Reviews of The Nell Gwynne Tavern
J. C.
Great little pub hidden down a small side street near to The Adelphi Theatre. They have a great selection of beers and spirits and staff are nice and friendly too. £3 for a pint of Tribute amazing!!
J. G.
Lovely hidden historic London pub just off The Strand. Beer £3.70 per pint.
S. a. N. S.
Old fashioned London pub. Very small inside and few tables, mostly high stools and a shelf around the outside. Full when we went in, 2 married women on a day out, then a huge crowd of blokes and 2 women came in and just kept coming in. We were pleased to leave them to it. But not very clever to choose the smallest possible place for such a large gathering! 😭
G. M.
Cozy, warm and friendly. In a classic London alley, a usual Victorian style pub. Great choice of crisps, especially if you are a fan of Irish classics.
N. B.
First time here the other night. Great little pub with a friendly vibe. Was pleasantly surprised to pay only £9 for two pints of Tribute and a packet of crisps.
C. S.
Friendly staff, lovely Guinness and beautiful pub
S. S.
I love dive bars, and this is a decent one. Trickle of customers keep bartenders busy in-between hordes of theater goers. Beer selection could use some attention, perhaps another handle or two. Everything else was good, don't change a thing.
H. H.
It is a lovely little pub, really good atmosphere. We used to come here and play tunes on the jukebox. Unfortunately, on my last visit the jukebox wasn't operational. Bring back the jukebox!!!
A. R.
Love this place.
It's a bit of a hidden gem tucked away off the main drag of the Strand, in a prime tourist zone but with very un-touristy prices. Under £4 for a pint is normally unheard of in Covent Garden, but it's right here. Friendly staff, cosy interior, great prices, what more can you want.
T. T.
Pub hopping for the day and came across this tiny pub while poking through the alleyway out of curiosity. One of the smallest pubs I’ve been to in London. Atmosphere was uncrowded thus restful . Sat next to the piano and imagined what it would be like having a singalong there. It’s historical connection to royalty is interesting.

The term "authentic pub" gets thrown about in London a lot, but I reckon this fits the bill. If you're looking for a warm cosy place to have a pint with a friend after work in central London, Nell Gwynne is a good choice! As busy as any pub would be, but surprisingly low on tourists. I went on a Friday at 6 and I got 2 bar seats in reasonable time. Toasty wasn't too bad either!
p. g.
Great old old pub with lots of history... I dropped a star as the surfaces you put your drinks on were super sticky... I'd guess not had a deep clean wipe in quite a while...
a. m.
Always fantastic to grab a beer in the Nell whilst in town. Beautiful old fashioned alley pub, great beers, awesome staff, always chatting and helpful- a must visit if your near the strand or charing Cross!!
I. J. (.
Lovely old pub, the real thing. Been a while since I was here and it hasn't changed thankfully
C. B.
A little tired looking but open till 10,30 pm so there's that, greeted with a smile & good service , steep steps down to a shabby toilet. Money & tlc required, tho a corner upright piano always make me smile.)
A. F.
Such a cool little pub, something that’s not always easy to find in the heart of London. Plenty of beers on offer and would be a great place for a beer on a summer day out in the alley.
Really nice, warm atmosphere
M. D.
Great boozer, cosy and central, just off The Strand.
R. J.
Lovely ambiance, nice beer, interesting barman.
G. J.
Top pub, always a good selection of beer & snacks (bring back Nik naks!) Excellent chalkboard out front. Always raises a smile.
F. D.
Great staff, lovely atmosphere, my kind of humour!
A. P.
Great hidden tucked away pub in the heart of the city.
D. P.
One of the best little pubs in London. Only a few feet from one of the busiest streets in London, you suddenly feel transported to a different time. A proper pub where you can really enjoy a beer and good company tucked away in a corner. Love it here.
A. R.
Lovely little pub in the heart of Charing Cross. Very friendly staff and the drinks are standard for the area. Lively music and atmosphere! They also have TV showing sports which is nice. Volume of the TV isn't loud which is even better!
H. B.
Ideal place we found before going to the theatre, very busy but very friendly, great atmosphere.😊
M. R.
Squirrelled away in a side alley a stone's throw from the Strand this place will give him the genuine London pub experience. Small, lively and friendly with a good range of beers it has character in abundance. Seek it out and enjoy. M
C. J.
Nice small pub. Good atmosphere. Broken juke box! 😁
M. C.
Amazing Old School British Pub....real Victorian atmosphere 😎🍻🍻🍻
K.
Traditional British pub with good selection of ales.
P. A.
Everytime we are in London we always come here, lovely quaint pub in the heart of London ❤❤
D. C.
Lovely little pub, friendly staff, great range of drinks
P. C.
Classic little London boozer in a wonderfully dark alley off The Stand. As comfortable as your favourite armchair but the beer is better.
