Reviews of The Hen & Chickens Theatre Bar
E. F.
This is a really cool space with a theatre on the first floor. Great vibe, friendly staff, and a nice beer selection. We went there for a few screenings for a film festival I'll definitely be back to hang out in the pub area.
J. C.
A wonderful experience. Busy and vibrant, welcoming as I came in. I’ve had a few gin and tonics. They have a wide selection of booze. Can’t wait to come again.
B. S.
This is a review of the theatre only - not the pub. I have not been a customer of the pub. Went to the unrestricted horror film festival for 2 nights. The films were very good. The theatre is small but not cramped. The gentleman on the box office was lovely. Really warm and welcoming. It was my first time visiting the theatre and he took the time to chat to us and really made us feel at ease - you know who you are, Mr 'Hounslow'. He even remembered us straightaway the second night.
Lovely welcoming venue with top quality films. Highly recommend. Please support this venue.
P. S.
Friendly, nice atmosphere, reasonably priced and comfortable. A relief to find a relaxed place for a sit down and a drink on a Sunday afternoon when nearly all the other pubs in the area had no space, as a reserved seating for pre-booked gastro meals etc only. Theatre shows on some days of the week. I look forwards to a return visit.
C. G.
If you are into small theater, love intimate, this is perfect for you. With seating for a maximum of 30 or less, you are up close and personal with the stage/audience.
Downstairs, a small bar, with an amazing bit of character. From stools to a gorgeous leather chair by the fireplace in a corner, there is something for each soul. Don't feel like sitting inside? Go outside to the tables and benches and make new friends.
This place calls to the gin and tonic crowd.
R. D. S.
Really nice interior, insulated from the busy roads outside, decent pints and friendly bouncers (on a match day)
R. C.
Lovely pub and theatre. Lovely intimate venue to watch love theatre. Highly recommend
D. B.
Lovely pub with a wonderful little theatre upstairs. Pricey though!
A. C.
Lovely cute little pub with great cocktails and friendly staff.
T. O.
Fantastic pub theatre, famed comedy stars have performed here, as well as me I doing a cute play about 300 years ago.
A. a.
Fast service when busy after Arsenal game. Recommended
P. S.
There are a lot of things to like about this place. Can't really comment on the quality of plays because each of those will be specific to the troup (although Wonder in Aliceland was fabulous and if it becomes a bigger thing, which it should you should definitely go see it. Bring hankies.)
But the bar is excellent. The wine list is small but everything is available by the glass and the selection is high quality, the beer is crisp and clean so the lines are obviously well maintained. Service is efficient and friendly and the staff are well organised in making sure current covid regulations are maintained in a way that is polite and friendly. Pricing is what you would expect for London, snacks could be better.
F. F.
Lovely little pub with a small theatre upstairs. Highly recommend!
P. C.
such a quiet venue on s sundsy afternoon perhaps because every other pub serves sunday lunch
D. B.
Friendly staff, nice environment.. within a theatrical environment.. great night..ps parking bit of a mare..
k. S. p.
Nice quiet small pub but drinks were expensive
J. K.
A cool, intimate place to enjoy a drink & socialise. Friendly, attentive staff ensure that you need for nothing. Beautiful Chesterfield style chairs are to be taken advantage of if you're quick enough (there aren't many). Furthermore, the theatre upstairs is a quirky feature that adds to the general vibe of the venue. I'll be back.
A. G.
It was great to be back at one of my favourite fringe theatre haunts, to watch a fine show and socialise with my wife and old friends in the bar.
C. P.
Lovely pub not far from the Garage... Good beers, nice atmosphere and friendly crew.
J.
Good beer selection. Open a bit later than surrounding hostelries. A touch cosy, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
a. p.
Went to see 'A Christmas Carol' tonight at the 'Hen & Chickens'. Our first time here and had a fabulous time. Lovely pub and intimate theatre. The one man play was so much fun! Not what we expected. It was a great laugh. Very cleverly done. Scrooge pulled me out of the audience for a dance! Natasha Power x
I. M.
Lovely old theatre pub in good old Islington. Good beer and intimate performances. Great venue.
A. H.
Lovely little pub in a nice area of London. Not too far from tube station. There's a small theatre upstairs for independent shows which is a really nice feature! Reasonable prices for drinks, not sure if they serve food though and how expensive it would be. Still a great place for a drink and a show
R. R.
Good pub and theatre bar. Good choice of beers. Very convenient for o transport almost anywhere from the station across the road. All night services at the the weekend.
