Reviews of The Walrus And The Carpenter
C. (.
Great pint in a really popular place next to the monument!! lovely staff but it’s quite small inside, there is a little space outside which helps. No complaints 👍🏻
P. L. R.
Nice little city boozer with a big choice of ales and craft drinks. Open at weekends too, which is a bonus in this area.
R. T.
The food was delicious: try the game pudding or Mac n' cheese (with or without bacon). And the staff was really friendly.
Only complaint: if you offer bacon for Mac n' cheese, it is best if it is small, crispy pieces.
A. W.
Very nice and old pub. Actually one of the oldest. I love the interior. Very busy in afternoons but atmosphere and customer service is amazing. I really like this place 😍
B. M.
Busy pub close to Monument and Billingsgate Market. Despite the waves of people coming in the staff were really fast, friendly and efficient serving them so never had long to wait. Were sold out of a lot of the bar snacks but those we did have were very tasty. Will go back.
M. R.
Such a lovely place. I was just walking around when I discovered this place. I am not the type to go out but I will definitely try to come back as soon as possible. I also remember a friendly and funny employee named Mihaela. She made our night so nice. 10 out of 10. Great food, amazing staff, good atmosphere. I recommend it!!!
f.
Fabulous pub. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating right on Monument. Quick and friendly service.
A. S.
Great, traditional pub in the City. I'm fairly regular here and have brought different friends. I organised an office drinks night here too. Well looked after, good service and friendly staff. Worth a visit.
D. T.
A bustling friendly pub just down the hill from Monument. Busy on a Wednesday afternoon. A most enjoyable pint. The staff are great, welcoming and knowledgeable. This is certainly a pub worth a visit and offers all sorts of treats for the dedicated drinker. I'm not too sure what the connection with Lewis Carrol is other than the pub being named after the poem from through the looking glass, maybe a rabbit lives here, it's too dry for walrus's methinks. Anyway, a lovely pub.
O. T.
This is a nice traditional british pub, the food is excellent and the beer they pour is outstanding!
r. a.
Nice cheeseburger and a great selection of Ales.
Could do with some better glassware. I had a double sloe gin and Lemon tonic for £11.20.
I asked for a gin balloon but they said they only have one and it didn't fit in the dishwasher.
R. C.
Pub is warm and inviting, lovely atmosphere. Fantastic staff who are friendly and helpful.
Would highly recommend a visit.
S. G.
Stumbled across your pub by accident, what a cozy little pub! Nice food, tasty drinks and the staff were more than accommodating seeing as we did not have a reservation. We had a lovely time, and will try to pop in again whenever we next venture into London
S. H.
A classic English pub downstairs with outdoor seating and great people watching. Just off busy street and a block from London fire monument. Upstairs is the higher end Lewis Carrol dining room which is really charming and full of natural light. Elevated traditional pub food was delicious.
H. N.
Great traditional british dished with an amazing view of the monument, the shard and the sky garden. Very large selection of gins as well and very well priced, served in magnificent crystal glasses
M. P.
Absolutely lovely pub, atmosphere was wonderful and the food was delicious! Not to mention the alcohol!!! I'm definitely coming back and bringing friends!
D.
Great pint of Doom bar, also great selection of drinks.
M. C.
I always enjoy visiting this pub. Traditional London feel. Well kept beers. Food good too.
E. L.
Excellent food and within a short jaunt of the Tower of London. My husband and I really enjoyed the food in London and this place stood out. I almost would have liked a stronger Alice in Wonderland theme, but otherwise no complaints. It was also a lovely day so we enjoyed sitting outside at one of the tables there.
D. S.
Great corner location, opposite Old Billingsgate Market and a stones-throw from The Monument.
The outside pavement area is a real sun trap and can attract big crowds of ‘suits’ on weekday lunchtimes and after work. Much quieter at the weekend.
The inside is a mixture of wood panelling and very large windows - lovely natural light. Very good selection of well-kept ales and craft beers; served by generally friendly staff.
Would recommend, unless you see a huge crowd outside - only because it’s difficult to get served and the staff get a little frazzled!
G.
Great pub grub and brews! Very cute, Alice in Wonderland themed pub with many beers and ciders on tap. Their mac and cheese and their meat pies are delicious. The wait staff were very friendly and accommodating. It's a great lunch spot.
J. V. P. H.
We purposely seeked out this place for the meat pies and were not disappointed. We ordered the duck pie and fish n chips..both were very tasty!
B. L.
The new seating outside is a welcome addition - this is one of the few places that you can make the most of any British sun in the City
M. S.
We booked 2 tables for a large post exam group. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and tolerant of a group of noisy guides!
