Reviews of Castle Hotel
L. B.
Lovely, old, proper pub, good choice of ales, friendly, helpful staff.
The atmosphere here is always friendly and fun. Great place to sink a few.
L. M. L.
Amazing historical pub at the heart of Manchester. Great selection of cask and friendly staff. Athmosphere is outstanding and their selection of music is pure joy. A must go for sure.

First visited this Robinsons pub in the 1970's. It has always served excellent real ale. The interior is little changed and of historic value. The front bar area can get very busy. I watched Scotland v Peru here in 1978. There are two more rooms down the corridor with live music often in the back room. Visited many times over the years when on City centre pub crawls.
R. B.
Real historic gem. Great beers too! Seek it out...
J. C.
Good music with juke box.
Good choice of beers.
Great atmosphere and vibe.
R. P.
Great place for a gig, Paradise Circus were just fantastic. Wish more people could get in to this extremely international venue. The real ales are fantastic and at real prices.
K. Y.
Classic old man's pub in Manchester NQ. No frills, dark, dingy, but with good atmosphere and good drinks.
M. C.
Great pub and music venue, full of character and great beers.
A. B.
Proper old school looking boozer. Is small and cramped but has a good atmosphere. There's a gig room out the back and more seating upstairs. Always worth a visit if you can fit in.
J. H.
There's something about this place. You can't put your finger on it. It's what a pub should be. The bar staff look after you. There's a reasonable selection of beer. It's light at the front (with a nice room upstairs which is open in the evenings) and a great room at the back which is dark so nothing detracts from the conversation. You can bring your own lunch. On the evenings it has a back room which showcases smaller bands. There's a small yard at the back where you can drink outside, but not much sun.

T. T.
Great pub, lovely staff, better for a drink than a gig, the room for gigs is a bit too small for me.
K. P.
This is a great venue for live music. It's so good to be going back here for gigs after such a long break.
R. L.
Great pub, great selection and lovely bar tenders 🤩🥰. Also very edgy vibe!!!
T. C.
Good friendly pub excellent service from the bar staff. Really good ale 🍺
M. C.
Great pub and music venue, full of character and great beers.

This is a lovely venue and on a Saturday night leading up to Christmas was absolutely packed to the point of creaking. It feels like it hasn't had any love since the 70s and some people will like that as it has authenticity and thus far has avoided the constant wave of gentrification.
There are several little alcoves peppered throughout the place that people were gathered in enjoying a chat and a pint.
As far as live music goes the venue was on the ground floor, easy enough to find and would hold at best 60 people uncomfortably and 40 comfortably. The stage is tiny. The acoustics were very good and I thoroughly enjoyed my night there. Two bands played when we were there- local Mancunian outfit The Happy Soul (Very decent and well worth going to see on their own) and a fantastic American band hailing from Asheville, North Carolina called River Whyless (Fantastic full sound and made magical music). 👍
N. K.
Flagship Northern Quarter pub. Does a great Guinness. Great jukebox too!
S. C.
Absolutely fantastic pub, an array of ale selection. Not to mention Charlotte for her fantastic knowledge on beers and welcoming customer service. Brilliant night out 😁
C. W.
Always amazing! Really good beer selection and the staff are great. It's an older style pub with snugs and mahogany wood. There is often live music and there are small outside spaces in the back. Never change!!
C. G.
Great small venue to catch up-and-coming bands from across the UK/world. It's a small, narrow venue so it can get crowded and be a bit difficult to find a seat sometimes, but as a venue it is such a vital space for new bands, you can't fault it for that.
S. V.
Such a pub conglomerate! A pub of all trades, if you will. It's a common to see couples enjoying a canoodle as it is to see groups of hipsters keen to see interesting live music, or football fans huddled around the jukebox. Lovely staff and great manager!
J. O.
Great beer and live bands. What's not to like.
