Reviews of The Vanbrugh
P. P.
Good size pub with garden. Using QR code you can order and pay at your table. The beer was good, but the Sunday roast not so much. The vegetables were undercooked and the Yorkshire pudding still half cold as I presume it came from the freezer...
S. H.
Really cool back garden area. Food was good, service was friendly. Nothing to complain about!
The chicken burger was very good. Not mince, white meat. The mushroom meatballs were new to me and had a great tomato sauce.

One of the best Sunday roasts in Greenwich. The pork belly was crispy and tender. The gravy was plenty and delicious and the potatoes and root vegetables cooked to perfection. The staff was very friendly and the ambience was very warm.

Walked past a few times and had always meant to go in. Went for Saturday lunch. Great selection of beers and bottled cider. Ended up having a three course meal. Starter: halloumi. Main: veggie goats cheese pie and vegan burger (with cheese). Dessert: apple and berry crumble. Very impressed with a good selection of vegetarian and vegan food which is refreshing to see, especially in a pub off the beaten track! Atmosphere was very relaxed and was plenty of room, even with the football on the screens it still felt like a quiet pub. Would very much recomend for food and drink and to avoid the bustle of Greenwich Town. Also prices are respectable with 2 mains and the starter less than £30

A very pleasant intimate pub. Trendy grey on the outside, smart trad on the inside with a lovely garden area. The Vanbrugh brew is a good beer; I had this with the delicious fishcake (in a super sauce). Service is earnest and friendly!

This has been my local pub for 9 years now, so I've seen it go through quite a lot of change. It's in a great location, has a big outdoor space, and is running some good events now - like Movie Mondays, half price food Tuesdays, etc. The food is fairly average, nothing special.
They used to have a decent selection of craft beers, but have really scaled it back during Covid to the usual array of naff beers. Hopefully they will increase the selection again soon. Some other pubs in the area offer a much better beer selection - e.g. The Crown just down the road.

We arrived with great expectations to this place after all the reviews read here. Should not have to... Our orders have been forgotten and had to wait an hour. But at least a round of drinks was offered. When the food finally arrived it looked great, but the taste was less than average. I have tasted much better Sunday roasts. The red cabbage was great, but that's all the positive. I do not have much expectation for a yorkshire pudding, but it was flat, soft and unsalty. The three miserable carrots and the four soft potatoes could not compensate. The thin slice beef was Ok. I will revisit after a while to see whether it was a one-off, but at this time I cannot recommend it.

Great garden space! Quality service and the food is decent. One of the best for pint in the area as it is less well know outside of Greenwich

Lovely pub with a lovely tented outside area . Food was excellent. Staff friendly & helpful would definitely recommend.

Visited The Vanbrugh last Friday and coming back this Friday! Fantastic service- excellent food and great vibes! Ross was very helpful on the phone while I was booking a table and during dinner. You can spot on straight away that every single member of staff does ‘an extra mile’ to pleased the customer. Very much recommend it!

A pretty good pub in Greenwich to watch some sport and enjoy a good craft beer. There’s one main rotating keg line as well as standard lines. There’s also a few cask taps. The only thing that could be improved are the sears in the back area which are well and truly past it.
D. D.
Nice environment, family friendly before 7pm, fair variety of beers, large "covered outside" area, pet friendly.
R. T.
Needed beer, had beer. Served its purpose.
Oh also, they have an amazing beer garden. Best in Greenwich by a country mile.

