Reviews of The Market Porter
A. S.
Located next to the Borough Market, less than 5 minute walk to London Bridge Underground station.
Very tasty pub food. My go-to is mashed potato and sausages.
D. H.
Excellent staff. Don't let the busy facade put you off there's a quiet dining area upstairs serving excellent food. Above "pub grub" standard. And you can tell it's been made with care. Well done Market porter

Right in the heart if Brough Market and a historic little pub. Changed a lot to accommodate the tourist trade compared to when I worked in the area 15 years ago, lots more seating and playing jazz music which would never have been on back then 😄. It's still a good old fashioned pub but more focus now on food then there used to be and covid means it's not as bustling as it was. One of the beers we had was sour and undrinkable, bar staff not really bothered (took it off the tap list after our comment but we had to buy a replacement where most places would have replaced for free) expect to pay around £5.50 for a pint. Can't comment on food as we didn't eat here but customers seemed to be enjoying it. They don't seem to have any bar snacks like crisps either (at least they didn't when we visited - maybe to get you to buy proper food instead) there is a small gazebo outside and tables but I think this is temporary due to the pandemic, normally there are no seats/covering outside.
S. B.
Decent food at a decent price.
Beer is always excessively expensive in London, but there was a decent range available.
Would have liked a larger serving on the plate, but satisfied enough to want to return.

Great looking Victorian pub close to Borough Market. The cask beer on offer was in good order. Internally, the hostelry needed redecorating in a more traditional style. The person whom I believe to be the Manager was not someone with any personality and appeared quite rude at times. Service and the way drinks were presented left a lot to be desired.
P. H.
Even after all these months of Covid-related pandemonium, The Market Porter retains its splendid mix of high-quality bat staff, great ales and a good atmosphere to enjoy a pint or three. There is no better place for a lunchtime pint in London.
H. P.
Cute traditional pub in the middle of a British market !
Visiting London for the week and visited on three occasions always greeted by the same friendly helpful bar staff Shivaugn she was knowledgeable and had some great tips on sightseeing and date nights whilst we visited London for our honeymoon.
Was a bit busy a few nights and staff seemed overworked but again made to feel welcomed every time. By ‘chirpy shivaugn’
For authentic British pub culture I think we found it.
S.
Nice restaurant upstairs to the pub. I'm not sure people know it's there as it isn't well sign posted. It is very quiet in in restaurant so there is a lack of atmosphere and the bright lighting doesn't help either. The menu is very limited but the food is well prepared. Also no wine list which was odd for a restaurant above a pub! Just the choice of 3 red wines.

Lovely pub in the heart of Borough market. We stopped off for a drink on a Saturday night. The pub was very lively, music playing, but with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Lots of local ales on offer and also some from around the Home Counties too. Staff are very efficient and there were plenty on to cope with demand, good service. Recommended.
S. C.
Friendly staff and great tasting beer... I live in the sticks and I enjoyed this pub.. recommend the IPA
D. S.
I booked the upstairs dining room for 30+ people for a work Chritstmas dinner/party. The food was great, came out in good time and with no problems. All the guests were very happy.
The staff were really firendly and they had done a great job of making the place feel very festive. I recommend anyone book an event here - they really take good care of you.
C. C.
A good traditional pub with an interesting selection of beers on tap. It has plenty of space and attentive staff. Standing tables outside give an entertaining view of Borough market and a view of the top of the Shard. Definitely worth another visit.
M. P.
Good selection of beers and ciders. Staff dealt with a dodgy pint quickly and without fuss. With a high turnover of visitors, you don't have to wait long for a seat. Back always a bit quieter and out front is heaving, though more organised with barriers and heaters now.
D. K.
We live local just had a lovely Sunday lunch shame the Resurant was cold. And had beer in the bar before that cold as well no heating in the pub at all.Must say all the staff were very good and helpful.
J. W.
Another favourite. Atmospheric old London boozer. Good selection of beers at City prices. Room to stand outside and chat to friends. Fast, friendly service. A few TV's to watch the sport. London Bridge station is across the road so usually full of City workers.
J. W.
Always an excellent meeting and drinking pub in the London Bridge area with friendly bar staff who will have a chat as well as get your drinks quickly. Always pleased to go there to meet friends for an evening or a quick pint on the way home from Borough Market.
S. R.
Good place for sit down and have a beer after walking around borough market
C. K.
Always call in for a pint when visiting Borough Market. Good selection of beers, will get very busy.

The Market Porter restaurant in Borough Market, part of the Market Taverns, is one hidden gem. The dining room is a lovely quiet hideaway, nestled above the busy pub downstairs, with views over bustling Borough Market. It’s quaint, radiating an old-fashioned pub vibe inside, yet it’s pretty cosy. We visited one Saturday at prime time, and it was still very quiet. The staff were friendly from the off, offering help and ensuring we hadn’t forgotten to check out the specials.
Being a pub too, The Market Porter offers twelve traditional, award-winning ales as well as a selection of wines, soft drinks and a handful of cocktails. The classic Aperol Spritz was perfectly prepared, as we clutched onto the end of the warm autumn weather. The Twinkle however stole the show – a mix of Champagne, vodka and elderflower, it was lightly sparkling and beautifully refreshing. If you’re not an ale lover, and are a little impartial to a fizz, I’d definitely recommend a Twinkle.
