters or Aperol, just great French wine and lager. Highly recommended for a quick drink or a longer session!!
A. D.
This is a really great bar, compact but with a room and bar upstairs too. All traditional decor and friendly staff and punters. They serve wine, have a huge range of champagne and beer only by the half pint. Located on Dean Street (off Shaftesbury Avenue) near the corner with Romilly Street.
M. “. O. K.
Lovely pub with a strict half pints only rule, except on 1 April when you can buy a pint. Always busy and there's a good chance you'll spot a famous face or two. Get a big bottle of cider to share, its good value for money and hellish tasty.
A. v. C.
Very small place, a bit cramped, but it wa fun enough. Beer gets served only in half-pints, but those halves are very costly. Not a place for those short of cash, but otherwise an all right bar.
R. W.
A great little pub serving French beer on tap in half pint glasses. Not overpriced at all by soho standards. Always a few interesting people drinking here making for a great atmosphere and very friendly service.
If your out drinking in soho don't walk past this pub.
A. F. C.
This bar is one of my favorite spots not just in London but in the world. It has a great historical feel to it, with the decor and the stemware, and their loyalty to wine brands like Hugel, (which they have been carrying for decades). I've never been once where I haven't met an interesting stranger and struck up a chat and along with their quaffable libations, make this a must-go every time I'm in London.
*Only pour half-pints
*Great Kir Royal
*Great post-work spot
S. P.
An absolute classic Soho pub. Always half pints and always full of the most eclectic and enigmatic people. One time, I'm stood next to Robert Plants, the next, Stephen Merchant, the next Gale Porter. An experience as much as a watering hole. *I cannot guarantee that you'll stand next to a celebrity :)
H. F.
Good 'old fashioned' pub.
L. D. M.
My favorite bar in Soho. Better be here early if you want seats! Beers are served in half pint glasses which is charming (wine glasses are also very small). Cool photos everywhere as well.
G. C.
Nothing queer as folk, eclectic mix and very enjoyable. Made better by the fact you can't buy a pint only halves, so there's a big wine and spirits crowd in here.
E. d. J.
Nice atmosphere. Very oldy worldy and lots of traditional pub charm. Two levels which is nice for when it gets crammed. They only serve beers and ales in bottles and half pints, which kinda sucks.
D. S. K.
Beer Pub and Wine only no mixed cocktails. Great atmosphere.
P. B.
No review can do this place Justice this is what you call bar profection. It's been they're years and I hope it remained so for many many more. I always visit this place when I'm in Soho.🍾
S. M.
Love this place. Old school. Always crowded, but usually get a stool at the open window to watch the world go by with either a glass of red or better still, a large bottle of Breton cider for two. Usually end up chatting to someone here, it's that kind of place.
P. 3. M.
Very cool cozy pub
J. S.
If you like half pints this is the place for you!
Only seven halves but that'd be charm. If you are visiting london come here, impresses the girls ;)
A. P.
Amazing. Came here March 18th bc it was the last place open in soho before lock down (literally) and they treated us so well. Incredible meal and better staff hope you all are well!!
A. K.
lovely little suntrap and perfect counter to the Soho based boozer. No pints means this is quieter than the surrounding pubs, but all the better for it. Head here if you want to get away from everything else and enjoy a little continental style drinking in a calm oasis surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Soho
G. K.
Good friendly crowd. Roped off smoking area on street works well.
The upstairs room for our private function was lovely, and we were made feel very very welcome.
S. D.
Stubborn, inflexible, archaic and with not enough seats...but the French House is a Soho institution and I wouldn't have it any other way. I've been coming here irregularly for years and it's always packed on a Friday night, mobiles are always frowned upon (a fine thing in these verbose times) and it's always, always fun. It's a little pub with lots of history and personality - the walls are full of pictures of previous booze-happy patrons, and there's always someone in the corner that you half recognise from a broadsheet spread. You can't order a full pint at the bar (only halves) and it's busier than ever now that upstairs has got very trendy, but this place is great for sunny days (sitting on Dean Street) or for visitors, keen to see an authentic British boozer.
