Reviews of Cane & Grain
G. C.
Delicious food. I had the Dr Pepper wings and beef fries - good job I was hungry! They were playing indie rock and had a good selection of drinks.
J. W.
Lovely cocktails at cane and grain, we stayed for a couple each! Zombie, parrot fashion, coco club and Rye-bina were all great. The Zombie being the pick of the bunch!
S. B.
This is a very lively bar on a Friday evening with a great atmosphere. Outdoor seating is good for the summer and a slightly more relaxing vibe than being inside. It’s a friendly crowd though, including the staff, and with a brilliant range of drinks and food it’s a good spot to spend a few hours. The decor is unique and interesting making it a memorable spot for a night out.
T. “. G.
Arguably the best and most iconic bar in Manchester. Music fantastic, drinks range great and excellent location in the heart of the Northern Quarter. This is a bar with a brilliant reputation amongst bartenders and one that my friends and I always visit when we make a trip from over the Pennines. Will be back, probably the next time I'm in Manchester
K. B.
I stopped by Cane and Grain with a colleague while in Manchester. We turned up on a Saturday without a reservation and had to queue outside for 5 minutes for a seat inside (would have been 25 for outside seating). Very impressed that we were able to be seated so quickly. The staff were awesome and helpful, suggesting some drinks and eats. Ordering food is done by scanning a QR code on the table where you can choose your drinks, food and pay. Our food arrived promptly and everything was great, I highly recommend the truffle poutine!!
F. Z.
I came when it was sunny so outdoor seating was perfect. I didn’t have a booking either and waiting time wasn’t long maybe 10-15 minutes. It was easy to order and food came in about 15/20 minutes which was great. I ordered the vegan burger and wow, one of the best non meat burgers I’ve probably ever had!
D. C.
The night we came they had 50% off food. Think our total bill came to around £10 a head when we all had a main and a pint.
My bacon cheeseburger was tasty.
The service was very friendly and attentive and the venue was very nice to enjoy time with friends.
S. S.
Lovely little bar and restaurant situated on Northern Quarter in Manchester. A friend and I went there for drinks and sat outside and it was utterly glorious with the sunshine! Easy to order at the bar or via the QR code on the tables.
B. C.
I like it there! Staff are lovely and the atmosphere is great.
L. T.
Decent beer selection, fun interior, but no real concern for repeat custom - inner city location means that staff aren't as friendly as at "a local". Still one of the more interesting city centre drink locations.
A. '.
Second visit to Manchester this year and made sure to stop here for food again. It didn't disappoint! Just as good and last time. Try the ribs!
E. H.
Great drinks and great food. Unisex toilets with individual cubicles. Outdoor seating available. Shame its quite small.
T. F.
One of the better bars in Manchester, really. Bit pricy but so are most places in NQ. Nice crowd, friendly staff, tasty beers. Good music on a weekend, too.
L. O.
The bar staff are lovely and are able to make a whole drink out of just flavours you mention. The cherry mocktail they made was amazing.
O. H.
Excellent food, the staff were very accommodating with fast service. Good pricing for the area, will definitely be returning.
J. R.
Awesome place. Great for beer and cocktails. Take a trip through the "secret" door to Science and Industry for some reimagined cocktails.
The BBQ and A that we attended was excellent with knowledgeable staff showing how they prepare the meat that they sell in the bar. The end result is to die for.
Excellent bourbon selection. Excellent beet selection.
W. N.
Good food at a great price. Gourmet style, contemporary pub food. Great burgers! Good selection of local beers. Nice atmosphere. Really good spot when the weather is good enough to sit out so you can also get your spot on sun. Highly recommend coming here. They won't disappoint.
Have since gone back and will keep going back. Great food, drink and staff.
D. H.
Its been a few months since I was last here, and it's always been good. But this time it absolutely knocked it out of the park.
Best fries I've ever had.
Best wings I've ever had.
And the burger was pretty damn good too, even if you can get better in Manchester. Also really fast and great service despite being rammed, incredibly impressed.
J.
Delicious food great atmosphere... To be honest canes Burger has been the best burger I've had in the UK! Highly recommend plus they have open mic upstairs and limited outdoor seating.
L. M.
Laid back amercan style joint with great food. Very nice hipster style place in northern quarter. There are tons of these places now in that area but this one is definitely recommended.
C.
Well what can I say... great experience well thought out themed levels, 1st floor 'pub' style for pre drinks, through the 'secret' door to the restaurant, Victorian apothecary themed including fab mixology menu for cocktails. Food was amazing and staff were fab. Then on up to the tiki cocktail bar, look out for the ""zombie"" wow!
M. S.
10 out of 10 on everything. Staff were super friendly the food was heavenly. I would drive miles just to come and eat here. Don’t think twice , just walk in! You will not be disappointed!
S. H.
Lovely staff, fab food and drinks, love the outdoor seating. This is the Vegan burger £10 without chips. Was lovely but steep prices
H. B. (.
We went to the speak easy above Cane & Grain - still a part of it but comes under the moniker Science & Industry. It's decked out like an old American speakeasy and has a really classic, opulent vibe. Atmospherically low lit with lots of brown leather booths and old world style decor. The drinks menu is amazing with too many delicious sounding cocktails to choose from. We tried to try as many as we could and enjoyed them all. They're served looking so good and taste equally so. Will definitely be back! Didn't try the food but boy could we smell it and that alone assured us it was delicious!
P. W.
Awesome place, great beers and amazing food. Also has an amazing cocktail/bourbon bar upstairs 🥰🥰
P. A.
Fantastic relaxed atmosphere. Music choice in the bar was top notch. Was seated on the ground floor. Upstairs was having an open mic night. Food was lovely. The waitress. Veronica I think she said her name was, couldn't be more helpful. Definitely recommend a visit.
