Reviews of The Island
P. B.
This is one of my favourite places in Kensal Rise! Great for summer days and winter nights! Have been coming here for years (even during lockdown - oh how I miss the takeaway pizza!) Great for families, friends and dates!
A. l.
Am setting a challenge for diners. We were a party of 14 and our waitress took all our drinks and food orders without writing anything down. Not a SINGLE error!! So impressive. Interested to know if this is her record :)
H. L.
Really good Sunday Lunch. Excellent Pork and my wife loved the beef. Great value for kids roast.
Good, well kept beer.
very attentive and friendly staff.
Make sure you get the Indonesian chicken wings as a starter. world class.

It isn't the first time that I have visited the Island. It is a welcoming place, Sundays are typically busy! Although they are busy, they endeavour to keep an eye on patrons. Making sure everyone is comfortable. I had the roast chicken, nice portion size a bit to much for me! I liked the butter sauce especially, It was a nice meal.

Last minute decision to go out for dinner , daughter lives locally. Wasn’t disappointed busy place with only two floor staff who dealt with the crowd with ease and a smile. Food arrived quickly and was great - kitchen staff on the ball. Would high recommend for food , staff and atmosphere
T. W.
Pretty busy- good service and great staff. My fish and chips were very good and the enormous glass for the g and t added to the fun!
C. L. T.
Had a wonderful "linner" (=lunch/dinner) here yesterday with wife and friends. The food was excellent and abundant, the price/quality ratio outstanding and the staff were absolutely wonderful. A great pub to visit, I highly reccommend it :)
D. D.
Enjoyed our lunch time visit. Nice, child and dog friendly place. Good outside area with plenty of heaters. Only down side was the small hard piece of plastic that we found in our Nachos which we advised the waitress about. But would not put us of visiting again.
T. M.
Lovely - the people, the food and the vibe. So nice to have a good local - even on a Thursday in January there is a good atmosphere. The chicken wings remain the standout - but it’s also the only pub I can find a good magarita! love it
L. S.
Very nice decor and attentive staff. Good wine selection and I love the 6X ale. Food menu looks better than it tastes.
M. D.
Beautiful pub with plenty of outdoor seatings, which is perfect during summer time. Good selection of spirit s and beers and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Recommended
J. M.
Brilliant atmosphere and very friendly and helpful staff. 3 of us had the same meal but all plates looked different (eg. some had more greens, some had hardly any greens) and the food was cold. We didn’t ask for it to be warmed up as we didn’t want to spoil the food or overcook the meat. Very tasty though and would definitely go back. Excellent espresso martinis!

Good gastro pub food, nice ambience, quick service and family friendly. Unfortunately, whilst the service was prompt, it was unfriendly and not at all welcoming. The waitress who greeted us didn’t bother to ask for a highchair when it was obvious we needed one, we asked what soft drinks there were and she sighed and shrugged with a look of inconvenience ‘everything’. As we left, we looked to the staff to say thank you and goodbye and no one said anything. It’s a lovely place for food and drinks but a smile and warm, friendly service counts for a lot! I’d return in the future, but it wouldn’t be my first choice in the area based on our experience.

Recently visited The Island for a meal.
Nice intimate setting. Lovely decor. Staff were friendly and attentive throughout.
Would visit again.

Pretty busy- good service and great staff. My fish and chips were very good and the enormous glass for the g and t added to the fun!

Great ambience and interior. Outdoor seating is heated too so really comfortable. All round a great place. Only drawback is high prices but we're still regulars.

