Reviews of Gunner Tavern
D. M.
Done a lovely job of renovating from what used to be here, now it's a good mix of wood panelling and some more modern furniture. A mix of different seating options inside and out. A few different beers on from both big breweries and better craft options. A few cask options too which was good to see. Food was nice, perhaps a little on the expensive side but it was good quality. Handy for the train station too.
B. P.
Went during the day so not sure what it's like at night. Had some food and drinks. Food was good and portion size was enough to fill. Prices reasonable for the area
P. R.
Great pub with a good selection of ale and spirits. Had 80’s tunes on when I was there . Very reasonably priced £3.80 for fosters. Not tried the food but menu lacked veggie options
S. N.
Staff were really sweet, talked to almost everyone who was on shift at that time and they were all so nice! Food was good, we couldn’t finish the sharer between two people, might be made for 3-4; cocktails were good as well, especially their own rendition of the Bloody Mary
S. B.
I absolutely love this pub .. safe for a woman to go drinking alone (yes alone so please ladies don’t fret ok) .. staff are super friendly and I have the best time ever in this place … me and my mates come in here at least twice a month and I myself come in on my own … honest .. this place rocks … superb atmosphere … come on ladies .. come join me next time 🫣
J. W.
Not a bad pub. Friendly staff. Just a bit dark.
C. M.
A great spot opposite the train station. Great beer and gin selection as well as a good cocktail menu including specials.
Stand out is the food though. Potentially the best roast in the city, chicken schwarma with fresh made flat breads and the widest sausage roll in the toon
P. E.
Nicely done out. Kid and dog friendly. Nicely spread out, not too many tables packed in. We had Sunday lunch, the roast was pretty big in spite of being a kid's portion. Very clean throughout. All of the food was well done and reasonably priced. It did take a while to come out, easily long enough to be sure it wasn't just being microwaved but to the point where you're looking round to see if it is coming.
w. B.
Great atmosphere! Decor and the vibe is amazing and it was a quick after work pit stop so I can't wait to come back at weekend 👌👍
b. t.
Nice bar, lots of high tables and sofas.
Lovely decor.
Subtle lighting with a warm feeling.
Lots of ales on tap.
The Stella was spot on and well priced for the city centre
M. M.
There was a crowd of 11 of us wandering through town after getting some food, looking for a nice place to get a few post dinner drinks, and wandered passed The Gunner. We thought we would give it a try, so we wandered in. luckily, there was a big table beside the window that was empty, so we grabbed that. The service was fine, the drinks reasonably priced for town, and the toilets clean and tidy. The music as decent and played at a reasonable volume, so that it didn’t interfere with conversation. there is a photo booth upstairs if you fancy a photo with a significant other! :)
E. B.
Popped in for some drinks and food which took a while to come, and then found a hair in my chicken wings; the manager insisted it was part of the chicken and was a bit overbearing/intimidating. We got drinks for the inconvenience but only because my boyfriend wouldn't be bullied. Otherwise a good atmosphere
D. G.
Liked this place, felt classy and some nice beers on. Decent selection from crafts to your classics.
L. F.
Pub is lovely staff r really nice
Sunday lunch not impressed at all for the price wot I received...
But the manager was really nice and refunded my money
But unfortunately I still havnt received it yet
Lovely little sun spot 👌
I. B.
Nice bar, but tables and seats were sticky, food not great.
k. s.
Lovely pub near the station to have a drink outside and meet my student son.
S. P.
Great pub, really nicely refurbished. Good selection of beers and not badly priced for central Newcastle.
J. “. P.
Great atmosphere, cheap drinks and check out the bathroom doors they have some real history to them.
C. D.
Really great pub! Fantastic food and a great menu. Staff also really good and friendly.
K. I. C.
Great selection of music.
.reasonable price for drinks too.
J. F.
What a treat!!! straight off the train and into the tavern. Had a lovely thai red curry, a generous amount of chicken and the perfect amount of spice. The interior is spacious and the staff are welcoming with great craft knowledge!
B. S.
Farewell Gotham, the scene of great music, many horrific dance moves as you would struggle to lift your feet from the sticky floor, pathetic chat up lines that spawned many happy unions and treble house vodkas for £3 that contributed to some of the worst lingering, near death experience hangovers endured throughout my youth.
If the 80s disco bar Flares was an absent parent with a red headed stepchild, Gotham would have been said neglected youngster, cowering in the corner waiting for the sun to go down.
Now that Gotham has grown up and fled along with the 2 gallon bottles of vodka that were freshly brewed the day before in someone's bath, we have the Gunner Tavern.
As I had not realised Gotham had gone, it was certainly a pleasant surprise when we wandered in here.
