Reviews of Lass O'Gowrie Manchester
M.
Very good pub once part of long gone Threllfalls brewery. I used to work nearby on Cambridge St and had my leaving do here almost exactly 40 years ago. Lovely pub and very popular with students. Good pint of the house beer.
m. s.
Initially went to have food and drink as we were going to watch a show at the nearby Theatre...
Unfortunately for some reason no food available for another 2 weeks..
So only had a drink and left...
Nice little pub though with a small beer garden to the side...
B. F.
Great selection of beers and friendly staff. The pub has a great feel and the music is exactly to my taste, if your nearby definitely pop in
S. L.
The Lass hosted our works party and it was the perfect venue!
The entire process from planning to delivering the event was overseen by the manager Josh who made sure it was stress free and exactly what we wanted.
The evening was fantastic! Seamless service, great food and a team that are happy friendly and couldn’t do more to welcome and look after us, they are an absolute credit!
I can’t thank Josh and his team enough for their hospitality and hosting such a fantastic evening! I would recommend this venue 100% and will be back!

This is a beautiful building just outside of the city centre. I have been in the past and enjoyed it more. We went on the night of the quizz and as we weren't partaking that may have hampered my enjoyment, but it was too loud to talk and the staff seemed somewhat disinterested in serving. So it was ok, but not the experience I remember it being on my last visit several years ago.
J. B.
I enjoy the range of alcohol free options here, and the smoking area is fairly nice too when it’s not too busy. Though it can be scary as it’s a balcony over the bank of the River Medlock, and when it gets windy you can really feel it rock haha … it’s one of my favourite places to visit in Manchester that’s near Oxford Road anyway
P. B.
Dog friendly.
Great bar just off of the Canal Street area, really good tunes playing and a great selection of drinks.
Small out door area too, something for everything.
Will be back to try the pies and scotch eggs for sure.
K. W.
Doesn't look much from outside but open the door to a warm and friendly interior. It was busy but plently of seats and food options really good.
A.
Great place. Discount for CAMRA members buying Ale 😁
Also dog friendly and just a nice pub 😁
P. B.
Good drinks for a decent price. Atmosphere was fun and service was pretty fast. Overall enjoyable time.
L. K.
Visiting Manchester yet again for last date of The Lovely Eggs tour. We stay at the Princess St Ibis and the Lass is just around the corner and is now our local. It's a long standing establishment and has a great community feel to it. Good range of beers, does food (check times). The smoking area is a great meeting place. Best thing about the Lass is the staff - without exception, lovely people.
G. M.
Great pub tucked away off the main street. Loads of cask ales and beers on tap. Nice traditional feel to the place and staff were excellent. You can taste the ales before deciding which one.
R. R.
Always a lovely pub to visit.. great choice of cask ale
S. C.
Very good selection of beer in superbly refurbished surroundings. Great food too; I can recommend the fish and chips. Service was very friendly.
R. P.
Return visit to newly renovated pub & a great job. Still a top range of ales & good food menu.4 of us had different choices and all great quality at reasonable prices.
K.
The food was okay. The pie was tasty until I reached the burnt part. The nachos were extremely salty. My friend had the fish and chips, it was good.
S. R.
Nice pub with some great beers. Popped in for a couple of pints with work colleagues on a Friday evening and enjoyed the atmosphere and old "proper pub" decor. Quite a chilled place and the staff are good and efficient at quickly serving. I didn't try the food, but it was available.
S. C.
Excellent pub with brilliantly friendly staff. Haven't tried the food yet but heard its Great.
A. W.
Decent boozer with friendly staff. Pretty quiet when we went in and they called last orders at 9pm - which is a first for me in a UK pub.
m. y.
Friendly, helpful staff. Very clean. Mac & cheese was so tasty! Reasonable prices too.
S. C.
Great food, Great Ale, steady flow in the afternoon went back in evening the place was full & Great atmosphere
C. M.
One of the first pubs I visited in Manchester (over 20 years ago) and still one of the best.
C. W.
Nice pub and good selection of ales
b. o.
Great atmosphere, very lively with good beer and food.
k. p.
