Reviews of The Virgin Queen
S. H.
Such a wonderful atmosphere, exactly what you look for in a local pub! They are part of a group that own some other equally great local pubs like The Royal Inn on the Park, Approach Tavern etc.
Great selection of beers and drinks, great service and cosy decor with a fireplace for the colder days. There is a great conservatory outside that is indoor/ outdoor depending on the season.
They also serve food, fish dishes are the ones to order!
There is also a lower ground floor with darts board and snooker table to keep entertained.
A. C.
Great small pub , very nice customer service. Lovely food , I need to send special recommendation for kitchen chef Rocky, his salad was absolutely delicious, great attention to details and full of taste. Dining area nice and quiet and garden outside for beer and conversations. Lovely place to spend time.
a. b.
Best Sunday Roast I ever had in London. The staff is very welcoming and the fireplace add some magic!
Will definitely go back!
G. C.
Super cosy and quaint pub just off Broadway Market. A perfect place to go to avoid the hustle of the market with a good selection of drinks and a games room!
S. J.
This is my new favourite boozer. The staff were so great, the decor is lovely, fish & chips are the best I've had in a pub for a long while, the quiz was fun and I have to say it again, the staff are genuinely warm and kind people.
G. W.
A splendid pub that combines old-world charm and new-era customer service. Great draught beer and what knowledgeable staff. The wine list is excellent too.
S. V.
This was the first dinner out we had post-lockdown and it was superb! Had some fish and chips, with very good cod in a crunchy batter, the mushy peas with mint were 10/10 and I really appreciated the generous serving of tartar sauce (most restaurants skimp on it and I find it so annoying!)! It was a rainy day but inside we were so cosy and warm, while all safety guidelines were observed! Definitely will be back soon
S. A.
Found the Virgin Queen by chance and it was a nice surprise to find a real fire and wood panel interior. Good choice of beers, but cider selection was little small.
R. R.
Absolute belter of a pub - beautiful wood decor, real fire and a games room downstairs (pool, darts and board games)
Plus the food is great with amazing vegan options (highly recommend the vegan fish (tofu) and chips)
C. H.
Great spot. Had an afternoon pint after the Market. Open fire & mulled cider! Lovely pint of Ipa also
T. W.
Great pub, fantastic service!
S. C.
Lovely pub. Will be our rebut after choir on Tuesdays. Great beer.
N. H.
Big fan of the pub quiz on Wednesdays. Two very different rounds of eclectic knowledge. All situated in a cosy dark wood clad pub.
Pool and darks downstairs also.
D. W.
Quaint pub in Hackney. Friendly staff. Part of the “Remarkable Pubs” brand. Recommended in Restaurant Guru 2019! Is most well known for its range of Craft Beer as well as its Fish and Chips. Dog friendly pub. Stone’s throw from Hackney City Farm.
C. H.
GREAT fish and chips (particularly the chips) in a perfect London pub. This is the ideal Sunday pub, with a excellent food menu and friendly staff.
E. C.
My girlfriend and I fell in love with this place. We're local to this area and we've finally managed to find our 'local pub'. The staff are amazing and accommodative, the food is wonderful and so is the vibe and ambiance. I definitely recommend this place!!
M. F.
The best fish and chips! This is a classic East London boozer updated with really great food. Affordable too. I’m a fish and chip aficionado and this was some of the best I’ve had for a long time. It used to be a grimy but loveable football pub — it’s nestled in the less gentrified estates down past the less hipsterised end of Broadway Market and retains a proper London vibe. Friendly staff, great selection of drinks too. And a great name for a pub too, I think.
J. B.
Great little pub with a lot of atmosphere, good food, friendly staff.
K. E.
Congratulations to the new management. Have absolutely smashed it. My family and I have eaten here today & had a Sunday roast, hats off to the chef because it was absolutely beautiful.
He even went above & beyond & made me a gluten free Yorkshire pudding.