D. A.
I'm not giving five star just because some of the staff look bored or angry. Not sure why, cause the little pub works like a charm. Great selection of cheap wines and spirits. If only they would make you feel a bit more comfortable when you're there and not looking at you like you're ruining their day.
S. H.
Very friendly place
Nice atmosphere
G. C.
Great traditional pub
T. R.
Quirky little historic bar across two floors, with a bunch of space out on the street too, to enjoy beers served by the half and a whole bunch of wines that are pretty reasonably priced. It gets busy, so be prepared to just squeeze in where you can!
P. S.
The French House was owned by a Belgian. Of course, we Brits can't tell a Belgian from a bell-boy, so the former York Minster got known by the proprietor's language, not his nationality. It's the French House!
There were a lot of Free French customers, during WW11. Indeed, a photo of Charles de Gaulle sits on a high shelf, behind the bar.
Use of mobile phones is banned, but for the very good reason that the current owner seeks to promote, and succeeds in promoting, genial conversation amongst all comers, together with the more regular clientele of actors and writers.
Don't be put off by the arty tendency. They're never snooty. I doubt if the boss would tolerate anyone misbehaving like that, anyway, but they're alright people, so no problems!
'The French' is in Soho, right enough, but it's far enough away from the Cambridge Square end of the village to escape from the flocking tourists in general, and silly blokes suffering from 'Away from the Wife Syndrome'.
The place is small and popular, so it gets crowded, but people 'rub on' in an 'in the same boat' kind of way.
'The French' has always been a great place and looks set to remain so for another grateful generation of conversationalists, with a liking for great, well chosen, wine, cider and beers by the half pint.
Vive La French!
W. M. n.
Lovely staff and a good place to soak up the atmosphere
R. H. G.
A grown up adult pub. No music, TV, one arm bandits, idiots shouting into their mobile phones (banned), pint measures. They have a tiny bar with excellent service and reasonable prices. A good selection of Wines and continental beers including authentic Cidre Breton. They've recently opened a cosy little bar upstairs.
J. H.
One of the few institutions of Soho's heyday which has survived. Of course it isn't quite what it used to be - nowhere in Soho is - but on a recent visit I got the sense it still does have a few characters, and there is at least an air of a time when eccentricity was not in such short supply.
As no doubt documented elsewhere, you can only order half pints here. I also recommend having a pastis on the side.
G. B.
Outstanding and there very own cider is unbelievabley good!!!
S. D.
Great bar with loads of character, downstairs can be a bit crowded but there is a great space upstairs where you can share a litre bottle of cider and share your woes, this place is everything that is good about boozing in London. Who needs to be able to order a full pint of beer?
F. S.
Quirky little Soho gem - the bar is cosy and bustling, the dining room upstairs feels truly special. Make sure you save some room for dessert - the madeleines are an otherworldly experience!
S. D.
Seeked this pub out based purely on the francophile and bohemian reputation I had read about, have to say was left feeling disappointed. Decor was nice with a French styling, lots of art hanging on the wall, but the atmosphere seemed no different to any other Soho city centre pubs. The no tech rule was most definitely not being adhered, lots of people on their phones. Bar staff seemed a bit stressed and curt. Maybe on a very busy Saturday afternoon it can easily lose its character with the throng passing through.
J. M.
One of my favorite place in London. Cheap drinks, good wine and great atmosphere. And a beautiful location. Perfect place!!
S. J. B.
Like it here nice pub use to only serve half pints but great news they now serve pints. Always a friendly welcome from the staff.
D. M.
Cosy, quaint, great cheese and wines. The red by the glass is classically easy drinking, definitely worth revisiting...a nightmare finding a seat but that's part of the charm.
P. A.
Really unusual small pub with an Anglo French vibe. No music just great conversation. Good range of beers only available as halves. Well worth a visit.