The seasonal menu features roughly six starters, plus there were a couple on the specials board when we visited – don’t forget to check that board! They weren’t the usual’s you would find on a gastro pub menu and included a thai beef salad and arancini.
We tried the Hot Smoked Salmon Scotch Egg (£9), which was fantastic. The smoked salmon full of flavour, tender and flaky, had a beautiful light bread coating, and soft boiled egg inside. The horseradish and curried fennel mayo which accompanied the scotch egg, was creamy and rich in flavour, complimenting it well. This one was quite a big starter. The Toasted Sourdough topped with Creamed Mushrooms and Onion Crust (£8) did not disappoint either. The mushrooms were rich in that signature umami flavour, weren’t overly creamy, and there were plenty of them.
The eight mains on the menu when we visited, gave off more of that gastro pub feel, with Beer Battered Haddock, a Rib Eye Steak, Market Porter Pie and a Chicken Kiev making an appearance. The special board on our visit featured another beef number and The Market Fish Special – Seabass with Sweet Carrot Puree, which we could not resist.
The Seabass (£15) was delicate, with a fab crispy skin. It had a superb flavour. The Sweet Carrot Puree was a great way to serve carrots. It was indeed sweet, very smooth and complimented the Seabass very well. It’s quite a light meal, so sides are a must if you are hungry. The Chips (£3.75) were neither thin and crispy nor thick and chunky. They were crisp yet fluffy, and perfect for picking/sharing. The Daily Veg (£3.75) was a portion of Tenderstem broccoli when we visited, and it was served delightfully a la dente.
We also tried the Kale & Pumpkin Risotto with Chestnut Sage and Parmesan (£12.50). It was a delicious creamy, soft, autumnal dish. The chestnut pieces were plentiful, and the long strips of parmesan delicately placed on top added a rich, melty, cheesiness. I loved it! This might be the only veggie option, but it’s a fantastic one!
The Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6) with Butterscotch Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream, obviously caught our attention being lovers of a good one. Unfortunately it didn’t quite live up to others as it was a little dry and not overly sticky. However, the butterscotch sauce was fantastic and the vanilla ice cream beautifully potent in flavour and super creamy. It was still a nice end to the meal.
The Market Porter restaurant in Borough Market is a fab hidden quiet spot overlooking the market. It is a great restaurant to escape the hustle and bustle to, with some great food, reasonably priced drinks and a relaxed, cosy and friendly atmosphere.
K. R.
Lovely pub right next to borrow market. Very nice location. Sunday Roast is lovely. Can recommend the beef but other options are great as well. Staff is friendly and drinks are reasonably priced.
L. D.
Had the burger & chips. Chips were lovely, but the burger was a bit dry. Bar service was friendly & efficient
D. H.
City adjacent pub, good selection of beers, lagers and other drinks. Nothing fussy but does the job. Staff were friendly and efficient.
D. N.
Legendary pub bang in the centre of Borough Market. Loads of character. Extensive range of ales and lagers. Also has food menu. Opens at 6am during the week.
p.
Good classic pub with large variety of beers on draft
V. S.
A traditional pub very good value for money and food presented well, staff were polite and welcoming. The 1st floor dining room is a good place to watch the comings and goings.in the marlet
M. M.
Reasonable value for drinks and good selection of real ale. Venue, location and ambiance very good.
N. R.
A busy Saturday at Borough Market. A pub I like & frequent periodical on visits to London Bridge. Friendly & warm welcome, great beers, just let down by the state of the loos.
A. T.
Famous pub in Borough Market. Does food if you are early enough.liked it a lot!!
J. G.
Love this pub, service was a bit slow today but to be fair footfall ebbs and flows. Been coming here for years and its updated its beers but kept its traditional feel.
J. G.
Beautiful food. Beautifully kept beer. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, brilliant service.
S. B.
Been here for the last 3 years for our work Christmas do food is always good and staff are always friendly the bar downstairs is good always has lots of different beers to choose from and is always busy in the evenings
P. M.
Lovely pub. Great food and friendly staff
H. N. K. N.
Been here for dinner with my family. The dinning room was cute, and not busy on a Friday night. Food and drinks are good, pretty nice view if you are near the windows but we were a bit annoyed with the noisy background caused by the big table behind us.
D. P.
Proper pub, great selection of beer's, didn't eat, but food looked great, despite it being so busy, Staff friendly and quick serving, Place has a great atmosphere.
M. S.
Great bar right next to Borough Market. I was here 28/5/19 and had really nice food and great service in the upstairs restaurant. They easily managed and understood my gluten free food requirement. Automatically adding a service charge let's it down a bit though. I will revisit.
P.