The starters were delightful, we had prawns, mussels and also a crab bisque. Then onto a beautiful roast beef which was out of this world.. & chip shop roast potatoes 😍
The trip over from west London was definitely worth it & I’ll be back again in a couple of weeks.
M. W.
Good local pub. I went during the first week of operation and while they were still working on getting things perfect, I really enjoyed the friendly service and the really good fish and chips.
M. D.
Exactly the great fish and chips you'd expect, given the pub's classic look.
A. T.
My favourite pub in the area. It’s never too crowed, but often filled with friendly locals and usually some dogs. The ambiance is great— the pub has an ornate wood-carved interior and real fireplace, and it also has an outdoor enclosed patio, which I tend to prefer.
Fish and chips here are delicious, and they offer many choices of fish. Always an interesting set of local beers on tap, and friendly staff who aren’t so overwhelmed they don’t have time to talk to you.
C. S.
A great pub and one of the best fish and chip restaurants around. Good selection of beers and wines. Fish can be served fried in crunchy batter or grill without. Chunky chips and mushy peas complete the meal, delicious. Great staff, very friendly and accommodating, highly recommended.
A. J.
Impromptu Tuesday night visit and it was excellent. Beer selection was decent and very reasonably priced (£5.50 for Hepcat is about right). We wasn't going to eat but the menu tempted us with the sharing plate. A good portion turned up and it was very tasty, certainly worth the £10. We have promised ourselves to return one evening to try the full menu. Staff were also lovely and couldn't have done any more. Will be returning.
H. N.
Best Pub in the East End
A. L.
Lovely refurb pub, great service great food. Loved it.
P. B.
We keep returning to this pub for dinner. The haddock and chips are highly recommended! The sides are large, so we usually split one mushy peas between four people. The fish pie is also good, as are the fish tacos. The covered patio dining space is great in good weather, and the tables close to the fireplace are very cosy in winter.
They also have a selection of some of the best local craft beers.
J. C.
Beautifully refurbished Tudor style, intricately carved woodwork. Comfortable and warm with an open fire in the winter. Fine fish based food. Effervescent manageress and friendly bar staff. Esoteric jukebox with good non intrusive sound. Highly recommended break from the applied trendiness of Broadway Market
J. H.
It's a pub, but with a strong fish and chips theme. Most people seemed to be eating but there were a few at the bar just here for drinks.
Had the vegan fish and chips here, which they make with banana blossom. Texture is a bit like artichoke. Maybe takes a bit of getting used to. They also had deep fried halloumi in batter as a starter which was more familiar territory and I think I preferred.
K. H.
The Virgin Queen is a lovely East London pub with a great fish menu. I have been here a few times and always found the staff and management to be warm and inviting. There is a lovely conservatory so you can enjoy the sunshine regardless of the outside temperature. I would recommend the seafood platter as a light bite or add chips and make a meal of it. One of my very few five star places.
M. Y.
Great local pub. Always worth a visit when in that part of town. Friendly staff and good service.
P. C.
Cozy place and best bloody mary I’ve ever tried!!
T. S.
Great atmosphere, had a wonderful new years eve here, the staff were very cheerful and there was a very friendly vibe in the place. They have a selection of real ales. This is a very cosy, traditional pub that specialises in fish meals, I've not eaten there but people tell me it's awesome.
B. A.
Wanted to check this place out after the refurbishment and had an excellent evening. The cod and chips were REALLY good, delicious fish and fantastic chips. Selection of beers also excellent and very friendly staff. Glad to have found a new local.
T. B.
This was our favorite pub when we traveled through London, and we tried a fair number. The feel is relaxed, and aesthetic is a warm woodsy feel, and they were very dog friendly which we enjoyed. The beer was cold, and the board games free to the public. There was even an outdoor area.
Edit: Back in London, and grabbed a pint. Wish I hadn't. The bartender is sick as a dog, coughing in his hand while serving. That's enough to put me off.
