Old world, classy, great beers outstanding food. Dog friendly. Probably the best covid separation installation in any pup in Newcastle. Fish Finger and mushy pea sandwich

What a treasure chest this place is in the city centre. Great staff Dog, friendly, nice seating area and fantastic food. We had the Christmas set menu. So much tasty food. Big shout out to Dean too. Thanks so much! They were my 😎😅

A very nice authentic looking pub. Great atmosphere and food. Price of lager and ale are a bit steep.
G. G.
A dog friendly city centre pub with bags of character. Lovely food and a good selection of real ales.
E. S.
Food was delicious, staff very friendly and helpful, really good atmosphere. The decor was really nice and most importantly the drink were good and well priced. The toilets were clean as well.
Undoubtedly a place to ho back to. Dog friendly too which added to the entertainment.

City Tavern is a great bar with excellent drinks choices! Bar hound is a particular favourite 🍺👌 the bar has lovely deco and is a great place to eat and drink all day!
M. F.
Lovely friendly city centre bar. Drink was served well and G&T was delicious with the added raspberries and strawberries, nice little touch. Comfy seats and menu looked good but cannot comment on food as didn't try it this time.
G. S.
Lovely city centre pub, with a cosy vibe and dog friendly menu! One of the best burgers we’ve had …with proper chunky chips!
L. R.
A excellent pub in the city centre, a good choice of beers and wines, and good food. Recommended.
J. B.
Came in on Tuesday and Alice and Alana were amazing! (Sorry if I have spelt your name wrong) customer service was fantastic and service with a smile! Shame the owner had a face like a slapped backside and couldn't care less about me as a customer! You're lucky you hired those two lasses otherwise I wouldn't be recommending this pub! Thank you for a pint with a smile and for cheering me up girls!

Depends what you are looking for.
A great place for darts competition as well as karaoke nights and of course pre/after match drinks, just opposite the stadium.
Nice friendly people, employees and customers. Overall a nice friendly pub
A. D.
A fantastic bar and outdoor seating area and tv. The food is also amazing and well presented. Great friendly staff. A great range of drinks also. I have been going to the City Tavern for years!.
J.
Best Gluten free/vegan meal I've EVER had in a restaurant! Being free from makes it so hard for me to eat out and adding I'm a Veggie on top it's near on impossible but the city tavern have some awesome options and are reasonably priced especially for the amount you get!!
Just make sure you don't eat before hand coz by gum are the meals huge and so delicious you'll not want to leave a scrap!
The city Tavern is also dog friendly (there's water and treats for the pups)
It has a lovely chilled out vibe and is absolutely spotless,
There is ground floor seating with alot more up some flights of stairs, my mums disabled and found the two steps at the entrance a little difficult but managed and said it was worth it for the food!
I do believe there is a disabled toilet on the ground floor....but don't quote me.
This place is an absolute gem and I can't recommend it enough!!
J. C.
Food was brilliant, couldn't be better, great selection of beers too.
Not a lot of room for a pushchair and the highchair though, we've got 2 children that needed highchairs, we felt a little cramped and the highchairs were too low for the younger child, she could have hurt herself if she moved her head forward.
M. L.
We found this fantastic pub on our last day in Newcastle before returning home to Liverpool, the menu was fab, great food, lovely decor, lovely friendly staff & we even got to speak to the chef, we highly recommend this place, it's a little hidden gem off the high street ❤
B. S.
This is a very nice pub which I highly recommend to anyone in search of friendly vibes and good beer, although I didn't stay long I would definitely visit again when next in 'toon'.
L. R.

Another of Newcastles regular locals haunt .much larger after the renovasion .Upstairs has love music. Ask for details . Good menu for food and z gin menu too.
P. B.
Dog friendly.
Awesome looking bar, interiors are on point, fab decor, worth a visit just for a butchers alone.
Average Sunday roast dinner, roasties are actually slightly roasted potatoes.
Great gaff though! Worth a visit for one or two.
I. H.
Nice food and beer pub. Atmospheric location with subdued lighting great selection of ale, larger, gin and whiskey. Lot of tables both up and down stairs. Staff knowledgeable and friendly.
A. P.
Really good food, good drinks and great bar! But the staff are rude and not bothered…and the prices are ridiculous! But I must add that the owner is on the point and clearly knows his job! Thank you for contacting me David!
S. V.
Great spot for a quick lunch. Stopped in for lunch before a meeting. Had a great fish finger sandwich and chips. They have a number of beers on tap, unfortunately I was on soft drinks. I'll be back to sample some beers in the future.
c. M.
Great place for food. Service a little slow but was very busy. 2 course Christmas menu great value for £20. Cooked very well & presented well. Would recommend a visit. Drinks a little pricey
M.
