Reviews of The Shakespeare
M. S.
Good value and service. Great tasting food very reasonable priced
G. M.
I really love this place. It looks very overcrowded by the great big buildings that surround it. But it is a little historic gem. We visited twice, once for a drink. Next time for one of the lovely meals. The staff are brilliant, cleaning withing seconds of somebody leaving and chatting to customers. I was particularly enthralled with all of the original features and took loads of pictures. Food top notch. Atmosphere fantastic and welcoming. It is on our list for another visit 😊
N. J.
Nice little mock-tudor pub with friendly staff and nice food.
A. O.
Brilliant town centre pub. Good food and beers. Friendly staff.
g. C.
Absolutely Superb.
Very reasonable prices indeed given that it has an absolutely prime
location.
If you want cheaper prices go to a run down areas pub - they dont have the understandably huge overheads of The excellently run Shakespeare.
The Restaurant Food is absolutely superb.
And the price of just £7-50 ( 2 at £15) for such succulent, quality combined with the very good and friendly service is Second to.none. -
Quality well kept hand pump and other beers - with choices for the knowledgable ale drinker.
Management top rank. Corteous, polite, discrete and has excellent empathy with the myriad of characters and demographics who use pubs.
And what a superb ambience this generates.
If you are looking for a "Proper" pub- look no further....it is THE Best I have ever experienced in recent years- and by a Country Mile.
D. M.
Nice food, traditional old pub atmosphere, real ale, top staff, well worth looking for when in town, (up a side street so wouldn't usually pass it)
D. P.
Lovely meal. Lots of folk just having drink. Really nice staff. Not been in there for almost 60 years. Bit different then.
C. M.
An old style Manchester pub made up to date with TV, juke box and gaming machine. Real ale sold, currently has Shakespeare Cask ale @ 3.8 abv (I think). Nice taste and currently £4.50 a pint. Staff friendly, contactless payments was down on my visit, cash only, which reduced the custom I suspect.
j. J.
Nice clean pub. Staff were lovely. Food on the cold side
M. W.
Not been in this place for over 20years. Called in on a rare trip to Manchester. It's still got it's charm, being a very old pub, with a lot of its original features still in place. Was a bit disappointed on seeing only a few customers inside considering time of day. Bar prices slightly on the high side.
S. B.
Great authentic pub hidden at the side of Primark. We've been in a few times after shopping and the food is always fantastic with a lovely different menu. Definitely recommend The Shakespeare
S. C.
A cute little pub in the city centre. Staff and customers all very friendly to me (as a lone woman) without it being weird or uncomfortable. Great little stop off for a pint or two.
T. H.
Great traditional pub to call in for a pint. Friendly staff & a good atmosphere. Loads of Manchester tunes playing on the jukebox last time i called in love it. Generally busy especially at weekends day & night.
S. B.
Literally bought a pint & downed while waiting for an Uber. But it was a lovely 'proper' pub & I certainly recommend a visit
R. M.
Good pub, needs a bit of attention, but overall a pleasant atmosphere.
R. W.
Amazing, friendly staff! Great music and they dont charge daft prices for drinks!
C. H.
Quiet on a week night and closes earlier than others, but a good selection of lager
G. L.
Top boozer, no pretentious wannabees, just a decent pint and football on the TV or music on the Duke box!
D.
Very nice pub in the centre of Manchester. Went in on a quiet day and wasn't a bad pint at a good price. Dinner menu looks pretty ok as well.
S. S.
Went in for lunch menu was cut down but still found it good, went in at 12.30 so not bizzy, very clean and tidy staff are very good. Have been hear before and not been disappointed.
G.
Nice pub atmosphere, didn't have any of the food on offer but the drinks are reasonably priced
Only concern is the rowdy attitude of some of the people who go there, but if you can find a quiet bit you'll have no problems
A. M.
Lovely food .Great pleasant service
S. S.
Great old pub in the centre of Manchester. We watched the football from the upstairs which was very comfortable
M. D.
Good location in centre of town. Cheap and cheerful.
Mostly pleasant staff. Young man was especially friendly and helpful. Others not so much.
Good deals on the food but don't expect anything special. All very basic pub grub but good for the prices.
Great for a quick and cheap stop off after shopping.
G. B.
Nice authentic pub.
C. S.
Nice city centre pub, ideal for a quick drink in between shopping
G. W.
It's a decent pub, no more no less
R. D.
Great food..good price..friendly people behind the bar
N. H.
Visited Thursday afternoon (28/10/21) ordered lunch for 5 of us same table but 3 paying separate, first order came out with extra sandwich which was not ordered, bar person young girl dark hair was very abrupt, about extra sandwich being our fault when she fetched chips she litterally threw them on table, second order she sent other bar person (which we think was new to job/bar she was very nice)then third order new (we think) bar person fetched it,with extra toastie, which we didn't order. She just took back no problem, we then thought we had been over charged as 2 extra meals fetched then shall we say grumpy bar person fetched a refund for 1 toastie n chips. She had calmed down by this point but other customers had noticed the rudeness and spoke to us about her.
But food was nice and we had a great afternoon drinking also.
P. F.
Nice pub, good prices and relaxed atmosphere
g. W.
Nice cold pint friendly
T. S.
Great pub, worth a visit.
A.
Very good prices on drinks for a city centre pub. Cracking service.
J.
Perfect no frills pub. None of this gentrified nonsense. Only alcohol, sticky floors and real character.
G. M.
Super friendly, reasonably priced pub in the city centre.
P.
Friends bar staff. Pleasant cosy surroundings and a good atmosphere... Been going in on and off for a good 26 years. Still maintains character.
R. C.
2 rump steak 8oz chips onion rings peas mushrooms value for money less than 14pound for 2 two people,
P. V.
Always go here when in the town centre. Great pint, Warm friendly atmosphere and great excellent staff.
S. M.
Shall I compare thee to a summers day? A very traditional English pub.
m. S.
One of the oldest pubs in Manchester city centre, and still doing very well
Good beer and polite pleasant staff is good to see nowadays, whilst so many bars want to pack you in and serve you bad beer.
I first visited the Shakespeare in 1985, and to its credit it's kept its charm.
Here's to many more years to come.
C. K.
Great little boozer. Good selection of beers and spirits
C. D.
A dated looking pub, which you'd expect given the name. Does have it modern takes with some pictures and TVs. Staff are all really friendly, would say it's bit pricey but that's standard for most city centre pubs.
J. O.
A famous Manchester pub well worth a vicit traditional but looking a little tired inside
R. W.
Great traditional English pub. Warm cozy and friendly . Good ales and English dining. Friendly staff and locals . A good all rounder.
L. M.

