Reviews of The Temple (Temple of Convenience)
S. C.
This place is tiny but, they make use of every inch of space. I don't think it's an accessible venue though. The bar staff are super friendly and it's worth a visit if you're passing by.
R. J.
This place is just awesome, hasn't changed much in 20 years but that is definitely not a bad thing, just got such a cool vibe and feels like you're in on a secret that not many people know about when you're in, great atmosphere and lovely beers, don't ever change!
B. S.
This place is a real $#%t hole, barely enough room to swing a badger. A former public convenience, it even smells of urine.
I sort of like it. It's a bit affected. The word "Hipster " is as much a perjorative these days as "Chav" used to be, but those formica tables are definitely H💉👎🪱🌱🍤r.
Bar tender was a grumpy little sod. Asking for Jamesons and ice seemed to anoy him. Possibly an act he puts on for people from out of town. So they can get that authentic Manky toilet vibe.
Good music on Jukebox.
Funny graffiti on the walls.
A. T.
Lovely bar. Used to be a public men's bathroom but that was years ago and it's part of the charm!! Good jukebox for niche rock music. recommended
H. L.
Loved it here so much! Amazing atmosphere, really didn’t want to leave xx
N. F.
The Temple is a quirky, cosy pub. I was visiting Manchester for 1 night and am glad my hosts took me there. It is a lovely pub with a good atmosphere. I hope to return when I am in Manchester next.
M. S.
Repurposed victorian toilet to bar. Small but great vibe, full of characters and a great jukebox. Great drinks selection
T. B.
Amazing little bar with no space to move. Not what you always want but wonderful when you need somewhere snug and secure and convenient. Had mulled wine ready on the bar when we visited and a wide range of interesting beers. Staff were really helpful and friendly.
B. W.
Still a little dirty gem. A former Victorian toilet that doesn't smell as bad as you'd expect. Always interesting mix of of locals and tourists. Sunny day today so took me a while for my eyes to adjust to the distinct mood lighting (it's an underground Victorian loo so you wouldn't really expect windows would you). Cosy venue with a rock soundtrack (currently playing Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols). Interesting mix of beers from an American themed pale ale to tuborg via mahou and sommersby cider to the IPA I'm drinking from Outstanding Beers brewed locally in Salford. Not overly priced, but not cheap either. Would recommend as there is no where quite like it this little gem.
A. R. Y.
Cute little bar with a fantastic chilled atmosphere and friendly staff....definitely will be going again!!
P. L.
Always try to pop in when I'm in Manchester. Great bar. Good selection of beer.
G. P.
One of the best bars in Manchester if you dont mind drinking in a toilet (which smells of a toilet). Great draught beers and also a decent bottle selection.

Underground bar.small rock music
J. M.
Tiny bar, great atmosphere. Really cool vibe, well worth checking out.
P. A.
Interesting night, decided to have a bit of a challenge with one of the bar staff to get a can in a hoop; he hit it perfectly...only cost me five shots, was going to give a tip anyway but I like doing little challenges :) twitch Sparhawke :D
S. J.
Great little place that is a bit of a gem. And I would highly recommend their mulled wine this December.
(Picture shows a human female being pleased with mulled wine)
S. J.
Great little gem. Not too loud or too quiet and a very healthy mix of people from 20 to 70....
a. r.
Quick pint. Quirky but super cool location/history/pub
I. M.
The kind of place where you'll end up befriending strangers. Table space is restricted so please share your areas where you can (some people are too shy to ask)
E. C.
Very cool pub, great vibe and music
L. C.
Manchester,s secret underground bar and finest toilet, funky place to hang out, was an old public toilet, recycling at its best!
M. W.
Just a small place great selection of drinks, great atmosphere worth a pop in just to experience the place, on Oxford Rd just down from McDonald's and on route to the train station
T. B.
A unique pub in the heart of Manchester. Definitely worth visiting
C. A.
Lovely hidden gem of a place with a tremendous selection of beers.
D. B.
Absolutely love this place. Always a must go whenever I go to Manchester
G. P.

Lovely hidden gem of a place with a tremendous selection of beers.