It's really hard to find anywhere dog friendly that serves food as good as we had today. Lovely pleasant staff, beautiful decor and very comfortable

Haven't been as a couple since covid, we thoroughly enjoyed our once routine Saturday or Sunday visit BEUTIFULL Bar excellent staff Inc our new 1970s look a like friend MARC BOLAN , FANTASTIC PINT OF HIENIKEN, and two amazing ROAST 🐔🐓 DINNERS, while watching LAUREL AND HARDY
T. L.
Wonderful atmosphere in one of the older Newcastle ale houses. Great choice of beers ciders and food. Service was excellent and helpful at the bar. Dog friendly.
K. P.

R. O.
Great night fabulous tequila and the lights dimmed r8ght on time for end of night laughs and wind down after gigs one of the best selections of cast ales and fabulous atmosphere x thanks chaps had a ball 👍
I. P.
A hidden gem in the city centre. Really good staff and a wide selection of beers. Plus the bar itself looks like a place you actually want to spend time in.
M. F.
first visit to this place and I was very impressed with the service and hospitality of the staff. good selection of drinks and at good prices too.
D. K.
Always a good selection of drinks, friendly helpful staff and great quality food. Often busy without being packed out, a real treasure in the city centre and a great place to have some "thinking" time to yourself.
S. M.
Lovely place. Like an old study. Great for a drink. Fantastic pub food, try the ducks eggs!
A.
mmmmh so yummy! great food, many lunch, dinner and snack options. loved the salmon asia style. And they offer the Stokes sauces, the best brown sauce of GB!
dog friendly and our 12-year-old son also loved this place - you can watch oliver hardy and stan laurel or football while chilling in that cozy pub.
A. L.
Great pub with plenty of real ales and good choice of gins. Food is very and the staff are friendly and helpful
W. O.
I really wish this place was nice as it looks like a cosy place from the outside however it was not as nice as it looks. I went with my father, we got 2 Sunday dinners and they were both stone cold. We also ordered a strange cocktail which cost £10 and it was a strange Bloody Mary like drink. Revolting.
J. W.
Definitely will be returning next time I'm in the city!! Very friendly staff and regulars, great atmosphere and very flavoursome food!!! Even spoilt the pooch!!
C. C.
Great pub. The food was great and plentiful whilst not breaking the bank. It's also Uber dog friendly (which is my favourite part). Will definitely return.
D. H.
Looks good, cozy, but when ordering food be aware of a 25 minutes wait for your order
E. W.
Unless you're booked on the Friday night it may be worth going elsewhere as every area was booked up and full and people kept trying to come into booked areas just to buy drinks
A. K.
Staff were friendly, a bit slow but I think he was new. Great selection of gin and nice decor and atmosphere. Located on the side-street next to Primark on Northumberland St.
P. S.
Great atmosphere, banging tunes on the jukebox blaring out prior to heading to the game
A. T.
A pub that has vastly improved on its previous incarnations. Staff are very helpful, beer is good , food is generally of a high standard, it's cosy and comfy.. I know it's a cliché but it is an oasis of calm.
J. M.
Pleasant venue slap in the centre of the city, good atmosphere and fine for a pre show meal but not a wide ranging menu.
R. E.
Had a lovely lunch with our two boys. Staff were so friendly & helpful. Food was very good & tasty plenty to choose from and the red wine was very nice to. Good recommendation from Robinson's Pet Store.
J. K.
Very dog friendly which is great for us and food very good. We had an enjoyable afternoon 😊
j. s.
Nice bar lovely gin would love to try their meals will definitely be going back.
J. B.
good pubs, good atmosphere and excellent venue for pre drinks for City Hall
D. S.
Nice bar, quiet and comfortable. Decent cask beer selection.
R. M.
A fantastic burger at this pub, and to quote Bob Mortimer, "the heaviest chips you've ever seen, Paul". Definitely a recommend, the only improvement when I was in would be to open the upstairs up for more space. Must have been a staff issue, but it just would have given us a bit more room.
D. S.
Nice City Centre pub. Grear staff and decent beer selection.
Y. W.
Lovely food, decent seating and surprised how nice it was inside
I. B.
Really cool bar, great atmosphere and good selection of drinks. Something different from the run of the mill pub
P. J.
Lots of memories. Good atmosphere, main issue was a long wait for good to be served.
N. W.
Great food and excellent ales. Love the decor, or lack of it! Laurel and Hardy movies playing, silently, continuously - heaven.
T. C.
Went her after our wedding. Sat in outside area. The whole place is unique and fantastic. Was table service due to Covid restrictions. The staff were efficient and friendly. Food was stunning. Made the day even more special.
