Reviews of The Hare & Billet
N. D.
Great place for an evening out, had a really good time and patrons were friendly enough. Had a meal in the restaurant and for general pub grub its not that bad, but don't expect high restaurant quality. Definitely will visit again for a night out.
S. H.
First time we walked in was warm, friendly and a great
Atmosphere. The staff were very helpful even though they were super busy, definitely going back but this time we going to book a table for eats. Oh yes! The entertainment was superb, just the right style for the ambiance… Fab time had by all …😁👍
P. F.
Wonderfully good pub for people with dogs. Ours reacted to another yappy dog and the staff happily showed us to a quieter area where the dogs couldn't see each other. Then food and drink were both great, highly recommended.
N. S.
A great pub with amazing staff and really great food. The ribeye steak was exceptional as was the soft shell crab starter and sticky toffee pudding dessert. Highly recommend
l. k.
The best pub to visit on a Friday night. The live music was brilliant, such a good atmosphere. The food is also delicious and they have a brilliant wine list
L. D.
A great place to go and have a meal and a drink. The staff were great and so friendly. The place was disability friendly with the staff checking that I was ok. Will definitely be going back soon. So rare to find a place as good as this with great staff.
D. F.
A group of 12 of us came here for a get together (meant to be for Xmas but had to rearrange due to covid) and had a great time. We were probably quite a rowdy and excitable group (just happy to be together after a long time) and maybe a bit demanding (sorry!) But I'd like to say thanks to all the staff who served us...one guy in particular whose name I can't remember really went out of his way to make sure we were all happy. The food and drinks were great...the camembert sharer was delicious and most people enjoyed their food (although the few people who had the fish and chips weren't quite as happy).

This place is lovely, warm and welcoming staff are friendly and talk with you. Natalia is wonderful made us feel at home and welcomed that's including the huge cane corso puppy. Definitely a place to visit
K. H.
My 2nd time here for Sunday roast and it was just as fantastic as the first. Everything was cooked just right and didn't last very long. Staff are lovely and don't leave you waiting around. Will definitely come back.
G. B.
Good beers on tap here with cosy feel. Poor selection of food for vegetarians and vegans unlike what there used to be.
You should have some pub style food for vegans again not just one burger. Your vegan fish and chips was a great option
C.
Best pub on the heath for food. Menu is excellent with really good vegetarian and vegan options, especially the Sunday roast. Staff are lovely - always a nice spot but looks lovely since recent renovation.
D. J.
Nice atmosphere and friendly professional staff. The Sunday roast (The trio of roast meats for £23) was a bit tired as we ate around 7pm. The meat was great, but the vegetables tasted like they had come from a frozen pack and the gravy, like it was made from granules. The yorkshire pudding had dried out and was too crunchy. The condiments (creamed horseradish and bread sauce) were good.
J. A.
The scotch eggs 🥚 are out of this world. Very dog friendly pub! Nice vibe - staff are lovely 😊
A. A.
A lively environment with a friendly welcome. Children and dogs catered for and present during my visit: all well behaved and under control. Great variety of food on offer but the shining stars are the staff who provide an exceptional level of service.
S. G.
I missed my booking due to Covid. They proactively contacted me to carry over my deposit and when I finally went the staff were second to none. This is customer service at its finest.

A local pub that’s so much more.
The Hare & Billet is a great spot on the heath that boasts a gastro menu that delivers on flavour in a big way. I had a deftly executed sea bass with chorizo; the fish was fresh and flaked every so delicately and the pan roasted skin was crisped to perfection. New potatoes were browned and well salted. I’ve also had the Sunday Roast on another occasion and a noticeable difference was how cohesive the different components on the plate were. The carrots were stewed in the beef jus and the hispi cabbages were chargrilled, techniques that one wouldn’t ordinarily see in a typical pub roast. Needless to say, the roast beef was succulent and nicely done.
Staff are warm and friendly; super attentive and efficient too.
Reserve ahead as it gets busy. No surprises there.

This really is one of the best pubs in London that I've been to. The food is excellent and definitely worth visiting for that alone - particular shout-out to the Turner and George burger which is among the best of any pub burger I've ever had (I've had it twice now, that statement really holds up). The atmosphere inside is lovely and warm, with a clean wooden interior combined with a wall of dog pictures. Staff are friendly and follow COVID restrictions well. Other food on offer is excellent too, with a wonderful soft shell crab starter and Mac and Cheese bites. Sticky toffee pudding is delightful. Fish and chips come in an enormous portion and are yummy. You may find you self needing to book as it's so busy - but it's totally justified. Beers are also varied, perhaps could host more craft but they do have nice ales. A local favourite, they'll see me again many more times as long as I live nearby.
E. M.
Always a good time in here. The food is quite expensive but usually really good. The best bit is the range of bitters on the pumps, all really well looked after.
G. M.
Great night out with the kids, it was quiet (except for us😁), but the staff seemed a little bored. Probably livelier in summer. Would recommend as long as the sun was out.
