We went for Sunday lunch. There was a choice of local ales which were very well kept. The landlord was very friendly and his presence filled the place. Quiet music in the background but the general ambience was convivial conversation. The food was excellent and the staff helpful and efficient. We shall be going again.

It was very busy pre football match but we were accommodated quickly with our 2 grandchildren and though we had to wait some time for our meals, we all really enjoyed them - my husband particularly enjoyed the lamb hotpot!

Best burger and wedges I've had in forever. Ate there 2 weeks ago and as well as the local being very warm and inviting, the women who served me was welcoming, lively and simply excellent with all the customers. Really great energy about her. Service was quick and I got to meet the chef who comes across as a chick who's on a mission to make her customers happy... and she did just that :) 11 out of 10 for me... and I'm still dreaming of that burger.

Went here on Saturday night for a casual get together with family and friendship for our Anniversary. Was absolutely overwhelmed by the attentiveness from the staff. There was always one member of the bar staff not too far away to get drinks and food. The staff were very friendly and really did make our evening a great time. Thank you Portland Arms

My wife and I found this lovely pub for a drink and a snack after a long and pleasant walk from Beckenham via South Norwood Country Park. The landlord and all of the staff were excellent and very friendly. I chose the Portland Ale which was recommended by the landlord and it was fantastic. My wife had a glass of recommended red wine and she said it too was delicious. We also had a small snack which we both really enjoyed. I highly recommend this pub. 10 out of 10 for everything. We will definitely be returning.

Visited for a 40th birthday, the atmosphere is fantastic and extremely good customer service. The food is very tasty but my favourite part of the Sunday roast has to be the cauliflower cheese, oh my god it is out of this world! I can't recommend this pub enough 10/10.

Went here to watch the Euro final. Great atmosphere for the event. Everyone cheerful and lively, no aggro. I can't believe how quickly all the food and drink came despite how busy they were. The staff were working super hard. I've never witnessed such a smooth operation. Well done guys!

Never have I been to a bar that exceeds expectations this well. The food is incredible, bursting with flavour. The drinks are standard (with an amazing gin list that we couldn't get through in a single night). Only downside is the price. For artisan food it makes sense, but £4.90 for a Guinness is a lot!!!

Brilliant pub with great food, good drinks, lovely people and now mince pies! The team have done a great job setting up for social distancing and we’ve enjoyed delicious meals indoors and in the garden there this year, as well as a few takeaways. Everything’s very clearly set up and signposted so we feel safe whenever we visit. And they couldn’t be more friendly. We’re very lucky to have the Portland on our doorstep.

Went for a drink/small bite to eat with my family and really impressed. Beautiful large beer garden. Top choice of beers and for my veggie/vegan family good choices for them too. Staff were brilliant and they’ve adapted well to covid (hope this statement dates badly if you’re reading this years later) with one way systems/smartphone table service etc. Overall the vibe is great and hope to come back soon.

Loved this place when first went there at end of first lockdown. Thought it was a bit spenny for that part of South norwood. Was disappointed to go again on a Friday night and realise the cocktails had been watered down and soft drinks being given in a short glass... lovely local pub but needs to maintain standards in order to keep my customer especially since coming in with the high prices.

Me, my wife and baby daughter only moved into the area at the start of lockdown and had been longingly waiting for the Portland arms to reopen so we could finally enjoy a pint and some food and I must say we were not disappointed. As a local pub they tick all the boxes, great drink selection, great food menu (lots of vegan options which is great for us), and most importantly nowadays, they have nailed making customers feel safe, secure and comfortable. The whole venue is clean, there are plenty of sanitiser bottle etc and the tables are all well spaced out and the best thing is that it hasn’t lost anything. It is obviously still a very well loved community pub with everything you might want (tv’s playing sport that aren’t in your face) run and staffed by locals. A shout out to the management that have made us feel so welcome too.