D. A.
Its a great looking, but overpriced pub. Food (steak pie) was poor but expensive. Staff were fine, but i wouldn't go back.
S. P.
Nice layed back atmosphere food and drink good at a reasonable price......Happy Days !!!!! 👌👍
V. S.
Quirky little bar, serving food and an extensive drinks list. We picked here so we didn't have far to walk after our meal to the City Hall afterwards. Pre-booked a table easily online and it wasn't as busy as other places in town.
Only downside was my meal. I ordered chicken skewers and they were tiny, it wouldn't have mattered as much if they had come with something like a handful of chips or salad there was just dollop of chutney under them. My partners burger was really nice and came with chips, slaw and onion rings he couldn't finish it, so I helped him!
l. h.
Decent pub always go there after shopping share a bottle of wine b4 taxi home
T. F.
Lovely atmosphere, lovely food (would certainly recommend the Mussels), nice to have the choice of being slightly quieter upstairs. Décor is great! And dog friendly.
K. B.
From ringing to book to paying before we left. Every step was absolutely friendly experience. Went there after my mum got married and the staff were amazing , food next level & drinks so refreshing. The whole bar inside & out is beautiful. Will be returning, ALOT
I. C.
Tonight the food was cold on arrival. As I left I brought this to the manager's attention. To say that he was dismayed would be an understatement. He recompensed me immediately despite my protestations that wasn't why I brought it to his attention. I realise in the post covid era all of the hospitality industry is short staffed and for the time of day the restaurant was extremely busy.
f. g.
Popped into City Tavern for a refreshing drink whilst shopping. Not been able to get there for a long time and it was great to be back.
Loved the new beer garden! Select, cosy, fresh and to summarise, a little haven in city centre.
Menu looked great, but will need to pop back to try a few of the tasty offerings.
Service was friendly and prompt.
Lots of space inside and plenty of sanitizer around.
It was fabulous to have a touch of normality again.
H. S.
Fab place, rums exceptional. My dig Lilky was welcomed with open arms, a great deal of tickles and a fresh bowl of water which was well received. The guys are great people people! Many thanks from the nutters from Devon 😁
M. Y.
Superb pub beautifully fitted out. Excellent range of beers gins and whiskies. All tables are Covid compliant with glass barriers. The menu offers a great range of food for meat eaters, vegetarian and vegan diners alike. The Christmas menu looks very good offering two and 3 course options to suit all appetites. The food came well presented and hot, I had the minute steak sandwich which came on fresh baked bread with choice of fries or hand cut chips(I recommend the latter) absolutely fantastic. My partner had the classic burger which was a proper meaty pattie well cooked and moist in the middle, the portions are impressive, you best be hungry . All washed down with the excellent Wylam brewery beers
Would recommend to anyone
R. N.
Really nice food and atmosphere. Will definitely be back
S. K.
Popped in for a pint before a gig. The tavern always has a good atmosphere and you can bring your dog. What more could you want.
B. H.
A lovely quaint building with some interesting quirks of architecture.
Well handled socially distanced party. Bar staff were perhaps a little overwhelmed but carried on with smiles.
Buffet food was perhaps a little basic but very plentiful
N. S.
Just Brilliant Food and Staff were Excellent we were a party of six and all of us loved the service and the food .Went back on Tuesday march 29th to re vist this Excellent Pub with my Family the food was amazing and the staff are excellent This Pub is Brilliant if you just want to chill out and relax with Excellent Surroundings, Excellent Food and The Staff are Just Brilliant it totally made out day out , Thank You
K. G.
I usually love this pub. But the pint I received today was like poison, either bad beer or pure pipe cleaning fluid. They changed it for a completely different drink without any trouble.
S. S.
Lovely food steak and ale pie best I had 😋😋😋😋
P. C.
Good ambience, friendly staff, excellent beer choices. Comfortable for singles of all persuasions and styles. Great place to meet friends too
E. P.
Great place for drinks (and food if you like). A dog-friendly bar as long as they're well behaved!
R. G.
Nice pint before going to 02 City hall for SLF gig.
S. C.
Lovely place! Great service. Top place for a quick, quality pint of ale once ya done shoppin'.
N. W.
Brilliant dog friendly pub. Wished we'd give it sooner
C. A.
Nice place great selection but overpriced
A. H.
Great pub with great beers! Shame the kitchen shut so early (around 18:30) on our last visit, as the food coming out looked delicious!
G. R.
Love City Tavern, when you can get a seat lol, was busy today but lovely friendly staff although me being little, it took a while to get served lol. Defo will be going in again soon x
K. D.
USA adverts luncheon at the tavern period the food was very good the atmosphere was fantastic and they were wait staff was fabulous and friendly period I love the books all in the windows
R. A.
Lovely pub. Expensive
O. R.
Pricey but a good atmosphere.
