Reviews of Ye Olde Mitre, Holborn
W. B.
Apart from when we were allowed to sit outside in the alley as part of the reopening from lockdown, I haven’t been in the Old Mitre for a good period of time.
London Pride is a standard at Fullers pubs and I thought I’d have that. No, not available, I was told. Ok, what’s similar I asked. ‘Oldschool’ was suggested. Ok a pint of that. £5. I proffered a tenner. No, we don’t accept cash. Fine.
Other customers came in and asked for Pride. Not on, they were told. I also heard someone say that it was in the cellar but they haven’t tapped it yet. The Oldschool then was finished, so I had been given the last from the barrel. It was ok to drink though, but obviously I wasn’t going to get another. I also heard another fellow order some other bitter and that it was off too, probably bottom of the barrel, but the bar person still served it.
So the pub doesn’t do food, and tries to offer too many beers, and seems to have difficulty doing that.
I had planned to meet some old friends there later this week but have changed my plans.
This experience might be a one off of course. Monday Blues. Except that it is Tuesday today.

I visited here in October as part of a birthday tour around some of London's oldest pubs. A small, quirky pub tucked away down a small alleyway. What a fantastic place, a real piece of old London. The front bar is quite small but cosy, there is outside seating to the front and undercover outside seating to the side and rear. Nice choice of ales on draught and bottle. Well worth a visit, I shall certainly be going back.

An absolutely delightful pub that’s so tucked away you have to know where you’re going. It’s one of my favourite places to pop on a cold winter’s evening. London Pride on tap, friendly staff behind the bar, quirky small rooms tucked around corners, and a fire burning away near the bar. Be sure to try upstairs if the bar area is too busy. A truly “old school” pub menu of pork pies, cheese toasties, and scotch eggs. A real hidden gem that’s all too rare to come by in central London these days.
J. W.
These seem difficult times for Central London pubs and it was quiet when I visited. However, the service remained friendly and I was made to feel welcome. Reasonable choice of real ales, although perhaps a little generic. Pub was clean though, it felt quirky (in a good way) and it's worth a visit.
I. C.
Lovely old pub - really gave that warm proper pub feeling which can be hard to come by in Central London, with space outside, tiny but lovely outdoor space and lively atmosphere inside. Staff are friendly and good selection of drinks which is always a plus
J. G.
This is the pub ! One of the oldest pubs in London, there has been a drinking establishment here since the 1400’s. (You may also recognize it from the movie snatch) Come for a simple pint and some classic decor! But make sure to keep an eye out for the fullers sign that marks the entrance. This place is a hidden gem for a reason!
P. H.
Such a great little pub and surprisingly nice outdoor areas too, feels like a long lost part of London. Definitely worth a trip
A. O.
Great place, very busy at 6pm . Would like to go back when quieter for a proper look round. Lethal staircase to toilet! Lol
R. S.
A brilliant old pub that resists modernisation and the trappings of tourism. Beautifully off the beaten track it still retains proper old-style charm. There’s nothing fake about this old tavern. Don’t change!!

One of the oldest pubs in London with an amazing vibe. Loved the Friday night scene here. Should be a part of your checklist while in London.
T. J.
A great place with a good service and a sense of history

Very old pub tucked away down an alleyway in Holborn. Very hard to find, but worth visiting. I believe that the pub dates from the 1700's. It is only a small place, with 2 bars and most of the original features remain. A good selection of real ales and other beers are served. I thoroughly enjoyed a couple of drinks in the historic surroundings. Bar snacks are also served.
N. M.
Olde world pub , nice selection of beers , great service .
I. C.

Just perfect.
Great beer and pork pie.
Staff very friendly.
Thanks very much.
Brilliant pub.
n. e.
Very friendly and beautiful place, staff knowledgeable about the beers, area and building. Worth the visit.
A. H.
Tiny weeny pub- the smallest in London? Outside area extremely popular with revellers. A must go to for anyone interested in historical pubs. It’s next to Chancery Lane tube and easy to walk past at first .
G. C.
A friendly welcome and an interesting choice of beers and cider, plus a choice of Sauvignon for the wife, made a positive impression. Add in the character of this historic venue, and it gets my full 5 stars.
V. K.
My favourite 'hole-in-the-wall' in the area. Tucked away in a nice almost inconspicuous corner which adds to the aura and the cosiness of the place. You can tell from the patrons that many have been coming here for years. Superb service and lovely toasties!
D. S.
Quaint old pub in centre of London, nice atmosphere, worth a visit. But did try to have a toasted sandwich (there were 5 hungry fellas) and it was within food service times but they refused as they "had just cleaned the sandwich toaster".
J. W.
Always lively, good selection of ales on tap. Don't miss the pork pies and scotch eggs. Fantastic.
M. F.
Great pub with loads of history , first opened in 1546 then reconditioned in 1920 , it still has all the features from 1546 which makes it beautifully nostalgic and with great ales and beers at exceptional prices for the city of London this pub most be on every pub goers place to visit..
W. S.
Great beer. Quaint. Very old. Lovely old London pub hidden away.
T. B.
This is such a wonderful pub to enjoy a pint. I was meeting friends here for the first time. I followed GPS, but it lead me to the block past the pub and luckily my friend told me about the narrow walkway to go through to get there (third photo). I arrived a bit early so I took a couple of photos of the outside and had a little deja vu. After ordering a pint and a toasted sandwich I took a look around. On the wall was a picture of the place in a frame. I have seen that very picture in a frame hundreds of times throughout the years, hence the deja vu. I was sitting in a historical place having a pint and a toasted sandwich. Life doesn't get much better then that. Cheers mate!
M. M.
Lovely pub with interesting history! Would definitely recommend booking in advance if you are hoping to find a table indoors.
C. W.
Visited in June of 2018. Worked really hard to find this place but the setting is amazing and I think it's one of London's great hidden (literally) gems.
n. e.
Very friendly and beautiful place, staff knowledgeable about the beers, area and building. Worth the visit.
P. W.
Crowded London pub, like it used to be. Real buzz, but anyone worried about social distancing should beware. There is outside standing and seating, but it's pretty cosy!!!
C. C.
Had we had to find this place on my own I would never have found it. We were in a tour and Jane Peyton showed us this little gem. Such a great little place. Check before you go because it might be closed on the weekend.
