Reviews of Lower Turks Head
J. M.
One of the best pubs in Manchester, really lovely interior. Great feel to it, staff are always amazing and the beer on offer is great. Nice place to catch up with friends and watch some football.
J. J.
A great place to sit down and have a drink, staff are very friendly and the bar has a good atmosphere.
Additionally since the pub is located close to the bus station, this is a nice place to wait for your bus to arrive.
M. U.
Haven't been in the Lower Turks Head for quite some time, but was pleasantly refreshed and found good service and it's usual fantastic choice of Joseph Holts beers/ales. Probably quite overlooked and definitely understated. Well worth a visit!
J. M.
Stopped here for 1 night very welcoming staff a young lad showed us to our room we paid a little extra for a room with a balcony the veiw isnt the best but ideal if your a smoker there is some extraction units which can be noisey but slept all the way through so if you dont like noise i wouldnt recommend
Overall the bed was very comfy the room smelt clean and was clean will stay again 👍🏻
J. P.
Great city centre, traditional pub. Joseph Holt's beers, good atmosphere.
M. M.
Not from the area, first time visitor. Staff & locals really friendly, nice environment, decent music and drinks very reasonably priced compared to other places in this area.
Asked if they sold cigarette papers (I ran out), they did not but the excellent bartender offered to give me some from her own supply. Small acts like this make me feel welcomed, valued and want to return. Thank you.
J.
One of my favourite pubs in the City Centre of Manchester with more character than Coronation Street.
Now a Holts pub since the last time I was in but who doesn't love a pint of Diamond?
A must for any visit to Manchester whether shopping or just having a drink.
b. h.
Beautiful decor. Great atmosphere and good variety of beers . Northern soul nights very knowledgeable and polite friendly staff xx
R. c.
Many happy times spent there, met and made many lovely friends. Will be looking forward to seeing them all again when the great soul music 🎶 is back where it belongs.
V. B.
Go here before footy matches in Manchester. It's a lot quieter than it used to be, could be because they don't sell Guinness anymore. Good music though.
M. P. P.
Proper public house great selection of ales and lagers, reasonably priced even though being very busy the staff and the locals were friendly even though we were the out of townies definitely worth the visit and if ever in the vicinity will definitely call in again. Give it a go you won't be disappointed.
D. P.
Great old school manchester pub with an eclectic mix of people from all walks of life.
R. P.
Lovely place with nice atmosphere and polite, approachable staff.
During my visit I came with a group of friends and the staff was instantly very friendly and accommodating.
Overall I'd deffinely recomend this place for its great customer service.
J. H.
Nice clean pub with a couple of tables outside. Called for a cheeky beer after a morning of holiday shopping.
S. C.
To be honest doesn't look much from the outside but nice an clean inside, good drinks and very friendly staff
G. B.
Friendly staff serving great beer in very comfortable surroundings with an excellent atmosphere.
Really handy for the bus and tram interchange just across the road and only 5 minute walk from Victoria Station. Plenty of other pubs, bars and eateries within walking distance.
T. H.
A Great pub to call in for a couple of beers. It can get very busy weekend afternoon's but the waiting time isn't too long to served. Also a roof top garden & good seating upstairs.
j. K.
Good Pub,now run by Holt's. Can get crowded at peak times but enjoyable atmosphere and a good pint!
S. B.
Love this pub, it looks small from the outside but it is bigger when inside. Staff are friendly and helpful.
P. W.
1st time there..what a lovely sociable place..every floor in this place is warm and traditional like your local pub..dan and assistant katie plus all staff are so welcoming and friendly...outside areas are in sunny positions too what a bonus for Manchester...cant wait to return

Last came to this place about 45 years ago and it was falling down .one of the last bastions of the reporters and editors of the newspaper world..after hours locking till the first edition...hey its much better now.
C. T.
One of the remaining traditional pubs in the locality, a familiar feature from before the redevelopment of Withy Grove. Now has been extended to include 'Scuttlers', a bar named after one of the old Manchester gangs, from the 'Peaky blinders' era apparently. Good pub, good atmosphere.
A. J.
Lovely pub. Really nice inside and some great beers.