R. L.
Went to see a gig here for the first time. Great mix of people, young and older, at the old bar and the gig space was tiny but that just makes for a better atmosphere. Loved it.
C. S.
Amazing old, traditional drinkers pub in the heart of Manchester. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Good selection of Robinson's beers.
S. W.
Great little pub, lively and good choice 9f beers
B. b.
Always a good atmosphere in here. Friendly pub in a good location
T. K.
Top manc pub ...lots of choice of ales ...and a beltin Duke box 👍
M. S.
Great venue, happy staff and all round good vibe
N. P.
Really loved the place, not so much space, it's a bar and a couple of chairs, but it has everything that a bar needs, friendly staff, large selection of drinks, even a jukebox .
Great to visit while walking around town, have a drink (or two, or ten) and a chat with some friendly people.
J. S.
Fantastic venue! ALL HAIL HYENA, The Empty Page, Three Headed Monkey & RoBoT aLiEn. Photos by trustafox photography
k. a.
Nice atmosphere good beer. Friendly staff.
M. K.
Great atmosphere, staff could be more attentive.
A.
Lovely traditional pub with really good atmosphere.
s. j.
Good beers very busy difficult to get a seat
K. L.
One of Manchester's finest ale houses also famous for its contribution to live music. Great selection of music also played on the juke box and there is a tremendous choice of real ales.
D. N.
Amazing venue, good drinks but just a proper good atmosphere. Proper place
I. C.
the greatest and amazing crazy pub in manchester 💕
S. C.
Live music, good range of beers.
D. H.
Top gaff, great venue, great night out £6 for 4 bands....beer a tad expensive 👍
d.
Great pub very friendly.also has live music
F.
Friendly as out. Great music n a band on every night which you pay for. What's not to love
J. S.
Friendly and warm staff, nice place to drink with your choice of music upstairs!
K. T.
I went along to hear my friends band play. I found the staff and customers very friendly and chatty. The room with the stage was small and intimate. The smoking area is covered in promotional stickers from bands, it's quite fascinating.
I went alone, and as a woman of a certain age 😉 I found it a very hospitable venue and would tell any visitor to Manchester to drop in for a friendly drink. I really felt safe and welcome. If course I have only been there the once so far but I imagine I'd find a similar warm atmosphere any time.
There is a very good range of craft beers at reasonable prices for a city centre pub. I really didn't take any notice of other refreshments on offer so can't tell you more than that.
I intend to visit again and take in some more live music and look forward to it very much.
M. W.
Really nice pub, good music, friends staff and patrons and outdoor smoking space (though not nice enough to be outdoor seating)
D. C.
Music was good small room but new bands
M. C.
Update July 2020
Reopened good real ale (In CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2020). Limited out door seating. Table service/card payment only. The cosy back rooms may be a little small at this time for some. The return of live music will have to wait for better times. The owners/staff seem to have taken all the appropriate safety measures.
Enjoyed my visit.
R. S.
Easy to walk past and looks tiny when you walk in but there's lots of rooms at the back and upstairs. Friendly staff, well kept Robinson's ale at an alright price. Nice atmosphere, old fashioned bar and look. Jukebox with good selection. Has band's on a lot by the look of the notice board. Will go again.
T. G.
One of the best pubs in central Manchester. Good Robinson's real ale.
S. M.
Great Venue. I saw Leah Senior there, lovely atmosphere.
Nearly a fiver for a pint of Estrella though?!!
L. S.
Love this little spot! It's so nice to see an old and authentic looking pub in amongst the hipster bars of the Northern Quarter. They've got a good size gig and events space but it can get very busy on gig nights! Extra seating upstairs
A. A.
The pub has a good variety of real ale's and as a pub I would highly recommend. However if you are going to see a gig in the tiny back room prepare to stand shoulder to shoulder with sweat dropping off your nose. Really good jukebox too.
a. e.