As a number of our family live in Kent and South London, we celebrated my husband's 80th birthday at The Vanbrugh instead of in Oxfordshire where we live.
We were made very welcome by Joanna and her staff. An area had been set up for us under the large awning at the end of the garden with side tables for the food, cutlery, plates, glasses and wine which we ordered from the bar. We appreciated the jugs of iced water too. The staff were very attentive, checking on when to serve and clear the food and carrying drinks out to our guests.. They opened a tab for us behind the bar and warned us when it was running low. The buffet was imaginative and delicious, with most guests going back for seconds (and thirds!). We had parties at The Vanbrugh for my husband's 70th birthday and our Golden Wedding, and hope to celebrate my 80th, our Diamond Wedding and my husband's 90th there too! Of course, it is not just for old people - it is an excellent venue for an 18th or 21st birthday party and any age in between
N. K.
Quick, friendly service (Alex), jolly atmosphere, good food, sit in the dining area at the side if you prefer quiet.
C. W.
One of my favourite pubs in London. Fantastic seating, Sunday roast was incredible (thanks for the vegan option). Staff were friendly and there was a really relaxed vibe!
A. A. H.
Little gem in Maze Hill and Westcombe Park area. Serving very good Sunday roast and very friendly staff. Make sure you book ahead always fully booked over the weekend
N. G.
Pricey, food tasty but not enough vegetables and too much carb, roast potatoes and huge Yorkshire pud. Who is going to reverse the trend of offering too much carb? 🤔
B. H.
OK so the 3 stars are mainly for the décor and the fact I was in great company. The service was super quick, which is good because they are strict about keeping customers to our (short) booked time slots. Also for some reason they though outr booking time was 15 minutes earlier than it was - how does this happen in the world of automated online booking?
On the food side, the speed was slightly at the expense of a comfortable experience. The burger was a good size and seasoned, but slightly on the grey and tough side. Average chips.
J. B.
Met up with some friends here after what was said to be a sunny day, which turned out to be a wet one. But the outdoor canopy in the garden was our savior! Really great vibe, good menu too.
We saw a mixture of a few family's with kids and then groups of young adults.
During covid restrictions the place is well sign posted, loads of hand disinfectant.
Staff are really friendly and always about if you need anything.
E. G.
Very nice big pub on the river. I have been also to special events and it was good fun
D. C.
Friendly Staff, Dog Welcoming, Great Food, Lovely Beer..... what's stopping you visiting?
M. S.
Lovely food, great vegan burgers! This is a great local pub with a garden with seating and inside restaurant- the staff are always friendly and during lockdown you could still get your favourite bite to take away.
Good systems in place for current COVID restrictions including online ordering/payment which doesn’t require you to download an app (I am impressed they went this way) instead of having another app you only use occasionally. Dog friendly and great range of beers on tap.
P. G.
Excellent food, great atmosphere fantastic bar staff. The best pub in the world.
R. F.
This is one of my favourite pubs. The staff are so helpful and extremely friendly, the food is delicious. It’s the only pub I have been to where they are taking the covid precautions seriously. My family and I felt very safe. Great pub, thanks for another lovely experience and tasty food x
B. B.
Such a great pub with fantastic staff & service. Only downside was the cheeseburger didn`t taste of anything.. Would expect more for £14.
L. X.
Absolutely brilliant! There were a bunch of muggy boys there but the staff were incredible, it was warm, drinks were quick. Im gutted i didnt get the name of the gentleman assisting us as he was so lovely and professional especially considering how drunk everyone was!
R. E.
Initial impressions are of a small cosy hole in the wall type place, ideally placed just outside the train station for a 'swift one' on the way home. However, on entering, you quickly realise that it's been extended out the back with a very welcoming restaurant area serving excellent food. You then realise that there is a sizable beer garden beyond that with a live sports screen, heaters, lots of tables, under an impressive all weather covering providing a beautiful outdoor space.
Great staff, great food, and surprisingly large TARDIS like space. Great pub!!!
D. J.
Lovely place, in different kind of rooms! Lovely staff! Be here, love it! ❤️
C. P.
This place is awesome! I just had the best burger ever and in a post-covid world, they are doing everything they need to to keep everyone safe. The staff are lovely, the food great, the beer garden beautiful- what more could you want?!
J. D.
This is a great local with an excellent selection of beers, with crafts regularly on rotation. The food is excellent too, and definitely check out the Foodie Tuesdays for half price.
I’d love to give this place a five- star review, but the toilets really let it down. The inside and garden are a perfect place to relax, eat and drink, catch up with friends and enjoy a quiz, but the toilets are like poor, outdated club toilets. The kind of place they remove the toilet seats to discourage drug use. Completely out of place.
Z. Z. (.
Really enjoyed this spot! Kids and pets friendly with a great garden in the back. The brew selection is awesome the staff genuine and very welcoming. Tried quite a few of the starters and every single one was in point. The Buffalo wings were definitely a winner though! I really wish this was my local. Will most certainly visit again in the near future
L. V.
Good food with generous portions and on tap beers. They have done up the beer garden to be mostly covered and it looks great
J. E.
Great lace. Food good. Staff friendly too.
T. T.
Great staff, friendly and accommodating. We ordered via QR codes and paid online for our food and drinks. My friends had the Sunday roast chicken and fish and chips and it looked amazing. I had the lamb out roast vegetables and it also delicious. The service was lightening quick and our food arrived in no time. Visit the Vanburgh if you're in the area, highly recommended.
J. B.
Really nice and comfortable pub. Good choice of beers on tap as well as having a good canned crazy selection too. Outside space was really nice, whole venue was clean and had live sport on that suited us. Need to try their food. Men's toilet was dated
