Reviews of THE BRITONS PROTECTION
M.
First drank here in 1974! Was a great Tetley pub with beers from Tetley Walker Warrington. ( Joshua Tetley Leeds was the better pint. Both breweries long gone.) The landlord was great and kept beers perfectly. He also had Lock Ins. ( Illegal after hour service.) The front bar would empty and move to the back rooms. Lights off in front and service through the hatch. You left (staggering) via the back yard gate. Been numerous times over the years and this is still one of the best pubs in Manchester. Had a lovely pint of Neptune Forecast. Long may this pub prosper.

Excellent pub just off the popular region of Deansgate. Huge Whiskey collection, and the pub has lots of seating, private rooms and a big log fire! Alan, the manager, has such an in-depth knowledge of Whiskey - so much so he hosts public and private tastings. Myself and 4 others, paid £25 a head and had a unpeated tour of Scotland. We tried 5 drams, with a bonus one provided at the end (which Alan produces). These tastings can be tailored to your likes and requirements and Alan’s knowledge and understanding of Whiskey is unmatched. You learn so much from him! Id highly recommended- excellent Mancunian boozer all round!
D. j.
Best pub in Manchester. Great, friendly staff and friendly locals. Even before a U*****d match it was nice.
S. R.
My partner and I did the whisky tasting with John this evening, cannot recommend enough! I am not personally a big whisky drinker but I enjoyed learning about all the personally selected whisky’s and learning everything about their origins, and found some whisky’s I liked myself! Highly recommended to everyone visiting Manchester!

The "BP" is a Manchester institution for fans of traditional pubs. Paid a lunchtime visit when it was fairly quiet. Sat in one of the back rooms, there is a garden/yard for those that like to sit outside. Had a couple of the Saltaire bitter which was very good & went down well with the cheese pie, thick cut chips & peas. There are several pie options some of which are unusual. Nice & quiet if you like a relaxing lunchtime.
Prominent position on Great Bridgwater street close to Manchester Central, Great Bridgewater Hall & Jurys Hotel. Recommended for fans of traditional pubs with plent of craft beer options not to mention large array of spirits
M. W.
Great pub old traditional beer garden at the back, snug rooms still kept the traditional look has character. Very friendly staff.
L. B.
One of my regular spots on my days off, Alan, John and all the stsff are fantastic. Absolutely huge whisky selection and the staff can guide you through pretty much every one of the selection. Beautifully decorated and an awesome place to chill out and have a chilled out time. Definitely on my most recommended list.
I. V.
Maybe done this before but lovely old fashioned put with wood and tile decor split into small rooms real ale and usual lager and spirits especially Jack daniels and special vintage and different barrels
S.
Class old pub with huge whiskey and bourbon selection. Has some nice casks on too, big seating area that is pretty. So mix of old inside but new modern outdoor area. Worth a visit
N. G.
Cosy pub with separate rooms/areas with an outdoor space available. Old-fashioned interior that's been well kept. Nice beer selection and tons of whiskies available. Friendly staff. Great local!
H. P.
Nice place for a few drinks with an awesome selection of whiskey. For me, not a place to spend an entire evening but definitely a good stopover
E. H.
Very nice old Manchester pub that apparently has a lot of different types of whiskey. Lovely staff and pleasant beer garden. It was late afternoon and not too busy!
B. L.
A fine and civilized establishment where the finest of Manchester gather for chit-chat and beer. The establishment has a detailed and interesting history. The establishment contains amazing staff members that are friendly and attentive. The establisment is my favourite pub in the fine town of Manchester <3 Live long and prosper!
A. P.
This is a fantastic pub. It has lots of original features, a range of hand pumped beers and too many Whiskies to count.
There was a problem with the WiFi so be sure you have cash to pay!
N.
Probably the best pub in Manchester and the finest selection of whisky in the north west of England. Welcoming and friendly staff too.
A place for drinking, talking and contemplating.
T. C.
Brilliant pub. Fantastic choice of beers.
Authentic in every way. Lots of bar space and places to sit.
Bags of character.
One of the best I've been in.
Glad we dropped in for a few.
J. G.
Love this place, got a huge selection of ever rotating whiskeys in stock and nice size beer garden in the back. Can't believe at this time the brewery want to take it back, its a historic part of manchester!
J. O.
Fantastic pub: beautiful building with amazing interior, several small seating areas all immaculately decorated, great welcome, excellent beers, delicious reasonably-priced food, relaxed atmosphere and the sound of enjoyment instead of blaring music.
f. H.
Fantastic pub with really knowledgeable bar staff and the best selection of whisky! Love the atmosphere in this pub
T. H.
If your looking for an traditional/historical pub this is definitely worth a visit. It's also excellent if you like a drop of whisky this place is right up there in the top league with hundreds to choose from. Very Friendly bar staff & customers alike. Great pub to call in to.
