Reviews of The Prince of Wales
D. T.
A special picturesque pub tucked away in Kennington. A delicious pub with good beer both on cask and keg. A fine menu with wonderful aromas to tickle the taste buds. A fine place to visit but get here early, others have heard!
M.
Great find. Small but characterful local tucked away a short walk from the main roads. Good real ale and very popular for food.
M.
Hidden gem. New owners since 2019 and you know it. Great beer, great food, lovely surroundings. Full of character and everything you want from a London pub, just don’t tell everyone. Best pub in Kennington by a mile.
A. W.
Easily the best Sunday roast in london. Friendly staff & cost atmosphere. Good vegan choices too!
P. L. R.
A little haven from the non stop life going on in Elephant and Castle. Small quiet pub in a well-heeled square, with good food and real ales. Not totally convinced by the life drawings on the walls, but the other art stands the place out from many pubs. You'll need a reservation if you're hoping to eat though.
D. J.
Lovely pub off the beaten track on Cleaver square. Good food, good Shepherd Neame ales and a good choice of music. Good service too so very impressed.
D. R.
Good range of beers and ales in a smart traditional pub. Great location in a small quiet neighborhood. Plenty of good quality real ales, many from Kent. Also decent British pub food. Worth a quiet afternoon or evening with friends, a nice crowd without any pretensions.
I. P.
One of the best pubs in London. Great beer, nice crowd and good food. It's a hidden gem.
J. I.
Excellent food. Good selection of beers. Friendly, attentive staff. Such a gem.
G.
Love this pub for its idyllic setting on Cleaver Square. The draught beer offering is somewhat limited: had the last Whitstable ale before they ran out and resorted to the Sheperd Neame Master Brew - drinkable, but only just.
Friendly, quiet (no canned music), frequented by locals and off the tourist track. The free WiFi wasn't accessible.
L. K. R.
This is one of the most beautiful and unique pubs in London let alone Kennington.
With its great food and drink and printing covered wall and its lovely country pub feel. I can highly recommend this great pub for a quick pint after work or a meal with the family!
Fantastic pub!

❤️ Charming pub located on a beautiful Georgian square in south London. A bit off the the beaten track this one but only five minutes walk from Kennington tube and what a location, who wouldn’t want to live near to this cosy boozer.
.
There are several pubs all within a five minute walk from here and would recommend this cracking pub as part of a Kennington crawl.

Sunday roast was great. Just a beautiful pub. Great service
A. M.
Great to see the PoW open again and for the boules set to be back in use. I salute the friendly staff for keeping up the flow of drinks, and keeping things socially distanced. Also still one of the best locations for a pub on London, in my opinion: Cleaver Square is lovely and a great footprint for Georgian architecture.
T. O.
Even though fully booked for Sunday lunches still found space for a quick drink for me
S. V.
When you wanna a cozy please, people who pamper you and high quality food! Here it is ! I really recommend it!🤙
R. A.
Lovely. Only if is £17 for a pint and half and a glass of wine of a back street in Oval is a bit steep. Apart from that, lovely place and staff
A.
what a delightful pub! Such a lovely stop off point. Elegant and charming place, nice and clean.
S. D.
A really nice small and cozy local bar. So traditional it's like stepping into a time machine an d arriving in a quintessential ale house.
J. C. (. a. J.
Good Shepherd Neame pub in a lovely Georgian square. To all intents and purposes, the biggest beer garden in London probably. The square also has the perfect surface for a game of petanque. Three cask ales available when I visited.
F. B.
Up there with the best pubs I've visited in 2020. Its location is spot on - tucked away at the corner of the park off the main road. A real agreeable feel to the place where you feel right at home. Food is banging, drinks are plenty. Keep up the good work.
S. B.
Lovely little pub. Very busy, nice and friendly staff. I will come back to try their food next.
T. P.
The Fish Friday deal (two haddock and chips for £15) is a steal. Lovely food, reasonably priced beer and friendly staff. Lots of quirky artwork adorns the pub.
M. T.
Very small pub. Always busy. Lots of people from outside area drink here. Currently selling takeaway beers and food as well as seated. Limited outdoor seating. Staff friendly and efficient. Music is retro pop.