M. C.
Worked up in the area recently, used this lovely pub in the evenings. Great, friendly service. Lovely food and a great atmosphere. Clean, suprisingly larger than you think. I have no doubt i shall be visiting there on my return.
M.
Lovely environment, the staff are extremely friendly and the food was great and the drinks too!
R. F.
Lovely pub and really sensibly brought back into operation. Felt safe and everyone else was sensible too. Thanks for a great meal and my first pint out since February
D. J.
What a great pub!!!!. I'm so sorry we were so rowdy. It was lockdown cabin fever I think ... You handled our behaviour with such grace and kindness. Thank you, you lovely people xxxxx ♥️
P. P.
Good food, friendly staff and decently priced.
I have been many times there and have been always satisfied. Not long ago organized a birthday party and all went smooth as silk. I will keep on going to this pub.
Nearly forgot! Great garden - ideal if you have little ones with you.
K. R.
Lovely local with friendly staff and delicious food. We were new to the area and had just been to look at a house, having this pub right around the corner definitely helped seal the deal for us!
J. H.
I have visited this pub a couple of times before and it was good. Nice atmosphere and reasonable food. But in these Covid times unfortunately the shine seems to have come off. Food was mediocre and service patchy. Hopefully they'll get their mojo back when things return to normal.
J. B. (. P.
Nice place. Went as a party of 6. Service was good. Food was OK.
C. W.
Great COVID precautions. Full Contactless ordering. Drinks are dropped off at collection point. One way system (separate exit point). Booking online.
The staff are friendly and take great responsibility firmly in everyone’s safety. The drinks are lovely as usual as well.
Have been back almost every week since re-opening and it has felt the safest of all the places.
C. T.
Good food, great service. Nice garden at the back where you can eat outside. They let us take our cycles in and leave them at the back which was fantastic. Fish and chips were good but the lamb was a bit tough. Would recommend to anyone in the area that want as nice pub lunch.
G. S.
The Vanbrugh is a true neighborhood gem with all of the perks. The space has fully outdoors, semi-outdoors, indoors with tons of windows and full bar areas - so no matter what you like in a pub, it's all there. The changing menu and great specials are solidly flavorful. This month, it's a chili shrimps salad with fruit, and a seabass special yesterday. Moreover, instead of carrying simply the same 6 beers that every other pub carries, the Vanbrugh carries actual craft beers from specialty breweries: Alphabet brewing company (Phat white), Fierce Brewing company (Moose Moose), and others which change frequently. Finally, the staff are just wonderful! Welcoming, kind and engaging. You'll love the Vanbrugh.
A. M.
Its got a choice of indoors or outdoors, and both are sublime. The new tent out back with glass fire heaters is awesome; and as always the staff are stellar. What are you waiting for?!
M. P.
Lovely atmosphere, great food at reasonable prices, generous portions. Friendly, helpful staff.
S. M.
Great pub, good food, nice beer and wine selection. Shame about the bloody football on that nobody seemed to be watching! Actually was able to get away from it by heading to the rear area away from the screens which was nice so could be amongst other civilised drinkers for a quieter pint! Looking forward to the warmer weather so the nice little garden area is available again, subject to planning permission being overturned for the unnecessary set of more two bed flats.....
S. H.
Lovely family pub tucked away in the residential streets of Westcombe Park. Always something going on there and keeping it fresh with themes throughout the year. Good place to watch sports and there is a cool beer garden. Friendly local atmosphere.
B. N.
This is a lovely little pub tucked away with yoga on Saturdays and lots of family oriented events throughout the summer. Cute beer garden and a quietish restaurant. Drinks are great, however there was a change in chef last year and the food quality has not been the same since. The food used to be amazing, now it isn't quite the same and is a little more standard.
Add some inventiveness to the menu for another star!
The sport on the TV can sometimes draw a noisey crowd who don't always get along with regulars.
V. C.
Speaking purely from a drinks point of view, this pub is definitely a great. I love the garden and all the visiting pups. It is a lovely experience to actually be able to find a table in a pub garden these days.
M. L.
A great local with very good food. Serves a lot of different functions for the people in the area: it can be the perfect place for a quiet pint, or to watch the game or to take the kids for lunch (although doesn't always allow for all at the same time). Always a good selection of great beers on tap.
E. A.
A pub that doesn't look like anything special from outside, but, once past the bar, a new customer will be pleasantly surprised at how big this place actually is - with a restaurant area and an extension which honestly feels like a conservatory which both lead out to a good sized beer garden, it's a nice place to relax in and enjoy good food and drink; as it's a little way from the main road, I would not have known about this place were it not for a couple of locals who were celebrating there and we complimented their choice of venue!
v. L.
Great food, great choice of drinks, lovely staff with a lovely atmosphere. Dog friendly, family friendly and just friendly in general.
They do craft beer festivals & bbqs in the summer & yoga on sunday mornings (i think, could be saturday) Our favourite pub in & around Greenwich.
M. R.
Amazing staff, solid food, good beer.... Even better garden. Lovely little back street boozer... which isn't that little when you go inside.
K.
Fantastic little place, food was beautiful, super friendly staff. Would absolutely visit again!
B. S.
Local pub with two outdoor spaces. One is a garden with lovely big trees and a fake grass terrace, which is nicer than it sounds. The other, covered outside space is more for smokers which I guess is nice for smokers in winter.
Wine was alright, I had the Pinot noir which was their most expensive by the glass and it had the usual London price tag. Staff were nice enough and overall is had a friendly, local vibe.