O. O.
Really enjoyed this pub, interesting layout and down to earth staff. Not too pricey either!
T. M.
Brilliant pub, doesn't need changing, great landlord, great staff, great range of products, no need to alter a winning formula
O.
I like this pub, feels a bit traditional. Great staff and decent enough beer garden
P. W.
Great pub
Traditional pub great service made to feel like a local
Highly recommended
K. W.
Excellent unspoilt pub. Very busy when we visited. Since becoming a Freehouse, prices seem higher than all of the 8 Manchester pubs we visited. Worth visiting though.
N. B.
This man has more knowledge than most. I spent over £100 in whiskey and each recommendation wanted me wanting more. Not to mention the class in service. He was fantastic.this bar is a real treat. Down to earth, complex, an utter treat
I can't wait for mu next visit. No bull...this is the place to go.
P. W.
What a great friendly bar. Very clean. Area of the Peterloo Massacre 1819
A. E.
Lovely old fashioned pub with a variety of rooms.
Many different types of beer, all well kept.
R. D.
Nice pub, called in for a couple of swift ales after work. Good beer in a nice traditional pub setting.
L. N. (.
Very attentive bar staff. Food was good. Good variety of beers.
D. T.
A great real pub, that hasn't been messed around with.
An excellent selection of ales and cosy: what a pub should be.
B.
Good pub with a lovely beer garden...but the ladies toilet door is worryingly sticky 😅
D. h.
Loved this pub, friendly staff, will go again next time I'm over this way
R. D.
A wonderful pub, a true icon from a bygone time. Sadly its existence is under threat
M. C.
Great beer - Independence!
Nice outside seating.
Proper Manchester pub
M. W.
Great traditional pub. Highly recommended
S. E.
A classy place with more history than a whole chain of cutlery related bargain boozers. This is Manchester, use it or lose it.
J. H.
Lovely Traditional pub quirky and old style, a must visit place.
s. k.
A very nice and traditional pub in Manchester where you can enjoy your drink. Cozy inside with fast and kind service.
R. M.
Very good real ale pub, great atmosphere and good location.
N. L.
Firstly this is an iconic Manchester pub with a massive history, slowly disappearing into a backdrop of high rise buildings!
On the night visited roaring fire in backroom very warm & cosy!
My only niggle was the lack of cask beers available. Too many pump clips turned around so little choice which is a shame because this pub has a reputation for cask beers. I hope this was just a one off?
Time will tell!
N. u.
Lovely pub with beer garden. Has got history and a good selection of drinks and huge selection of whiskeys.
P. F.
Still one of if not the best pubs in Manchester City Centre, good selection of beers, whisky.
K. R.
First visit in several years, still a good pub.
T. B.
Fantastic old historic pub,great ale,warm welcome,well worth a visit
c.
A labyrinth of corners to enjoy a drink served by friendly staff
C. M.
Good traditional old English pub, friendly staff, good service, real homely feel not like boozer nowadays that are soulless, close to bridgewater theatre and Manchester Central arena (across the road)
s. H.
Great old pub with a great range of drinks
s. m.
Lovely pub stunning spirits selection and well kept ale
S. V.
This is a whiskey bar, but your can find some local brews too. History is what got me there, beer is what kept me there.
J. F.
Superb and beautiful pub of great character. Known for it's whisky choice.
С. Д.
Marvelous traditional pub. Has two additional rooms at the back. Recommend!
a. a.
Limited menu in Orangery and q choice for dessert left or pay £3,30 for cheese board. After complaining. Cheese board given complimentary
L. M.
Great historic pub. Great choice of lagers, ales and spirits. Friendly staff. Typical city centre prices
m. s.
Proper traditional pub. Friendly staff
G. D.
Great pub for real ale lovers. A proper pub and would recommend a visit.
S. g.
Great beer and good atmosphere, shame the loos aren't up to the same standard as the beer.
C. B.
A great, old-fashioned pub that has a great atmosphere, great beer and must be visited.
S. G.
Wonderfully beautiful pub with a few cask ales and 300 whiskeys. I recommend a pint and just walking round taking in the history.
P. T.
Great pub. Very busy when I visited. Needs more staff.
j. b.
What a brilliant time really friendly staff would highly recommend
M. N.
We stopped by after a long walk around Manchester. Even though the kitchen was closed the bartender made us a special meal . Great service! We also met some wondearful friendly locals
S. G.
Great traditional boozer. Good atmosphere, but toilets are not good
S. B.
Great oldie whiskey pub👍. Pickle egg if ya like...
C. H.
This is such an awesome classic pub! Super cosy! Highly recommend!
C. H.
A pub of pubs. Great beers and traditional surroundings in modern Manchester
b. j.
If you like whisky this is the place to go in Manchester. Extremely knowledgeable staff with loads of recommendations, great atmosphere, beer garden and history. Have never been here and not had a great time.