A. W.
Food excellent. Hopefully the guest beers remain good. Have been a couple not on recently which was mildly disappointing. Look out for lots of dogs and the occasional singer both of which I love but not to everyone's taste
M. V.
Great food, loved their starter sharer with padron peppers and fried tofu as well as the sea bass with samphire. Great house ale too. A hidden Blackheath gem.
M. W.
Came here just before Christmas and the place was warm, friendly and cosy. Good beers and great food and the waiters and waitresses were second to none. Thank you!
S. A.
Very accomodating of the staff to find us a table for lunch. Food was lovely, took a little while to come out but understandable with a busy pub
K. C.
Had a lovely lunch with a friend here yesterday. I had sea bass, she had lamb, and both meals were lovely. We both had puddings too. I had the posset with poached strawberries and she had the brownie. Service was friendly, attentive but not at all in your face, just perfect, really. Worth every penny. We'll definitely be back again, especially since the restaurant is now completely dog-friendly, rather than just on certain tables. Would definitely recommend.
A. B.
This is the most friendly pub I have been to for a while, great staff, super dog-loving and friendly.
A. A.
Awesome pub for a meet up with friends, especially on a warm summers day. You can chill with your drink outside and enjoy the views of the Heath. The Sunday roast is pretty solid too. Look at it.
A. P.
Went for Sunday lunch. Amazing food busy place so book ahead. Staff were busy but polite.
Baked camembert starter just what was needed after a brisk walk. Shared between three was enough because the Roasts are very filling ........ very!
Half a roast chicken almost too much, would have been just as happy with a quarter chicken and more veg! Cooked to perfection as was the roast pork with crackling. Fish and chips also a winner with crispy beer battered fish.
Highly recommend this place.
L. R.
Best pub on the heath.
Warm and cosy.
Friendly bar staff.
Good food and excellent drink selection.
Recommended.

Hare & Billet is a lovely dog friendly pub. They always have treats for the dogs and I feel like every member of staff just love dogs. The pub has a great family vibe, it is a place for you to go to chilly out and relax. Hare & Billet is my favourite pub in Blackheath, the staff are very friendly and attentive, much better service then O’Neill’s, The Crown or The Railway.
B. L.
Wonderful food. The staff are friendly. I'm told the beers are good by my boyfriend and dad! Dog friendly pub and always busy!
J. A.
Lovely pub with high quality food and great service by hard working staff. Went for the weekly Wednesday quiz which is equally good!
J. W.
After the, now usual, torturous procedure to enter we were told our table wasn't yet available. But the staff found another table to park us at while we looked over the drinks menu. Then to our table which had great view of the heath. Our 90 minutes flew by but the staff then found us another table for 30 minutes.
Didn't eat so can't comment on the food. The wine list is short with some good bottles.
Main plus is the staff. Friendly and made sure it was a memorable afternoon.
H. v.
Love this cosy intimate Pub with some tasty snacks served here. Nice outside bench seating with beautiful views by pond opposite pub.
C. G.
Great selection of drinks, staff were ok, not overly friendly. Avoid on a Sunday if you haven't book as they won't let you sit down, even if the table isn't needed till later on
C. T.
Super friendly staff. Great food great service. My dog loves it (the little Frenchie). Glad this is our local
m. o.
Excellent service great food wonderful staff made us all very welcome service outstanding
Thank you to you all x
T. P.
Food and service was very good and I had a lovely evening. However the lack of choice for the mains was a let down only 2 burgers, fish and chips or steak!
K. S.
Arguably one of the best Sunday roasts I've ever had. Great value for money and atmosphere on a Sunday. Thanks to Natalia for her wonderful service.
D. S.
Wonderful little pub, lovely food, great friendly service. Dogs are encouraged with bowls of water and the odd treat offered to very good boys and girls. Would highly recommend for a chilled catch up with friends or colleagues. I hear their sunday roast is very good, will have to try it out some time.
C. C.
Currently being refurbished ready for Sept 2021, so I'll focus on the people and the food.
Good service with a nice Sunday selection; roasts are massive and the wine list isn't bad either. I recommend their pick of Colchagua Valley merlot. The desserts are also well done and neatly presented — particularly liked the pairing of coffee ice cream and chocolate brownie.
Looking forward to seeing how the refurb turns out.
D. T.
An absolutely stunning building, right next to Blackheath common and Greenwich Royal Park. Very much a community pub with loads of people chatting away and generally having a great time. Everyone seems to be coping with Covid in good humour and respect for staff and other customers. Please help save the pond (see photos) and make a donation. Look at the photo wall and realise that humans are only the second preferred customer. This is a canine pub! A really enjoyable place to call in and make your day.
S.
I've traditionally been a fan of the Hare & Billet and have eaten here many times over the last 5 - 6 years. It's generally been the best Sunday Roast in Blackheath, the pub has been well managed, there is always a good selection of beers on tap and they're really dog friendly. This time I went with someone who has food intolerances and it all felt like a bit too much effort for the staff, who were overstretched. What was supposed to be a relaxing opportunity not to cook, turned into a bit of a stressful highly fraught ordering experience as we attempted to decipher the allergens menu.