It's tempting to open with "cheap and cheerful pub grub" but as we aren't local or even UK residents we have no real idea of "local cheap". It seems cheap(ish) compared to some of the eyeball blistering dining prices we've encountered in London but we're never here long enough to centre on anything other than a guess. We'll call it moderately cheap despite some reviewers noting "a bit pricey". We've used this one for about four annual vacations so far and the attraction, the Sunday roast, has generally proved to be reliable. A "trio" roast comprising beef, lamb and pork, supplemented with roast potatoes, fresh green beans, a large Yorkshire pud' and a tasty gravy. Generous slabs of hand cut meat, all with good taste but none, on this visit, being particularly friendly to the jaw muscles and the lamb, in particular, being perhaps sourced from the organisation that does the retreads for London buses. Meat cuts ... contrary at the best of times. Accompaniments all good with a middle of the road Pinot Grigio at a middle of the road price. Will probably try again next year.
S. P.
Excellent pub on the edge of the market with a good range of ales and beers, and a friendly welcome
T. C.
Been coming here for years. It just gets better each time. Outdoor covered area a great idea. Well done.
A. L.
Traditional pub located in Borough Market they also serve food upstairs. Great place to meet up with friends before heading on the the next place, as its close to London Bridge Station and easy to spot. Gets very busy and you can expect to pay the usual London prices for a pint etc. At the time of writing this it was around £5.20. Definitely worth a look
M. L.
Great pub in the heart of the market... well known, great for outside drinking after work... look down the road and you’ll see the set location for the shoot out seen in lock stock and two smoking barrels.
A. W.
Great place always a buzz around Borough Market too real london feel in this pub
T. D.
Lovely little pub with great music! 😊
O. W.
Great pub. Good beer and good service
T. R.
Lovely place to go for a pint of Guinness.
Friendly staff with a smile on their faces.
Popular with young people.
Plastic glass if drinking outside.
s. c.
Good prices and friendly staff! :)
A. B.
Great pub with an outside area right in the middle of borough market.
J. S.
Great food and beer as usual. The only problem was "social distancing" and the number of unreasonable customers with half a pint of beer, or half a glass of wine, occupying the limited number of tables under cover FOR AN HOUR OR MORE, and preventing other customers from sitting down and eating at lunch time. This was the fault of selfish inconsiderate customers, not the fault of the management and staff.

The Market Porter
❤️One of my favourite Borough Market pubs. Nestled on the corner of the market itself, this pub is great place for a pit stop as you shop and sample the markets produce.

Lovely pint of Porter the other day. Ales here are well kept, well varied and well poured. Staff know their stuff too.
m. c.
Great beer selection and atmosphere. My typical type of spit and sawdust pub.
D. J.
Fabulous London pub. Beer is always excellent as is the choice and they have really good staff. This is a must for anyone to visit whilst in the area.
D. B.
Very atmospheric old pub, music a bit loud though
J. 9.
Superb business Xmas lunch upstairs at the Market Porter. Service couldn't have been any better, lovely lady (sorry didn't get your name) running the show couldn't have been more helpful. Food good, drink good, fantastic table with views over the market. We'll be back.
K. H.
Packed and full of hustle, "propper pub" packed with the more mature gent with a pint and a belly laugh ... good friendly bunch.
P. D.
Good ales but could really do with a spruce up. Quite grubby and unwelcoming interior, although they made a good effort with the outdoor seating during lock down.
S. S. (.
Had a great fish and chips in the dining room upstairs. Classic pub with nice atmosphere.
C. N.
Great pub in Borough Market serving good variety of ales and lagers. Take away only and contactless payment at the moment but well set up with friendly efficient staff keeping queues to a minimum with quick service.
V. R.
Excellent fish and chips! Good service. Big portions.
D. S.
Beef wellington was a masterpiece. The finest ingredients throughout, beautifully cooked.
F.
You cannot help but feel sorry for the Landlord and his team of willing helpers who are putting on a great show of hospitality in the face of the latest Covid rules. They try their best, they offer bright and cheerful service, there are a good selection of ales so well worth a visit if you are in the area. Just a shame the restrictions mean that they cannot get more visitors into the pub.
E. H.
Great pub, great food, great service no need to say any more except you need to try for yourself.
w. t.
Crowded n noisy place. Good for couple of cask beers n food. Haven't much choice of drinks.
R. L.
Good British pub food. Good service!! ill be back
B. C.
Busy pub in Borough Market, good range of beers available.
E. S.
A bit chilly but a good pint of cider
A. M.
Only had drinks but found it very pleasant.
Y. H. (.
My first meal in London. Food was ok service is nice. Reasonable price here I think.
J. M.
We have just returned home after a great night at the Market Porter pub, great atmosphere even in these difficult times. The pub does a great job in safe distancing and we felt safe.
We were very well looked after by Daniel (our Everton friend), we talked football with him and we had great banter for several hours on Saturday evening. Before a curry in Brick Lane.
Great job Daniel and to the team as well, wewill be back.
E. E.
A nice pub in a very lively location close to the Borough Market.
B.
The pub downstairs is great! But the food upstairs shouldn't be missed out as well!
S. H.
Busy place especially post work but good atmosphere, excellent beers and stellar service
C. C.
Good choice of ales and beers in a great location. It's very busy if the weather is nice so you pretty much have to stand outside, but if the weather is poor then there are some tables inside for a nice cozy pint. Dont know if they do food, but if you are there during the day then Borough market is a good location for food...!!!!