J. R.
I really like it. A relaxed friendly atmosphere and the food is good too.
j. s.
Great place , great decor ,fab drinks and the biggest boubon selection .
J. L.
Brilliant staff and food. PJ, the manager was extremely attentive and makes lovely cocktails!
S. H.
Great selection of real ales and a secluded beer garden for most seasons. Can't wait to return and try some more drinks.
J. T.
Good city pub with nice selection of food and drinks. Meals are always of a decent quality, but prices across the menu are a little inconsistent. Some things are very reasonable, others a little too expensive. Atmosphere inside is relaxed, although can get very busy if you're looking for somewhere a bit quieter. Staff are great and the bar is dog friendly. They also have a range of vegetarian and vegan options which is always nice to see.
A. K. T.
Really nice dog friendly pub.
J. R.
Very handy indeed for turbo beers if you're hitting a gig up the street at City Hall! It's a quirky looking joint and a good selection of real ales it has. By no means cheap sadly, but fairly standard central prices for sure. The grub coming out looked decent and the service and staff was absolutely sound. Not a place I ever really go much because I don't drink in town frequently, however it's definitely popular and worth a look in.
K. s.
Chicken was lovely, really tasty.everything that came with it was excellent. Table was v. Sticky from previous night where my friend sat. I was really happy with what I had. Service was very efficient.
J. W.
Great food with lots of vegetarian, gluten free and some vegan. A good choice of draught beers plus lots of spirits and cocktails. We ate outside but inside looked very welcoming and inviting, not what we expected from outside. Certainly nota rough city centre bar! Very good coronavirus measures in place with very solid and secure high barriers in pla6but built in keeping with the existing interior. Well worth a visit for food or drink.
A. W.
Nice venue but disappointingly limited range of beers and wines in particular.
L. M.
Fantastic staff, went for Sunday dinner with the two dogs. Lovely greeting food was great amazing gravy. We will deffo become regulars, can't wait to try food during week.
J. E.
Excellent little pub on a quiet side street. Looks very unassuming and deceptive from outside but has quite a spacious interior. Good selection of beers on tap. Comfortable seating. Good place for meet up with friends if you're not seeking anything too loud or wild. I would definitely visit again.
K. K.
Nice wee family place in heart of town
j. p.
Great atmosphere, wide range of alcoholic beverages but the price 😏
d. m.
Worth a visit great selection of ales and food
S. T.
Lovely pub with a good range of real ales, dog friendly.
G. W.
Good City Centre Pub, not much outdoor space meant smokers smoke drifted over non smokers, not the best when trying to eat. But good service, beer and nice food.
W. S.
Dog friendly and great beers on offer. Not the cheapest but good quality beer, loads of ales and few different ones on tap and the food is excellent - you pay for what you get after all. Little outside area as well for when you want a bit of fresh air. Good to pop in any time of day.
P. G.
This is great pub went pre concert
M. N.
It's ok drinks our fine staff very nice no covid barcode to scan had to fill form in this should of been up and running as been closed long enough other than that there is hand sanitizer available on entering and outside and inside the toilets also in other locations also there is a extractor fan where they r expecting people to sit and it is freezing as you r getting the cold from it a member of staff did say it was not theres but why put tables there and expect people to freeze
F. M.
Great place great food great atmosphere what more could anyone want. Couldn't do enough to make our visit a very pleasant one.
J. H.
Great staff, good beer selection, enjoyed the food. Very clean bar area and facilities
R. R.
First visit on years and it has changed. Selection of real ales is good and food menu looks appetising. Improved decor since I was last in. Not a fan of bubble handled glass, so will ask for a straight one when next visiting.
P. D.
Friendly staff. Good pint.
S. J.
With the 5 swans closed we popped in here to try it out as we'd never been before. Inside was quite nice and comfy though the music was a bit bland. They had old peculiar on tap so got a pint of that and was handed 5p change from my £5 note. And it's for that reason alone that I won't be back.
K. C.
City centre pub. Still selling a canny pint of Theakstons Christmas Ale.
P. W.
Very nice but drinks are very expensive. That said, the staff are really friendly, the place is very clean and there's a good outdoor seating area upstairs. The food is a good few levels above your average pub fare too. Kids and dogs are welcome too.
c.
Have used this pub twice coming up from Boro to watch plays at the theatre .good beer friendly staff and good laugh with the locals .
S. D.
Very welcoming staff. Lovely real ales and fantastic food at a very reasonable price. Spoke to the manager who seemed very amiable. If what he says is true about the hate campaign he has endured from the Rock community, then that is disappointing. It seems a group normally renowned for their easy going, trouble free and friendly attitude have come together on an unfounded campaign of hate, normally reserved for the likes of the far right wing.