Quirky little bar underground. Liked the music and the 'local' feel to the place.
A. K.
Love this little place😊🥂
J. H.
Loved this place, cosy, quirky, different. Will definitely go again
M. A.
Bar staff are super friendly, great place for a few drinks
N. J.
Never sure whether it's open or not
P. A.

S. W.
There was toilets here once. Now there's a bar and toilets
M. P.
An obvious classic... been going here for over 15 years now and it never disappoints. Great beer, lovely atmosphere and the best jukebox in Manchester... what's not to love! Plus, if your lucky you'll spot the odd celebrity...
N. J.
Never sure whether it's open or not
T. W.
One of the best bars in Manchester. Be prepared to breathe in; to both make room for everyone to squeeze in and the smell of the loo if you wind up sitting that close to it! Great jukebox too - but there’s a distinct lack of music from female artists which is a shame. Doesn’t deter from the atmosphere though and there’s a good range of beers.
S. W.
There was toilets here once. Now there's a bar and toilets
J. F.
Ex public toilet now a great bar of character.
L.
Good atmosphere with now some outdoor seating to accommodate covid and the increase in people going out now. Just need to get shot of the turborg haha
A. T.
Did you know there's a secret sub basement level to the building below the bar? It was added as extra bunker/shelter space during WW2. Hardly anyone gets to see down there.
C. H.
Quirky underground pub in what used to be a Victorian toilet. Quite easy to miss as well if you don't know it's there. Reasonably priced sinks and a good selection of bottled beers from site the world.
Seating is quite cosy - there are about 15 small tables pushed in quite tightly. Music Congress from a Jukebox with a good selection of Manchester based artists. Overall well worth a visit for the experience.
E.
Quirky little bar underground. Liked the music and the 'local' feel to the place.
R. R.
Wrote me new LP in here ‘Lost in The Midlands’
Out October 2022
F. M.
A brilliant dive of a place. Underground drinking in a former public lavatory has never been so soulful. It could do with a better choice of beers but space is limited. Well worth a visit.
C.
Excellent quirky little bar. Gets pretty packed, but that adds to the character of the place. Only downside is the music. They were playing some B*Witched and someone turned it off and put Disturbed on. I'm joking. Music was decent for pretty much the entire time we were there. Definitely going to be a staple visit for most Manchester gigs.
A. N.
Unusual 'dive bar' style pub, in an old converted public toilets, below street level. It's a small venue and has a limited number of beers on tap (presumably due, in part, to the limited bar space).
There is a jukebox, so the music in the bar was widely varied and a welcome change from most bars.
Well worth a visit.
T. C.
One-of-a-kind bar in the heart of Manchester. Great music, great atmosphere, and especially great beer. Seating is very limited, so try to get there when it isn't particularly busy. Definitely worth a stop though, for visitors and locals alike.
L. P.
Incredibly unique. Once a public toilet (But don't let that put you off!), the bar is possibly the smallest Bar in the UK that I know of. It welcomes about 15 people, so if yourself and friends go down, expect to be the dominant presence, or be moving on!
Drink prices were a bit high for my liking, due to the nature of the venue of volume of custom, I can only imagine so though.
A good night can be had, but you'll have to be in the right mood. Great for Bar Crawls, a swift in-and-out.
J. H.
Loved this place, cosy, quirky, different. Will definitely go again
R. C.
If you're walking along the streets in Manchester and you hear loud music all of a sudden seemingly coming from the ground somewhere then you're probably close to this place. You might miss it at first or wonder what the place is as it doesn't give much indication that's its a bar, especially without the canopy you see in the pictures.
When you actually pluck up the courage to go down into what used to be an old toilet, you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's not the warmest looking of places but looks cool and novel. Guy at the bar is friendly..ish and the music is loud. Great to discover and good for a place to drop a pint in before you hit the hard stuff or just chill out.
B. M.
Great little bar steeped in history having begun life as a public toilet. It is a tiny place so very intimate. Local band Elbow mention this bar in Grounds for Divorce and I have been served by Pete from the band in this bar as there was a period where they were never out of there. Always worth a visit.