A. D.
Pleasant bar staff and a good selection of Sam Smith Ales, Lager and stout
Very clean
J. E. W.
Good prices, nice staff and the furniture and decor is really nice and traditional, lots of wood and leather, two floors.
C. S.
One of Manchester's oldest pubs. Renovated and now managed by Joseph Holt's brewery. Good selection of beer. Very reasonable prices for a city centre pub. Traditional feel with a smart interior.
N. H.

Very typical pub with old barber seats in front of the bar. A true Manchester bar!
A. T.
Amazing staff brilliant atmosphere, a great around pub 10/10 for us
Y. M.
A good pub with a great selection of craft beers. Different options for setting range from comfy booths to bar stools around tall tables.
R. D.
Great pub, doesn't seem to have achieved the heights it hit prior to the pandemic. But it is getting there.
J. W.
Now a Holts owned pub but still a staple pub in Manchester. Lovely premises and nice friendly staff. Cheap beer. What's not to love.
d. j.
Beautiful pub, even though it was rammed, typical Manchester weather and Christmas Market on , my friends and I were each served with happy faces from the staff and very quickly and efficiently.
C. J.
Lovely old pub really friendly staff and a good pint.
j. b.
Still a great pub with superb beer but what a shame about the sum terrace used to be a special place e to go but now useless with the new building at the the side

G. M.
Nice ale in here, fast friendly staff.
A. W.
Totally what you expect from a chain pub. If you're okay with that then you're good. Can't fault it
D. C.
Now Holts have taken over this pub it has been transformed into a great venue. It's much clearer with a great range of beers
C. B.
Lovely friendly traditional pub in the city centre.

So good to see this fine old pub being given a new lease if life.
Excellent service all day, and brilliant Joe Holt bitter. A pleasant surrounding, with a mixed age group.
R. S.
Only stated in a room for one nite ; never tried the pub
p. a.

A very decent pub just across the road from Shudehill tram and bus interchange.
A. H.
Visited here Saturday and what a great find. Managed to get a seat at the back of the pub which was good. Good selection of beers, really friendly and helpful staff. Toilets big inside and clean. Big bonus. There were 12 of us thus day and all liked the pub and stayed for a second. Customers friendly too as I got chatting to a few. Would definitely be coming back here.
J. N.
Hotel friendly staff and clean, comfortable basic accommodation - was just a bit worried when I spotted this light fitting hanging half off its mount and when I tried to push it back into position as I was worried about it falling off and hitting me in the night, it ended up falling straight to the floor
B. H.
Fantastic pub, just renovated by Holts and looking better than ever. Quality range of beers, plenty of room inside, management and staff all great
P. R.
Awsum great atmosphere fantastic well kept beers friendly staff too
C. L.
Half decent pint food average bit pricey
R. o.
a gem of a place ,, the staff are amazing, genuinely seem to be happy to help. the selection of gins available also made my visit pleasurable.

H. D.
Great pub, now even better as its been taken over by Joey Holts
L. G.
Nice bar. Very compact and gets very busy. Has good Tv's and plenty of sports on them. It's split level and the is a small bar on the first floor as well as a too terrace. It's finished to a high standard good choice of beers, staff friendly. Will always drop in here if I'm nearby when out.
D.
Lovely place, but very busy at weekend but still enjoyed ourselves
R. B.
Overall good value for money in a central location. The room was big and quite clean. The pub downstairs is nice and has a good range of drinks. Despite some raucous people there our room was quiet. The shower was disappointing: not much pressure and stone cold! Otherwise pleased.
c. p.
Brilliant place to chillout staff are excellent.
A. H.
Good pub, decent beer and great, helpful staff
B. b.
Lovely old pub full of history. Only 1 draught cider though...used to have more choice before it became Holts
O.
Great place,Great staff only minus is tad dear compared to my Holts local
J. L.
Tasty stout but bloody expensive. Guinness and an old mout... £9.20!!
N. L.
This is a really excellent city centre public house. It is multi-roomed and has been saved by Holt's Brewery following the previous business I assume not surviving covid?
Friendly staff & atmosphere, plenty of seating and the full range of cask & keg beers!
