Reviews of The Hemingway
t.
Beautiful roast dinner, FULL of flavour - the vegetables had little notes of Orange glaze on them and were non-typically British by NOT being over cooked!
I ordered the Roast Beef - a delicious cut
Most impressively the service was first class
Upon arrival I saw a huge lineup in a house full of customers and the waiters were brilliant
Never stopped working, were always attentive and most of all gave us their undivided attention
Definitely going back!

A fabulous meal, one of the best beef wellingtons I've ever had and £44 for 2 people. We were also celebrating so ordered a bottle of Laurent Perrier Rosé champagne which was delicious and fairly reasonable at £90 (considering restaurant mark ups). Lovely service and the lavatories are really nice. To note, they are unisex loos, which I had no issues with but some people question

We had a very enjoyable afternoon here. I would recommend the Beef Wellington for 2. Really tasty. I don’t think it needed the salad?! but hey ho. Toilets are phenomenal. Look forward to returning.

Great selections of beers, Beef Wellington is amazing, we have delicious scotch eggs as starter. Definitely going to come back soon. Staff are very friendly.

Despite the previous reviews I am writing based on my experience here today on a weekday lunch. Came here early to avoid any crowd and managed to get a seat outside with the sunny weather. I ordered the beef wellington as there are not many restaurants in London that serves this wonderful dish. Although on the menu it mentioned for two, if you have a big appetite then you can finish it with no issue. That’s what happened to me 😀. Overall the wellington was cooked medium rare and perfect juicy. Loved the stuffing they made for this. I would definitely recommend you to go for this if you want something different. I was the first customer to order this and it does have a long wait of 45 minutes for this which was mentioned to me by the server. Overall this is definitely a nice gastropub in East London near Victoria Park to have a good meal.
F. S.
The food was delicious and great customer service. Only removed one star because it was pouring with rain and the covered area leaked really badly.
B. S.
Been here a few of times and the food it bang on - great roasts, loads of flavours and top desserts. Lively but chilled atmosphere as well and some disturbing taxidermy on the wall which is always good. Kid friendly or trying their best to be kid friendly, the place is usually so busy, you just have to squeeze the buggy, etc in where ever theres a gap, and make sure your toddler drink someone’s drink

I visited the Hemingway in the past and it was lovely, but this latest visit we went for Sunday roast and while the food was really good, the place was so busy that the service was not the best; it took a while to get the food, the glasses were a bit dirty... but i would still recommend it on a quieter day!
E. R.
Firstly, I should say that the Beef Wellington is pretty good, although the lacklustre salad in unnecessary.
However, after requesting that we sit inside, the waiting staff apparently forgot about us and no one came to take our order so my partner had to go to the bar. We then waited over 45 minutes for food. There appears to be a lot of staff, none of which are doing much at all.
M. H.
Food and Drinks absolutely amazing! The workers are really nice especially Esme Bloom (A hard dedicated worker). Definitely would recommend people for all ages to go!
C. C.
Our local / a favourite ! Staff are always so kind and the food is amazing ! The veggie burger is the best!
A. R.
Amazing Sunday roast, Great value for money. Coming back for the Wellington next week. Friendly staff. Excellent choices of beer and wine.
C. H.
Love the Hemingway especially for beef Wellington. In fact I’ve only ever had the beef Wellington here... it’s that good. Staff really welcoming - the back dining area can get a little noisy especially when some people I sit on high pitch shouting, but that’s not the Hemingway’s fault.
Not cheap - but not a rip off either. You get what you pay for: good quality food and wine in a good setting. A place I go to regularly.
K. I.
I come here now and again for a bit of a treat Sunday lunch for the beef Wellington. It’s not lost it but it’s certainly less impressive than it used to be. And ten quid dearer. It used to come served on an impressive wooden board with two gravies and two potato sides. Now it comes on ordinary cheap white plates with one gravy and one portion of chips. The greens are good but for some reason they add bacon to it which is odd when you have so much meat already. And also a cold salad next to the hot greens which makes no sense. Anyway the Wellington itself was really good but the 30% price hike and big drop in presentation means I’ll be going elsewhere for my Wellington in future.
