Reviews of Pepper Box Inn
S. H.
Great little characterful pub/restaurant out in the country. Best to book as it’s very popular. Have eaten here a few times now and it’s been a good venue for family and friends gatherings. Good selection of food and some daily specials.
Sizzle platter is good as are the pub classics. Good selection of real ales.
W. M.
Very old and intimate building with lovely original features. Good selection of beers and excellent food. Friendly staff.
M. L.
A very nice Nut Roast with all the trimmings. Cauliflower cheese was lovely. Nice location, great staff and a fair price. I can see why it is so popular! A must for any Sunday Roast fan!
A. W.
Had lunch today. Very friendly and helpful staff.
Excellent good quality food for a reasonable price.
Very good atmosphere with good parking
Great beer.
S. W.
What a gorgeous little pub. Great menu and such friendly and fun staff. Looking forward to my next visit 😊
S. W.
We're from the U.S. and visited family near here. Great food! Good service and reasonable prices. Thanks for a lovely evening!
S. C.
Visited in August 2019, so apologies for the late review. As I was staying away from home working evening shifts I couldn't stay and enjoy the atmosphere (and the food) for as long as I would have liked, but will certainly be returning if I'm ever in the area again.
The staff were incredibly polite, welcoming and friendly. I was given some tasty complimentary bread and butter, which I very happily gobbled down. The curry was a special of the day and was absolutely delicious! The meat was generous (not gristly and full of fat but melted in the mouth) and it was well-spiced, with a nice heat and plenty of flavour. The poppadom was crisp and the rice fluffy. Quite happily finished the lot.

Our visit to the pepperbox inn is our monthly treat . The inn has a lovely relaxed atmosphere with staff who are professional and attentive . The roaring fire is wonderful in the bar area . The menu is balanced with different choices for all tastes all excellently cooked with the specials board making choice very difficult . The inn is a must visit , highly recommended.
J. S.
Really good Sunday roast, good value for money compared to some pub lunches, very nice atmosphere and also dog friendly would deffinatley go again.
A. H.
Superb as always, good menu. Top pub/restaurant for atmosphere. A real pub not pretentious.
G. J.
We have never been to The Pepperbox and had anything but a wonderful meal and last night was no exception. The Festive menu was divine and as always the staff super friendly.
H. S.
Had an excellent lunch here. Very good menu choice and first class staff. Looking forward to our next visit.
S. J.
Fantastic! Good atmosphere as busy. Quaint place. Great food. Nice staff. Can't wait to go back! Thank you

Pepoerbox has in all the years I've been here NEVER failed me. The roasts are piping hot and fresh and so tasty and decent portions. The service is brilliant. The setting is picturesque...a perfect typical traditional English pub experience. True quality ❤️
R. W.
A pretty little pub on the edge of a tiny Kent village overlooking farmland. It has a small public bar, a number of indoor tables for dining and a reasonable sized beer garden. They have a good a la carte menu and another smaller menu with more standard pub food. The food quality was very good and the staff were friendly and amenable. Recommended.
J. M.
Best roast dinner ever ! Good value and always good food .
B.
Exceptional food, only exceeded by their hosting skills.
M. H.
The food is good and the service is out of this world you could not get better service.
The prices come high to low
M. C.
Lovely country pub, value for money food large portions recommend a visit
J. K.
What a place, good honest food, lovely atmosphere, great service, hidden gem. I would come back for sure ! And open fire 🔥

I had the opportunity to visit the renowned Pepperbox Inn this evening... a 16th century Inn steeped in history and intrigue.. The "Box" as I (and many friends) like to refer it as, has been a favourite for some 40 years now. One knows (if you are a previous guest) what to expect, but no matter how many times you duck down and enter through the old oak door and into the warmth and serenity of the bar, it never fails to bring a smile and a glow to me, knowing I am about to embark on a great evening....
Starting with a Guinness that tastes as good as it would in the Emerald isle.. (they really do care about their beers here... many pubs these days fail to wash the lines through... the Box does it religiously and is well known for its well-kept ales)..the lamb kebabs were a great starter and could serve as a tasty main... however, the Baked Cod with fried kale, mash and chorizo cannelloni beans was sublime...a truly delicious dish... the only complaint I had was with myself as I failed to finish.. such a wholesome and filling dish... and washed down with a few glasses of very fine El Coto Rioja...made for a most fantastic meal..
