Reviews of The Stage Door Pub & Kitchen
D. M.
One of the greatest pubs in London village.
A firm favourite should we go to watch the rugby.
The food is great and the beer is plentiful! The choices are great and there is always a good atmosphere with the staff. Well worth a visit.
Great pub.
Takes American Express.
J. W.
Its decent pub with an interesting history. It can become crowded at times however. I've also had the unpleasant experience of a warm beer here a few times. Would be a good meeting up point for people looking to head out further on.
S. H.
Lovely little pub, always good service, friendly staff and a great roof garden.
J. C. (. a. J.
Decent pub just around the corner from the Old Vic Theatre. Three cask beers on tap. A few drop down benches outside plus a covered roof garden.
j. p.
been coming to this pub on and off for over 30 years much better since they lost the pool table very nice pub
L. 1.
I remember when this was the Halfway House back in the early 70's, Dave was the manager and his niece looked after his kids.
Changed a lot now but still a great pub, the food is a great improvement.
A. M.
Lovely little pub. Only stayed for 1 but will deffo be going back! 👍🏻
A. M.
What a wonderful experience! Visited for the first time in October 2017.
The bartenders are nice and have plenty of different types of beer. The Manager came over and was very sweet! Back again in October 2018 and the manager remembered us. This time we ate here had the fish and chips along with a few bottles of wine. Just a wonderful experience. Back again on August 29, 2019 had the Fish & Chips @£11.95 (great price and it was a gigantic portion) and 4 beers @£21.60. Can't get enough of this place friendly bartenders and great food and beer.
D. D.
It is so easy to serve a great fish & chips but not many people do it right. The Stage Door wins hands down. Scared to finish mine because I want it to last as long as possible! Place is busy at lunch time and jam packed in the evening. Big smiles from the staff. Big up for the team and the Stage Door. Just can't find the stage thou!😅
G.
Pub's history can be traced back to 1651 (Half the Way House). Busy on a Sunday evening. Efficient service. We had the Roast Beef: a more than ample serving, but very tough meat. I don't know what cut was used, but we requested steak knives - which eventually arrived - but still was a struggle to cut the slices of rare beef. Don't order the shiraz (undrinkable), rather go for the merlot. Some good draught beers on offer.
E. A. G.
Hidden gem! Great rooftop area for casual drinks with friends. The staff were really friendly and helpful and made good recommendations for drinks. The outdoor heaters are good when they're on but they don't stay on permanently, you have to keep pushing the button every 10 mins which was the only negative of the night. I'd definitely recommend a coat and scarf in case it's chilly but other than that, it was a perfect venue. Hope to come back someday soon.
J. C. O. (.
Very friendly staff, great value ££ great selection of ales, largers and wines. Amazing home made pies to die fore!!👍
J. F.
So pleased the Stage Door is open again. Amazing service on the rooftop terrace last night, despite the cold and rain! The staff were wonderfully friendly, the service was fantastic and the food and drink delicious! Will absolutely be returning. Thank you, Stage Door!
T. M.
during my week of staying in london I enjoyed this pub so much so that I came back to it 3 times I personally thought the Pints of Guinness were fairly cheap (£4.50) and so was the burgers and steak. 11-14£ getting to cook your own steak how you want it at the table was a cool experience as well.
P. N.
Nice place. The beer is good , a friendly atmosphere with great service
N. A.
Two chips took a lifetime to arrive and I've never seen a pint poured like they do here, but otherwise, good atmosphere and a nice rooftop garden area
A. A.
4 stars because it's a nice pub with good attentive staff & a hidden but nice roof terrace.
My only complaint was I felt at around £10-13 each the pizzas they were definitely on the pricey side for what they were. They were essentially oven cooked pizza that had definitely been cooked from frozen.
D. M.
Visited the outdoor terrace soon after outdoor hospitality reopened. Food service was rather slow, especially as we were the only customers present, but I'm putting this down to the kitchen perhaps not being up to speed with new Covid working practices and possibly not being open when we ordered. The staff were helpful and have set up one way systems, sanitiser and a check in system.
W. L.
Thought the £20.00codyt to go on roof terrace was over priced. Dont was up there even no what.no really view. No info about that clearly stated. Wine price expensive.