M. H.
Delicious Sunday roasts – succulent meats, tasty greens and scrumptious potatoes. Only things that could do with some improvement are the Yorkshire pudding (not as fluffy as they should be) and the amount of stuffing that comes with the roast chicken – mine was the size of a £2 coin). Efficient and friendly staff too, perhaps a bit to intense on the upsell but not in an uncomfortable way. Make sure to book in advance.
R. L.
Proper good old English pub. Great atmosphere and the pints don't taste too bad either. Perfect place to start your night out or just catch up with friends.
M. T.
Great spot for a drink especially if you like beer.
K. P.
Lovely roast lamb dinner. Highly recommended
G. K.
Located on a busy corner of the Borough Market, this is a lively pub. There was quite a crowd on the sidewalk listening to the live music. Inside we had an excellent dinner with very good service. It was a lovely evening.
P. F.
Good and well known boozer in Borough Market. The beer is decent but does get v crowded. That said you can stand outside and the bar staff are v efficient from my experience. Situated opposite Neal's Yard Diary which stocks a wide range of excellent cheeses if of interest.
V. L.
Overall a satisfactory boozer. It is generally horrifically busy because of its location. Service is generally pretty quick though. I haven't eaten here for years but the food is perfectly OK as I recall, albeit nothing special. As the main pub for the market, this opens early so if you're looking for a drink early in the morning, this is the right place.
s. w.
Great beers. Right next to the market where you can get a huge range of amazing street food. Salt beef, crazy cheese, hot, cold, spicy. Great place to have a drink and food. £5/pint.food in pub is standard pub fare
B. H.
Wow!! Such incredible service. Our host/server was absolutely amazing, such a warm welcome and the food was just incredible! We had a rough experience with a restaurant (Elliot’s) up the street and decided to come here. I’m so glad we did! We had the beef/veggie pie and the croquette starter. Thanks again for such a great experience!!
F. K.
An exquisite example of an old London market pub. It's not been ruined at all over the decades I've known it, and serves excellent ale. The whole Borough Market area has become very trendy and touristy now, so your challenge is to find a quiet-ish time to visit.
A. S.
One of the best beef Sunday roasts I've had
I. J.
Great place for a pint surrounded by a great market
S. M.
One of the greatest pubs in London. It is a must visit with fantastic beer, including Harvey's. The pub also offers amazing food, beautiful views and a filming spot from Harry Potter on the 1st floor dinning room. Well worth a visit.
L. G.
Downstairs a 3* but upstairs for food a 4*.
Went here for drinks then decided to get dinner. Getting drinks at first was a bit of a mission, they had the staff,
Just seem to be not concentrating, no situational awareness and distracted by other things rather than serving the drinks which was a bit frustrating.
However upstairs, the service was blinking good and couldn’t ask for more.
It was attentive without being over the top.
The pie was darn decent and most definitely would eat here again.
V. M.
One of the best pubs in Borough Market. It does get busy, so as long as you're prepared to just stand where you can, then there is no better place to chill with a good beer, and watch the bustle of the market.
B. D.
Beer range not what it used to be.
F. L.
Great pub, lively, good selection and very reasonable prices. Loved the ambiance. Would have been 5 but for the fact that the bar staff got my order wrong twice. They also got the charges on my bill wrong. Not ideal.
C. H.
Nice pub, friendly staff. Even though they limited the amount of people going in due to Covid, it was very efficient getting a drink. There was a one way system to the bar, very well thought out.
l. l.
Delicious pies! Will definitely come back!!
P. M.
Excellent historic pub, it was great to be back. Staff were friendly and efficient as always.
L. H.
Lively pub on the edge if the market, great place to people watch, people of all ages, great place to come for a drink after work. Good selection of beer and other drinks. Plastic glasses outside, bollards in place to stop anyone driving through, police presence visible opposite London Bridge tube
G. A.
For years I saw the Market Porter from on high as I rode the train into Charing Cross Station. Then recently I found myself in Borough Market and decided to investigate. I didn't expect anything special given the bland exterior but once inside I could see that it was in fact just that. The spacious bar serves a wonderful selection of ales and the upstairs dining room overlooks the Market. The food is delicious and the service first class. Having discovered the truth about this gem I can't get enough of it.
P. L. (.
One of my favourite pubs in London. Usually packed with tourists and the after work crew so can’t help but be sorry for them at this time.
Also can’t wait to go back when open again
D. A.
Best pub in Borough Market area!
S.
Decent Sunday Roast..
C. G.
Great location and fab food (salmon scotch egg was amazing)!
R. C.
Great old pub
D. G.
Good boozer
R. L.
Proper good old English pub. Great atmosphere and the pints don't taste too bad either. Perfect place to start your night out or just catch up with friends.
C. l.
Old world charm ,in borough market.proper pub.
C. N.
Great pub in Borough Market serving good variety of ales and lagers. Take away only and contactless payment at the moment but well set up with friendly efficient staff keeping queues to a minimum with quick service.
J. H.
Friendly helpful staff. Not the cheapest place but fun.