Times have been tough for the Box ( and all pubs recently).. Sop'ha ( as she is sometimes called...or the Sunset 🌇 Princess 👸) developed the take away menu which was and remains enormously successful, and has adapted well and maintains a very sound and confident approach to CoVID rules... and despite all the chaos around us at the moment.... the one thing that never slips.. ever.. is the quality.. quality of food, drink, atmosphere, service, and the staff... saying its first class more than ticks the box.. but its better than that by some way....
Just great once again and look forward to returning very soon to try the Lamb and spinach madras curry.. which I am told is crafted by a famous Nepalese chef.... I doubt I will be disappointed
Thanks to Sophie, Jean, Amy, Kim, Preeti, Charlie, Charlie2, Molly and her twin sister, and everybody else... your doing an amazing 👏 job in difficult times..x
A.
Very nice food. Good service and atmosphere
b.
had sausage with gravy, curry, brie cheese sandwich, then fudge cake with icecream. It was perfect.
E. R.
Abosolutely gorgeous. Inside and outside. The food was delicious. We all had a roast dinner's and desert. My daughter has Coeliacs disease and so has to have gluten free options. Pepperbox were very accommodating to this. She was able to have a roast dinner with gluten free yorkshire puddings and gravy. For desert she wanted the poached pear crumble, which they happily served without the crumble part. She wanted a hot chocolate after and I said that I could scan the bar code if they weren't sure, so she brought out the pot of cocoa for me to scan. This was our first meal out since my daughter's diagnosis and it was a little nerve racking. Feeling as though you're being awkward when asking for things a certain way but the staff were amazing and very understanding. They were always happy to check something if they weren't sure. I hope all our meals out in the future are as easy as today. Thank you so much.
J. B.
Excellent pub. Great views. Great beer. Excellent food. Super nice staff. Keep up the good work.
K. F. L.
Lovely pub and location for a country walk before or after a pub lunch... open fire to..
V. S.
Lovely food. Great atmosphere and friendly staff
M. K.
A pretty country pub, I was supprised how busy it was at a lunch time in the week, although I didn't eat there from the comments from the people around it seems the food is done well
R. S.
Excellent food, drinks and service, as always.
H. P.
Rural setting. Olde worlde beautiful pub. Great beers. Great food. Not too far off the motorway but a world away.
J. H.
Great pub. No high chairs for babies though. Food was incredible.
T. S.
Top pub Sunday lunch was excellent 👌
Highly recommend
J. L.
Cycled here from London and it was well worth the journey. It’s a charming 15th-century country pub with friendly staff, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and some cracking food to match (the nut roast was absolutely spot on). If that’s not all, you also get incredible views across the Kent landscape from the outside seating area. Would recommend to weary travellers in a heartbeat.
S. B.
Very nice lunch and reasonably priced nice relaxing country pub very friendly.
C. T.
I visited the Pepper Box with friends and I really enjoyed my meal It was a Thursday lunchtime and it was busy and there was a good atmosphere
S. P.
It's a lovely pub and the food looked great, I was a little disappointed with the way we were greeted when we arrived, very cold and uninterested in our customer.
D. S.
Delicious food and helpful staff enjoyed the cozy atmosphere
J.
Visited here for the first time for a family get-together. Excellent food and service. The restaurant is quaint and very popular, and therefore was crowded when we were there, but this did not spoil our enjoyment.
P. R.
Had a lovely Sunday lunch. Great food and service.
W. T.
Food could have been warmer when served
M. V.
Great country pub with fantastic views and good food.
r. h.
A beautiful pub in a stunning location , plenty of parking ,If I had had one minor criticism I would say the pub is more laid out for diner's so drinkers have to either sit at the bar' no problem' or wait until the one available seat becomes available.
G. H.
Visited this pub by chance after a walk around Harrietsham. It was very busy for lunch and we managed to get one of the last tables outside. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food we had was excellent... fish finger baguette with chips. A real gem and well worth another visit.
M. H.
Great little country pub with good selection of tasty food at reasonable prices. Beer garden with lots of tables.
C. C.
This place was just as we'd hoped for. A lovely walk from Welsummer camping through orchards, woods and fields led us to this fine pub/eatery. The staff that served us were very polite and helpful. As we have 2 dogs we sat outside ( though dogs are welcome inside providing its not too busy). The food is all cooked fresh and waiting time is better than reasonable. Beautiful meals both Thursday and Friday lunchtime.
