Reviews of The Princess Of Wales
M. C.
Visiting from San Diego, Ca. Customer service was ok
Food was delicious
Prices very reasonable
Fish a little too salty and oily
Brisket a little too sweet for my liking
Overall a must try if you’re visiting London :)
P. P.
Most friendly staff of all pubs in London I have visited (and that number is skyrocket high). Special shout out to barman Tom, who made this an unforgettable experience for us. Thanks and cheers with a half pint of Camden Hells 😉
A. M.
Nice friendly pub, and not too officious when it comes to chucking out time! A good spot to pause before travelling.
J. J.
Very friendly pub, good selection. Great bar man from up north, its the little things that give a place character. Gets very busy past 7.
B. A.
Friendly, pleasant atmosphere and they do a tasty veggie burger. Plus, they have doom bar AND London Pride
B. B.
Its tiny, hardly any seating ! But really lovely. I think theres another floor, but it was taped off when we were there so we squeezed into the ground floor for a few pints and had a great time. Prices are good too. Food wasnt being served, so cant comment on that. Staff were great. I'd go back again for sure.
M. F.
Handy pub if you're waiting for a train from Charing Cross. Side entrance to the station is just opposite. Decent selection of beers
D. P.
Lovely place, lovely team. Especially our waitress. Great spot to meet friends for dinner. Really convenient location and right now with Christmas lights it’s a little spot of Christmas spirit
E. V.
Lovely Pub tucked near by station. Very peaceful for a nice cold pint and some munchies. Friendly staff as well!
D. A.
Lovely atmosphere, great weekend and good tunes! I truly Enjoyed it! I'll definitely be back!
F. J.
We had good service. The barman on Sunday afternoon engaged with us and was entertaining.
A. M.
Great place to dine or just enjoy a drink. Had the best shepherd's pie I've had so far. Service is great, ambiance, decoration... Everything to make yourself comfortable and enjoy your time.
J. L.
The fish and chips are incredible! And everything else my group ordered looked delicious, too. We ate upstairs where it was a lot quieter. Two different atmospheres between upstairs and downstairs to fit your liking. Right down the street from the embankment station for the underground!
J. R.
We've been in London 3 days and have already had dinner here twice. Great place to dine. Food and service was great on both visits. You want a good dinner and are in the area give this place a try, you wont be disappointed
I. D.
Popped in here passing through.
Only had the one drink but staff good, shows football. Other people's plates of food looked good.
F. K. (. M.
Wonderful place. Great food; tasty and fantastic portion sizes. Lovely customer service. An absolutely must if you're peckish, slightly hungry or simply starving anywhere between #embankment, #charringcross, #trafalgarsquare or #coventgarden. Highly recommended 👍🏿 👍🏿 👍🏿
N. B.
Lovely place, reasonably priced ales and a must have if you fancy a pint
f.
Lovely staff, great selection of beers and spirits, suck tunes. That northern bartender is a lad
S. B.
Really nice traditional pub. Great location and great selection of beer.
p. w.
Great selection of drinks, very friendly staff and competitive prices. Recommend
B. L.
A typical English pub, no frills lovely beer and friendly staff
a. c.
Good little pub, that's always worth a visit, and not just because your waiting for a train.
A. H.
Very nice little hidden gem on the way or from Embankment.. Great atmosphere, good food and friendly staff
S. C.
Spent a couple of great hours dancing in here after the show, top service.
R. J.
Had 2 really good nights there. Great entertainment
K. K.
A great dinner venue, and great value too.
c. w.
Best food I had in London, HANDS DOWN. Also the house cider was the best cider I had in England. Make sure you book ahead as this place is get busy, fast!
A. A.
I was not aware of this place at first but stumbled upon The Princess Of Wales while walking past , I thought then in that moment I must pop in and atleast pay homage to Princess Dianas memory , I found here to be welcoming , stylish and soon realised many proffesionals meet up in here on their lunch breaks , I also found the only place to sit was in the comfort section at the far end at the time and soon kindly gave up my place to a family who had just come in so they could sit in that section around the table , I quite enjoyed this bar restraunt its a nice place to stop by , well priced and they serve some lovely food , had there been a little more room I would of stayed longer but still it was a pleasure to be here and even stand at the bar and you can get to here from Charing cross tube station very easy its only a short walk , I recomend anybody to come here for a nice peacefull drink or lunch away from the buisy mayhem or to simply get your bearings as London can be quite overwhelming at times 🙂
L. M.
A lovley traditional London pub with a great atmosphere.