My burger and chips were solid effort by kitchen.
P. C.
Great atmosphere and friendly service.
C. M.
Really nice , chatted to staff and other drinkers, nice atmosphere and beer.
L. D.
Lovely pub with an excellent gin selection and friendly staff 😊
L. K.
Beautiful pub, Landlord Jim is super nice!
R. G.
Nice pub with good selection of beers ( and other drinks). Sat outside on pavement in view Monument.
U. G.
Let me charge my scooter. Staff were so sound and helpful. Great place
H. L.
It’s a decent pub. Built for quantity with some mates. Nice big courtyard to gather in and a good view of the Shard building.
A. O.
Wonderful pub in the heart of the city. The staff were more than accommodating and helpful. The food was delicious and with good portions. I would highly recommend if you are in the area. I will be returning on my next trip up to London.
L. J.
Amazing hidden gem, loved the game pie!
P. F.
Great pub, great food! Friendly staff too.
L. L.
Incredible range of gins and the pies are amazing. The team is very helpful and friendly, and they are knowledgeable about both the food and the drink menu. Nice place to lay back and relax after work; it does tend to get a bit busy occasionally but that just adds to the atmosphere.
R. F.
We had a private function here and the staff were amazing. So professional and helpful.
C. P.
Awesome pub, the pies are to die for and they have so many gins to choose from. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and even though it gets quite busy sometimes that just adds to the nice atmosphere. It was a nice experience, we will definitely be back next time we visit.
B. W.
Lovely pub and friendly staff
B. C.
Nice, friendly pub with excellent ales.
S. K.
What an incredible pub! Fantastic selection of ales and beer, not to mention the whiskey showcase they have at the moment! Would definitely recommend anyone to have a go at the whiskeys they have to offer right now. The staff are polite, charismatic and helpful. All around, amazing vibe! :)
A. T. G. T.
Brilliant pub! Atmosphere is great. Fun place to hang out and have a few with friends
V. C.
Beautiful place to rest, the girl staff was so kind and good food
G. H.
Most friendly & helpful staff I've met! Very knowledgeable on their gins and ales with a fantastic pie selection!!! We were amazed by the food, very tasty clearly prepared with a lot of love. Clean, buzzing atmosphere - perfect spot of lunch! One member even told us about a hidden spot in London called St Dunstan's in the East which was less than a 5 minute walk away, it was beautiful. After visiting the monument, a drink was definitely needed and we are so glad that we chose to go to the walrus! We will definitely be returning!!!
J. B.
Great traditional pub in the heart of the city
F. R.
Really gorgeous welcoming interior and decor. Friendly service.
Just a couple drawbacks. I came at about 3pm after visiting the Tower of London (note: within walking distance. You get thirsty after all that sightseeing! This is the perfect watering hole post-Tower.) There were only two tables occupied and neither of them were eating. I ordered a sausage sandwich and an ale. It took a half an hour to get my food. The chips were warm and crisp but the sausage and bread were quite dry. I'm sure it's better when they've got more guests, hence are more motivated.
Only other inconvenience is the tables and chairs are very high off the ground making it difficult for a short person to get comfortable.
The ambiance, the amazing bar and the setting more than make up for the shortcomings. Recommended!
J. D. T.
Had an amazing meal here and the staff was very friendly! If you need a quick place to grab a bite, then this place will serve you well.
M. M.
Good and friendly service. Very pleasant atmosphere. Good choice of beer. Reasonable prices. Loved this place! :)
M. M.
Great old school City pub.
L. C.
Bustling city pub with great service and excellent staff
J. H.
This place is amazing! We were at the monument on our way to tower of London and stopped for a quick drink. It was about 1.15 so quiet busy with city workers, but didn't bother us. While in there the food looked so good we had to try it. The staff were so friendly and very welcoming they also told us it may be more comfortable for us to dine upstairs which I must say was an excellent experience. I would highly recommend this place for food or drinks. I would give it 6 stars if I could we will definitely be back!
E. C.
Lovely old pub on the southern edge of the City of London and close to the Tower of London and river. Very impressive selection of ales. I was impressed by the wide range of gins available, some from the smaller distilleries not often seen in pubs. Highly recommended this great pub
K. W.
The staff at this venue are very friendly and greeted us with a nice, warm welcome. The girl who served us made some great drink recommendations and she seemed to know her stuff when it came to beer. The Lewis Carroll themed dining room is stunningly decorated and we found out they hire it for events purposes which is something we will definitely keep in mind for the future. 10/10 for this venue!