C. C.
What a find! Great location, great food. First time at this pub, and it is situated in such a pretty square. Welcoming staff, an excellent menu and we all enjoyed a top Sunday roast - huge crispy Yorkshires, perfectly cooked vegetables, and delicious meat. Very good value. Will definitely be back.
S.
Nice enough little pub. Has boule balls to rent if you want to play in the square
J. M.
Such a great pub, definitely recommend sitting in the square with your beers on a nice evening
D. S.
Bit of a squeeze to get a seat outside but managed to get on the end of a table. Limited choice of beer but the Neckoil is always good.
O. O.
I visit this gorgeous pub once a year after carol singing in the square. Always a friendly bunch running the bar, always busy, and has a vibrant and cosy atmosphere.
A really lovely pub. What a wonderful to thing have in this area.
E. V.
Great food, good service, great setting in a nice square off the main road.
B. R.
Loved the relaxed but safe (covid) vibe. Food good and staff extremely helpful, chatty and busy. Great night
A. H.
Excellent! I was searching for a proper, quiet pub while out for a lunchtime walk and the Prince Of Wales ticked every box. A friendly welcome, a good pint and a nice setting made for an enjoyable stop-over. Food looked good from where I sat as well.
M. G.
What a great little pub! It's right on the square, so you can go outside for a few drinks of the weather is nice. The Chardonnay was surprisingly good for pub wine, which I normally find impossible to drink. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
M. V.
It looks lovely from the outside, not just the pub, but the artwork covering the walls, etc. I hope it reopens once lookdown is over
K. W.
Amazing Food fab relaxing evenings good prices will visit again and again
R. B.
Cute little pub, rarer and rarer in London. Quite small but plenty of space outside. Staff were fantastic, courteous and polite. Small selection of ales. Star attraction is the boules pit of Cleaver Square next to it. Definitely one for a summer pint.
M. G.
A gorgeous pub; one of my favourites in London. The staff are always friendly and the food is fresh and delicious. This is a cosy escape pub in winter and a wonderful summer pub, complete with boules for a pétanque and pint session. Highly recommended.
N. R. (.
Lovely little hidden gem. I had a burger and chips, and it was very good quality/well presented. It was quiet when we were there, though that was a Monday. Nice interior, friendly service.
G. C.
Feels like a country pub in the city of London. Locals were very friendly with tales of yore abound. Lots of Gins on hand and ales to suit. well worth the pop in if you can.
R. S.
Lovely little Shepherd Neame pub in the corner of a nice Georgian square in Kennington. It is very small though, seats about 20 I would think so perhaps not the best place for large groups. Convenient after a match at the Oval.
J. M.
Came here for Xmas lunch with some friends and the food was superb.
Clearly a lot of thought and effort has gone into the decor and they've successfully created a typically English, yet so hard to emulate, cosy pub vibe. Good work!
P. J.
Lovely old pub with a square out the front for playing bocce.
S. C.
Lovely old pub in a beautiful square. Tasteful flavours on tap. Ran by the same company as the excellent Mayflower in Rotherhithe.
D. H.
Typical pub situated in Kennington SE11. Close to the Oval.
E. A.
Nice location, beautiful place, good choice of drinks, some of the best dessert I had in London for sometime (white chocolate cheesecake ) and above all the nicest smilest service! P.S. some of the food I had here was really good but forgot to rate...
M. L.
Classic pub serving strong choice of draught Asian lager. Good food available, although not served all day. Recommend the outside area on a sunny day as it is a great sun trap and is warm even on a winters day!
G. P.
Small but lovely traditional pub tucked away in the corner of Cleaver Square. Great atmosphere, especially when sun is out and everybody spills out into the square. Basic but decent selection of beer and food.
C. P.
Last went in the magical pre-covid time (remember when Brexit was a big deal, what a time) and was worried about the renovation. However, it's actually better than it used to be; almost uniquely with pub developments the update was an improvement.
S. M.
An off the beaten path pub that's certainly worth the diversion, the Prince of Wales always has people but always space as well to make for a pub with atmosphere that you can actually sit in. Summertime attracts boules lovers, as you can rent the equipment for a pound (plus a refundable deposit of £10) and play in the adjoining sandy square. 4 stars as the kitchen is often not serving.