I also got their “gazpacho” which was nothing to do with a gazpacho. So thick it was almost solid and I was picking bits of skin out of my mouth for minutes just from one spoonful. It was also green which seems odd for a tomato based liquid salad. And it essentially just didn’t even taste like gazpacho. Massive failure.
M. A.
Slighty weary after a long day. Arrived ordered - the food came shortly afterwards. Everything hit the spot, the food beautiful presented,, warming and delicious the service attentive but not intrusive and prompt. Just what I need after a long day.
D. M.
Have been using this pub for a while now wouldn't go any were else the food is what you would expect from an upmarket establishment such as this .the beer and wine choices are worldly and good value for money even after the chancellors budget the atmosphere in the pub is wonderful and this is mainly due to the manager and his amazing staff who can't do enough for you wow what are you waiting for come along to the Hemingway and enjoy this lovely place ( not many left )
L.
Good food (Sunday roast - chicken) and staff are lovely, but a bit on the expensive side and they really cram you in. Overall, would recommend.
E. F.
A popular pub at weekends, often with a long wait for a table. Short of time we decided to eat our Sunday roasts outside. Not something I would recommend in the late autumn, as the food got cold very quickly and the staff weren’t attentive. The food was ok, but for a roast dinner, only 2 roast potatoes each seems a bit lacking? We asked for some extra gravy but it didn’t arrive. After mentioning about our disappointment at this forgotten request while paying the bill, the staff member didn’t say much then rudely began a conversation with another a colleague. It seems they were simply too busy to offer any apology!
T. H.
Just at the top of my street. Newly decorated. Open fire. Great food. Comfy sofa. My cup of tea
J. L.
Local feeling pub with good food. Bit rough around the edges but felt welcoming and with a range of punters so no one should feel out of place.
c. m.
Gorgeous grub and beautiful staff. If you're into sawdust and chair chucking, table turning bar fights, then you'd find the Hemingway a bit if a bore. If you like ambience and interesting people with comfy places to sit, then this gaff is for you.
j. i.
I am not sure if there has been a change of management here, but my word it is such an awesome pub now days! Really reasonably priced drinks, brilliant food and a lovely chilled out environment to sit and chill in! The bar staff were absolutely brilliant too, super friendly and professional! It looks great inside with lots of faerie lights all around. Comfy sofas and good outside seating! Great place!
C. B.
Probably the best Sunday roast in North East London that I've eaten in quite a good few years. Considering it was 6pm on a Sunday, so quite late in the day, you normally get the rough cuts of meat and over cooked veg. But this was pretty much perfect. Delicious food and friendly service. Definitely highly recommended. 👍🏼
L. I.
Great service, lovely ambience and delicious food! The BBQ brisket burger was sensational :-)
A. S.
Very quaint unusual pub to which l am normally used to. Really enjoyed the experience.
A. M.
Nice pub but very expensive for a very average roast dinner. Plenty of other pubs close by with cheaper better roasts.
J. C.
Been here a few times really nice menu atm. The beers on fraught range and are decent to really nice. Great outdoors and indoors would recommend for friends or also with little ones on the weekend day time or weekend evening time.
S. B.
Front of house issues.
I have visited this pub for years, I've known it change hands (at least a few times), and I can say for those who have known the place for a long while, it's really not what it used to be, or anywhere close to it.
I have visited many times recently and I always see the same thing, staff who would rather socialise/be on their phones than serve you. Most recently I visited and 5 or so members of staff stood in a circle chatting next to the bar, and I had to make several attempts to get their attention. The staff also spend more time on their phones, eating food in front of customers and chatting than serving you. I always feel like I'm an inconvenience rather than a valued customer. The general reception is poor and the service has a 'here you go' vibe. I have so many memories of this place, but now every time I go I'm disappointed.
T. B.
Great dog friendly pub very helpful and the roast is well worth a try aswell as the deserts 😜
Y. K.
Had an amazing night here celebrating my friends 62nd Birthday. The beef Wellington was amazing! The service was awesome. I loved the atmosphere of this place. Will definitely be back! Thank you.
J. A.
Was only there for one straight after work and was sitting outside. Decent selection of drinks on table though and outside seating plentiful. Id visit again.
r. k.
Over 45 mins between starter arriving and then mains. Food was ok, brisket burger was far too sweet, and I have a sweet tooth.