K. L.
Great little pub great staff beer was good and great atmosphere in the place loved it wells we was in today
A. M.
Always go here when we go into Manchester.lovely pub great atmosphere and lovely staff
L. M.
Love the atmosphere in this place. Good staff roof garden live music got it all
H. M.
Bit expensive for wine especially for a holts pub
J. N.
Cheap haha. No it was alright you know. There was a group of us and we were giddy, we got left alone so perfect 😘 good times.
s. k.
Nise beer decent prices for the centre of Manchester
S. B.
Good little bar just a shame it's a Holt's brewery Holt's beer is like dish water people want Stella ,Carling, peroni not that Holt's rubbish
p. f.
Great beer, great atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff
R. T.
Great traditional pub
G. H.
Holts pub but in town so expect to pay more
W. G. (.
Good English style pub. Large range of beers and lagers. Upstairs bar and seating and small roof garden. Friendly staff and reasonable price beers. Also has rooms available which are reportedly very nice.
R. M.
Great pub been took over by holts so only there beer being sold now
C.
Very nice pub with good beer selection and prizes. I love that there was football on as well as live music, however the music was waaaaaaay too loud. A couple of tables including us moved seats because we couldn't talk to each other and even then we had to scream.
G. C.
We called in on a busy December Friday night. There was standing room only at first but then we found some seats on the outdoor terrace. There was a good selection of beers. We had been before on a Friday afternoon when it was quieter. Nice pub though
C. D.
Called in for a break and a drink. Lovely pub. Traditional and well maintained. Toilets are clean and have an historical reference to the tiled floor and barbers shop that was here a long time ago. Check out the wonderful radiators. Brill. X
E. D.
Great pub, friendly locals and DJ's spinning Northern Soul at the weekends.
M. S.
Over 40 years have passed since I visited this old spit and sawdust pub.
Great to see the outside hasn't changed but the inside is unrecognisable. However, the place has been beautifully refurbished. Very comfortable with good choice of beers and a buzzing atmosphere.
Most enjoyable !
S. D.
Turning into our first stop when going for a drink in town. A very nice little boozer though the car does get very busy at times. A good selection of beers too and extra seating upstairs means it's worth visiting even if the bar is busy
L. F.
has a really cool rooftop seating area with a tv and heaters. also has a canopy roof that retracts so your covered if it rains. I didnt sit anywhere else but down stairs looked like it had some cool seating. Beers was good price for the centre and its right opposite bus stations and around lots of bars. I like this place a lot on a sunny day but can sometimes be a bit busy an the rooftop is only small.
I. C.
This pub is historic in Manchester, its a must visit place to unwind & enjoy a pint or three.
J. C.
This pub is situated right next to the bus station and the shudehill tram stop, making it ideal for a quick drink while you wait.
Although it always seems busy, I have never had an issue getting seat, unless you're talking about the cool terrace beer garden on the first floor. That always seems to be full in he summer.
As it is in the south most edge of the Northern Quarter (really probably not in it all) it is a little expensive, bit nothing out of the ordinary. You have all the usual suspects of drinks available.
It seems clean and and the staff always seen to be clearing away the empty glasses.
The decorations has an old Victorian feel to it, really quite cosy.
Overall, definitely worth a visit.
C. D.
Good price accommodation. Great location. Clean and new bedroom. Very helpful staff. Bathroom was a bit rough around the edges. The room even had a balcony! Nice pub underneath too.
P. R.
Amazing place bit noisy with the traffic but I sleep well anyway. The room was spotless and very clean the staff were all brilliant when ever we had a problem the only problem we did have was no air con or a fan the room I was overly hot and clammy the price was spot on aswel so I would highly recommend it the only thing I would say you need a fan on the room and then could shut the window and you won't hear the traffic but overall 10/10 this place will definitely be staying here again
A. C.
Very very busy and cramped. Advertised Northern Soul night but DJ played bad disco all night. If your passing by drop in for a pint but not a destination pub. Didn't eat but couple tables had burgers etc. Nice smoking area.
R. M.
Great pub but usually very busy on match days. Lots going on and a great atmosphere, with lots of screens around showing the football. Outside balcony is a hidden treat when it's warm.
B. G.
This pub has loads of character and a wide selection of drinks. Every time I've been its absolutely rammed downstairs but there was some space upstairs and out on the terrace. They did start running out of things to choose towards the later evening on a Friday night.