S. L.
I went there in the afternoon with a friend for a catch up drink. There was almost no-one there so we had the full attention of the bar attendant.. she was friendly and attentive. I had been curious about the place as I know it's a bit of a Soho icon, I was not disappointed.
J. W.
Always full of TV and theatre folk and buzzing, this bar's selling point is the atmosphere. The staff and regulars are all friends and after one night squeezed into a corner you will be too. Go upstairs for more seating and a welcome breeze through the windows, outside of which the French flag flies. Good selection of wine and beer, bar snacks and relatively cheap.
R. M.
The idea is to copy the small bar/restaurants of Venice, which specialise in good & unpretentious food & drinks. Well, since my last visit it seems that the owners have taken a change of direction. The wrong direction. All the little cheap little starters are gone & the main have about doubled in price. The food now is ordinary and doesn’t match the prices asked. Service is good, at least...
M. P.
My favourite boozer in London. A proper drinkers' pub, largely for an eclectic mix of people who can usually string more than two words together (at least when reasonably sober) and enjoy good conversation with all-comers - however, NOT for vomitarians, loud-mouthed 'screechers' or millennials who can't get their faces out of their phones and persist with the narcissism of endless selfies. No music, no mobile phones, no pints and no prejudices - much preferred.
Also, great Bloody Mary, good Breton French cider and a reasonable selection of wines by the glass and bottle. Excellent simple food at lunch times (till 4pm) both upstairs and downstairs. Friendly bar staff.
M. N.
Honestly, honestly our most favourite place to eat in London. Simply divine!
M. P.
Great food , simple and well executed. Loved the goats curd on toast with garlic bulb. very friendly service. Nothing pretentious. Will be returning soon
R. G.
A small but historic pub with an old fashioned interior. Leans towards the expensive side but reasonable for Soho. As the name implies has a good selection of french larger and ales and one of the few places you can get both green and yellow châteauroux. Attracts an older crowd mostly.
s. m.
Wonderful but bijoux bar, steeped in history and kind enough to serve Ricard as you like it. Mostly wine, also beer but served in halves
C. J.
Just all good! The salt cod beignets are wonderful, the Barnsley chop very satisfying and the Brest de Paris delightful! Lovely service too from our cool, kind and knowledgeable waitress. Can't wait to go back!
J. D.
Possibly the best "people watching" venue in the West End as the cliente is so diverse. Friendly and efficient staff and seldom dull moments; unique, amazing and lovely in equal measure.
R. P.
Everyone working here is always so nice, friendly and welcoming. Always worth calling in for a beer. Little gem in soho.
D. J.
Been there for lunch recently. Loveliest staff, perfect lamb, great wine, superb atmosphere, what else do I want!!?
No wonder why Francis Bacon used to hang out here!!
C. D.
I love this pub. Still has a bit of a bohemian air about it which most of soho (as far as i know) has lost. Can be quite busy at times. Friendly staff and clientele alike
G. T.
Always a great buzzy place. Great staff.
M. H.
The staff can be a bit direct, but they come from a different era as does the bar. It is said that Edith Piaf and Charles de Gaul drank here in the 1940s. The wine is good today and you can wile the time talking politics with strangers if you want. I love hiding here when London gets too much and it reminds me of a different time. In summer you can stand outside and it is a shame that it is not open longer than 11pm. The horrid bars next door are aloud, so why not this place? Oh well, enjoy it when it is open.
M.
Not bad for a cosy sitdown with friends, didnt try the food. Just a lot of beers. Nice staff even on a busy saturday night they keep their game faces on. I really enjoyed the interiors and the music.
R. F.
My favourite bar in Soho. Go with friends, grab a large bottle of french cidre and some glasses and enjoy. They also have a upstairs bar where it is rrally lovely to sit by the window and watch the world go by.