P. W.
Real old Manchester pub. Excellent range of beers.
m.
Great selection of whisk(e)y and knowledgeable bar staff. Good pies too.
P. T.
I worry for the future of this pub as the lease is about to expire some time soon and if taken over its future despite its Grade 1 listing will be of concern. It is a heritage pub that should not be allowed to change. Still a favourite.
M. B.
Interesting water hole. First pint was off but they were happy to change it, no issue. Choice of real ales is always good. Steeped in history, a must visit pub in Manchester
J. M.
Such a great place. An oasis of the distant past in the middle of the new.
Great beer garden too!
M. W.
£4.20 for cask, so not cheap. One of the best pubs in Manchester. A must for pub aficionados. Good service and well kept ales. I recommend this pub.
n. g.
Great selection of different whiskey and craft ales
L. F.
Super gin and tonic, lovely old pub vibe
D. B.
Nice place a traditional pub with good handpull ales. Unfortunately I was there match day afternoon when united were playing at home. Hectic doesn't describe it but the bar staff performed brilliantly.
J. H.
Great old school pub with a great selection of drinks - particularly single malt whisky, if you're into that. Staff are very friendly, and the atmosphere in the beer garden is great.
P. G.
Always a favourite. Wonderful interior and a good selection of beers ,spirits etc. Highly recommended visit if you don't know if. Atmosphere was a bit down due to Covid restrictions, don't let that stop you. Pubs deserve and need our support.
g. t.
Nice ale traditional pub vibe 👍 🍻
S. T.
Oh it was so nice to be in the pub, with precautions, after such a long time not able to go. Shared an excellent stout with a wonderful friend, and the staff were helpful and friendly.
t. d. d.
Nice hidden beer garden, gets the sunshine too
E. L.
Fab selection of whiskies! So good to be in an ORIGINAL Manchester pub! Its being within the walls of a bit of history. Full of character.
E. S. _.
Just amazing. Ok, not in trend in the northern quarter, but one of the all time great pubs in Manchester.
D. R.
Cool pub good selection of beers and whisky. Well worth a visit nice beer garden too
S. C.
Exceptional service and knowledge held by staff here. A lot of different whiskeys available of which I tried a few. Not the biggest pud but amazing atmosphere xxx
J. J.
Friendly staff and atmosphere and a decent pint of Guinness
G. R.
This is one of the best pubs in Manchester, and one of my favourite pubs of all time. I have very many fond and different memories in this place! Great beers, whatever you're after. The finest Whisky/Whiskey menu you'll see South of Gretna. Delightful staff to boot. Great nooks and crannies are around the back to hide away and while away an afternoon or evening. Or both!
R. L.
Great old pub with real ale
D. G.
Stunning old traditional pub in its original condition. Nice staff and an outside drinking area for the nice summer days!
R. P.
Do you love a decent whisky? Several hundred bottles representing the best of the Highlands and Islands provide enough unexpected gems to keep you happy. I found my absolute favourite malt in 3 ages, something I've never experienced outside Scotland.
M. W.
Lovely old fashioned pub with plenty of space
G. B.
Very good pub, plenty of bees and whiskey
L. S.
Cosy and quirky with a lovely atmosphere and great beers.
G. K.
A very good range of whisky. Beer is good too. The regulars are friendly and it has a decent sized outdoor seating area. Great spot for an afternoon cigar too.
E. R.
Really lovely old original pub! Quirky art work on the walls outside in tge beer garden & traditional old drinking establishment inside. Loved it. Perfect for a drink after seeing Nick Cave at the Bridgewater Hall which is just around the corner. So expect people chatting about what they have seen at the hall that evening. Lovely friendly crowd. x
C. S.
Lovely beer choices, excellent, knowledgeable staff and the owner is a lovely guy too! What more do you want?
M. M.
Only had the 1 pint in here but a really nice pub with a nice outside area at the back good staff aswell
T. M.
A first class proper pub with a good selection and atmosphere
C. L.
This is a great old pub much loved by customers old and new. I call in At the BP whenever I can which is not often enough and am never disappointed. Great choice of beers, I've enjoyed the food and a colossal selection of whiskeys. One issue may be the toilets, which look as though they need a pressure wash or steam clean, certainly the overpowering smell of bleach was off putting.
P. D. (.
Fabulous authentic pub!
M. F.
It's a great British pub in a traditional style - they have there own unique JD barrel back in Tennessee so if you like bourbon you are in for a treat. Lovely staff and clientele. Sitting in the back room feels like you've gone back in time.
R. D.
A wonderful pub oozing with history and a fabulous place to enjoy a drink or two in. Just the most charming place I've been in for a while, friendly staff too. 👍
M. M.
Fantastic Victorian period pub that boasts a multi room interior, and a great cask beer selection. A full width tap room is at the front, narrow, yet cosy. A corridor to the left takes you round to two very comfortably appointed lounges with fixed bench seating and fireplaces. At the rear is a beer yard for better weather days. Upstairs, a function room is available. Enjoy the rich decor, and the ceilings are especially splendid. Highly recommended, but beware high beer prices...
