This was my first time coming here. I loved it. The food was plentiful, delicious and new. On top of this the decor is dark but atmospheric, with a dim light setting the mood. You are greeted with tasteful music, which gives off very good vibes. I could not recommend this more, it also has free pool on Wednesdays.

Few Friday afternoon drinks and games of pool. If you really like pool then it's not really for you the tables have been used that much they are tired and out of level. Food was good and a great selection of drinks, the usuals you would expect, but a lack of beer choices. The staff were ok and professional but always came across as though they didn't want to be there and it showed in their personality. The ultimate question is, If I was going in to Manchester again would I go in there. If I was with a load of Male friends I would call in for a game of pool and a beer but would it stay, it's not my thing but many would find it great which I can understand. I like more traditional pubs. If I was with my wife, I would ask her first and see what she said but would rather not. I think you need to judge for yourself to be honest I think it's a personal preference. One final note. It's clean and generally had a good atmosphere.

Very tiny events room. I could smell rat urine 🤮🤮🤮. The guys at the bar were very quick to process the orders, though felt that the drinks were very expensive. Toilets are weird as they're for both genders, found myself bumping into ladies as I exited (whilst trying to sort out my junk 🤦🏾‍♂️) Brace yourself for parking, it's not cheap at the Northern Quarter.

The Black Dog Ballroom is a fantastic place to go for a variety of drinks. The staff I met were universally friendly and, although I'm probably older than their usual clientele, I didn't feel alienated in the slightest. The only criticism I couldn't place was that the music could have been quieter, but that's probably just me and my ageing eardrums 🤯 Thank you for a really enjoyable evening.

we recently for a pub crawl trying bourbon in different NQ pubs/bars, everywhere was on the £10 Mark for 2 singles and bdb was on the £12 Mark, it came in a tiny tumbler, and just seemed crazy that they would charge more than everywhere else. I do love the fact they have late licence and the pool tables are a bonus when you can rent one. Atmosphere is usually good here too.

I love salt and pepper but it is too dark in here it makes me wonder if the owner is frightened of moths and that's why they don't have the lights on??

Definition of a Dive Bar. It STANK like a toilets, I'm assuming some drainage problem and it can be fixed cos that's gotta be driving off customers. Food was similar to what you'd find from a market place, served in cardboard boxes. Not what I expected. Food was average until I found a hard piece of something in my food. Staff said it was a hard piece of batter and offered to make me more food but it put me off at that point. Should have been offered a refund really. The aesthetic is dark and if you want cheap cocktails and to play pool then its perfect for you. I wouldn't go again personally.

It's been almost 3 years I was at the Black Dog Ballroom, as I live in London, however what I do remember was me and my good mate having a fantastic time here, the staff were nice, the food was nice, pool table was good and the prices were very reasonable (well any Londoner would say that about prices in the North 🤣) once I return to Manchester I will be coming here often. Had a really good experience at a party here but there was one male waiter who seemed quite arrogant- female bar staff were lovely though and the event room was really nice. Food was excellent from salt and pepper ,, couldn't get enough!

Great vibe in this place, good music, fab cocktails, lovely friendly staff. We were in on a bank holiday Monday (evening), so probably quieter than it would be on the weekend I'd imagine (with people being back at work the next day). It was perfect for sitting and chatting on our night out.

Highly rate this place! Decent prices on drinks but most importantly it's very high quality pool, where it's pay-by-the-hour rather than per game so makes it great value and all the equipment is to a high standard. It's also open super late every day so can't go wrong!

We went here for a works Christmas party. There were about 14 of us and we had their premium buffet. There was so much food it was unbelievable. It was all really good and it was nice to sit / stand around a table chatting and eating rather than sitting down at a formal dinner. We were able to get some time on a pool table as well which was good.

I was here on a works Christmas do. Great venue with lots of rooms. Multiple bars, dance floor, pool tables. But best of all a retro arcade with quite a few arcade cabinets, pinball tables and retro consoles. This proved really popular and I spent most my time in there as it was on free to play. We got quite a few free drinks which was good. But price of drinks at the bar did seem a little on the high price. Otherwise it would be 5 starts. Great venue to hire out for private functions and would recommend it. Great access for busses, parking and not far fir trams and trains.

I had been there monday mid day for a date with my boyfriend and we were served by a very friendly, efficient professional young man.. I received such quality service and the food was amazing, lush portions, well presented too.. I decided to go back this Monday for my birthday and was disappointed. staff were very laid back unhelpful and when I asked the young man behind the bar about his other work colleague, I was not impressed with his response. I took my other friends here for my birthday expecting the same service and the young man who served me on my previous visit but alas... I did not catch the other young man name but he wore a black snapback and looks like James Franco..bring him back!

Been here a couple of times but and it's always been good. Quick, efficient service both times. First visit was in the evening and my second visit was midday. I ordered some snacks on my second visit and they arrived in good time and were presented and tasted good. It's clean and tidy and if you fancy a game of pool there are Bank of 5 or 6 tables all in a row. Very close to the Arndale shopping centre and Victoria train station.