Had a lovely Sunday roast and drinks here. Food was amazing and staff where lovely and really helpful. Great atmosphere would recommend for a drink or something to eat.
S. B.
The Island is a calm, warm and comfortable place to meet. The service was excellent and the Sunday lunch was delicious. It is a wonderful place to spend a a few hours on a cold December day (or night).
S. P.
Christmas Lunch!!, Now be honest folks how many times have you eaten the most Overpriced, tasteless & needed a Burger afterwards Christmas Lunch ?
Well not at the Island. I enjoyed the three course lunch. The Salmon was so tasty with a hint of lemon. The Turkey left me salivating for more. So moist & not a dry slice anywhere. I’m normally very apprehensive about turkey due to previous meals
The Chocolate mousse was so creamy & the hazelnuts toasted to perfection. My partner compliments to Chef Giovanni 😊😊
Thank you Harry for your organisation & table layout which was so welcoming.
A fantastic meal enjoyed by 6 old friends.
Treat yourself people , you won’t be Disappointed
See you next year all 🎄🎄

So great to have a local as consistently excellent as The Island. Great food, excellent selection of drinks and the staff are always super helpful and friendly!

We celebrated my partner's 50th birthday here last month. It was fabulous. The canapé menu was delicious; the drinks flowed; the service was great - everything was brilliant from start to finish. We used the upstairs section and our guests were all very impressed wth this venue. It was a night we will remember forever - great memory!