Lovely venue and great pub with a good selection
D. H.
Great traditional pub great atmosphere good ale
P. H.
Oh this is a brilliant live music venue AND it's also it's own pub aside that. So if you just want a few drinks and a night out you can use the front room or a really cosy lounge behind that, and the live music takes place at the very back in a separate room.
Saw EXTERNAL MENACE in 2007 and KILLER PASCAL & STRAWBERRY GUY in 2020 :)
P. B.
Good traditional pub with wide range of beers and live music
L. H.
Cute little traditional style pub nestled in the Northern Quarter. Great place to just be. It's quirky layout will leave you sitting cosy to your neighbour but everyone is friendly here! Check out the gig room if you get a chance too - lots of great acts passing through!
T. P.
Good venue for small events, though absence of opening windows or air conditioning in the function room makes for sauna like conditions in the summer...
h. d. (.
Small quirky hotel come pub come music venue. I went there to watch Carl North and the Lonely Hearts single launch. It music hall is tiny but intimate and friendly. And the historical looking architecture adds to the atmosphere. The sound system is good and the lighting was just nice for such a small stage. You were pretty much on the same level as the band so it really felt like you were involved.
The bar seems pretty decent too, they do real ales and ciders. I had some very tasty cider (although I can't remember it's name). There also seemed to be a dining area behind the bar.
K. V.
A great pub full of character.
Has a very bizarre layout it us a thin pub but stretches far back so it us a lot bigger than it looks from the outside.
Loads of drinks options usually have what I am looking for.
That back room has a large seating area and contains a piano which gives it some additional character.
Will continue to go here frequently
A. M.
I went here for a gig and it was a nice intimate venue for gigs. The toilet is grand and the bar seemed fine, a real traditional British pub vibe, not modern at all. But nice because it stayed true to its vintage pretty much through out the building. Good Northern Quarter location and good spot for gigs
R. R. B.
Nice classic British pub. The music is not loud so if you want to drink a beer and have conversation this is the place to go. Interior design is really cool. Prices are alright not too expensive but not the cheapest pub either
D. B.
Great pub. Good beers, nice atmosphere.
M. M.
Oh, the Castle.
Many fond memories of this place, and for good reason. The staff and the atmosphere make it. It's a bit dark, and a bit sticky, and a little bit smelly, but the beer is always good and the clientele friendly. I don't recall ever going in there and not chatting to a complete stranger.
Gets busy on a weekend, but squeeze yourself in there and get a pint with the locals.
H. H.
Great live music venue!
A. D.
Lovely little side pub with a great selection of ales. They have regular rock nights in the back room, and there's a small outdoor area when the sun is out. The place has a bit of a rustic wooden feel that gives it a nice atmosphere to enjoy.
A. L.
Treading the line between old man and hipster pub just right. Has the feel of a proper English pub from the 60s, reminds me of the pubs that used to be open everywhere, before bars where a thing.
Great selection of beers.
m. m.
great place for drinks and gigs
p.
I really like The Castle Hotel. Some great ales (including occasionally the amazing Titanic Plum Porter). It's also a great place to watch bands playing. The band room can get very hot and sweaty, but I've seen some amazing gigs here. In summary, The Castle Hotel is a Manchester institution.
R. B.
One of manchesters hidden gems, some great ales on offer in here, Always visit when in the area
B. B.
A really good music venue, or somewhere you can drop in for a reasonable ale. The beer garden is very small and this isn't a place to go if you want to sit out. The staff could be nicer, but are not unpleasant. The service can sometimes be a bit slow.
W. C.
A great old fashioned real Manchester city centre pub, no fancy frills, but staff are great, you will be intimately close to bands, as the rooms have not been changed from there regular job, as a city centre pub! I love gigs here, and at sister venue The Eagle Inn over in Salford, support small venues like The Castle, they work hard to give you a great city experience!🤓💛✌️
T. B.
Brilliant little pub in the city centre, tucked away from the busy streets but still attracts a good crowd. There's a beer "garden" which is just about okay for a few people to smoke in, but very little actual garden which isn't really surprising. The beer is well kept and varied. Haven't been in when there's been music on yet, so I'll have to go back. Such a shame.