E. N.
Nice pub & bar, with good selection of drinks and (pub) food and a large beautiful outdoors garden seating area.
The service is always good :)
M. Á. G.
The back garden at this place is amazing! Perfect place to have a drink and a chat. Dogs are welcome and very much appreciated! Food is also very yummy and good portions. Staff is friendly and welcoming
J. D.
Great Customer service! Food tasted amazing Will Revisit. The beautiful chilled out the garden area. Also Kudos to the chefs A+++++
A. M. P.
The atmosphere, service and food are excellent, but ordering is a bit of hassle: 4 out of 5 times has to be repetead, as the app keeps malfunctioning.
S. D.
utMy wife and I go there every week to sort out family affairs. It's been modernised and feels cozy. The staff are great. Nice garden with little ones to run about (no play ground). Has a restaurant with good food, reasonably priced (chicken wings appetisers is around £5.50 if I Rember correctly). Beer is good. Has sports on multiple TV. The only thing for us it would be great to add bar food selection to the menu, like they used to have tortillas with melted cheese and salsa and sour cream, but it's not an issue as we just get the appetisers each week. Something we're not keen about is dogs are allowed.
F. L.
Great local pub tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood. Good selection of beers with guest kegs rotating in regularly. Excellent food and a terrific garden. Proud to call this pub my local, simply can't be beat.
C. M.
A wonderfully intimate venue where we had a baby shower in the private venue :) great food!
R. G.
Friendly staff and tasty Sunday roast
M. M.
Watched an England rugby international here and it was very busy during the match, however we were served our drinks quickly and the beer selection was excellent. After the match we ate and the food was excellent.
J. D.
Love this cosy place and would say it is one of the best pubs in Greenwich. Have always had friendly service and the food, which is pub food after all, is top notch in its category. For a French person to say anything nice about British food must mean something! :)
J. K.
Went because it has a big beer garden. Unfortunately you can't enjoy the sun because the whole garden is covered.
S. E.
Simply great atmosphere, professional staff and super delicious food . Family friendly but in the evenings you can get a really nice party atmosphere with good music and varied and affordable drinks menu ;)
M. D.
It's our local pub and it's excellent for a drink in the way home. On tuesdays food is half price and the burgers are excellent. Good to take or friends and family as well. Good music, very relaxed environment. Marta.
l. h.
Lovely outside space, fish and chips wonderful! Light crisp batter and fresh fish, good choice of drinks and good wine.
F. S.
Really nice Local pub, the food is tasty but you need be a meat eater the hamburger are big and served with class. The garden is well kept and the staff is friendly. It was my local and I miss it!
B. P.
The Vanbrugh is the perfect local pub for Maze Hill residents. They remodeled last year and significantly expanded the garden, so there's plenty of outdoor seating. They have great Meantime beer on tap. The food is much better than standard pub fare, and there's a rather cheap lunch deal. The place has Wi-Fi. Highly recommended.
N. P.
Popped in for a Sunday roast today. It wasn't particularly busy but service was poor. Meal took over 45 mins to come out. With 10 mins apart between different persons instead of all together. Not once did the waitress ask to take a drinks order. Saying that the food is good, but service really let it down
T. W.
Great friendly pub with good food. Excellent covid safety measures and a warm, covered outdoor area
N. D.
Great pub. Great drinks. Great people. Great food. Great music. Great garden. Great tent to keep us warm too.
J. M.
We stayed in Greenwich on our London trip and loved the bar here. Didn't have any food, but we hung out on the outdoor patio in the back. A great spot, even in rainy weather (it's covered).
J. S.
An absolutely fantastic traditional pub with large garden. Amazing food, friendly staff and an array of drinks. Go there!
m. l.
Friendly local pub kinda hard to find which ensures less tourists. Friendly staff, good food for reasonable prices. Good way of getting to know locals, if one is chatty, like me.
L. D.
One of the best pubs in Greenwich. Great vegan options and menu always changing to keep it interesting.
J. K.
Lovely Pub tucked away from the busy roads, lovely indoor decor and Beer Garden, tidy and welcoming. Pub Dog cute and friendly, went there for the Sunday Roast and was not disappointed. <3
I. e.
Lovely Sunday afternoon there today. Food was delicious and service spot on. Worth arriving early before it gets busy to get the best of the place. Definitely my favourite roast In south London.
W. R.
Really nice pub. Service was awesome
D. M.
Nice pub, nice staff.
G. B.
Lovely decor, good food, good playlist. We sat under the canopy outside which was perfect on a warm but rainy day
M. S.
Nice pub, but service is slow, and the app doesn'r work mkst od the time.
P. W.
The Vanbrugh used to be my local and was a regular haunt until about 10 years ago, and I still pop in about once or twice a month if I get off a station early on my way back to Westcombe Park. It's still a cracking little pub, and does some excellent food, and a good selection of beers. Service is almost without fail friendly and welcoming.
I just wish they had more power sockets for when I pop in with a laptop - several times I've left earlier than I wished simply because I was running out of battery.
J. D.
Great local pub, staff is friendly, good selection of beer. Fish and chips was quite good also!
M. A.
Good food and selection of beers. We had fun at the Monday night quiz. Only let down was the slow service at the bar, one guy serving when it was quite busy with the football also on the tv.
L. K.
Nice pub with good food. There's an outdoor bit and even a video games console for kids... The beer selection is a bit light and citrussy. Guys, you could use a solid bitter or ale or something!
M. O.
Fantastic local, great beer, it has a good garden out back, it's just a shame they got rid of the games that used to be out there.
D. M.
Fantastic roast and good beer. Beautiful covered layout in the rear.
T. A.
A great roast and their pub garden was really nice, handled COVID restrictions really well.
A. C.
Beautiful local pub with spacious garden!

