Great pub in a sidestreet of a busy part of London which made it relatively off the beaten track. Badger Ales on draught too.
C. J.
A lunch time drink. Good badger beers. Great snacks. An unusual pub, split in two halves across an alley, good atmosphere. My half was quiet the other was crammed and noisy. I've been here many times and always enjoyed the bustling clientele - part tourist, part worker - and the well kept cellar. 😀
C. B.
lovely pub. nice staff. amazing location and sense of history
I. W.
A real gem, with great Badger beers and friendly welcoming staff.
R. D.
This pub uniquely has rooms on two sides of an alley; I drank in the quieter side. Very civilised, no music, just people chatting (not shouting). Great beer. I'll go again.
It's historic, too, named in honour of Sir Cloudesley Shovell (look him up!).
A. G.
Small, perfectly situated, visited when very cold and wet out, and a deserted Tuesday night. Would return for a swift pint.
P. J. N.
Great pub around the corner from Charing Cross Mainline Station. Interesting as it's in two separate locations facing each other across an alleyway, but sharing a cellar. Nice staff and Good menu. Recommended.
K.
Great pub with reasonable prices fir London. A convenient location and you can drink outside undercthe arches or inside. Efficient staff and even thought it was busy, there was no waiting to order drinks.
O. O.
Lovely little gem with old fashioned atmosphere (quaint) and reasonably priced drinks. Nothing fancy but that is not the point. No frills no hassle pub to enjoy your time with friends in the area
C. B.
Really enjoyed sitting at the bar here. Staff were excellent and these snacks were very spicy!!
W. B.
Love the novelty of having the same pub on both sides of the street but the staff were very friendly and we're happy to answer my questions also the beer was excellent. Well worth a visit.
C. B.
lovely pub. nice staff. amazing location and sense of history
R. B. K.
Great atmosphere and good service... The pub have locales on both sides of the street so you can also enjoy your pint outdoors...
S. u.
Ordered prosecco and not given a glass! Wet warm red wine glass for bottle of prosecco when asked for. No receipt offered. Zero interaction. Awful service from a darker hued male in the snug part of pub. Victim of inexperienced newcomers to pub industry I'm afraid.

For years this was my local when meeting people in London, halfway between Embankment and Charing Cross. The place being near ITV studios, it wasn't unusual to spot some minor celeb having a quick pint. Shared a table with a very young David Mitchell there once, but couldn't remember his name till he'd gone. Christmas time they used to have a real fire burning. Haven't been since Corona but will do soon.

Nice cosy pub, food dishes were nice but had a strange experience at the front counter putting our meal orders through.
The kitchen is open 12pm-3pm to which we didn’t realise and we tried to order food at 11.52am. The server on the counter said to come back in 8 minutes time because the kitchen isn’t open yet. I suggested paying for the order now and they can start preparing it after 12pm (we were happy to wait) but unfortunately he mentioned they can’t do that so returned 8 minutes later to place the exact same order to which he snickered! Not sure if this was dry British humour or just a silly system with no queue able to be created for meal orders before 12pm!
Steak pie was excellent but the fish and chips was unfortunately very dry. Thankfully a multitude of condiments are provided on each table which helped with this.

If you're looking for a pub in the Charing Cross area this is the one for you. Hidden away and has two bars on opposite sides of the alley. Good food as well, what's not to like?
A. G.
Busy, limited seating when we arrived but a good atmosphere and friendly staff. Popped in for a quick drink mid afternoon on a Saturday
A.
Best customer service ever, so understanding polite and friendly when I had to cancel my booking due to Covid. Amazing location too, the perfect pub!
M. G.
Great pub for a drink after shopping. Added benefit of being both sides of the street
P. H.
Really nice traditional pub close to Charing Cross, good range of beer, good ambience.

We have been doing historic and quirky pubs on visits to London for a few year's this is a beauty plesent staff, good beer and snacks.
I. W.
A real gem, with great Badger beers and friendly welcoming staff.
S. U.
We had waited a while to visit here. Beer was good. Nice decor. Only downside....not particularly friendly bat staff.
T. B. D.
An excellent pub in two halves! Good beer, haven't eaten there.