I. B.
still great after all these years, and nice ale. outside seating too
M. &. S.
Very nice traditional British pub, good selection of beers. Good location for work drinks or sightseeing refreshment. Food also looked really good although I didn't have any. Would definitely plan a visit to this pub next time I'm in that part of London. 10 mins walk from London Bridge station and just down the road from Monument.
I. L.
Astonishing pub and amazing staff. Food is outstanding and cooked to perfection, I also have an allergy and they took great care of me! The atmosphere is great and there is a large selection of gins. Also in an amazing location and near the monument and Tower of London. Would recommend!
T. P.
Great traditional city pub.
J. S.
Lovely venue and amazing location!
C. B.
The root vegetable hot pot is quite nice as is the vegetarian burger. Both times i came in the atmisphere and staff were lovely, the service was surprisingly quick and the grapefruit gin was just lovely. Definitely a great find for me.
T. G.
Great service and great English pub experience!
D. M.
Good pint of Guinness hence the three stars. Fish and chips were overpriced for the quality, steaks were not really up to shape or cooked how we asked. When advised there was seating down stairs it stunk of piss so we came back up. So I would say not bad or good. More meh. Staff were friendly enough though.
P. H.
A great place to meet with friends and colleagues for an after work drinks
Vibrant atmosphere with lots of bustle help with the all round feel of the place
Plenty of staff keep the drinks flowing so that you rarely have to wait more than a minute of so to be served. A big plus for city pubs
Good range of wines and beers complete the picture
The perfect City watering hole
No parking anywhere near by!!!!
D. H.
Always a great pint and great food.
J. W.
This could be a perfect pub - lovely interior with cosy spaces and room for larger groups, great staff - but the quality of the beer is sadly lacking. On my visit they had a number of hard to find beers in tap and none were in what I would consider good condition. Unsure how this happened. Will visit again and hopefully things will be different.
M. K.
Reasonable drink prices small menu.
M. P.
Great pub, friendly atmosphere, incredibly firendly and helpful staff. I am very impressed with the wide variety of gins and the food is great. I've been in quite a few times over the summer, great place to sit back and relax after work, enjoy a good drink and catch up with people. Would definitely recommend.
S. “. P.
Enjoyed a few visits here recently. City prices, City people but classic pub style. Gets busy when the sun shines. Food seemed expensive for what it was but again, City prices. Friendly staff. Loved the small old London architecture on the street.
m. c. c.
I previously gave this three * s, but seeing the owners response I've put it up to four. To be clear - this is a very nice pub with great staff who are very friendly. Nice (but small) outdoor area when its warm.
G. J.
Good noisy City pub. Fine range of beers. Well kept, but expensive, I suppose to pay the excessive London costs. Plenty of experienced barstaff, not always the case in Central London. I gather the food is good but I have not tried it.
C. W.
Steak and ale pie was great, one of your staff members recommended it. Nice atmosphere.
Z. S.
Lovely staff, very fast service. Not tried the food but the drinks were great!
M. A.
This was a lovely place with a nice dining room upstairs (the Lewis Carroll dining room, appropriately themed). Our only sadness was that two of our meals came with at least one item missing!! We were told this was because, since those two people had allergies, the food elevator had to be cleaned each time and they were really busy and may have just forgotten to put items on plates. We did end up getting all we ordered though, so all was well in the end. The two allergy peoples meals turned up about 15 mins before everything else though; something to bear in mind. Very good service from our waitresses though. It was a saturday evening, to be fair!
M. S.
Nice atmosphere and great selection of drinks & food
M. J.
This place is clean, friendly and a very good atmosphere. The reason for 3 stars is I went there with my wife for food. It was the 7th July 2017. The place was full outside but plenty of room inside due to the exceptionally hot weather. I waited for 15 minutes to get served. It never happened so we left. Not enough staff. A lot of people walked out. I would give it another chance though as the food did look good.
A. H.
Good pints and atmosphere. Had lunch here fee times too and was quite nice. Minus points for the bad smell they have at the premises (old beer)
P. N.
Great atmosphere and staff are fab
J. B.
Packed and loud. The upstairs dining room closed at 4:00pm and we ended up eating in the bar. A chicken and avacado sandwich was mostly mayonnaise with no chicken and one slice of avacado. The bar staff was friendly and the food arrived fairly quickly given how busy they were.
S. A.
Pint after a long walk. Best place after a long day.
L. W.
Good pub in an otherwise godforsaken location. They've always got 4-5 ales on tap, good nibbles, decent pub food menu. The upstairs room perfect for a business pub lunch.