A. H.
Great pub, great atmosphere and great friendly helpful staff. Plenty of beers to choose from. Didn’t stay for good today but we have on other occasions which we totally enjoyed. Say upstairs in where the rooms nicely lit, with leather seats. Looks very elegant. Definitely a place to pop into when your passing.
J. B.
Came in as a group of 6 for some light food and a drink, place was cool with a nice atmosphere and the server in the beanie was class.
Very nice food and drink, highly recommend :)
B.
Slightly unclear when you book that you're booking for a specific floor, but once we'd sorted that and got sat down the cocktails were great and although not cheap, about the going rate for in Manchester now.
P. 8.
Came in with friends was Served by Chris, excellent, friendly welome and service. As a chef myself will tell you the Food was amazing will definitely be back soon
C. B.
Great atmosphere and really fun has three levels, ground floor is a relaxed bar, level two is a restaurant with great food, third floor is the party bar playing R&B and party anthems
D. W.
Nice bar, great range of beers and some interesting cocktails (the Zombie was really good if you like rum).
A. S.
Great atmosphere and music and great selection of rums..though the fries that came with our food were drenched in salt
S. K.
Great food. Homemade slaw 👌👌👌 and the cane & grain draught was spot on. Those 2 reasons alone, worth a visit!
M. R.
Friendly staff. Decent drinks. Food looked okay (that others were eating). Typical sort of Northern Quarter place.
G. L.
Very happy with the half a rack of ribs. If you happen to be in the area for lunch, they have a £5 lunch deal (Feb 2018) which is marvellous value. Chips are crunchy and a winner. Will be back for the pork belly rib.
P. B.
You can’t walk past Cane & Grain without feeling intrigued as to what’s occurring inside.
A must visit bar in the NQ in my opinion.
Endless selection of beers, wines etc....comfy seats and some of the best music I’ve heard in Manchester.
‘Secret’ door in the corner to access the Science and Industry cocktail bar on the first floor 🙊
L. S.
Good bar, decent selection of beers including some nice IPA's. We had buffalo chicken wings and fries, both were excellent and very tasty. There's a good few outdoor tables although they could be more comfortable. Service was good and even the bouncers were polite, which is refreshing because bouncers are usually unfriendly at best.
A. S.
This is a must go place in Northern Quarter, it has great food and a range of quality cocktails!
A. D.
This was a trendy place to grab a bite and pint. Pricing was good and the food was pretty tasty. I took a chance on a sandwich I wouldn't normally and I wasn't disappointed, but left wondering if there was something a bit better on the menu.
C.
Superb bar. Always seems busy with good food and beer.
T. W.
Good vibe and nice drinks. Poutine fries were great
O.
Ok, we felt a little old to be in here but rhe beers are good and the vibe is good. What mire do tou want?
A. C.
Great late night bar with two rooms. Recommend the lounge upstairs and the zombie cocktails they serve.
A. L.
This place is for carnivores and craft beer loved.
Very tasty food with slow cooked ribs, beef and of course pulled pork. Good service, atmosphere and music.
To the chefs: The meat needs more sauce and was on the dry side. If the meat was more succulent that would be perfect.
C. M.
Came and grain was a lot experience. Had some lovely food with some great cocktails and drink selections. The atmosphere was great too seemed like a popular venue and the staff provided top notch service. Will be back when I visit Manchester!
L. B.
Very busy on the first weekend since being able to sit inside. Good service and staff looked after us.
Inside and outside seating available. Ordered via the app and table service was on offer.
Hoped to get up to Science & Industry, their secret speakeasy style cocktail bar, but it was full so had to settle for just Cane & Grain.
A. d.
Daniel bartender compete legend best service we’ve had at our stay. Hero would recommend this place for his service alone. Peace
M. R.
Really good atmosphere! The security late on at night were nice and polite compared to other places.
The cocktails are so good! Little bit price from 8 quid onwards. But then again it's manchester going to pay the higher rates from drinks. Most of the cocktails have rum in them. So if your a rum lover you'll love the drinks. There are 2 cocktails that have gin in them. Them two taste lush!
E. S.
Highly recommended place, affordable prices, quality food, lovely place, friendly staff. Always exceeding expectations.
C. C.
Nice bar good service, a bit on the expensive side, but the drinks are genuine
G. E.
OMG. Food was amazing. The ribs with home made BBQ sauce is to die for. Very reasonably priced too. Worth the visit. 👌
K. M.
Great drinks and really tasty food. Not expensive for either. Great atmosphere, really good music, friendly people
C. M.
The corndogs are amazing!
A. J.
Staff were friendly and helped us choose drinks from the menu. The gluten free pilsner was great, and thouroughly recommend Manchester Union lager. Food came quickly and was delicious. Not cheap as it was £60 for the two of us, but definitely worth the money.
D. R.
Been there on the Brooklyn brewery event, in the science and industry floor, had a great time in beer tasting, we had a tasty portions of food coming along with every beer we had, it was probably the best tasting I've ever been in, later on we been invited to join to play some games downstairs and to win some prices
B. G.
Excellent, authentic American BBQ.
Ribs were seriously good - but the small plates weren't very nice.
이.
A good price for lunch and services.
It has a quite vintage feeling :)
L. J.
Loved it. Great music, great service. Proper good vibes in there 👌
N. S.
Great bar, good selection of beers including hipstery ipas. Lots of good American style food items on the menu all at a decent price. Also do a mean zombie cocktail 🤌
J. G.
Dazzling staff, fab food and beverages, love the outside seating. This is the Vegan burger £10 without chips. Was beautiful however steep costs
A. R.
We were in the 'secret' bar on the first floor. I'm told that there's a more secret bar on the second floor, but that eluded us... It wasn't too crowded, and it was quiet enough to talk without having to shout (I'm getting old). I liked it, and would go again, although I don't feel as if it will become a regular haunt.