T.
Perfect place for a break in the city centre madness (as fabulous as Newcastle is) Many visits and everyone one of them exceptional. Great choice of gins and beers, wonderful food and first class, friendly staff. No better place in NE1
A. K.
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff drinks and food could be a little cheaper 😋
A. D.
second time back today since restrictions allowed us .Best experience ever lush food and drink both times well impressed and good attentive staff.
My pub every time 😚
T. A.
I only met my sister here after she had been out shopping all afternoon with my daughter, but from what I can gather it looked like a really nice place. It felt really homely it had a good few large screens around, it's also got an upstairs with a bar as well. But quiet enough if you wanted to be just you and your significant other.
S. A.
When you see a place with tavern in the name, you want the atmosphere to be just that and this place did not disappoint! Lovely olde worlde decor, great staff and lovely beer! Just stopped in to kill some time before catching my train from central back to my own city and didn't wanna leave 😀 yet another place that made my Newcastle visit awesome, thanks!
A. A.
What a fabulous hidden gem in the city centre! Close to haymarket and a handy place to stop and grab a bite to eat or just have a pint when the winter chills send you reeling on the streets. The staff are warm and welcoming and I highly recommend the vegan lasagne! Definitely my new favourite place to chill.
A. M.
Absolutely lovely little place, the drink is fantastic and the food is second to none. With having a gluten free friend their menu never fails fails to deliver. Being dog friendly is an added bonus.
J. G.
This pub is really nice inside and the staff are always great. Price-wise however, their beer is just overpriced for the area. This has crept up over the last year or so but at nearly £4 for an ale (fairly generic ~4%) and £5 for anything carbonated, I feel this offsets many of it's positives. Apart from catering to the overspill from events at the City Hall, I'm not quite sure who their target audience is anymore. I do love Laurel & Hardy which tends to play on loop, so that's nice.
R. G.
Fantastic gem of a bar ,quirky great staff lovely food,u pay a bit more but we'll worth it
J. O.
First time in and pleasantly surprised. Nice decor, friendly staff and best of all wine was good quality. We went at a quiet time found comfortable seats and spent a pleasant time enjoying the ambience.
S. M.
Very friendly and excellent lunch
b. o.
Spot on.. especially if you like laurel and Hardy
T. A.
Quirky interior very comfortable good choice of drinks. Nice little find whilst shopping with the daughter in newcastle.
P. T.
Just had the most amazing meal. 2 fantastic plates of vegan food mid restaurant week. Service was quick, staff were amazing and efficient and I'm now totally stuffed. Jack fruit, who knew?! 😍
I. D.
Very nice, a relaxed cosy atmosphere.
C. Y.
Love it ! Great pub, ambiance 👌👍can't comment on food but will be back
A. H.
Unassuming from the outside but a stylishly decorated gem inside. TV screens and a variety of beers. Knowledgeable staff
D. S.
Went for Sunday lunch today....Quite possibly the best I've ever had!! Bearing in mind I'm 57!! Not that I've had a Sunday lunch every week, for the past 57 years...but I've had a fair few in my time. We were welcomed by i believe the owner/ manager , who explained they were running on a minimum of staff and they would endeavour to do their best to serve us as soon as they could. In these post Covid days, we nodded in approvement and sat patiently. We perused the menu and before long our food and drink orders were taken. Drinks arrived 5 minutes later, 15 minutes later the food arrived....and well worth the wait.. Admittedly the Chicken portion wasn't particularly big ...but, to be honest, I was thankful for it. It was absolutely delicious... soooo flavoursome! There were vegeatables gallore, lashings of gravy... all in all, a post lockdown epiphany 👌 Try it for yourselfs... take your dog too, if you like 👍You will not regret it, trust me 😉1
L. H.
Great pints and good atmosphere
A. c.
Food was good, although portions were small. They accept dogs which is great and they also gave my dog water, which I appreciate! They were very kind to my dog so 5*s. Also the staff are nice in general :)
J. M.
Nice bar very pricey for food and drink but good food
K. J.
One of the best pubs in Newcastle
J. M.
One of the best bars in Newcastle, I always try to visit when I'm in town , great food and a good selection of wine , things have changed due to covid in regards to atmosphere but still one of the best places to eat and drink
L. W.
Nice bar and good priced for a city centre bar
A.
This is a lovely, cosy pub with friendly staff. Meals are quite nice too. I've been here on my own for a bit of peace and quiet when studying and also visited in a group. Either way I've always found it a pleasant experience.
A. 6.
Nice quality meal.