R. K.
Conveniently located near Monument, with plenty of Alice in Wonderland inspired ambience. Very hot indoors in summer (rare problem I know) but had plenty of outdoor space too. Friendly and accommodating staff (5 star on staff)
J. R.
Classic London pub with a great feeling inside and out. Vaulted ceilings on the top level and a warm lower level. You can also gather outside on a nice day. I visited here after a conference across the street at the Old Billingsgate. The place can get busy.
Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
O. B.
Awesome place! Great beer, great food and great service. What more could you want from a City pub? 3 bars as well so spoilt for choice when it's busy!
R. B. -. E. k.
Such a great pub to pop in if you are having a walk down the River Thames Path as you have to come off around this area anyway.
Traditional London pub with a good atmosphere.
Nice spot to take a rest and sit down
J. M.
Staff are decent. Really busy on a hot day after work. You can stand outside and drink which helps with overcrowding. You can also rent space upstairs. Food sometimes comes out really slow at lunch times though. It's good one you get it though.
R. W.
Some of the staff was not too friendly. Tried to order the lentil pie advertised on the wall - out of stock. Then tried to order a side salad - out of stock as well. Then tried to order the Nicholson refresher which is also advertised in plain sight - they didn't have the ingredients for this either! Finally I ordered the Pimms drink (which the menu said had strawberries and mint)... alas, no strawberries or mint, was served a different drink than what I ordered without being told. The food was nothing special when it came, but not bad either. Would pass on this place...
G. R.
Amazing pub and good selection of beer
L. F.
Really nice Nicholson pub, the only thing that stops a five star review is they said they didn't do coffee, which I found odd. A great selection of Real Ales, though.
J. C.
Nice pub to stand in the sun in summer
a. M.
Fab Alice in Wonderland room upstairs. Great venue for a private party with a band dancing and private bar. Went to a Joint 50th on Saturday and it was a wonderful evening.
M. S.
Is a nice place to taste one of them different types of beers.. great atmosphere and polite staff.. Food is lovely.. Honestly a very pleasant experience.. Definitely coming back for more..!!
T. F.
Friendly staff, great food... primarily business crowd during weekday lunch times. Reasonably priced.... nice step off the streets for a good beer and some local fare.
J. L.
Changed a lot since first went here. But all good. Held one of our pie clubs there. Very acceptable food and beers. Would return.
M. A.
Very pleasent pub with good food
k. m.
Classic pub, good selection of draught beers and ales, even better selection of gins. Decent prices considering the location and the food is quite nice
J. D.
I hadn't been there for several years but was in the vicinity. Nice little pub, just a shame Nicholsons have hoovered up so many City pubs and restricted the beer selection.
S. K.
Had a lovely time at this super nice pub! Food was delicious! The selection of gins was astonishing! Will definitely come back for more!
J. P.
I am not British and go to a pub mainly because I would like to spend time with friends. Food and drinks were ok, customer service was ok I felt overwhelmed by how laud the place was.
S. N.
Always lovely....was there for wine tasting ( private event) food was from pub and was delicious). It's a fair sized place on different levels. Good buzz
K. K.
Nice layout & decor, but music a bit loud to talk to someone easily inside. Beer tastes good (but > £5 / pint)
P. C.
Nice pub, often passed this pub, stopped in last night. Huge range of beers. A great selection.
A. H.
Excellent pub with a good selection of beer on tap, location is 10/10.
J. P.
Friendly bants, good looked after well by Dave. Very good atmosphere and, even though it's a very busy pub, never felt claustrophobic. Definitely coming back.
J. H.
Amazing and fast staff. Great little pub and some good food too. Has been rhe local work pub for 4 years!
D. L.
Really like this pub. Traditional. Serves good food and also happens to be located near a curry house should you decide to move on.
J. R.
Good selection of ales, nice welcoming staff, always a good atmosphere. Overall a lovely place, would definitely recommend.
A. A.
I totally recommend this place. Nice pub, awesome atmosphere, and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. 💙
D. B.
An excellent place with great service and a really good atmosphere, definitely worth a visit if your into real ales or good food. I would recommend the Nicholson's Pale Ale.
J. T.
Traditional English pub just opposite the Old Billingsgate Market. In this corner you'll be able to see the Monument to the Great Fire as it's just down the same street. You'll also glimpse the cobbled stone roads that was once medieval London, making its way towards the Walkie-Talkie building. Only a year old, that building was voted the ugliest new building in 2015.
P. S.
Good beer, good food, fast service
C. F.
The pub is big enough to host all type of customers, nice main bar, amazing restaurant and a very cosy cellar bar. Highly recommended.
