Reviews of Lion & Lamb Inn
J. k. (.
😋😋😋😋
We went for my birthday Sunday lunch and weren't disappointed.
Staff were very friendly, we were shown to our table and drinks orders were taken, after 5 or 10 mins the waiter returned to see if we were ready to order, yes please.
I went for a monkfish stater, having never had monkfish I was thoroughly impressed, decent chunks cooked in bread crumbs and served with tartar sauce and samphire, delicious.
I opted for beef (pink) for my main which was beautiful, served with roasties, greens (leek, cabbage, green beans) and the biggest Yorkshire pudding I've ever seen.
I'd thoroughly recommend giving this place a try if you like good food.
There's a few negative reviews on hear relating to the management, many are written years ago and I know the place has recently been taken over so I'd ignore these comments and give it a go, we had a great time and will definitely be back.
Oh there's a decent sized garden with a small play park for the kids too.
C. A.
Absolutely wonderful, food extremely good, service exceptional, highly recommend.
Outdoor area very good, inside is very well laid out and very comfortable, would definitely return.

We have been going here for Sunday lunch for years and have always enjoyed. Went recently, first time since pandemic, and a lot has changed. A big price increase, £26 for 2 courses and they are now more dog friendly.
That's fine if dogs are quiet and unobtrusive but when staff are openly petting dogs between
serving food and drink it is very off putting. 2 members of staff petted dogs in the restaurant and continued to serve food and drinks. I pray they washed their hands however not confident!
G. R.
Great to to see one of my favourite places for Sunday Lunch still serving top notch food. It’s famous for the roast leg of lamb and it did not disappoint 10/10! Great service from the waitresses. Can’t wait to go back soon!

I've been here a few times and have had mixed experiences each time. Once was amazing, ordered the fish sharing platter and it was divine. The service was impeccable and all in all I was very impressed. The next time I brought my husband for lunch and it was dire. They got the orders wrong so many times, the starters were wrong, the lobster came without any garlic butter (the steak was beautifully cooked however) our child order came out wrong, the wrong dessert was brought out so they had to go and do the right one. It was clearly an off day for the kitchen but given that we were the first people in on a very quiet lunch service I wonder how they got it so wrong. Other reviews say this place is very good, so again, how did they get it so wrong for us?
I often think to revisit here based on my first few visits, and then change my mind as the most recent lunch really put me off and I can't afford in excess of £100 for a lunch experience that is pretty poor.
J. B.
I'm basing my 5* rating on visits made to this pub before lockdown. What I loved about it was the amazing menu which was head and shoulders above regular pub offerings in its interesting additions and flavours. Everything I'd tried was delicious and even their club sandwich - my favourite lunchtime choice, and excellent value - was not something you'd find at most pubs.
When we went for Monday lunch at the beginning of August, we took advantage of the Eat Out scheme to almost halve our bill.
The menu that day was very prosaic pub food which I found forgivable under the circumstances, but disappointing because it's not what I choose Lion & Lamb for. Having said that, the food we were served was tasty and beautifully presented. Just not my first choice.
We were able to eat outside as there's a large number of tables outdoors, complete with umbrellas for when it's too sunny.
Without my previous experiences, I'd probably have rated it 5* anyway, because I'd not have known what I was missing. But I sincerely hope that they'll be able to go back to their regular menu before too long.

Fantastic food and lovely pub come bar. Staff fantastic Tracey the manager she made us feel so welcome can't wait to go back .
T. M.
A fantastic country pub great food good beer and very friendly staff. The porsions are of good size and good quality, If you were going for Sunday lunch it would be advisable to book as they get very busy and have to turn people away. The views from the garden across the Tyne valley are spectacular they have a good size beer garden with play area for the children. It's that nice we have booked for a family meal in the run up to Christmas
J. W.
A perfect experience. Beautiful rooms, fantastic food, and wonderful service. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We recently visited the Lion & Lamb for a special family Sunday lunch. We were a large party aged 7 months to 70 years, and a dog!. The whole meal was fantastic from start to finish. The portion sizes were amazing, but quality was not overlooked as is so often the case. The whole team were friendly, attentive in their service and really accommodating, even preparing some basic steamed veg for our baby. My nephew loved the outdoor play area, and we're looking forward to returning this summer and making use of the beer garden and the lovely views. Well done Lion & Lamb, we are excited to return!
G. T.
Stunningly beautiful country gastro pub. Gourmet type menu. Not your usual pub grub. Food excellent. Service excellent. A little more expensive than most (not all) other pubs in the area. Well worth a visit for something different.
S. E.
Amazing Christmas lunch. Excellent service, lovely atmosphere. Cant fault it at all 👍👍👍👍👍 …
J. S.
We called in yesterday for food after a long dog walk. The staff were lovely and food was delicious. Would definitely recommend 👌 …
P. H.
Just had an amazing Sunday lunch here - food was gorgeous - service great - staff very efficient & friendly. Definitely recommend it.
D. C.
Great food and service, made to feel welcome and a lovely atmosphere. Recommended.
M. W.
Really lovely pub, so much character inside and a cracking outdoor area. The perfect place to stop in any weather. Being good Friday we all had fish and chips, nice meaty cod, crispy batter and the sides were so moreish. You can tell the chef is passionate about producing good quality plates. It’s a must stop in Northumberland!
A. M.
Absolutely amazing food, been 3 times now and never disappointed.
C. H.
Back to normal the place went really poor now back on track been there a few times really nice restaurant to eat