J. L.
This was a spur of the moment "let's jump in here" decision. A friend and I were walking through London and spotted two identical pubs facing each other. We were looking for a drink so decided to give it a go. The ale was great and so were the scotch eggs.
W. K.
Nice pub good food friendly staff, but the drinks are expensive......
G. H.
Great friendly bar staff. Very interesting pub in an interesting location.

The Ship & Shovell
📍1-3 Craven Passage, Charing Cross, London, WC2N 5PH
🚇Charing Cross
🍺£4.50 Amstel
❤️ Just a couple of minutes walk from Trafalgar Square and tucked away behind Charing Cross station you'll find the Ship & Shovel. The pub is uniquely split in two either side of Craven Passage. The pub is beautifully decorated in a traditional Victorian style and has a cosy feel. If you visit between 5pm & 8pm it gets very busy in the passage between both sides but there is always a good buzz about the place at these times.

One of my fav pubs. Great beer and atmosphere
I. M.
Unique London pub that has premises on both sides of the street. Historic London boozer!
F. S. (. F.
Great atmosphere and service. Seems the staff of a company who occupy offices close by, were heavily celebrating being back at work.
T. C.
Great place to meet up after the London Marathon and generally anytime you are in the Charing Cross / Embankment area.
N. H.
Decent split pub by Trafalgar Square, good range of drinks, Badger Beers and others on draught, busy and popular Mid afternoon.
C. H.
Great bar staff, great food amazing beer, fantastic setting. A hidden gem.
U. G.
Nice weekday evening atmosphere and pleasant staff
M. R.
We were struggling to find a table with food in central London when we stubbled over this gem hidden away close to Charing Cross. Great atmosphere, very busy but still great food and drinks.
B. H.
Brilliant unassuming service, proper spacious pub great for conversations with groups of friends.
R. T.
Nice pub, can get busy.
G.
Friendy staff, good price . Choice of beers
B. M.
Our annual visit to this pub, did not disappoint.
Good beer, reasonably priced for the location.
Definitely recommended for a visit.
a.
Very attentive bar staff, good beer and reasonably priced food. Ham cob with a 'handful' of chips was delicious. The chef must have big hands!
M. B.
Cosy place. Mixed crowd. Good for a quick beer
R. B.
Nice pub in charing cross, a good hall and wood house pub. I had a great pint of thirsty ferret. Kept really well. Well worth a vist.
A. H.
Good old fashioned London pub. 25% off beers 4 to 7pm
P. C.
Nice local feel. Great staff. Quirky layout. Definitely going back!
H. R.
Love this pub. Split across two bars- either side of the alleyway.
D. T.
I last reviewed this establishment 2 years ago. It is time for an update! This is one of London's real treasures, it is now and always has been. A great Halls and Woodhouse addition to the London scene. A small venue hidden away by the side of Charing Cross Station, divided by the alleyway and just magnificent. The beer is great, the staff are wonderful and it is just a brilliant place for a beer. Do drop in and have a wonderful experience.
B. M.
I knew this pub back in 1986 - which was before any of the bar staff were born. Definitely more upmarket but still a great place for a drink.
S. G.
A very happening place with delicious drink and bar food. This bar is great especially when they have live bands playing and it gets packed!!
H. E.
Cracking classic pub. Tucked away despite its central location, great for a catch up with friends.
P. J.
A lovely quiet pub, perfect for z catch up with an old mate
D. G.
Great service by friendly staff. Look after their beers. Would recommend
r. n.
Great pub with good beer and food
R. R.
Lovely Badger pub and great place yo brwak uour journey.
C. F.
Great Guinness and great food. So good to back.
A. v. C.
I really enjoyed my time here. It's quirky, what with being 'cleft in twain', but also it's clean, the staff are friendly, and it looks and feels quite traditional, quite old school. The selection of beers was much to my liking: unlike many pubs in the area, they don't serve Sam Smith's tasteless brews, but something much nicer, much richer. (Alas, I can't recall the same of the brewery... probably because I had so many beers!)
P. M.
Nice trad pub - gets crowded inside and out on a Friday evening early but then clears about a bit as people move on. Landlady always friendly. Had the occasional dodgy Guinness from there but generally good.
P. S.
Good beer and a friendly welcome. Classic old London pub.
L. P.
Very friendly staff, great selection of ales too.