It has indeed undergone a smart makeover with a wide variety of ales on offer in an airy, well lit, clean atmosphere hosting a good crowd of decent people. The owners have thrown a lot of money bringing the place up to scratch.
My (albeit brief) visit to the Gunner Tavern was like having a night out with a sensible mate who dresses in smart cardigans, likes to talk about architecture and rugby then heads home at 9.30 pm after 3 pints. He's no bother, rather lovely in fact. Just a bit boring.
C. D. (.
Lovely food, lovely drink, lovely staff and lovely service highly recommended to anyone who's in the area
J. “. M.
Don't let the outside fool you. This bar is excellent. They accommodated our large party on a long table for drinks n food on the afternoon of Euros final. Really friendly staff and a brilliant Thai curry. Awesome interior fit out. 10/10 all round.
p. r.
Used to drink here when it was Gotham Town. Good crowd in pre match, didn't need my Covid19 mask for the toilets & 2 pints of lager, pint of John Smith's & bottle of Bud £17 so well happy!
G. G.
Gunners is always lively, especially after dark. Never seen the place empty, and for good reason.
J. N.
Very pleasant afternoon good choice of drinks and staff are polite and professional. Good location for the train station and the city centre. Nice ambiance watching the world go by. Definitely recommend a visit.
A. M.
Friendly pub great atmosphere, lovely cold beer well priced, will be going again.
S. K.
Popped in for a couple drinks, with family and it's a really nice reworking of Gotham. No sticking to the floor, it's full of light and great designs. The staff were quick and responsive. A good night in a great place.
A. T.
Great pub and atmosphere with good selection of beers
I. F.
Lovely beers, canny team.
T. A.
Lovely bar with a great atmosphere and lovely decor. Felt comfortable. Plenty choice of drinks. Will definitely try again when in the area.
P. C.
Great atmosphere, good selection of lagers! Would definitely recommend 👌
M. S.
Great friendly atmosphere with a good selection of beers and spirits

Had sunday roast beef meal...not very warm at all. Staff nice
k. S.
I sat outside, there was 1 other person there that had been served at the table.
As no one came out to take our order I stood at the door to place a drinks order, a blonde lady came over to seat me inside, I said I was sitting outside and wanted to order drinks. She said I'm sorry no one's allowed to sit outside as they don't have the staff, this was at 5pm on a Friday afternoon and I knew within 30 mins the outside tables would be full. I wanted to place a drinks order at the bar and was turned away.
I sat outside and told my friend, the other guy who'd already been served outside was shocked. we just sat there for another 15 mins wondering where else to go before a friendly brunette came and took our order. She was really friendly and brought us water for my dog too.
She always made sure our drinks were never empty and couldn't have done more for us.
Terrible customer service from the blond lady but the brunette made up for it so I would go again. We were drinking double malt scotches and the rounds came to 12 quid which was a good price.
M. A.
I still can’t believe this place used to be Gotham Town!
Gunpowder IPA is superb!
o. b.
Was better as Gotham has Lost its old school charm
T. J.
The establishment has been beautifully refurbished. I do miss the sticky carpets of Gotham
E. B.
Good pub, with nice food and a very good selection of beers. If you're have Kasteel Rouge on tap, AND you're serving it in the correct glass, then you're doing it right!
G. H.
Excellent choice of drinks and a great place to meet friends
A. K.
Comfortable pub good selection of drinks can be a bit pricey
C. G.
Nice menu good beer and nice atmosphere
D. L.
Loved this place! Just coming out of the pandemic not many people in (weekday afternoon). Love the inside and, due to a heatwave, we sat outside which was great for people watching while chatting and, apparently barbecuing my face in direct sunlight. Only issue was table was on a slant and due to cider overspill being on the bottom of the glass, the pint decided to act as a Darlek and go walkies while I was boring .. er ... fascinating my friends with a story, causing the glass to attempt a daring escape off the edge of the table. Big mistake! A full pint now trickling toward the central station and pair of Tesco "jogger feel" trousers - I know, I don't know what that means either - soaked. A bit miffed that payment was required for the replacement even when highlighting the overspill on the bottom of the glass made it move slicker and quicker than Christopher Dean going to grab Jayne Torvill's ankle. Nevertheless, still rate the place highly.
P. B.
Spoilt it since draining the p*ss lake in the toilets when it was Gotham
J. W.
Excellent choice if beers, ales and IPA. Sitting area outside opposite Newcastle Central Station. Food tasty for snacks or main meals. Staff friendly and knowledgeable
P. H.
Highly recommended if you like your cask and keg ales
N. I.
Great bar following the refurbishment. Location right next to central station so ideal for a night out or just a meal out in Newcastle. Very good range of different beers/ciders with some quirky types I haven't seen anywhere else. Had a grapefruit beer which was very nice. Prices actually quite reasonable despite the wierd flavours. Food was nice too 👍
J. M.
Party of 6 of us went for Sunday lunch and couldn't fault it. So reasonably priced and the food was great. Solid visit and I would absolutely go again.