M. S.
A great pub right by the heath. You can drink outside of you like, there's a great menu and the food is delicious. A really good selection of drinks.
L. C. M.
High quality food, although kind of pricey. Good selection of lagers and ales on tap.
P. M.
Perfect hosts, a fantastic selection of beers including guest ones and an extensive food menu. Thank you so much.
A. P.
We’re so happy lockdown is over and we can visit the Hare and Billet again. Our favorite pub in the neighborhood.
Food is always good. Staff is always friendly. Our dog loves it in there. You can’t go wrong!
M. A.
A cosy pub. Background music, food. Be careful when going to the loos (up on the 3rd floor! And stairs a bit slippery) Enjoyed sitting in a comfy sofa while sipping my pink Gin, but not an all nighter pub for me
.I need a bit more life. Apparently, there's live music on a Friday, so may visit again to check it out.
R. O.
Love this pub. Fantastic food. Flat iron chicken is the bomb 💣
R. H.
We had a party at the Hare and Billet over the weekend and it was absolutely fab. The manager clearly put so much effort and attention on the day and went over and above. Thank you for a great afternoon!
R. R.
Really very good food. Very nice atmosphere and service. All male bar staff must sport man-buns!
J. L.
Great roast! Such friendly customer service, and the wandle pale ale on tap is worth coming for alone. It’s very cute inside, and in a very good location outside of the hustle and bustle. My wife and I have been looking for our regular local since moving, and now we’ve found it!
i. c.
A couple of pints of Old Dairy and a well cooked burger, slightly pink in the middle. Perfect. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, comfortable and covid compliant. Very pleasant.
O. S.
Great pub, friendly staff, good food!
G. H.
One of the best Sunday roasts I’ve had in ages. Staff really friendly and accommodating! Great food, great wine, great ales. Lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back!
P. P.
Great pub with a country pub feel. Really friendly staff with a good standard of food. Reasonably priced but I'm not a big lover of a service charge! Forgot to mention it's dog friendly so I could say it's four star but it's not to everyone choice.
T. S.
Lovely pub and excellent food, highly recommended.
S. B.
Homely and refreshingly grown up drinking establishment on the edge of the heath. Great food.
M. T.
Manager friendly and sociable
Quiet during daytime
Plenty of covers
M. M.
Best pub in Blackheath. Often have evening entertainment.
M. B.
Lovely pub with a great selection of beers. On a summers night nothing is better than taking a beer and sitting on the heath and watching a sunset - bliss.
However, my partner both live together and the waitress made us both register (covid) and was such a jobsworth about it. No other bar or restaurant has made my friends and I do this
M. D.
Top pub in Blackheath. Nice decor and good beer range.
J. C.
The team were accommodative to the time switch requested and were overall friendly. We went for the Sunday roast - opting for the pork and the beef. The meat itself was not necessarily that well made, with the beef being very chewy and cooked poorly - there was also quite a lot of fat on the slices that were given. The pork was also slightly overcooked and was incredibly dry in the middle. The trimmings were of okay standard.
C. D.
One of the most friendly pubs for dogs in the area that serves a good Sunday roast. The food menu is always on par.
S. T.
Great pub with super character and atmosphere. Looked after exceptionally well by the friendly staff. Loved the whole evening. It started my son's wedding weekend off perfectly. Thank you!
M. B.
The Sunday lunch is amazing. Loved everything we had.
2 years later food is still awesome and atmosphere great
C. W.
Best place in the area for a Sunday roast
E. C.
Food always good, usually a great beer selection (maybe a bit reduced due to covid?) and the best one-way system and track & trace set up of any pub that I've seen. Also great for take away beer to drink on Blackheath. Very dog friendly!
C. H.
Amazing Sunday roast, lovely staff, and super dog friendly. Will visit again!
D. S.
More selection of beers and ales than any pub in the area. Food is best in the area.. bit pricey though.
S. S.
A great find. Lovely welcome and serving great range of beers.
O. O.
Nice relaxing pub for the week end with great burgers and other healthier options.
K. A.
Lovely pub with a good selection of craft beers and selection of food. Came here Sunday evening for a roast dinner with friends, ordered roast beef for around 17 quid, and the portions size and quality made it great value! The staff were very friendly and didn't hurry us out of our table either.
Also enjoyed nice touches like blankets and dog treats for the pub's four-legged customers, and the nice mixture of decor throughout the place. Will definitely come again!
P. O.
Had a meal last night and drinks. We hadn’t realised that our booking was only worth two hours but after expressing our dismay staff found us a new table. Very attentive and food was great. They did their very best to make sure we had a good night.
P. W.
A really friendly "local" with excellent menu, drinks and service.
R. E.
Great pub
After a long wet and windy walk across blackheath common this pub was a very welcome rest.
We did book which helped a lot and got seated almost exactly on time and helped ourselves to an awesome Sunday lunch of chicken and beef.
Edit: just had dinner there again tonight for Xmas Eve. Again, brilliance, Nathaniel and Robert are great barman / restaurant managers, place was buzzing and the food was excellent. Highly, again, recommend.