J. M.
Lovely, traditional old style wood beamed pub.
Stopped for Sunday lunch, really good quality roast dinner.
Great service and friendly staff.
L. R.
Very lovely place with a lovely beer garden where you can have a nice meal with nice flowers around. Food was tasty and the waitress was very accommodating to a gluten intolerance diet, very knowledgeable and had our minds at ease. Tasty food, not cheap but the portions are worth it. Will return for sure! Safe seating with enough social distance.
R. S. (.
Loved the food and good large outside area. Dog friendly
£6.10 a pint is a bit steep tho..
B. B.
A very good lunch it was better than most, will definitely be returning
W. C. C.
great pub with great food. very cosy and typical british pub, staff are super friendly. food is very good sized portions and tasty!
M. F.
Brilliant, didn't book but got a table in the garden. Quick service, lovely food and friendly service 😋
j. p.
A sunny evening spent eating lovely food admiring the butterflies landing on my shoulder. Lovely atmosphere and food. They only need Harvey's Best Bitter to complete the perfect experience.
Z. H.
One of the best meals we’ve had since moving to UK 5 months ago from New York. What a hidden gem, blown away, floored
W.
Another amazing pub and restaurant. We've had some delicious Sunday roasts around Kent, but this was easily one of the best. Superbly prepared, full sized portions and outstanding staff. Beautiful interior, fireplace and atmosphere too. We'll be going regularly from now on. ♥
R. H.
Really delicious food, nice beer and a great English country pub look and feel. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening here and I can't wait to go back. The steak & kidney pudding is one of the best I've ever had!
M. B.
Beautiful, traditional country pub. Really enjoyed the steak burger I had from the Sunday menu. Booking is a must, as this is a very popular place.
N. B.
Fitted in at short notice , we enjoyed our food , the service was impeccable and the price more than fair . Catered wonderfully for severe gluten allergy . Definitely a thumbs up
A. E.
Super food loads of choices brilliantly cooked. Service was fabulously friendly. What a great old pub in stunning countryside. Unmissable. It’s also got a large car park and a pretty outside eating and seating garden.
L. C.
Love this pub. I'm amazed I haven't reviewed it before. We've been using the pub for several years and love the food, setting, garden, menu and staff. It's the first time we've ventured put for months and made the right choice by going here. It was busy without being packed and still the same brilliant service. Thank you.
R. B.
Discovered while delivering there a few weeks ago. Recommended! Good food and nice atmosphere 😊
C. W.
Had a lovely anniversary meal with 2 friends. The food was delicious and the service really good.
L. T.
Lovely country pub. Gorgeous open fire, friendly staff and good food. Plenty of onsite parking. What's not to like!
T. B.
A great pub with real character & a blazing open fireplace to cheer one up on a cold winter's day. But please don't visit JUST in the winter. Delicious food, well kept beer & friendly welcome awaits you all the year round. No wonder its so busy on a Wednesday lunchtime!
T. O.
This is a lovely little gem of a place food is amazing and staff are so nice highly recommend 👍
M. R.
A nice rustic pub. Very reasonably priced drinks and food. The pub is quite small so I recommend booking during busy periods. The food was very nice with a good selection and they catered to dietary requirements. Staff were friendly. If you are just there for drinks there is a lovely open fire. It can be a bit cold on some places as the walls are a bit drafty so request a table away from the door if possible
G. D.
Found this little gem of a pub completely by chance while roaming the Kent countryside. The beer garden offers beautiful scenic views. We had Sunday roast there. The staff was very helpful and friendly. My wife said this was the best Sunday roast she ever had.
M. H.
Beautiful surroundings, wonderful food & great service.
D. M.
I've always enjoyed visiting this pub for its food, beer and service. I brought a party of walkers here (pre-booked) expecting only about 10 of which would want food - which is quite normal - but 25 indicated their desire to dine before we set off. With only two and a half hours notice of my call to confirm the numbers, the pub coped admirably with the extras and the staff were very pleasant throughout.
K. M.
Quaint pub staff were friendly.. food was good I had a curry dish that they did gluten free and dairy free..
P. J.
A proper country pub, the staff, the beer and the food were fantastic, cosy up to a real log fireworks a snack ora 3 coarse meal, will definitely be visiting again soon.