On my most recent visit, sport on the pub TV was being watched through the open window by people outside in the alley but ignored by everyone inside. Huh?
Oh and Nell herself was on her phone outside too.
J. R.
A very cosy and friendly little pub with a couple of cask ales
T. B.
What a find ! A real old London pub. Loads of atmosphere, and very welcoming. Beer very good. And for the Irish among you, the Nell serves Tayto Crisps - a true taste of Home 😆
K. J.
Cosy atmosphere and a good selection of drinks.
J. N.
Cosy relaxed pub with friendly staff.
R. Y.
Great service, great drinks and atmosphere......nice pub for pre threatre drinks ...
R. H.
Loved this little gem of a place.
Quiet,socially distanced efficient place.
S. M.
Visited for the first time yesterday before our theatre visit. Will definitely be returning on our next ladies weekend. We felt so welcomed by the staff and so relaxed while we were there. See you soon.
J. F.
I love the pub, friendly bar staff and lovely ambience.
m. f.
Just love this pub..Staff so friendly....great beers and music on the jukebox beating out!...spent many, many happy hours there and we can't wait to return on our next trip to London...from Martin + Lucy Sydney Australia
P. S.
What a boozer!
I remember when loads of pubs were like this - friendly, well kept beer, relaxed atmosphere with a proper guvnor.
The cheese toastie was awesome as well, go and support it!
K. C.
A pub with a lot of charm.friendly barman who knew the history of the building.im glad we found this pub, which is down an alleyway.
K. f. a. d.
A small dark pub with a bit of history. Always worth a visit for a pint and a bag crisps. Drinks can be taken out to the front alley if the pub is full.
G.
Friendly staff, good Selection of beers, gin, friendly customers.🌈
M. R.
Really quaint, olde worlde side street alley pub. These are few and far between.
G. B.
Good small pub centrally located. Serves draft Tribute 👍
H. A.
Loved it. Nice atmosphere xxxx
S. S.
So much character and lovely guys serving great beer.
M. M.
Great pub, friendly staff who know their trade.well kept beer at unbelievable good prices for the centre of London.Highly recommended.
D. W.
Lovely little pub. Hidden away off the road.
R. A.
Lovely to see this place open, the only pub I come to when in london. Keep safe everyone
R. L.
Nice pint
R. T.
Good pub, very friendly staff.
C. J. G.
Small pub with friendly staff.
D. R.
A great place for a drink with a little history attached, a Victorian pub it's only small but has a great atmosphere. Not too expensive the centre of London which makes it very popular. Not too much seating inside but room outside in the narrow alley. We often come here while visiting this area, they also do toastie and pies to go with your pint.
D. E.
Cute cosy little pub. Super Friendly staff behind the bar! Took the picture cause I thought it was funny.
B. M.
Great little pub in a walk mews just off The Strand. Friendly welcome and nice drinks in an historic pub. The sense of history so strong you can almost wrap it around you.
J. G.
Great little traditional pub . Good ales and friendly staff. Worth a seek out while in London.
J.
Great service, very personable staff. Good food and a great place to relax and grab a beer.
R. J.
A great little old fashioned pub tucked back from the main road, good for a quick drink before the theatre, small so could be busy at times.
Think 'simple pint of beer in a panelled bar' no frills but it really does not need any. Mind you the cheese and ham toasties were good ;-)
J. F.
Very small but very nice pub. A typical English pub near Coven Garden. Wonderful!
C. D.
Nice quiet lunchtime on Saturday. Dark and atmospheric and a range of customers. Weirdly no tourists from abroad. Beer not cheap but by no means expensive. Very well kept. Staff friendly and helpful. Speaking as pensioners one with mobility issues the stairs to the loo are a challenge but add to the experience. Just don't drink too much before trying to get down safely.
G. B.
Lovely cold Guinness on tap here. Staff are very friendly. Steps down to the toilets are extremely steep and you need to mind your head doesn't bang off the roof when you're going down. They also sell pickled eggs which are very tasty. I went for the chilli egg which had a fair kick off it.
K. H.
This is an idyllic British pub. Staff are super friendly and there's a great selection of drinks. I was there on a Wednesday before a show and they had a piano player performing some fantastic tunes which really added to the ambience.
B. H.
Great little pub that's hidden aways. Not very big so can get quite busy but I've never had a problem finding a seat. Great selection of ales, no TV's but has a Jukebox which creates a good pub atmosphere
K. O.
Great pub, staff are extremely lovely and decent prices.
My partner got homophobically abused in this pub by a stag group of guys, but the bar staff were not aware of this at all, so i do not blame them for this.
reccommend this place and will be back.