S. M.
Temple bar is one of Manchester's gems. If you haven't been then you're missing out. Get I. There for great beer and a friendly atmosphere. It's only a small place but it packs a huge personality and one that you'll love to go back to. Genuinely, one of my favourite bars to visit when in Manchester. It's an absolute must try.
P. D.
This place definitely is worth more than a visit. It's unbelievable small space - built in an old public bathroom - gives it a comfortable atmosphere to grab one of its various beers at quite affordable prices
The music selection is always excellent contributing to this underground environment.
A. B.
Small dive bar with a great selection of bottled beer and a good range of lager on tap. Not much room to sit down and the toilets could do with a refurb, but all in all its a boozer with a lot of character.
M. F.
Small converted Gents underground just off Oxford Street. Has a good beer menu, but I bet it gets really packed and really hot. Not a place to chatter or catch up, because the rather great selection of music is distracting and loud. Down steps in at one end, swift bottle of Belgium craft beer and up steps out at the other end. Enough of a visit, been now.
L. L.
Quirky bar which used to be an underground toilet. This place has character albeit a little small with a large selection of beers from around the world. The prices are a little high but the bar has a great atmosphere with fantastic jukebox.
T. B.
I think this must be the smallest bar in Manchester. If you're visiting for the weekend it's worth popping in as it used to be an underground toilets that's been renovated which makes it a bit quirky. I don't come here often though, maybe because of it's size and lack of atmosphere. Still good for a quick pint though.
A. D.
Great place with good 80-90's atmosphere, you can choose the music from a selection of hits of those years. The place is quite small, but makes it special and there are always people in there.
Very cool!
G.
Lovely bar, good atmosphere with great choice or music
S. L.
Such a cool wee bar with shed loads of character. The tiny dimensions helps give Temple a cosy and friendly atmosphere, I've even sometimes seen the bar staff sit down with strangers for a chinwag!
Beer choice is fairly good, and prices aren't too bad either.
Let's hope the novelty of having a real, proper beer in the bog doesn't wear off too soon!
D. B.
Converted from a public convenience into a cosy 1 room bar with 4 ales on tap and 50+ bottled beers which you can choose from using the posters on the wall next to it. Walls adorned with posters for up and coming rock acts across Manchester as well as in the Temple itself. Excellent if you love good beer and music. Recommended
R. -.
Quaint and compact pub located in a former Victorian underground public toilet.
Only the railings, stairs and sign are visible from road level.
Staff are friendly and whilst not quite a TARDIS,
it is larger inside than you would imagine.
M. G.
Corbiere's bills itself as the best jukebox in town but The Temple is probably better. Big selection of bottled beers, a few taps, and walls covered in music posters and graffiti. Very small (used to be a public toilet!) so you may not get a table, standing around is fine though.
J. N.
Loved the acoustics of my crocodile shoes clip cloping as I walk down the stairs into the bar. The bar was dark, so not many opportunities to show off my snazzy shoes. Could benefit from under table lighting.
K. V.
Girl kept screaming, man had no shoes on. Nice bar and good beer tho.
A. G.
Lovely atmosphere and the staff were great. Slightly expensive but nothing over the top for a city centre spot.
H. K.
Unusual little bar. Played a nice rocky soundtrack on a packed Saturday night. Packed to the rafters, so there was a great atmosphere. Do yourself a favour and avoid the toilets.
J. M.
Great little dive bar, a hidden gem really. Always great tunes on the jukebox and a selection of excellent bottle and draft beers behind the (tiny) bar - Brooklyn and Duvel to name a couple. Fair warning: it's an old Victorian public loo so has pretty compact dimensions but this just leads to enforced socialising!
N. L.
Very cramped when busy but good atmosphere
B. D.
Sat outside so didn't see inside, nice weather, beer and prices acceptable, interested history
A. G.
One of Manchester's truly great bars. The former haunt of Guy Garvey from Elbow, this underground (converted) public toilet is cosy and attracts a good crowd. Yuppies and chavs will not feel at home here, it is low lit and low profile, offering craft beers and a cracking spirit selection. Music is good (not live) and the bar staff are friendly and helpful. If you're looking for a tavern with local character, you could do far worse.