I hosted my daughters Christening on Saturday had a great time we was very well looked after. Food was lovely would definitely book the function area as well as come back for drinks again 😊
J.
Best beer battered fish and chips i ever had amazing food and loads of good 🍺
R. C.
I went here one night on an overnight layover. I came alone, showed up late, and stayed until about closing. It was actually a really nice evening and the manager on duty treated me very well. She was Italian and had a great demeanor about her. I truly recommend this place purely based on her.
H. F.
The food and drinks were nice, but the cocktail menu was tiny and the staff were helpful but spoke and looked at you as if you were an inconvenience. Also a few items not available on the menu which was a shame given it was limited to begin with.
I. S.
We are lucky to have so many fantastic pubs and restaurants in our area but The Island stands out above them all. So much care and attention has been taken to provide a beautiful space to eat, drink and socialise in. The staff have always been amazing, helpful and friendly even when stupidly busy which is now pretty much all week. Food has recently gone off the charts with the introduction of a new chef providing inventive and tasty daily specials along with the tried and tested menu. Missing the afternoon beer snacks such as Sausage Rolls, which they used to do. (Hint, hint!).
On another matter posted by the previously poster and serial Troller, Gabriel. Posts like this are posted publicly and are subject to public review. They can seriously damage a business and its reputation.
Any complaints could have been said privately to the manager and would have been dealt with immediately. You decided to publicly humiliate them, which is such a shame.
All this because, you were drunk, and you pestered said waitress for her telephone number which she denied. Which I witnessed along with others.
Do you like it back when it happens to you? I hate bullies and will report your post as offensive.
P. A. C.
Overall a good experience. Lovely outdoor space, friendly staff, good selection of food and drink. Only criticism is with the overall quality of the Sunday roast.
J. R.
Great pub with a good restaurant, food is lovely and the staff are friendly and professional...
C. A. D. G.
Sunday roast was incredible. The pub is lovely and has parking space on the main roads
A. B.
Fabulous to return to our favourite local in Kensal Rise. Always great service, lovely food and the best beer garden in the area.
B. M.
Great place. Great food. Lots of outdoor seating with heaters if needed.
A. W.
Great pub, great food, brilliant atmosphere and friendly staff.
D. R.
Respectable pub, popular with locals. There's a good selection of craft lagers and real ales plus good spirits and wines. Often busy, it can sometimes get a little boisterous or overun by large groups. That said, it's most popular with people from the area and mostly free from idiots, but the cocaine residue in the toilet cubicles reminds you that it's still London!
S. P.
Can’t get a more local local than thirty seconds walk. Great atmosphere here both inside and outside. Nice selection of drink and bar snacks as well as main meals. Highly recommend the nachos and the chunky fries. Both delicious. Looking forward to the place opening up again soon.
d. w.
I've been here three times and eaten there each time. I must say the food is excellent and we'll worth a visit
m. m.
Very nice pub, good food and nice ambiance. Its our local go to place since we move out of Maida Vale and can't go to our beloved The Elgin anymore ...
L. L.
I've always loved my local pub, and now they've made the outdoor space lovelier. Food is very good, and the staff are great. It's also dog friendly, which is great.
J. R.
Sarcastic Bartender.
Instead of simply communicating orders are taken via app and not at the bar, the sarcastic Bartender retorted to my question saying: "It's a pandemic" and carried on with her duties. I had forgotten momentarily about ordering online and seeing the confusion on my face before the revelation hit me, she decided to back track and mumble to only then say "sorry last orders have been taken"
Assume this was my first time out what would that exchange say to me about this staff member?
The brief exchange was enough to put me off. Simple questions and simple answers should be her motto. Other than this it's actually a nice place.
K. B.
Wonderful experience for the first day pubs were back open. The staff was mindful of social distancing and had masks on, there was hand sanitiser at multiple locations and markings were clearly labelled when walking in the pub. The odd time aside; it is a great atmosphere with a nice selection of drinks. Didn't get a chance to try the food, but will be back to!
N. P.
Excellent roast beef, most welcoming venue.
W. G.
Good, and we were well looked after buy your staff, but..
My friend, who is a vegetarian, felt the cauliflower steak, which was really tasty, wasn't great value for money at £12.50 as it didn't come with any accompaniment such as chips, salad etc.
My octopus was delicious, but.. I did only get one tentacle, so it was more an 'amuse bouche' than a proper starter!
Burger nice too, but didn't come with any greenery, salad garnish etc. so, again, not obviously great value..
Overall food was tasty, but I'd have to be on a diet to think the portion sizes were value for money.
Overall: 3 stars, but wouldn't take much to improve that to 4, or maybe even 5..
Second time I've eaten with you in the last month.. Need to be more convinced to not go elsewhere next time!!
M. R.
Amazing pub with delicious food and lovely staff.
H. L.
Recently visited on a Sunday for a lunchtime roast. It was honestly one of the best roasts I have had in a long time, perfect portions and beautifully cooked. Lovely laid back atmosphere too and great service.
R. S.
Super friendly and accommodating staff. The outside area is covered so we didn't get wet despite the horrible rain. Lovely pub away from the main highstreet
A. B.
The food is good but the level of noise is not. Great for a night out but not a meal if you don’t want to raise your voice or hear people on the other side of the tabke!
Z. R.
Excellent local pub, excellent food.
J. V.
Beautiful pub, super nice terrace, nice and helpful staff and great food and drinks. A bit pricey but worth it. It is my local pub and we enjoy all the time we spend there specially on the terrace on these sunny and hot days.
K. F.
Great pub, great service, great food - this is a brilliant neighbourhood pub. Order the sticky chicken thighs - they off the chain.
G. F.
aside from the whole silly rule in place from government about having to order a 'susubstantial meal' in order to allow you to have a drink 😅 the staff are all extremely curtious, attentive and polite. We had nachos and was a good size portion and well loaded with lots of yummy goodness
M. N.
Its a fantastic roast and lovely place, recommend!
G. H.
Great food, a lovely roast on a Sunday, good range of beers on tap. Staff are always welcoming and attentive. The pub is well organised and feels safe during these Covid times.
N. D.
Aug 2020: I liked it much better before the lock-down when I could drop by for a pint. Now I need a reservation to have a drink. // Update Feb 2021: Still in lockdown, can’t wait for The Island (and all the other pubs and restaurants) to open again and get a pint. Fond memories. Until then they started making pizzas for take away or delivery.
L. P.
Lovely welcome from owner and staff after not visiting for nearly a year. Feels more airy and spacious after remodeling. We popped in for a coffee that led to a great Sunday roast.
G. G.
Friendly as ever, and with staff willing to wake up apathetic parents in light of the house rules i.e. Keep your children seated, it was as ever a calm and welcoming vibe.