J. B.
If the pub having been featured in a Garfield film didn't put me off drinking there then covid restrictions certainly won't. I hadn't eaten in the H&B since it reopened after lockdown but did so a couple of days ago on a Saturday evening. The staff were warm and welcoming and the covid measures are sufficient but didn't feel overbearing. The food was great and the selection of beers is very good too. A heartfeld "thank you" to the entire team.
T. L. P.
A magnificent friendly pub that adores good food as much as it adores dogs. Always a fine selection of ales and craft beers. The vegan burger was crazy good! It certainly has that village pub feel as it sat opposite a very real and genuine actual pond that is very kindly home to a few mallards 🦆. What more could you want? A picture of my belly? Go on then!
Y. M.
The Hare and Billet is right opposite the duck pond on Blackheath. It has great food with great service, in this friendly and fashionably unpretentious pub. Had a lovely meal with the family. Loved it. There were even a variety of jars of dog biscuits and water dishes, for the hungry pets that might visit with the customers. Definately top marks from me.
J. W.
Took a little while to get in with all the covid restrictions, which was to be expected, but once inside the service was excellent and we were well looked after. Staff were very upbeat and positive. Nice atmosphere with every table taken. Good idea to book ahead at weekends.
R. G.
Great location, great food and friendly staff.
The Charter Pie beat me!
M. B.
My burger was very tasty but I had some chips from my OH’s fish&chips and they were OUT OF THIS WORLD. BEST EVER. They are fat & must be triple cooked. Get em.
D. M.
great meals out here, had the roast, although one of the roasts wasnt up to the same standard as the one i had before, (different chef maybe) but still great food nonetheless
B. B.
First time at this pub with my wife and surely not the last time! It is on my favourite list now ... delicious food, indeed. We ordered stakes and they were very nice.
F. C.
Great food excellent service and top restaurant
P. A.
Great selection of beers. Very enjoyable fish and chips. Nice atmosphere.
Edited a few weeks later: (dropped to 4 stars) the restaurant / dining room at the back is a bit scruffy. Fix the ceiling, maybe screw in the light fixtures and it would be better. But for a more welcoming scruffy feel definitely aim for the main part of the pub.
P. A.
A magnificent and friendly pub next to where I live. Dogs a welcome here. Always a fine selection of ales and craft beers. The vegan burger was crazy good! What more could you want?
F. D.
Great venue next to a lake on the Heath.
Staff are efficient, good menu selections - particularly the fish and chips.
Tends to be busy at evenings and weekends but you can usually find seating.
They have recently been doing breakfasts - this seems experimental (we were the only occupied table).
Very dog-friendly, with a food bowl, blankets and treats. The pub is clearly a popular stopping-off point for people walking their dogs on the Heath.
D. K.
Apparently no food served on Mondays and Tuesdays. Otherwise very nice place.
J. S.
Great pub, you can enjoy drinks out by the pond and super dog friendly
J. C.
Fantastic food, great drinks selection w/alcoholic & non-alcohlic plus lovely staff! Would thoroughly recommend
A. H.
This pub is a bit of a local highlight. Wide selection of beers, reasonably priced. The decor is sparse but not unwelcoming. Friends swear by the food but I didn't find it particularly memorable. It's a bit out of the way but worth a visit if you're in that part of the Heath. At least as good as any of the other local pubs.
J. R.
The food and the place are great but the service that night was poor. One of waiters pushed us to order more food besides a main each, sides and a bottle of wine. When we were paying he gave us an unexpected small talk pulling his face covering down which I found annoying. Otherwise, a nice place.
P. L.
This pub is the best location in Blackheath with excellent views of the common. The basic rustic interior is what a proper pub should be. Service is efficient and congenial. Generally the beer quality is good. However in the past two years the variety of real ales has diminished and the same breweries are being offered.
p.
A busy little pub on the heath, away from the centre of the village. It's well worth a walk though as they offer a good selection of ales. Does occasionally get busy with foodies, but have always found a quiet spot without too much stress.
m. m.
Gorgeous pub fantastically located right on the heath a short stroll from Blackheath village. Great selection of beers and ciders and super friendly staff. Extensive menu, including pub favourites and other exciting dishes. Have some nosh, grab a drink and sit on the heath watching the world go by. Perfection.
D. A.
Came here for their Sunday lunch. Better to book your table in advance to avoid disappointment. Service was great, staff were super friendly and the roast dinner was huge. Even the kids version had plenty of the plate. Dog friendly too.
G. W.
Really good pub, recently refurbished, great menu and really good staff!
J. B.
I like this place more and more each time I visit it. We always drop in for a quick pint when we come into London. Can be quite noisy, but a great range of beers and lovely staff. Fabulous to sit out on the heath in the summer months, but just as charming in the winter too.
J. F.
Went for Christmas eve meal. This was a pub selling pub standard grub at restaurant prices. Food was average standard as far as vegetarian fayre goes and I found it a little expensive. (Drinks were very expensive which helped push bill upwards). I was also led to believe this was a really nice "restaurant" by my local guide. It was, in fact, a very busy pub which was understandable with it being Christmas eve, but this didn't lend to a nice dining experience which I felt we paid for. We couldn't hear ourselves speak!
