Took the scenic route in my search for the elusive Black Jack Brewery Manchester Stout. Found the actually brewery that Google maps took me to. Met up with a Mr Darcy, having worked four years with BJ Brewery, said the brewery was closed to the public for now until the weather warms up. But he was kind enough to direct me to the Mackie Mayor. Situated in the former Smithfield’s meat market, Jack in the Box serves Black Jack’s brews in this is a hidden gem in the NQ. Lawrence, the bar master, here at Jack in the Box bar (not to be confused with the US Fast Food Chain) was friendly with a boomin’ tenor that cuts through the hub bub of the lunch time crowd here, was nice to share a history snippet of the venue. It had many lives - indeed once a bustling meat market, later a rave venue as well as other iterations. Now it’s a shared community food hall - a modern day “WeFood and WeDrink” perhaps? Sampled the three stouts and chose the Stroopwafel. Sounds a bit Deutsche but tastes Colombian - as it has a noticeable coffee finish. What were you thinking? Tired of the WFH rut? Pop in here for a pint and maybe a bowl at the fresh ramen bar across from the bar?

Brilliant bar showcasing artisan beers from an independent craft brewery. Always includes several hand pumped real ales, usually including a dark ale. Quality is uniformly high.
Great setting in a quirky food hall in the historic market building. Lots of excellent food choices from adjoining outlets.

Great purveyor of Blackjack brews on tap from cask and keg. Also a decent selection of cans and bottles from other breweries.

Between 6 to 8 real ales on. Mostly Blackjack tho all on good form. From £4/pint.