A bit pricey for midday lunch. However, portion was large.
P. R.
Whenever we are in town our first port of call is the City Tavern. The atmosphere is very calm and welcoming. Fantastic range of gins and beer. Food is very good. Laurel and Hardy on the television. What more could you ask for. Great.
E. J.
First time we have visited and were pleasantly suprised on what we found inside. We found a seat upstairs in what we were told was the library. The man serving us 'reciept said PJ' was very attentive, funny and a delight to talk to. It was very busy but nothing was too much hassle. Food and drinks were fantastic. Beautiful decor and relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be back again.
s. W.
Nice beer garden descent range of brinks. Never too bizzy so you don't have cue for ever
D. M.
Great pub .very traditional and a good pint of ale friendly staff also.the owner has done amazing revamping the place ie the courtyard just to get customers back in .what a top bloke and freindly.
J. A.
Really great traditional pub in the heart of the city centre. Great food, great beers (and spirits) and they welcome dogs as well. Really great local for anyone city centre based or a good stop off if you're visiting.
A. h.
Very nice place murphys stout yes
M. C.
This place has been around in one shape or another for years, and it’s a decent enough joint for a couple of town drinks or pre/post-match beers.
Good selection of Gin on right now (February 2018) and some canny cask ales too.
Only had a couple of jars myself before heading elsewhere, but the atmosphere was pretty good... all a bit sporty too (rugby match on telly).
C.
Nice pub good well priced food and friendly helpful smiling staff. Worth a visit.
Not in Newcastle often so had to pop in for lunch. Fish & Chips was lovely.
J. M.
Spot on, cosy , very traditional, lots of room , proper hidden gem
A. J.
Atmospheric pub in the city centre. Serves delicious food at a reasonable price. Wide selection of beers, including local brews. Good choice of gins and spirits as well.
J. C.
Amazing food, great service, def be going back
D. M.
The bar tenders are amazing here, they had lots of good gin and they made the experience amazing. The food it good, I was here for an event and they had different meat pies and other pub food. great hospitality!
C. H.
We organised a group meal for restaurant week which city tavern were taking part of, and every single one of us enioyed ourselves. The food was outstanding, I personally had the chicken cacciatore (hope that is spelled correctly) and the chicken was so perfectly cooked and the sauce had a beautiful kick to it. The drinks menu is so vast and varied and the people behind the bar, especially Pj knows exactly how to pair drinks up and what suggestions to make depending on what you like. The staff on duty were so friendly and came across so happy and personable.
We regularly have breakfast meet ups here and I have never known a place with more inclusive wonderful staff who go the extra mile every time. I can't wait to come back! Thanks city tavern
J.
First time in after wanting to visit for a while. Immediately impressed by fantastic decor, friendly welcome and good choice of drinks. The place has a really warm and inviting atmosphere and the menu looks incredible. Will definitely be back to sample.
S. R.
Excellent pub food, will definitely eat here again 👍
K. F.
Good range of drinks, food was nice but found a couple of hairs in the burger which was a bit off putting ...
Y. S.
Friendly staffs, good food(roasted veg superb). Very chilled atmosphere
N. W.
The bar tenders are amazing here, they had lots of good gin and they made the experience amazing. The food it good, I was here for an event and they had different meat pies and other pub food. great hospitality!

Fab place. Excellent food
S. H.
Great place for food and drinks with friendly, polite and professional team of staff. Well organised for Covid-19 and now they have the outdoor area too. Always visit when in Newcastle.
G. R.
Enjoyed a great Sunday lunch at the City Tavern, friendly welcoming staff, food was excellent and probably the best pub Sunday Lunch Ive had in a long time. Good choice of real ales all kept well, good value for money and decent prices. We will return!
Q. T.
Ideal spot for food in tha Toon. Great service and a good selection of pub grub favourites, including more veggie and vegan offerings than most. Beer price is a little higher than most city pubs, but the atmosphere is very relaxed and easy going. I'll be back.
M. C.
Absolutely love this pub, excellent gluten free Menu, Dog friendly pub in the middle of the city Centre. They have a great wine'0 clock deal 😉. .
City Tavern is also an excellent wedding venue!
D. T.
Amazing atmosphere, the staff are very friendly and the food is delicious! It's very well designed and the interior gives a very homely feel 5 stars cant wait to go back again once I'm in the UK
J. H.
I would like to thank Dave and all his staff who were involved in the organisation of my recent birthday bash. Top class food & venue, which has recently been refurbished to a high standard, all the staff take great pride intheir customer service, good selection of real ales, which resulted in all attending having a great night out

It's a lovely place to have a drink. My daughter had her engagement party there in a cordoned off upstairs room... very pleased with the venue.