Plus points which earned the three stars were that it had a nice and friendly atmosphere and the staff were great.
B. H.
Honestly one of the best roasts I have ever had. I'm talking top 3. Fantastic beef and beautiful garlicky glazed carrots with delicious thick gravy. The food took a while to come as they were very busy and one of the starters was not what we ordered otherwise this would have definitely been a five star. Highly recommended.
T. S.
Great pub with plenty of beer selection and changing specials. Doggies are allowed and given treats, toys, water and blankets.
S.
Nice pub with a countryside feeling. Dogs are welcome and many locals come here after walking their dog. Good place to watch sports with a handful of big screens. Great selection of beers -food is alright but not amazing.
J. F.
We came here today for lunch after a long walk, and brought our dog. It was a fantastic experience. Our dog was given a blanket to lie on, a water bowl and treats :). The atmosphere was lovely and the good was yummy - especially the mussels and the mulled cider. Would highly recommend.
S. L.
Got recommended the Hare and Billet for a Sunday roast. Nice pub, good staff but was unfortunately let down by the roast. The cauliflower cheese was runny and undercooked, the 3 small roast potatoes weren't crispy, the Yorkshire pudding was dry and altogether could've done with more on the plate considering the price.. The parsnip puree was nice and the vege wellington was the best bit. The pub was very busy so i assume it was just a bit rushed but it didn't live up to the reviews online.
J. W.
... very pleasant experience, excellent and friendly staff. I had sole as a special and very pleased. My friend had a vegan Wellington (yes, minus the beef 😊). Situated off Blackheath and highly recommended. Best, John
P. K.
Love this pub - it was packed for fireworks night but they had thought about it and set up a beer table to stop queues at bar. One thing they should think about - they assumed everyone would want to take drinks outside so automatically served everyone in single use plastic cups whilst giving us paper straws! Perhaps ask next time so that we can help reduce plastic waste.
S. Y.
Friendly environment, polite staff, food is good. We did not try the bar yet, hope to try it next time.
G. F.
Lovely food pub in blackheath. Sunday roast was good but not perfect. Mine was slightly cold and had the strange combo of apple sauce with beef. Staff were very friendly but slow as it was so busy.
D. W.
Great selection of Ales and pretty good menu. Good pub.
S. H.
Food was good, good portions sizes, more veg would of been good but overall great experience. The atmosphere was lovely and staff were friendly. Thanks for a great Sunday roast!
M. M.
IMO the best pub in Blackheath. Much better value than The Princess of Wales and lately serving better food too. Excellent setting in the middle of the Heath. One "but" is its smaller size, but that is only an issue in the winter and in bad weather.
S. M.
Nice looking pub. Good selection of drinks. Though, they think the food is better than it is. It's not cheap, the menu describes it nicely, but it's not great. Took over an hour for a steak last time. A steak that was clearly one of the cheapest cuts they could get. Go for a pint and bag of crisps, have lunch and dinner elsewhere.
P. C.
As a pub, the experience was disappointing because the comfort level was low. The vast majority of seating is reserved for diners who have made reservations. It's great that the kitchen is doing so well but if it's a watering hole you are looking for, I would go elsewhere.
T. G.
Absolutely love this place. Always a good choice for a relaxed beer or dinner. Welcomes families and dogs which is a big plus and adds to the atmosphere. Nice staff and reasonable prices.
Update - on my last few visits the service has been quite poor. The staff are friendly, but the wait for the food has been terrible - I think the last two times the staff forgot to put my order through. I understand that that is unlucky, but even on other occassions the waiting time has been unusally long.
L. H.
A pricey Sunday lunch, but really fantastic Roast Beef. Loved the roasties in particular.
Covid contact tracing system is so overly convoluted though, please just use the NHS app!
R. P.
The restaurant was nicely decorated and the staff were nice. I won’t go back, my chicken was under cooked and the desert became sickly after a few tea spoons, spice pumpkin ice cream was horrible. My friends didn’t enjoy their desert either and we all agreed it was a bit disappointing. Won’t be going back, but again lovely staff.
C. F.
Really welcoming dog friendly pub. Excellent beer selection and fun atmosphere
M. C.
Nice restaurant in Blackheath, went for a work Christmas meal. The table was beautifully laid and crackers provided. Service was really good, staff were attentive. The food was a little under whelming, only one veggie option which can be altered to vegan. I would go again to sample the regular menu.
F. L.
One of the best pubs in the city. Amazing selection of ales which rotate regularly to keep things fresh. Nice place for a drink in the summer because you can take your drinks across the street to the heath. Friendly staff and cozy interior. Damn near perfect.
S. K.
One of my favourite pubs. Always a very good seection of ales and a good number of craft beers usually on offer as well. It's great that you can get beers in plastic glasses and drink on the Heath by the pond. Eaten there a couple of times and the food is very good quality, not the cheapest though.