J. F.
Well placed for shopping area. So often busy even early in the week.
F. M.
Nice pub and reasonable priced srinks
r. h.
Probably one of the oldest traditional pubs in the centre. Well used by workers.
Menu is great value for money.
N. W.
Very nice pub with friendly staff. Good selection of drinks. Will visit it again.
A. K.
Lovely pub, very cosy & reasonable prices. We visited as part of a performance held upstairs called Tavern of the dead which was also very good.
C. W.
Nice pub and atmosphere, friendly too, enjoyed a couple of drinks in here whilst out in Manchester with my son
c. e.

An old school pub in the heart of market Street, surrounded by fast fashion and slow drinkers.
C. L.
Great and very friendly, nice drinks
K. H.
What a great old school boozer absolutely buzzin
D. W.
Lovely exterior, friendly service but just a bit faded inside.
G. B.
Great little pub
J. C.
Good pub felt welcolm
K. J.
Been a few times to The Shakespeare. It's a Great pub, great staff and a good selection of drinks. The atmosphere is always lively. My only issue is it's too old fashion for me. I can see why its fantastic for people who like that style for its got that very classic pub feel to it but sadly it's not my favourite place to drink at.
Still recommend it though and I'll still be going there in future. 🙂
P. G.
Lovely old place. Good ale, friendly atmosphere and well situated for a bit of shopping. Give it a visit.
a.
Not a visit to to town without a pint in here
M. P.

Nice old pub in the center of Manchester. Had a good carried of drinks at reasonable prices. Serves food although we didn't have any. Had TV's up sleeping sport. Worth noting no AC so is a little bit warm in the summer months. Nice staff and helpful.
v. g.

n. j.

L. M.

I really like this pub. Service is always quick and friendly. I haven't eaten here but the food always looks pretty good. Friendly atmosphere and a well stocked bar.