L. W.
My dad got married in this venue during the pandemic. The building is stunning and the staff could not have done more to help make their day special 🥰
H. J.
Great atmosphere and just like the TARDIS it's Bigger on the inside
J. C.
Real beer great service

This is 3rd time here for Sunday lunch first time was nice second time we again had beef which was tough nd not slices just a piece of meat. Tried again this time had pork which was supposed to have crackling, it came was soft and unedible nd was raw texture to it gravy was watery lija an oxo cube red cabbage was best part about it Yorkshire were nice turnip was vinegar just dreadfully. I did complain and were offered free deserts which were lovely and got our money back. Wouldn't retun for a meal .Nice decor comfortable nd dog friendly
N. D. B.
Fabulous bar. Friendly staff and the food is amazing. If you're in or around Newcastle upon Tyne, this place should definitely be on your list of places to go to eat.
G. P.
Love this place. Visit everytime we are in Newcastle. Great value food and drink.
A. S.
Love this place! Amazing food, large variety of drinks and nice staff! What else to ask for?!
C. S.
Lovely meal very good service from all the staff and very friendly. Only down side - where we were sitting was quite cold. Would go back though. Thank you x
A. G.
Good drink and food selection
Staff are always cheerful and helpful.
Only reason for 4 instead of 5 is the inexplicably high drink prices (food is reasonable).
Despite that it doesn't stop me going regularly!
S. B.
Fabulous pub in the centre of Newcastle. Excellent food great portion sizes and a good selection of beer! Fabulous Decor of an era gone by. Love this place!
C. B.
Not my first visit. Lovely beer with great service.
M. C.
Nice staff and good selection of drinks and food. Clean
g. b. b.
Lovely time during these times of covid, 1st class service from arrival. Magnificent food, brilliant service throughout. Can't fault the place. 👍
H. B.
Food was great, staff were friendly, decor in the bar is brilliant. Wine deal is excellent too.
C. C.
Lovely atmosphere. Drinks can be a bit pricey but I dontind as it's a nice place to go especially if you fancy a bite to eat
T. U.
Good pub. Wide range of craft beers. Good scran.
K. L.
Pleasant surroundings & very friendly
A. K.
Very good food and great how dog friendly they are
W. S.
The bar was busy as most customers were using it as a pit stop on there way to City Hall, bar staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, barman who served us had a black eye, hopefully not work related, good atmosphere, prices were a bit expensive hence 4 star rating
s.
This was a great bar in the 70s and is even better now.
T. O.
Good little spot which welcomes dogs and has quite a quirky atmosphere.
C. t.
Great little boozer. Excellent choice of beverages and great Real Ale. And it's the best for me and my favourite companion to sup beer. (That being my retriever). Cheers
L. C.
Good food, great service, nice surroundings and a reasonable price for a city centre place. Plus dogs are welcome. What's not to like?
K. W.
Lovely cosy but modern pub, a refreshing selection of beers and 60 gins to choose from, cocktails are amazing and not watered down
M. L.
Great setting and always a good atmosphere, pricing mind
i. 6.
Visited on Sunday & although there where no tables available inside we were given a table in the beer garden.
A good selection of beers & draft ales.
M. M.
This has consumed a few pubs at used to be in this site. We were in the offshore part, new bar, but interior has remained largely untouched. Has big menu of smoked and bbq meats with sides available. Also a few ales.
J. G.
This central located pub in Newcastle is well worth a visit. There is a very good range of beer and the ambiance is both relaxed and informal.
S. T.
Went there for the first time since moving to Newcastle. Awesome place and lovely staff.
C. F.
Lovely food, great service and dog friendly. Good selection of real ales. One of my favourite places.
C. S.
Decent selection of beers accompanied by a vast array of gins. I haven't eaten here hi I would like to try and the bar menu and Tapas sounds really nice.
C. 0.
Great couple of hours owing to the new set up. Felt really safe and comfortable. First outing si ce March. Thank you, see you soon.
D. M.
I like this bar. It's always heaving! Good selection of drinks. Bit pricey but not extortionate. My usual choice when it comes to pre-show drinks visiting Newcastle City Hall.
S. C.
Ok but ask for a martini and as they didn't stock it was offered the equivalent. Tasted like sherry so won't be getting that again. On the plus side dogs and children are welcome.
S. M.
Lovely decor and staff, slightly higher prices but you're in Central Newcastle so what you'd expect. Better for Gin, Rum, cocktails and wine rather than beer
P. R.
Excellent service, really friendly and a cracking pint. Love the decor here, feels like a proper pub yet very stylish.
C. F. L.
Favourite pub in the town, a real gem, staff are lovely, food is excellent, drink variety is great if a little expensive. Worth it though.