G. P.
Lovely pub, at first glance it is excruciatingly narrow :) but appearances are deceiving and it is really not. If you enjoy the old style of London pub that are not just a large soulless empty room full of people drinking you will enjoy it for the asthetic alone. Good but small selection of beers and we had a few very good pints of Jaipur
B. O.
If you visit London this pub is a must good selection of Beers and the staff are friendly and they also do snacks and in my opinion the Best landlady in London. Yes one of my favourites.!🍺🍺🍺😁😁😁😋😋
J. G.
Great old pub. Excellent ale. Good service but because of that crowded and noisy
T. L. P. M.
🚇 Chancery Lane
🍺 £4.25 Amstel
❤️ Pub number 100!!
I have always wanted to visit this pub since I saw it in a scene with “Doug The Head” in the film Snatch. So I plotted my course to visit and I have to say it’s a bit of a bugger to find as it is located in an alleyway just off Holborn Viaduct but after a bit of mooching around I found the alleyway entrance and made my way down to the pub.
.
This historic establishment doesn’t disappoint from outside to in, from its beautiful exterior to its charming interior this boozer is a class act. The ceilings are low and the bars are quite small which all adds to the ambience, there’s bric-a-brack hanging from the ceilings and on shelves all around the walls. This is a Fullers pub so the beer offering is good and if you’re a bit peckish there’s bar snacks available if you fancy a pork pie with your pint. The clientele is a mixture of office workers, tourists & regular pub goers but it wasn’t too crowded on this Tuesday afternoon, if you’re planning a visit, note that the pub is only open Monday to Friday.
.
Historic, charming and full of character, Ye Olde Mitre is must visit London Pub.

Iconic original pub in the city. Wonderful atmosphere and great choice of beers for after work drinks
L. H.
Well worth finding this brilliant little pub, down a little alleyway. Excellent beer and friendly staff, discount for CAMRA members
s.
This is a great place. A little escape from the busy city to relax, have a pint, and some good food. We had toasted ham and cheese sandwiches and Scotch eggs. Be warned, the mustard is so hot that from now on all others will be judged on my Olde Mitre scale. It was very hard to leave and go back out into the hustle of the city.
G. W.
Bar is located down a lane with lovely interior, normal selection of beers but don't do food just bar snacks
P. C.
Small but great pub. Neck Oil on tap, need I say anymore!
D. G. d. M.
Great historic pub, but really small - so often end up in the alleyway.
W. A.
Very cool old pub, bustling after work crowd, good beers, cool spot hidden down an alleyway. Pretty good pies and sausage rolls too. Nice historical spot.
G. E.
The place is just lovely, very cosy and old-fashioned, it definitely deserves a visit in the Chancery Lane area, but my pint of Fuller London Pride was only average-ish.
By the way, from Ely place it is very easy to miss the tiny entryway, I walked past it several times and had to ask.
T. J.
A great place with a good service and a sense of history
S. R.
Classic pub. Good range of beers. Northern Ossett ales definitely a winner.
S. H.
This bar is nearly 500 years old (!) and full of extraordinarily friendly patrons and staff who are happy to share stories and a beer with you. While you should not expect the latest craft beer sensations on tap, there are several smaller batch options.
K. M.
This central London hideaway is a historical gem where you can step back in time and forget the world for an afternoon. The feel is very much from the 16th century and the carpet looks like the original one laid all those years ago with its worn path and ‘great grannies’ living room appeal. The creaking staircase makes you feel like a teenager sneaking back home late at night without your parents hearing you. If you are going to support a local watering hole, this one certainly pays you back with nostalgia and a warm homely feeling.
J. O.
Very nice pub, typical high London prices, very very small inside
t. s.
Spectacular traditional old pub. Huge space with amazing beer choice & welcoming staff. Great prices too! Cheap drinks & food.
A. P.
Great pub which is well hidden from the world (which is fun because you need to try and find it). If you can't find space downstairs try and go up :)
E. H.
Londons most difficult pub to find! Est. 1546. Walked around and around. Well worth the trip! Supposedly an old hangout of Queen Elizabeth, according to an elderly couple with a book😊and if that place isn't a place for a royal to get away I don't know what is..
P. B.
Hidden gem in London would give five stars but cash not accepted.
d. c.
Such an historic place - 1/2 way down small alleyway - worth the visit every time!
G. B.
What a treat. Definitely a must visit in London. This place is always full but you'll be able to get a pint.
B. M.
This is a wonderful place to sit down in the front room by a fireplace to have beer and food. They have a back room which is a bit busier. Food options a small plates with sausages, scotch eggs, salads, chips, and more.
K. D.
Excellent, ancient 600 year old pub
P. M.
Well known hostelry near Hatton Gardens. Popular, busy and welcoming establishment with a range of good real beer.
R. B.
Down a narrow alleyway by 8 Hatton Garden hidden away is the best pub in London. Weekdays only. Judith is a great custodian, bar-keep and landlady of this pub (founded in 1546).
No jukebox. No fruit machines. No mobile phone signal. Rediscover the art of conversation.
Food is pub fayre. Toasties, pork pies, sausage rolls - English tapas.
Look out for blue Bishop's Mitre on the lamp post.
i. p.
Very nice historic pub. Excellent ale.
C. H.
Best hidden gem in the area. Friendly staff, good atmosphere, and nice selection of drinks.
G. J. R.
Nicely nestled into a back alley, very charming old building with two floors. About 8 beers on tap.
T. P.
Very small English pub. Very nice place to visit for a drink with family or friends
S. N.
Great location, very friendly staff and nice beer. Always enjoyed having a drink here.
T. L.
Small back alley pub in the heart of London. Cosy and full of history
K. K.
One of the best pubs I've been in the UK. Fish and chips are perfect
O. B.
One of the truly iconic pubs. Should be even better during winter as it's naturally cosy. Don't tell *all* your friends, it's secrecy is part of its charm.
S. M.
My favourite london pub. Small and full of character. Staff are friendly.
M.
You come here for history and decent beer. Not much else. And it is expensive. But then this is London!!
A. P.
Its a great pub ! Service superb, ambience amazing. Staff always friendly.
G. B.
Lovely traditional back street pub. Blink and you will miss the alley that leads to this little gem.
5 real ales on tap and seating out side.
B.
Cool place where Élisabeth 1st was in love with the one who bought this old Inn!
Don't hesitate to enter just to see the old "mat de Cocagne" at the right of the main door. A lot of historical anecdotes there!
This small place, which wasn't so small in the elder times, was part of a deal between the Queen and the Pope. And the Queen won :)
L. P.
Go here if you like the old world vibe and for ambience. Food and drinks are regular things but the ambience of an centuries old pub tucked in an alleyway is unique.
K. I.
Tiny and a little hard to find but worth it. Great cozy atmosphere for a couple of pints away from the hustle and bustle.
T.
Friendly bar staff, great beer and atmosphere. Recommended!