J. H.
Proper old pub - with interesting craft (and local) ales on offer, including things you wouldn't expect (jam donut beer anyone - better than it sounds) and the barman will let you try a little too!
Great pub for those seeking real old pub arcitecture, make sure you explore all the rooms!
Bar staff are great too. Definitely one to stop at.
E. H.
Loved this pub. A proper English pub is hard to come across in manchester centre, but this hits the spot. Thought the martini on tap was amazing.
W. H.
Beautiful traditional pub, with a sound array of beer and spirits, proper bar snacks and a breathtaking collection of hundreds of whiskeys, all reasonably priced. Indoor seating is plentiful and varied with really cool barrel lid tables, and outdoors is a lovely beer garden.
P. R.
Superb pub with classic old pub look and feel to it. The seating areas are spread out in different rooms and a spacious beer garden. Have a fireplace too. The staff are always courteous and efficient. Ofcourse the best whisky collection around
N. P.
Coolest pub. Massive character. Go immediately.
C. H.
This is a quality old school pub. They have a great selection of beers on. If you want to go in the front bar it's a squeeze when it's busy but there are rooms at the back with plenty of space, it just means you'll struggle to see what beers they've got on.
M. H.
Great pub, good outdoor seating area well established and famous for over 300 whiskey's on sale for those who drink it. Wonderful interior but let down by the gents room definitely in need of refurbishment. The sink in the loo is not a hand basin it's more like a font !! and no amount of cleaning is going to make it look hygienic !!
M. S.
As soon, as I walked in, my phone disappeared. In my mind. Last photo, somewhere outside. Let that talk, for it self, I guess 👌🫡
R. W.
Amazing selection of whisky, fabulous atmosphere, four or five real ales on tap. A truly great pub with three different rooms, cosy and warm. A must-visit pub.
T. B.
Loads of little rooms around a huge central bar make for a homely, welcoming feel. The whisky choice is just amazing, and the beer is very good if you're not in that sort of mood. It gets really really hot in here when it's busy in the winter, as the fires and old heating make everyone steam up. Get in early to get a seat and mock the latecomers for their foolishness.
N. B.
I've been going to this pub for 45 years(!) and the architecture hasn't changed (a gem). The beer used to be Tetlys, then Robinsons (both well kept).A few years ago they succumbed to the microbrewery fad, which is a bit irritating, because one never knows what to drink - still well kept. One of the finest pubs around.
k.
Is this pub as good as it used to be a year or two ago. Sad to say but since the change in management it just doesn't seem quite as clean as it used to. Beer garden usually full of glasses, full ashtrays. Still it's somewhere I will no doubt always go but it's a shame to see a great boozer resting on its laurels.
A. S.
I first went here back in the 1990s and over the years the decor really hasnt changed which is a good thing because it has that old pub feel to it, which is sadly hard to find these days in the city centre. The two orange lit snug rooms at the back are great for those wet windy winter nights. Just get a few pints of the fine selection of real ales, a few friends around one of the tables and away you go! Its also a great pub for summer with a very large beer garden out the back with great views of a certain tower. Beers are reasonably priced too!
T. F.
The Britons Protection is a proper old pub with a decent selection of beers and bar snacks.
The interior is fairly gloomy in a good way, the old furnishings give it that well aged feel. There are plenty of different rooms to sit in, with a front bar that's often pretty crowded and rowdy to a couple of back rooms that are more comfortable and good for a quiet pint. From this back room there's a serving hatch that saves your legs from walking round to the front to get your next pint. Out back there's a beer garden that's approximately the same size as the pub, with plenty of seating and a prime position for picking up late afternoon sun, before it disappears behind the overbearing Hilton hotel building.
This pubs usually frequented by the more mature drinker, but it's certainly one for anyone who likes to drink proper beer in a more traditional pub environment.
C. F.
Lovely old fashioned pub, with a fantastic selection of Whisky.. Apparently the largest in Manchester.
If you look closely you'll see the distance of their guest ales from the pub which is a nice touch.
Do make sure you go through to the back rooms for a little more breathing space.
A. B.
I asked for a couple of Laphroaigs and paid twenty quid, I think the barmaid gave me a seriously old version or something but it wasn't what I wanted. The place has real age and history to it, so it's worth a look, and the range of whiskies is amazing.
B. L.
Great old style pub with character and a lot of "top shelf" whiskys
f. c.
Highly recommended. Friendly, quiet and excellent beers. A must go pub.
M. G.
An excellent old pub with an enormous selection of whiskey. Fireplace to keep warm on the coldest of days this old mans pub is probably one of the best in the city center. I have not tried the food yet but any pie menu is a good menu and I get the feeling these guys know how to make a good pie.