Been here both on a Saturday night and Sunday afternoon for a bottomless brunch. Two very different experiences but both great. The bottomless brunch is ridiculously good value for money and one of the best things about the place is that they stock one of the most famous Finnish drinks called "lonkero" (gin long drink) that you can't get anywhere else outside of Finland.

Good for a night out. Prices for playing pool are pretty reasonable but the bar prices are a little high. Not a place for buying rounds unless you have a bottomless wallet. All staff are friendly and good songs are played by the DJ.

I really like this place. Especially for half price food on Mondays. The food is good at normal prices, but its a steal at 50% off. Try the burger with four meats and the sweet potato wedges, super yummy. They also have pool in the back, which is a nice way to break up the week. They turn off the lights when your time is up, which is a little passive aggressive, but they are usually pretty nice otherwise.

Great spot for lunch. The burger beef patties are one of the best I've ever had! Really tender, melt in the mouth and not too dry like they often are. The sauce was brilliantly matched. The price is also exceptional. Really haven't had a burger this good in a long while. Enough said.

Really nice, social atmosphere. Bit of a speakeasy feel to it, with pool tables at the back, bar in the centre and plenty of seating all around. It stays open till at least 3am each night, even on a Sunday into Monday morning - so it's a trusty place to go if you find yourself out into the early hours. Nice cocktail offers at certain times; I think the beer prices could be a little bit more competitive for the area at at least £4 a pint for euro lager.

Went in on a random school night over a year ago with a friend for some food and a couple of drinks, manager (I am presuming) came over and spoke to us and had a laugh. Food was lovely and atmosphere was great. Went up to pay and the manager had given us 20% off our food bill. Excellent customer service and would most definitely return! Keep up the good work!

Had a family function here My faults were the music system was not great, very quite and not loud at all It would be nice if you could bring own food if hiring the venue but you have to order what is on their menu, which tastes quite basic. Venue is nice though, roof top view was great. Staff members cool and it's big and spacey. The small bar needed air conditioning as the box room is tiny and could barely breathe.

At around £5 for an hour of pool you can't go wrong in here! The name is apparently from when the owner used to bring their dog in, which gives it a cute back story, and the bar is generally great to go in for some pool and drinks with friends. Really good place to go, have a few Rekorderligs and play a few games. The speakeasy style of bar is nice too, and is comforting and not too trendy. Their success and good quality speaks for itself though in that they've now got several bars and venues open across Manchester.

I love this place to have a few beers (or vodka and tonic) and knock a few games of pool. I have never tried their food but have mouth-watering ambitions to do so. The problem is that I have usually already eaten when I hit this place later in the night and just want a few drinks and play some pool. Another cool aspect is that they place really nice R&B on a friday and saturday night so one can get wasted, not give a hoot and move those hips!

Considering this place is more of a pool hall than a restaurant, I was quite surprised by how great the food is here! On my last visit I got a slider trio, and my girlfriend got a chicken burger, and both were way nicer than we were expecting. Not to mention, for the price, you get a *lot* of food! Shame their beer selection is a little bit lacking, but despite that, if you fancy something a bit different, they've got a lot of great food to offer here.

Great tunes (although we were convinced they were turning up the speaker next to us in order to drown out the scouser in our group) and a good atmosphere, with some quality retro pinball machines to boot. Service is always friendly and on Fridays they have usually some comp pizzas being handed out. They also do an offer for offices to get cheap drinks on a Friday night so defiantly a good spot if it's a work do. They also have a private hire room in the back for events

If you're a student then the drinks aren't hugely cheap but the pool is good and free if you're at the university of Manchester! Good for pool but not much else, not sure about food. Staff are OK and nice. Quite a good atmosphere, central location, if you wanna play some pool then this is the place to go if you can't travel far from the centre but make sure that you arrive early on busy nights to get a table.

Black Dog, is my favourite place to end a night out, I am a fan of pool so it works well and it has a good atmosphere with friendly staff. It opens until 4am on a weekend so it is a good place to end a night. I can also highly recommend the pizza they serve, although I have never had one sober.

From reading other reviews, it sounds as though this place operates essentially as two different venues. The negative reviews seem to be from the night club crowd. I've only ever been during the daytime and seen it as a regular Northern Quarter bar for a good lunch and a relaxing afternoon. I really like it. The dark decor is a welcome change from some of the garish decor that can be found in other places. What I've had of the food has been good. I particularly enjoyed the blend of regular and sweet potato fries. I've never tried the pizzas (maybe next visit) but the burgers with the various options are amazing - stilton helps anything it touches. I'm not a great eater of red meat so when I have it I like it to be good quality, and this is definitely good beef. My last visit was about two weeks ago. They were clearly short-staffed and there was a bit of a delay with taking our order but we were never forgotten about. The bar staff, who were clearly rushed, were aware of us and constantly apologised and assured us we would be dealt with soon, which we were. In fact, if they hadn't been so attentive, we would probably not have realised that there was a delay at all, as it really wasn't that long. Besides, we were busy being entertained by the most adorable creature trotting around the bar. There was an actual little black dog, who seemed loved by everyone. He just sat and watched us for a while, being cute and not making a nuisance of himself, before moving along to the next table and doing the same thing. The staff even checked with us that we weren't uncomfortable with him being there, which I wasn't (and I say that as a cat person). The only let-down is the poor range of ciders available. Somersby was the only one on tap. I find it too sickly sweet, and when asked I was told that the only bottled ones available were Rekorderlig, which are actually worse. A wider range of good ciders and it would be top marks for the Black Dog Ballroom. I like this place and I'm looking forward to my next visit.