K. A.
Great little lokal British pub. 2 min Walk from Embankment tube station. They have a good selection of British pies, burgers and beer. Worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood
M. L.
i had a proper pub time in friday afternoon. prices were more than fair, service too!
J. R.
Food was absolutely fantastic, I got the fish and chips and my friends got the chicken burger thoroughly enjoyed my time here. The atmosphere was really nice and the staff where really helpful and friendly.
T. C.
Great place to meet up with friends not seen in a long time. Good food, thoroughly enjoyed,
J. l.
Great little pub. Friendly staff. Great service.
K. E.
A nice little pub but worth checking in advance if you're looking for food. We arrived at 21:00 hoping for a post theatre bite and the kitchen was already closed.
T. O.
Friendly pub. Probably gets busy at times being where it is but was great for a swift pint after work!
J. B.
Avoid bartender Tuder at all costs. Terribly strange bloke.
A. C.
Perfect visit! Staff very friendly, helpful and informative. Dogs allowed so perfect for our pooch. Water was offered and attention given to pooch so extra bonus for that. Food delicious.
r. a.
great food .and wonderful service from the cheerful girl upstairs
L. S.
Nice pub next to railway station... Handy for quick drink becore train home😉🙂
E. S. A.
Good vibes - abba + golf = a good party!
J. M.
Friendly staff. table service was good and bar food was limited as items not available and it was a Saturday later afternoon.
J. H.
A very cushty pub that features portraits and painted captions upon the walls describing what business important figures through had around the site. Reading snippets about George Villiers (Whom the street is named after) and Benjamin franklin whilst enjoying a pint and a glass of wine amongst the convivial atmosphere lends a nuance not captured in chain establishments.
P. T.
Pub was nice, some of the customers are not good.
I. A.
Lovey little old English pub, very pleasant place
K. B.
Fantastic atmosphere good service and beers 🍻
J. L.
Not much space but good to pop in for a drink
B. B.
Good pub but gets crowded.
F. O.
Nice and friendly place. We just arrived in London. we were in 3: me, my husband and our son of 8 years old. we had a dinner at this restaurant. Nice food, we took fish &chips, hamburger and trio pies. Very good bier. Nice staff especially the girl who served us.
F. W.
I was surprised and pleased at how warm and friendly this little pub in the heart of the crowded tourist section by Embankment station was - we were seated immediately on a busy Saturday, up in the cozy dining room upstairs, with a beautiful window seat. Service was fast and friendly, we got their traditional holiday dinner of moist roast turkey, homemade gravy, sausages, stuffing, savory vegetables that were NOT overcooked, and some marvelous local beers brewed less than four miles away. Nice atmosphere, perfect acoustics for conversation. Recommended.
H. M.
Working our way thro the old pubs of London Town, this one just off the Strand well worth a visit for the ‘Pie shop’ above the bar. Excellent Shepherd’s Pie and we’ll be back for the Fish Pie which we missed this time.
Busy and crowded downstairs but the restaurant was a haven of quiet friendly efficiency.
A. N.
Lovely place after a walk, dog friendly and reasonably priced.
J. J.
Old famous pub... briliant
A. C.
A nice London pub a nice atmosphere worth a visit 😀
s. b.
Solid pub to watch the football, beware on pint prices!
D. B.
First stop on a little pub crawl around the Covent garden and Leicester square area
L. M.
Excellent location and choice of drinks. Very friendly staff.
M. S.
Great ambiance, cheap drinks, relaxing after a hard day's walking.
E. S.
Wow. I didn't expect that amazing food. I loved it. What a mountain of deliciousness
L. B.
A really nice pub, well located near the Charing Cross station. The lunch we had here was delicious, personally I like their Gammon Steak. The staff was really polite and helpful. Some people might find the place a bit over priced, however this is expected for such a location and service. Definitely worth it. You will be happy with the experience for sure.
D. T.
Google says "liked it", well I liked it a lot. It's a great little pub. Loads of history and great staff to look after you. Brilliant beer and lovely customers from all around the world. Made many friends here, thanks to the guys and girls behind the bar. A big thank you.