T. C.
Really good selection of Ales and other alcoholic beverages! Been there a few times when they've had a live band on never experienced bad music there. Only negative is the poor decor in the pub.
J. T.
Great beer. Excellent juke box. Spent a great afternoon there with mates.
M. G.
Very popular pub and gig venue. Always excellent beers and ales on tap, and a neat little yard out the back for smokers. It can get a bit cramped on a weekend, but don't be put off - it's a marvellous place.
M. H.
A truly wonderful pub that hasn't changed or lost its character in the many years I have popped in for a pint. It has entertainment with music and comedy on various nights. It has links with The Band on the Wall a well recognised venue around the corner in Swan St. The Castle always delights with guest beers of an exceptional quality. Friendly atmosphere and helpful staff.
N. H.
The toilets are grim. However the live room is good, though small and we saw some good young bands there. Can't remember them all but one was 10 Volt and they were fantastic.
J. L.
In a nutshell , it's just the best, wee, coolest, coziest ,old boozer in Mcr.
C. P.
Only discovered this place a few weeks ago when going to see Brent Cobb perform (check him out, he's brilliant). The place has a really cool vibe and drinks aren't overly priced for the city centre. Staff were great.
A. F.
Great pub, full of atmosphere.
P. E.
This establishment hosts music performances. It is not the largest of venues and the performance area can only be described as intimate with minimal seating available. The sound system was excellent, the staff welcoming and the experience very enjoyable.
T. P.
After moving from Sheffield to Manchester I have pined for a proper northern pub. After about two years of searching I think I have finally found a slice of home. After all the so called craft beers of the Northern Quarter I was delighted to walk into the Castle Hotel. Busy but not crazy loud. A good choice of beer (not just a choice of IPA) and an actual pub feel. For me I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been here before.
Not going to lie, it won’t be to every ones’ taste. It’s rough around the edges (a plus in my books), the decor is of its time (i.e. no pallets, no fancy light bulbs, no fake books in alcoves) and the upstairs is like walking into a living room. So if that isn’t your kind of place then please don’t spoil it for the rest of us and find a lavender infused DDH with a scoop of ice cream somewhere else.
J. C.
Perhaps the best pub in Manchester- interesting crowd, good drinks, three different rooms, and a great (small) gig venue in the middle. Opens late, decent jukebox
E. C.
Been going here for almost 10 years. My favourite pub in tbe city centre. Great juke box, great beer, lovely atmosphere, no pretence despite a touch of the Peaky Blinders. And of course had a genuine Manchester Egg!! (bring em back)
Love it!!!!! Love it!!!!!
D. G.
One of Manchester's, nay the whole United Kingdom's most splendiferous pubs. A truly wide and magnificent variety of beers, ales, whiskies, gins and wines, served with magnanimous grace and pleasure by a most pleasant and welcoming bar team, all for a surprisingly fair and decent price.
A welcoming escape from the stresses of one's days and nights, call into The Castle for a revitalising wet replenishment of the casually alcoholic variety.
G. C.
Great traditional pub atmosphere and original features, a must visit
R. B.
Came here for a rather intimate gig for a guy called Tristan Mackay, a busker turned #1 iTunes chart topper who I've known for many years.
Decent small venue, could probably hold less than 100 people but the lighting and acoustics were great.
The rest of the pub has a nice traditional feel to it, and the beer was reasonably priced for Manchester's Northern Quarter too.
J. E.
A little on the grungy side in here with it's dark rooms and live music. Clean though, and some good beer choices. Attracts a nice crowd of drinkers, mostly in their 20s and 30s. Don't expect much from the beer garden mind!
T. K.
Lovely old fashioned pub with a warm atmosphere
T. H.
Top pub. Great selection of beers and always has some good alternative style music on the jukebox. Also has some live bands on too. Usually has plum porter on too (a favourite of mine).