Called in late on a Sunday afternoon, and it was alright. Even though the bar was pretty quiet it just felt like it was more of a 'party pub'. Plastic glasses, inside, on a Sunday afternoon...? The thing that really improved the visit was Elika (?) behind the bar, she was bloody good and had a giggle as we sat at the bar. If we had sat anywhere else it would of been just the one drink and off.

Friday nights' JUICY event is a treat for those into hip hop and RnB. I don't recall the price of the drinks but it starts at 11pm and entry is free entry. The main area boasts a large bar, seating areas and large bathrooms. The dance floor area is at the back on the right and there's an additional small bar and toilets next to the dance floor.

I am not the biggest fan if I am being honest. Pool at £5 an hour is god value for money but the drinks are quite expensive which compensates for the cheap pool. The music is pretty good and the club is open till the wee hours of the morning which is good when you don't want to go club hopping. Black Dog Ballroom is a safe bet if you aren't sure of where you want to go as you are guaranteed a good night albeit a little on the expensive side.

Bar staff/waiting on staff friendly and professional (hense stars) but ive got to be honest the chefs are either stoned or just completely useless. Wouldn't usually write review but it's twice now that ive had to wait for over half an hour for a sandwich to come out in a virtually empty restaurant (Alongside messing the order up on two seperate occassions.) I literally can knock up more complex meals with my eyes shut in half the time. Have to wonder why its always dead umongst competitors for food!

A really good place if you are with a mixed group of friends looking to have a great time until the very early hours. However if you're in a group of lads you'll probably be better of trying elsewhere as the door staff very rarely let groups in. Check out the pizza's when there and also look out for Bruce, the black dog himself, wandering around.

This place is alright if you're after a drink and a game of pool. The "secret room" area is a nice touch, there's also a decent selection of cocktails and drinks available. The place can get quite busy though, especially later on in the evening.

We often have work night outs at Black Dog NWS and it has everything we need. We go to black dog because the food is just want you want on a night out- pizzas and burgers and such like, they have offers on the beers, and they also have pool and Karaoke. The karaoke booth is brilliant and is open til really late when the power ballads come out.

Thanks to James winning a Twitter competition for a meal for 2 and cocktails at Black Dog Ballroom NQ, we headed down to the Northern Quarter yesterday evening for a Sunday date night. It had been a while since we’d both been to the NYC inspired venue and as we entered the stylish but warm bar space, we wondered why it had been so long, especially since it’s just down the road from our Manchester flat! We were welcomed by the friendly bar staff, who had reserved a booth just for us and swiftly served us our first cocktails of the night – a classic Mojito for James while I went for a Passionfruit Tequila twist on the mint-based alcoholic beverage. Both were ridiculously tasty and refreshing, with just the right balance of sweetness and sharpness; you could taste the quality of the spirits used, which are stated on the Drinks menu. Round two: while I opted for perhaps one of the best cocktails I’ve tasted, a simple but impressive Fluffy Appletini, James, as recommended by the lovely Rob, chose the Long Island Iced Tea, which again was dangerously tasty. With the likes of Foals, Chris Malinchak and Metronomy on the playlist, this set the perfect tone for a chilled-out but fun occasion; there were groups of girls laughing away over drinks, lads tucking into food and other couples enjoying an evening out together. Black Dog NQ really is the sort of place you can come at any time of the day with friends or your other half. My Chilli Marinated Steak Salad with honey and mustard dressing was divine, offering a generous amount of salad and rocket leaves for added pepperiness, together with cucumber, red onion and perfectly cooked chunks of spicy steak. Simple but delicious! James went for the more manly choice of The Northern Quarter Pounder – 100% local Cheshire beef burger with a Jack Daniels glaze, served in a toasted brioche bun with salad, Black Dog relish and a side of fries. Again, another winner made from fresh, good quality ingredients, an upmarket twist on your standard pub/bar food. We couldn’t leave Black Dog without playing a few rounds of pool so for the next hour, James and I fought it out and enjoyed some healthy competition potting balls, so to speak. With four tables available and £5 an hour, it’s the ideal place for settling scores with friends or work colleagues on a lunchtime, after work or well into the night. Sadly for me, while I’m not terrible at the game, James well and truly beat me but hey ho, it rounded off a fun night of food, cocktails, great music and friendly service.