S. H.
I really hope old pubs like this survive, while it's had some updates it still has that old boy pub feel. Oddly it has 2 bars directly across the Street from each other, super busy place and staff keep their cool dispite working flat out. Good range of beers and a mixed crowd of local office workers , theatre goers and tourists, not sure if many people actually live in this area. Prices are good for London and a great experience.
J. D.
It might be small, but this pub has lots of fun, history and character.
Good beer, good times and as classically British pub as could hope to find.
If you're in the area it's definitely a good place to spend a few hours talking with some good folks.
D. W.
Great little London pub, it's interesting as it is split across the alleyway.
Hall & Woodhouse run so their beers predominantly feature. Good buzz with after work drinkers. Some barrels out side for smokers.
Didn't check out food, but the usual bar snacks available.
R. B.
Lovely hosts, excellent pints of Fursty Ferret.
Quality social distancing controls in place.
Loved the place for years and its still magnificent
r. d.
Lovely panelling and on both sides of the alley. Quick service and relatively low prices. A far better choice than the nearby alternatives.
D. P.
Lovely Badger beer near to Charing Cross.
R. C.
Lovely pub especially if you love your Ales
N. M.
A pub split in 2 halves. One on each side of the road. A quiet escape of the nearby crowds.
M. Z.
Stopped in the pub for fish & chips etc. The plate was very good. Also had a pint that turned out to be delicious! The other plate was a bacon & tomato relish sandwich that was just OK. Not bad, just not "special".
Atmosphere was very nice. Was clean & tidy and had a feel of authenticity that can easily be lost w/ too many tourists passing by.
This pub was pretty good.
p. s.
Fantastic pub, great service and good selection of beer and wine. We came here after a business meeting, to unwind and discuss and could have found a better place. The bar staff are very knowledgeable on the real ales and beers they serve and the wine list is extensive and reasonably priced. A perfect example of a London pub
L. H.
Very cosy. Not part of a chain which means the food is better than most pubs I have been to recently! Felt like proper home cooked pub grub. Decent selection of ales and lagers, service could be friendlier though, felt a little indifferent. Great pub nevertheless.
K. C.
This place is really two pubs on either side of an alleyway. I hired out the smaller pub on Saturday night for my birthday party and it was fabulous. My 40 or so guests enjoyed the atmosphere, drinks and buffet which was served upstairs. The staff were great to deal with in the lead up and on the night - eg going out of their way to find food options I was happy with, printing lists of my preferred wines and suggesting an after party location, given that their licence is only until 11pm (see separate review for Players Bar & Kitchen). Thanks to assistant manager Justin and barman James for a great night!
D. C.
A lovely pub a few minutes away from Embankment tube. Can get very busy in the early evening with post-work drinkers. As others have said, the pub is split into two halves with a passageway between. Beer well kept and a good variety of ales. Haven't eaten here. Service generally good but can get slow at busiest times.
A. S.
A great little pub split in two across a tiny little street underneath Charing cross station. The ales are good and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. I have been there several times on my own for a quiet drink and to read a magazine. Loads of charm you feel like you are in Dickensian London.
J. P.
Very small traditional pub near a tourist hot spot. Interior is mostly wooden and dark with narrow passages. Bar is quite small but has a range of drinks on offer, prices seemed high even for London!
C. R.
Small but charming pub. Only a few tables but has a very very authentic feel. Took two family members (we are French and I am living in London myself) and they were very impressed. Snacks not a lot of choices available and all cold so slight let down but when you're hungry after a few hours walk who cares! 😀
D. L.
Nice place in a hide-away little passage a couple of minutes walk from Trafalgar Square. Standard pub menu, standard choice of beer and ale, standard prices as for London.
But the atmosphere is really charming.
The place has two facilities facing each other on both sides of the lane, and two stories.
J. W.
you have got to go. Fantastic English pub
H. M.
I like it here. Its the only pub I found where I didn't need to order from an app. I will be going there again.
j. t.
Great happy hour for early part of the week
C. L.
Cool place off the beaten track. Two sides split across an alleyway. Serves badger beer in cask or bottles. Tends to get busy but good place in the afternoon. Old school style wood and creaky floorboards. Shh don't tell the tourists...