H. G.
Great pub, lovely staff apart from heavily tattooed female manager who seems to be on a hell bent mission to aggressively berate the customers, force everyone to drink £7 glasses of wine out of a plastic cup and shout at everyone with a pushchair. I think she'd be more suited to belmarsh prison staff than the quiet family friendly hare and billet. She will drive away all the regulars if she is not careful.

Good food and tasty beer in a pleasant environment.
We had a very poor service experience, though. We ordered starters and mains, but the staff for some reason put the starters in to come out at the same time as the mains. Then there was no food for a good 45 minutes - neither starters nor mains. We asked (again) for starters, and they brought them out about 20 minutes later. Mains came a reasonable time after that. All told, it took us over an hour and a half to get through a simple two-course pub lunch. Staff ultimately compensated us with free dessert (thanks!) but my experience makes me nervous to go back anytime I have any commitments later in the day.

Typical English gastro pub. Food a bit tasteless (I'd ordered burger) and not what you would call a really clean place. Prices a typically high as usually in London. Sticky tables and a bit of smell present. Not ideal for meal but good selection of beers if you want a drink. A bit too loud for my taste too. Nice staff though.
J. M.
Great pub that doesn't feel the need to offer hundreds of different brands of beer. It's got everything else right, so why bother? Lovely pond opposite maintained by volunteers.
S. S.
Great selection of beers, lovely location and a very good pub quiz on Wednesday's. Food could be a bit better though.
L. D.
Love this place! Such a cute and cosy pub, perfect for winter evenings! We had a meal in the restaurant which had loads of ambience and was separated from the bar. The food was lovely but the service was EXCEPTIONAL. We were served by a young blonde lady and she was very friendly and attentive.Thank you!
E. B.
Very friendly staff. It is a popular pub with good food and so can get very busy. Great location for sitting on the heath with a cool drink (weather permitting!)
J. J.
Lovely location, great service and food
T. E. M.
Amazing food amazing service and amazing management.
The perfect place for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We love all the staff and special thank you to Natalia ❤️❤️❤️❤️
T. B.
Our favourite pub in the area. Super friendly team, lots of provision for dogs, great for families and the food & drink is excellent.
J. C.
The best roast dinner in the Village and the pub that Blackheath residents drink in. Has come a long way since the refurb a few years back.
A little out of the way so tends to be quieter during the summer and still has a pond to sit around too.
Good selection of beers and wine although a little expensive - again it's in Blackheath so to be expected.
Really dog friendly, with treats and bowls for water available.
s. w.
Nice pub, b aware of the add on service charge, at your own discretion but don't tell you
T. R.
Superb menu, the fish and chips a must - this place has a wide selection of beers, ales, cider. Staff brilliant; perfect after a crisp walk on the common, bring the dog.
I. M.
Sensitive to covid rules, looked after us well (group of 4) in a corner table. Great food, even though they forgot one of orders, the manager apologised and the food materialized within a few mins.
J. D.
A great little hidden gem just of the heath, the Hare & Billet is a great spot for a pint and a bite to eat, outside of the better-known locals in the area.
It's only downside, unlike the Princess, and the Crown, is that it doesn't have a beer garden. Though when the weather is nice the staff can serve you in plastic and you can take your drinks out to the heath next to the small pond.
M. L.
Had a very nice burger and some well kept ales. Staff were attentive and very pleasant.
E. C.
Very nice pub, great atmosphere. Very attentive hard working staff. Dog friendly. What's not to like. Rather beautiful Land lady as well👍
C. S.
Good food. Excellent choice of cask ales and kegs. Best thing about the pub is the dog friendly welcome. Treats, blankets and water bowls all on offer for your four legged friend!
A. P.
Great food and service, well managed and clean -- very good experience eating out for the first time in over a year!
P.
Nice pub but card only
S. B.
Brilliant pub restaurant who have handled the pandemic brilliantly, felt safe the whole time and watched a staff member all night sanitising every surface to reduce infection. One of the best adapted places in London
A. P.
Great pub, glad it's reopened following lockdown, always friendly staff, amazing food, good selection of beers
B. M.
Hare & Billet Is a great place to have a meal, that is why it is better than a proper pub. The Hare and Billet scotch egg was great tasting, but it was a big serving! The French fries are like any other good pub fries. They serve Fentimans Ginger Beer, which is a relief because the Schweppes Ginger Ale is not good at all. The location is good, it is across the park from The Royal Naval Collage. The atmosphere is great good for a pub, less roudy and loud than the Victoria near Hyde Park Corner. The fact that it is less roudy than most pubs makes it a great place to bring your kids! Come visit Greenwich (where time is not affected by daylight savings time, and stays the same all year round) and have lunch at Hare and Billet, I highly recommend it!
N. I.
Nice little pub. Great service!
m. t.
Disappointing selection on the menu. About half the items advertised were not available so three of us ordered the chicken as we were told it was available. Two minutes later we were told there was only one left. The place was empty but it still took over half an hour for our food to come. When it did arrive, it was lovely but unfortunately the damage was done and it wasn’t a pleasant experience
I. W.
Great local pub with a rural feel, informal restaurant area and decent selection of beers and wines. Very dog friendly!