S. M.
Great takeaway service and very quick. Lovely atmosphere on the square and the staff were friendly.
J. H.
Very pleasant setting for this Shepherd Neame pub in Cleaver Square. We sat out with our pints (served in plastic glasses) on one of the benches in the square, watching people play petanque on a late spring / early summer evening. I very rarely venture South of the river, and on previous visits I've generally failed to find nice old pubs that I've really liked - but this place is a definite exception to that rule. Perhaps a bit more plain on the interior, but it does have some rather attractive windows and a few other original features.
a. d.
Dan's the man wonderful welcome food was enjoyed by all and the service and friendly conversation was lovely and welcoming just like being back home in Ireland. Possibly the friendliest pub in london
D. A.
This gem of a pub is hidden in the corner of the fabulous Cleaver Square where you can play petanque if the weather is good. The POW lets you borrow a petanque set for a small deposit which is fantastic in summer. The pub is fairly small but has a lovely local feel to it. This is definitely one of the best pubs in the area.
S. B.
Tiny local pub in a lovely quiet square with plenty of atmosphere. The artwork on the walls might be connected to it being round the corner from the London Art School.
R. H.
Friendly, positive staff happy to let you try a few ales before you buy.
Quite a reasonable menu it seems and roasts on Sunday: gotta try that.
G. A.
Under new management as of today, Black Dog Brewery Company took over, owner Paul Graham of Mayflower fame and the new manager Luke Morrissey, looks likely to re-open this Thursday following a refit.
r. m.
Great shepherds nenme pub. Very well kept beer. In the summer you can rent French boules. Go there during the kennington fete, trust me!
J. D.
Proper little old fashioned pub, ticked away in the corner of a quiet square in Kennington. I've only ever popped in for a quick afternoon pint but it's always a pleasure to be there
T. H.
Petanque or boules, that's the question. Great little pub on cleaver square. Good selection of ales, all well kept. Friendly staff and a nice haven of calm in the middle of kennington.
J. D.
Lovely pub in a beautiful square. They could do with a more varied selection of ales but still a great choice if you're in Kennington.
M. D.
Always enjoy the Prince of Wales in terms of beer and food. Would have been nicer today if they hadn't closed at 4pm
G. C.
Great pub with cozy atmosphere. Good food platters and atmosphere!
O. O.
Delightfully cosy pub with good beer. Always had a great atmosphere when I've popped in. It is probably a good thing I don't have this pub on my doorstep....
B. P.
We went to the Prince of Wales for lunch, following a fascinating tour of The Oval Cricket Ground nearby, it was just a little tough to find the way in, as the sat nav took us up to a barrier, but once we had quickly worked out the right way in, everything went swimmingly, the people were delightful, the food was to an exceptional standard, parking was right outside, prices were very reasonable, drink was first class, and we would recommend the Prince of Wales pub in Kennington to one and all.
T. W.
Good beer selection and atmosphere. There a nice blend of people of different ages and backgrounds in this pub.
G. S.
Perfect lunch spot on a rainy afternoon. Great bar staff. Comfortable and cozy dining area.
S. O.
A good example of a neighborhood local, owned by shepherd neame, but not always have full range on, food ok. Good to see these places still open, so many have closed; Support Your Local!
P. J.
Great beer and ale selection, and great fresh and tasty food. Can't wait to go back again.
B.
Small friendly pub
A. S.
Great pub to go to after cricket at the Oval. Can be rather crowded but plenty of room outside.
T. G.
Fantastic little pub in a quiet corner of Kennington, great for a cosy pint in the winter, but equally good in the summer when you can drink in Cleaver Square outside.
s. f.
Nice pub, great location 👍
S. H.
Very friendly atmosphere in pleasant surroundings in one corner of a residential square.
The square has a petanque court in the middle and lots of bench seating.
J. H.
Please stay away.....
It is an awsome place that we love to frequent on Sunny summer afternoons to lazy away the troublesome work issues....
Friendly, relaxed and great locals..... all variants of alcohol are excellent....and the food is pretty good too.
So being truly selfish.....go away....find somewhere else...... you won't like this place.....
K. A.