L. L.
We love this quirky little pub tucked away off The Strand. Staff always friendly too
A. T.
Whats not to like. Super cost little pub just off Strand. Interesting dark decor. Cliquey crowd. Beer possibly.on the expensive side but atmosphere makes up for it.
Gin of the month and "guest toastie" also available.
Good selection of beers and spirits. Pretty friendly staff.
Toilets become tricky later in the evening due to steel narrow stairs and lack of room to maneuver..
P. P.
A proper little battle cruiser...many things get sunk here, mainly pints, really friendly :)
P. L.
Gem of a pub down some alleyway near The Strand. Quite cosy inside so you'll probably have to stand outside in the alley. Good selection of drinks and the price wasnt too bad given that its centre of London. Would have given it 5 stars but found it to be quite smokey outside from all the smokers - suppose this isn't the pubs fault though. I would certainly go back if out and about in the area.
D. P.
Authentic Place in the Strand.
It has identity and flavour. Illumination is limited but it makes a good match to decoration. The pub goers are locals and office workers rather than tourists. It has a reasonable selection of ales plus more comercial brands also available.
Good place to enjoy London.
M. S.
Very decent pub considering it is in prominent tourist territory. Like it, friendly staff and generally a great after work atmosphere. Ideally, I'd like to see more than the two ales available but given the size of the operation I can't complain. Usually a port of call when I'm in this neck of the woods.
J. C.
Great little place to have a quick drink
W. L.
Amazing small traditional pub with a perfect atmosphere and few tourists. Perfect drinking / hidey hole to make you feel alive and remind you why you live in London. Love it here - we will be back.
S. C.
I should give it a 1-star rating as I want people to stay well away from one of my favourite pubs of all time! the nell is a proper pub, with friendly staff. They've upped their selection of drinks in the last year or two, and upgraded the bathrooms. All-in-all, an unrivalled watering hole in this part of the city.
P. H.
This is a little gem of a pub especially on a hot day. The staff are friendly and attentive.
L. M.
Small but nice pub, that isn't that crowded by tourists. Good selection on beers and even better one on spirits like gin. Next time I'm in the city I'll go there again.
R. W.
Decent boozer this. Hidden away which is perfect to avoid the pre theatre crowd. Originally 18th C it’s very, very small. Be careful leaving the gents if you are tall. You have been warned.
Service wasn’t that great but I like the building.
H. S.
Beautiful historical pub, hidden in an alley, as it should be.
T. A. M. C. a. G.
Great little pub tucked away in the capital, Graham was a very chatty barman.
M. A.
So cute! Staff and beer are great. Get your bum inside and have a drink.
S. B.
Fantastic atmospheric little pub full of history. It's tucked away in an alley just off of the Strand and we'd highly recommend you drop by to experience it's great ales, warm and friendly staff and to take time to escape the crowds.
K. S.
We love the Nell. It's a hidden gem we found years ago when we first travelled to London. Great pub atmosphere. We really enjoy it -.our favorite London pub. Kathy & Jerry from Philly.
I. B.
Small, nice pub. Very small bathroom downstairs.
C. C.
It used to be a best kept secret years ago, but now the secret is well and truly out! Still a great little boozer, that features the most dangerous toilet in London ( you will hit your head coming up the stairs) ;-)
J. C.
The quaintest pub I've ever visited
P. P.
Although small with limited seating there is a friendly atmosphere in the pub and they serve a decent ale. Being sandwiched between two theatres results in a busy period before the shows start.
D. R.
Always popular, definitely worth it if that part of town. Quaint, cozy and quite unique. All that means is it’s small, often with punters spilling out into the lane outside. Good choice of beers including craft. Accessibility is a problem. Toilets are on a different floor with a deadly set of stairs in between.
E. I.
Gorgeous and very traditional English pub with excellent service, delicious cocktails and a great variety of tap beers. Love the classic decoration.
C.
Tiny traditional pub gets very busy at night. No Bacardi! Not good for people with difficulties getting around as very steep narrow stairs to toilet. Lots of atmosphere though.
R. C.
Amazing pub, hidden away up a side street so attracts a friendly genuine crowd, cheap drinks, friendly staff, like a local in the middle of the city.
A. N.
I'm here for new years with my brother. The staff is very friendly, polite, and, humorus. They also have a very tasteful choice of music my opinion alot of classics you can hum to with your buds.
D. M.
A tiny pub down a side street might not be to everyone's taste, but this is a gem of a place.
Quite dark inside, but with well kept ales and friendly staff. Basic bar snacks are available.
I. R.
Great pub, BUT do be aware that the stairs to the toilets are narrow and very steep so might be dangerous for some. Otherwise a great little old pub that's always busy.
I. M.
Wonderful historic pub, up a little walkway off the Strand. Really feels like stepping back in time.