L. W.
Great staff, great beers, great location. Highly recommended local pub. Food is good too.
C. B.
Good selection of beer in a lovely location. Perhaps a little pricey but it's a place we've been back to a lot over the last few years which says a lot. I had my birthday celebrations there last year and they were great.
A. B.
Very impressive range of beers and ciders. Nice atmosphere and location on the edge of the heath. Blackheath Village has virtually no good pubs so here (and the Princess of Wales) are the best in the area.
N. L.
Lovely little pub on the edge of blackheath, the staff are always really friendly. There is a great selection of drinks if you are just thirsty, the food is cracking too. I'd highly recommend going for a Sunday roast. The best roast potatoes I've had in a pub for a long while.
M. M.
Excellent. As I walked in I got a lovely cheery Hello from Harry. So sincere and welcoming. Then he was very professional in suggesting a larger for the Mr. Harry was polite and offered excellent customer service. We ordered food and our table was served by Holly who was equally delightful and efficient. She popped back from time to time ensuring we were comfortable, despite being rushed off her fèet she remained calm and charming. The staff were very busy however at all times remained completely proffessional. The atmosphere was positive and happy.
Thank you
B. M.
Really friendly staff, great grub at reasonable prices, perfect spot on the Heath, and exceptional dogs to boot.
B. S.
Lovely pub ,the food is great and the staff are very welcoming and friendly, cant wait for the place to reopen
J. S.
One of my favourite pubs. Good views onto the heath, and a decent pub menu. Dog friendly and and a great old fashioned pub
H. H.
One of the best things about moving to Blackheath was having the hare and billet as your local. Staff are fantastic and always want to help, food is some of the best around while the ales are some of the most varied and high in quality. Whether I am out with fiancé or taking the parents for a roast dinner, the billet is always my first choice. As if all that wasn't good enough the place has a special dog spot with beds and treats. Thank you all the staff for always making the billet the place to go
N. C.
Fab pub. Really good food and lovely barstaff. I have read the other negative reviews. It used to be my regular before I moved. I think if your a regular the staff get to know you here. On the face of it service maybe a bit lacking bit once you've been in a few times and they recognise you the service becomes a very high standard
l. p.
Great pub, lovely staff, perfect for after a long dog walk! They are very dog friendly!
The Sunday roast is the best in south London X
P. D.
Not cheap but decent value. Good beer, wooden floors, dog friendly. Rirgh next to a pond. You can take drinks out with all be it in plastic glases and enjoy the heath.
C. A.
We went to the Hare & Billet with a close friend this Christmas Day and had a long relaxed Christmas meal. The food was fantastic and the service very friendly and it made for a wonderfully luxurious Christmas Day. Thoroughly recommend this place.
a. s.
Love it
S. H.
Great local pub, slightly off the beaten track so mainly locals! Great view over the heath with a nice pond outside which I believe the pub pay to help maintain.
G. G.
Lovely staff, great food and local atmosphere. Its a buzzing place, with the staff being very attentive, even at busy times. Cool local spot for a nice Sunday Lunch!
V. B.
Great beer and friendly staff. Dog friendly pub 🐕
L. R.
Cosy, and very dog friendly, - hence the pungent wet dog smell in combination with - fish. Some people like that😆. Good selection of draught beer, £6.10 for a pint of neck oil though.
D. B.
Nice pub. Good drinks and food selection, including good vegan options. Hygienic with friendly staff. Dog friendly. Somewhat expensive for a pub.
A. K.
Really nice atmosphere - like a countryside pub with a fireplace and bowls and snacks for dogs. The food was very greasy and not that great, but the cider was delicious
b. p.
The best pub in Blackheath. Good selection of beer on tap and in bottles. I had a couple of bottles of Kernal Brewery 'Table Beer' with dinner. Low in alcohol but well hopped and full of flavour. My wife had a Picpoul de Pinet which she also enjoyed. Food is pretty straight ahead English gastropub - mostly fairly simple dishes but well prepared. My wife had bream and was very happy with it. I had the Morrocan Spiced Pork Chop which was well cooked though too lightly spiced for my taste. Came with a nice selection of well cooked vegetables. My desert was cinnamon ice cream and passion fruit sorbet. Probably not made on the premises but very good indeed. Service was friendly though a little slow at times, but this was a busy Saturday night. Prices reasonable for Blackheath. Probably the second best gastropub in the area after the Lord Northbrook in Lee.
K. A.
Absolutely lovely pub.
Just shame about the service.
No customer service at all.
Get short changed then short changed in the change again.
Vodka was really dear. I generally think I got over charged.
2 rounds different prices same drinks.
I did ask why and they told me. Because you didn't have the house vodka. I didn't ask for a certain vodka.
Then.....
Coke was flat. I asked them to change it.
Sorry we can't do that.
Manager please.
15mins later she come out. And absolutely rude.
I always give places a 2nd chance. So will give them a second chance. If no luck.
Shame. As it is an extremly lovely pub.