N. S.
Nice place to drink querky place set in a old London ally way thumbs up 👍
D. M.
Delightful old style pub, with choice of real ales, but unfortunately rediculus London prices, otherwise it would have been 5 stars.
M. G.
Little hidden pub, great atmosphere and awesome beers! We found it by pure luck and we has a great night!
P. A. S.
A nice after-work crowd at this hidden, down a passage way, very old pub, since 1546.
D. S.
Stunning historic pub hidden away in plain sight bang in the middle of Coveng Garden
Friendly helpful staff
Interior is beautiful and kept as traditional as possible for it's age
Great well kept beer
Only downside is it is quite difficult to find, but persevere, it is well worth the effort
G. M.
Wonderful intimate place... makes you feel like your in old London.. love love love
D. R.
Lovely hidden Gem. Definitely one of the places with a sprit. 500 year old pub with a lot of history and funny things for you to see. Give it a go!
M. B.
Oldest pub in London 1546
In a back alley, 2 small bars, beer barrels outside, covered outside area
A. w.
Great choice of beers and perfect atmosphere, especially for the time of year
G. T.
Quirky, great beer and feels like a bit of a secret. What's not to like!
G. C.
Best pub in London, no ifs, no buts.
V. C.
Wow! Fantastic historic pub! I love the feel. It is small in size but big in atmosphere. I love the way it is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you come, make sure you go upstairs and read the story about the cat on the wall. This is a must for those of you looking to tour the oldest pubs in Lindon!
B. F.
Very cozy pub. Wonderful alleyway with fairy lights for ambiance.
F. M.
Very nice and cosy historic pub with open fireplace. Definitely worth a visit!
R. G.
Wonderful to see this pub is finally open again (Sep 2020). One of the best in London not only for character but the cask ale is always perfect. To have 4 different ones on post-lockdown and all in prime condition is a real bonus.
B. C.
Very charming old pub. Quite small so a lot of the time the crowd spills into the alley nearby, but if you can find a spot indoors it is very atmospheric. Standard Fuller's selection of drinks (so a very good range); all in all a great place to enjoy a few pints.
l. o.
Fantastic old pub, tucked away off Hatton Gardens,
M. B.
Interesting pub, definitely different. Welcoming staff
A. S.
Quaint little pub hidden away off the hustle and bustle of Hatton Garden. Staff are very friendly and the drinks are a good price for London too!
C. P.
One of London's great pubs. There is a magical Dickensian feel to the place.
P. W.
Nice smaller old pub for a pint (one of the oldest around London). Decent beer but not a huge choice due to the age of the place and limited space. Nice traditional English pub nibbles too. Staff always helpful and lots of outside standing space.
C. D.
Hidden down a small back alley, it took us circling the block a couple times to locate the entryway. I loved the history and old feel of the architecture. There were several rooms and a nice outdoor alley area for drinking, depending on your mood and preference for company. Highly recommend stop if you're seeking classic old pubs.
D. I.
Oldest pub in London. You NEED to have a look at this.
Z. R.
Excellent pub, very friendly staff
N. E.
This is a typical London city pub. It is hidden away down an alley off Hatton Garden, but it is worth hunting down. The bar staff are happy and welcoming, and their range of real ales is impressive. I have no idea about the food they may serve.
M. B.
Lots of small rooms and good beer
M. B.
Beautiful hidden spot in the heart of of London. The Old Mitre is really well hidden and you must know where to go to find it. the place is really small. The atmosphere is just amazing and beautiful and I would recommend anyone to go there and have a pint of Beer.
C. J. W.
Great atmosphere and beautiful, historic pub. Out of the way of the busy streets of Farringdon and Chancery lane - only open during the week however, so it's full of Suits. Also fairly pricey for a drink but well worth it for the space.
E. D.
Beautiful historic pub with great cask ale.
M. A.
Great service and pleasant exchanges from the staff. Great place to share with friends or clients. Non-pretentious, all round great vibes.
P. B.
My favorite pub in London. Old old old with lots of nooks and crannies, with itself being in a nook and crannie. So proud of myself for finding this place on my own :) I come every time I'm in town and insist on dragging others with me. As per usual in this city, the beer is severely lacking. Def not a criticism specific to YOM.
G. S.
In my top 5 of best London pubs
M. S.
nice place with pool and parking, breakfast was good and close to the beach and shops.
S. N.
A great night spent here. This place was a relic even before Samuel Pepys was writing his diaries of life in London. The -copies of- documents on the walls chart the pub's long history, and would keep any solo drinker from having to look at their phone, for entertainment while enjoying a tasty beer. Friendly staff. And the gents toilet, at least, was modern and clean. There were no downsides here. Highly recommended.
E. E.
Really nice old boozer with plenty of ales which they rotate frequently. Nice snacks such as pork pies or toasties available for reasonable money. Can be absolutely rammed between 4 PM and for a few hours so be prepared to stand outdoors to drink during these hours
X. W.
Classic British pub tucked away down a couple of alleys, squeezed in behind lots of corporate buildings. It isn't very big, but there's plenty of space outside if it isn't raining. Good beer selection, you can't go wrong with any of the ales, but other than that it's no frills and all about the cheerful, friendly atmosphere.
C. M.
Great hidden pub serving good beer
A. S.
I wouldn't have known about this place if my friends hadn't brought me here for an ale. The atmosphere is great - very quaint, traditional and welcoming. They have quite the selection of beer form all over the world and the food is very delicious, what you'd find in a Fuller's pub. No surprises here, just good atmosphere, traditional interior and prompt service. The perfect place to grab a beer with friends.
B. H.
This is an odd little relic of a pub, a genuine classic ale house and you can't complain if that is all you need. Don't go here for the food though because the menu hasn't changed since the 1960s and consists of a simple sandwich made behind the he bar or a simple pork pie.
The beer is excellent and the ambience exactly the cure to all the fashionable places on the area.
A. M.
Nicely busy, cosy, quirky little pub
J. V.
The pub is very nice, romantic hidden treasure in central of London. Thank you for the amazing staff especially Eva who was incredibly kind and nice with us. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the pub. I am definitely going back in the future.
D. C.
I love the location. It was featured in the Guy Ritchie film "Snatch". Service was great, even through the pandemic. The staff was quite entertaining and nice.
A. P.
Picturesque and hard to find pub. Taking someone to this hidden gem will show your local credentials. Food and beer are really good value for money although the selection of beers is very limited.
Always very busy. You'll be lucky to find a table.
A. M.
Alley way bar that will really give you a good feel of London. Incredible it’s been around for so long.
k. k. s. c.