F. A. V.
Lovely country pub with great views, food was great and reasonably priced too! Cosy inside especially if you can get the sofas by the open fire and in summer the outside area means dining with spectacular views. Plenty of parking spaces.
S. C.
Great food! Can highly recommend the duck. Enjoyed reading about the history of the pub. Only thing I'd change would be the chocolate mousse - there was too much and it was just a bit too rich. Two of us shared that and the creme brulee but both struggled with the mousse.
W. S.
Very friendly staff food lovely price wise bit more expensive than some pubs but worth it. Very relaxing meal will definitely be going again. We went for lunch with friends.
M. L.
A great, great pub. Excellent food and beer. Wonderful service.
K. H.
Love this pub, great food, beer and staff...can't fault it and as its my local I'm a very lucky person 😍
E. S.
Amazing food, really enjoyed the thai mussels for starters. The staff were a little slow serving but it was a busy weekend lunch hour, so fair's fair. Beautiful setting and lovely garden to sit and enjoy the views.
T. F.
Booked for. dinner at late notice. Great traditional pub food. All cooked to order and excellent quality. Well kept beers. Prices are good value, this is a nice place so not cheap but not the most expensive either and great for the quality of the food.
A. B.
Had a takeaway last night. Really easy to order and the pickup was really slick. The food was amazing and the lovely staff were very friendly. Will definitely order again.
J. B.
Have been a few times and always say will go again (and will) but really depends who is serving to how welcoming it feels. Mostly a dining place as drinking only area is quite small, just a few tables. One is next to a lovely fireplace though. Food here is AMAZING. Recommend. Dog friendly in drinking area.
J. E.
I absolutely love going to this pub. Never been for a social visit, always work related but get excited when I know I am going there for work. The place is stunning, the people are lovely and it is generally a nice place
F. M.
A very enjoyable experience - and meal!
R. H.
First time experience was great. The seabass was well presented.
K. P.
Quite simply superb, had the Christmas menu for our work's Christmas outing and it's probably the best we have had in years. The service was excellent as was the atmosphere. Will definitely recommend and will return for another meal with friends and family. Thank you.
M. D.
Excellent food and friendly efficient service at a lovely country pub.
M. C.
Situated in the countryside this pub had a very good ambience with an open fire and comfortable seating. I wasn't so impressed with the meal I had. The fish was overcooked and the vegetables were straight out of a freezer pack and not particularly appetising.
L. D.
Visiting family in Bearsted the 4 of us decided to eat out. My brother in law had eaten in the Pepperbox a few years ago. He rang them and was told they had a table. The menu had a variety of dishes. 2 of us had fish specials and 2 had the chicken sizzler. Bread and butter was brought up before the meal, very nice, walnut bread and we felt maybe sourdough bread. Presentation of food very good and the main delicious. Desserts were also very good, key lime cheesecake and whipped cream and creme brulee with 2 shortbread biscuits. Drinks good. Overall an excellent choice of venue to eat and fairly priced. Staff very attentive and venue very pleasant. Will certainly eat there again.
l. b.
Perfect country pub. Great land lady and staff. Delicious food. Good beer. Fabulous views.
P. N.
Lovely country pub with a wonderful menu that is equalled by the lovely flavour. First time visit last night and was impressed with the quality of the food and service.
c. h.
Good food and good staff hope to go back soon to enjoy it all over again.....
R. V.
It's a great pub with a lovely local clientele. Good beer, very good food and friendly helpful staff. Last time we were there, enjoying eating al fresco, we stayed on and they were closing up and asked if any of us needed the loo before they shut. Great!
1.
Fantastic take away roast dinner. The meat, the potatoes and the rest of the trimmings were second to none. Thank you to the whole team at the Pepper Box. We will hopefully see you soon for a sit in meal!
A. A.
Wonderful food. Nice warm atmosphere and staff were brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed it there.
P. G.
Traditional Kentish pub though gone a bit upmarket as have many to survive or profit . Food is good, though it's not cheap, and good selection of real ales. Sitting by the the open fire in winter is sublime. Have visited many times over the past 10 years and would highly recommend.
S. J.
Lovely pit stop for a drink, the starters were lovely too and we sat outside overlooking the views watching the sun set. The mains were only ok.
P. R.
Great Sunday lunch and service.