I. B.
Easily one of the best pubs in London. They always have a great selection of ales for the chunky sweaters and the service is just incredible - the queue can be three deep at the large bar and you'll still get served quickly. The staff are just fantastic. Consequently, it can be quite busy and you may have to stand outside but that's OK, there's plenty of takeaway eateries nearby to grab a snack. I particularly like the empanada place across the road
R. L.
Went here after my last night shift at 7am on Friday, but only for one! Large selection of beers; IPAs, Porters, Wheat, etc and friendly bar staff. A traditional London Boozer; definitely will go again
J. D.
Quintessential market boozer. Excellent and varied drink selection. Food upstairs if you get hungry and the resturant will happily serve you an ale from the bar. Nice touch. Some places are far too sniffy.
F. J.
Enjoyable fathers day dinner and hospitable. Natasha was a good waitress and made our day more enjoyable
E. C.
Famous real ale pub around Borough Market, this place is always popular with market goers aswell as local workers. This is a well run clean and friendly place with an impressive changing array of ales. Recommended
G. J.
Fine traditional City old school type pub. Popular with City and South Bank office workers and people connected with Borough Market next door. Polite, efficient staff and a fine pint of Harvey's. Gets crowded just after office hours especially towards the end of the working week.
C. H.
Classic borough market pub. Nice to go there on a quiet night not jam packed as usual.
M. R.
Excellent pub with good beer options, in a fantastic location within the Borough Market. Perfect spot for Saturday afternoon pints.
S.
Christmas brekkie! Lovely drop of Guinness
J. C.
Beautiful lively pub, great selection of rake ale and craft beer.
W. E.
Still one of the best ale houses in London in my opinion. The place gets really busy in the evenings but the bar staff are so switched on that you rarely wait long for a drink. Tip: if it's your first time, avoid walking through the doors and directly up to the bar in front of you. Rather walk in to the right a little and wait to be served from the right hand side of the bar. It'll be quicker.
P. v. B.
Great service and atmosphere. Food was fantastic and there is a good choice of wines.
C. H.
This is one of my all time favourite pubs in London. I have been coming here for years now and seen it in its various forms. It was refurbished in about 2006 and it has gone on from strength to strength. If you happen to be in the area and are visiting from another country, come and try their array of beer from all parts of the country. Just beware of the walking tour visits where the bar can be swamped with 40 visitors all trying to order 1/2 a pint of "black sheep dip" etc..
J. G.
The Market Porter, close to Borough Market is a warm, inviting pub offering a restaurant area with an expansive menu and solid wine list. The pub also serves traditional counter meals. A great selection of lagers and real ales. An added bonus, the pub has a function room available for hire. Overall, a great place for lunch on a cold windy day.
b. w.
Seven of us turned up and they accommodated us without fuss. The meal was lovely and very reasonably priced. Service was great and the young lady who looked after us was extremely professional and cheerful.
Would definitely go again next time we are in London.
A. W.
Good outside space - very busy inside
K. A.
Laura and Cian are amazing, they made my night
a. w.
Glad they still have the Harvey's on, something to look forward after a long walk.
W. R.
Lively pub next to Borough Market with a wide range of real ale available and prices which are reasonable for London. On Thursday/Friday evening expect to struggle to find a table inside and instead join everyone standing outside on the street. Also open from 6am-9am (last orders 8:30am) on Market Days - a hangover from the old days when the market staff went for a drink after their morning's work.
D. B.
Lovely pub next to Borough Market. 10+ Ales to choose from. Gets ridiculously busy in evenings and weekends - best visit weekday lunchtimes. Wooden floors. 1000's of beer memorabilia stuck to the ceiling. Unusually opens from 6-9am Mon to Fri !! Simply great
M. S.
Good range of beers - typical London prices. A reasonable range of snacks in the bar and the restaurant is good - booking advisable. It can get very crowded at lunch times and early evening in the 'tourist season'.
M. F.
Good selection of beers, toilets arw down a flight of stairs, good location in yhe heart of Borough Market. Noise levels a little high. Not for families
M. C.
Always a lively pub even on a Tues before Thursday pay day. Sussex is a nice beer, never had a problem with quality. Shame the barman decided to ring up £4.60 when we paid £9.20 but there you go, that's life!
L. B.
Great place for an early morning drink. Being next to Borough Market it's one of a handful of pubs that serve the night shift crowd. Like popping round here for a quick one after work at 7am.
B. P.
Super Sunday lunch with some really nice staff
M. T.
Good variety of cider and beer - well above average and certainly something for everyone. Not cheap but no more than you'd expect for such a busy location. Good interior too tables and chairs and stools - just like a pub should be in my opinion.
G. H.
Another long standing Borough Market institution, the Market Porter is a lovely pub. The drinks selection is outstanding and has a wonderful, entertaining regular crowd. Be warned though: when the after work crowd hits the pub, it may take a few minutes to get served.
L.
Really nice pub. The food is just amazing, and the staff very nice and welcoming. I really enjoyed it, and hope to be back!
M. B.
Welcoming staff, beer OK too
D. B.
A stout and a scotch egg hit the spot for lunch. Looking for traditional food at the Borough Street market. I'm far from a local here and can't really tell you if the scotch egg is the best within a hundred meters, it's certainly not the only shop that offers the dish. For my first ever scotch egg it was a delight.