One of London's worst-kept-secret pubs. Part of the fun is in finding it. Then, when you get inside, you find yourself in this wonderful, unique building. A great pub woth a great, friendly team of bar staff who'll make you feel welcome.
I. M.
One of the oldest pubs in England. Jeremy Clarkson said it was his favourite pub and he is rather an expert... it's situated in it's own private courtyard, on a nice street in Hatton Garden. The interior is old world style and how you would have imagined it looking in the day. Can't comment on the food but the pub is lovely and very atmospheric.
S. H. C.
Always a unique, and very real London like experience. I love it for the authenticity.
S. A.
After 30 years service in City of London Police I was searching for a suitable venue to celebrate my retirement. Although located just outside the City boundary I could not have made a better choice. There was no charge for reserving the upstairs room which was perfect for our needs. The staff were welcoming and friendly without being intrusive and everyone enjoyed the evening. Food is very simple - toasted sarnies, pork pies, scotch eggs, sausage rolls, nuts. The beer was very well kept and the choice good. It's a Fuller's pub but guest ales are always available and change every week. Prices are reasonable for London too.
As for the building, well go judge for yourselves. A genuine grade 2 listed Georgian gem on a site dating from the 16th century.

Cracking Boozer.
Pub where Snatch was filmed
R. M.
Very good beer and cozy place! Try the pork pie and the scotched egg
K. M.
Lovely oak panelled pub, plenty of character, seating inside and out.
A. M.
Adorable, and this is an understatement. The awesomeness starts from the moment you enter this place through a tiny alley. The interior features two disjoint rooms at ground floor and one room at the first floor. All rooms are fairly small. Although it maintains the cosy feeling of a pub, at the same time it feels a bit formal as well. I had only drinks there but I will surely be coming back! Loved it!
C. T.
I discovered this shortly after moving to London as I was working on a story on London at the time of Charles Dickens and used to regularly make the journey from Soho to have a pint here after work. I now work in Chancery Lane and can come here much more easily, haha! It's a beautiful pub with friendly staff, solid nibbles (pork pies are good!) and you can book the upstairs or the little alcove if you want, which I really recommend. If you have friends visiting London, it's a good quintessentially English experience.
S. P.
Cracking heritage pub well hidden down a narrow lane off a quiet street. Although this does not prevent it from being extremely popular and for good reason. The preserved timbered interior is a true delight. The beer is great and service very good. Can not fault the place. One for the pub purists.
C. B.
My favourite pub in London which keeps calling me back every visit. Friendly, cozy, good selection (despite its small size) and an ambiance that's hard to beat anywhere.
M. M.
I love this pub! The atmosphere is quite special. Very dark and quiet. It’s like having a pint and pie back in time. Very very nice specially if you are a tourist, don’t miss it- you won’t regreat
I. H.
The hostess of this fine establishment is an amazing human. Not only is she always friendly but will go above and beyond on finding seating and comfort for every patron no matter how busy and full the pub is. Would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience the real British hospitality!!
M. R.
One of London's Oldest pubs and down an alleyway off a side street it is a hidden gem. Well worth a visit but if you wish to relax there then do try to go during early/ mid-afternoon on a week day because the pub's diminutive size and popularity means that, in the after-work crowd, it can get very tricky to get into the pub to get yourself a drink; never-mind find a seat!
S. M.
Cosy pub with great range of ale
J. S.
If you're looking to an authentic London pub experience, this is the place to go! Enter through an alley to discover this quaint pub tucked away among its surrounding buildings. Wide range of ales, wines, homemade snacks and a friendly staff make this a great spot to hang out. Lots of nooks outside to have a quiet and intimate drink with friends.
p. c.
My favourite bar in London. Tiny bar, tiny menu of bar snacks, Fullers ales. Proper city boozer not open at weekends. Hard to find but really worth it for a lunchtime pint and a pork pie.
B. W.
Lovely building, several areas or cosy rooms to use. Gets pretty busy at the end of working hours but upstairs usually free. Snacks such as toasties or pork pies are decent. Reasonable range of beers. Pleasant staff.
B. B.
One of my favourite London pubs. A Great historic pub, but it's the quality of the real cask ales I come for. I haven't had a bad pint of London Pride or Deuchars IPA at this pub; each of the 5-6 times I have been it's been top quality.
E. P.
A great little tucked away gem in the heart of London. Cozy and traditional, and set over two floors so you can always find a place to sit/ perch. Reasonably priced beer. The only weird thing is the absence of chips from their food menu.... Not easy to find, so keep your eyes peeled and make sure you pop in for a pint!
S. M.
Excellent old-school interior, very cosy. Some might find it a little cramped when busy, but I think it has a great atmosphere.
Good selection of ales at a reasonable price. I didn't try the food, but I've heard it's very good.
Knowledgeable and friendly staff. I had quite a fun chat with the manager (an amiable Scottish fellow) about the pub scene in London.
L. M.
In a world of declining traditional pubs, this has to rate at the top. Built in 1546 (!) it has walled in an old cherry tree into a display case, which previously marked the boundary between the pub and the land of Sir Christopher Hatton (wealthy land owner of the area, whose name adorns road signs and more). The pub itself is ensconced down an alleyway that's wonderfully easy to miss (so free of uninformed passing trade) yet enables people to spill out and enjoy a pint in the old narrow causeways of old East London. Inside the pub, it's tight and small, but everyone just gets on with it, knowing being in a place with character and provenance is worth all the roomy sports bars in the world. 2 really, really tiny bars actually serve people quickly, with a friendly bar staff that always seem to be glad you're there and happy to offer tasters of ales on tap.
There's not much to dislike. I didn't try the food, so can't speak to that. If you don't like really properly old pubs (a dying breed), that are small but feel homely, then don't go here. Otherwise, make it your destination if only to say you've been in a 16th Century pub, built over 200 years before the US was officially founded. It's hard not to love it.
L. L.
It claims to be one of the oldest pubs. In any case it is a cozy place indeed with a good beer selection. Have not tried the food but would recommend it anyway as a sightseeing spot.
T. S.
Great beers and snacks in a traditional pub environment. Justifiably popular but can get a bit "snug" as a consequence.
s. j.
Had a great time here. Brought a friend along and he had a good time too. Very quaint small pub, hard to get much more traditional than this one. Good selection of real ales to pick from, but the real reward is just to sit in there and look about the place. Not easy to find unless you know what you're looking for. Very easy to walk right by and miss it. Just look for the bishops mitre on the lamp post, that'll get you to the entrance to the alley.
Great place to bring visitors who want to see a really old pub.