S. M.
A classic Manchester pub. Has over 200 whiskeys beer is always good but often a little unadventurous. Open fires in the back 2 rooms. Staff are very knowledgeable about products. ie whiskey making etc. Be warned hard to escape once they start talkin. I'll never understanding enjoying talking about booze more than drinking it!!
D. O.
The choice of whiskey on offer here is so good that people from Scotland come down to Manchester just to stare in amazement.
J. L.
A Manchester classic, let's make sure this place remains in its home!
S. G.
If you enjoy history, quality whiskey and real ale then this the place for you. Fabulous historic pub with large beer garden and a friendly and knowledgeable owner who is proud oh his pub, highly recommend.
L. H.
A real old skool gem of a pub and the landlord John gave us a fascinating education about his stock of fine whiskies and bourbans - a topic he's really passionate about. We even got to sample some on the house. There's not many pubs like this around anymore and it's staggering distance from the tram!!!
M. Q.
Ideal if you want stay outside in a sunny afternoon. Nice beer garden in the heart of Manchester city centre. Old and characteristic English pub. I'd recommend it for groups.
A. E.
Good beers, but cash only when I was there and over crowded
M. W.
Little old pub handy for Bridgewater Hall and swift beverage.
P. M.
Great pub with the real feeling of a local. Wide selection of beers and lagers and a huge selection of whiskies and bourbons. No a huge place so it can get a little cramped but that just adds to the atmosphere.
P. B.
One of the few remaining traditional pubs in Manchester. Cosy, good beers and no piped music! Great for a chat with friends. Big rooms at the back with proper open fires.
J. B.
Went here last weekend and was set out really nice outside during covid. Brilliant whisky Collection.
M. G.
This is one of the best pubs in Manchester, with a great beer selection and excellent whisky choices. It's cosy, has a big beer garden. In winter, there's open fires too, which is obviously wonderful.
N. “. G.
Good range of real ales and massive range of whiskies. Pre theatre pre this pre that, post theatre . Choice of 3 rooms and a pretty decent urban beer garden.
Pricey but it's the norm nowadays, at the top end of the norm though.
R. R.
Amazing selection of Jack Daniels
L. L.
I really like going to this proper pub in the city centre. It has a warm cosy feel to it with a small seating area to the front of the bar with small rooms at the back. These rooms feel as though you're having a drink in someone's living room, lovely. There are lots of ale and whisky choices and the beer garden at the back is wonderful.
K. G.
This feels far removed from the tarnished reputation it once had. Excellent whisky selection and the staff really know their whisky. Highly recommended
R. H.
Friendly staff. Seating at the bar. Nice classic wood and leather furnishings. Great selection of local Ales. Bit pricey but standard for a Manchester central boozer. Cosy.
A. J.
I love this little pub. I've been going here for 10 years now. Very friendly staff and ideally located for the Bridgewater Hall for pre show and post show drinks.
J. H.
One of my favourite pubs in Manchester. A 'proper' pub with good beer and an extensive whisky selection.
b. h.
I have shall we say a wide and deep knowledge of single malts and scotch whisky in general, this is a place that tests that knowledge, and both of us leave richer, although only one financially!
A genuine old-school pub with a truly epic array of whisky and bourbon along with a decent selection of ale, truly a superb experience.
P. S.
A lovely pub with traditional decor and layout and a very good selection of whiskies. Clean, well priced and the staff were very helpful. Hard not to like!
J. C. S.
One of the best ranges of whisky I've seen casually displayed back-to-back on shelves-upon-shelves around the bar. From pub regulars like Jameson, and Jack Daniels to Glenmorengie and Jura, with even Johnny Walker Blue Label (£20 a shot)! And the architecture is beautiful. A traditional British pub with different rooms, comfy seat and stools, even copper covered tables. A must visit for anyone in Manchester looking for enjoy a good drink, see some of Manchester's history and/or sit someone comfortable with friends and put the world to rights.
W.
Went in early Saturday afternoon and the barman was very helpful and patient with me. Had a delicious heinikan zero alcohol. Very pleasant experience
N. P.
Nice traditional pub with an excellent selection of beers. Whisky drinkers will really appreciate the numbers on offer. Lunchtime food is fine and reasonably priced
M. C.
Fantastic old fashioned Manchester boozer, one of the oldest in the city. Great choice of ales and spirits.
Z. E. B.
Enjoyed this old boozer even as a non-drinker. Friendly crowd and great service in a proper pub with seating indoors and in the pub garden.
For the drinker, there are a wide range of ales on tap and the pub comes with a CAMRA commendation. The best watering hole in Manchester!
J. B.
Great, old school feeling pub. Staff are well-versed about both their beers and their range of whiskey. If it's sunny get in the beer garden out back, they'll also likely have a barbecue on the go!