A. S.
Small but good atmosphere inside. Not too badly priced for drinks. Can't buy pints though, only halves or bottles
M. D.
Small and quirky with a French flavour. Staff that served us was lovely. A really nice place to go for a drink. They serve the drinks in half pints as is the French way.
C. R.
Absolutely stunning food and a lovely team. Can’t recommend enough!
R. N.
Small and characterful with the oddest selection of photographs and the rule against mobile phones, this place exudes an intimate charm. I stood outside the entire time and inhaled wads of second-hand cigarette smoke, yet it was the £8 glass of Merlot I had that was unforgiveable.
J. D.
Not your typical English Pub (but that's kind of the point I guess)
A real institute of a Pub, you're guaranteed to have great (sometimes just weird) conversations with real characters in this place, no doubt lubricated by plenty of alcohol. The drinks aren't fancy, but you'll come here for the conversation and to people watch more so than to have a quiet drink.
The couple who run the place are great people, always friendly and welcoming, as are the staff. You'll be shoulder to shoulder in this place, partly due to its size (but also because it's always busy) so you can expect to get to know a few people here.
Last time I was here an old Irishman dressed to the nines (as can be the case with the customers here - often coming from the theaters or from work nearby) - started hitting on a young northern lady (who later turned out to be his employee) who, as a distraction, started a conversation with me about Arsenal (Coincidentally my team / North London Football Club). This turned out to be his favorite topic of interest too (part of me began to wonder if they were about to scam me in someway at this point - but they turned out just to be friendly people having a drink after work) and he eloquently/drunkenly offered up "insider tips" on the direction the club was talking, in what can only be described as a flamboyant and poetic vernacular - I can't say he was right, but it was certainly more entertaining than your usual pub chat with a stranger. I imagine this sort of thing happens here a lot.
Expect: Real Londoners, Friendly Drunk Business People, Friendly Drunk West End People, Lost Tourists, Beggars, Simple Drinks, Great Conversations That You Won't Remember The Next Day, and Wood Paneling.
A. G.
It's a small and lively place, they offer only half pints, but they have good beers (amongst the usual kroeneberg). I recommend to try the bottled cidre :)
M. C.
Fabulous proper booze right in the heart of Soho. Love it.
D. T.
Wonderful pub, does it have a 'half pint licence'? I know a pub on the Gower that does, a legacy from WWI. Clearly loads of history and more being made every day. You must visit, an institution!
L. P. G.
Always loved this place.. pity about the waiter tonight who was high, picking fights with patrons and threw an ashtray at us..
G. G.
Great little pub, very Boho, only serve beer in halves (a tradition for over 100 years), but happy to take orders of two halves of Guinness.
d. V. z.
you will know instinctively if this is your sort of place. half pints only, no music, no tv, no phones allowed. good selection of wines and spirits as well as great food during the week between 12 and 4. the coq au vin is sublime.
J. R.
Superb characterful Soho pub. Can't help thinking the half pint and no phones thing is a gimmick but it doesn't matter, it's rare to find somewhere so unusual and original in London.
w. j.
Best Pub in London!!
R. G.
Quaint little bar on Dean Street, what's not to like, great bespoke and a variety of beers (unlike All-Bar-None) and very cosy (otherwise small ;) ) but a very friendly clientele. Very limited seating inside so you can talk to your neighbor very easily or eavesdrop on someone else's conversation, if you are bored of your friend's current political rhetoric. Extra star is for the management of the pavement with a separation, respecting the residents of SoHo. The Security prevents people from spilling on to the street. Great!! we need more places like this.
G. G.
Great old boozer set smack in the middle of Soho
J. H.
One of the funnest pubs in Soho. They sell beer by halves, so I usually get a bottle of wine. Marvellous fun, full of characters, meet and talk with as many as you can.
l. e.
Lovely food cooked well. The Barnsley Chop was delicious followed by an amazing Paris-Brest. Yum!
J. G. B.
One of my favourite places to go to have a delicious red wine and either watch the world go by, or catch up with friends. Can be wonderfully romantic or bustling with locals and tourists.