M. D.
Ye old mitre is tucked in a small alley way of hatton garden quite difficult to find. It is said it is one of the oldest site's of an ale house in London. Not a favourite of mine rather small and claustrophobic the ales are good have not eaten there so cannot comment on the food. Worth a visit if in the area for the historical and novelty experience
G. F.
Great beer in a historic pub
N. M.
Barely any food to be found for a lunch, not even bare essentials, just a crude snacks menu and pork pies if you like those. They did have an allergy menu but provided it with the attitude "we give you the menu and you choose if you like, we don't take any responsibility" - They seem to almost have had a bad experience with food and now have an attitude against anything sensible. The beer selection and hidden, quiet location is a positive but it all felt a short offering by then.
A. C.
Great beer, tasty bacon sandwich and good prices. The place was packed, and I didn't get a table. Nevertheless, I wish I could bring my girlfriend or a friend to experience this little corner of old London again.
K. R.
Nice atmosphere, not many seats but enough standing space
A. E.
Fun, traditional old pub. It's a Fullers, so it has the brewery's staples: London Pride, ESB, maybe Black Cab Stout if you're lucky. It's a great boozer to visit if you're looking for old-fashioned pub in London, but it mostly caters for the after-work crowd so it can get busy.
T. W.
A great pub with a lot of history. The staff are very friendly with a good selection of real ales all served well. They also make great tasting toasties.
S. D.
Love this place not just that's it's my local but the old and authentic and the traditional all in one and not mention Judith, the landlady keeps it all going.
M. S.
Very traditional old pub in London.
I. H.
The hostess of this fine establishment is an amazing human. Not only is she always friendly but will go above and beyond on finding seating and comfort for every patron no matter how busy and full the pub is. Would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience the real British hospitality!!
T. W.
A great pub with a lot of history. The staff are very friendly with a good selection of real ales all served well. They also make great tasting toasties.
J. M.
One of the best pubs in London.
T. H.
Affordable place. Amazing services. Great atmosphere. Great collection of drinks. Bar section was amazing. I liked wide selection of drinks. Services was great. Staff were friendly.
E. E.
Really nice old boozer with plenty of ales which they rotate frequently. Nice snacks such as pork pies or toasties available for reasonable money. Can be absolutely rammed between 4 PM and for a few hours so be prepared to stand outdoors to drink during these hours
J.
Love this place. Right up my alley!
L. L.
It claims to be one of the oldest pubs. In any case it is a cozy place indeed with a good beer selection. Have not tried the food but would recommend it anyway as a sightseeing spot.
N.
Lovely little pub hidden away off Hatton Garden. Selection of beers and ales, but only a small menu of sandwiches, pasties and sausage rolls. The Mitre has been there since 1546 - nearly 500 years. Great for history buffs!
T. A.
A lovely old pub tucked away down an alley with friendly staff and a good selection of ales
R. S.
Awesome little pub tucked out the way. Very nice in the evening the the lights down the alleyway surrounding the pub. Tight inside to get a seat but definitely worth a visit.
A. B.
Fabulous quaint and historic pub with two tiny bars and small outside drinking area. Good range of beer - only snacks served. Best visited at quiet times. Can be hard to find for those "not in the know" . Usually only open Monday to Friday , except GBBF weekend in August.
S. P.
Quaint and ancient pub accessed via a pedestrian alleyway. It comprises a few small rooms at ground and first-floor level.
On the pumps - Fullers beers, which I always used to feel were rather ambitiously priced, even by London standards. But the more I experience the atrocity of paying £4.20 for a pint of 3.8% watery session ale, the more I come to accept it as 'London life'.
For me, it didn't quite live up to the hype of being one of London's great old drinking haunts. I guess that the presence of some token local drunks and a few loud off-duty Cityboys didn't exactly add anything to the charm of the pub, at all.
I recommend Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese if you really want a historic small-roomed boozer.
A. S.
Quirky quintessential English pub, tucked away down a little alley. Would not look out of place in a Harry Potter movie. Real ales and good gin choice. Don't expect a seat!
L. A.
Great pub, good toasties and central location. Already booked a table outside for when it opens again.
T. D.
Great old-skool Fuller's pub tucked away from the surrounding hustle and bustle of Holborn and Farringdon. Good cask ale choices, small and quaint traditional bar and lounge either side of the bar and ample outside space, too.
J. H.
One of the first London pubs I discovered, and despite having been to probably over 200 in the city since then this is still probably my overall favourite.
The appearance and history of the place are well documented elsewhere - all I would add is that there's a unique atmosphere to the Mitre - an air of something other-worldy and magical - which I've never really found anywhere else.
I love this pub, long may it stand.
A. M.
Snatch was filmed here!! And if you wanna feel like Vinnie Jones, gulping down a pint, definitely head to Ye Olde Mitre.
You feel like you've found a slice of secret London as this pub is hidden down a little passage, just off Hatton Garden (even though it gets so busy you may have to stand outside the front of the pub in said passage, holding your pint).
Great for a sneaky lunchtime glass of wine ;)
A. W.
Lovely old pub down a hard to find alleyway. One of my absolute favourites in London. It always has a great selection of beers on.
N. D.
Great selection of ales, good pork pies and toasted sandwiches too at great value prices. Atmosphere inside is great, quiet in the day but heaving on Thursday and Friday evenings. Good smoking area too for those that need.
D. P.
A pub in the wall. I always enjoy a pub that is a bit hard to find, Ye Olde Mitre is one of those. Situated on Hatton Garden the Diamond District of London.
If you are looking for a quiet pub with nice seating, then you should probably look for somewhere else, this place is always busy and situated down a mews which adds to its charm. The reason you know the pub is there is because of the amount of people in the alley.
The drinks aren't exactly cheap, the food is nice and the service is pretty fast, you can sometimes get a seat but it is the exception not the rule as most flat surfaces have people stood with a drink.
If you are looking for a quaint pub that you want to show people and are in the area, I'd suggest this place for sure.
A. F.
A (very !) Old Classic !
Since 1546 there's been an inn here. History abounds, plus a little bit of mystery....try and find it ! Tucked away down an alley with no access, other than on foot, you'll feel you e earned your drink just by arriving at the bar. Where a good selection of real ales and great food await. Go there if you can !
G. H.
One of the very, very few old pubs in London that feels genuinely old. And it's a Fullers pub which means that the beer is excellent. And it features in the film 'Snatch'. Five stars.
L. L.
It's lovely, tucked away in a private road and the clientele know they are in the know. Why four stars? No draught Guinness that day! It gives me an excuse to drink there again and review it a second time the next occasion I'm near.
M. M.
Cozy historical pub with a fair selection of beers (run of-the-mill ones) but close to no choice in food. In summer, it's nice to stand outside. There's an upper floor with additional space.
