Reviews of The Shakespeare, Stoke Newington
D. S.
I love a proper London pub and this is definitely one of them. This Victorian gem is a little off the beaten track, but a great find.
Although many locals were gathered around the horseshoe bar, I was greeted warmly and served with a friendly smile. Screens to watch sport, a great jukebox and a lively atmosphere - far better than I anticipated.
Not the best beer selection in the world but very reasonably priced. Hope to return whenever it reopens!
N. H.
A proper Victorian London pub with a couple of screens to watch the sport. It is a tight horseshoe shaped bar with a intimate garden tour the back, (towards the toilets as you enter). Out front their are also benches that capture the setting sun.
P. M.
An intimate, relaxed N London pub where conversation rules. And a well-served pint of cask Hophead from courteous and pleasant staff.
g. f.
Good old spit n sawdust pub, with decent ales and clean loos.
P. K.
Depends what you like, I suppose, but this is one of my all time favourite pubs. Down to earth, great landlord/landlady/staff, great laid back atmosphere, you can order take out pizza from next door and eat in the pub. Just exactly what a pub should be ❤️
L. H.
Used to be the coolest pub in Stokey, now mostly filled with aging hipsters and their children. Good beer selection, overall quite a pleasant pub.
H. G.
Proper pub... so nice to have an authentic place that hasn't been turned into something generic and boring. The staff are so nice and welcoming. Great place to chill with friends and family.

What a tremendous little boozer that everyone should pop into at least once. The clientele were friendly and the atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming. Lovely horse shoe shaped bar, nice selection of beers in the fridge with the standard on tap. The staff were friendly and knew who was next to serve on a busy bar (a rarity these days) and to top it off there’s a juke box that appears to be stored with only the best music ever written. If this was my local, I’d have a plaque on the bar.

It was so good to be back after almost 8 months!
Their approach to hospitality regulations is very good re sanitising surfaces and mask usage. They have also introduced a seating policy, and you have to order at the table. It must be incredibly difficult to implement and maintain these rules, but they’re doing it with their usual good-natured vibe and the pub is still great to go to.
We only had to wait a few minutes to get our orders in, and we had regular table service throughout the evening.
They have a heated garden, and also tables out front with an awning if it rains if you so t want to sit inside.
They also let you bring pizzas in from next door (La Barca), but take the boxes with you (there’s a bin at the exit).

One of the best traditional pubs in London, a good range of well kept beer, an excellent quiz and a friendly atmosphere, just a great place to spend an evening
L. H.
Just a really great pub!!
D. S.
Clean local boozer with small beer garden. Nice gin selection, Scampi Fries and high end Frazzles. Good for hipsters and normal folk alike.

Great honest local pub with good beers. Pizza shop next door does the best 'no frills' takeaway pizza around, and you can bring in to the pub. Super friendly crowd there. Basically a cracking Stokey establishment.
D. M.
Great little local pub, decent selection of beers and wine and good outdoor space. Perfect for meeting small groups for a good chat. Cribbage friendly (the staff will play if it's quiet!)
I. C.
Very nice and plaisant place. Super friendly staff. I like ❤️

We live next door to this pub and it’s an absolute gem! Great wines, beers and beer garden and you can bring your own food in. Great for watching cricket, football, rugby etc! Awesome local.
B. K.
Nice traditional backstreet pub. Very friendly staff and a quality selection of beers.

A local institution. Having lived in the area for many years, I now find myself leaving for Leyton. The Shakey is, without doubt, the thing I will miss most about living in Stoke Newington, and I'll be back as often as I can be. Lovely people, friendly, warm and genuinely caring staff...it's the kind of boozer that you don't find many of these days.

In 1993 on the first day l moved to N16, I went with my new, unknown next door neighbour to the Shakespeare. It ended up with a late night lock in and a lifelong relationship. It is a great pub and a Stoke Newington landmark. I went there last night and nothing had changed.
T. B.
A proper pub - drink not food, chat not screen, nice furnishings, original central bar, friendly staff, punters of various ages, busy.
Loses one star for the ridiculous tradition of allowing people to stack their bikes inside. Plenty of bike stands outside.
d. b.
Wonderful little pub....a proper local 👌
M. S.
Excellent, proper pub!
G. M.
It's a classic old pub in north-est london. They do not serve cooked food, just cheeps and similar things. It smell like a pub and the atmosphere is really authentic. That means they are rude enough, that's fair!
L. G.
Love coming here - always a lovely atmosphere. Lovely small garden at the back
M. K.

P. B.
Great local pub with a good selection of beers. There's a great pizza place next door and your can bring your pizza here. What's not to love?
K. S.
Cosy relaxed pub in the quieter back streets between Dalston and Stoke Newington. The Shakespeare pretty much has it all, including pickled eggs! An 'old man' style boozer, the beer selection is good, the owners and staff are always friendly, the decor is traditional and what you'd expect from a London pub, there is a great quiz night, a beer garden, people watching terrace out the front, subtle tv's for football watchers, you can order food from the pizza place next door and there is an eclectic mix of regulars who have been going for years mixed in with plenty of newbies to the area. This pub caters for all, is great to have as a local; an escape from the hustle and bustle two roads down, but with a great vibe all the same.
I. S.
Great cosy place. Good music and atmosphere. Doggy friendly and very nice staff. Good selection of beers.