J. V.
Fab little pub in an excellent location. I arranged a birthday party in the Crow's Nest and it was a perfect venue - characterful and just the right size. Everyone working at the pub was extremely friendly and helpful, taking collection of a birthday cake during the day and providing us with lovely nibbles and prosecco in the evening. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
A. L.
Great pub, and definitely in two halves - which is great and I did not realise this before I went and walked into a busy part - and thought is was dreaming or even in the wrong pub when I saw the Ship & shovel sign on the other side of the alleyway.
If one part is busy then do try the other part
The part on the other side appeared to have an upstairs bit which is useful as it is quite small
Staff pleasant and polite and food service was quick
It is in Villiers street and a couple of minutes from Charing Cross main line station
R. W.
One of my regular pubs when in Central London. Great location underneath the Arches off Villiers St. Good beer (Badger though I prefer Fuller's). Decent food. Great ambience. Bars two sides of the Lane.
B. B.
Lots of nooks and crannies, both little pubs full of character.
Had the sausage and mash; the over cooked sausages were tough as old boots and difficult to cut.
Still, definitely worth a visit or two.
A. A.
Good, lively pub most evenings. A choice of two bars, separated across the alley. One is small and intimate, the other around twice the size if you feel like something livelier. Great beer
C. S.
Good bar to stand outside in the alley on a nice day/night and enjoy some beers with friends. We got some food the last time I visited and were fairly disappointed. While the portions were generous the taste was only ok. We got the fish and chips and the fish still had its skin on under the batter and some of the batter was still raw. The chips weren't cooked through and the only condiments were in little packages on the table. I would drink here again but would avoid the food.
J.
London's only pub in two halves, apparently. Good range of beer. Nice to get away from the traffic. Excellent landlady. V handy for the tube. A lot to like.
G. H.
Lovely quirky pub , greeted by a friendly young barman on a busy Friday night . Unfortunately once we went to find a table which we did it had no seats so we asked a man for chairs , he was very curt towards us . If we hadn’t of already bought our drinks we would have left .
Fortunately two lovely Male customers gave us 2 chairs they weren’t using .
L. P.
Nice pub for after work drinks, but would benefit from more chairs, both inside and out. Toilets were ok but could do with a freshen up. Staff were kind and drink was reasonably priced for being Central London.
t. p.
Nice bar shame the second bar was closed due to lack of staff
I.
Always the best pint in town
F. L.
2 pubs straddling the street. Cool idea, and really lovely interiors. It's nice and quiet, despite being literally under Charing Cross station and around the corner from Trafalgar Square. Perfect for a quiet pint to rest weary legs.
T. D.
Great location, good staff and sumptuous wood-glass-historical two sides of Craven Alley bar;
R. B.
Love this pub and visit whenever I'm in London, often full by work kicking out time which is always a good sign, plenty of standing room outside though. Interesting quirk of a pub being on both sides of the street, happily there's a bar and toilets in both halves
I. B.
Great beer and atmosphere
R. K.
The Ship and Shovell is always fun. Near to some places where interesting people spend their working time. Always an interesting conversation to eavesdrop. Don't go if you don't have security clearance. It also has a good selection of beers etc on offer. The staff are pleasant and efficient and the Naval history in the photographs and artifacts is endlessly inspiring. Look up Sir Cloudesly before you go. If I am there you can treat me to a lovely smooth pint of IPA. Cheers. Sometimes.a bit busy but the.toilets are nice.
M. D.
Good spot for a pint before a show at Heaven.
i. m.
Friendly staff and very popular. Badger ales excellent tho can be hard to get thru to the bar at peak times. Unusual as pub is in 2 halves each side of busy archway up to Charring Cross station
A. D.
Nice and cosy pub just off of Charing Cross. The staff are lovely and even when busy they always have a smile on their faces. We were outside mostly due to nice weather, unfortunately a number of homeless people come around asking for money which kills the vibe a bit but other than that, it's a cute pub!
g. o.
Comfortable pub good beer
P. T.
First time in this pub... Loved it.
p. t.
Great service, beer, and 25% off!
D.
First visit in years. Still the same place. Friendly, lively bar. Excellent beers from Hall & Woodhouse. London prices, but it is Central London, near theatres. Interesting pictures and nick backs on display.
B.