C. H.
"Zombie" cocktails, very tasty. Pleasant experience and nice staff.
J. B.
Had some nice beers and cocktails. Lively but not too busy. Nice vibe.
J. H.
Love it here. Stout is A1 had food and it was spot on. A must visit
T. L.
Honestly amazing place, vibes great, beer great, unfortunately the security are incredibly hostile, got flashed in my eyes for standing in a corridor, luckily not epileptic but seriously incredibly hostile not allowing people to go back after getting a stamp to leave is weird, security are not friendly at all! Make sure to go before 1am, one of the bartenders with a beard though absolute legend, such a sound dude!
R. E.
Food is fantastic. Big portions and great value. Couldn't ask for more. Mac an cheese is to die for.
M. H.
Had the best time at this Bar!
The zombie cocktail is a must try!
J. S.
Really friendly bar staff, gave us loads of local information and tips. Place looks very cool and is extremely well run.
A. R. (.
Cute little bar in NQ, also got a hidden upstairs
A. E.
Some of the best ribs I've ever had. Definitely the best in Manchester. Also has a good selection of beer.
B. H.
Really nice relaxed atmosphere food is good
R. J.
Really great atmosphere with a wide range of drinks (both alcoholic and non). The bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly. We went mid week so it was quieter as it seems like it could be quite popular. The food menu looks good and they have different offers on. Overall, worth a visit when you are in the area and want to grab a drink or a bite to eat with friends!
P. B.
Drinks = phenomenal. Food = to die for. Service = Sublime.
I. H.
Great atmosphere, fantastic food, friendly staff and some great beers. Not as expensive as many round that area.
N. E.
Really cute and trendy spot with good southern food choices and cocktails. As a Southerner myself, the food was pretty good, despite not being necessarily “authentic” American Southern cuisine. I ordered several small/starter plates together because I wanted to try several things. Definitely recommend the Mac n cheese and collard greens.
C. A.
The wings here came in clutch when I was smashed on a first date. 400/10.
D. H.
Great atmosphere, food was superb, all freshly prepared! Service was great! Will definitely return!
M. B. A.
It was OK. Great staff and decor. But considering they specialize in ribs. They were over cooked.
L. P.
Great bar nice decorated GOOD LIVE MUSIC
D. W.
Fantastic Service with good food and fantastic cocktails. I had the brisket sub and sweet potato fries loaded with cheese. The staff were very helpful when checking regarding allergies for me. Good music and great atmosphere. Americana skater and dive vibes. Came with a group of 4, managed to be seated straight away on a Sunday whilst out with the girls. Food came quickly, team were very polite! 5*
k. b.
Great beer collection. Tasty ribs. Love the sign on the wall of "smoke ribs not weed"
G. Y.
Amazing! So tasty and would certainly come back again! 😍
J. D.
Updated review 2019:. The quality of food at this venue has disappointingly hit rock bottom. I really hope they can improve things.
Older review 2018: Lovely waiting staff, amazing ribs and pretty good chicken wings on the 1st floor.
I do really like the ambience and food. They could do with a few more stronger craft beers but hey they had white wine which was ok.
M. I.
Amazing! I've had a few good times but my last was the best at the end of a first date, the bar staff are great very quick and attentive. Highly recommend 👍
C. S.
I really liked this place. Downstairs was a very trendy bar serving a good selection of beer. It was busy and we wanted to eat so we ended up upstairs in a very cool speak easy type cocktail bar. We had burgers which were really tasty and a good bottle of wine. We didn't have cocktails but the ones being drunk on the nearby tables looked very good indeed!
A. R.
I was visiting a friend in Manchester and she highly recommended to come to this place. They have some interesting drinks in here. I was about to have a sugar coma but I enjoyed them. The ambiance is good, not quite but not too loud so you can have a niche chat with friends. The cheese+ truffle fries are soooo delicious!
N. S.
American esque feeling to the place, friendly staff and fast service. Popular place so prepare for crowds but everything is moderately priced and tastes good.
D. C.
Sat out in the new outdoor seating space and started looking on their online order system for what we wanted only to find out the menu on their website doesn't reflect what is actually available as they've not updated the website for ages. We wanted ribs and their trays they used to do but you can now only get a single (or 3) beef ribs or some wings or burgers.
Host was helpful in explaining situation and safety measures but food just didn't live up to expectation.
My biggest gripe is the fact that people are allowed to smoke in the outdoor seating section where others are eating which is just gross. Also the host was sparking up a cigarette at the host stand! Not sure if he went and washed his hands afterwards either.
Personally I'd go to Smokehouse or Red's if you want decent BBQ food.
D. H.
Oh my bloody good God, me and my daughter's had a fantastic meal hear, I would highly recommend staff were amazing, friendly and helpful🥂
R. B.
Bouncer was very strange, wouldn't let us in despite being front of the queue and about 30 people leaving. Bar upstairs was good vibes though.
J. H.
Hate the shared bathrooms, love the craft beer, could do with a good clean in some areas!!!
Don’t miss out on the chill room downstairs. Cocktails are good here too, usually has a good armosphere - pretty solid choice on a night out.
C. H.
Good food&drink. Not the quietest of places but great atmosphere.
S. D.
Good range of beers and delicious food with friendly service. Lunchtime deal of ribs or burger with either fries or side salad for £6 was tasty, filling and great value. I would recommend the signature sauce on the ribs; full of flavour, but not too hot.
S. S.
Amazing atmosphere and the burgers are delicious. Great vibe and decor of the place too. Has many vegan options and is suitable for anyone :)
I. W.
Really buzzing on Friday night. Great service . Worth it just to see the zombie being made by the bar staff
B. T. (.
Nice cocktails, some good beers (mostly canned). BBQ chicken wings were nice, although not exceptional. There was live music at the bar upstairs, a rotating performance of different musicians, I've enjoyed it quite a lot.