M. W. (.
It absolutely stinks but if that stops you wanting to go then that is a shame. One of the quirkiest bars in Manchester, it's small, dark and the bar is tiny but it's always rammed because it has character and a decent choice of beers.
G. S.
Hidden gem with fabulously weird decor and great music to check out right in the heart of Manchester
J. J.
A bar in an former underground Victorian era toilet makes The Temple a unique location. However, that’s pretty much all it has going for it!
The Temple is one of those places you have probably walked past 1,000s of times on Bridgewater St and either not known it was there or noticed the canopy at the top of the stairs but never investigated further.
I’ve been here a couple of times now and it is a small quirky venue, I doubt it holds more than 20-30 people. There are no windows so it gets quite dim and dark inside but that adds to atmosphere of the place. Although it’s looking a bit shabby nowadays and could really do with a refurbishment.
The beer selection is not great at all. They have one or two macro lagers on draft, no cask ale and a limited bottle selection which is primarily lagers again.
This place has so much potential to be a quality unique venue. I would suggest approaching the council to permanently close one side of the road, pave it and turn it into a one way street. Then add some outdoor seating and a canopy in order to attract more customers. That’s idea is a little far-fetched, however some basic touches would vastly improve the kerb appeal a splash of paint here and there, possibly a couple of skylights for some natural light. The toilets certainly need improving as they are a grubby and poorly maintained. Then improve the beer selection and they could be onto a winner.
Currently the place is a little lacklustre and will be one of those places you would visit once just to experience the quirky nature. Which is a real shame as this venue could become so much better.
A. M.
Great bar. Hidden, snug and really interesting. Not the biggest beer selection but it's a really charming place and definitely worth a visit.
R. H.
I love this little underground boozer as its right in the heart of Manchester... it's the old underground public toilets been converted but i just love the way you know the busy city centre is all active above your head... do classic beers I normally get a bottle of kriek cherry lager...
j. j.
Well it's different. I can see it's appeal and would have liked it a bit more if it wasn't quite so grungy/dirty. A tad cleaner and it would have been perfect. Great time reading all the posters for the upcoming bands around the city.
L. B.
Every time I go here they play great music I've never heard of. A great dingy place to spend an afternoon of escapism, and if you're lucky you might get a coveted seat at the bar.
G. H.
Small, packed, unique. Reasonably priced. You will do well to get a seat. It must be the smallest bar I have ever been too - but it's pretty good all in all :-)
B. J. D. U.
Lovely staff! The only downside was finding out my gluten free beer wasn't gluten free. They handled it so well though!
C. A.
A repurposed Victorian loo, the Temple (of convenience) is a hideaway with real character. The music is always good and the drinks choice is surprisingly broad given the lack of space. It's sometimes too full to even fit through the door though.
H. D.
Very quirky. Nice clientele and friendly staff. Unfortunately the loos were a bit of a state but hey ho, the atmosphere was great so would recommend :)
S. R.
An outstanding gem hidden beneath the urbanised industrial heart of Manchester. A fantastic place for a drink but don't get me wrong, it's a bit of a toilet 😆
Not your "bog standard" bar!
B. M.
What a smashing place for music in Manchester!
L. T.
Very small, very different pub. This used to be a public toilet ( where Alan Turing was arrested for importuning) and now serves pretty good beer.
D. K. A.
A beautiful place to have adventure
J. k.
Qwerky place great atmosphere little hidden gem... Used to be a toilet encase you didn't know but is now a nice little bar good stop off for a quick pint of a chill. Recommended..
L. T.
Really funny tiny pub to enjoy a beer. Nice service.
Improvements could be the cleanliness of the toilets
B.
Good place to sit have a beer n watch the world go by
p. c.
Tiny little bar with lots of character. If you are in Manchester go for a pint here .
E.
Nicely decorated place.
The Kopparberg I got was on the expensive end (£4.8), and the music was way too loud for such a small place, resulting in audability issues between me and my friend.