N. M.
One of the coolest buildings I've ever seen. Hard to find, tucked into a near invisible alley, this is quintessential old school London. Do yourself a favor and hunt this place down and have an ale, you'll feel like you jumped back 600 years.
M. D.
This is what every one imagines an English pub to look like! Quaint, full of character, amazing atmosphere, and friendly staff and patrons! This is a particular gem. Very old and a funny back story - it didn't use to be classed as being in London!
C. D.
Nice little place tucked away down an alley. Clean rooms, polite staff, worth a visit.
S. T.
Came in for a lunchtime pint, beer fantastic as always. Would have been a 5 star but there are a lot of new staff and some of them use inappropriate language behind the bar. Training issue maybe?
T. B.
Really atmospheric, old London pub accessed by a narrow alleyway. Very unusual. Great service & beer. Was even asked for my order and had my beer brought to me whilst I stood in alleyway outside!
T. B.
The place was founded in 1546. It's a great wee pub in the diamond district. Hatton Garden is a great spot in London. It's quiet but there are some nice gems. The Olde Mitre is the crown jewel.
E. K.
This is an excellent venue beautiful traditional decor, lovely friendly staff and great food and drink.
M. H.
Tucked down an alley, this is one of the oldest pubs in London.
A selection of ales and lagers as you would expect in London, and some pub food favourites as well. The best time of year to come is in the summer, when the pub spills out into the alley off Hatton Garden and everyone enjoys the late evening sunshine.
Recommended for tourists and Londoners.
C. S.
Nice beer. But there was an overwhelming smell of bleach which was off putting. Plus we were asked to leave to snug as it was booked, plus the up stairs booked as well, made the option of somewhere to sit very limited.
B. D.
Absolutely classic pub hidden away in the centre of London. Decent snacks and small plates as well as a solid selection of beers and ales. Only downside is that it's closed at the weekends (but comes with that part of London)
H. J.
Lovely old pub tucked away off Holbern Circus very atmospheric worth a visit
J. J.
This is a great, quirky old pub! It's always packed inside and out! A favourite for a few pints. Definitely worth a visit.
C. C.
Old quirky pub with a good selection of beers and decent food.
Definitely worth the detour.
Fun fact: until recently, this pub was officially in Cambridgeshire due to centuries-old agreements between the bishop of Cambridge and the local authorities. The pub still has a collection of postcards addressed to "Ye Olde Mitre, Cambridgeshire".
S. M.
Lovely little pub tucked away.
j. A.
An hard to find pub but worth looking up
G. M.
I really like this historic pub. Well hidden at the back of hatton garden, only problem is that being do small you often end up outside with the ever present smokers. Visit during the afternoon to find out what a great little pub this is.
R. A.
I love this pub. Hidden down a little alleyway, its a lovely old building with a nice little outdoor area. Great selection of beer, good bar food and really friendly staff - even better, on occasions they do 'table' service outside for drinks!
C. M.
Beautiful old pub, good quality pint of London Pride, but condescending and rude staff. Being a hot day, I enquired whether they had any chilled pale ales on tap. I was told flatly no such thing existed, you can only get pale ales in a bottle, only chilled lagers on tap. Being partial to a chilled meantime pale ale from the keg, I said it was possible to get chilled ales, whereupon the bar lady said 'no, it is not possible' with a hint of disdain. I left it, and just went for a Pride.
J. R.
Great historical pub tucked out the way. Good ales and food was good also. Quite a small place and popular with the working lunchtime crowd. Closed at the weekends.
M. S.
Best place on entire London, must see, must buy beer.
D. H.
Great pub full of character, though it was a busy Friday night we didn't have to queue endlessly at the bar for a drink. The bar man came over to us. Fantastic service.
R. J.
When it comes to old London pubs this one takes some beating. It dates back to the 1500's and is hidden away down a narrow alleyway of Hatton Garden. There's no loud music, no fruit machines, just the babble of good, and sometimes animated conversation. Just be warned though that it never opens at weekends and public holidays.
C. M.
Visiting London from the U.S., we were lucky enough to have a local friend that took us to this hidden gem. With an entrance located in a tiny alleyway, you get the feel of entering a high brow secret club with a business crowd dressed professionally. That said, the inside while cramped with not much seating, has a nice selection with friendly staff and a neat environment.
T. R.
These 5-star reviews baffle me. It's an excellent setting and it does have a wide selection of ales. However, they are often very poor tasting. I drink there frequently with a group, and usually leave the last few mouthfuls of any pint. Whilst the manager is *sometimes* amiable, he is also - along with his colleagues - very often rude, defensive, unhelpful and unwelcoming. We're treated like more of a nuisance than regular and loyal customers.
G. H.
One of London's oldest pubs. Decent range of beer and bar snacks but busy directly after work hours. Much better post 7.30pm.
N. I.
A lovely old pub in a discreet alleyway. Absolutely worth it.
R. G.
Excellent old English Pub. Has all the atmosphere, beers, and games you could want. Only downside is it is small, and will get really busy at popular times
O. P.
One of the oldest if not the most ancient pubs in London with all remaining features, what else can I add. Just good selection of wine, snacks and very friendly staff.
B. E. H.
mid afternoon Thursday laid back and wonderful visit. thanks for making my 2yr old feel welcome! amazing staff, good beer and delish food.
E. B.
Ye Olde Mitre is one of those places that should be on all London visitors' list. Amazing atmosphere, fabulous selection of beers (from all around the world) and really good food. Definitely recommend it.
z. k.
Great place. Very friendly and professional landlord. Very good home made food. Lovely pictures on the walls painted by local artists. Worth visiting. Proper English pub.
L. R.
Quality find in the centre of London. My Yorkshire colleague introduced me to the bar maid using a "sprinkler" to enhance my pint of ale. Highly recommended.
J. A.
Great little pub. Worth a visit.
E. H.
Great beer we'll kept. They do food also, toasties are superb. Interesting pub interesting location, busy after 4 pm
D. W.
Tiny, historic and busy. One of the oldest pubs in London, and looks the part. Not much room inside unless you sneak upstairs, which is often missed and usually has space.
S. J.
Lovely historic old pub, dating, I believe, from 1546. Good beer, real ales, and good food. Interior largely unaltered - quite easy to imagine you have travelled back in time. Love it!
D. T.
A little bit of magic, another alleyway, another great pub, tiny bars very cosy. Just great fun. Find it, pop in, have a beer and you can buy the love of your life some jewellery while you're about it!
J. C.
Like stepping back in time. I always feel slightly smug knowing about this place whilst all the uninitiated walk on by!