D. c.
Great pub and very friendly and attentive bar staff. I normally visit alone, but feel valued and at home being here. The service is quick and the staff make all customers feel welcome. A hidden gem and I would highly recommend a visit here
D. P.
The first meal i had was not up to there expections it was changed right way
C. P.
Nice terrace upstairs. Decent burger good value £11. Friendly staff. Pints were expensive. £5.70
P. W.
I love a traditional pub and this is a traditional pub. A nice selection of beer and friendly bar staff.
C. O.
An underrated pub with a nice rooftop and awesome staff! Special shout out to Kirstina and the young male bar tender (whose name escapes me - sorry!). The highlight was ending the night with an impromptu sing along which included the whole pub (bar staff as well!). Thanks for having us and see you again soon!
R. S.
Good pub dealing with the lock down admirably staff excellent and outside drinking area is great
M. T.
Lovely proper pub vibe in the centre of London.
S. W.
Staff are friendly and drinks are good. Never tried food.
A. M.
Nice lively pub tucked away in the backstreets near The Old Vic. Apparently has a terrace but didn't check that out. Great atmosphere. Small menu but food was excellent and reasonably priced. Ales and beers well kept. Worth checking out.
C. M.
Great place for a drink. The roof terrace is 👌
J. B.
Nice terrace, nice staff, nice beers, shows sport
d. h.
Recently found this place on a walk and am incredibly happy that I did! Nestled away behind the old vic theatre is a gem that is certainly hidden. Good selection of beer and very spacious interior is - and it's dog friendly, what more could you need on a lazy Sunday afternoon or a spring evening
I. J.
loved the pub. very friendly staff. I was clueless about what beer to order so I asked the staff if she could recommend me what beer to drink. Then she let me try some of the beer before ordering! Felt very welcome and the place was very cozy too. would love to visit again if i visit London again
S. J.
Very nice place. Roof top was nice too. Had some one with a guitar accompanied with a lovely girl singing. I had fish and chips, partner had a burger and chips. Played a couple games of pool. Would go again. Nice little touch with the Apple and pairs next to the stairs
M. L.
Lovely old fashioned pub. Great beer and the menu/food looks excellent. Just off the main road so fairly quiet. Favourite pub in this part of town by far. No TVs so if it's sport you're looking for it's not for you 😁👍
A. C.
Good selection of beers. Wobbly bar stools. Proper pub. Food looked and smelled lovely too. The portions looked large too. A guy along the bar from me ordered fish and chips but left half of it. Even though I'd already eaten, I was tempted to nick a chip when he left!
P. P.
Chilled out. Not bad. On the nice and quiet side.
P. C.
Lively pub, situated behind the Old Vic Theatre, hence the name. Good range of beer on tap. In good weather, go upstairs to their roof terrace. They serve steak, which you can cook to your own taste on a hot stone at your table. Very nice.
D. O.
Dominated by the large central bar, this busy pub is always going to feel like a tight squeeze to navigate. If the weather permits, there's a rooftop terrace with a fair number of tables and one area that is covered. £5.40 for a pint of Guinness. Has a pool table.
G. R.
Great pub one block off of Waterloo. Low key, traditional pub with a good selection of cask ales and drafts. Sunday night live music was a plus. Comfortable settings, friendly bartender, my go to place when I'm in Waterloo.
S. Z.
Nice food, nice and quiet, and most of the staff are very friendly the few times I've visited. I'm subtracting 2 stars due to our last visit when the senior man behind the bar spent our entire time there passive-aggressively staring at us with obvious disapproval of *something*, who knows what. Is this a cultural thing? If you're unhappy with something the customers are doing, tell them - don't just stare them down until they feel so uncomfortable they leave!
A. M.
Nice beer garden but very pricey
M.
I had a very nice weekend here. Rooms are on the second floor, good size for a single person, nicely furnished, clean. Toilet and shower are separate, and also very clean.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Getting around is easy. You can walk to the city centre, or use the nearby bus- and subway station, or a Santander cycle.
The pub is cozy, food and beer are tasty.
T. H.
Slightly better hidden pub with a nice athmosphere and fun details in the furniture, like the retro videogames acting as tables.
V. D.
Nice top rooftop sitting area very cosy
A. F.
One of those pubs that looks like a pub should be. Good beer and atmosphere. Extremely pleasant is the small roof terrace - gets very busy. It's true, senior staff are very old school, so it's love or hate at first sight...