Lovely pub, great atmosphere and never too crowded
J. Z.
Love the pub, drinks a bit pricey but it's in central of Manchester, definitely recommend to visit, try their bar menu. Friendly staff great atmosphere.
V.
First time popping in here and it was very enjoyable. Nice helpful young chap served us. Gave good advice about beers. A good selection on. A great atmosphere inside with good music playing in the background. I’ll definitely come again.
M. D.
Really friendly pub with great music playing. Nice choice of beers.
Not sure the closing times were as advertised as on the Tuesday we were in bell rang at about 10:10pm, but to be honest I was probably ready for home then anyway. Really enjoyed my 3 evenings there, highly recommended.
J. I.
The Wednesday open mics are grea!! Mike (the open mic host) is super friendly and the bar staff are just as nice. I love the cozy outdoor area over the canal. A good pub with character. Always loving all the variety of people that hang out here.
S. W.
Good old pub, and the beer's improved a lot since many years ago. It can be difficult to find a seat sometimes. Also has decking outside by the, at this point, tiny river Medlock. I had lots of fun at the quiz on Thursdays, but might be a bit biased because my team won. :D
M. U.
14/04/22: Old school boozer. Plenty of craft ale and lagers on tap! Thursday night was quiz night!
L. E.
Love this pub. Friendly staff, good vibes and great bar. Recommended.
J. H.
Great, quick service at the bar, good beer. Would recommend to a mate.
S. P.
Great pub great atmosphere reasonable beer prices
S. M.
Friendly good menu. Guinness was good Abbots Ale was bit off.
B. C.
Great food, girl at bar was friendly and helpful when selecting a beerv i wanted
O. P.
Nice traditional pub in the heart of the city. Right next to university of Manchester. Great real ale served here.
A. T.
Lovely warm welcome for us and the dog Whinny. Great beer too.
D. R.
Delicious food, people friendly, staff courteous and helpful, good value
C. C.
Not a bad pub, close to town and easy to find.
Quite small inside and we stumbled upon a pub quiz which didn't seem to be going well...
Drinks are cheap though, good for a student night out.
L. K.
Not been here since before the pandemic. Staff are lovely, place clean and welcoming. Unfortunately no food available anymore which is a real shame as they did a tasty food menu previously. No not drinks now either. Hopefully things will get back to normal here soon, but still enjoy a trip to the Lass.
T.
Great pub, been in quite a few times and always enjoy a pint here, very good selection of ales
C. S.
Amazing staff, excellent service and dog friendly 👏
P. R.
Very close to my office in Circle square, gives a proper vibe of a pub. Never too busy so was great to stop by after work for a couple of drinks before heading home
E. I.
Super. I'm from Bulgaria. I'm a Manchester City fan. Then on April 19, 2018, we became champions. I was at the Etihad Stadium. Take a walk, I found this bar. Dream again to come to Manchester and treat manager with a beer.
J. T.
Great pub with a traditional feel due to all the old original features! I used to go here a lot when I was in college (back in the 90's eek!) and this was the first time I'd been back in a while. It has definitely had a bit of an upgrade and felt brighter - the staff were helpful and the rules covid were observed well. It was easy enough to book a table and the table service was fast and efficient! Great place to go if you're near the Oxford Rd end of Manchester city centre 👍🏿
D. G.
Arrived just after opening so nice and quiet.
Friendly bar man on duty, had a good chat and laugh with him before we went outside.
Lovely little pub even if was the site of the oldest public toilet in Manchester, really interesting little pub and will visit again next time I'm in town
K. B.
Jac the Lancashire Hotpot here and it was so good.
M. H.
Very quick refreshments stop on the way from city centre to the O2 for a gig so not there long enough to fully soak in the vibe but everything was positive. Some creative beers on offer, a "creme brulee" ale was sampled by some, certainly unusual. All agreed worth a return visit.
A. S.
Traditional Pub within a walkable distance to Oxford Road Station.
C. H. (. H.
Excellent beer, great entertainment at night. Very friendly place.
d. t.
Great old school pub, quite large, traditional features, clean, does food and a great variety of drinks, good atmosphere and friendly staff
G. K.
Great pub, good selection of cask and keg beers. Nice atmosphere too. Its had a refurb but is still a great pub
A. P.
Great selection of beers, nice atmosphere.