G. D.
Great traditional pub that's been updated with great lines of beer. It does get quite busy, both bar and lounge. The lounge could do with an update but it does add a bit of character.
N. R.
Great service and friendly staff. Got nice back garden with cover, so you can enjoy a beer on a rainy day.
D. G.
The name originally put me off, sounded a bit nationalist. Turns out there is a great historical reason for the name and after visiting this is one of my favourite pubs in central Manchester. Good beer, good atmosphere, large beer garden.
J. H.
Lovely pint of Guinness with welcoming staff and great atmosphere. Will return
J. I.
A great place to go if you like good beer and whisky's the like you have not seen before. Add that to one of the oldest buildings in Manchester, this pub is amazing. The name came from when during the Peterloo massacre almost 200 years ago they gave protection to hundreds of people. A film called Peterloo had it's premier only a few days ago!
A. C.
A pub, tucked away yet a stones throw from Deansgate. The front saloon looks small and is a great place to sit and sample the hundreds of whiskey's available, while perched at the bar. Alternatively, to the rear are two other rooms, each with a different feel. Sit in front of a fire in the colder months or outside in the beer garden in the warmer months. Friendly atmosphere.
c. w.
Great historical oldest pub in Manchester. Beer choice reasonable but not best cask ales I have had. Not enough staff long wait at bar. Needs a good clean
J. R.
Best whiskey selection I've seen in Manchester.... and probably anywhere. Snug style pub that feels like you're back in Edwardian times especially in the back rooms. Does ale too, but just stick to the whiskey!

The Britons Protection or B.P. is a pub I've been frequenting for 30 years. It is now genuinely at it's best, having revamped the exterior & changed suppliers meaning much better & broader real ale offering these last two years. It stocks hundreds of malt whiskys(as much as anyone country wide),& also has an internally nationally recognised decor & heritage as good as any in the U.K. This pub is genuinely a national superlative.
G. W.
Great proper pub.
J. S.
The archetypal British boozer, complete with antique fixtures and furnishings (think tiled walls and copper topped tables) great British beers and a quirky old school layout.
Perfect location for a central Manchester night out and understandably popular with the locals.
Plenty of Manc charm to boot.
M. W.
Good honest boozer. Decent beer - great whiskey selection. Cosy back room with fire. Often so busy you can't get a seat. Couple of old pub games on/behind the bar if you ask.
T. B.
Very nice traditional pub and one of Manchester's hidden gems.
J. P.
For me this is one of Manchester's hidden gems. Though so many people will walk right past it every day it doesn't get the love it deserves, with probably the best beer garden around if you're prepared to give it a chance. Inside there's a classic bar with a serving hatch in the rear; for easy access. I once saw Nigel Farage campaigning in the Briton's Protection. I hope he doesn't try again, drinking lager shandy he was too.
S. B.
Amazing pub, great team, great beers, whole pub being very sensible, and love the beer garden out the back. Very happy to be able to go!
D. N.
Nice pub. Clearly a big Real Ale place with some nice local beers on display in long front bar. Very pleasant ambience on a chilly afternoon.
C. B.
Good selection of beers but limited seating and gets busy
L. T.
Nice old bar, great selection of whiskies, real fires. Good for winter, I think. Good location. Nice plain normal pub grub.
a. j.
Nice old pub. Worth a visit, great staff.
P. A.
Proper city centre pub. Great ales and an enviable selection of single malts. A pub where you wind up chatting to strangers and drinking more than is good for you in convivial surroundings.
M. D.
Great, traditional British pub. No TVs or jukebox, so folk have to talk to eachother! Great range of real ales and greater reange of whiskys.
D. M.
Georgian pub with decent beer garden and large selection of drinks. Not cheap but a great experience if you're visiting the city or just fancy a pint after work.
A. W.
The Britons Protection is a lovely boozer. Old man carpets, quirky rooms, brilliant circular bar and beer. There's a mixed crowd of regulars, beardy boys, students and people that just love it.
It's a great pub for meeting friends on rainy days over a beer next to a hot fire.
L. P.
Quite a confusing venue with an off-putting title. Nearly ended up in the apartment held upstairs due to no signs / blockade on the stairs going up. Bar seems very small and not entirely a good place to take a large group.
Very niche crowd and can probably be represented with "A lovely a place your Grandfather would visit daily".
B. T.
Brilliant pub with very friendly staff and a huge choice of 🍺
a. M.
The Britons Protection is, in my opinion at least, a quintessential English pub. If you are looking for authenticity without pretence then this is the pub for you. The Briton delivers effortlessly what other pubs try to imitate. It is the perfect place to duck out of the Saturday afternoon shopping crush for quick pint, or to while away an evening with the cast of characters that always seem to be on tap at the Britons. I'll see you there.