Service was unfortunately weak, regardless of it being a busy Sunday afternoon, staff team were very slow, inconsistent and forgot requests on three occasions. It felt like they’d all been out the night before and hadn’t slept.
D. J.
Amazing service, first time there, can tell it's not going to be the last one, refreshing pints and 5 star food, had asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with poached egg and it was theeee best, very friendly staff and prices that don't bite! Highly recommend 👌
s. c.
Banging food, good decoration, very cosy place
T. R.
The is a nice little pub with plenty of outside seating, as well as space indoors. The food here is good quality although not the cheapest, but standard for the area. They have some really good beers on tap, interesting decor inside and it is lovely and clean. I would recommend, especially for a drink outside when the weather is good.
C. T.
Very good meals and drinks. Offers sanitary products in toilets which is lovely. Only critism I have is that sofa area is a bit tired but other than that it's it's great place.
D. N.
Been here for a week and have been more then welcomed by two amazing barstaff called Freddie and Esme great pub, great people and amazing food and beer
D. T.
Eclectic would be the word! Love the Water Buffalo head, caught locally maybe! I had a chuckle at the art in the gent's. The Moose's head is cool too. Eclectic was the right word!
B. B.
Really good Scotch egg and Crazy Picalilli
R. N.
Lovely staff, good vibes, and good food. Great terrace and dog/child friendly. Will definitely be back!
T. S.
Very good service good drinks, food was abit underwhelming for the price.
D. E.
We love this pub. Rediscovered after years of not visiting. Came back to discover a delicious menu, great beer selection and loads of seating inside and outside.
Strongly recommend visiting here if you haven't already!
K. B.
The other reviews did not disappoint. The Hemingway was fantastic. The Beef Wellington was superb. It came with perfectly cooked green beans, leeks, cabbage, and bacon as well as chips and a salad. It was more than enough for 2 people. We also ordered the Scotch Egg to start. I've never had scotch eggs, but I'm so glad I tried it here. The service was a little slow, but found that it was that way in London in general compared to the US. We would come back again.
d. s.
A nice place, very friendly staff and nice food. We go there for the beef wellington 😊
c. y.
Really great Sunday roast. Make sure you book few days in advance tho as it's often fully booked on Sunday.
M. W.
Good old East end pub! Decent bit of grub
R. T.
Fantastic Sunday roast. Great atmosphere.
D. B.
Great pub, great food and drink, great atmosphere
S.
Solid food. Good ambiance and great find since it's tucked away in the neighborhoods right next to Victoria Park. Solid dessert menu including Sticky Toffee Pudding.
B. F.
We had the Roast Lamb and Beef on a Sunday. My lamb was really tender and tasty and the Beef was just as good. Great Yorkshire's and a good balance of veg. One small niggle was the veg needed at least a further 60s cook time as the Broccoli was so hard it was difficult to cut. Probably could increase revenue if they had tables that could be pushed together and pulled apart. Overall a great Sunday lunch and I would recommend and be happy to return.
Forgot to mention the service from the team was good too.
M. M.
Nice bar , with good choice on tap .
J. W.
Feel like this place could be amazing were it not for 1 or 2 things. Food and service were great! Music was lovely and good volume for chatting. Decor was... unique. The lights were turned down (almost off) at 8 though, to the extent that the streetlamp on the road outside was providing more light than the lamp 2 feet away. This was accompanied by the lighting of incense, completely filling the pub with a strong smell which kind of ruined any food/drink. Beer selection was also very poor. Shouldn't be able to get better beer and a wider selection at the local Sainsbury's than the local pub.
H. H.
Had a Sunday roast (pork belly and beef) which were both really good. Otherwise its a fairly standard British pub. Service was decent and friendly but they got a few things wrong on the bill and we had to ask for a few things twice. Good vibes. Busy on a Sunday (book ahead).
J. C.
One of the few pubs in London that do Beef Wellington and at a reasonable price.
J. W.
Staff are generally ace, food is great, new outside area is ace. Daylight robbery of £3.50 for a pint of soda water and when asked why got told it was because of London rent. I’m pretty sure a bottle wouldn’t have cost that much.
A. P.
My first visit to a pub in a long time! Tasty food and welcoming staff, very close to Victoria park... Such a perfect day 👌
K. D.
Great chicken and beef roasts 👌
My vegetarian mates were disappointed with their veggie roasts though
P. B.
Good selection of drinks and a decent choice of food.