A. H.
A really good unpretentious pub behind the old Vic. Been going here on and off for almost 30 years. Always good service, genuine pub atmosphere. Updates itself of course, but still keeps its original character.
C. H.
Cask ales were fresh, cool and tasty. Pub food was fresh, hot and tasty. Convenient to my hotel. Walter was very friendly and helpful with what was in the area, including food options. They have a little outdoor terrace that looks to be nice.
K. S.
Great Pub, amazing selection of real ales. Great Home made food. Roof terrace great spot to soak the sun. Staff are very friendly and helpful . Strongly recommend to pop and grab a pint and one of those juicy burgers.
J. M.
Odd meal times but had a tasty cask ale!
E. C.
Good local boozer with a small but ok selection of ales on draft. Also does decent food (burgers and a few other bits). There's a roof garden up stairs which predictably gets busy in decent weather but is worth seeking out if you're there early enough!
T. d. L.
Small, sort of hidden pub in Southwark. Love this place's rooftop beer "garden". Had a great night here last week. Pleanty of beers, ales, ciders to choose from. Food is good, not great.
D. M.
A friendly gaff with a proper pint of Westons cider.
S. S.
Good atmosphere, not normally too busy and the food is really good - definitely a cut above the usual pub grub. I had a really good, fresh salad and my friend had steak, they seemed to do a great job of both.
A. S.
A really cosy pub that's close enough to the bright lights of the South Bank while serving as a bit of a bolthole from the throng of culture vultures and tourists that can make it feel a little bit frantic at times. This makes it great for those who work in the area, and a good choice when you just want a quiet chat and a pint. There's a roomy pool area at the back, and decent pub grub is served into the evening.
K. R.
Good atmosphere, but a tad on the dimly lit side. Had the chicken caesar salad and it was very tasty indeed. Nice selection of cask ales on tap.
S. H.
I go there quite often, not the cheapest place around but decent. The steak on a stone is well worth a try. Staff are generally very friendly and helpful. I also recently bumped into my niece in there, I hadn't seen her in 3 years and also an old school friend that I hadn't seen in 28 years!
I. H.
Been here for lunch a few times, Must say its not crowded but the burgers are cheap and really good value. The staff are friendly and helpful. Worth going if you work around the corner as service is really fast
A. E. -. L. B.
The Stage Door is a great little back street pub with suberb staff. Been going there for years they go from strength to strength. Give them visit, you won’t be disappointed....🍻
j. d.
I cannot drink alcohol so am not best placed to review public houses but it does have toilets and food. Later there were people with guitars and much singing, I guess that places that have people with guitars and singing are much needed in these challenging times (forgot to mention that chips come in a tiny bucket)
C. A.
Excellent pub, fantastic beers. Try the Purity Mad Goose! Decent food too - the steak served with a hot stone to cook it yourself is an interesting option. Definitely worth a trip.
P. B.
Lovely little eclectic pub. Great selection on tap. Highlight is the rooftop terrace with some lovely evening views
t. h.
Open mic night on a Sunday here is popular. It has a good atmosphere. And I found it enjoyable to play there. I Would recommended it to any musicians wanting to play. And if you just like to just listen too.
J. C.
They do a good pint in here. Also it's normally quieter than other pubs around which is good, if you want to actually talk to whomever you're out with.
P. H.
Nice pub with a decent selection of beers and some tables on a roof terrace. Doesn't tend to get too rammed and I've always found everyone who works there to be very friendly.
L. S.
Had my leaving drinks last Thursday, a bit crowded but reserving a table was a good idea. Friendly and helpful staff.
M. D.
It's a nice pub with a beer garden terrace, they have good food and large portioned also they do great burgers but be ready for it to get messy!
E. S.
Burger was really good and staff was very friendly.
E. F.
No food served on Sundays. The pub is local, but not grimy, mind you I was there on a Sunday afternoon. 2 good sized TVs available, n plenty of sitting n space even when there is a big football game on
M. D.
Good range of beers and a reasonable roof terrace to sit on warm evenings. Screens for sport and pool table. Gets crowded with pre theatre goers for Old Vic.
p. m.