E. C.
A well worth walk away from the craziness of Covent Garden you'll find this lovely pub tucked away in a Dickensian alleyway. With a homage to the almost forgotten music hall stars of the early 1900s you can enjoy great beers on tap in a friendly, tiny nugget of living Victoriana.
S. D.
This is my mate Dave's new favourite pub, it's down a little alleyway and is a nice quaint old-style pub with a great jukebox, I have to say my pint of ale was not that good, it could be down to personal taste but I ended up switching to lager.
K. B.
One of the better pubs in the area. It is rather small and pokey but that adds to the charm. From time to time you might bump into some of the cast and crew from the adjacent theatres.
S. S.
Truly magical, tiny and historical pub, that really is like stepping back into the 18th century. It's hidden location down a side alley and literally 10 steps from one of the busiest streets in the West End, just adds to the charm. Built on the site of the Old Bull Inn, it has only been a few years since the Nell Gwynne was saved from the developers thanks to a long-running campaign. Here's hoping it's here to stay for another century.
n. m.
I do like this pub - which has nothing to do with the historical Nell Gwynne but is a lovely Victorian alleyway pub - but there are problems with the staff. Not the lovely Irish woman or a couple of others. Not even the bearded stand-up comic who needs to be cooler than cool. But don't you hate those bar staff who can't hide the fact they don't want to be there and can't even look you in the eye for a second when they give you your change? I do because it makes me feel like some kind of conveyor belt thing. SHouldn't there be some kind of test for any kind of sales staff that they know how to interact with customers? (This woman looks SO angry as she's sorting out glasses.) Hence this low rating cos that happened today.
B. W.
Great little hidden pub, drooling in history of the famous Nell Gwynne. Great landlords, great beer and a great jukebox.
N. D.
Proper old fashioned pub with good selection of local ales and great service every time. A dying breed.... But wonderful
G. S.
As ever....place is a favourite to take tourists. Why? Because it ticks all authenticity boxes. Small, sumptuous but needs to display circa date.
People are interested.
R. T.
Traditional British pub. Good selection of beer and odd characters just off the strand. Standing room only normally and overspill into the alley
J. B.
Best place around the Strand. A hidden gem with authentic feel and heavy on the regulars. Cask Marque certified, so cask ales served there are top notch.
A. T.
Great service and staff. Proper little London boozer. Toasted sarnies , good pork pie to eat. My choice when visiting London.
D. J.
My favourite pub in London! Down a dark alley and a proper pub with good beer and a jukebox.
Stairs to the toilet a bit testing after a few ales mind.
J. E.
Cosy pub in the laneway next to the Adelphi Theatre. Space outside is quiet and off the main street to enjoy a drink in the fresh air; inside is a great little space to enjoy a pint or two!
M. G.
Very cozy little pub for a pint or two.
J. G.
A lot cheaper than most pubs in London. Very friendly and quick staff. Really enjoyed it.
P. D.
Excellent little pub hidden away in the lanes of the back of strand, excellent toasted chees and ham sandwich with a pint £10
J. D.
A cracking little hidden gem. A proper pub not a bar with a great jukebox. Decent prices too for central London. £3.65 for a Guinness.
D. T.
Tiny, just off The Strand on a little alleyway. More atmosphere than size suggests. Lovely staff and variety of customers. Another place to enjoy!
T. D.
Small, quaint & has character
S. D.
Lovely little pub. Visited a few times. However on last visit staff totally disinterested in serving or indeed making any attempt to converse. Shame really.
M. M.
We loved this Inn. It's a must. Great atmosphere. Very warm welcome. Delicious wine. Add it to you to do list now.
E. T.

Tiny pub, great atmosphere, nice pint, great staff, watch your head when you go to the toilet the stairs can be tricky.
B. C.
Lively, cosy great background music and good beer.
J. L.
We found this gem quite by accident and I must say it will always remind me of the parts of London everyone should see, not the touristy areas but where the true Londoners are. Well done.
P. H.
Small, quaint and amazing little pub. Great selection of beers, off the beating track in a busy area
K. G.
Good beer and friendly service, can get very full which can make it nice and lively but means you end ul spilling out on to the alleyway

F. L.
Nice and cozy little pub! Very traditional and a pint of ale was 4.10! 😁
J. H.
Nice little pub down an alleyway (which always scores extra points with me), very handy for a pre-theatre drink if you're going to one of the theatres on the Strand.
J.
Went in there for a drink with a friend after delving into the history of Nell Gwynn. The place was cosy and it was like stepping back in time for a few hours. Really cool!
A. H.
Love this pub - small, cosy and ever so slightly bonkers. Watch out for low ceiling on way to the loo if u r over 6ft
F. B.
Very good ancient pub hidden off the Strand with a ood selection of real ale. You'll have to be keen to find it though!