C. O.
Love this wee gem just off Broadway Market. Great pints and service, good selection of board games. Dog friendly. Awesome food. And very cosy by the fireplace. What more could you want!
C. L.
Really love this place what a job in turning it into such a lovely pub . The woodwork all over the walls and bar are so beautiful I’ve never seen anything like it.
The staff are great and the managers Liam and Toby really know their beers and happy to chat to you about them. Fish and chips are really yummy too.
So much better than the Albion . A proper pub :)
V. I.
A hidden gem of East London. The woodwork on the walls has beautiful details. Friendly staff that give a local feeling. Jukebox and a game room with a pinball machine are great additions. Delicious fish based menu and good selection of beer, it feels like a 3 in one (pub, restaurant, game room). I will go again.
M. W.
Went for the fish & chips - bang on. Great looking pub inside with fire & a decent games room out back. Beer choice ok - not best kept Pride / Hophead I've ever had, but visiting between Xmas so maybe not freshest - fair enough.
D. C. S.
Amazing fish and chips. They also do a vegan version with platano which is sick. Lovely staff. Nice beer selection. Absolutely recommended
s. E.
Excellent starters tasted everything prawns. Bisque and moules all excellent roast beef and pork really good all in all a nice pleasant Sunday lunch friendly staff and great background music
J. B.
The people who run this pub are the same as who brought us other Bethnal Green and east London favourite haunts such as The Approach Tavern on Approach Road and the royal inn on the park. Of the three in the group that I’m familiar with this is my favourite. It’s got that small village look and feel, complete with round , floor to ceiling front door curtain to keep gusts of winter winds out and a coal fire - it’s cosy. Only a few seats indoors, but they have a sheltered terrace / conservatory. The fish and chips are good - a tad on the expensive side for fish and chips but I was full up and satisfied and very happy after my meal. They change their beers fairly regularly and have Beers of Intrigue which are often small batch craft delights from local breweries. Wifi is available so I’ve even had a cheeky pint whilst doing a spot of work here on an afternoon. All round a good pub. I’d come here again and bring friends.
M. C. (. D.
The owner of this pub is a local chap who owns a couple of other pubs in the area. I didn’t eat but there were lots of other people were eating. I had a pint of Livotel which the barman told me is imported especially. Good luck. Nice to have an alternative pub to Broadway Market.
B. W.
Super lovely staff, nice beer. Really enjoyed the seafood platter. They are thoughtful and considerate to our baby and patient when I spilled a pint all over the floor!
P. N.
Great small pub, good atmosphere. Really good fresh fish and chips. Small selection of beer, but got the bases covered.
B. C.
Nice addition to the area. Didn't mind the Albion but it was a very footbally pub and not somewhere I would have usually gone for a quiet pint. Had a couple of the 'Beers of Interest' and some chips. Pretty good, will definitely be back. Fireplace was lovely - if the chairs were a bit cosier I think I'd never leave.
C. H.
This place has a very nice atmosphere and is a good escape from Broadway market. Good beers on tap as well!
Be careful of the Brothers Grimm, the locals who love to buy shots, they can mess you right up
A. H.
What a find! The last time my friend brought me to this area there was a dingy old mans pub on this spot, not any more. In its place is now a traditional yet contemporary good old London boozer. Posh fish’n chips, great choice of sounds & knowledgable friendly staff. My other half quizzed the Manager on the beers, he certainly knew his stuff. Can’t wait to go back.
S. H.
Great beer. Friendly and helpful staff. If you want a quiet pint avoid quiz night. If you like the buzz of a proper local then this is the place.
O. G.
Great beers, great food, great landlord.
P. T.
Brilliant pub. Lovely warm atmosphere and welcome and really good service. Just what was needed on a wet November evening.
D. B.
Decent pub with some nice drinks. Bar staff are friendly.
j. w.