C. 9.
They do great food and are dog friendly 🍔
C.
We've been here a few times for a cheeky beer and it's great for that. We've eaten here twice and I'm not sure we will again. I ordered chicken which had just that too much pink. I ate around it. Second time we had a sharing platter. It was ok I guess.
j. b.
It's been almost a year since I was in the gunner tavern and now that they have opened the outside area they area great. If you need a drink to your table they are happy to bring them over and they have card service. I'm sure the service will be just as good when it's back to pre-covid times 🤘🤘🤘
R. B.
Fantastic! I love what they have done to the place and still kept some of the old Gotham charm. The food was fantastic and staff great! Shout out to George who made us really welcome and provided fab service! His knowledge of the menu was great and he advised us of some extras to try. The homemade BBQ sauce is fantastic. Love how dog friendly this place is! We will be back.
T. W.
Went here last week for some food and drinks after work. Service was absolutely fantastic, atmosphere in the place was fantastic, such a far cry from what it used to be when it was Gotham Town. The natural light coming into the place really made it feel warm and welcoming. As for the food it was absolutely fantastic, chicken was really juicy and flavourful and cooked to perfection. Chips felt like proper crispy fluffy home made chips, could have eaten a bucketful.
Really nice and enjoyable place to go
A. C.
Very nice
C. H.
Good beer selection, nice decor and atmosphere
J. R.
A new addition to the vibe here. Formerly a highly popular dive bar that did it's graft and shut up shop. This place is way more asthetically pleasing. Not a budget bar for sure, so come coined up ready. There's outdoor seating up front for our lacklustre summer months, but the passing scenery can be tremendous if you take it up. I think it could do well indeed.
T. C.
Great choice of draught, friendly atmosphere, very cool and comfortable furniture.
B. T.
Good selection of beer and good bar snacks. The sausage roll was excellent. Accommodated 7 of us at short notice for a drink without any hassle. Good atmosphere.
D. C.
Great, friendly city bar.
S. L.
Great selection of food and drinks - had the Ploughmans board and it was excellent.
J. S.
Nice layout with plenty of space. Decent range of beers and lagers. Food looked great but didn't really deliver on taste, being a bit bland. I'll go again but just for a drink
s. t.
It is a really amazing pub.
I visited it with my sister for lunch and we were stunned.
The food there was amazing and I enjoyed every each course that I ordered. The staff was very polite and friendly and willing. The atmosphere is also very nice. It's sure that we're going to visit again soon. I definitely recommend this place.
B. M.
This place is amazing. Only came for a sit down and a drink but the waitress Siobhan has been so amazing and accommodating that 1 drink ended up turning into 6 hours. The drinks are amazing and would come back here again. 5 stars to Siobhan for her service and friendliness
E. A.
Food was amazing. Had the spit roast meat sharing platter. Great value. Staff were lovely.
D. S.
A great new addition to the Central station/ Pink lane area of the town. Good selection of cask and Keg beers and ales. Nice staff. Food looks nice ( haven't partaken.. .yet!) Dog friendly too 🐶🐕
A.
Quick visit for 1 drink, nice inside, staff friendly. Great location, handy for train station
D. T.
Too expensive, but not rough and open late so...
a. h.
Absolutely brilliant atmosphere and staff. We’ll be coming back, me and my fiancé expect this hospitality. The bartender/server Sam (with the blonde hair), deserves a knighthood with the service he gave, absolute topman, proper gentleman. Definitely come to the Gunner! Worth every penny!
P. M.
Airy sunny aspect, with friendly staff, outdoor seating, good sunday roast lunches.
S. S.
Great vibrant bar in the heart ❤ of Newcastle
Class. Great selection of beers 🍻
Friendly staff
R. M. (.
Attentive, friendly staff.
Beer isn't bad, meals looked ok, but never tried them this time.
Have been in pricier pubs.
All in all, we should return. But it's not a given.
D.
Popped in for a couple of quick drinks here on Sunday afternoon and was very pleasantly surprised. The new decor looks great and there was a really nice relaxed mellow atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
C. S.
Went for restaurant week crate and although there was a good amount of food and dessert for 15 quid, I found the service poor. it was busy and it was restaurant week however, it was only 6pm and some of the female staff just felt like they didnt want to be there! Also I can't forgive cold sweetcorn! Nobody asked how the meal was until we'd all eaten, I couldn't be bothered queueing again to complain about my cold sweetcorn as we had to go to the main bar to order when they actually have a POS upstairs near the tables! Unfortunately I left the corn. We had to ask for cutlery and sauce too! The food tasted nice and was well cooked (apart from my sweetcorn) but I think I'll give somewhere else a try next time. Sorry gunner. This place is much nicer than Gotham and is well kitted out. There are loads of nice draft beers (not the cheapest) but worth it. I'll Definetly be back for a drink.
a. g.