P. P.
We found a good food, a good beer and a good price.
H. J. B.
After a long day of work we were searching for a place to have some typical local food. The Princess of Wales serves great fish & chips, the three mini pies were delicious as well. All served by a friendly waiter!
J.
Great place and great beer. It's also next to a great Ramen joint.
j. b.
Nice little pub with good selection of beers and gins including hot G and T!!!
S. J. H.
Another old London pub ticked off the bucket list. On the embankment. Small but perfect little watering hole. Bar snacks are very tasty lots of them no mean portions here. Friendly place staff and customers.
S. P.
Cold day so dropped in to warm up, beer and food were fine and cosy little pub that wasn’t too over crowded. One item requested on the bar snacks menu wasn’t available (pulled pork) but otherwise all good.
B. K.
Great atmosphere. Excellent location.
P. L.
Went for lunch here on a Saturday, and almost immediately was seated. Had some nice beers and tasty pie with my partner, and in general found the ambience and service to be okay. Servings were sizable, and service was relatively quick, so we could continue our tour of the city.
Unfortunately the dining area (which is upstairs) has a separate entrance that was a bit drafty; we noticed that the table next to us was also bothered by it. Try sitting away from that door if possible.
In all, fairly cramped, but other than these minor points, enjoyed our meal.
D. T.
Nice atmosphere.. food looks abs delicious from what I saw, nicely presented. Enjoyed the footy on the many tellys lol.upstairs too, reccomend..not our 1st visit when we have been to London and certainly not the last xx thank you
D. A.
Busy pub but quieter upstairs in the restaurant when we visited on a weekday evening. Very good quality pub food, excellent service. Prices not bad for London. Highly recommended.
J. E.
Delightful pub, in a very central location. Even though it was rush hour, we were able to find a table and were served promptly. Good range of beer and wine. Friendly staff. A pleasant surprise.
J. M.
Traditional London pub, very good selection of draught beers, lots of customers. Canned music very loud and completely unnecessary. Staff turned it down a little when asked.
T.
Service on the day was fair. Had to send back meal when it arrived with an item I specifically asked not to be served. Then had to ask for ketchup and had to call again for drink... Found the meal to be well presented but not as hot as could be. Had to leave the cash with the bill as the server went missing. Friendly clean but 4 out of 10.
A. G.
Quick service, good pintage.
D. M.
Lovely little pub great prices would definitely recommend
A. R.
Best fish n chips I've had during my stay in London. They have a pretty nice selection of gins too !
A.
This is regarding the restaurant upstairs and the staff. "Cozy" and great, in that order. My friends and I were staying at the Royal Horseguards and found the place while wandering the first evening. We were able to get in by the skin of our teeth the next night when a group bailed on their reservation. the upstairs dining area had an "afterthought" feel to it with the floor plan as it needed to be in order to fit, but that added to our appreciation of the place. The food was tasty, and with the four of us ordering different meals; we can say with confidence that the Nicholson's Hunter's Chicken, the Grilled Salmon, the Nicholson's fish and chips, the Nicholson's Toad in the hole, and the smoked Apple-wood Mac and Cheese were all delish.
To be frank, however, the main reason I got on to post this review was because of one employee: John Civinski (There's probably a missing accent over at least one letter there). He helped us get the table when the other group never showed, helped us navigate the menu and was extremely helpful in picking drinks to go with the meals. His suggestions were so good that two of the four of us were so taken with the beverage choices that we've been trying to track them down back here in the states.
I wish there were 1/2 stars so i could make it a 4 1/2
M. P.
We stumbled, not literally, on to this pub when we first visited London in 2007 and have made it a regular stop every year when we visit. Great pub atmosphere on the first floor, and peaceful dining on the second floor right in the heart of London. The fish and chips are the BEST. I refuse to buy fish and chips in the US and travel yearly for my fix. I just wish the Eton Mess would come back on the dessert menu . . .
M. M.
Lovely pub, always visit when we go to London
P. C.
Sad to see some poor reviews of this pub. I first came here nearly 40 years ago, still come and haven't had any bad experiences. The atmosphere is good and you can leave five minutes before you train is due to leave from Charing Cross and still catch it.