A. B.
Great pub nice surroundings
R. B.
Top place for a great pint
A. J.
Good selection of beers (including a few gluten free ones!) and a load of space to sit. Chatty bar staff. The place was a bit grubby but traditional; would go again!
K. D.
Reopened about a year or so ago after a long period of closure this pub has been done up to a good standard and has decent real ale. Every time I've been in, it has been crowded although I have found seats at the back.
P. H.
Fantastic pub , had the best night. If you love music and dance, Northern Soul, Motown, funk, ska. Reggae this is the place to go on a Sunday afternoon/evening
S. F.
Nicely renovated pub, decent prices, well worth a visit
M. S.
Tradition English pub, warm friendly atmosphere with a mixture of all ages. Good selection of draft and bottled beers ciders. In the city centre and easy to get to.
M. F.
Very good pub!
And the twin room is amazing for a budget stay
M. K.
Really nice old fashioned Manchester Pub on the edge of tge Northern Quarter, close to lots of other bars and restaurants. A couple of cozy rooms downstairs and a great upstairs space too. They do show football games on tgeir screens but it's not the focal point of the bar. A great place for an evening meet up, or to sit and read in the afternoons. Good range of drinks and ales.
P. S.
A great bar in the Shudehill area of Manchester, comfortable great staff and a fabulous selection of beers and lagers, also has a roof top drinking area which is great in the summer months. The bar has a very relaxed chilled out feel a really great place to drink.
R. D.
Good drinks selection, nice surroundings. Unfortunately the bar staff were too busy discussing what had happened at the weekend rather than serving customers. I had to repeat my drinks order 5 times, the last time the barmaid asked me what I wanted again, the guy stood next to me told her what my drinks order was.
D. C.
Cracking bar, nice and busy but not too packed. Good selection of beers with good staff.
To be honest by the time we got there we were a little bit squiffy, but I'm sure in the light of day my review would still be good.
S. M.
One of my favourite pubs in Manc. Stumbled across it before a Crolla fight one night and had a right good crack with the locals. They had the football on and playing good indie music. Busy on Saturday nights. But very good pub.
P. B.
Not bad for a Holt's pub
J. S.
Great pub great staff & location.
R. T.
Good beer and shows most live sports on their screens. Also has a small roof terrace which is a real sun trap. Really convenient stop off for tram, train or bus.
However it's 1 of the busiest pubs in Manchester so can get overcrowded at weekends.
J. R.
Great pub with fantastic menu and drinks. Ordered cheese pie, delivered to our table by the chef who clearly takes pride in his food. Good ambience.
P.
Always a good place to start, end, or stay for a whole night. Plenty of real ales, alongside lagers, etc. Lots of seats, sports TV in certain areas, but you can find a quiet spot. Friendly, attentive staff.
T. P.
Good atmosphere for a week day
K. E.
We were on a stag do in Manchester and this was one of the many pubs that we visited during the day. Pleasant pub with plenty of space with a first and a ground floor. We visited on the May bank holiday weekend and it was very busy which was unfortunate and there was people everywhere and the pub was rammed. Still had a good visit to The Lower Turks Head though.
C. T.
My favourite Joseph Holt pub
J. B.
Can be a bit salmon pink polo shirt, if you catch my meaning, and the beer selection is the standard fare, but the upstairs seating is great for a quiet drink and the "hidden" beer garden is a great suntrap for an evening pint.
P. M.
Really good pub; used to visit pretty often at the end of the week.
Decent ales, nice decor and friendly staff. Not what I initially expected given the location but it's really nice.
Z. E. B.
Popped into this pub near Shudehill tram stop on the edge of the Norther Quarter for Manchester Silicon Drinkabout event last night.
Pub benefits from the charm of a traditional boozer but also has a cosmopolitan feel. Great venue for a social with very friendly bar staff.
P. B.
Only nipped in to use the gents but looked good and had a friendly vibe.
J. D.
the space was very neat and had a great aesthetic. the rooftop bar was great to enjoy the bits of sunshine. drinks were good and the staff was very nice and helpful!
p. l.
Great drinks reasonable prices
J. A.
Busy city centre pub, a fair selection of beers over two floors with a nice little outdoor area upstairs, serving a small menu of snacks and meals. Sky tv on several screens, mainly sports.