Holiday destinations can be a bit impersonal sometimes but the Stage Door bar staff on a wet afternoon when I visited were more than friendly; and a contrast to a sea side resort pub I had just attended.
b. w.
Lovely pie, mash, peas and gravy and a pint
Y.
The pub is nice enough, there's outdoor seating upstairs and the average selection of beers. It was quite cramped when we were there and not many tables to order food from.
R. M.
A decent pub , wth good hearty and quirkily named grub, this pub hides round the back of the old vic, its cosy and welcoming, and its a nice place away from the hustle and bustle of Waterloo and the south bank.
the service at the bar is fine , but we ended up waiting for what seemed like an age for the food..
This is really a 3 star bordering on 4 star, if they sort the service out it could be a real gem
S. C.
Nice spot a bit off the beaten track especially with the roof terrace in the summer. Can be rather devoid of atmosphere on a Sunday though. If you want a quiet drink it could be for you.
J. D.
Nice and relaxed pub with a decent terrace. During the week it's busy with the after work people but on weekends it's a chilled pot plans with good food and friendly staff
N. M.
Only had one pint up on the roof one sunny afternoon. The roof garden is a great wee space to sit in the sun. Didn't have any food, but the people next to us had a steak that smelled great.
b. l.
Extremely cozy, and good vibes. Definitely the right place for hanging out with friends, especially on Sundays. Didn't want to get up from that couch! I'll come back dude!
D. P.
Visited with a group of 6 last week, was given a nice table, wasn't too busy and service was attentive. COVID procedures were being enforced and followed well.
L.
Very expensive for alcohol, £7.00 for a double vodka and lime and £4.00 for a small portion of chips. Friendly bar staff and attentive but the prices are high.
P. S.
A Sunday afternoon was not busy at all, so it was pleasant to have a quiet drink.
A. H.
Good old London Pub
M. W.
Great real pub, good selection of ales and food. Nice roof area to sit out on.
M. M.
Nice little private environment and low range of alcohol to chose from. Staff very friendly and positive vibe can be sensed.
A. G.
London pub opened since 1664 in Waterloo. Ask a beer from the house and a burger and enjoy great times with friends.
T. K.
Decent fish and chips and okay selection of beer. Helpful staff that let me sample the beers before I bought them.
S. S.
Decent pub a stone's throw from Waterloo. Decent beer, good service and reasonably priced pub grub (bog standard pub fayre).
I. D.
Although my friend liked here, not my cup of tea.
Close to the travelodge (why we were there), staff and drink ok, just something i didn't warm to there.
M. P.
Amazing hospitality. Great location and friendly service. Excellent range of whiskeys and gin.
T. G.
Wandered in looking for a bite to eat. Sat at the bar and had a great burger. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Great service!
A. S.
Family atmosphere, you can enjoy nice talk with your friends. The table pool is only for fun, not to bet on it
K. A.
Great location. Rooftop garden is brilliant in the sun and they have a good selection of beer.
N. T.
Nice atmosphere I only had a dessert and it was over microwaved the sides of the sticky toffee were chewy but the burger and chips looked nice
K. M.
Great atmosphere, but get there early if you want a table! Good local beers.

London's greatest pub. Visit this place without fail! You will have an awesome evening!
J. W.
The bartenders were awesome. It was our first time in London, and we were treated like regulars. Right around the corner from the Hampton.
M. H.
I like this pub. It has a nice atmosphere but could do with more seating.
R. K.
Decent inside, relatively cheap for a London pub, nothing that sets it apart from another pub but still worth a pint if you're nearby.
J. D.
A good pint of real ale and the barmaid was so kind to us when we spilt nearly a whole pint of it over the table... Will definitely be back.
H. G. K.

(Translated) We were rather spontaneous there to end the evening and: I am truly surprised how friendly and accommodating the barmaids and ladies were here. Before I bought an ale (of which I knew absolutely none) I was allowed to try for free and even when I wanted to buy a gin, I could be friendly and professional to show who has why and what taste differences. In addition, the music was great and the pub was nice and clean.
Was a great wet and happy evening there.

(Translated) Cozy little pub in the middle of London. Very nice and courteous staff. Great prices for drinks and small snacks, which also taste very good. We were fortunate enough to stop spontaneously on an evening where live music was played, adding to the ambience

Gemütlicher kleiner Pub mitten in London.