N. H.
It's an old toilet. Weirdly cool, good beers, music and staff. What's not to like? Can get very busy on match days, will be back.
R. B.
This place is pretty cool and quirky! It's pretty small and cramped when you get down below, but if you can grab a seat it's a great little place to grab a few beers.
S. L.
The unique location and reasonable prices aren't the only reason you should go. The music selection is faultless and the atmosphere is always fun. Nice choice of drinks just completes the package.
M. E.
Best pub in Manchester. Had so many great night there and more to come. Love the place
J. L.
Iconic drinking joint beneath the pavement of Oxford Street. Loud, brash, scruffy and brilliant with a goid selection of beers. And they take contactless if you insist. Wirth a visit.
A. B.
Nice atmosphere, decent pints and friendly staff.
M. S.
Hidden tiny gem with one of the best beer selections
R. F.
If you're looking for somewhere different to drink in Manchester then this is definitely the place. A great little bar.
R. D.
Cosy, narrow venue that makes conversation with strangers on nearby tables feel natural. Nice beer and a decent juke box are big pluses as well!
C. B.
A really nice small bar beneath one of the busiest streets in the city the Temple has a good atmosphere and well priced drinks.
J. C.
Love it - my first ever Manchester pub experience. It might be subterranean, but the music (Bowie) and beer (varied) was stellar.
I. S.
Been walking past that bar for years and finally went down in! Small cosy bar with good Rock music, nice ale on tap 🤘
J. L.
Only popped in for a quick one on our travels. Always a good pint and a friendly welcome. Love this little gem.
X. J. S.
If you like basement bars converted into toilets, sure place to go. Cosy warm and relatively clean (as a former toilet) - go for it. Go for the beer!
H. S.
They had very different tipes of beers, a fantastic place to drink some beers with your friends or who you want. Recommendable 100%
J. H.
Victorian toilets converted into one of the most unlikely awesome bars where you can meet any manner of musicians, weird and wonderful people over a great pint.
N. M.
Small, old style and quirky bar. Really nice atmosphere. Good beer
J. T.
Unusual setting, a quirky little bar with some really decent cider and cask beers, friendly staff so overall a hidden gem in City Centre!
B. A.
We are French tourist and we visited the temple yesterday, the place was amazing. Our favorite place in this bar is definitely the toilets ! So underground !
G. W.
Characterful little bar serving a range of bottled continental beers and standard draught keg offerings.
C. C.
Awesome small bar in good location of town. Ex public toilet, it can get a little cramped at the weekend but great vibes and good jukebox
P. W.
Very nice and strange the same time.
L. H.
It's a unique place for sure. Super small and a bit rough around the edges but good beer and music so perfect for a beer with mates.
L. s.
Eclectic mystic. You could mistake it for a 1970s public toilet from the outside but once inside -- intimate, relaxed, alternative vibe. Great for mates and conversation.
J. B.
Cute little bar that use to be a gents lavatory ( cottage) all the beers on offer have been passed by the owner
A. S.
Tiny little bar in a converted public toilet. Very rock-bar in nature - loud music and walls covered in gig posters etc. Good vibe but be prepared to shout to be heard by the person sat next to you!
e. p.
Love this little bar. Great place to visit, good music, good vibes all round
A.
-Funky
-Good service
-Variety of drinks
-Nice atmosphere
N. M.
There was a bar fight. Some drunk dude called another dude a jew. I got splashed with beer and moved away slightly. 10 out of 10, would do again.
D. W.
An unusual space in an underground converted public toilet. A small range of drinks as the bar is small. Wouldn't recommend if you're with more than a couple of people
R. M.
Best smallest pub in the world. Great music. Authentic toilet. Enjoyed it very much.
A. K.
Love this little place😊🥂
W. G.
Great beer selection, great crowd! A bit small, but most great bars are!
g. t.
Alright little underground bar. Nearest bar in that area of its type I'd say
P. P.
Love this place. Been my fave bar in Manchester for over 10 years
w. w.
Amazing little alchemist of a drinking establishment. Quirky and a bit gimmicky even. But well worth calling on any visit to Manchester.
A.
nice and quirky little place with good selection of drinks, good music and reasonable prices
C. H.
If I'm in the area I've always got to go in here. Good selection of beers and a great jukebox.