It was my birthday yesterday and we literally popped into the Shakespeare for a quick gin and tonic Inbetween shopping!!! What a fab pub! I could sit and people watch all day! Great real pub atmosphere and friendly staff!food looked good so we will be returning to spend more time there!!!!
J. J.
It’s a cosy pub with a good range of beers. Staff were friendly. Serves food which wasn’t great but then it was quite cheap so it was to be expected. A good place to pop into for a quick pint but not to stay for a while.
A. C.
We love this place... old pub... friendly atmosphere... they do do food.. but honestly not eaten there... but been told foods not bad.... it's across the road from primark... so you can for a relaxing drink when you've finished shopping... win win ... hope you have a very brilliant day
p. h.
Proper old fashioned pub with a warm welcome.
D. H.
Love this pub good beer and great staff, very friendly
T. A.
It was alright but nothing special. Must be doing something right as it was busy. Staff were very good though. Plastics instead of glasses (it was a match day) won't win this place many fans. Food was ok simple but not spectacular. I'd probably pop in again next time we're in Manchester.
C. C.
Nice traditional style pub perfect for city centre. Reasonably priced beers.
D. O.
Great little pub in a nice central location. Staff really friendly and decent selection of drinks - Will definitely be visiting again next time I'm local !
P. S.
Great place to get beer and watch games👍👍👍👍
B. L.
For the price a decent sunday lunch, nice staff
A. M.
Just about OK pub for a quick pint. Been a few times, but only because it's handily located in the town centre.
Looks interesting and "period" from outside but it's nothing special inside. Visited after an England football match and the toilets were swimming!
It felt safe enough and the beer was fine, although most of the rather odd clientele had clearly been celebrating too much. Two doormen were keeping any unsavoury types out.
P. C.
Nice pub good music and food lovely as well as the staff.
J. M.
Great olde world pub. Enjoyed it. Good experience
K. H.
Good pub
Can get very busy when the football is on
c. o.
Found this on our last day 🙄 wish we had found it early really good old English pub
p. b.
Nice food n friendly staff n nice clean pub
j. l.
A old style pub with an OK list of beverages.
S. G.
Great food at very reasonable prices. Only criticisms, because it was busy we had to sit upstairs but had to go back down to bar to order food and drinks. Also were given plastic glasses???
T. B.
A mouse was wandering around an area of the pub when I went in so I cannot reasonably give it a higher rating. Other than that incident it is a great looking pub, reasonable drinks prices with a good location
S. S.
Good beer and good service
J. M.
Nice traditional pub with great selection of drinks and friendly staff.
J. D.
It's was fairly quiet when we went in. Ordered burgers which were tasty but the menu is quite limited. I use crutches and the toilets are really small even for an able bodied person thus is the only major drawback
S. K.
Lovely staff & surroundings
s. c.
Prices reasonable staff friendly nice pub
J.
Nice small pub, great location after making it out of Primark in 1 piece with a decent variety of beers both bottle and draught.
Not tried the food but smells nice.
M. C.
Lovely staff food was lovely xx
P.
A good old classic of timber framed pub, hiding round the back of Primark! This lovely old classic has a good range of cask ales, alongside the usual range of lagers, shorts, soft drinks, etc. The place is friendly, not too noisy, and a great place to find between shopping bouts.
J. T.
Did you know this pub is affectionately know as the Primani Arms?
Why?
Visit on a Saturday afternoon when its full of blokes waiting for wives and girlfriends to come across the street armed with Primark bags!
Plastic containers on Saturday when the match is on. John Smith's, £3.30.
N. D.
Nice pub good drink
B. R.
Really nice city center pub friendly staff good food great Sunday lunch & selection of beers all reasonably price, don't be put off by the size up stairs seating Well worth a visit ☕🍰🍻🍺🍷🍵☕
D. M.
Nice little pub, always call in when in Manchester bar staff always pleasent. 👌
A. A.
Seems a nice friendly city centre pub.. I went on a wet Monday night for the ghost hunting event run by Flecky Bennett...the pub was far from busy but the locals and the barman were pleasant, the interior nice and clean....(very impressed with the gents lavvies) and the Stella was good, though disappointingly the bitter was turned off at the pumps for some reason.
L. M.
Nice and friendly staff
G. M.
Really nice and friendly pub
P. A.
Love this pub its ideal for when shopping with the Mrs. I leave her in primark's or debenhams and get a couple in. Nice mixture of people and friendly staff. The Mrs then comes to meet me after her shop. Happy days.

L.
Nice wee bar and the barman was super friendly.
D. C.
Love this place, alot of character and clearly a very very old pub, seems odd though it only uses one floor. Its nicely hidden just off market street but the prices looses it one star.
A. B.
Been going in here decades and not much has changed but the staff could do with a customer service refresher course. (Jess?)
N. W.
Amazing service kind caring workers very polite help you in every way they can
P. S.

Good selection of beers. Good, limited menu but what is on offer is good. Oasis from the hussle and bustle of the shopping area.
A real men's crèche.
M. G.
I have been going in here on and off for 20 years or more. Cracking boozer. Lager is pricey but the ales are reasonably price for the city centre. And decent enough