Food and drinks enjoyable throughout, however (and possibly thankfully) one of the staff did not hear me ask for 'Two Crumbles', and assumed we wanted to share a single portion (Neither me nor my partner like sharing crumble) but we were too embarrassed to inquire as to where the second crumble was, so that's mostly on us.
We could have stayed there all day (and nearly did), any wine snobs will turn away now when I say; I loved their Merlot.
The Burratta with grilled Peaches could have easily been repeated, and the scotch egg also deserved an encore had we stayed an hour or two later after our actual main, which was the blackened salmon; beautifully cooked and seasoned.
Can't wait to go back. Yay for their Raspberry Daquiri as well.
1.
Great local pub, lovely setting and excellent food. Manager always very obliging and helpful.
D. K.
Really good pub.
Great menu, really friendly staff.
Sun trap of a garden, for long summer days.
M. S.
We were a group of 8 that visited the island for lunch. Fantastic service, food was lovely and it was beautifully decorated inside. Good smoking area outside. The bar staff and food waiters were INCREDIBLE! Thank you very much
C. C.
The remodel of this pub is fantastic. So much roomier and brighter than before. Great beer selection and the food is ace. (They haven't even started their full menu yet!)
L. M.
Only stopped in for one drink, nice place, nice staff, food looked good.
J. C.
Came once for Sunday Roast on a Sunday pre-refurb. Came this evening for a quick half and the place is wonderful. Such a lovely community atmosphere, clean, fresh, plants, good beer on tap. Will visit again with friends. Outside seating area is large and the roads are quiet.
K. A.
Very enjoyable lunch in relaxed surroundings. Lovely food and the staff couldn't have been more polite and helpful. A DEFINITE for a return visit. Many thanks The Island 🙂
C. R.
Went for a quiet drink in the evening not to far away from closing up time. The staff were warm and attentive greeting my guests I as soon as we arrived. We bought our drinks and then headed straight outside towards the outdoor seating area because it was still quite warm. Toilets were clean and we were more or less left to our own devices which made for a pleasant experience on the whole.
t. B.
Top notch pub had some great pints 10/10 would go there again most definitely
N. R.
Great local pub. Staff are amazing and they are doing a great job welcoming everyone back now they are open again
L. D.
V good Tommy's (however, questionable that I can get one in Soho for the same price, give or take a quid.)
S. F.
All you could want from a local boozer. New owners improved the decor and the menu. Good range of beers and wine. Good pub grub. Always busy, which is a good thing!
J. P.
Really shocked by the negative reviews as this place serves my number one Sunday Roast in London. The prices are pretty standard for the area, and the food is of such a high quality that I believe it to be really good value. Also, the discretionary service charge and £1 charity donation that is added to your bill is again, standard practice and goes to an amazing local charity (Lexi Cinema).
Really great roast dinners, areas to eat/smoke outdoors and really great service makes this one of my favourite local pubs and one that we'll continue to return to time and time again. Go with friends, family or a date - this place won't let you down.
N. P.
This place is cute and for locals who also welcome newcomers.. We had a live music session downstairs and it was received well by our guests and and folk just hanging out at the bar... Food is not great. Worst chicken wings ever. Everything was under seasoned. Staff are really great. Friendly and helpful. Space is cute for a date, or simply to hang out with friends or family. Decent choice behind the bar and reasonably priced. Wouldn't go out of my way to head back here, but would hop over if it were my local. Music had to be turned down towards the end dye to it not being a music venue and a residential area. Would have been great to have that bit if info when booking the place for live music. Overall a decent pub with great service. Just need to work on food and perhaps atmosphere a bit.
V.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff well maintained social distancing. Advisable to book table in advance but can often get one if it's a small group walking in.
S. R.
Nicely decorated.
Staff are hit and miss. Barman with the nose piercing is surly, lazy and just can’t be bothered.
Rest of the staff were polite and reasonably attentive.
P. D.
Decent pub, in quite a characterless modern building, with pleasant seating outside. More of a local feel than trendy. Ubiquitous beers and ales with the usually overpriced and mediocre wines. I can't comment on food.
D. G.
Great local pub, good selection of beers and good food too. Loving the recent refurbishment it has really made a difference. If you're in the are then pop in.
I. O.
Delicious roast and great service.
R. G.
Overall a nice place. Friendly staff, mostly local customers. Only thing that that brings it down to 4 stars from 5 is their food. More accurately, pricing. Meals they serve are not worth the money they want for it.
A. T.
Great food and friendly service.
A. T.
Great food and drink, atmosphere is vibrant and felt very safe.
L. F.
Though this place looks great that is all it has going for it. The food was dreadful, overpriced and slow to come. They were not busy but my glass remained empty while I ate for over 20 minutes. The lamb shank I ordered, arrived as a cold congealed jelly that smelt and looked like a sachet of cat food. It crossed my mind that I should bring it home for my cat. I did not eat it nor the dry toast it came with. I shared my friends fish which though better than my lamb was greasy and full of bones. Overall an expensive experience that I do not want to repeat!
J. V. d. V.
Great for families. Outdoor dining too.
R. B. -. E. k.
I remember when it was called "The Buccaneer" as well.
It was okay then and do not understand why certain reviewers seem to feel in was intimidating.
The whole area has changed from those time
So what is The Island like now.
I find it lacking a bit in character and the staff are okay.
In the seating area downstairs sometimes the music can be a bit loud, but just talk louder.
Nice during the Spring/Summer when you can sit outside.
It is alright and never tried the food upstairs, but been told it is good.
B. S.
Always a good atmosphere here. The best pub in the area and has loads of outdoor tables making it more likely to get a seat outside in good weather.
Food is good here as well.
B. T.
very well organised, great atmosphere, staff is brilliant, best place to eat/drink in NW10!!!
P. C.
We had a really nice dinner on Halloween night, the remodelling of the restaurant is great, feels like there is a lot more space. Service was good, the waitress was very friendly and we had a great evening
A. B.
Cool hidden away pub. Nice cocktails. Friendly staff
C. O.
Went here to celebrate my birthday with a group of friends. I had tried some other places when organising the night out and because we were a large-ish group (16) I found some places less than enthusiastic and often said we could only eat from a limited and expensive set menu. The Island on the other had couldnt have been more helpful. They created a special set menu for us at a very reasonable price and a good selection which worked for everyone (in particular they have exciting vegetarian options) and made everything so easy. On the night we were well looked after and had a fantastic night, everyone really enjoyed the food. I tasted the seafood starter, the panzanella salad and the charcuterie and all were really tasty and made with good quality ingredients. I had fish and chips for mains which I really enjoyed and heard good things about the steak pie and other main courses too. Overall I would highly recommend this place, especially to a big group as the restaurant was airy and spacious and they have plenty of seating outdoors too if you wanted to arrive early and have a drink in the sun.