J. M.
The Castle is a proper traditional pub and a must for any visit to the Northern Quarter. They have a solid range of ales and world beers on the bar - including Brooklyn Lager and Veltins. It also boasts a modest gig space out the back and a teeny terrace outside.
A. C.
Great little pub tucked away in the NQ. Couple of rooms to nest away in, proper old-style boozer, good jukebox and plenty of live music performed in its own room and arty events taking place upstairs. Good ales. Pay this place a visit !
A. A.
Cosy, friendly pub to end the night in. Also Plum Porter on tap 👏
D. D.
A very warm and welcoming place staff was very nice and very polite.
K. B.
Good Ale, great little music venue.
T. I.
Nice traditional British pub. Fantastic atmosphere and friendly staff. Good range of beers at reasonable prices. My favorite pub in Manchester so far.
d. h.
Bit cold in the bar area. Apart from that it's ok
J. C. S.
A stylish pub with a long history and lovely traditional British Pub architecture. There's a good range of drinks, friendly staff, a cool atmosphere and seating in the bar area and separate rooms. Recommended place for any Manchester pub crawl, although it can get busy on a Friday or Saturday evening, prepare for a speak easy type squeeze.
E. D.
Good place for live music. We managed to see an upcoming live act at a festival that had been in progress. I would recommend the music at this venue. The acoustics and views are excellent.
J. B.
Decent beer and gin selection, quirky place with live music and nice people. Quite small so nice and cosy on a busy night
A. L.
A proper traditional pub selling a good range of beers. Has a jukebox, and on Saturday there's bands in the back room and lots of acts throughout the week. There's also an upstairs room too.
P. M.
Wish I had caught the bands earlier
J. F.
This is Robinsons brewery only pub in Manchester city centre. There is a good choice of their ales plus guest beers. The castle is well known for quality live music.
H. B.
Superb pub in the old style. Great ales on hand pump.

j. J.
A mix young and old. Decent band venue. Staff not rude just could be more friendly and open. Not as diverse but usually common with pubs. Decent place
C. F.
It's okay, if it didn't have a place for bands to perform it wouldn't be worthwhile being there really, and the room was ridiculously hot!! But they had one of my favourite bands on so....it's okay!
K. D.
Nice place. Good Ales (Plum Porter...buff!). Very good rooms to book that makes it great for do whatever you want there with friends or even mooore people like parties, gigs, movies. Awesome.

Nice lil spot. friendly staff. good prices.
S.
Brilliant atmosphere, friendly bar guys, fab juke box
T. M.
Not a bad stopping off place between two other pubs
D. R.
Great little, traditional pub. Superb beer selection and the tiniest of music venues, makes for a great night out.
C. L. M. 1.
Small bar and venue in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. Warm atmosphere, friendly staff. There is a music venue at the back, where there are events almost every day. The only downside is the vile relentless stink coming from the toilets.
j. J.
A mix young and old. Decent band venue. Staff not rude just could be more friendly and open. Not as diverse but usually common with pubs. Decent place
C. B.
Absolutely love the Castle Hotel! Classic old pub, that gets really busy at the weekends. Always has a great mixture of people in there and a great selection of beers.
A. A.
A bit crowded and busy but the consert for Megan O'Neil was amazing
S. H.
Really nice traditional pub feel but is also very clean and clearly hasnbeen refurbished recently. Gets very busy on a friday night. Quite expensive. £4.50 for a bottle of peroni! No contactless payment.
K. D.
Nice place. Good Ales (Plum Porter...buff!). Very good rooms to book that makes it great for do whatever you want there with friends or even mooore people like parties, gigs, movies. Awesome.
R. C.
Classic pub with fine tiling in the front room and a cosy intimacy in the middle room. Much more space since upstairs was opened up a few years back. Live music in the back room
C. C.
Cosy and friendly, live music in the back too.