M. P.
Lovely building, decent food & reasonable prices. But on recent visit, sat upstairs for table service which was friendly, but outrageously slow. Not the waiting staff's fault, just that there was only one person for a full room. Why no wine list? Just reading out the grapes available is not really suitable when you're going to be paying up to £20 a bottle. And on asking which were European to give us a vague idea, we actually seemed to be told the only one NOT European (said sauvignon blanc, which was actually from Chile). Not the first Nicholson's pub where the staff don't know what drinks they serve. We went and paid at the till as clearly we'd be waiting all afternoon for a bill.
B.
Nice friendly Pub in Villiers St.
E. S.
OK pub, popped in for a couple of beers on the way home from work while working in the area. Friendly bar staff and quick service, even as the pub was responsible busy. Food looked OK, but didn't have any myself. Just beer.
D. O.
Nice little boozer. Tucked away near embankment Station, not cheap but does a decent pint of peroni.
J. C.
Friendly pub with an emphasis on intimacy. Comfy sofas and chairs along with good beers make this a great after work venue. There is also I dinning room for hire and they love rugby!
J. G.
Great Beer including Brewdog ,Camden Hells and MeanTime. And at a good price! I always go for the fish n chips but the sausages are oretty good too! I work nearby . Myself and friends come at least 4 times a week for a couple of years and the bar staff have always been hospitable. I would reccomend coming here and often have bought my parents for a quiet dinner up in the secret resturant upstairs! Yes it does have a Plastic license but who doesnt in central London....But it doesnt change the fact that it serves great beer and the staff treat you like family. Overall go and visit ASAP as a proper pub in central london is hard to find.
B. S. (. P.
Small venue. That said the price of food was very good, big portions and very nice.
N. L.
Great atmosphere and great beers.
N.
Very good service. Staff are friendly and drinks are great. A good place to hang out with your coworkers after hours. Good atmosphere and fairly alright music.
D. T.
It is a perfect place if you are looking for a quiet and decent meal. The atmosphere is very good, service is great, and the staffs are very attentive and knowledgeable to all the foods that they served. They also willing to answer if you have questions regarding the foods.
r. k.
Good, old style pub
L.
The fish and chips and the dinner pie with ham tasted very good, the same goes for the dessert. The waitress was nice and the restaurant is quite small but cozy.
M. B.
Nicholson's pub downstairs looks good. Upstairs the restaurant needs an update. Food was ok for the price. Staff were very keen to help.
F. T.
Food was absolutely delicious and fresh, really quick service and we got a welcome discount to top it off! Definitely recommend and would come back!! Thanks
a. m.
Great little pub. Good atmosphere. Didn't eat, but the food we saw being served looked lively
A. G.
Decent macaroni and smoked Applewood cheese with garlic bread. And good lemon tart. Just a tad more expensive than average but nice oldschool feel.
M. T.
Solid old London pub with a good variety of ales and bar snacks. Perfect for a drink before or after a theatre show!
D. W.
Delicious food, cool and cozy atmosphere, attentive service. Couldn't really ask for more from a pub.
R. F.
Good handy boozer next to Charing X. Some decent beers.
M. M.
Nice place to grab a drink before you get a train from Charing Cross. Friendly staff and good beer selection. It does get very busy as it is located close to the station.
J. H.
Would be 3 stars, being yet another Nicholson's pub, but I discovered that this place has a late license - it opens until 12:30 Thursday to Saturday. Being able to get a reasonable pint of ale at a sensible price after 11pm in London is still such a rare thing that this pub really deserves credit for it.
S. U.
Friendly pub, with a good selection of beers and cider. Watched a rugby match here. Food was tasty, recomend the sharing platters.
K. S.
Good food, excellent, very helpful staff, wide choice of beers, good location (120m from station), and very good beef pie. I recommend this place :)
N. R.
Great time loved the place
P. L.
Great spot for local dishes and super friendly staff! We went on a Sunday evening and there was plenty of space to dine on arrival.
M. B.
Right in hustle and bustle of Embankment station. Nice selection of draughts and beers
A. M.
Solid London pub. Pints under £5. They do a good pint of London Pride and the beggars outside are very polite and chatty.
M. V.
Vegan pie was tasty but why offer a vegan main meal without a vegan dessert option? Also other pie dishes came with mash the vegan didn't.