Fantastic pub in Greenwich, a hidden gem with good ale and food available all day. Great atmosphere away from the bustle of Centre
C. C.
A local gem. Lovely food, friendly staff and laid back surroundings. It's tucked away a bit but well worth a detour.
F. J. O.
Nicest fish and chips we’ve had and staff were more than accommodating. Loved it
H. B.
Just been and had a Sunday roast. Absolutely delicious and incredibly reasonable pricing.
F. H.
I really love coming to this place. It is in fact nothing too fancy or unique, but there is just a really nice atmosphere that makes it a very special place. The staff are always so sweet and friendly that make you want to spend your whole day there.
M. B.
Lovely large pub in Greenwich, which has a massive beer garden, occasionally they have live bands, there is a restaurant section in the pub, the food is lovely and the bar staff are friendly
T. L.
Great place wonderful food good vegetarian options friendly staff good service. Just wish there is a better option for larger. And could do with a wheelchair accessible toilet.
L. P.
Lovely pub. It's been extensively extended and it's now an interesting building with pleasant outside seating area. Good food and bbq's.
C. G. D. S.
Very nice pub with a few sections to it, football on the TV but in a very comfy environment, like going to watch at a friend's house, large beer garden, food is delicious.
S. A.
Good food at a good price.
Great drink selection, a little on the expensive side.
Lovely indoor space, not keen on the artificial grass garden though!
J. B.

Great hidden pub with lovely child-proof back garden. The food was great and had a great time there.

I used to live here 10 years ago and this was my local. I am very happy to see that it is still the same pub with enhancements to the garden. A great local booza
C. C.
Place is good but just a little bit missing to make it amazing. Good drinks selection, atmosphere and staff are great.
Food could be better......

Perfect for a quick stop on the way home, friendly staff, good food and great beer. And the Cajun chips along with the spicy chicken wings are to die for.