T. B.
From the outside it doesn't look like a hotel. But the hotel is above the pub. We were nicely welcomed and helped very well.
We booked the room with bathroom and it was very clean. We only stayed there for 1 night and that was perfect for that. There is only no breakfast and diner. But everything for that is near the hotel.
J. M.
Great pub with good selection of beers.
J. G.
A much improved pub. Clean and tidy with good quality Stella. There are some good tunes playing. I went to watch football and there are plenty of screens where it can be viewed.
v. s.
Traditional looking pub from the outside with narrow frontage but inside it's like the Tardis with quirky seating on different levels. As a Manc who now lives at the other end of the country this is always on my list of places to go when I'm in Manchester
G. D.
Very unique pub in the centre of Manchester next to the bus station and not far from the rail network. The pub is cosy and has very using seating areas near the bar and lots of room over the two Floors
M. T.
Good enough for a beer on a crawl.
P. S.
What a really nice traditional pub.service excellent.the staff are a credit to the place. Good choice of food and drink.once in there you wont want to leave.would recommend a visit if you are ever in the area.
T. K.
Great pub, real mancunian boozer and cheap as well 👍
C. C.
Good selection of real ales at a very reasonable price for the City centre. Handy meeting place for a visit into town due to local transport links. Sky Sports on big screen. Will visit again.
J. M. M.
Great boozer, loads of space/seating upstairs and a small beer garden. Staff are friendly and there is a really good selection of ales. Beer tastes clean.
D. W.
Expensive for Holts,no problems with staff and customers, relaxing
D. M.
Called in on a Sunday, best boozer in Manc, the northern soul session with a DJ who really knows his stuff,Steve McCarthy knocking out some fabulous tunes,if I had more Sundays off this is where you would find me.Thanks for a great afternoon.
R. T.
Always a very welcome pub with fantastic alcohol, seating, smoking area and gorgeous staff. A staple for my Manchester visits. A real hidden gem!
10/10 goooooooo!!!!
S. A. R.
Really cheap hotel, good location & clean. Really friendly staff also. I was staying in the hottest room in the entire world in there! I think they knew how hot it was as they had a fan in the room. If there's anything on in town & I need a cheap room for the night....this place will be my port of call.
F. R. W.
Excellent pub that has reopened. A veritable TARDIS with room on the second floor and a corridor into the smaller 'Scuttlers' next door. Can get busy as it is on the edge of the trendy Northern Quater but worth a visit to this historic pub.
R. 4. T.
Old Manchester pub at moment not serving food
J. D.
If i could give it 6 stars, I would. Nice beer and serious pashun all round
S. B.
A busy city centre bar in Manchester comprising a split level drinking establishment with a pub (The Lower Turks Head and wine bar (Scuttlers). Small in comparison to larger drinking pubs and bars but very popular. There is a terraced area upstairs which is very pleasant. The Lower Turks Head is directly opposite the Shudehill bus station and metro tram stop, so easily accessible from various areas of Greater Manchester. Uncertain whether food is served. Overall, a good place to visit.
P. m.
What a great little place, spot on pub.the staff were super helpful and polite.
Our room was, clean, the bed was comfortable. Would highly recommend this hotel. Great value for money...
S. G.
Really clean and pleasant room, comfy beds and kind staff. I stayed for just one night for business and will definetely be my go-to hotel for future business trips as its so cheap and right next to the main bus station. Its location is a double-edged sword as it is very accessible and convenient, but the noise can be a bit adgitating for light sleepers- however the room comes with earplugs at your disposal so it seems that the Lower Turks Head has taken its criticism into account and tried its best to make the stay as pleasant as possible for its customers- i applaud their efforts and highly recommend.
L. J.
Great for after work drinks. Got a sun trap beer garden. Good selection of real ales and wines. Gets really busy on a Friday and Saturday night
P. C.
Always a good pub, even better now it's Holts.
T. W.
Very cosy and friendly atmosphere
K. G.
Now a holts pub but still good
D.
A popular city centre venue with multiple screens for watching sport. Bigger than you think inside as it has upstairs seating. Various beers- good selection.
J. C.
Nice atmosphere. Plenty of staff on a Friday night so getting to the bar was never a problem. Great town pub
s. t.