Your Friday night has led you here. More whiskeys than you can count have passed your lips and you feel the need for a different type of intoxication. Just a fleeting digression from the hard liquor. A pint is what you need. The Castle Hotel seems like as good a choice as any. From the outside it looks like your kind of establishment. Dark with a warm glow. The bouncer looks you up and down. You look back with fake sincerity. He permits you to edge in through the narrow door. It's crowded inside but in a good way. Everyone seems to be friends. You shake the momentary thought of talking to someone new and carefully navigate the bodies crowding the bar. Ale. This should settle your stomach. The barman places your potation in front of you. A brief moment passes as you watch the head settle. Someone behind you pushes their arm under yours to claim their space at the bar. Your companion, you forget her name, motions towards the back of the building. She wants a smoke. You want a smoke. You follow her down a narrow corridor, past stairs winding up to the distant sound of a jukebox. A band plays a lo-fi version of Otis Redding's "Don't Mess With Cupid" in a side room. It reminds you of your father. The church of smokers is all the way at the back. It's small. No, tiny. Barely a patio but it'll do. You pick a vacant spot but are slowly forced against the wall by the tipsy congregation. You don't say a word. People always have their back to you anyway. You don't mind. You have enough space to drink your pint and suck down the sweet taste of toasted tobacco. That's all you want. Your companion makes conversation with a nearby couple. You join in.
C. W.
Nice pub. Good range of well-kept beer. Excellent people watching in the evening. Venue for bands and standup. Good service
A. O.
One of the only places in NQ with late license. Always busy and lively. Good beer selection. There are plenty events going on, so always good chance to discover something new.
C. T.
Quirky old pub. Had a great evening standing watching a band perform in back room. Ashton lane. Excellent band. Crowded room, no seating.
j. c.
Just love this pub and it's staff. Busy most weekends we visit but can't recommend it enough, great jukebox, good atmosphere.
T. W.
If I could only go to one pub for the rest of my life it would be this one. Great beer, great music, great craic, great atmosphere
f.
Best mulled cider in town!!
G. H.
Great beer selection. Friendly atmosphere. Good room for events. Can get busy but fast service.
A. M.
Big selection of beer and prompt service on a busy thursday night. Cheap too, if you are drinking anything but premium lager
B. S.
Lovely pub with a wide beer selection and a great, intimate gig venue in the back. Only docked a star for no card machine.
N. P.
This is my kind of pub which retains the character of an old pub. Good mix of people. I am not a wine bar person I like proper pubs.
M. S.
The most spiritual awakening you will find in Manchester. Will satisfy every need, from a quick pint to poetry night.. Rais a glass to many more years!
J. B.
Brilliant music almost every night and great choice of drinks, fantastic atmosphere and great staff!!
I. V.
One of my favourite old style pubs, great exterior and interior and a live music venue at night.
R.
Nice pub with small music venue room, second time I have seen Funke and the two tone baby there. You should check him out if he plays again.
M. b.
Really good pub. Worth a visit
D. T.
Pleasant place to have a pint
B. Q.
Great pub, always visit when in Manchester. Huge selection of beers, lovely old style pub
E. C.
Great vibes. Jukebox produces consistently good music. Large and good choice of ales.
R. H.
It's an honest, traditional pub with decent beer and live music.
S. W.
Nice pub. Good for gigs. Choice of beers not so great for my taste
A. P.
Very cosy pub with great selection of beers. Perfect for having a pint and reading a book.
D. C.
Great place to drink, every so slightly too small however the atmosphere makes up for that
V. r.
Lovely old pub, tucked away up a side street just away from town centre. Lots of period features, good selection of ales
D. F.
Great quality live music, and just a great old school boozer. Not pretentious at all, and perfect if you fancy sitting somewhere and putting the world to rights.
S. B.
Really great little pub in the Northern Quarter in Manchester! Nice little live room and very friendly folk! Recommended!
R. W.