A. M.
Loved this place. Lots of fun.
D. F.
Great spot, to Really good atmosphere and serves a mean Old Fashioned made the right way!
A. J.
Who doesnt love a cane & grain night!
Always have the best time !
Always lose a shoe too...Great Times!
Foods decent too!
J. D.
Amazing place, food is top class and very well priced. If you like your Ales then no better place, huge selection of Draft, Bottle and Cans. Weekley Specials on Ales and Monthly Brewer Special too. Interior is amazing with loads of time, effort and thought gone into it. Very friendly staff to boot.
A. S.
Food is top quality. Really tasty fries and pulled chicken burger. Great price lunch menu and nothing was skimped on. Lovely host too. Cool little quirky bar!
O. W.
Great BBQ food and atmosphere. Young trendy crowd, if you like that sort of thing. Great selection of drinks, classic blues and rock style music. Worth ot, not on the cheap side, bit to be expected in the Northern Quarter
A. F.
Visited during their January 50% off food promotion. Typical trendy vibe found throughout the NQ with decent beer selection. I liked their house pilsner far more than I expected to. As for the food, both myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - full ribs and a large portion of chips. Chips look sorry for themselves but they are very tasty indeed, don't be fooled. Ribs are tasty and cooked well. We also indulged with chicken wings and burnt ends as extras. So much food and it couldn't be finished so we took advantage of their doggy bag service. Staff were very friendly and available quickly. Lovely surprise for a Sunday afternoon
n.
Southern style U.S "dude food" (a silly naming trend as my wife loves it more than me). Perfectly cooked baby back ribs, not sloppy fall off the bone, but tender tear off with your teeth leaving the bone clean (as they should be). St Louis ribs, juicy burgers with crispy fresh veg, crunchy seasoned fries, creamy mac n cheese, Jacobs ladder, perfect sauces, collard greens, and so much more I'll be back to try. Service is friendly, so are the prices. Oh and the cold keg beer is magic. Highly recommended.
F. H. (.
Great food and I think it's pretty reasonably priced. I'm a big fan of the American style bbq restaurants and this is up there with the best. The me looks small but it's almost impossible to pick what to eat, you just want to try everything. I've tried about a third of the menu and it's all good so far. If you like outrageous American style food then you won't be disappointed.
S. A.
Very nice for some drinks.
A. P.
Reserved a table for my sons 18th Birthday in Science and Industry as he is a ribs fan. Food was really good ... but what was really nice was that we were not rushed throughout our meal, even though it was a Friday night. We were made to feel really welcome and even though one of my sons was running really late to join us the server helped us work around this an made it into a really good night for my son whose birthday it was
S.
My favourite place in Manchester. Love the place and love a good pint of zombie cocktail. Staff are great too! But prefer upstairs more than downstairs.
I also want playboy mags all over my ceiling like in the men's toilet but I'm not allowed :(
V. C.
Great alternative pub/bar with a drink for everyone from beers to cocktails. The food looked with good especially if you like your meat. Good atmosphere, decoration on the wall with music for the alternative taste.
J. C.
Great food, lovely staff, nice surroundings, we visit usually every time we come to Manchester... The only downside is the price of the beer on draught it's a bit steep. It is the northern quarter though so prices are inflated and you don't need to drink.
R. R.
Shaun of the dead was a really nice cocktail. Great procedures in place for CV19 and social distancing but still had a great atmosphere. Liked being able to order on the app but was sad I couldn't get a baby guiness shot lol
K. B.
Quite a very busy pub mainly used by the young professionals in Manchester.
It has 2 bars, the ground floor and then another bar on the top floor, both about the same size.
It was quite noisy as they play background music so it can be difficult to have a conversation but it does have a great atmosphere.
S. D.
First of all I have to mention the transformation this place has undergone. A total transformation of the space and feel from the Thomas St Restaurant, the previous occupier, the 3 floors all have a unique style and feel very much like different venues, the attention to detail that has gone into each floor is amazing, if you like design check out some of the signs, they are a work of art. Each with it's own unique features but all welcoming and cosy, the Tap Room was hammered even on a Thursday but the others were quite quiet.
When we arrived we were whisked to the First Floor Bar which looks and feels like something out of 1930's New York, the detailing in the decor and menu's is phenomenal.
The service was top class and our waitress gave us great recommendations on the food and drinks.
To the important stuff, the food, we opted for the Rib Roll and a selection of sides. The 11" roll is a delicacy, the coleslaw is a perfect accompaniment to the perfectly cooked rib meat. Though the stand out for us was the sides, the Jalapenos in Smoking Jackets & Smoke Pit Beans with Burnt Ends were probably the best sides I've ever had in Manchester
I'd have no hesitation ordering a table full of them whilst sampling some of the awesome cocktails.
My only minor negative is that the drink menu differs depending which floor you are on, I can understand that with signature cocktails but for things like draft beer it's a bit of a pain if you have to order on different levels if members of group want different. Luckily for us our waitress went downstairs to get us the draft beers though not sure that would happen if it was busier.
Will definitely be returning.
E. M.
Most of the food was over cooked. Some portions were a joke. Burgers were really small. 3 skinny onion rings does not constitute a portion. Drinks were expensive but on par with the area. Staff were attentive but clearly in a rush to get us out. Wouldn't eat there again.
K. B.
Food was great! Small menu but super super tasty, 100% recommended their Zombies!🥰
S. H.
Excellent ribs and chicken, fast and professional service and a wide selection of beers. Located close to Victoria Station in a hip neighbourhood of with plenty of bars and other eateries. Fair prices and good sized portions.
J. H.
Skate themed bar - the tap room had great bartenders, whether it's a Saturday night or a Tuesday afternoon they are always on form. Great selection of beers on draught and in bottles, if you like Kona you will like it here! The food is great and comes really quick.