Cosy pub
A. C.
I got a single room with en suite and no windows (as advertized). The room is extremely small only having the bed, a small table for tea /coffee making and space on one side to walk around it. No wardrobe or any piece of furniture to put your clothes. The bathroom is ok.
The room is really hot and I doubt anyone can stay in it during got weather (is October now so it's close to ok).
Overall for the price it's ok but I doubt I will use this place again.
C. W.
Nice pub great pint definitely go back
B. M.
2 pubs in 1, this joined up pub looks and feels like it has been in Manchester forever. That doesn't mean that it lives in the past. The Lower Turks Head/Scuttlers still gets rowdy on a Friday and Saturday evening. It is unashamedly down to earth so don't be getting any ideas about a fancy cocktail, instead, set up a tab, take a seat or rest an elbow on the bar and get on it.
m. s.
Arrived late on a weds night, just had time For drink. Good quality lager, reasonably priced. Nice atmosphere, good music.
A. L.
Good traditional pub. Timmy Taylor's available. Recommended.
PS If you pay by card it's a minimum spend of £5.
R. H.
Nice beer, good service. Sun terrace catches the sun nicely but only has room for about 3 people. My advice - early lunch.
A. D.
Been renovated recently which has given it a great new vibe. Its kept a lot of it historic value but brought in a modern twist. Great selection of ales and a great atmosphere
E. E.
Excl pub. V clean. Good staff.
J. B.
The best hidden beer garden. Very chilled and great for hiding away from all the cars. The bartender was friendly and welcoming. Definately coming back.
M. M.
We were killing time before getting the tram home. We ordered two pints of Trooper and sat down. After a few sips of the beer, we realised that it hadn't been looked after very well, so we left two pints with 2/3rd of then beer and left. Previous visits have been OK, so putting it down to just bad luck.
d.
Nice pub close to city centre , rooms available and a good selection of beers
Unfortunately no longer selling food
But overall a good pub
A. B.
Great place with a great atmosphere great selection of beers and a small but very relaxing sun roof if your lucky with the weather
M. S.
Lovely traditional style pub with good selection of drinks including guest ales. Plenty of seating areas both up and downstairs.
P. a.
Good pub
S. C.
Really nice pub situated right across the road from Shudehill bus station easy to find by bus and tram and next to the northern quarter good staff Coors £3.50 toilets clean pub was busy as it was a take that concert at the arena.
C. B.
Really pleasant pub, nice atmosphere on a Friday evening and friendly staff. So many nice areas to sit and chat, it's a lovely and cosy environment.
M. G.
Great pub great decor, like a pub should be. Had to leave a star off though as the beer (Pendle Witch) had a slightly off aftertaste. Probably not the pub's fault though.
J. H.
A good place for after work drinks. Has a nice little beer garden upstairs and it isn't generally overcrowded so easy to relax in.
m. g.
Top pub
g. l.
Great pub with great beers, and very close to all the public transport hubs. Can get very busy if there's sports on tv though.

Don't get a room that doesn't have window, especially in summers. You'll be grilled.
Overall, room was neat and clean. And provided all the facilities that were promised.
B. D.
Great city pub with good facilities and an enjoyable atmosphere. Convenient upstairs bar and balcony area add to the experience

Cracking bar, nice and busy but not too packed. Good selection of beers with good staff. …
B. G.
This pub has loads of character and a wide selection of drinks. Every time I've been its absolutely rammed downstairs but there was some space upstairs and out on the terrace. They did start running out of things to choose towards the later evening on a Friday night.
A. C.
Very very busy and cramped. Advertised Northern Soul night but DJ played bad disco all night. If your passing by drop in for a pint but not a destination pub. Didn't eat but couple tables had burgers etc. Nice smoking area.
B. M.
2 pubs in 1, this joined up pub looks and feels like it has been in Manchester forever. That doesn't mean that it lives in the past. The Lower Turks Head/Scuttlers still gets rowdy on a Friday and Saturday evening. It is unashamedly down to …
K. D.
Reopened about a year or so ago after a long period of closure this pub has been done up to a good standard and has decent real ale. Every time I've been in, it has been crowded although I have found seats at the back.
Y. S.

Why don't you accept contactless payments when your card machines allow it? Not bad for a pub in the city centre but a bit pricy. Toilets not great.