K. F.
Great food, nice beer and a love pub
G. H.
Very top notch food Sundays are very busy so book a table in advance but other then that 10/10
S. L.
Nice pub, good food, good beers
P. A.
Lovely pub to meet your mates at on the weekend, unique interior and loads of outdoor tables. Unfortunately past few times coming here we have been a little disappointed, our Sunday roast was an hour wait and came out with a dry and tasteless pork belly, other mates ordered only fries and waited even longer 1.20h, the service outside was poor..
Another time we were stood in the queue for a while and then refused any drinks as they were out of glasses, asked if we could have the cans from the fridge and the bartender simply said NO.. Staff can get pretty rude and careless when it’s busy here.
P. S.
Very nice pub, indeed! Friends recommended the place and said if nothing else, for the beef wellington is well worth it a visit! My expectations were high but oh, world, it was fantastic! The best I've tasted so far. If you happen to come around, definitely try the wellington. I also like the place itself, but the wellington outshines everything :)
K. W.
An excellent pub. We sat in the back room which fits 15 comfortably and had a jolly good time. The portions are not huge but very tasty and the drinks are excellent. They're the break point for a Hidden City tour and we enjoyed the meal very much. I would defiantly go again, but its too pricey for something not a treat
A. D.
I went here for birthday drinks a couple of nights ago. We drank but we did not eat so I can't comment on the standard of the food. The beer was good and in range of expected London prices.
Staff were friendly and seemed to be coping with the large amount of people in there.
The decoration inside is "interesting". Some may not like what look like mounted animal heads on the walls. I believe it's to keep in the theme of "hemingway". It wasn't personally to my tastes but I'm not going to rate it down.
All in all, it was a decent night out and I'd go back.
R. H.
Really tasty, well-presented pub food at the high end. Good beers, nice house red. I've only got good things to say about this place. Brilliant ambience and friendly staff. A gem. Don't go here! Leave the tables for me!
B. P.
S. T.
Beautiful pub, friendly and patient staff, dogs and kids welcome with no silly 7pm curfew so you can actually enjoy a couple of pints with your family. Always busy but never too crowded. Reserve a table if you want to eat though!
L. J.
My favourite place for the last 5 years. Great vibe & interior (love the toilets).
4 stars because I love the food but the menu is the same for such long time! At least veg options :) Sunday veg roast isn't good I am afraid but I still love the place.
Terrace furniture needs a proper refurb.
A. P.
This pub does an amazing beef wellington. Would love to try other things but have the same thing the last 3 times we've been. Very friendly staff. And the gents toilets are great ;-)
S. C.
Went in for a late lunch. Wasn't too sure whether it was table service, so it was a bit awkward (someone came over to take our order, but then we had to go to the bar to get the bill and pay). Food was very nice and they were huge portions! I'd go there again.
C. A.
It's my local pub and I love it! The food is delicious, the staff is really nice, the music is great and let's not forget the very interesting pieces of art in the toilets! It's definitely my favourite pub around Victoria Park and I strongly recommend it!
L. P.
Just had a delicious Sunday dinner here. It was absolutely great food, the waiter was very attentive and friendly. Was quite busy so it might be good to book in advance.
A. C.
They have a fantastic back bar but unfortunately no cocktails. The staff and owners are really nice people and seem to care a great deal about what they do. I like the décor in general but the lower restaurant area could do with a little more attention. Not positive I liked the labial artwork in the toilets but I had just eaten.
F. C.
If you're planning to walk around Victoria Park and have a nice roast on Sunday, well this is definitely the right place.
A nice classic pub with a good selection of Sunday roast (lamb, pork, beef...). Usually looks pretty busy so would be a good idea to book in advance.
The dessert are good too, but you can also consider to walk to Victoria village and have a nice homemade cake. ;)
A. V.
For a garstropub the food was way too average. Sunday roast chicken was good but the Yorkshire pudding was overcooked (both portions on our table), fries were horrific too (way too oily and overfried). It wasn't a great experience.
S. L.
Great pub. Lovely ambience and lighting, outside area, good food, friendly service, decent beer and wine selection. Nice place too spend an evening with friends or a date
K. L.
Despite being very busy and very loud.. you can see why it is so popular. Lovely atmosphere. Good drinks, ambience and toilets all in tip top condition.
