Reviews of The Marquess Tavern

An absolutely beautiful pub. Made to feel very at home. The hardest working bar staff I have seen yet also made time to talk to us. Highly recommend 😊
M. J.
Nice pub, stopped in there for an impromptu drink as I was doing the New River Walk. It's in a great location and the staff seemed friendly. I hope I get a chance to return c

One of the best for atmosphere for pubs. So cozy, thanks to the decor and furniture. Good drinks and cocktails and fun selection of board games. I've come back here a few times and it's consistent. If you're in the mood for a quieter drink and good food try here.

Amazing pub! Lovely local. New management. Should be more
Lively! Good food and drink

Visited the pub today. Good selection of drinks and an amazing food menu which I am yet to sample but from great reviews from friends I have high expectations.
Nice beer garden and attentive service from the barmaids.
Will be back again

Lovely pub with friendly staff and delicious food.

Discovered this beautiful pub on a Friday night. There’s a lovely outdoor patio area, with and without heaters. There’s also an indoor fireplace for the winter.
The food is great, I stuck to the standard fish and chips and friends has steak and veggie dishes. Everyone loved it.
The staff were also friendly and efficient. Good vibes in here. Can’t wait to go back

Editing my previous review after the worst Sunday Roast I’ve ever had, about a month ago I. The place is nice but the food is dreadful. Some of the staff are great, some have an attitude and are unhelpful. Good for a drink, nothing else

A great looking venue let down by pushy staff. After booking a table, for Sunday lunch, we were rushed though a meal in a half empty bar and told we couldn’t stay inside with our drinks and forced into the cold garden because people needed our table.
The waitress said “standing at the bar isn’t allowed” even though other bar staff were chatting with the 10+ other people standing at the bar.
The food was OK, roast beef a bit overdone but a nice selection of vegetables. The vegetarian Wellington was a pleasant change from the standard nut roast served at venues nearby.
I’d try this venue again and hope the staff issues were a one off.

Really enjoyed the calamari starter and the t bone grill. Would definitely visit again and try the other dishes. Great pub inside with outdoor seating for the sunny days!

Quite the surprise! In an unremarkable location this pub serves some cracking pub grub to a really tight standard. There is a great (reasonably priced) wine list and the surroundings encourage you to sit and enjoy. Staff are all helpful, courteous and efficient. In fact, I almost want to keep this a secret!

Pleasant gastropub in the heart of Canonbury. The Marquess tavern is an old established pub with two beer gardens, front and rear, a dining area to the rear and casual tables dotted around the pub.
Reservations are accepted here, advisable on Sundays and weekend evenings.
Food is good but above average pricing for the quality and area.

We enjoyed the ambience and the quietness bit the staff pushed us to consume drinks constantly. Apart from that the place lovely.

Stumbled across this place after going for a walk. Lovely interior and good snack food and beer. Dinner is spot on. Also has a number of board games to relax with.
A. D.
Really nice vibe (buzzy but not crowded), good selection of drinks and great playlist! The staff were very friendly- we’re really glad to see this place open and we’ll 100% be back! Very lucky to have it as our local

Supporting local is very important to me. The services was wonderful and the place very clean and busy which is great to see.
A. M.
Fab roast, great service, dog friendly and really good veg roast as well
C. D.
A cosy, upmarket gastropub with excellent food and service. I'd call it a restaurant as I don't think people come here just to drink.
The service is very good, more what you'd expect from a posh restaurant than a gastropub.
On weekday lunchtimes it's not too busy or noisy, so it's a good place for working business lunches.
There's a real wood fire in winter.
B. V.
Really great pub. Staff are really friendly. Nice location and very reasonable prices
L. S.
Nice place, family atmosphere, delicious food, recommended for groups of friends.

Dan is the best cocktail bartender in Islington!! Great pub, great food, amazing drinks!!!!
P. C.
Nice pub with Young's beer. Good service from friendly staff, although it's a bit gastro - they insisted on bringing the drinks to the table, which meant that we had to queue at the bar to pay on the way out.
M. S.
Great ambience - stopped by for a drink. Haven't sampled the food menu as yet since it reopened.
A. A.
Great Sunday roasts! Has a little garden at the back for summer dining :-)
S. M.
Cute and cozy local Canonbury pub. Friendly service.
A. D.
Really nice place and one of the few that actually feels like a pub in London
C. G.
This is a good place. It was a pity they had no real beer available when we visited. They said they'd run out, which seemed odd. But I really liked this pub and the staff are great. If they have real beer in future too, it'll be a top drawer pub and a regular haunt.
N. P.
Great to see this place back open and more pubby than before, a good place for a pint and with well priced good food and very friendly service.

