What a day this was! I booked this experience with friends and was thrilled that I did. Upon arrival our host, Jack, was welcoming and friendly. We started with champagne and continued from there on a journey through palate education and food pairing discussions. The range of wines suited all budgets and Jack was thrilled to chat about our own wine experiences and answer any questions.
Jack was so experienced and worked hard to keep connected to all 20 in the room. The food was lovely and was matched well to the wines.
As a host, Jack was superb. He relaxed everyone and ran the experience brilliantly. Thank you for a great day.

Jack was an absolutely fantastic host. He was very knowledgable, friendly and generous with the wine. He even listened to our stupid question ‘what do you do if you warmed your red wine in the oven for too long?’ Highly recommend

For Level 1 I found John’s support invaluable - big or little questions he was very prompt and helpful.
At level 2 it was the online resources that were particularly useful and a great help during revision. Off line support is very helpful and very quick response.

Went to a wine and cheese tasting in Manchester on Friday night - loved it! Really good evening: John really knows his stuff. All that knowledge makes the wine taste even better. It's not a lecture, John chats through the wine you're about to try and then leaves you to discover and chat about each one. Lovely people on our table too - made for a great night out. Definitely do this!

Great instructors: very friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. Distance learning managed very well and in a professional manner. Definately recommend!

Excellent afternoon at the Malmaison with Northern Wine school. Jack was a great guide through some amazing wines and the food was great. Totally unpretentious…definitely recommend.

I attended a virtual Sake session last night: it was great. Samples were posted to me in advance - along with instructions for storage, serving etc - and then I logged in to Zoom to attend the session. We learned all about Sake: how it's made, where it's made, history etc - full of facts and anecdotes from John, who has been to Japan and visited lots of Sake places. We tried the samples chilled, at room temperature and warm to understand the differences to taste that serving makes. I really enjoyed it - will definitely be buying some Sake to share my newfound knowledge with my family and would definitely do an online session again. It was a lot of fun.

John and Jack have made the day so interesting with their experienced knowledge and kind persona. The 3 course meal along with the wine tasting has been an amazing experience for my fiancé’s 30th and I look forward to taking away the acquired knowledge in tasting more wines! John and Jack made the experience really enjoyable and personable, I would definitely consider more experiences with the northern wine school and would recommend this to friends and family, it was worth every penny!

I completed my WSET level 2 with Northern Wine School. Fantastic resources such as different practice tests and quizzes (there are absolutely loads of them, so felt very confident going into my exam!). John offers great support and is a brilliant communicator. I highly recommend!

My wife and I went on the 'Introduction to Manchester Wine Tasting' course. We both really enjoyed the evening. It was a very enjoyable and relaxed way to spend a couple of hours of an evening while drinking and sampling a range of lovely wines - and actually learning something about it all along the way! John clearly also really knew his stuff. The whole thing was good fun. Would recommend.

Brilliant event. We went for the British cheese and wine tasting. John was a fantastic host. The layout of the food and wines when we arrived felt really premium. The background to the wines and cheeses was interesting and John made us feel really welcome. There was also a little left over wine to enjoy after too! I'd do this again

We did the Whisky tasting and it was brilliant. John is incredibly knowledgeable, engaging, friendly and a great host. The whisky's chosen represented a good range of regions and styles, and all were affordable and available. We will definitely do more guided tastings with John, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I did the level 2 wines and spirits course recently. It was most enjoyable and I learned a lot during the 3 sessions. John is very knowledgeable about his wines and brings a great selection of wines to try and help one become an educated taster. The group was fun and we all had a great time tasting and discussing the wines with John keeping us right! The examination is not bad provided one reads the course material and the book we received as part of the course will serve as a useful reminder.

We had a great evening tasting french wines with John. He is extremely knowledgeable but also made the evening really fun. We learnt some really useful tips, which we're looking forward to putting into practice! The very generous cheese and meat platters were an unexpected bonus.
John doesn't sell wine himself, so there is no pressure to buy wine at the end of the evening (it's not an option!), and you can concentrate on learning and enjoying the wine!

I bought the Discovery course as a gift for my Dad but I also bought a ticket for myself - a complete newbie to wine.
The structure of the session was excellent, with a fun activity to start with and then the tasting to follow. It had a nice informal feel.
John was extremely knowledgeable and packed the session full of interesting facts and tips. He was perfect for a complete beginner or a seasoned wine drinker. He provided plenty of resources, some of which I wish I looked at more.
As a cheese lover, this was a perfect bridge to get into wine for me.
I thoroughly recommend this to anybody. I loved it!

Both me and my gf had an excellent time at the Northern Wine School tasting evening. It was one of the best xmas gift's we have received in a long time and I would recommend it as a gift (Or treat yourself) to anyone with an interest in wine. John was a great host with every drop of knowledge you could hope for, he even threw in a little smelling test quiz and teachings of how the taste system works. All very interesting stuff. The location is also excellent, situated in the listed Manchester Hall, a fitting place for a wine taste. Can't wait to go back for the wine and cheese night!