B. W.
Alright pub which is very well located, but it is quite small inside. The prices are normal. The staff was friendly and helpful. All in all a decent pub
P. J.
Traditional old pub close to embankment underground station, good for a quick pint if you are meeting someone at the station. No unique selling points.
D. G.
Good pub👍👍🍻🍺🍻
R. N.
I like this place - it's my go-to when Gordons is too full (every single day). Not much room, and the afterwork drinkers can be a bit irritating but otherwise a decent boozer
J. C.
Much quieter than the bar downstairs. Reasonable prices but they were out of some mainstay items before our 7pm dinner.
J. C.
Decent pub lunch. Went here with my family and we all enjoyed sandwiches and the nachos. Good food for the price and friendly staff.
C. S.
Excellent range of craft beers And cask ales
S.
They do a very Nice pint of Guinness
V. S.
We always come here for that one last drink after Gordons closes. It's a decent, no frills pubs, opened until midnight or so. No complaints here
S. H.
Nice pub friendly service and good staff
London prices but still cheaper than some nearby
They do food but not tried it but seems nice
Well worth a visit
It does get busy through as near charring cross station
It's a much better place for a drink than the beer house in the station which is rubbish - if you want a drink.before the train home this is a good place to go to
J. T.
Food was ok, good selection of various sausages and mash, decent burgers. Selection of ale on offer was lacking though, of the 4 there only 2 were available...
A. S.
Perhaps the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, enjoyed a great lunch with my coworkers from Montreal here.
H. P.
Nice rustic pub, but somewhat small, and gets very crowded at peak times, else good place to come for a drink after work, or with friends
P. K.
very good pub , hardworking and friendly staff , excellent traditional English beers, average prices
D. Y.
Lovely little pub. Very accessible to transport connections. They offer great accessibility for smokers.
B. R.
Happy with food and our server was fantastic. Location along busy Villiers street with pub downstairs and dinner seating upstairs.
C. M.
Cracking real ale pub with decent food near Charing Cross.
M. W.
Family friendly pub serving good selection of beers, wines and food. Lovely helpful staff
g. g.
Typical English pub with good choice of beers the restaurant is in the upper floor. Maybe it has not the same charme of the pub bud the pies are good.
M. R.
Nice pub
B. C.
Solid pub with a decent selection of beers. Definitely recommend for a quick drink with a couple of mates
I.
Mad house is its nickname &its lives up to its name but good beer
Far better than the station bar
B.
Very busy when I went on a Friday after work. Not my thing, but good if you like standing shoulder to shoulder with loud, suited men and women.
M. M.
Lovely place for a drink
J. J. S.
Excellent beer and staff
W. F.

V. W.
What a great British pub, with fantastic atmosphere! We enjoyed a good few hours in here!
J. G.
Average London boozer. Dimly light and disappointing food. Much better pubs on offer in this wonderful city.
B. H.
Nice pub good staff I haven't eaten here but it looks and smells good!
P. B.
Great pub
D. A.
Great cosy dining room, friendly and knowledgeable staff perfect beer and great selection of cask ale!!
A. D.
We went to drink a few beers. It was nice. People were friendly and the staff was nice. Not too expensive.
H. S.
I popped into this pub as I had a little bit of time to kill. Not bad prices for C London. £3.70 for a pint of Becks Vier.
B.
Good old fashioned pub. Its location means it attracts an eclectic crowd and, I think, pushes the owners to use plastic glasses a lot, which is a shame.
D. F.
Had a bit of grub and few beers. Good service. Ok for bar food.
A. S.
Strange they didnt serve 'hot' drinks, as in tea or coffee. But the food was good. Service a wee bit slow.
P. O.
Open Christmas day, friendly staff and nice atmosphere, oh and ar kid loved the mulled wine. will defo be back
J. B.

M. I. M.
The service was a bit slow but otherwise they serve a very good Sunday roast.
S. W.
Love this cosy place.I used to know an old governor called Neal O'Donnell and his wife Sue,who ran this place in the early 1980s. Yes that long ago.
K. L.
Busy and crowded downstairs but the restaurant was a haven of quiet friendly efficiency.
C. W.

God pub and I enjoyed my food a lot. Friendly service.
M. K.
I had 'Kickass' service from the new chap from Sommerset, the food was OK, nothing special but the cost wasn't extortionate so I'll give it a pass for that.
A. B.
Crowded and very lively place. Good for a quick pint!