J. P.
Excellent Gastropub with a great Sunday roast. Service is friendly and efficient. Atmosphere and decor are excellent. Just wish there was a little more standing room for those who aren't dining.
J. G.
Cosy but busy pub that does a mean Beef Wellington.
Originally went two years ago and it's been stuck in my mind ever since. Good wines and beers, pate is also spot on.
Could put a bit more effort into the trimmings. WIll also say service has got pretty slapdash. Gravy brought at the end of the meal, asking 3 times for an extra wine glass. Staff didn't seem massively fussed despite it being heaving.
All in all this a great place to head on a Sunday
PS (if you're a big eater and feeling particularly greedy the beef wellington for 2, can definitely be taken on by one)
D. G. S.
The Hemmingway is the only pub in the local area where I'd bother to get a burger: they come juicy, perfectly cooked and oozing flavour. Their starters are incredible as are the other mains I've had here. Come also for the great wines, cocktail and character of the pub (think vintage decor and slouchy couches). It's truly deserved of the title gastro pub and is very reasonably priced.
T. H.
Cosy little boozer in the backstreets of Victoria Park Village. Go for a walk around the park and finish up here for a pint or dinner with mates. There's lots of outside space and generally it has a good vibe.
M. G.
Easily the best pub in London. No pop or top 50...just jazz and blues. Hamburger is something all carnivores need to try at least once. Extra points to anyone that can figure out what the random stuffed animal is.
K. R.
I really like this place - great food, lovely atmosphere and good crowd. The menu is interesting and whenever I've eaten here I've been impressed! Drink selection is good, lots of premium spirits and good offerings on the beer front too.
A. S.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food and perfect spot!
P. H.
A place where the people running it clearly enjoy what they do. Great food, decent wine and amazing decor. Some quirky music too and nice staff. Does it get better? Oh yes! Reasonably priced too! I almost want to give it a 4 star just so it doesn't get too crowded...
R. M.
The food and atmosphere at The Hemingway is second to none. A simple but hearty wine list complements an excellent menu, with particularly good Sunday roasts: great veggie options, including a yummie Nut Roast.
Still - the menu has no sign of the 'locally sourced produce' as mentioned on Google Maps, and the tables and general layout is rather awkward.
If The Hemingway replaced some of the over-large tables with a few more Chesterfields, then it could become the best local gastropub in East London.
C. v. S.
The staff built this place up from scratch- ask them about the beaten copper back bar. Excellent choice of spirits and on tap beer. Pretty smashing food too. Top London pub.
J. L.
I photographed a wedding here recently and wanted to remark on the superb service and attention to detail from all of the staff. It ended up being one of my favourite weddings! The place looked amazing and the food was awesome.
b. u.
Favourite pub in the area, lovely sunday roasts. Be aware of thieves though, my phone was stolen by someone who came over and asked for money. CCTVs were not useful.
A. W.
Visited with a friend without a booking it was very busy but we were offered a place on a table for 8 Food was great. I had fish and chips - the fish was beautifully fresh Service was particularly good even though the the place was busy.
M. J.
A great little local! Very friendly regulars and staff, and excellent food. Being an ale purist, I'd have liked to see more on cask, but the atmosphere and everything else makes up for this minor deficiency.
H. D.
Been coming here for years and the food is excellent. Tonight though it was on another level, the best burger and pub hospitality I've received in years. Feel very lucky to have this on my doorstep.
Y. A.
Great for a Sunday roast, lovely little outdoor area for when it’s sunny
W. M.
Lovely pub with a good selection of beers. Plenty of outdoor seating, and the staff were great!
l.
Good food, nice place! Definitely recommended for both food and a drink. Often quiet throughout the day but very busy on weekends and evenings.
T.
Had table booked, waited 15 min for drinks, had to go up and ask, had to ask them to take my food order, food was delicious, but service poor
M. C. B.
We sat outdoors and it was very comfortable. Food was delicious and service was very good!
N. G.
Very fortunate that this is my local pub. Amazing food and very lovely staff. Highly recommend for a bite to eat or a quiet drink.
S. O.
Sunday Roast was alright. Wouldn’t be shouting about it. Service was friendly but maybe inexperienced. Having no hot drinks is an interesting position to take...