A. S.
No fuss, no frills, just a good old fashioned boozer! Great atmosphere, cozy, no attitude. All the ingredients if you're out for a drink or 3. Right in the heart of Borough Market too.
J. M.
Right opposite Borough Market always a good atmosphere to the place kind of timeless you could be in Dickensian times or the 21st century. Affluence mixed with destitution a poor old woman bent double shoes repaired with newspaper and string begging for money to buy food somethings never change although they should. Makes you feel hopeless and ashamed of the government of this country. Brexit what a total waste of time and money. Still I enjoyed my pint but the reality of 21st century Britain is riven with melancholy and exteme inequity.
A. G.
Great Fish & Chips and fair price
E. A.
Really like this pub, it was great to have a beer in the hustle and bustle of Borough market. The only thing stopping it getting 5 stars it that the drinks are expensive. Great pub though and would recommend
S. P.
A traditional pub for the real ale fan. Wide choice of guest ales and Harvey's Sussex Best is permanently available. The pub website describes the pub as a daily beer festival which I think sums it up nicely. The pub is situated opposite Borough Market so you can enjoy a pint or two while watching the world go by.
M. F.
Had an absolutely great night at The Market Porter, I booked this pub for a work drinks event.
The staff were friendly and amaisingly helpful, I will absolutely will be booking them again. They made booking the venue incredible easy and recommended the chiefs special buffet which was delicious and all made on site, real authentic british food.
Excelent coustomer service, the staff really went above and beyond for us.
Thanks so much Sarah, Eva & Market Porter Chiefs 🍻
T. M.
Great quality beer in a brilliant location
C. G.
Great location and fab food (salmon scotch egg was amazing)!
N. L.
Selection of ales good though not as many handpulls as there used to be. Pleasant evening
S. S.
Have been going this place irregularly for over 15 years and it's not changed a great deal in all that time. It's always been good, with an interesting selection of ever changing beers long before that was a trend in pubs, and remains a favourite for tiple.
F. C.
Smells a bit strange. There were also flies....
D. H.
Amazing old London pub, situated right next to The Market. Uses to use this place when I worked in Southwark. Like most London pubs, it has its fair share of tourists, but this isn't too bad, rather it adds to the charm (unless you get a group tour of 50 buying a quick drink). The real ale is good and they usually have a great range, I've even had the lovely Harveys (Lewes, Sussex) beer in here. I'm also pretty sure they have an early license to cater for the market staff, but I've never had a 7am pint in here. Check it out.
r. s.
Just the best. For any Americans wanting to get a taste of an authentic British pub in a tourist destination this is the one. Make sure you try the Porter. Your taste buds will then forgive you for drinking Bud all these years!
G. P.
Very good pub in borough market. Good selection of beer and a nice feel to it. Often overcrowded, but still great place for a boozer
K. P.
Shame they stopped craft beer
G. C.
Amazing place, been coming here for year's from portsmouth, good beer friendly staff and the Atmosphere is incredible , we only come up to drink in this pub and eat the best food in the world
L. C.
My favourite pub near borough market for lunch. unfortunately don't do dinner. Can recommend the mushroom risotto and lamb shanks followed by apple crumble and custard. In evening traditional pub with large selection of beers but if it's cold and you cant stand outside gets very crowded.
D. E.
Doesn’t get much better than the Market Porter a true London institution. Borough Market and the Market Porter is always on my to do list for anyone visiting London. Harvey’s on cask is a major plus.
E. J.
Fantastic location, building, staff and beers.
L. M.
A proper boozer. Has resisted the temptation to modernise and lose its character. Good selection of ales, porters and IPAs. Outside drinking in the market, so great atmosphere. One of my favourites in this area.
R. K.
A great pub just next to Borough Market. Old pub feel. Friendly staff. Weekends are quieter than weeknights. Especially Sundays.
D.
Excellent beers in a popular venue. Runs market hours. Despite being really busy I was served within a minute or two of waiting at the bar.
G. H.
Best pub in Borough market with a huge choice of guest beers. Inside can be cramped but the cosiness helps make the place, otherwise stand outside and dodge the local traffic while friends pop in to buy another round.
M. A.
Visited this nice old pub several times, pretty much every time when I was in London. It didn't change much over the last 10 years. Despite many new trendy places in the same area, it's always packed. Simply love it, love the atmosphere.
L. F.
As always a lively place,I visit here at least once a year on my Christmas market run on Xmas Eve. Not complete without a pint( or two ) here. Despite the busyness the staff are friendly and efficient.
D. S.
Proper London boozer with a good ale and cider selection, as long as you ignore the miserable manager who refuses to accept when his beer is off.
Great location, you'll be lucky if you get a table. Toilets smell worse than festival toilets.
A. B. (.
Very nice and relatively unspoiled. Open from 6-9am Monday to Friday. Good beer and cider selection. A bit noisy inside when busy but great outside enjoying the comings and goings.
I. J.
Really busy little pub, the food was very good as they need to compete with the market stalls, worth having a drink with your meal and experience the vibrant atmosphere of southern river dwellers.
P.