M. G.
Nice atmosphere, great staff, food is quite nice and the mulled wine is to die for! Definitely worth a visit.
D. S.
Had a group Christmas meal downstairs in the Cellar Bar. Good sized portions, lovely space to ourselves and great service from the staff behind our dedicated bar!
P. M. B.
Nice pub with a good beer selection. The chseseboard is excellent! Usually busy on weekday evenings as it is a very corporate area.
P. C.
nice place for a meal with friends, lovely selection of pies, great location and the staff were absolutely fantastic. would 100% recommend
A. L. (.
Good gin selection... Great in the summer as there's plenty of space outside... Downstairs can also be good for a easy chat and beer
L. T.
Lovely place to grab a pint, plenty to choose from and the food is quite nice as well.
G. A.
Good selection of beer; friendly and attentive staff. I will definitely come back on my next trip to London
D. W.
Plenty of seating, friendly bar staff, and nestled nicely away from the main throughfare so tends to be slightly quieter than other pubs in London
S. B.
Very nice atmospheric pub with lots of good alcohols and great service. In the evenings it's crowded but it's worth to drop by.
D. H.
Great little corner london pub.very busy Wednesday & Thursday after 1600.good selection of lagers and ales. Reasonably priced for location.relatively near monument tube.
T. A.
Nice pub. Generally easy enough to get a seat and the prices are very reasonable for the area.
B. B.
Cool pub, and decent food, but, they served us a salad with about half a pint of oil in the bottom - blech!
M. L.
Great beer and gin, busy lunchtimes and hot days with city workers and expensive as you might expect, but lots of character and great staff.
T. B.
Excellent service. Pretty good food and good value for London. Bit of a wait at lunch time. Overall will return
V. K.
I liked the pub with huge selection of ales and good food but staff seemed to be a bit unfriendly.
R. H.
A great London pub with great ales and good food service. I would recommend it to any visitor or tourist as its a great experience. Try the real ale and remember London for what it is real and not plastic or disney.
l. p. s. s.
Lovely city pub next to the monument, good selection of ales and well kept too!
J. R.
The Walrus and The Carpenter was worth the short walk from the Tower of London. The food was delicious and a good selection of beer on tap.
R. C.
Great food, nice beer and pleasant staff.
All covid clean
D. S.
Nice staff, good drinks and lovely atmosphere.
C. R.
Great food, I come here often and it's always empty in the dining area. Good place for a nice quiet meal
C. J.
The sitting area in the basement, where we were eating just didnt feel very welcoming.
They do have a toilet though.
T. M.
Good beer, good food, friendly staff. What more could you want from a pub.
R. B.
Great pub just off the beaten track. Have had many good times here and there is also an upstairs restraint.
C. N.
Authentic. Good outdoor seating.
M. E.
Great selection of beers and good food. Service could be a bit quicker behind the bar.
S. L. J.
I love this place its excellent for beers and a really big gin selection. I will definitely be back!
M. R.
Normally I'd give this place a 5 star review; excellent staff, friendly, polite and knowledgeable... However, on this occasion, a member of staff (Gary I believe) seemed to be off-hand and discourteous to regulars... and fellow staff.... Spoiled the atmosphere...
A. M.
Popped in late evening and found a gem of a pub staff very pleasant and place very clean. Would recommend it anyone.
M. H.
Awesome pub, plenty of space for beers outside on a nice sunny day
R. C.
Good beer and food, well organised in these weird times.

R. S.
A must visit for a pint!!
A. F.
When they're on pub crawl for staff were friendly and efficient we ended up drinking outside as there was too many of us
S. M.
Alright for a drink after work. Relaxed atmosphere and can drink on the streets when the pub itself is too full or its a sunny day
N. L.
Basic bar grub, good location on the river, decent pint of Doom bar, no local beers though

Small but welcoming West End pub. Excellent range of beers and spirits.
M. P.
Plenty of drinks to choose from, interesting mix of customers. Nice spot for an after work drinks with friends.
J. C.
A solid, clean city pub with a good cask selection. Outdoor space as well, for when the weather is nice.
D. M.
Love this pub but it's a victim of its own success so queue times can sometimes be long.
R. G.
Good pub friendly staff and traditional pub food
I. G.
I only used the upstairs bar at a Xmas Party but it's a good venue for a private event.
N. R.
For the City it's a decent place. I'm ancient (48) and found the Guinness to be good. Go, try it out, it's good.
S. T.
A relatively standard London pub. Reasonably priced drinks and a good choice of food.
J. A.
Great atmosphere, good service and the tastiest fish cakes. A short walk from Tower Bridge pier.