It’s one of my favourite places in London to meet friends for for a chat and a drink.
A. S.
Whenever I come here, I feel like I'm walking down Diagon Alley in Harry Potter. You just don't know this place is here, and how old it is. Looks really great in winter when all the little fairy lights are on as well.
L. Z.
One of the cosiest pubs in London. It is often packed but the service room upstair usually has some free seats. Highly recommended
r. h.
If you visit London this pub is a must
J. C.
Ye Olde Mitre was a huge surprise; a bit hard to find, but that makes it an island of calm in the midst of a busy area in the City. Not a great ale selection, but the ambiance and history of the place is like a magnet, and stopping in for a pint was just what the doctor ordered on a hot and busy afternoon.
J. S.
Nice, very old pub. It has two small bars and the toilets are outside, but under cover. Real history and great beer too!
P. J.
Great old pub in the heart of London. Tremendous character and full of history with a good range of beers both real ales and lagers.
E. B.
Tucked away, tiny and full of character. Moderate range of beers. Men's toilets are not great and the prices are a bit too high. Still worth a visit though.
s.
If you’ve just been chased into Ely Place by the police, then you’ll have noticed they stopped at the end of the street. Ely Place is an odd other-world cul-de-sac that police may only enter by invitation, and that takes a while to sort out. You do have time to spare, but unfortunately you’re completely trapped. There’s only one other way out of Ely Place and that’s down that narrow passage on the left, the one that looks like a way through to the bins, past the pub, and down another narrow alley and out into Hatton Garden and freedom. But that pub I just mentioned is Ye Olde Mitre, and it’s a pub too good to pass by. So as I said, you’re completely trapped, and you’re going to jail.
In the meantime, you still have time for a couple of drinks, and drinking here is like drinking inside an old grandfather clock, and something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. It’s also a pub that obviously loves to play hide and seek, so you may never find it again.
One tip: This pub is conserving energy to get itself through another three centuries and doesn’t open at weekends. So make sure the police chase you into Ely Place on a weekday before 10pm.
B. M.
We really like this pub... The landlady and her staff are some of the friendliest you will find. Nice setting, pity it closes at 11pm on a Friday enough for some I guess!
A. H.
Lovely old school pub, cask ales and pork scratchings
S.
One of the oldest pubs in London, quaint, charming and warm. If you're into architecture, it still maintains certain features from the 16th century. If you're around Holborn, don't give this a miss.
J. R.
Really quirky little pub just off Diagon Alley. Standard Fullers beers, which are all ok but nothing special. Didn't eat but expect the food to be distinctly average.
J. K.
What a fantastic Olde pub , a little on the small side but so much to be seen on a short visit ..
A Fuller's house , so real ale is of the best order.. Meals are are of a reasonable order & not too expensive..
A pub I will return to in the not too distant future ?.
M. S.
Very traditional old pub in London.
M. B.
Nice people. Good beer price for London. Classic but well maintained pub. Clean toilets. Nice outside drinking area
J. A.
Located in a narrow alley between Ely Place and Hatton Garden, this is a small pub with an old-times feel. In addition to pints they serve some small dishes, good for sharing.
d. c.
Lovely pint of Pride 🍺
N. K.
It’s the oldest pub in London some 200 years old... it’s like a house with a couple of rooms in a narrow lane. Be their and experience some good beers
T. H.
Affordable place. Amazing services. Great atmosphere. Great collection of drinks. Bar section was amazing. I liked wide selection of drinks. Services was great. Staff were friendly.
P. W.
Great pub, would definitely go back. The staff were also brilliant. The style of beers on tap could be a bit more varied though.
e. R.
Pub is great. The only fault is the service is so slooooowww! be prepared to wait 10min in line at peak times. Not acceptable even for a small pub. Peak times are expected so something could be done to speed things up.
R. W.
Good beer, good atmosphere!!
E. R.
Lovely old pub well hidden away. Good beers and a friendly welcome. Food is ok but limited to toasties and the like.
S. B.
Wonderful old world pub hidden away down an alley off Hatton Garden. Great atmosphere, good beer, friendly staff.
J. N.
Tiny yet very popular bar hidden away. Popular with the after work crew. Good selection of ales and beers on tap plus bottled drinks. Has bar snacks too
M. B.
A land issue meant that this pub was technically part of Cambridgeshire until the early twentieth century, so the Mitre makes a slightly dubious claim to be London’s oldest. Still, Elizabeth I was rumoured to have danced round the cherry tree that once stood outside, so why not emulate her and have a boogie with your ale of choice? (by Secretldn)
I. S.
Charming pub full of character & history. Loved their Plum Porter... hope this drink becomes a regular in the menue & not just a "guest" drink 😉
C. K.
What an epic pub. 10 out of 10
N. B.
The experience of finding this place makes it worth a visit for location and character alone. They also serve a selection of good Ale.
Nice in the summer, the bar is very small but dating from 1546 its a great English pub
R. P.
Great staff, always lovely place to meet for pre dinner drink
M. W.
Although the range of beers is not too impressive, they're well kept and most importantly, this is one of the best and most iconic pubs in London. They do a Camra discount as well.
J. S.
Tucked away pub that's a bit old worldly and higgledy-piggledy. Good for mid-sized group gatherings upstairs. In terms of side it can get quite crowded, particularly in summer. A cosy experience!
M. B.
THIS IS ANOTHER OF THE OLDEST PUBS IN
LONDON YOU WILL FIND IT IN ELY PLACE HOLBORN LONDON.GREAT LITTLE PUB BEING
SMALL YOU OFTEN FIND MORE OUTSIDE THAN IN,HOWEVER WE ALWAYS MANAGED. THE ALE WAS TOPS, AND THE FOOD GREAT,A LOT OF THE
HOTEL WORKERS USED THIS PLACE THAT WAS
NICELY HIDDEN IN ELY PLACE, DONT MISS IT IF YOU GO TO LONDON.
ADDING A SECOND PIC,ITS A SMALL PUB,BUT WELL WORTH A VISIT,I WAS TOLD RECENTLY BY
A FRIEND,WHO PAID A VISIT,THE FOOD AND ALE
WAS TIP TOP
K. M.
nice tucked away pub with a tidy little courtyard outdoor space. Only qualm would be it's a little compact inside so not ideal inside for larger groups
W. P.
Nice traditional pub with good beer, friendly staff and space to stand outside. It can get pretty smelly if you are in the standing area outside the toilets, though.
C. D.
One of London's finest historic pubs. Good place to bump into tourists and impress them with your knowledge of London's finest historic pubs.