S. L.
Smells a little funny to be honest and there's no food except a little crisps. Espresso martini was pretty mediocre but the fact that they have live music sometimes for free helps cover these downsides.
M. S.
We came here with our guests from abroad knowing that this is a traditional style pub and a very old one indeed here. Well, we liked it!
Because it is a pub, they don't take reservations. However, even though it was during a Saturday night, we were able to find a table and enjoyed our time there. My suggestion is even if you can't find an available place when you first enter to the pub, wait a little because the patrons there, as far as I observed, basically come, drink and leave in a fast pace :)
J. M.
It's a great pub, friendly and welcoming staff, decent price for a pint of cider, beer or ale and the quiz night on Thursdays is brilliant.
D. A.
Great pub in Manchester, near to the ibis hotel. Friendly staff, great beers & a brit pop vibe with oasis, Paul Weller etc pics on the wall & music playing. Tvs for the sport fan.
M. F.
Great pub to sit and chat with your friends. It's not a huge place but has loads of different nooks and crannies which gives it a very enjoyable atmosphere.
The bar area is fabulous, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The prices seem ok.
There is a veranda on one side where you can sit and look over the river, it was winter and cold when we visited so having not taken that option I can't report on it.
K. F.
Fab traditional pub
M. C.
Beautiful old pub with a heritage serving really good beer, friendly staff and a good crowd of people.
A. D.
Excellent beer and a proper pub
D.
The Pub is a old fashioned one, with old furniture. I like the flair and the atmosphere. They have good beer and affordable prices. Sadly they have no longer food, the pizza was good there. The bartender are friendly. There is a small space outside to sit and enjoy the beer. The best thing is, it is close to the hotel where I go everytime.
H. S.
The refreshing step away from the cliche pub that sells stone bakes pizza is very welcome. Especially when considering the delicious Manchester pub soul food it has been replaced with. Simple but bold and very memorable. This homely pub also plays great tunes, has a wide selection of ales and has an incredibly charming decor.
My only criticism would be the portion size for certain foods. Without a starter and a side you may find yourself rather hungry even after a main!
S. B.
Great pub which has recently undergone a bit of a refurb. Bit brighter inside now and the better for it. Always a varied choice of cask ales.
m. c.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff
H.
Great place to go after work, a nice standard traditional pub. The ales they have change once a week or so, so you never get bored of drinking there. They have a decent selection of bar snacks and they sell pizzas which were surprisingly good! The outside seating area is always packed when it's sunny but if you manage to get a spot, it's really nice as the canal runs below it.
K. E.
Great beer, food and staff
C. J.
Love this place, it’s our local for after work drinking but also have a lively atmosphere with comfy sofas, little books to sit in and friendly staff. They have a great selection of guest ales and they brew their own beer too, all at a great price. It feels like a traditional pub which has a lovely feel to it. Topped off with a large outside area in the summer that runs along the river it makes this place one of top places to go!
J. C.
A characterful vintage Manchester pub with an invariably good atmosphere and friendly service. Always a top night out.
J. T.
Excellent open mic on Wednesdays from Michael Webster. Best of local Manchester music
R. T.
Once a week on a Thursday is the Quiz night. Go with a Team from work, great atmosphere, good menu and a selection of craft beers. What more could you want from an old inner city pub with Victorian decor and a 21st century attitude to a night out.
H. R.
I'm often there for the pub quiz on Thursdays. It has loads of character and the people behind the bar are always friendly and happy to take the time to talk you through the ever-changing beer selection. Only once had a bad pint, and they sorted it out straight away, no fuss. I'll keep going back!
J. P.
Comfy pub, good pint and good food.
S. A.
Superb pub in the centre of Manchester, great ales, staff and setting. Bar is really good, throw back to how bars were. Music and ambiance are good too.
W. G. (.
Nice English style pub serving real ales and several lagers etc. Been in once at night and is very popular with students and Camra members. Limited menu but do range of burgers and pizzas. Nice old style interior. Also have outdoor seating overlooking the river.