D. S.
The servers were lovely but the women behind the bar was showing shocking manerism and was very very harsh
m. l.
my absolute favourite pub around victoria park. delicious food, lovely stuff and great atmosphere.
K. M.
Regular here since it opened. Consistently good if you can find a table. Great decor. Maybe needs more craft beer on tap if anything.
J. C.
We came for lunch and we had the salmon. It was cooked to perfection and the sides were delicious too. The service was excellent too. I would definitely recommend this place.
A. L.
On the pricier side for beer but very cosy and cute. There seemed to ge a private dining room at the back and the food looked great
K. I.
Great beef wellington, veg sides are a bit lacking. Service is only ok at best
Decor is interesting
!
T. F.
Excellent Sunday roast. The beef wellington is incredible. Great veg and fries that come with. Really yum.
M. P.
6 of us came for dinner as always very good food and service. They also have a great selection of wines and beer.
L. B.
Lovely old pub by Vicky Park, but service not good during last Sunday lunch.
K. T.
I just happened to be in the area and didn't seek this pub out. It was a lovely meal. I just think it was priced high for what it was.
B. M.
Very cool decor. Try to spot the goat butt if you can! It could do with moving the kitchen out of the main hall, as it could get a bit stuffy/smelly. Lovely staff.
M. B.
Very nice pub. A good selection of beers and delicious food. The beef wellington on the weekend is particularly good!
M. H.
Great pub. Been a couple of times and the service is always friendly. Good menu and good food!
C. K.
Food is very good. Nice outside space at the back
N. H.
I do like this pub and have been many times but recently noticed a change in attitude by staff which has come across as rather rude and impatient.
E. B.
The food was delicious and they had some great veggie-friendly options. It was a great place to be with a baby on a Saturday afternoon.
t. c.
Lovely Food . Very noisy . Poor service . Some staff to casual . No coffee or tea !! Crazy !!!!!!.
R. B.
Great drinks and amazing friendly staff
J. D.
Could be so much better, but has closed around 10pm on my last few visits, despite claiming to close at 11:30. Misses a lot of trade and cuts short your night...
t. k.
Had an excellent Sunday roast here last weekend. Service is good and nice cosy ambience. Would go again.
A. K.
Lovely pub with good service and good food. Bit out of the way though, it's a fair 20 minutes walk to the tube station
J. D.
A very well stocked bar with hand pulled real beer .The food is a amazing very yummy and scrupulous ie steaks,or Christmas dinner roasts
T. R.
Fantastic food, and very friendly staff. An absolute favourite pub in East London
J. H.
Mmmmmm few great beers and delicious food. Cheese board was excellent. Most notable was the beef Wellington! Perfection. 👌
e. m.
There beef wellington is worth the wait! Sierra nevada on tap too. Great beer.
R.
Lovely pub i went there and had the beef wellington highly recommend you will not be disappointed.
s. a.
Nice place and great food, esp foie gras
M. S.
Very cozy pub, traditional. With a great beer and food selection. Nice it's near to Victoria Park.
W. J.
Try the scottish eggs they're incredible - real melty and freshmade meat filing. going to come back and eat here more
P. B.
Nice atmosphere, reasonable food but unreliable booking system, you can't trust an email confirmation. Check the bill too.
C. H.
Local pub right next to Victoria Park. Cool interior, tables outside and one of the best roast I had in London.
T.
All around a great pub. Friendly staff, full of locals, good prices for London, really nice food and decor.
J. M.
Good food. Good atmosphere. A bit pricy and could use better beers on tap.
M. C.
Great Sunday Roast in East London, outdoor picnic tables for post-Covid lunches in the sun.

(Translated) Great pub very close to Victoria Park. The 388 bus stop is also just a few steps from the entrance. The inside and outside invite you to linger. Everything from the menu is recommended here. We have never been disappointed. Every time an absolute dream. The staff is always very friendly and prepared. See you again soon !!!

(Translated) A class pub. We have been there twice now and have never been disappointed. Be it the obligatory fish and chips or as on our last visit to the burger, everything is really good and better than you would expect in a pub. I especially like that the card changes every few weeks and you can always try something new. The outdoor area as well as the interior offer enough space. The operation is very fast and everything went smoothly. Highly recommended and also from the prices perfectly fine.