Only minus was the aircon is struggling and bit in this hot weather but the beer was at right temperature so no worries! All in all an ace venue. Richard
S. P.
Attended a charity comedy gig. Very funny. Belly laughed all night. The pub land lorda had provided the theatre for free. Such a lovely gesture. Service was pleasant if not a little slow. It was packed to the rafters though. Drinks a bit expensive. It got uncomfortably warm by the end of the night. So many bodies and the radiators were on full blast. Having said that it was great night. Definitely would go again
T. J.
A small friendly pub beneath a theatre. Good range of beers with guest ales. Still retains a Victorian pub feel with some embossed tile work and mantleshelf and cast iron columns. Manager Liz and assistant manager Aaron together with staff Lucy and Marina are quite pleasant and actually show interest in the customers.
K. L.
Amazing pub really stunning staff especially medo
C.
I visited the other day to watch a production of The Merchant of Venice.
▶️Venue:
The exterior looks traditional, but inside it looks like it's recently had a fresh coat of paint. Décor brings some modern touches to the building.
My friends all enjoyed the drinks and got more during the intermission.
The theatre is located up the narrow stairs. It's akin to a studio; quite small, for an audience total of 54 people. Chairs were pretty uncomfortable but it wasn't too distracting. The stage lacked a backdrop and set; the only set pieces and props were three benches, three chests on tables, and a sprig off a tree. Seemed like a fine sprig though.
▶️Performance:
That said, the performance was fantastic. I was torn on the interpretation; it incorporated a fair bit of comedy. It was enjoyable for the parts where suitors came to open the boxes, but some felt forced.
However, I loved the addition of the scene at the end; Jessica receiving a letter to learn of her father's fate reminded us that not everybody won, among other things.
L. G.
Cosy Theatre Pub with a nice atmosphere. Staff on the ball and attentive.
C. S.
Lovely atmosphere, great music. Good service behind the bar, my favourite wine always available. I will always visit here after my shift for a cheeky tipple. Keep up the good work guys
H. O.
The space itself is intimate and provides lighting, with the box itself in the audience's back row. There's a curtain to go behind for entrances and exits but I love it. Fringe theatre at its best! The pub itself has a lovely cosy atmosphere and a decent selection of drinks
F. N.
Have known this pub for years and although it has had a facelift a number of times the beer and service have always been good. I appeared very late in the evening as I work away from Highbury but found the bar staff excellent and the interior pleasant. Bar prices are the norm for Islington, but a good place to drop into for a visit if you are doing the Highbury to Angel crawl.
N. P.
Nice intimate pub with a good selection of craft ales and wines. They don't have a kitchen, but are happy for you to being food in. They have an agreement with Sorentto, a pizza place that's more or less opposite: you can order pizzas from them and have them delivered to the pub. They even have a menu for them. However, bar staff are not able to order on your behalf, procurement is your own affair.
S.
Lovely pub, the staff are great, very friendly and helpful.
A. D.
My favourite pub in H&I and surrounds. Used to have my favourite sofa in London too, gutted its gone, but overall I think the re-doo is gorgeous and very well done. Has a big screen but it's thankfully usually off unless something significant is happening.
P. S.
Much improved since former times. One's hands no longer stick to the tables. However, we had to move from our first choice of table, because it rocked so badly, our drinks were in danger of spilling their contents. Nearly a tenner for two pints.
A. H.
Great little pub. Relaxed atmosphere and good music (alternative). If you are hungry, they have a reasonably-priced pizza menu which orders from the local pizza place which is handy as the pub doesn't do food.
M. “. O. K.
Nice friendly pub with a good range of beers available. Popular comedy nights upstairs is well worth attending and the food is pretty decent.
All in all it's a good one stop venue for a good night out.
M. B.
Great fun. Small theatre with a big heart.
D. A.
A friendly theatre bar with a good range of beer. The Hen and Chickens is a one minute walk from Highbury and Islington Station. The theatre sits upstairs and has a capacity of about 60 and has raised seating. The pub gets very busy before and after Arsenal have played.
M. I.
More outside space would have been nice, but they made it work with what they had
J. S.
Lovely pub but no beer of interest
London pride on cask and Camden pale on keg were the only beers on tap not counting lagers and ciders.
😢
H. F.
Traditional pub and lovely to step away from the 'trendy' expensive bars you come across on Upper Street. There are some fruit machines near the door which can lead to a build up in the area, and a couple of times ive seen people in with their dogs which i'm not a fan of.
A. H.
Love this place.. One of my favourite pubs in London. Always busy but excellent service.. Great range of beverages.
H.
Lovely little boozer with a wide selection of beers; staff are always very welcoming, music always on point. Perfect place for a date.
A. C.
Great little pub close to the station. Does a good selection of drinks, didn't try the food. Need to check out the theatre.
J. B.
Lal by Alice Henley was incredible
l. w.
This place is a prime example of the saying 'don't the judge a book by its cover'. For what looks like a intimidating and rough neck pub, there is a gem layered beneath and unexposed.