A. H.
Expats from Melbourne visiting one of our favourite pubs in Kent with good friends and were over the moon to see it hasn't changed since we left in 2009. The pub itself is picture perfect, the food is fantastic, beer great, staff friendly under the watchful eye of their owner. Always a must if you want to visit the traditional Kentish pub 😃😃👍🍺🍷👏
L. W.
After a week long holiday on the Norfolk Broads, and not wanting to cook when we got home the fish and chips were excellent 👌
My Father said they were the best he has ever had.... and at 84 he's had a few.
P. D.
Friendly service...good well cooked food...wonderful ambience...very popular and deservedly so..!
T. J.
Delicious food, lovely country pub, fab staff. Well worth a trip to the country. We'll definitely be back!
s. b.
Love, love, love The Pepperbox! Just had the most incredible Thai king prawn curry ever - Just so good to be back inside the pub!
S. G. (.
Very nice pub with cozy atmosphere. The food served is really good and well presented. Price in my opinion is medium range.
J. L.
Great pub great location and the food is wonderful. Never had to complain about food or service. I only took one off of facilities because they do not cater for children inside which is a shame.
O. L.
A proper pub with friendly, knowledgeable staff which serves excellent beer and food. No flashing machines nor intrusive music, just a homely atmosphere with leather sofas in front of a roaring log fire! The best home made steak and kidney pudding I've ever eaten with wonderful sautéed potatoes (so rare these days anywhere) and freshly made English mustard. The Pepper Box is simply a revelation.
P. S.
One of the nicest pub meals for a long time. Highly recommend the steak and kidney pudding....
g. k.
Great food and friendly staff 👌🏻
E. S.
Very oldie worldly inside, with beams and iglenook fireplaces. Felt comfortable and welcoming.
In addition to the traditional pub food, a good selection of other food was on the menu.
s.
Lovely olde worlde pub with an excellent menu, proven by the number of diners for a mid week lunch. Friendly staff and a nice ambience. We will return!
K. P.
Very friendly staff. Food was really good.
P. M. (.
Great location with excellent Sunday lunch
A. W.
Best Inn around. Really good food and I mean good. Very good, friendly staff. Best county Inn I have been in. Strongly recommend anyone to visit. Have to book. Best Sunday lunch ever.
S. S.
Thank you so much for being so helpful and prepare a delicious vegan dish for me! The coconut milk mushrooms stroganoff was lovely, and so was the service! I was already prepared to have the usual chips but I was pleasantly surprised! Thank you all :)
D. A.
Excellent food, lovely atmosphere and excellent service. Want to go again.
S. C.
Classic country inn with good food and real ales. Don’t keep the landlady waiting though.
J. J.
Food was delicious. Menu was varied. The staff were friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend to a friend.
G. H.
Fantastic food and lovely setting. My daughter did not like the vegetarian option on the menu, so they cooked something else especially for her which she loved.
G. H.
Food good but prices rather high for a pub. For their prices I would at least expect tablecloths and cushioned seats. Staff were friendly.
J. P.
Beautiful little pub with really nice food 👌
g. k.
Always good service lovely pub really nice grub.
R. T.
Lost its shine over the years pretty standard pub food you can get anywhere with much better quality and flare available elsewhere. Ales and wines decent though and good for summer outside.
A. C.
Great pub, fantastic outside area with mega views of the Weald, Food is really good and well priced, Beers and ciders are fantastic also. Well worth a visit.
R. P.
Wonderful old pub in a country atmosphere.
l. w.
Great food, Great service and a wonderful country pub feel
j. c.
Beautiful pub, fantastic staff.
The only let down was the toilets were freezing cold and the hand dryers sent good enough to dry your hands.
D. W.
Love this place. Staff are fantastic. Food is lovely. Reasonably priced. Beautiful views especially on a nice summer evening. Love it love it.
R. W.
Did not eat here - but will do. However Geoff Pemble the landlord is a person in a million. I awoke him at 0200 to ask if he could tow me out of a snowdrift 500 yards from the Inn. I had been stuck there for 5 hours and Geoff came out with his Suzuki Jimmy and towed me out. Not only that he assisted me with directions through the lanes to Maidstone to ensure that I didn't get stuck again!!! Geoff was a gentleman and a star and I would thoroughly recommend The Peppercorn Inn. Many thanks Geoff - very much appreciated.
S. G.
Fantastic tasty food. Friendly staff. All set in an old cosy country pub.