Not been into the bar upstairs yet but I will do very soon, will be coming back and recommending to friends
L. M.
A fantastic selection of worldwide beers - done very strong. I would suggest asking for the bar person to recommend one based on your requirements.
During the day they have a small bar menu that offers outstanding value - all options just £5.
There isn't a huge amount of time during lunchtime so do arrive early.
J. Q.
Great food consistently over the the years
I. B.
Didn't eat, but came and propped up the bar for a few drinks (pints of very decent San Miguel). Big fan of the decor, the graffiti bar top and especially the tiled wall.
Food smelt really good when it was brought out and the bar staff were friendly enough.
L. T.
Loved the place. I enjoy the tiki lounge. The place does nice cocktails. The bar staff are friendly and one has great sass!
Worth a visit. I would suggest trying a Frankenstein. They cost more but the amount is worth it and it lasted longer than I expected
J. C. S.
A good bar with a nice interior design, good range of drinks and plenty of seating. The barman had amazing cocktail making skills, spinning the glass, it was outrageous. There's a cool atmosphere there too, so enjoy yourself. It's well located too, close to Piccadilly Gardens station and the trendy Northern Quarter.
K. A.
Quite nice burger and chips for £6. Glass wine listed as large is a medium at nearly a fiver. The waiter was great, really polite and attentive and honest
T. n. g.
Very nice bar with a tikki club upstairs, amazing to dance
C. D.
A nice, modern bar with well made drinks
A. G.
First night out is a long time. Absoulutly brilliant.
T. J.
Great vibe, tasty food and the service was quick. What more do you want?
J.
Forever one of my favourites. Very good social distancing measures in place. Friendly staff and great choice of drinks and food for everyone. Thanks all, back soon!
a. t.
Lovely staff! Yummy vegan burger and fries portion size looked a little meager but actually was just enough
J. C.
Always friendly staff here. Really nice pub in a great area in the middle of NQ.
Easy paying system with covid atm.
Well worth a visit!
J. B.
Really tasty burger and lovely terrace. Nice and quiet on a week day.
S. H.
Nice little pub resturaunt. We had a stag party here and ate a lot of food. We have the catering done like a buffet style and there was so much meat that was cooked for us. I can not fault the staff.. I ate so much that I couldn't get drunk all night.

I used to go here when it was Thomas Street and Cane and Grain is totally different! It's very deep south themed with their sticky and dry rubbed ribs and for anybody wanting to try something a little different you should go for the Ting flavoured sauce. The waitress recommended it to me and my friend - it sounds odd but tasted incredible.
They also have a speakeasy themed bar which we didn't get time to look at but I'll definitely visit in the next few weeks. This bar might just be my new favourite watering hole.
M. 9.
Nice food but small menu. Nice interior. Shots are a little over priced.
J. C. C.
Another generic hipster/American bar, staff do not particularly appear interested in creating a vibe. We were in a group of 15 so we had fun, but it would help that staff try not to burn customers went setting cocktails on fire.
H. B.
Good bar, fantastic service but the food didn’t live up to our expectations.
I’ve regularly gone here for a few nice pints for a great atmosphere, good music and the extreme sport decor.
Tried eating here for the first time and the service was fantastic! The waitress found us a table quickly so through the bookcase we went upstairs and back in time to a smart vintage restaurant selling gastro cocktails and American food.
Firstly top marks for the waitress bringing water immediately to the table along with a cocktail menu. The house special old fashion was pleasant unlike the rum, ginger beer and milk collision I ordered for the mrs.
Are starters arrived the ribs were a winner, pretty average chicken wings and not quite persuaded by the prawn ball things.
Burger time! And what a disappointment. I went for the cane and grain burger witch was so big I had to eat it with my knife and fork witch always looses points in my books. The cheesy chips were made with the weirdest cheese it was like mash potato on top of the chips.
Overall if it wasn’t down to the custmer service this places would have less than 3 starts and that’s not like me!
J.
Forever one of my favourites. Very good social distancing measures in place. Friendly staff and great choice of drinks and food for everyone. Thanks all, back soon!
k.
Wanting food I found this place. Good atmosohere, pleasant staff (3*). Was disappointed with the food.
A.
Dermot O’Neill is a fan favourite. Top lad, quick service and dab banter. Big love xxx
E. M.
Interesting bar that's for sure! It has a good atmosphere and a decent selection of drinks. I've not tried the food, but apparently it's pretty good.
J. J.
Highly recommend the chicken wings. Great beer selection and cocktails.
M. G.
Gets crazy busy at the weekend, but that's because it's doing something right. Good beer, cocktails, and food. The soundtrack is loud and lively (you're as likely to hear skate punk as you are 70s funk). Worth a visit for sure
W. G.
This place is on point and so is their music choice it is impeccable👍😁! Also affordable!
c. b.
Great atmosphere and music. It gets very busy on the weekend, with some people reserving tables! Selection of drinks is really good, and although I've not eaten there yet, the food looks amazing.
J. C.
Lively and sunny!
D. N.
Great service, friendly and warm.
D. H.
Cane and Grain. A brilliant bar within Manchester scenic northern quarter. It has 3 floors with different bars and a wide range of drinks on tap. Although aesthetically very nice on the inside and out. The bar itself is a little pricey due to the area of Manchester it resides in. Certainly worth a visit.
M. W.
love this place, f**** amazing ribs and really good drinks selection. would recommend remembering which ribs you order then trying different ones next time. oh and make room for the sides as you have to try most of them at some point.
C. G.
Great atmosphere inside and our.
Good strong cocktails x
M.
Small but cosy place, that typical hipster pretentious vibe with 5 pound beers and a hedonistic crowd. Think you pay for the venue - I wouldn't pay for the atmosphere though. Its saving grace is it's secret bar and of course they have one - it fits into their narrative!