D. B. F.
This is such a unique pub. Interesting things to see, and I particularly love the retro arcade machines from the 80's, which you are very unlikely to see in any other pub. I sampled the food and beer and thought it was excellent. I even attended a few of the computer club nights and had a really good time.
I was informed recently that the pub is closing. It is such a shame to lose a pub like this. I can't imagine that it will be ever emulated anywhere else. Consider the pub was voted "best pub of the year" in 2012, this just doesn't make sense :-(
It will be sadly missed.
S. B.
One of Manchester's oldest and still one of the best pubs around. The clientele may change but the character of the pub still remains. It's been a while since I've been in but still love the place. I recommend a visit. A good range of beers and food.
D. M.
Not been in here for ages but it hasn't lost any of the old charm and great selection of ales. Reasonable prices...for these days! Must get back soon😊
M. G.
A fine pub with really good beer on offer on the taps and in the fridge. It's old school, but in a good way. It's a good place to watch sports too, as the crowd that are in there won't make you want to die. The Lass has gigs, theatre, and other cool events on. It's a gem.
A. E.
Great pub, our local after uni. Despite being close to Oxford road and the University it isn't that studenty with mainly postgrads and academics coming from the uni. Great selection of real ales and cider and craft beer. Plenty of seating away from the bar with comfy chairs. Good atmosphere form the music being played, but not too load so you can still have a conversation with your friends.
a. s.
Bit pricey but totally worth it. It's the centre i guess. New beers every week and the quality is top notch. Iv seen regular live music and dancing on Fridays too. This is my favourite pub.
Edit: Still come here and stand by last statement. Had some food for first time, pie and mash £6.50 and it's worth it I'd say.
I. V.
Lovely old pub,all on one level couple of different rooms and smoking area outside with seating, couple of real ales and usually lagers,
P. G.
Nice pub in the city for a beer after a meeting. Just a pity there is no menu just pies! Which I'm sure are very nice but when you need something a bit more substantial. It's a pity because can't fault the staff or the beer
N. E.
One of the best pubs in Manchester. Full of character, atmosphere, ecclectic artwork & . .. very friendly staff . . They actually clean the underneath of the seats ... . Quite why, I have no idea, however . . . I guess, it's an indication of how much they value your custom.
Highly recommended.
F. R.
Great pub, stylish, nice music, nice beer, nice people.
M. C.
Nice bar, decorated in classic style. Beers they have an over are nice, although there is a small selection for the size of the place. Good atmosphere, and not too busy as it is slightly out of the way.
V. O.
Absolutely the best pub around Oxford road train station.
R. B.
Beautiful pub from the outside but the lack of choice of draft beer and wines left it a million miles away from what is expected from the green king pub brand.
L. B.
Decent old school city centre boozer. Moretti on draught and a good selection of drinks.
Sat inside but did spot an outside beer garden overlooking the canal too.
I. N.
Nice pub with a decent ale selection. Very convenient location, but just a few yards off the 'beaten track' means a nice, less rowdy atmosphere than others nearby. One of my favourite central pubs.
J. R.
Absolute must for people who love their ales and their history. Great pub with a warm welcome and friendly bar staff.
M. F.
Properly old traditional pub in the centre of Manchester. Service was great and the ambiance very nice for an after work drink. I was there on a Tuesday night so it was beautifully peaceful and relaxing.
S. L.
Good friendly service with great beer and spirit selection. Nice place for a drink and some great tunes to boot!
N. K.
Genuine traditional pub, has lost none of It's character over the years.
N. H.
Nice local bar with good beers and cocktails.
A.
Great pub to watch the Euros! Speedy service and clean. Only downside is a very weird smells which lingers, smells a bit like a sewage now and then 🤭
M. S.
I can't get my eyes of the walls from this Pub - lots to see and great photographs, pictures and other curiosities! Relaxing atmosphere and a charming outside area next to the Medlock river and under Manchester Bridges. Friendly staff and good ales even though they are a bit on the dearer site of the areas other Pubs. They have on different weekdays specials on for food & drinks but the portions are very small and the salad coming with it looks a bit sad in the plate. Even though I like the Pub but I wouldn’t go back for food anymore as you get much better deals in this area (bigger portions, same price and better cooked too). I certainly will visit again – but just for drinks in the future.