You come here for the novelty. Used to be a toilet, but is now a quirky, intimate small bar underground. Great atmosphere
L. C.
Not so many draught beers options, but nice selection of bottled beers and amazing soundtrack!
D. M.
Fantastic boozer, converted mens toilet, great atmosphere and beers, great staff, you got to have a look
D. B.
No frills, but a good atmosphere and great music. What more do you need with a cold drink.
G. W.
Lovely and cosy, good prices and good music.... Could gladly sit in there all evening.

Super cosy, great selection of bottled beer, not alot of room but great atmosphere.
M. ..
Simply the best. Coolest cucumbers here to the best jukebox in town. nice Guinness too!
c. c.
Very strange, due to its size limited choice and quite expensive but definitely a strange quaint bar
S.
Interesting place situated in an old public toilets. Keg beer but as it is quite quirky that can be forgiven
D. P.
A bit dark but good beer n a nice jukebox. A must if just to say you've been.
C. M.
A nice place, beer wasn't great but I'd go again for the unique venue.
G. V.
A great atmosphere, fantastic music and a brilliant crowd (including bar staff).

Been going to Temple for a few years, really cool place in an old Victorian public toilets, good atmosphere and great beer
I. R.
Perfect little bar in what used to be two sets of public toilets. Very imaginative use of the space,.
D. B.
Great dive bar underground in a converted public toilet.. great jukebox and pretty good selection of craft beer..
J. M.
Definitely a must see for the novelty factor. Boasting the name of smallest pub in Manchester, this place still smells like the toilets it used to be.
D. G.
Great lesser known place with great character small cosy bar but was enjoyable
S. H.
Great atmosphere, cracking beer & fantastic jukebox music. 100% recommend
J. A.
There's a hole in my neighbourhood down which of late i cannot help but fall

Love this bar for its history and its atmosphere... One of the last of the few gems in Manchester...
C. H.
Very cool little pub which was converted from an old mens urinal. A piece of Manchester history!
U. M.
It's not the subway entrance!! But there's rock&roll.
Different place almost invisible from the street.
D. T.
A Manchester institution and one of my favourite locals. Always a great atmosphere and pretty good jukebox.
D. G.
Dark as hell. All sorts of n'er do wells in the pub. Chunder covered toilet floors. Brilliant!!
M. D. (.
Unusual bar based in what was, in times gone by, men's public toilet. Fantastic jukebox.
T. P.
A pub which used to be an old public toilet, where the beer is strong and the smell of urea has long since evaporated
R. H.
It's a bog!! It's meant to be that way. Thoroughly recommended for people who like sitting in a bog. Interesting selection of bottles.
D. R.
Nice little bar with good drinks, great music selection
A. M.
Coolio
M. H.
Easily the best bar in the world. Southern Comfort and beer!

M. K.
Nice beer. Feels like home. Love the toilet graffiti
A. C.
Unique venue. Very central and a good place to start off a night with pre-drinks.
S. M.
Good to pop in for a pint or two but can get packed due to its small size.
e. p.
Very welcoming
E. N. M.

*This pub is a n acquired taste.
To describe this pub to someone else, what with it's drab decor and less than adequate cleanliness, you'd have a hard job selling the place. But for me, this tiny little watering hole has a bunch of character, a good juke box, and some nice beer to choose from.
If you're a Deansgate Locks type of person then you'll probably die of shock. But if you like the rest of Oxford Road and Manchesters alternative scene then you might just fall in love with this little place.
P. S.
Loved it

(Translated) Hmm ... As already mentioned, the toilets are not recommended. Otherwise a small pub with plastic flowers in empty beer bottles halt
(Original)
Hmm... Die Toiletten sind, wie bereits erwähnt, nicht zu empfehlen. Ansonsten halt nen kleines Pub mit Plastikblumen in leeren Bierflaschen 😏

(Translated) Very warm atmosphere, friendly environment, everything you need for company, the store is a bit small, of course, but very beautiful and smart decoration. It also has a jukebox which works and plays music from there, and every day of the week it has a different event which writes it in different parts of the store with big left. The only downside I found is that it's a bit expensive and d has a lot of variety in barrel beers, but it's worth going at least once. If you like rock, it's worth a little more, since there are few pubs that have music and in fact quite loud! However, you can talk to the person in front of you as a person and not get upset.

(Translated) If there was only one bar to visit in Manchester, it would be the temple. The picturesque setting of these old public latrines is as exotic as you want. The fauna that populates it is as varied as it is possible in this city. the After is of course done with Big hands.