When I moved into the area in 1989 both my wife and I were delighted to see there was a Public House at the end of our road....It was then called THE BUCCANEER. However our delight was short lived for when we got round to visiting the said establishment it turned out to be a dirty, dingy place with glasses and seating similarly nasty and unclean. We never discovered whether food was catered for due to our reluctance to stay very long in what subsequently turned out to be a magnet for low-life, drug dealing and the such.
Then to our delight a new company took over the establishment, completely refurbished/transformed it into 'A Place To Be' renamed it THE ISLAND and proceeded to make a name for itself as a 'GASTRO PUB' serving delicious food with wide and varied menus....together with excellent Wine Lists and a wonderful ever-changing selection of Draught Beers/Lagers. It was a pleasure to visit and it naturally became our LOCAL and easily achieved a 5 STAR rating.
Recently however the Restaurant has been disappointing in that items on Menus, whether the regular daily or evening menus or those advertised for for special occasions (eg Mother's Day, Father's Day) run out with monotonous regularity. So much so it becomes embarrassing to invite guests to lunch or dinner and one finds one self asking the waiting staff to tell us what is still available from the menu to offset being told "we're sorry but there's none of that left". Since this has been happening it has reduced its rating to 2/3 STAR. It would appear that not enough supplies are ordered in to guarantee the availability of the items on the menu and that is unforgivable and needs to be rectified quickly before THE ISLAND is turned into a standard local pub with nothing special to offer..and no rating at all! Please don't let that happen!
F. R.
Great vibe, food and service. Had the steak - excellent value for money. Will be back!
M. S.
Great chips. Menu looks good too. Good vibes. Nice local feel. Would definitely come back. And sitting outside area is good too for hot days.
M. E.
Great Service, reasonably priced & dog friendly.
O. G.
Very pleasant smoked salmon sandwich and pint of Hop House 13 (nice to find it on tap outside of Ireland!). Service was a little confused but other than that, not a bad spot.
A. S.
Great covid friendly space. Good outdoor seating. Great food
S. B.
Great friendly atmosphere, good selection of ales and beers on tap, lovely place for a drink; food below par (nice enough although not amazing) definitely will return for a few drinks, not for food.
D. P.
The food served was of the highest standard and so was the service guaranteed good time if you end up in the Island
T. H.
On 8th April 2013 a new manager took over the venue. Not only is he local, but has an impressive track record of turning pubs around that were previously lack lustre. It's early days to write up how it's all going now, but this is the one to keep an eye on. I shall be going back there and will update periodically. I have organised our annual photographers training day in May this year in the nearby Roundwood Park and again it's the closest pub for an after event meal and drinks. The new manager couldn't have been more helpful in organising things so that we have adequate seating and good food. Based on the manager's previous track record, the food is more likely to be great than good, but I will honestly report back once the event has taken place (26th May if you're an interested photographer or foodie).