Had a lovely evening at the Gin tasting experience. Not only is John very informative on both the history of gin and flavourings, but he is also a very friendly and laid back presenter. I would recommend to anyone looking for gifts for gin lovers or just to have a different type of night out!

We'd booked with John at Northern Wine School for a steak dinner with wine tasting at a private room at the Malmaison for a stag. Room was excellent, food was good and lots of it - and John hosted the evening well. He gave us all a 'guess the wine' style game which saw us all try and identify country of origin, type, price etc of six different red wines; before revealing all and giving us some tips for next time. Great evening, everyone thoroughly enjoyed - would highly recommend.

My girlfriend and I attended a tasting at the Castlefield Hotel in Manchester. John was an excellent host over the course of the night as we tried to match smells to their source before tasting and learning about some very nice wine indeed. Recommended for a nice night out, without question.

Studied my WSET level 2 through Northern Wine School & it was great. Achieved a Diploma through the fantastic materials provided by Northern Wine School & constant support from John.

John conducted a gin tasting event at our New Years Charity event, this was a great experience and is now the 2nd event i have been on with John. A great host, highly knowledgeable and the ability to introduce us to gins we had not heard of before and even a few different types of mixer! Fab event, highly encourage anyone to attend one of them.

A fantastic evening of virtual wine tasting that struck a great balance between being informative and fun. All wines were sent out in advance along with instructions for storage and what we'd need for the evening. Highly recommended!

I did one of John’s gin tasting events. Tasting different interesting gins went without saying but I didn’t expect to have as much fun doing it! John explained things excellently and we all had great fun. I highly recommend his expertise!

I have completed the Level 2 Wines and Spirits course with The Northen Wine School. There are very few people offering the online course which is brilliant if you want to study on your own time. I chose the Northern Wine School as they were flexible on the exam dates. This allowed me to finish the course and then dedicate the necessary time to studying for the exam. The date of the exam was my choice and at a time of day which fitted well with my travelling. The course work is self explanatory but John answered any questions I had about any aspect as they came up. If you want to do an online course, I would highly recommend the Northern Wine School for its helpful advice, online resources and flexibility. Oh - and I passed!!

We really enjoyed the food and wine pairing evening. John is very knowledgeable but down to earth and doesn't mind silly questions about wine! The selection was varied and I discovered a new fondness for Riesling after tasting the special one at the evening with a blue cheese - delicious! Thanks so much.

Just been to the gin night, excellent. John was so informative and we had a fun night, 6 different gins and different mixers with nibbles.
We want to try wine night and whisky tasting next.
Would definitely recommend it

I was given a Cheese and Wine tasting experience for my Mothers' Day present and went with a friend on the 27th July. It was a fabulous evening as we learnt some basics of wine tasting, including about different grapes, climates and terroir and production methods. Then we tasted 6 wines matched with 6 different (and delicious) cheeses. John from Northern Wine School is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and created a relaxed and fun atmosphere. He was happy to go into more detail for those who were interested and to answer any questions. We met some lovely people and there was nothing pretentious about the evening. It was all about enjoyment. And I learnt lots! German Riesling and Garstang Blue cheese? Who would have thought that would work but it does! Sadly I can only eat Comté with Champagne now!! One tip: don't have a big meal beforehand; there's loads of cheese, bread and crackers to feast on! Wonderful experience, highly recommended. Thanks, John.

We went to the wine discovery evening as a birthday gift. The evening was great, John was very knowledgeable & presented in a way that was entertaining & non-condescending to us wine-novices. Would definitely recommend

Attended the Burn's Night Whisky Tasting Event with 3 Course Meal for my Father's 50th Birthday. The 6 different whisky's and Haggis led meal, combined with a thorough and entertaining history of Whisky and walkthrough of tasting made this a fantastic night. John was fantastic - I'm already looking at the Wine tasting. Thank you John!!

Great evening with John tasting French wines. Very well organised and while French wine isn't particularly my favourite, I learned so much about French wine itself and how to taste it. Also there was a lovely little platter of pate, processed meats and cheeses to go with it. Great value for money and I'll definitely be booking more of these. over the coming months.

I sat my WSET Level 2 in Spirits with John and I achieved 48/50 (a Distinction!). I definitely don't think I could have achieved this grade without his support. He is knowledgeable, passionate and down to earth. John was always on hand whenever i needed any questions answering.
Whether you're new to Wines & Spirits, or have been in the business a while, I would highly recommend sitting your qualification with him.

I attended the most enjoyable New Zealand wine tasting evening on 27 January, where we tasted and compared 6 white and 6 red wines produced by the Family of Twelve independent New Zealand producers, The wines were of excellent quality and the event was very well organised and presented by John Tallow.

Excellent evening (food and wine event, 23/2/17). Very informative presentation in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. You will discover some hidden gems (with no sales pitch!), and I would highly recommend NWS to anyone who is interested in learning about, or enjoys, wine.

Really exceeded expectations. John was knowledgeable and interesting and answered all questions without being elitist or assuming knowledge. His passion for wine is infectious- will 100% go back again for another evening.
