Nice local pub. We went there for a NYE party. Two dancefloors. Decent toilets. Not the kindest security, let some people go for a smoke with a drink, and others no. A great touch was to see that staff is a team - you could see they actually had fun working there. Keep it up⭐

Recent renovations in the garden area are looking great, it looks like they're going to grow plants around the outside, which will cut down on some of the noise, although the road was actually not too noisy (apart from the odd knobhead on an obnoxiously loud motorbike). Staff are lovely. Nice selection of drinks.

I've visited The Star a few times now and it never disappoints. Lovely atmosphere, pleasant bar staff and always good music and booze. If you haven't tried it already, they do an absolutely wicked bloody mary. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.

Similar to the other positive leaning reviews, this place definately delivers in most areas that you want from a pub; staff, drink options etc With so many awesome pubs in the local area I would suggest going here. Personal points from visiting last night - The app to sign up and use is just as comprehensive as other venues and offers a handy point system. On that note, the working manager has a FANTASTIC vibe and makes everyone and everything feel welcome. Sick pub

I come here all the time, its a relaxed atmosphere and a nice place to come for a beer or two and maybe some food. At the moment they have "we serve humans" resident in their kitchen, who make a really nice Mac & Cheese burger, but they also do chicken wings which vary in spice levels from day to day. Sometimes it's a bit too busy for my liking, but there's usually space to sit if you're happy sharing a table or sitting on a bar stool.

Similar to the other negative leaning reviews, this place is spenny side and sort underdelivers in most areas that you want from a pub; staff, drink options etc With so many awesome pubs in the local area I wouldn't suggest going here. Personal pain points from visiting last night - The app to sign up and use is a UX nightmare and the working manager had about as much charm and customer service skills as the lightless, lockless, shitsmeared carsey. I appreciate it's the first week back inside but ordering spenny drinks and waiting 15 mins to get them from old huffinator just feels out of order.

Cute place. We were there by chance at my boyfriend's bday and got a bottle of proseco for his celebration. They staff was very nice and kind.

I have been here three times and hired the function room up stairs for a party. I like the atmosphere of this place both the pub and the function room. I thought the bar staff were friendly and aren't fazed when you ask to try a real ale before you buy, which is normally a good indicator. I like the real ale on offer from local breweries. I thought the price is fairly average for the area. They had three pumps on, which is about right for the size on the pub. Any more and the turn round will not be fast enough. I think they also play a good wide variety of music. The function room is excellent I would definitely use that again. The is an option on the karaoke room which we took and was a great laugh.

Does the job as a local boozer, good selection of beers. Nice atmosphere. Staff are warm and polite (with one exception). I was there for a group Christmas meal. It seems to be a general rule at all Christmas parties that you leave feeling fleeced. This place was no different, food was substandard, portions were tiny.

Fantastic burgers with the best sourdough buns! Really reasonably priced too. This pub has great vibes and lovely staff. We order the chips with gravy & cheese which was a little weird as the cheese was in lumps and the gravy was super runny but the burgers & atmosphere made up for it. Still 5* I just won't be ordering the chips with gravy next time!

This has become my new local. It has plenty of outdoor seating which is perfect for this heatwave. A good selection of ales and gin (my fav). Bar staff are friendly and serve quickly. Friday nights are popular and there is a live DJ who played a good combo of music. A few lairy people but the bouncers kept on top of it. I haven’t tried the food yet but plan on doing so.

A great pub by the park with lovely staff and a good room for private hire. It’s dog friendly, shows sport sometimes and serves food, including veg and vegan options. The only negative about the Star is their toilets which seems like an odd thing to say but when you’re a regular, it is annoying that they’re often smelly.

The staff are friendly, the drink is good, the food is actually quite impressive... Well done them... This is, sadly, another pub that reflects who spends their money there, and not the majority of locals. Back in the day you would find locals from a mixture of backgrounds and ethnicities, but now you find the 'new hackney': young, white, trousers too small, interesting facial hair. Which is fine. I mean hey, that's where the money is and it is a nice place that does decent drinks and very good food, albeit a bit pricey. They pitch it at peak 'good food for a price'. I just find it a little sad that Hackney is being slowly divided into two camps, 'up and coming' (The Star) and 'nowhere we can afford' (the locals). This is not the Star's fault though, just a commentary on the direction that our beloved city is headed in. I had a nice time here. I came for a pint after a footy game, both of which I enjoyed greatly, despite the price.

Absolutely fantastic pub. Had a great vegan roast and a pint, just by Hackney downs on a cool spring day. Perfect place to spend a chilled out Sunday. They also have bottomless brunch on Saturdays. Guess can spend the entire weekend here. Highly recommend.

We went as a group of 15 to hire the Gypsy room. It was a bit small for us and the staff very kindly arranged for us to use a table in the main pub as well. The room itself is a little bit the worse for wear (some broken chairs, bit damp) but absolutely fine for fewer people. We stayed for dinner and then back in the Gypsy room for karaoke which was on a very easy to use system. The food was excellent. The music in the main pub was a bit too loud for conversation but there is also plenty of outside space. The highlight of the whole booking was the staff who really went out of their way to look after us. I will definitely be back for food and karaoke again in the future!

I go here often, the pubs has had a refurb, nice seating area outside. It's great that dogs are allowed. My only criticism is the toilets,if you are tall getting into the loo is an issue, the doors are terrible and incredibly close and there's an underlying smell which isn't pleasant.

Don't be put off by the Google Street view photo - this pub has new owners and has had a complete refurbishment, at last there is a decent pub on Hackney Downs that is also dog friendly! Tiger beer on tap, if that's your thing, large outside decking area, plenty of late night music, also if that's your thing. Pizzas and Big Apple hot dogs are on the menu. Excellent!

We had our friends hen night in their upstairs function room, 'The Gypsy Room' And everything from start to finish was incredible! The staff couldn't have been more helpful if they tried! Mario, James and Jade were all so friendly and made us feel right at home. Great food and great cocktails too! I don't live anywhere near but I'd definitely make the trek from south London to visit again. Great pub and the best staff! You are all true stars of Hackney Downs!

Has potential... staff give the impression they’d rather be doing anything but working there and dealing with you. They tend to gravitate into their little huddle and getting their attention is a bit of a chore. But I have to say The ethos is great: management make a big effort with music and engage with the community. Just need to sort out the attitude and it would be an absolute gem.

Relaxed pub with some good beer. Don't be put off by the hyperbole on their web site - it is actually a good place. But they stopped serving rather early on the Wednesday that we were in, depriving us of a last pint, which was a shame.

Great for a drink (nice seating area outside, average London prices) but don't waste your time with the food - really really overpriced (£3.00 for a tiny thing of chips, £8.50 for a burger on it's own without anything too exciting on it) and you don't even get your own plate! We got served our two burgers on one weird metal tray which made it pretty hard to both eat at once without making a bit of a mess. Would come back for drinks, but not food.