H. J.
The menu revolves around pork so it's limited for people who want a bit of variety. Table service especially for good is dreadfully slow. 35 minutes for our starter and another 15 minutes for our mains which were a burger and salad! With that said it was a Saturday night on payday weekend. The food and ambience are well above average so it's worth giving it a try on another day and see for yourself.
S. W.
Guess I've been spoilt in other "bbq" type places. Was nothing special. The pit beans were really runny - mostly tomato, and actually barely any beans!
The burgers were quite small too. And for £9 with no sides? Very expensive.
It wasn't offensive and was edible, but given the competition in Manchester I wouldn't go back.
Beer selection was good and the service was pleasant.
J. F.
As the name suggests all drinks are good.
a. t.
Lovely staff! Yummy vegan burger and fries portion size looked a little meager but actually was just enough
D. B.
Great tasty food ,great drinks friendly place
C. L.
Went here the other day for some drinks with friends and the cocktails are truly amazing! watching the drinks get prepared alone is worth coming for. The bartenders like to make a show out of it. I had a great time there!
P. P.
Good selection of beers, ciders, spirits etc. Plenty of space on the ground floor and entrances on both sides of the building, does get very busy on evenings. 3rd floor tiki bar is a lot of fun with exotic cocktails and bigger ones for sharing, some that come on fire. 2nd floor bar is the swankiest with really good cocktail selection, seating and more of relaxed atmosphere. They also serve food here which is really nice, lots of smaller bites and some burgers etc. Get stuck in!
J. W.
Always love the food here, usually threatens to defeat me...no different with the full rack of beef short ribs, with the Memphis mop (serious intense kick) to vary flavours.
Laidback and easygoing, not been to the bar upstairs yet, told it's good.
C. P.
The lunch menu here is really good with great fries and the ribs are especially good.
Great selection of beers like big wave and camden.
The service can be a bit hit and miss.
M. F.
Been here a few times now as it was recommended to me. Always great food, decently priced and they have my favourite beer on tap. Excellent.
M. G.
Had the £40 jobby(Boneyard feast) with a few cocktails. Always a gamble these types of places- usually overcooked or sub par. This was excellent in a great atmosphere. Had to take a 'chien' bag home - big tasty portions. Would go back & recommend.
J. C.
Always friendly staff here. Really nice pub in a great area in the middle of NQ.
Easy paying system with covid atm.
Well worth a visit!
j. c.
Food amazing, beer choice great with fantastic cocktails as well. Staff friendly and polite. Atmosphere the best with awesome surroundings.
J. B.
Amazing ribs. Both the beef and pork were excellent. Quite small though and the restaurant has a tendency to fill up quickly, so build this into your plans if you're thinking of making a visit.
G.
Great drinks... Brilliant staff
T. n. g.
Very nice bar with a tikki club upstairs, amazing to dance
C. P.
The portions are nowhere near as big as they used to be. I assume Brexit is the reason for this, but regardless if you went here a year or so ago versus now you'll certainly notice.
The waiting staff at Cain & Grain never seem to be in a hurry to take your order. Numerous times colleagues and I have gone for an hour lunch, sat down, waited 30 minutes or more for our orders to be taken and 20 minutes to recieve said food only to have to throw it down our necks so we can rush back to work.
The food here is nice, but honestly, it's not worth the hassle.
B. M.
Part of the Tiki franchise Cane and Grain keep it simple - If you like Rum cocktails and juicy Ribs then this place is where you want to be as they do both very well. I went for the beef ribs with a bourbon sauce which nearly finished me, they were huge and covered in sticky sweet sauce washed down with a well crafted Dark and Stormy. The only other thing on the menu were chicken wings - which they had run out of when we were there but would not have been able to stand up to the ribs in any case.
A. H.
It's ok but I wouldn't go for food after 7 as it's busy. Not to be ageist as well but alot of young people who are drunk however no problems but just something to think about if you want a family meal.
E. T.
I simply enjoy their dishes. I always get good service here. The place is well kept and the staff members are always welcoming. Would recommend to others.
J. S.
I went to this place when it was formerly Thomas St restaurant - I mention this only because Cane & Graine have transformed the space. Although it is fairly dark and busy (similar decor to Hula bar around the corner - you will also notice the distinct smell of Zombies!), it is a comfortable space. Basically, very different to former white airy space.
We sat on the top floor in a big group for a friends birthday - the food was nice, I had the crispy beef salad, which was amazing (radish, bean sprouts, corriander), my only criticism was that there wasn't more of it. I did also sample some of my friends food and the ribs were beautifully tender!
Its what you expect for a NQ restaurant, fairly chilled out. But, its nice they've gone for a slightly different theme with the ribs.
Worth a visit.
M. P.
Really cool bar. The menu is epic and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Skate and band stuff everywhere and the music is always top. Highly recommended.
E. R.
My favourite bar in manchester at the moment! Cool atmosphere, quite chilled, good music playing and lots of seating. Fun cocktails and fairly large outdoor seating at the front of the bar
B. P.
Very well organised and accessible spot. They offer large meals and for economical rates. We loved the food a lot and the staff were very affable and informative. Will definitely recommend this spot.
E. F. (. M. D.
Great spot with lovely beers and nice staff. I went there with work after a few drinks at the Christmas Markets. We were all made feel very welcome and had a fantastic night.
A. L.
Had a couple of draught beers and then ordered a chicken burger...wow..most definitely the best chicken burger I have ever eaten..delicious and as it was Wednesday it was just a fiver..
M. R.
Had beef short ribs, truffle fries and collard greens. All excellent. Unusually for me, I was too full to have a dessert. Will definitely eat here again.