Nice cosy old pub in two sides in the heart of london. Popular with the after work crowd but nice traditional decor inside. Bit pricy but good place. No noisy music or tv blaring sports.
T. S.
Nice lovely pub hidden away from busy streets for London. Come in for a nice beer. We was here during the day so calm and super friendly staff.
L. J.
Great pub, from a great brewery. Badgers brewery pubs are far and few between in London, but this one is a cracker. From the complete range of beers they offer, to the quirky old period features of the bar. And then there is the great unusual feature of having the bar split in two across a footpath, each with their own feeling.
D. W.
Nice pub with lots of character, in two parts either side of the alley. Good selection of Badger ales which you don't see often in London. Does get busy in the evenings.
S. T.
Fantastic split pub (I drank in here before the additional L was added to the end of Shovel(l). Gets incredibly busy but what central London pub doesn’t??
Ales are good and it’s still nice to be able to drink outside a pub in the centre of town.
Prices aren’t great but considering where it is...
s. j.
Neat pub, well kept. Small and cozy on one side, a bit more open on the other. It's one pub that's split into two across a walkway, so you can indulge in the unusual feeling of leaving the pub and going into the pub (?) without really leaving the pub (?!) Feel free to take your tipple with you as they are all under the same license.
Good pints here, the Badger ales are nice. We came here because they have home-made pork scratchings, but we were a bit disappointed in the result. I'm no stranger to scratchings, but these were unbelievably hard (ever ate a dehydrated rock? These are as close as you'll get!) and resulted in about 75% of the bowl being inedible. I will say the ones that I could eat were really tasty...just wish there were more of them!
K. G.
A pub split in half! Took my other half there. Great service, no half measures 😆
H. P.
It's one of those extraordinary places. Managing to be off the beaten track in Charing Cross. Great beer. Historic twin pubs facing each other across an alley.
S. P.
Interesting pub, as it's split into two parts either side of an alley virtually underneath Charing Cross station.
Excellent Hall & Woodhouse ales all the way from Dorset. The Tanglefoot was superb.
Typical pub food - burger, steak & ale pie, fish & chips. But it was good quality and reasonably priced by central London standards.
Cosy atmosphere with plenty of wood panelling and old timber floors. Definitely worth a visit.
A. E.
A wonderful surprise. A real pub within 100 yards of Trafalgar Square. Both sides now.
J. B.
Unique pub, split across the street. It can get exceptionally busy after work but there's plenty of space outside and no cars. Reasonable selection of beers.
M. W.
A personal favorite of mine. Usually has a good selection of Badger beers on handpump. Normally busy but the service is always swift and taking your beer outside is allowed. Especially pleasant in summer but a bit of a wind tunnel in winter as this is by the underpass below Charing cross station.
J. H.
I love the way this pub is split into two halves, very attractive interiors in both sides, with an upstairs room which is often a lot quieter than downstairs. It's a Hall and Woodhouse pub (Badger etc) so the beer is good too.
S. A.
Very nice pub tucked away between embankment and Charing cross. I've booked out the top floor a few times for work dos and the staff have been very helpful and friendly every time! It can get quite crowded at weekends which is the only downer otherwise nice place
T. P.
A well-run traditional city boozer with a small selection of good ales and pub food. Cosy in winter, lively in summer. Limited space for outdoor drinking in summer.
K. S.
Very nice pub 👌 👍 👏
D. C.
A boozer in two halves - north and south! Don’t get many of them. Not too noisy which I like as a 50 something. Good selection of ales. Right behind Charing X so good for access. I was really rather drunk. It’s was Si Fellow’s Birthday see. Not my fault. He invited me.
J. A.
Nice cosy pub a little off the beaten track in a back street a couple of minutes' walk from Embankment tube station and Charing Cross. Good menu and distinctive beers on offer.
D. R.
Wonderful traditional pub 👏 👌
D. S.
Had some great nights here. Good for meeting a crew of friends. Can get a little cosy though, not much room. There are two buildings that incorporate this pub that are opposite each other. There is a slightly more spacious one and the more cosy one which is what we've been to.
J. P.
Pub split across two sides of the street with some outdoor tables. Smaller bar had 4 different Badger beers on tap along with a few of the regular beers/lagers. Price not at all bad
K. M.
This charming, smallish and relatively quiet and uncrowded (for C London) pub is split into two halves by a pedestrian walkway.