Lovely old east end boozer, modernised and serving great beer selection. Brilliant fish and chips provided by Fish House and serves kombucha too. What's not to like
A. A.
Beautiful pub with lots of designs detail. Good beers, very good fish and welcoming staff. Enjoyed the heated patio.
G. H.
Top beer and bar staff serving you. Great food (fish and chips). Cosy with the fire on, which was kept regularly stoked. Good stuff.
M. C. B.
Excellent food and drinks! Good quality of food, the best fish and chips in London!
A. P.
Great service and amazing food...
C.
Cute little pub with a covered & heated outdoor area on a quiet street. 🍺
G. N.
Random find while staying the area for work - it was ace! Good fish and chips, good beer, great atmosphere, friendly staff. And a clearly popular pub quiz in full swing.
R. S.
I visited the Virgin Queen last Thursday, and it has been beautifully restored and has a great ambience with an open fire. An excellent selection of beers and the fish and chips were delicious. I highly recommend a visit.
S. M.
For a quiet Monday night it was still great... a budding Mark Nopfler delivered smooth tunes and the bar staff couldn't have been friendlier. Five pionts and Frontier were part of my night... both chilled and well served.
B. M.
Friendly staff. F and Chips better than average for lunch. 13.50 for adult portion. Do leave the skin on the cod but fresh and tasty. Wallys and pickled onions big and sour. Beer a little pricey but the rent and refurb must cost a small fortune. They have to make money too. Real coal lit core makes place a walk in furnace. May not be your daily local but certainly a jem of a place for atmos.
D. B.
Very nice place with medieval decoration and an amazing fireplace. Along with the smooth lights a relaxing and cosy atmosphere is created. Also a big variety of beers.
E. H.
This is a lovely place - cosy and inviting.
I liked the upholstered pews which are very comfortable. The Tudor design looks and feels completely original. I asked the barman what the faint fire smell was and he explained that the kitchen extractor fan was too powerful. The problem is solved now.
The food and drink was excellent and I don’t know where you can get a bottle of Muscadet wine for £ 14!
Compared to beer prices in nearby Broadway Market prices in the VQ are
lower. When I am in London I will make this pub my local.

Nice, fried and fried. At least they're honest about it and it's yum. Great location and the historic back ground... amazing. Well run by people who believe in their pub. Go!
A. B.
Amazing little pub just off Broadway Market. Great food and atmosphere with amazing bar staff. The perfect place for a chilled night beside the fire
S. A.
The girls at the bar seem bothered about us ( family with 2 little kids) coming in. Food thankfully was better. The place seem popular with drinks. Maybe not a family place but good to hang out with friends
C. W.
Beutiful decor inside and nice covered area outside!
G. O.
Great atmosphere. Friendly staff
L. H.
Good beer selection. Processo in champagne saucer isn't stead of a flute?
E. A. D.
Great classic pub, bit on the pricey side (£4 for mushy peas which you order as a side to your fish and chips, what's that about) but a cool spot to watch the rugby or have a pint
F. A.
What a lovely find. A local pub that serves excellent fish and chips and a great selection of beers. Will definitely go back!
G. M.
Good local craft beers selection and excellent fish and chips.
B. M.
Stylish, quiet and sleek little bar. Had a makeover recently, nice fish n chip shop at the back. No more garish TV screens 🙏

F. W.
Amazing!! The Sunday Roast is fantastic with 4 diferent choices.

The chefs made a roast for our doggie! Unfortunately the vegan option was a mush of overcooked veg (labelled as a nut roast) big disappointment but hey
L. L.
(Translated) Excellent fish and chips, with homemade fries! The beer is excellent and the house makes you taste it before choosing.
The terrace has a beautiful veranda with a sunroof - I would have gladly spent the afternoon there lazing around - the neighborhood is trendy (essential market, Saturdays).
Thank you thank you for the frankly nice welcome.
I'll be back !
(Original)