I first went here for Sunday lunch with a group of friends. The first thing I noticed was how lovely the staff were. Very welcoming, friendly and efficient. The food choice was good, including a couple of vegetarian options. The Sunday lunch was very tasty, good vegetable selection (not your standard peas and carrots). Visited again on a Friday lunch time and had another enjoyable experience. Would recommend to anyone who hasn't been, good staff, lovely food and nice beer garden.

Popped in with friends to cure a hang over. Very glad we did. Very friendly staff who like a laugh and have a good sense of humour. A great choice of drinks. A bright, fresh and fun interior with a good atmosphere. We had 4 small plates of food which were all very good especially the calamari. Thick and juicy and cooked to perfection. A nice amount of people in there for a wednesday afternoon. Nice music from the 90's playing inside and out to the back garden. Can see this being my new hang out. Seems like the perfect place to watch football and rugby. We be returning very soon.

Whether I go for a sit-down meal in a big group, a quiet drink in the afternoon or watching the football on match-day, I always have a great time in the Portland Arms. All the staff are friendly and attentive and I feel comfortable going in on my own - which I don’t feel in many pubs! The menu overall is really good but any of the burgers are a great choice.

Great food! We live up the road and have meant to visit before now but hey it's the bank holiday and a Sunday , so perfect excuses! Fairly empty indoirs when we arrived as it was sunny and most people were outside. Good range of bottled beers and the house white was nice. Had a beef roast & my partner tried the jerk burger. Both good sized portions, tasty and excellent value. Staff were really friendly and made a point of chatting to us. Only criticism would be that it's a shame the outside area wasn't bigger. However, its light and airy inside with large doors so you do not feel closed in. Will definitely be back and thanks for giving us a very pleasant local!

Wow. Have never been inside this pub. Good background music. Got 4 plates of starters and they were all yummy and we even had a drink made up by the bar tender which was so different to what I usually have. Took my old dear to here last Sunday for a roast. Wasn't expecting much as its in South Norwood, checked others reviews and found that it has a lot of positive feedback... so I decided to pay them a visit. All I can say is, it is by far the best pub in South Norwood! I would maybe even go as far as saying it is possibly one of the best pubs I've been to in South London. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. The roast beef was honestly one of the best roasts I've ever had and the ambience and atmosphere of the pub itself it top notch. It's also got a lovely little beer garden with an outside TV, sounding and lighting. Very impressive. My only feedback or criticism is that the food was so good, there just wasn't enough of it! Plenty of beef, but could of done with more roast potatoes lol. Lastly, the Irish chap who I believe is the manager is a lovely bloke and came over, was very chatty etc. Just what you want in the boozer! I have recommended to my friends, we'll be back next Sunday! If you're considering paying them a visit, do it! 10/10!!!

The burgers are pretty special, the beer is well looked-after, and there's always a warm welcome from the staff. In comparison to other pubs in the area, it's a shining star. My only gripe is the slightly overwhelming lighting, and the always-on TVs. No problem at all with the latter for big events, but the silent presence of Sky Sports News of an evening prevents the pub from being the cosy sanctuary I'd love it to be.

Nice pub, does good beer and decent food. Has a nice, small garden. Very dog and family friendly and plenty of space inside. Runs a loyalty scheme. I think it's run by the same people that do The Great North Wood in West Norwood but its a much more friendly and less pompous and try-hard hip than the GNW.

Great atmosphere and nice decor. They have a baby cafe every Tuesday morning and show sports at other times too. Drinks are reasonably priced and you can get a nice selection of pub grub food. Staff are super friendly too.

This is a great pub. Excellent food, beer and staff. We have eaten here a number of times and have always had a great experience. In fact, this saturday Antonio took me to oneside to apologise for overcharging us over a month ago (I was not aware of this at all) and refunded the difference! We need more pubs like this - friendly, honest and welcoming. Oh, and did I say the good and beer are excellent too.

Nice place however music on Fridays is too loud. It could be a bit lower and still people who want to dance would hear it well. I visited my friends there and we could not have normal conversation. I lost my voice from shouting to them and to bartender as even staff could not hear what people.are saying. I would say avoid over the weekends if you want to have conversation.