A. W.
Lovely old world pub. One of oldest pubs in Manchester. Recommended to view by the CAMRA monthly magazine for its interior. Shame about the price of a pint for an out of city pub.
K. B.
Amazing out of the way pub
H. O.
Very nice friendly pub.
P. L.
A proper pub! A little off the beaten track, just away from Deansgate Locks and opposite the Bridgewater Hall, the Britons Protection is a rabbit warren of rooms and passageways, full of character, and a great place for a pint. No nonsense, no frills - just a good boozer.
J. Q.
No bitter. Amstell £5 a pint. Great Manchester pub
J. b. P.
Good selection of beers friendly staff food available
T. M.
My favourite pub in manchester, lots of character, whiskey and ale. Always a good and friendly atmosphere
D. H.
Lovely place to visit and the barman was a very nice fella. Visited with my dad and step mum for a boxing day tipple. Nice to see its going strong for over 200 years!
B. K.
Proper old fashioned pub, great atmosphere & big selection of beers. Well worth a visit
L. R.
Maybe the best "pub", in Manchester. Loved it for years and it's still a multi-roomed and friendly place. Only problem now is over-priced ale. But now that Manchester thinks it's London, that's not uncommon.
H. K.
A real Manchester classic and a must for real ale and whisky fans. The whisky selection here is beyond extensive, alas I am not a fan. Also the home to a surprisingly good beer garden!
C. M.
In an age of gastropubs and Witherspoon's, the Briton's Protection is a glorious glimpse of the past, combined with a great selection of beers and whisk(e)y. Highly recommended.
S. C.
Amazing selection of beer and a god like selection of whisky from all over the world. Classic traditional pub which I always try to visit when I'm in Manchester.
P. B.
Cracking pub, outstanding whisky collection, great cosy rooms at the back and excellent tap room. Always got good beer on tap each time we've gone.
J. B.
A nice traditional pub in Manchester. I had a good pint and nice night out there. Worth a visit when you're in town.
S. B.
Our favourite pub when in Manchester. Old fashioned, friendly and atmospheric feel to this historic pub with an impressive range of ales and whiskies.
L. C.
A Great Manchester institution although choice of drink is not what it was. A cosy pub with a fantastic beer garden. But I still think better in the winter with a roaring fire.
L. Q.
Great old fashioned pub atmospheric nice clientele no loud music, good selection of real ales and whiskeys.
r. c.
Justifiably a renowned pub with a historic and quaint feel to it - superb snug areas and excellent surroundings and atmosphere. Good service and range of beers.
M. C.
One of Manchester’s secret beer gardens along with an incredible selection of whiskey and some really good beer. The interior is charmingly quirky and it is a really good example of an old British pub.
M. P.
Superb historic pub. Great atmosphere
B. G.
One of the most beautiful old city boozers I've ever seen. Lovely original features - quite ornate, faded splendor. The beer garden could be done a bit better.
S. K.
A historic city pub with it's importance painted on the walls. Needless to say it has a great selection of ales and a fabulous selection of whiskies.
P. M.
Attractive tiled pub with a huge selection of whiskies and various rooms and chambers. Not the greatest atmosphere but worth a visit.
S. H.
Good old fashioned pub although it seems to have been taken over by the Jack Daniels marketing department recently.
Lots of small rooms and so it seems intimate no matter how crowded.
K. M.
Fantastic historic pub. Great bar staff, good beer and huge selection of whiskies. Lovely small rooms.
K.
Brilliant drinks... One of the best pints that I've had in Manchester. I love the decor and old feel of the pub...
n.
Great pub with the best selection of Whisky in Manchester city centre. Staff give great recommendations too
J. M.
I do like this pub, nice selection of beers and a huge whisky selection that needs exploring when I get the opportunity. Good stop off on the way back to the hotel
R. G.
Although not as large as it used to be, still one of the biggest Whisky collections you will find in a pub anywhere. The wild boar and venison pie is sorely missed.
A. H.
Despite living in Manchester for many years it was my first time in this little whisky aficionados gem, bit small on the inside but definitely worth a visit
A. H.
The real thing, roaring fire in the snug, good selection of beers on tap, and best of all no music drowning out conversation. Great pub.
M. F.
Nice place to have a drink and meet friends
C. A.
Lovely, cosy pub. Full of charm and stack to the rafters with different whiskies to try. Well worth a visit but it can get very busy!
C. A.
Proper old fashioned pub maintaining all its glorious fixtures and fittings. Even the dirty minging bogs look original. Great beer though!
B. R.
Excellent friendly and popular traditional English pub. Well worth a visit with a good selection of nice beers.
M. D.
Great traditional pub
G. W.
Great traditional pub selling good real ales and with a massive selection of single malt whisky.
S. J.
Soooo many whiskys! Dream come true! Good range of beer and staff great. Small front bar but plenty of space behind.