J. B.
Fantastic friendly local pub with great clientele. Leslie the Landlady so welcoming will definitely be going back next time in London.
s. g.
Crowded but full of character. Resting actors and fading pop stars. All normal except for tourists! Great fun. No time to eat unfortunately.
J. S.
Crowded but it was a Friday night. Had trouble to find a seat but it's really tiny and cosy. Great selection of drinks and really cosy. I live the fact that there is a downstairs and an upstairs bar.
M. C.
Properly interesting pub. Locals are welcoming. Cider by the bottle is excellent. Thoroughly enjoyable evening!
G. F.
Super busy but really nice. Beers served in hf pints for authentic French vibes. A good place in Soho.
D. M. C.
Fab place love the atmosphere and staff
S. T.
Brilliant food and brilliant staff - highly recommend
P. Z.
One of last places of old Soho with real characters at the bar. Serves Metor beer. Excellent Hugel wine at reasonable prices. Vibrant.
C. H.
Great busy Soho pub. Great atmosphere, bar upstairs was reserved for our friends birthday gathering. Excellent!!
B. B. (.
It's an Institution. It's quirky and always full of locals. Good selection of beers & wine & bubbles. Another favourite when visiting London
R. S.
Busy atmospheric soho bar with great history. Only serves beer in half pint measures...
Well worth a visit
S. M.
Cozy little pub, good lager, only it's a little too popular for its own good. You'll be shouldering past people just to order a drink.
A. R.
All three courses were superb I had baked monk fish something I'd not normally try but wow it was a treat and the bread and butter budding to die for
L. W. (.
Bit of a hidden gem this on Dean St Soho...deffo worth a visit.
O. T.
Went there on "steak frites Thursday" the food was amazing, and the staff very friendly. Cool intimate atmosphere in the restaurant space upstairs
D. R.
Tiny little pub but loaded with ambience. There is a restaurant upstairs which I didn't visit, but on the way to the ladies saw that it was packed, which can only be a good sign.
L. A.
I bought my partners parents here and it really impressed them. They loved the food. It was my second time visiting but because the food is so good, it came to mind when I needed to impress.
M. M.
Classic cutting edge soho, slightly white centric but still an institution in a rapidly changing soho
N. L.
A great pub allegedly where the French met upstairs to plan the overthrowing of Hitler in Europe. Great beer and always ver busy with a few famous faces in the crowd.
S. F. H.
Stood outside as it was a really nice day. Tried a couple of bottles of their Britanny cider. Really refreshing. Staff were friendly enough too.
B. S.
This place is always full to overflowing. Packed with drunks, suits and artists. They will only serve you half pints and don't event think about getting your phone out. This place is strictly for drinking.
M. D.
This is a nice pub, always full if nice and relaxed people ideal to chill out with your friends in trendy Soho. Try the Apple cider, it is amazing
S. I.
Excellent restaurant great service superb food a must visit
M. O.
This is a tiny pub with huge atmosphere.
Very nice place to share a couple of half pints, because they're French.
J.
Always rammed, but with good reason. Plenty of history and characters at the bar. Try and get in a corner and knock back a few bottles of Breton cider while people watching.
J. T.
Great pub for a different drink, beers only by half pint, good wine and French style cider, always a good buzz and a friendly crowd
R. J.
interesting selection of beers, small bar so feels pretty packed inside when it starts to get busy
T. F.
Frozen in time in a good way :)
A. I.
Always rammed and full of atmosphere. One of my fave places in London for a glass of red or french beer. GO if your in Soho.
w. t.
Doesn't get much better for central London. Prices a bit steep but what's a quid more a pint for the surroundings?
S. F.
Soho institution. Half pints of lager crammed in the pub or lined up on the pavement. Just a great place to have beer.
E. I.
The vibe and the quality of crowd is nice though wine was not at the best. If you have a contactless card, you can save up to 20 minutes by passing it through the bartender.