Excellent selection of beer, great cocktails and friendly staff, all in all a great bar.
C. M.
Looked forward to trying this place out after it was essentially a no-go area when it was Gotham (for the reasons of being filthy, bad drinks, basic knuckle-dragging clientele, etc). The place looks really good, has that gorgeous fresh wood smell, and the staff are lovely and friendly. They're getting to grips with a new place, so give them a break.
The food was... OK? There are things advertised as sandwiches that aren't sandwiches cos you can't even pick them up. They're slathered in sauce or mayo so you're forced to eat them with a knife and fork, and NO geordie eats a sandwich with a knife and fork which makes me think the place is run by some jumped up southerner who thinks that's ok.
Final word on this is the clientele who were there when I was there. Still loud, still *overwhelmingly* laddish, which I don't think you'll be able to get away from when you're near the station (to be fair to them though, it was a match day). So whilst it's lovely on design, I give it 2 months before the louts trash it and it'll be back to *basics*.
s. o.
Great location, good range of drink, tad pricey and lots of beggers rough kinds outside, could use a bouncer!
B. H.
Ok, service slow.
Difficult to catch the eye of the bar staff.
Convenient, opposite the station.
Heineken or Moretti, that's your choice.

Visited Sunday 25th August 2019 at 11:30.
Gorgeous refurb. Much much better than the dated Gotham Town. Sunday dinner was lush, tasted proper home made, not the usual microwaved fodder, AND we got served it early as we had a train to catch. Which was kind of the staff. (Serving usually starts at noon apparently. We didn't know.) My Salted Caramel Espresso Martini was amazing. Guy clearing tables was upbeat, chatty and welcoming. The huge bi-fold windows were open as it was a gorgeous day and the bar was bright clean and fresh feeling. An all 'round good first visit since the changes. 🙂
(Our only small gripes, which notched one star off the review, were that the dark haired bearded barman thought nothing of swearing infront of us while we waited to be served and the barmaid who served us who seemed entirely bored to be there).
C. B.
Il be honest I was one of the Gotham fan boys saying they would never come but then I found out it was dog friendly and thought I would give it a try.The food was great the venue it self is both clean and comfortable and it's got a nice chill vibe.
The staff were all great but without a doubt George made the experience he went above and beyond with his customer service. Would definitely come here again.
D. D.
Great service. Sunday lunch best of 2020. Great meat. Top drawer gravy. Smashing veg. Creamy mash. Bang on yorkshire.
T. E.
Love what they have done with the place, only visited the old Gotham Town once but I definitely prefer it now. Their house ale, Gunpowder IPA is probably the best house ale I've ever had.
s. f.
Nice place, but very expensive... Bring back Gotham
D. B.
Tastefully decorated pub serving a wide range of premium beers lagers and spirits. Slightly pricey but you get what you pay for. Becoming a regular haunt now 😁
C. F. L.
Totally different from the old Gotham Town and much more up market. Food not to my taste but friends loved it. Staff are friendly, prices a little high but worth it for the atmosphere.
M. W.

J. R.
Trendy place, good service and social distancing practiced well.
F. A.
I was told it was good - and it was. Welcoming atmosphere, perfectly served drink but the best bit was the chat with the bar staff and sample of a new drink. Thank you
S.
Nice pub. As good as Gotham used to be...
A. R.
Pretty dark and slightly sticky but it runs a fairly wide ranging beer selection.
D. T.
Loved this bar. Staff lovely and able to chill and enjoy drink
I. B.
All refub and furnishings aside (To be fair if you're a visitor here you won't know the sticky floor and clammy personality of the last place) There's not much more to it.. My entrance was met with a dirty look from the one or two of the staff.. Which continues with bored looks... Even my food was served with mumble... Although they're seen happy when taking to each other.. Bless em... Newcastle has friendlier places so don't be all judgey if this is the first place you get to off the train..... The food.. There's good reviews on here... I'm not so sure... But then I didn't eat the entire menu.. Half a chicken in hot sauce... Not something I would return to.. Not hot.. Not much chicken.. Not much going on... Which is my experience with this place.. Not much going on... Shame.. Because it looks the part
G. M.
Great pub snacks. Scotch eggs with runny yolks yum! Also the barman made us a nice selection of espresso martinis.
S. R.
Excellent selection of beers on every time I've been in. Came in on a friday and music maybe a little loud for the style of venue but good music and the hipster DJ used vinyl 5/5
P. T.
Some very good cask beer, nice atmosphere