Staff are quite good generally. Good beer choice. When it gets busy it can get a bit messy and sticky downstairs because of spilt beer not being cleaned but then.agaun it is a pub!
G. S.
My guy Gary, served me in the best way possible, even on new years eve, very friendly and kind. Helped me with the choices of beverage for the night. Absolutely amazing!!
m. h.
Always seem to end up in this pub whenever we're in Borough. Small, good section of beer and can stand outside should it be busy.
W. P.
Staple go-to pub in Borough Market. Decent ales, some cask, and good service Nice to stand outside and catch some rays if the weather is good. The Rake is my other go-to in the market but offers a different experience.
Z.
What a nice and friendly pub! It's a nice spot and plenty of for flow. On a nice summer's evening it's a great spot to catch up over some drinks.
R. D.
The food was really good and the staff very friendly.
A busy pub just on the edge of Borough Market,
Very nice atmosphere, lively but not overcrowded with an upstairs dining room.
A. C.
The standard of Borough Market. Been going forever with 10-15 casks on tap. Busy most days of the week with a lot of pavement (and street!) Drinking during the week. Solid choice for a beer in Brough Market.
I. L.
Fun and authentic place to eat with good views of the market from the second floor. I've always been there for roast, which is pretty good. Reasonable prices. Service always pretty good and on time.
M. M.
Need to try this pub again as I don't think my visit was typical of most, didn't overly enjoy either the beer or ambiance on this occasion. Happy to be proved wrong on a second visit.
Tried it a second time and it was much, much better.
R. T.
Lots of real ales, but oddly lacking dark beers most of the time. Usually crowded, unless you come late, with lots of standing room outside, beside Borough Market. Very basic interior with limited seating.
S. N.
Visited many times over the last decade or so. It's got a great range of beers, typical prices for the area. Can be extremely busy inside and out making it hard to get served at times.
j. p.
nice pub friendly staff
L. B.
Fabulously attentive and friendly staff.. Great selection of beers and spirits Food is also great and sourced from the market! All around brilliant atmosphere and vibe to it.. Highly recommended
A. H.
This is a great, traditional boozer with excellent beer and tasty food. It only loses a star for the poor upkeep of the ladies' toilets.
B. S.
Bog standard pub in Borough market. Nothing special in terms of offer but a good place to hang out in summer if you want to have a bieer outside in the buzz of Borough market. It also has Monmouth Coffee next door if you have non-drinkers with you and want to go in the daytime.
R. C.
A great pub really nice locations to. There is a wonderful selection of beers and wines. I would highly recommend this place. The venue is a classic vintage designed very cosy to
D. B.
Excellent pub, great ales, bitters, fast service, super busy around commuter hour as those in the know have a few beers before they get the train from London Bridge. Proper pub.
D. P.
Harvey's is beautiful here. Great selection of beer too, a must visit when in this part of London.
M. C.
Borough Market is a zoo, but this place has an upstairs with amazing staff and proper ales where you can watch the havoc outside. Could not recommend highly enough!
J. P.
Nice place to have a drink when visiting Borough Market. Many local during their lunch time.
Large choice of beers, including cask ales.
Reasonably priced foods.
K. P.
Superb pub located smack dab in the center of Borough market. Several well kept cask ales and a great lunchtime buzz.
N. C.
Lovely pub quick efficient bar staff
O. B.
Spot on place for an after (or before, or in between) market drink.
They have a huge selection of draught ales, including two by Sharp's. Also some lagers and 2 or 3 ciders of course.
The service is a bit brisk, and even a sealed food item from the market will get you told off (even though nobody would be daft enough to eat outside food in a food serving pub), so you better put it away before coming in. The place is a bit too dark but that's just the kind of pub style.
T. S.
My favourite pub in borough market. Always a lively atmosphere, a good choice of beers and a nice restaurant upstairs.
P. R.
Down the market? Sun shining? Then why the hell aren't you here?? Sure you have to dodge the odd (very frequent) van or truck trying to kill you while you're necking your pint, soaking up the Cockney market and making fun of the Harry Potter tour goofs. But the beer is good, the price is right and it's a market tradition!
A. H.
Good atmosphere, good beer, good location. Staff excellent as always. Been coming here for years cos it's a decent pub!
G. S.
Over crowded. Full of yuppies. But special. Occupying a corner space with sights sounds and smells of one of the most authentic London markets there are. A must.
A. G.
Excellent hostelry in Borough Market. Fine pint of Harvey's bitter. Recommended but can be very busy.
J. W.
A great traditional pub adjacent Borough Market with excellent real ale choice, can be very busy lunchtimes - well deserved, and decent lunchtime food too.
A. L.
Very lively, busy pub with 8 or so ales on. Ale always kept well, most of staff friendly, food not as good as it was 2-3 years ago.
J. p.
Best pub in Borough market
Well worth a visit
Good food
Nice bar staff
M. H.
The Market Porter is the original and best Borough Market pub. Always busy, especially after work with folks on their way back home from London Bridge or on sunny market days. Swing by on a sunny market day to grab a pint and watch the bustling Borough Market crowd do their thing.
J. W.
Always good service here and beer selection very good.
B. D.
This pub located smack in the middle of Borough market. Great for Friday lunchtime drinks or Thursday evening, very fast service.