R. M.
The Lass is my favourite pub in Manchester and considering the amount in the city that is saying something! It is a bit out of the way so I don't get there as often as I'd like, though. Beer prices are good, there's a good atmosphere even when it is fairly empty and there's a few different nooks and back rooms, and levels. It has nice "olde" pub decor (and the facade outside is a beaut!) mixed with 80s gaming and nostaligic geek stuff inside, it's great to get in here with a few friends and play some co-op Gauntlet or International Track and Field on the arcade cabinets.
S. G.
Great place for a nice pint. They change their selection on a regular basis so always something new to try. They also provide descriptions of the drink making it easy to identify which ones look best.
M. S.
Nice pub. Could be cleaner. But's got atmosphere.
G. W. L.
Nice (usually) quiet little pub, also has a good selection of food.
Some of the sofas are a little in need of repair, but nice cozy feel nonetheless.
K. N.
Lovely pub, always great customer service from the staff, super friendly. Food is fresh and made with love. Always a wide selection on the bar or beers / ales with rotating .
C. C.
Stunning pub, doesn’t look like much from the outside but once you get in its much different. Bright and spacious. Good range of beer and a lovely beer garden.
A. S.
Excellent pub! Good selection of drinks
U. S.
Beautiful historic pub, with the original green and brown colour scheme given an extra twist inside. The inside is marred by sports screens running at full volume, so the only place to sit is with the smokers on the small outside terrace.
A. S.
Lovely traditional pub with a great friendly atmosphere and very nice staff. Would recommend for the beer which is always changing. Plus they recognise CAMRA card for a small discount. Hard to fault.
J. P.
I haven't been in the Lass since it was done up earlier this year, but it was always one of the more rustic pubs to go to relatively close to the city centre. As well as having a selection of EU sanctioned foreign football channels there was a lot of character inside; from the quirky, odd-job wall decorations to the refurnished Pacman and other arcade games used as tables. I still need to see what it's like under new ownership but hopefully it's still got the same old vibe.
r.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and good beer selection.
D. K.
Small traditional pub in the city centre. Funky. Good place to take your younger in laws to. In a village it would be heaven, in the city crowded and noisy, but hey, I like a quiet life...
J. F.
A pub well worth visiting.
J. S.
Decent ales at a good price, especially for city centre, ( 3 Creme brulee stouts for under £11. Only stopped in on the way to the academy but would definitely visit again if in the area.
T. B.
Cozy place with a Nice outside patio over the canal.
L. L.
Lovely bar, looks great after the refurb, brilliant staff, good prices, lots of seats. Very friendly atmosphere and all-in-all a nice pub. Would recommend.
J. B.
Happy memories of being a student in Manchester
L. P.
Recently refurbished and with new owners. The venue seems to of lost some of it's character of the past but has been brought up to modern-day standards. Plenty of choice on drinks and reasonably priced.
V. P.
My favourite pub in Manchester. It has great atmosphere and nice view of the canal! So cozy!
The staff are good as well.
T. S.
A cosy pub with a good real ale selection and not too far from the centre of town. Gets busy on some evenings but you can normally find a seat. Definitely give it a try!
C. K.
A true old man's pub with all sorts of crowds though. Good selection of beers and food. Needs air vent i would say. Friendly service
A. L.
Lovely old fashioned pub with lots of the original fittings. Great selection of beers and you can even buy 3 this off a pint glasses so you can try 3 beers in one go. Recommended.
A. L.
Excellent pub with a good selection of beer, really nice atmosphere, and a great outdoor seating area. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it.
J.
Brilliant pub and has some great drinks
R. A.
The Lass O'gowrie is a pub with charm and character. They serve cask ale which regularly change, and are associated with CAMRA. My favourite beer they have is the beartown crème bearle stout, a crème brulé flavoured beer believe it or not.
Outside is a sheltered decking with serval tables and chairs that overlooks the canal. Games are available to play such as scrabble. It is a sociable pub and attracts a mixed but decent crowd
A.
Good atmosphere, beer garden which is always a plus, fairly decent priced beer but a good selection.