E. F.
Amazing variety of foods, lovely staff. Very clean and cozy pub feel, food tasted good amazing too!
T. F.
Really old and rustic feel to this pub.
The staff are friendly too and the food is pretty good. A nice relaxing place after a long walk.
N. R.
Great location on the heath. We went for a late Sunday roast. Good service, nice roast, but not amazing and came to £50 for two roast beefs and a glass of wine each so not the best value!!
S. T.
Love the vibe and Sunday roasts!
D. W.
Very smart pub with great range of beers (real ales and craft), friendly staff and comfy sofa (of you are luck enough to grab it). Perfect for lazy weekend afternoons.
A. K.
Yummy ! Amazing camembert with truffle honey !!
S. S.
Sunday roast looked great but chicken over done and cabbage tough. Great beer and lovely staff so would try again
C. O.
The other outstanding pub that attaches directly to Blackheath Common. The roast dinner is great and the pub itself beautiful with a great choice of Cider, which is rare for London.
C. A.
Lovely food good atmosphere
B. L.
Really nice pub, just on Blackheath. Great food, good beer selection.
E. M.
My favourite pub! Love the warmth of the furnishings and the staff. Great views, food, drinks, dog biscuits and water bowls :)
C. M.
A bit sterile interior wise and lacking atmosphere midweek. Camden pale ale on tap, so all is not lost.
Y. C.
Nice Roast Dinner and good Service.
L. S.
Amazing Sunday roast, friendly staff and pleasant location. Shame the wine by the glass was served with a huge lump of sediments.
M. O.
Great location, great staff, good selection of beers. Good to see a real variety of clientele here. Some hipsters with man buns, some older bon vivants, some families. My new favourite place.
E. M.
Great burgers! Amazing pudding, lovely staff ❤️
P. H.
Lovely pub in Blackheath with excellent beers and really good food. Very dog friendly too so an excellent stop off after a walk in Greenwich or Blackheath
V. F.
Very welcoming and dog friendly, had a nice afternoon.
S. K.
Lovely food, tasty ale and cider, good service. There isn't always space to just walk in, so have a backup option if you haven't booked ahead.
R.
Good food went for eat out to help out and was impressed nice spot near the heath. Please stock menabrea lager!
R. H.
Dog friendly and good for takeout food on the Heath!
L. G.
A great local pub! The food is lovely and it's got such a nice vibe. It's my favourite pub in the Blackheath area.
P. P.
Great food. Tried to fit us in on a busy Sunday.
The staff were arguing though and it was pretty obvious. Need to keep it behind closed doors!!
M. P.
Had the tastiest salmon here (was £16 tho...), but I ordered the brownie for pudding and it was a brick of chocolate - I didn’t really get the brownie part. £6.50 for a brick of chocolate, woah.
M. J. B.
Beautiful and serene spot on the 'Heath. The occasional duck, but mostly fish ripple the water. Primarily just locals, with most people staying in the village. This hidden little spot is only a walk away.
M. S.
Solid English pub. Great location overlooking the heath with a wide range of frequently changing ales. Staff are very friendly. Can't fault it for a pint.
T. “. C.
Attended a funeral reception there recently. The food was exceptional and the staff wete great. Lots of parking around too. Recommended.
W. T.
Quality, I come regularly and the food is usually great, however sometimes meat can be quite tough, especially on a Sunday evening.
O. K.
Best beer, best environment, normally a free table. The staff really know their drinks, and the food is good too.
P. E.
Good food, (burger was a little dry) fantastic beer selection. Toilets smelt bad and it was only 12:45pm, so not busy!
A. I.
Can’t fault our waiter who looked after us and my dietary needs the food was fine but we were asked to vacate our table by the restaurant manager dispute there being empty tables which did spoil our visit as we would have stayed for more drinks also no soap left to wash your hands in the ladies maybe Christmas time is not a fair time to judge
M. E.
Its good to be able to see the place my 2x great grandparents owned back in the late 1800's, my grandmother fondly remembers her grandparents & her mothers stories about this place Cheers!
D. I.
Great roast, homely atmosphere and good beer. The staff are friendly and the place has a really cosey feeling
D. M.

G. M.
Lovely environment, nice pub, good, service, and full of energy. Staff is really nice. Highly recomended.

D. G.

M. A.
Lovely pub, great beer selection, good food, you can sit out on the heath made the pond. Idyllic on a nice day.
M. B.
Good on new decor, very urban abbatoir HOWEVER steer clear of the wood pigeon, my brother ate there Saturday 23rd Feb and had serious stomach upset after. I asked him why he hadn't sent it back to kitchen and he said he thought that maybe it was meant to be very rare. Obviously not! Chef not found the heat switch yet!
S. O.
Lovely old fashioned pub. Brilliant Sunday lunch. Dog friendly with treats and bowls available.
P. B.
A brilliant family friendly and dog friendly pub, great for Sunday lunch with gluten free and vegetarian options.
J. J.

H. W.
A great pub, the food was the best I've had and staff were all really friendly

Cosy atmosphere inside, and sitting by the pond on the heath out front in the summer can't be beaten.