Great atmosphere, ideal for a summers evening
P. B.
Met up with friends for a grown up night out, ate in restaurant upstairs and staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. However would not recommend pink grapefruit and pineapple cider.
S. T.
Good selection of real ale, great service, friendly pub worth a visit next time you are in the Borough Market.
G. P.
Lively and located in the heart of Borough market. Good selection of well kept ales. Can get busy and service can suffer at peak times.
N. E.
Pleasant enough drinking establishment.
Though alas, not especially cheap & stripped of most of it's undoubted extensive history & character. A decidedly bland market tavern.
M. H.
Good food and cosy upstairs (overlooking the Borough Market), friendly staff, and good buzz downstairs with afterwork crowds (drinks only downstairs), recommended.
C. G.
Excellent pub with lots of atmosphere
The beer selection was as always good and beer was well served
A good all round pub and is well worth a visit
B. R.
hahaha google reviews don't you just love them, people complain because it's too full. It's too full because it's popular, it's popular because they serve good ales, and have new ales every couple of days. Nicely priced too 5 stars!
D. D.
Where: The Market Porter - London
What: A ''covered'' outdoor market
How was it: It's an outdoor market near the London bridge. We liked it. The area and ambiance was nice.
Grade: Eli = 4, Serge = 4
Recommend: Yeah, drop in when you are near the London Bridge
L. H.
Justly famous pub, can get crowded, but great beer and service.
J. H.
Gets very packed but great atmosphere and good for after work drinks. The price is reasonable and I go time and time again. Great to meet friends and the decor is so so. I come here often and will continue to come.
H. M.
Great night in the porter. Danny the Liverpudlian was our knight in shining armour. What a great a bloke. What a great man. What a great human.
S. M.
Very good British menu and super prices regarding the location. Good choices of beers as well.
J. W.
Great pub in Borough market. Very busy spilling out on to the street. Boiler with a market license so it open most of the time
B. K.
Used to frequent here a lot 20 years ago when working. Last week stood in the street outside drinking with friends reminiscing. Excellent staff.
L. D.
Great food, friendly staff and fair prices. Definitely worth stopping by to recharge your batteries if you're visiting London!
J. L.
Great pub with a fine selection of real ales, gins and whiskies right in the heart of Borough Market.
C. G.
Great pub. Stopped off there on a Sunday afternoon. Polite bar staff and good beer. Will be back.
G. G.
Great pub!
g. p.
Can get very crowded, staff is nice but be prepared to wait a bit at peak time.
Nice selection of drinks, food is OK but nothing amazing.
All in all, its a good choice for a drink after work if you don't mind a bit of noise and being squashed a bit.
F. W.
Great range of beers and even on a packed Friday night they had enough staff so there were no long waits at the bar.
J. C.
Always pay this pub a visit if I have time at London Bridge station. Good atmosphere and very friendly staff.
E. N.
Busy sticky pub, but in a good way. It isnt the more recently renovated or up to date place but thats the charm. Not much seating either so expect to stand and you will not be disappointed.
R. L.
great london pub. with an amazing fish and chip peas. the beers are great too. it's great to stand there after shopping around. must try!!
A. C.
Great old school English pub located on the edge of the markets. Lots of real ale available. Go to the markets then get a beer.
D. M.
Its loud and busy, but also relaxed and great tapas, loved the place! . Will definitely visit again!
D. B.
Nice pub with a good selection of beer and well located next to Borough Market.
M. B.
Good value fixed prix menu. Staff friendly and professional. But I hate it when they put on the 12.5% service charge without asking.
Æ. R.
Best dang pub in Borough Market! Decent selection and seating, awesome staff.
D. L.
Basic, solid pub with crisp cider. I really enjoyed myself here.
C. D.

C. N.
Lush little cozy bar 👍
D.
Been there a few times before always nice atmosphere and a great selection of real ales 👍always very busy but still a great time
M. W.
Nice pub, but eye-wateringly expensive: how can two pints cost £10:40? And for that you don't even get a "please" from the barmaid!
M. P. (. P.
Good selection of drinks. Typically it's very busy after work though so be prepared to wait a few minutes to get served
J. S.
Excellent boozer at Borough Market, it's usually very busy though so don't expect a seat.
G. M.
Really liked the restaurant upstairs. The service was good and food was fresh and tasty. Menu is changing from day to day. Like to go here again someday
M. G.

M. J.

I always meet awesome people when I`m there.
Cheers
P. W.
Great pub just off the beaten track with a wonderful selection of beers
M. J.
Always good for beer and solid food, however staff turnover impacts their knowledge of the many beers they do have. Open 06:00-08:00 for the market, but no food!
D. S.
It is busy, continuously drawing a crowd for the ails, but it's also curiously well managed, and you don't have to wait that long considering how busy it it - great work guys.
A. F.
Ok pub
Very busy and a good selection of ale
Bit pricey but that's to be expected.
S. H.
Great buzz here but don't go between 4.30pm and 5.30pm if you want a quick pint, it takes ages to get served.
T. B.
A lovely pub with nice food and an extremely friendly waitress. Worth a visit!