Lovely pub, welcoming, cosy and good food. We've had a couple of birthdays / baby showers and hired the room downstairs. They're very accomodating
K. T.
Service is always second to none, the food menu is always delicious and changes for variety. Kootos to the head chef.
L.
Nice place, good food. And they allow dogs in!

J. O.
Very good food. Surprised it was not too busy to get a table on Saturday night. Sensible size portions.
J. L.
Tried out the new Island after it reopened in sept 2019. Excellent food, lovely staff and great service. Definitely worth a visit.
M. M.
Good pub which is animal friendly and provided quick service with polite staff. I have not tried the food but it certainly looked nice.
I. K.
Very relaxed and popular with young mums with small babies
L. L.
Fantastic pub. Good food without losing that local pub atmosphere. Staff seem really nice and always make you feel welcome.
h.
Staff as awesome as always. Some people where not great at the rules, hats off to the staff dealing with them. I felt safe 🙏
R. W.
Staff were exhausted and slow, probably as it was bank holiday Monday of Carnival. Decent selection of beers. Good outdoor seating.
n. S.
Great pub! Impeccable service from all the team, especially from Harry! Will be back soon!
J. C.
Went for lunch today with my wife and had some amazing food, really nice re-touch to the venue after recently being taken over. Defo going back for more.
T. S.
Good place, staff were good and friendly. Roast chicken was nice, not too packed for Sunday lunch (at least early on).

I really like this pub. It’s a bit expensive but food isn’t good and nice decor. Unfortunately we went today as a family, with my newborn and my elderly grandfather, we encountered such rude service from the waiter with the now ring that we left halfway through the meal. Poor poor service. The manager tried to make it up with a round of drinks but left such a poor taste that we just left. Shabby

Good food but not great. I was particularly unlucky to get a totally tasteless burrata. A bit pricey for the food quality.
S. S.
What a wonderful place... It's so well laid out with lovely decor. Nice people, good selection of drinks. A bit expensive but to be expected for the area... On the downside, however, beware the 'Small Plates' ... for that much money It would be nice to have more than 1 mini slice of toast or more than 7 slithers of mini squid strips. Service charge added for one delivery of 2 small plates of food to accompany our drink is a bit of a liberty
G. M.
Great food, beer and atmosphere