The pub features a simple menu of different curries like your Madras or Korma. However! There is especially one dish that will treasure my mind forever about Hen and chickens which is simply the mixed grill. Meat heaven arrives to your table with a mountain consisting of chicken tikka, chicken wings, fried chicken wings, lamb kebab and fried fish. It's a joy to behold as it was so cheap and filling.
B. G.
Great wee pub. Loved it on my visit to London town. Cosy atmosphere. Great food. Will definitely come back!
f.
I went to see a performance there. It was a bit hot at the end as it's at the top floor of the building without windows, but was still good. People are friendly and great atmosphere.
N. J. M.
Great interior. Hopefully get to a play soon.
D. L. M.
One of the greatest theatre pubs in London for both comedy and independent plays. Nice beer selection too but that's not the main reason to go
J. P.
A reasonable selection of lagers, not much real ale, good friendly atmosphere, not to busy, polite and friendly bar staff. Not too loud either so good for a beer and catching up with mates.
E. C.
I love this retro style pub in the building of the Hen and Chickens theatre, always a great place for a drink or two. Highly recommend this great pub on Highbury Corner.
N. W.
Castle pub chain with a functioning upstairs theatre. Decent selection of cask and keg ales, good simple pup grub, they also have SecretDJ so you can play songs in the pub from your phone.
J. W.
I like this place. Because it's described as a "theatre bar" it tends to get overlooked as a decent pub. Great cask ales.
K. I.
Nice pub and beautiful little theatre. Nathan & Ida's Hot Dog stand was fabulous. Please do not miss their show.
M. G.
Love this pub and the theatre seen some great shows here, the staff on the bar and in the theatre are always so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this place
G. D.
Maura Judges appeared in a one woman show. Great little theatre. Nice bar downstairs.
M. B.
I went there to see a play and my friends and I had miscommunicated so that we mistakenly bought eight instead of the needed five tickets on the web. We tried to cancel the purchase or get a refund right after we realized by calling them and again at the door. It was clear to them we had made a mistake and the place was not sold out and they still refused to give us a refund (remember we were still five paying customers coming there). I find that bad customer service and in fact greedy.
P.s.: The play was good though.
O. P.
Nice cosy pub, friendly staff, ideally located near the Tube station, haven't visited the theatre upstairs though, but it's on my list!
S. B.
A lovely place to visit with theatre performances in the evenings.
P. 7.
Lovely welcome and excellent service- thanks. Tiny theatre upstairs is a unique feature.
P. M.
Great lively pub and lovely little theatre upstairs, well worth a visit or to see a show close up
R. W.
Funny little pub, traditional pub I would call it. Went here for a Jimmy Carr warm up gig, he was very funny and its very intimate.
Pub was very hot!
M. J.
The place can easily get crowded but the theatre is a welcome addition. Unassuming, simple and apt for what it is for. I am missing my popcorn though for the films :p
S. J.
Really nice and friendly bar with a good theatre and cinema space above. Enjoy!
C. D.
A great pub and a great small theatre upstairs. Friendly staff and drinks are reasonably priced.
S. J.
Ladies toilet paper run out, the washing base not clean
R. T.
Lovely pub with small screening room for films. Good atmosphere, nice delete of beers!
P. B.
Busy Highbury pub. Prices are in line with Islington. Small PubTheatre upstairs which is a bonus for local entertainment. Near the station, on the pedestrianised roundabout.
A.
Sweet and busy spot for a cheeky summer beer. Polite and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit!
W. W. K.
The bar/pub area downstairs wasn't very impressive but it's the little theatre upstairs that makes this a charming place. I would only go there if I was watching a show.
D. S.
Brilliant theatre pub at the centre of Islington. Great pub and performance space, will be even better once the whole construction outside is over with.
T. S. L.
Fancy seeing Jimmy Car or alternatively, some theatrical musings for around a tenner? In the upstairs of a pub in Highbury & Islington lies a fifty person TSL fringe favourite, Hen & Chickens theatre. It's a place you'd hardly know was there as the box office seamlessly merges into the pub's bar with little inclination of the dramatic world above...
Read more on this and other independent businesses all across London on the Twenty Something London website!
D. L.
Very nice pub with theatre upstairs
J. S.
Great little pub with normally 3 real ales on.
Very busy on match days.
L. A.
Can honestly say this was fab. They might not do food but service was great especially with our coffee requests, and very fair explanation that they didn't have a coffee machine but would do their best. Honestly couldn't tell the difference!
S. C.
Nice bar with some good beers. Great local theatre upstairs with an interesting line up.
V. K.
Nice staff, shame they didn't serve food during the euros
T. M.
This place has good service and good quality of said service, hands down one of the best in the area only thing lacking is lack of outside seating for the summer. Just something to complain about I guess
L. G.
Quirky theatre! Personal and entertaining theatre up close and natural; One Had Tails and One was Naked is a good short play and suited this venue perfectly!
P. T.