S. C.
Decent cocktails (I can easily recommend the bucket of strawberry daiquiri, however it is too easy to drink it too fast and get severe brain freeze)! On a Saturday night they have rockier/heavier music on the ground floor, and more dance like music on the top floor. Due to the bar being relatively small, you will get people bumping into you and the occasional girl (or boy!) grinding you with their posterior - as long as it is all taken in a good manner then fun can be had by all!
R. L.
Nice decor, good selection of drinks. We came for a Christmas dinner and the meat festive board was no more than ok, though there was a lot of it.
X. L.
Good for reasonable service. Get some more non alcaholic beers in and it would be excellent...
E. W.
Lovely little pub/bar. Went to a comedy night there at it was great. Drinks were on the expensive side if you are used to student prices. I think a single vodka lemonade was around £6
B. R.
Good place for dancing. There could be more of a dance floor on the ground floor where the music is better the majority of the time but it's still a good atmosphere and usually busy.
S. S.
I was here with my friend Ryan Davies when suddenly his arse gave in. What followed i can only describe as waterboarding. Guantanamo would be proud. Anyways the drinks are good, it's a nice place. Recommended!
E. D.
Rum, Ribs, Bourbon and Beer Good job the first three of those things happen to be on my ‘very much like’ list.
We were greeted at the door and lead upstairs from the skate bar to the first floor bar which if I’m been honest was a lot more my style. Downstairs felt a bit Avril Levign however upstairs with it's panelled wood floor, glow of yellow light and big leather chesterfield sofas it felt much more grown up.
The cocktail menu was a real delight, so much choice and evidently put together by a team who know their stuff. I decided firstly on ‘the Bloomsbury Tale’ a mix of Tanqueray 10 Gin, lemon, team and ale syrup, and a dash of rhubarb and clove cordial. It was delicious, and tasted like melted gummy sweets. So sweet but with a real syrup flavour to it. Jake who is also a gin lover went for ‘the new Orleans fizz’ a much more creamy cocktail with Gin, cream lemon orange blossom and soda. Despite been mixed with cream the citrus flavours and soda kept it really light.
R. A.
Friendly staff, laid back atmosphere with excellent music!
L. S.
Great selection of cocktails, ales and lagers. Good music. Only downfall is it gets very busy here and you cant always find a seat!
C. M.
Great bar, super kind staff, tasty burger (french fries not recommanded) and a few nice beers. Cool atmosphere !
M. E.
Good night out. Upstairs on a Saturday, good music mix...not sure if there is a DJ as I didn't see any or if it's Spotify LOL but nonetheless music and cocktails, great!
P. R.
Fabulous bar, my new go-to place in Manchester. An excellent range of drinks with great staff who are very knowledgeable about what they sell. Highly recommended.
C. K.
Science and industry upstairs was good. Table a bit small for 3 of us but food was great and quieter/ better atmosphere for eating than downstairs on a Sat night!
J. C.
Great gluten free selection on drinks. Friendly staff and covered for the rainy weather:)
O. L.
A real great atmosphere at this bar, fantastic selection of beers and in particular a great selection of American whiskeys. The staff are really passionate and they know their drinks.
L. S. (.
Loved the upstairs bit, proper G&T glasses. Sturdy.
G&T's downstairs were pleasant too. It was a leaving do for a friend and it was a great place to go after a meal.
N. R.
Fantastic meal. On the spur choice but definitely recommend. Great staff, great choice of beer. Definitely returning!!
A. H.
£6 burger lunch menu was really good value but watch out for the £5+ pint that goes with it. But still good service and atmosphere.
J. G.
Good range of beers and a relaxing atmosphere.
N. R.
Burger was excellent. Had to wait for a table outside but only 10 mins on a weekend.
A. L.
Had a St Louis Ribs there for £15, it was well worth the money
B. P.
Great drinks and atmosphere!
T. J.
Saturday lunchtime in the northern quarter is notoriously difficult to find some somewhere to eat without a long wait. So we tried cain and grain, as it was relatively empty. They have a great selection of beers, menu is limited, but our Memphis style ribs and deep south chicken burgers really were tasty. I would recommend the 'Hot as f*uk' fries, as a side.
The dark ipa was really heavy, but works well with the food.
We took a table outside in the sun, watching the day go by, service was polite and efficient.
K. G.
I've only been here for a quick pint, but I managed to have a peek at all three floors. They've done the place up nicely, with lots of exposed wood, dark decor with splashes of colour and a Tiki bar on the top floor for essential late-night drinking...
A.
Regular haunt for myself, go to location when meeting people for a quick drink or hanging around for a bit longer.
Good selection of beers, nice outdoor area to have a a drink when it's warm
R. N.
Type of place that does what it says well. Nice decor with a good atmosphere. The ribs are particularly nice and I think I'd be tempted to order the same on my next visit.
M. M.
Had the wings they were mint, music and atmosphere of the place was great
A. M.
Great atmosphere for a small place. Drinks selection was amazing. Always pop in for a quick drink when in the area.
P. D.
Cane & Grain is a very fashion place in the northern quarter. It shows a cool decoration of old skateboards, beer crafts and pictures that denote a certain design.
It offers a wide variety of beers, mostly imported, and also serves food. However, the biggest but is the price: it is quite expensive even for the northern quarter. To me, paying 5£ for a beer made difficult to enjoy the place.
M. T.
Amazing food! Literally the best I've tasted for "American food" in a while. The place looks run down and shabby but the food is too good to care about that.
M. R.
Average food, cool atmosphere.
C. M.
Incredible food and drinks, one of the very best I've ever been too, the hidden tiki bar is amazing if you are lucky enough to be shown how to find it ;)
S. D.
I always have a good time in here. Excellent beer choice, friendly staff and a brilliant playlist (they should make them public)
A. H.
An okay bar in the Northern Quarter. Clearly would like to be a night club so they whack the music volume up so that you have to shout at your friends. No dance floor so having a boogie isn't really an option making the music volume level unnecessary.