H. P.
A gem of a pub in Holborn area. Snack food is enjoyable and the real ale well kept. More often than not I've found myself standing outside in the little lane as it is already full.
A. C.
Great little pub. Go for the people and atmosphere, that's what is getting my 5⭐s. It's a Fuller's pub so beer selection is boringly standard.
T. W.
A tiny little place with a very long history. Tucked down a small alley way at the Holborn circus end of Hatton garden, you can easily walk past Ye Olde Mitre without realising it was there - but don't this place is a bit of gem.
Ok its too small, ok you usually end up standing with your beer in the alley way. But the beer is good, they have a good few decent beers & the place is full of character.
K. C.
This pub is not open every day and it's tucked away up a alleyway. It was a lovely little pub. The staff were really friendly.
H. H.
Lovely place for a quick grab of beer 🍻
K. L.
This is a great pub to experience history and one of 5 pubs I went to on my old pub tour of this part of London. Well worth the visit.
P. W.
Lovely Fullers pub
D. W.
Great character and charming location just off Hatton Gardens. Not a huge drinks selection but the beer I've had there has always been good.
K. J.
Great old pub from 1546, real atmosphere!
S. D.
Love this place not just that's it's my local but the old and authentic and the traditional all in one and not mention Judith, the landlady keeps it all going.
r. m.
great little pub with good beer. has air conditioning. can be hard to find its the first right down the alley on hatton garden. (ProTip, its the alley with the bishops hat above the door)
D. S.
Almost 500 year old bar. Eliz 1 was a patron. Too cool. 6 stars.
A. C.
An iconic hidden gem, if you like the old man's pub vibe. Good beer in a cosy pub.
J. M.
One of the best pubs in London.
P. P.
Often described as the hardest pub to find in London, the Mitre is located through a narrow passageway off Hatton Garden. The first Mitre Tavern was built in 1547 fort the servants of the Bishop of Ely, but the present building dates from around 1772.
I. B.
Good beer and service, opens at 11:00.
R. C. H.
Lovely ancient Tudor interior olde England country type pub snugged down a tiny alley. Magical. Great ales. Also offer cheap finger food! What more to ask!
J. B.
Old school pub. Really great place. Has the feel of a pirate bar from the older days. Small bar in between 2 small rooms.
C. X.
Really cute pub located in between two office buildings, easy to miss when walking and not looking for it.
Nice prices, good selection of beers and ales.
P. R.
Great hidden away ancient London boozer. Decor needs a refresh and they could liven the food up however the scotch eggs are perfect.
G. E.
Great pub one of if not the oldest in London dating back to the 16th century. Fantastic selection of beers also.
R. L.
Very nice pub. Great barman, who helped me pick a nice beer.
S. S.
This is a hidden GEM between all the busy streets in Holborn, and after a sailing theory class probably the best place to have a Seafarers English Ale
k. b.
Cosy pub, great beer even better wine.
After a walk the toasted ham and onion sarnies are welcoming
S. H.
This was the first pub I had a drink in when I started work on Hatton garden in 1977 and it has not changed much since then
Good selection of drinks and they serve toasted sandwiches and snacks - selection of food not huge but for a small pub more than adequate
It is a very small pub and historic well worth a visit
Must be one of the only pubs left with outside wc for the men
Ladies get the comfort of interior wc but only if they don't mind climbing some steep steps
Worth a visit
D. E.
One of the oldest surviving pubs in London. Great character, old school pub food for snacks and is tucked away. One of a kind these days.
N. F.
Lovely quaint little pub tucked away in a tiny back alley. Claims to be the oldest in London and who am I to argue. A hidden gem.
M. M.
Gorgeous, cosy, classy-yet-stylish pub in the heart of London's office district. You can't be around there and not have a pint.
M. S.
The oldest pub in London I recon. You have to be there once. It is hidden in the city but very pretty ones you inside a yard. Admirable!
E. M.
Amazing historical pub. Good beer and toast sandwiches. Also amazing atmosphere and good service.
M. C.
Small, secluded, and oh so British. Drop by this historic little hole in the wall for your last pint (if that's possible before 11pm).
s. M.
A historic tiny pub just down an alley off Hatton Garden with a superb selection of real ales all served in excellent condition.
S. H.
Nice quirky old place - bit of a bugger to find! Down an alleyway inbetween Ely Place and the main road. Seemed very expensive but I'm assured by my London friend that it was 'reasonable'..
A. R.
Good selection of beers, seems fresh and clean. Friendly locals. Loads of atmosphere. More than worth a visit.
H. T.
Beautiful old pub with great beer and pub snacks. Only issue is the steep stairs to the ladies toilets which my mum found hard going.
M. P.
Very Quirky little pub, land was granted the a local clergyman by the monarchy however the pub due to the way lawas were applied belonged to the dioceses of Ely. Therefore technically if laws were broken on site the London police had to call reinforcements from Ely to settle the disupute.
Tucked away from the hustle & bustle of Hatton Garden, very narrow.
V. A.
Kiss the walls. Place is historic and pints are delicious.
K. D.
If you're looking for a classic London pub, you've come to the right place. Nestled down a small alley, it's a great place to grab a pint.
P. H.
Love the pub and the 5 star beer is brilliant
T. B.
Great little pub in London that has a ton of history. Friendly staff and great beers on draught
S. Y.
Small and interestingly well decorated cozy little pub hiding in the back alley. The entrance has just one small sign and a corridor into the alleyway.
N. D.
The oldest pub in London. Re-ferbed twice before the great fire of London in 1666.
Cody, good ale
K. P.
Nice pub
F. W.
Very old pub, full of atmosphere and good beers. A hidden gem tucked away down an alley
M. D.
Very busy in the bars and the restricted area outside but a good selection of beers on tap and the post-work rush did eventually die down.
A. V.

Great cosy hidden pub. Even when people are looking for it they often can't find it. Sausage rolls are yum especially with a pulled beer.
K. T.
Cute pub, can't speak for the food menu as they had barely anything available. Drinks were good and value for money.

Bears a date of 1546 on the sign, the pub originated as a watering hole for the workers at the London residence of the Bishops of Ely. St. Etheldreda's Church around the corner is a remnant of that, and until part way through the 20th century the surrounding area, including the pub, were considered to be part of Cambridgeshire. The current building dates to the late 1700s and most of the interior is from the 1930s.
M. W.
Cracking old boozer. Recommend the tapas. Our baby was allowed during the day although there was some confusion about this among staff.

Fullers was London's last big family Brewers and pub chain ,so it's a Damn shame the Fullers management have decided to sell off their Griffin brewery in Chiswick,a very short sighted decision which will damage their brand !