Even get a few cheeky piano tunes when someone's up to it/drunk enough
D. C.
Good atmosphere, good beer. Apparently they couldn't find a plasterer though. That apart it's a nice pub in which to while away an evening.
S. D.
The Lass has a great selection of beers and was one of the best pubs in Manchester for a relax after work.
It also offers a great place to watch sport, in particular the 6 nations rugby.
P. E.
The Lass O'Gowrie has loads of character, good range of real ales and spirits and a welcoming environment. Prices are reasonable too. Thursday night there's a general knowledge quiz, not too serious everyone has a chance
G. C.
Great little bar with nice terrace area outside. Good prices, good vibes.
A. B.
Always a struggle to find seats for the quiz as it's quite small but otherwise a great pub and the weekly Thursday quiz hosted by Giles is unique, bizarre but fun 🥳🍺
D. R.
Great pub. Always has been, always will be.
R. R.
Really nice traditional pub. Good selection of beers
D. I.
Great place for a decent pint. Limited food (only snack) options but the staff were friendly and the cask ales were good.
D. “.
Good beer, nice atmosphere can get very busy and very hot. A deffo for a afternoon session. Good hand pump selection and some ok craft lagers
J. D.
Good place for ales. Several really nice beers on tap, well kept. Nice cosy pub atmosphere. Not too expensive.
P. N.
Great pub with good beers!
J. B.
Great place to relax after work and delicious Sunday Roast. Even do breakfast during the week, which is just what I needed.
Staff pleasant and happy. Good atmosphere and great ales x
M. H.
Been going here for thirty years. Great pub, good choice of ale. Essential visit for pre gig drinks if your going to the Academy.
C. T.
Great music and ambience, just a little crowded during my visit
D. W.
Excellent atmosphere and a good beer selection. Not like a normal generic Greene King owned pub.
P. H.
Lovely old pub good food really term time only and really good staff very clean and well kept.
A good selection of beers all cask marked
A. P.
Proper pub, with good lager for me and plenty of proper ale for the "more discerning" pallet. Didn't eat there but the food looked decent as well.
R. H.
Old style pub with historical surroundings with a great selection of beer's and spirit's. Bit pricey on some sadly but got to go at least once.
J. S.
Great interior to the pub. Tradition yet modern feel. Real ales and many more options at the bar. Not too much money for the location.
G. W.
The plan e is nicer looking now its been taken over but the beers are all from the Greene King portfolio so it's not as good as it used to be. There are other places near by for better beer.
T.
Excellent choice of beers at very good prices. Warm and inviting interior too. Top notch pub.
M. S.
Good traditional pub with a decent choice of beers. They serve basic pub food. My friends both had pizza and enjoyed them.
M. K.
Not the nicest pub in terms of interior but fantastic ales, changing every week. Pizza is also pretty good and the staff are extremely friendly.
M. C.
Sometimes no where to sit but hey that's great for independent pubs. Great atmosphere. Good range of beers
R. L.
Great old pub. Great atmosphere. Great beer
B. L.
Great atmosphere, even better selection of real ales , a very cosy place and one of my favourite watering holes in Manchester
D. H.
Lovely place, decent beer selection and a quaint smoking area over the canal. Pizzas were tasty. Would recommend.
C. T.
Really nice pub, lots of selections of drinks and the food is ok (if be it a little small portioned for the price).
K. D.
Great pub with big selection of ales. Friendly and helpful bar staff with a lovely atmosphere
G. B.
Great pub . Good location. Cold beer!
M. C.
Great pub, lovely staff, don't brew their own beer anymore, but still great
N. W.
Very nice pub serving very nice ale.
L. d.
top notch pub. Strong pour, friendly service, good crowd, great soundtrack. Chicken tikka pizza was quite unexpectedly excellent!
G. “. M.
Great atmosphere friendly staff, good beer and lovely simple pub grub food menu.
D. H.
Got a nice table here, not enough lager choice but the lads serving us were lovely
M. E.
Always a nice pub but the wine is not great. Good selection of ales for those that like them that drink it.
D. S.
Great choice of beer and a lovely pizza at lunchtime. I left my scarf behind and once I'd called them to say I'd lost it they kept it behind the bar for me to collect the next day...fabulous service 😀
K. S.