Booze selection and prices are fairly typical of the area.
L. H.
Absolutely amazing food and staff thanks guys 👍
M. L.
Great atmosphere, both for an weekday evening date or for weekend clubbing. The upstairs room on a night out is definitely among the best nights out in Northern Quarter
F.
Awesome hidden cocktail bar!
T. T.
The service is friendly and not pushy, plenty of time given to eat and chat. Ribs and greens...very nice indeed!
C. L.
Ok bar, looks small but more bars on different floors. Big group of friends got seats together. Will call again on next visit to Manchester.
J. C.
Nice noisy pub. Several beers on tab. Nice selection of ribs. It is fun here. They have a Hawaiian style bar upstairs...
R. D.
Pretty chilled, decent music, good variety of drinks and not too expensive. Plus it's open later than pretty much all other places around NQ through the week
J. E.
The best place for a late one!
A. D.
Its oknin here. I mainly visit for the upstairs tiki bar. The staff are amazing up there and the music is amazing.
It is always crammed with people and can get very sweaty but I love it
E. B.
The food was to die for. Order chicken burger, short rib, fries and some grilled peppers. Great selection of beers too!
H. R.
Nice bar with two levels of different music and room. People just mum's their own business chit chatting or trying to pull someone not really dancing.
D. H.
Had a great time, the burger was so good and the service was amazing. The waiter was hilarious very funky dude.
J. L.
Superb Food, Great beer. Nice chilled atmosphere and welcoming courteous staff!
T. J.
Great vibe, tasty food and the service was quick. What more do you want?
L. S.
What a nice place. Good beer and food. I went there alone for lunch and the tables in the middle are excellent! This would be my go to pub if I lived here, but too bad I dont.
B. A.
Lovely New York style bar located on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter. Huge selection of craft bottle beer, hand pulled ale and draft larger. Try the longboard on draft for a refreshing larger.
K. S.
Place was really full but despite that our drinks and food arrived almost instantly, staff was also very friendly. Plus the food was AMAZING.
S. P.
Don't love the aesthetic, bathrooms are a bit naff as well, bit cramped and small. But good choice of beers and staff friendly.
C. D.
A nice, modern bar with well made drinks
B. J.
Service and food is brilliant. Always made to feel welcome. Mixture of ages and types of clientele. Favourite bar in Manchester
T.
It's alright, the place has nice artwork around and some interesting fixtures on display, but the place is very sticky and dirty. Could do with a proper clean down. Fairly typical prices for the northern quarter (overpriced) and the customer service is average.
J. T. (.
Fantastic venue in the heart of Manchester
J. B.
Really tasty burger and lovely terrace. Nice and quiet on a week day.
M. A.
Great selection of beers, cocktail were lighting up regularly to add to the drink served. Good atmosphere for a few early evening drinks.
O. A.
Awesome space to grab drinks to live dance music. Dancefloors isn't the biggest, but you'll be sure to have a good time.
J. G. (.
Good menu and the music slaps
What more can you possibly want?

Alittle rough and ready
S. B.
Friendly bar staff, a good choice of craft beers and ales
A. B.
Only a four because I haven't had the courage to go upstairs. Best atmosphere on Thomas Street, beer is ace too!
A. R.
Good beer selection and nice atmosphere. Could do with some heaters above the tables outside though for the chilli winter months.
S. A.
The food was excellent and the cocktail making class we took with Cameron was fantastic, I'd definitely recommend it 👍
E. C.
As always good ribs, and truffle fries are back!!!! But sadly you can't find upstairs and order or even bring drinks from the downstairs bar.
L. V. P.
This Is The BEST place to have a hidden drink in Manchester. It's like stepping into another realm of existance. Superb drinks and atmosphere.
T. T.
50% off deals in January, the burgers were decently sized but the ribs were huge, if you got the full sized rack
G. S.
Always been a favourite place of mine. So much more to it than meets the eye. A really great beer selection too.
K. W.
Whent in 12-30pm in the morning not busy had to use the app to long to get a drink girl could have took our drinks order when we sat down
S. L.
Excellent service and location. They're also managing covid very well.
A. B.
A really nice bar, good atmosphere. The Cane & Grain beer is lovely, well worth a visit if you are in Manchester.
M. E.
From secret doors to being extremely well fed. I'd highly recommend stopping by!
J. T.
My favourite bar in the NQ! Whether It's going for a quiet drink and bite to eat or a more mental night out, Cane and Grain can accommodate!

J. T.
The bar back with blue hair is lovely. And all the staff were very welcoming. Had an amazing experience!

Good atmosphere, average food, the waitress could use some anger management therapy, would come again for the barman and beers.
J. L.
Hip American style bar with a great selection of craft beers and awesome ribs. A bit pricey but worth a visit!
D. T.
Very innovative cocktails as well as classics such as old fashion and espresso martini, upstairs bar is quieter than downstairs

M. R.
Only had drinks but it was a nice and relaxed place with good seating and balanced selection of drinks.
T. C.
Food was nice but it isba very small menue
F. C.
Good cocktails and table service however, the cocktails are a tad on the expensive side compared to other great locations in NQ (e.g. Dusk till Pawn).
L. “. H.
Sick meaty meals and good beer
Z. D.
One of my favourite places to go on a night out in nq, the bouncers aren't power hungry either

M. A.
The staff and food were excellent only 4 stars due to limited veggie options

C. C.
Nice atmosphere, exotic inde beverages, not the cheapest, but that's not why you're here.
s. F.
Really top place, great food & drink options, very cool decor and some sweet tunes.
I. G.
great environment but can sometimes be a bit cramped, nice cocktails and the food is mostly okay