The walls of both are lined with Victorian style etched mirror glass ... which helps very well to disguise their true size.
The food is reasonably priced for C London. The drink however is pricey : eg £ 9.60p for a pint and a half of Peroni.
Would I patronise again ?
Yes : but not, I think, as often as I would like because of ehat I feel is the extortionate price of its drinks.
P. H.
Quite busy pub divided on both sides of a street. Small, but decent quality beer selection, friendly service.
S. A.
Great pub, love the decor, a great selection of ales and I got the impression they were well looked after too.
The staff put up well with my three mates who were hammered, so can't really fault the place.
A. S.
We absolutely loved The Ship and Shovell. We stopped here on our layover in London. We took Heathrow Express to Paddington then to Embankment, which is where this pub sits right next to, also near Charing Cross station. After exploring the area doing your typical touristy things, we had about an hour to spare. We stopped here to grab a beer before heading back to Heathrow. The neat thing about this bar is it is split across the street. So you can walk into either entrance or go into one and go underground to get to the other. Many people were standing outside having a beer, but we opted to go to the small bar in one of the entrances. The bartender was so friendly and really good at explaining why some of the beers were room temperature and some were refrigerated. We had a really nice time.
M. J.
For a reason I cannot quantify this is one of my favourite pubs in the world. Maybe it's the alley running through it, maybe it's because it genuinely feels like you've stepped back in time or possibly because it's a bit of respite in a hectic area of london. Whatever it is I'll keep going back
D. M.
Good central London pub with strange quirk of being on two sides of an alley way. Beer good, but can get very busy of an evening when the nearby offices empty.
K. W.
Two sides to this pub with a street/ footpath in the middle. Quite cool, busy and cramped on the inside. Can take a while to get server due to the people standing at the bar but the staff are decent.
D. R.
Hidden gem, good selection of beers.
J. H.
It's a Badger brewery pub and as such doesn't have a great range of ales
The legend ale (seasonal) is on at the moment and was perfect accompaniment to the Ham,egg and chips I ate, whilst charging my phone and my body before another traipse across London town.
D. Y.
A most unusual pub in two buildings. One on each side of a public walkway.
Good Badger Best Bitter on tap.
M. C.
The shop and shovell is great, but it does get busy. They don't have the most innovative beer selection, but it's OK. Very decent after work spot.
E. C.
Love this little pub, tucked away from the rest of the world. Nice and cosy inside. Friendly staff. And surprisingly popular considering its location.
T. G.
Great traditional pub ...in two halves! It will be busy, so you might not get a table, but the alley outside is atmospheric enough.
J. R.
Badger pub, nice pint of Tanglefoot in splendidly preserved Victorian decor. Standing room only on a Tuesday till 8ish when the crowds disperse. Usual London prices: £4.90 a pint, so still (just) cheaper than petrol.
S. W.
It's a good old fashioned pub that's just a pub, no sports no music just people catching up and having a laugh over a few drinks. Great relaxed atmosphere.
N. B.
Fascinating old pub split across both sides of the street. Good beers on tap and in bottle. Can get really busy and seating/space is somewhat limited.
L. L.
Good beer and very pleasant staff...what's not to like (London prices - but it is in Central London, between Trafalgar Square and Embankment...so that's not a criticism of this particular great pub).
D. T.
Decent pub for a pint.
C. P.
A welcoming and friendly pub serving good food and beer. A nice out of the way place, I always enjoy drinking and eating in this pub.
t. g.
Great pub, friendly staff, cosy atmosphere and a good selection of beers on tap. A great hidden pub, would visit again.
A. B.
A pub that knows how to look after its beer and its' customers. The staff are always friendly and the food has always been good.
Recommend the cheesy chilli chips - they keep us coming back.
O. D.
Traditional pub, quiet and comfy. Drinks expensive, but no more so than anywhere else in London
A. M.
Hats off to The Ship And Shovell. Spotlessly clean, staff excellent. Prices fair. Covid organization excellent. Ales well kept. Well done!
I. F.
My favourite pub in Charing Cross area. Great Badger beer, fast professional service. Central location not stupidity expensive. Highly recommended.
R. A.
Great pub with lots of space indoors and outdoors. Large variety of drinks and they even do gluten free beer too.