R. T.
Fantastic food just love this place. Most important dog friendly. The chap serving a beard very helpful.
s. e.
2 good meals but spoilt as we're not told to buy 2 glasses of wine to get rest free in Happy Hour so ended up paying £4 more for bottle. That was a real shame
G.
Violet martinis are an absolute dream! Lager is expensive, a la carte only ok. Sandwiches are good price and tasty, a go to for us
m. h.
What a beautiful bar, especially the upper floor. Food amazing.. Plenty of vegetarian choice. The Vege Fish and Chips was amazing. Check it out. You will love it.

Spent few days in Newcastle with my partner & Bailey our dog
Looking for dog friendly places to eat etc! Lovely place food great & owner & staff made us especially Bailey very welcome
Would visit again great
R. C.
Good food. Great service. Good atmosphere
S. S.
We had our wedding reception here, free reign of the whole top floor. The staff are great, the food was excellent and a great choice of drinks
R. R. (.
I love this place, if you want a quiet pint, great staff in a nice enviroment then give it a try, the pints are pricey but id rather pay it and avoid idiots.
T. d. G.
Although stuffed away in a small alley, this pub is a hidden gem! It's way bigger on the inside then you would expect on the outside. Very fancy!
P. N.
I've been a few times now. I like decor, location and the food is delicious (vegetarian options available). Plus they serve mulled wine in the winter :-)
C. v. d. L.
Dog friendly and an every changing great selection of guest ales and their own ale on. Standing area in front of downstairs bar can get very crowded on busy nights.
C. R.
All CoVid protocols in place. Welcoming staff and great service. Oh, and a great selection of beers!!
E. S.
A really lovely pub that I almostnever go to because it’s ridiculously expensive. If the prices were more reasonable I would go a lot as it really is great inside.
K. S.
Decent pint. Nice enough decor. Wierd smell at one end of the bar. Smells a bit like the toilet or worse. Apart from that, nice place.
M. T.
The drinks here are very expensive £10.20 for 4 halves of Amstel lager The pub itself is nice but for some reason they had turned off the heating and it was cold, for this reason it's not a place I would rush back to but it was nice catching up with friends.
A. F.
Incredible decor and attentive, welcoming staff. Excellent food. Well worth a visit.
M. L.
Great location, interesting decor, friendly welcoming staff, inexpensive varied menu in what feels like a modern surround. However l used to go there in the 70's!
B. M.
Not impressed with Sunday lunch poor choice of veg and green beans not cooked properly
G. D.
Awesome food, great prices, great gin/cocktail/beer/spirit menu, 10 min walk from train station and beside some great shopping went for an hour spent all afternoon
S. B.
Superb place to have a drink.. looks normal and small on the outside but opens up into a good size bar, also serves food.
T. S.
The prices are high and the portions are rather small, but the staff is friendly and it's great if you have a dog. The food is excellent.
C. J.
Lovely place for day meals and a great selection behind the bar, deceivingly large place which is very popular, beautiful decor and friendly staff, we visit regularly
F. K.
Love it, cool wee place, decent rums on site, yaaaaarrrr
L. B. B.
Great food , by nephew is a fish and chip conniseur and said they were some of the best he'd ever had 🍽 The cheese and home made pate is to die for and what's more one of the only dog friendly good food pubs in Newcastle.. We will all be back soon.👍😃
S. D.
I feel sorry for City Tavern, the scran is great, they're incredibly accommodating to food allergies, the management are absolutely spot on, but they got a bit of bad press a year ago because some adults masquerading as children in the from of 'goths' were asked to leave (if the staff at the time were anti-Goth, how come one of them used to wear a leather trenchcoat in school).
Their rating is far too low for such a hidden gem
L. M.
The food is so lovely!! Homemade and tastes fresh. Staff are really nice! The pub is well designed!
G. N.
Friendly and helpful staff. Well kept beer and decent choice plus a huge gin menu.
A. S.
Nice place, lots of room, big portions, thoroughly enjoyed the veggie burger and fish and chips, they also have an outside area, it's slightly expensive though

H.
Lovely pub. Shame you've taken free range chicken off the menu though. Unless I was just being blind!
C. M.
Lovely atmosphere, very well kept and a lot of seating. Fairly reasonably priced too
J. M.
Nice pub with a definite leaning towards hipster sensibilities (moustache stencils in the bathroom? Really?) but at a fiver - or more - a pint, it's very much on the expensive side for Newcastle!
J. O.
What a great refurbishment this has been, fantastic decor, good food, great beers. Not the cheapest in toon but one of the best.
d. m.
Leaving do, friendly staff and really clean. Lovely little place, little outside balcony for smokers and vapers would highly recommend.