We loved our dinner at Marquess Tavern, the staff are really lovely, easy going and nothing is too much trouble. Thank you for having us!
We decided to order majority of the starters and sides as they all sounded really nice! This was a great option for us 3 and we were quite full. We also ordered the sticky date pudding and Eton Mess - they were both so yummy!
A. A.
We had a weekend lunch for 4 in a test-run for possible wedding lunch places at a later time. The food was pretty good, and the decor is lovely. The smell of firewood is always a plus on a cold day. The service was fast and courteous and very friendly. I am ducking one star because the fish dish wasn't too great, and strangely, when we asked for a bit of extra gravy we were charged an extra £1 for it. This is not a cheap pub to be quite so fussy about a bit of extra gravy. I'd pop in for a pint any time if I am in the area though.
B. L.
Friendly staff. Amazing food! Best pub in the area!!
J. G.
Really lovely atmosphere and staff. Feels remarkably like a rustic restaurant with surprising modern touches. I give 4 stars because the burger was pretty unnoteworthy. For a place that makes a big deal out of their food, I'd expect a tasty burger. The fried squid starter was really nice though.

Best pub in the area. Accidentally booked a table here for my grandma’s birthday the day before I actually needed it 🤦🏽♀️. Staff were extremely accommodating and even let me have the table for nine people when their policy is a maximum of eight. Didn’t even charge service charge! Lovely roast dinners with proper portions.
L. K.
Superb service from a happy welcoming team. Great outdoor space- the front catches the sun in the summer. Cute garden at the back. Beautiful decor inside. Tonnes of space. Haven’t tried the food but great selection of wine, beer and ales.
J. I.
Good location and ambience and service is ok. The food though is 'mainstream chic'. Think roast potatoes that are actually dry baked, desserts that have been microwaved and Yorkshire puddings dried out to within an inch of their life. Food here was once good, but it's time for a revamp.
C. A.
Really yummy roast beef dinner in a huge Yorkshire pud :)) Well cooked veg, tasty meat and crispy roasties.
Contrary to many of the reviews below, we found the service to be both swift and super friendly. Only criticism is that it is a little on the expensive side for a day to day pub lunch/dinner but enjoyed all the same. Thank you
A. D.
Good beer, great service
G. C.
This cosy pub located near the new river walk has a truly magical atmosphere with lots of history hiding in each corner. Beautiful secret garden, creative menu for all food lovers (vegetarians and not), large selection of beers, cocktails, gins, wines, and, of course, deserts! Great service by always friendly staff, relaxed environment. Dogs are welcome too! It is definitely a very lovely pub!
A. M.
My favourite pub in London! Great food, never too busy, lovely interior and friendly staff. Small beer garden out the back and front for the summer. Fireplaces, comfy chairs and board games for the winter!
L. C.
Best place I have ever been! Interior is so cosy and the table service makes you feel that extra bit special and totally makes you feel at home. The staff are super friendly and the food is amazing, they even have there own sausage rolls and Scotched eggs!! Don't know what Pierre Thomain below is on about as they DON'T add a service charge. I've been going in for the past 2 years and have never had service charge on my bill. I have even made a point of asking if service charge is on the bill and asked if the wonderful staff recieve the tip as they 100% deserve it. Would recommend to everyone who visits London!
M. M.
A very nice pub, friendly staff, great selection of beers on tap, sadly though the food doesn’t quite live up to everything else. Very average at best. A shame.
C. P.
Great food and drink! Nice staff and atmosphere
C. M.
Come here every weekend/other weekend at the moment and it’s absolutely brilliant! Great food, great beer and amazing staff who’re always extremely helpful! Never lets us down :)
B. R.
So happy this place is finally open! Friendly service and a really nice vibe inside and out.
M. C.
Very nice pub with super attentive and friendly staff. Went as a group of 8 for a Sunday roast and were pleasantly surprised - very, very nice roasts! Will be back very soon!
J. R.
A lovely pub with a great beer garden, hosted by a giraffe. Plenty of board games to choose from. Table service and never too busy as it's tucked away off the beaten tracks.
D. D.
Few years ago staff were rude and food overpriced, but much improved over the last three years or so. Now very welcoming and food has improved. Hope they keep up the good work.
F. S.
Great pub. Amazing food and service. Middle of the road price wise. Very kids friendly and amazing building. A must.
J. S.
The food was lovely. The sticky toffee pudding was soon very good. Staff are lovely and the whole pub was lovely and clean. Top marks.
O. K.
Had a really good Sunday roast here. Good service - staff were attentive. I wonder if the food was a little overpriced but I think that's what you get when you dine in this area.

Lovely pub one of the best in Islington
J. E.
Great staff, cosy atmosphere. Food was tasty but portion size of the vegetable thali was a bit small. Everyone else's roasts looked great though!
N. S. L.
Nice pub and great that is doesn't get too busy. They could do with changing the menu occasionally
C. D.
Lovely local pub with really friendly staff. Had table service during the day, even for just drinks.
T. E.
A nice cost pub, with decent grub. Looked after a big group of us really well especially as we were in the way and refreshed. Cheers!
J. S.
Really great pulled beef
A. N.
Food ok, but not at the price. You don't have to go far to find better value for your money. That said, it's a comfortable boozer.

Nice and elegant spot, with very good food (the Sunday roast is really good), good selection of beers (I recommend the pale Ale).
S. K.

Great espresso martini!!

Get a Scotch egg, black pudding and a runny yolk with a crisp exterior. The pinotage from the running duck vineyard in South Africa is great too.
H. B.
Absolutely excellent pub in a hidden gem location. Superb menu and service.