S. J.
A nice old fashioned pub. Decent beer selection. Great whisky selection.....but be careful the night can get quite expensive!
G. P.
Absolutely fell in love with Alan, Helen and thier bearded companion, thank you for being the very best thing we found during our trip to Manchester. Ps matching carpet and stools are a safety hazard but overall loving your work! Love the three drunken southern women. X
A. C.
Very pleased to see the place is surviving. Brilliant boozer
s. h.
Nice place chatty landlord
A. M.
Full of working class socialist...debating politics. However the front lounge is airy and more informal rather than the quiet secluded back rooms; Beers okay!🥃
R.
Real pub with a good selection of real ales. Nice outside sitting area. Friendly and efficient staff.
S. K.
I love whiskey, I love this pub. If you love a small, intimate venue with a vast selection of God's own drink then you'll be in heaven here.
M. S.
What a great place! Nice to see a traditional pub with old-style interior in such good health and full of happy drinkers.
T. G.
Great traditional pub
P. D.
Not much to say Good Pub Good Service Good Beer.
G. H.
Would be 5 star if I liked whiskey. Beer selection is good and the place has a really nice old feel to it. Whiskey lovers paradise
R. N.
Great beer, fine decor and top vintage urinals, the place is a must if you like proper old fashioned boozers from Victorian times.
S. N.
An interesting place. With some very serious whisky( £30 a shot!).
I now know where to celebrate if I win the lottery.
S. H.
Great pub with a good selectipn of beers and spirits. The service is always friendly and the fire is lovely to sit by in winter
J. D.
Bustling traditional pub in city centre. Good range of beers and famous for it's whiskey selection. Friendly staff.
S. M.
From MANCHESTER X (eBook):
"Zelinda alighted from the Metrolink at Deansgate/Castlefield and hastily crossed the street to The Britons Protection. Strange name for a pub, but battling the biting cold wind, she couldn’t care less. She was definitely not in the mood for walking around town. She ordered a Cumberland and made herself at home at the bar.
The daily menu sounded like a Northern fairy tale: “Grunt. Gobble + Zoom Coo Pie. Boar, turkey, hare and pigeon in a red wine sauce with a spot of brandy”. A most tempting combination for a simple pie. Zelinda opted for another Cumberland on tap, bringing her day to a premature close."
Enjoyed a fine pint of real ale three weeks ago. Excellent service. Old-style barman who has seen it all. Love their ceiling - meditative setting. Always a welcome stop before boarding the Metrolink or hopping on the 33 to Eccles.
J. P.
While the rest of the city centre continues to be redeveloped at incredible pace, it is reassuring to see that historic pubs like the Briton's (and the nearby Peveril of the Peak) continue to survive and thrive. Fortunately, the Briton's can now count on the additional protection of the Planning Act of 1990 as it is Grade II listed. It was here at the time of the Peterloo Massacre. Its name does not derive from a desire to commemorate the victims although there are plenty of pictures inside which do. Ironically, the building's former purpose was as an army recruiting station.
S. B.
Spent the New Year enjoying their fantastic whisky selection. Such knowledgeable staff and a cosy environment
A. P.
Great old fashioned pub. Well kept beer selection.
S. H.
Lovely pub full of atmosphere and history. Great beer, great service. Near the site of the Peterloo massacre with murals on the wall reflecting this.
M. B.
My favourite Manchester pub. A proper pub, and old-world pub.
With a beer garden. And whiskey. You'll want for nothing more...
C. B.
Great traditional pub, with lots of Manc charm, good selection of draught beer, & whiskey, handy for the Bridgewater Hall too!
J. H.
No whisky for me this time, but the beer on draught was kept well and tasted great, beer garden bustling!
R. B.
Great pub with good selection of beers. Cozy fires in the winter, little sun trap beer garden in the summer! Perfect!!
S. 2.
One of the most iconic pubs in Manchester, wide range of whiskies and ales. Can get quite busy in the various rooms of the pub though.
F. D.
I love this traditional pub near the Bridgewater Hall but it is sometimes a victim of its own success and a bit crowded. Frequented by the Halle and has a story telling club.
L. T.
Fantastic "real" pub. Gorgeous interior and decent selection of ales. Highly recommend a stop.
T. C.
Good service, nice atmosphere, fairly standard pub
G. H.
Many years since I have been in here. Still a classic multi-roomed city bar oozing with old fashioned charm, whilst embracing the demands of the modern drinker
K. O.
Lovely atmosphere a great pub
R. M.
Lots of real ale, some nice wine & all in an historic setting, all in the centre of Manchester. What's not to love.

Visit this one in the winter - the roaring fire in the back room makes it really hot and snug. Good choice of ales and spirits behind the bar. A great place for cosy times with friends.
S. B.
The enormous variety of whiskey and bourbon brands are the pride of this bar. I don't drink but it's really impressive. However I go there only because my friend insist, it's really a place for drinking.