F. P.
Not much space. Stools at tables so uncomfortable to sit and eat. My double burger looked good, but was as tough as old boots, unfortunately...
P. F.
I am perhaps biased in my opinion of this pub, because they serve both my favourite beer (Tanglefoot) on tap, and do incredibly good fresh pork scratchings.
Separated across two sides of the narrow Craven Passage, it inevitably causes mayhem when meeting with friends - are you in the left or right pub? Which direction are you coming from? Coupled with this the fact that it gets incredibly busy come work clocking off time, it could be another run of the mill London centre pub. But the cosy wooden booths, great beer selection, and free wifi, make it a cut above.
If you can sneak into the tiny booth at the back of the smaller pub, it's one of the cosiest places to have a pint in central London, and three or four of you could snuggle together in there, if you don't mind getting very close.
P. N.
What a fabulous lunch. Kind hosts, spotlessly clean and great beer and food!!
M. B.
Plus: Nice pub with a good atmosphere and friendly staff.
Minus: Did not serve "real" food even if their homepage had a decent menu with main dishes. At site they only had a very limited snack menu.
P. W.
Good Badger pints, decent good tucked in a small lane under Charing Cross station. Our family of 4 was a bit cramped, but the character and friendliness of the place made up for the tiny stools. Try the cheddar sandwich.
R. B.
Really good pub with well kept Badger beers. Friendly staff. Ideal place to pop in for a pint and a meal at lunchtimes.
M. B.
The Ship and Shovel is a London institution. Split in two by a public right of way, it's got character to spare.
Good traditional British beers on tap and a busy, upbeat atmosphere.
P. C.
Atmospheric Hall and Woodlouse pub, uniquely, in my experience, on both sides of the road. Plenty of space to stand outside on summer around barrels and beautiful ship-themed décor inside. If you go there, read up about Sir Cloudsley Shovell. I assumed it's named in his honour. The beers are good. Try Tanglefoot.
D. C.
Excellent pub tucked away off a side street from Charing Cross station & Villers street. The Ship & Shovell has tonnes of character, epitomised by the fact it is split across the road and joined by a shared cellar. Selection of beers is good, but no exceptional but beats many in the area. My go to pub for Embankment and Charing Cross
H. H.
A fun pub that has bars on both sides right outside a tunnel. Busy but not to crowded in a Friday night.
S. T.
Often busy, but service is usually quick and friendly.
This Charing Cross pub is actually two buildings, situated at either side of the walkway which passes underneath Charing Cross station.
H.
Card only was a bit of an issue. Visitors to town unfamiliar with current protocols.
R. N.
Tucked away in a corner a bit so it's not overrun with tourists. Love the quirky split site setup. Cozy and interesting. Check out the model ship in the fireplace.
P. N.
Great pub we often meet here with family every 2 months and have a good laugh. Good beer also.
J. B.
Nice pub, much etched glass in a Victorian style. Beer decent: Badger's ales. Unusually two separate buildings.
It sits on two sides of an alleyway which passes under the arches at Charing Cross station.
Historical interest: The two buildings, but one pub, The Ship and The Shovell are supposedly named after Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, who was wrecked with three of his ships on the Scilly Isles in 1707. This was one of the biggest British naval disasters. It lead to the development of chronometers for navigation. Sir Cloudesley is now entombed in a splendid tomb in Westminster Abbey.
He is also commemorated by a rock band, Sir Cloudesley Shovell, whose musical offerings are perhaps an acquired taste.
D. B.
Decent London pub with a bit of character where you can choose from a range of real ales. Staff very friendly. Can get quite busy in the evenings.
R. D.
Nice and quirky pub, it is divaded in two one in each side of the street. Not many ale options, only badger brewery. Too hot inside.
R. G.

A. M.
Great beer and great staff. Even when super busy they can get the orders out quickish. Great pre-show quick drink!
K. S.
Too full of loud, entitled, drunk, suit-beswathed bankers with shiny purple ties waiting for the rush hour to die down. Bit of an unfriendly place. Bar staff too busy to care.
L. Y.
Very unique pub on both sides of old London alley way, just loving the atmosphere
B. R.
Great pub. Spoke to the landlady very briefly, but she was really pleasant. Nice selection of ales.