D. P.
What can I say? A legend in anyone's lunch time! Since 1917 London's premier pub!
Home from home for Brendan Behan, Dylan Thomas, Nina Hammett, Francis Bacon, Daniel Farson - and so many others (including your humble servant!)
Deserves 7 stars, like L'Auberge de la Vierge Noire in Brussels (sadly, now gone due to Ethnic Cleansing! Can't be because of a lack of Black Virgins!)
T. O.
Much like Charles de Gaulle I reckon this to be one of the finest establishments in the land.
c. p.
Adored polpetto, almost everything we ate was fantastic and the place has a great vibe. I would probably skip the cicheti (small snacks) and head for the sharing plates. Particular stand outs for me included the chili/garlic prawns, the steak with white truffle sauce and the zucchini fries, soo much better than the wodgy ,greasy things you get at Byron. The only duff note was the salad of pea, fennel and ricotta which didn't have much fennel flavour and was fairly bland. I think the vegetable and salad section could stand improving most things on this section were carbs or deep fried, some proper veggies would be nice. Also getting a special shout out from me is the tiramisu, one of the best I've ever eaten but it came in a tiny shot glass, I had serious dessert envy when I saw the massive slice of flourless chocolate cake my friend got. Next tiem I'm getting two of the tiramisu!!
Be warned tables are very close together, be prepared to hear intimate details from your neighbours!
K. 1.
Compact bar hung with photos, where literary crowd prefer wine to beer and embrace the no-tech rule.
R. F.
A great bar in Dean street. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere. A nice pub in a nice area frequented by tourists and locals.
D. A.
Excellent and well priced french spot serving pretty good 'tarte flambe', alsatian beers, meat and cheese boards, and excellent desserts (I've tried their apple pie and found it pretty good!) - A visit here is highly recommended -
M. K.
Small and cosy place.. the beer I had here was the best I tasted so far.
P. M.
Brilliant little bar, with a tremendous atmosphere even when half empty. Lots of history too
T. D.
Great pub and special atmosphere for Soho. Good wine. Beware the strong beer upstairs!
T. S.
It's always packed full after work - that's why it's so good. Nice selection of not overpriced wines and a great French atmosphere
J. P.
Wonderful location near to China Town. Great sharing plates. Will definitely be going back to try the trademark Polpetti (baby octopus) and the soft shell crab. Amazing flourless chocolate cake is a must.
A. M.
Very different drinking experience now but was locked after by Billy and Phil. Just can't seem to leave half sober.
D. L.
Nice enough pub always rammed full of people so can be hard to move about, get a drink or talk to anyone. Decent prices for the area.
I. B.
Nothing wrong with the place but it's tiny and get extremely crowded. We had to drink outside all evening in the very tight spot within pub banners
G. K.
Without doubt the best bar in Soho, the proper Soho, the Soho before the developers moved in. Steeped in history and run by an excellent team with a good selection of wine. Can't fault it!!!
K. C.
One of my favourite bars in London. No phones allowed. Beers served in halves. Great staff.
D. O.
Fabulous bar where beer is only served in half pints. Much of the interior is original too.
F. G.
Great historic pub with bohemian crowd. Even the house wine is nice!
R. G.
A small but historic pub with an old fashioned interior. Leans towards the expensive side but reasonable for Soho. As the name implies has a good selection of french larger and ales and one of the few places you can get both green and yellow châteauroux. Attracts an older crowd mostly.
T. J.

Great bar with loads of character, downstairs can be a bit crowded but there is a great space upstairs where you can share a litre bottle of cider and share your woes, this place is everything that is good about boozing in London. Who needs to be able to order a full pint of beer?
P. A.
A great place to have a drink with friends
D. T.
Wonderful pub, does it have a 'half pint licence'? I know a pub on the Gower that does, a legacy from WWI. Clearly loads of history and more being made every day. You must visit, an institution!