Update 15th Dec 2022:
The place is still excellent, with lovely, friendly staff, a cozy vibe with a log-burning fireplace, and delicious, fancy-but-not-pretentious food, cooked perfectly. Go here. You'll love it :)
Original review:
Just had a gorgeous Sunday roast here, followed by a cafetiere of coffee for two, which was perfectly strong, and the best coffee I've had out in months and months. The place itself is very cosy, and we were sat opposite a lovely wood fire.
L. P.
Absolutly best meal we have had a while. Attentive staff. Lovely feel to the place.
T. F.
Just eaten the most delicious Sunday lamb roast. It was perfection, the side order of cauliflower cheese that was recommended did not disappoint, the whole meal was sublime. Happy to recommend, still sat enjoying our drinks, what wonderful staff.
J. W.
We had an excellent family meal over the holiday weekend. The food was excellent and the service and attentive waiter were first class. Excellent thank you.
S. A.
First meal there and l loved it . The service was great. Will absolutely be going back.
A. M.
I'd been meaning to try this pub in Horsley, opposite The Hearth, one of regular lunchtime places. Bright and friendly, and the starter and pudding we each had was excellent. The service was great. I only found the main courses very expensive for a luncheon, but each I saw looked delicious. Well worth a visit
F. G.
Visited with friends for a meal, menu was fantastic, so much choice. Service was excellent and the food was amazing, won't leave it so long before the next visit
C. G. T.
One of the best fish and chips I have had in ages! Lovely atmosphere with great service too
C. J.
We were very cold the food was subsequently not over hot overall very disappointing.
B. F.
Lovely staff - Thanks so much for your help!
j. o.
Chicken supreme, cauliflower cheese, and fries was great. The desserts were delicious. We sat outside and had a great view of the surrounding countryside. Not far from Wylam.
J. F.
Very helpful staff. We all four had lovely food. A little pricey but there is a two course option for under £15. Which is very nice. Well cooked food by a chef not a cook! Super puddings too.
W. C.
A very nice/smart country restaurant/pub including outdoor tables to the rear.
V. B.
Lovely venue food and staff were excellent, and made us very welcome, would highly recommended.
H. H.
Excellent food & service.
Fish Platter amazing!
I. B.
Its really a cut above. The service, staff dress code, the food was excellent, the decor and environment is warm and friendly. Our dogs were welcome too. I wasnt even drinking!
S. G.
Been through a tough time and change of owners in last couple of years, nice old fashion pub, low beams, beer and food, what more do you want.
A. T.
Staff were so helpful and friendly and went above and beyond to help. Food was amazing, infact I can't fault anything even from before I stepped foot inside. Will definitely be going back and would highly recommend others to go too.
C. S.
Great food, good service.
S. V.
If you are near by, looking for a new great place, or passing by Horsley then the Lion and the Lamb is a must go to and eat at destination! Chef Chris and his staff are superb and their food is to die for! By far some of the best food I have ever had. I can’t wait to drive three hours to eat there again!
S. H.
We had fish and chips, an ale and Prosecco. All fantastic. We will be back again very soon.
S. B.
Had a great meal with family tonight..smallish menu but its quality food perfectly cooked..nothing was too much trouble..the staff are friendly and even did us a sauce for the steak that wasn't on the menu..
Managed to almost forget about the stresses of coronavirus..although the staff certainly havnt.
Felt very safe..cutlery is individually wrapped and the socially distanced tables work well.
Great with children too.
It's a fab place to visit for all ages and there's also a lovely terrace and play area at the back which kept my 4 year old grandson entertained.
M. S.
The pub itself is a lovely place and the staff are friendly however a £19 overcooked steak left us feeling unsatisfied. The braised beef was good but the dumpling was poor and could have done with some veg to go with the rich beef gravy. My gammon, egg and chips was spot and the drinks were decent.
J. H.
1st visit here today. A lovely quaint pub. Built in AD1718. Great food , nice range of drinks and plenty of seating. Will definitely be visiting here again.
M. B.
My partner and I went to the Lion and Lamb on Saturday night for a meal. The food was outstanding, I had the chicken sizzler with prawns - delicious and he had the lamb burger, also very tasty. Large portions. I also had the Belgian cheesecake which I took half of it home as it was such a decent portion, very enjoyable. Staff were very attentive. Cozy atmosphere. Could not fault it.. Looking forward to
going back for steak night!
K. H.
Delightful surroundings, attentive staff and delicious food. Very accommodating to our friend who has complex dietary needs. Top notch.
B. B.
New management are brilliant. (Lovely family) All staff were attentive, couldn't be more accommodating or friendly. We travel for this food and it is well worth it. Outside is perfect for the sun and children's park. Highly recommended for dogs too.
s. r.
Gorgeous food and setting. Pricey but worth it for a treat.
P. G.
It's been a while since my last visit to The Lion and Lamb after being a frequent visitor for meals with my family I got feed up with the attitude and manner of the Manager. What a breath of fresh air the new management have brought to the newly refurbished establishment. The personal touch, the welcome and the lunch were spot on. We will definitely be returning.
A. D.
Nice food, good sized portions. Decent selection of drinks.
j. l.
Lovely meal last night. Chicken Kiev was fantastic with the best chips I've had in a long time. The batter on my husbands fish was lovely, light and crisp. We will be back soon to try the steak pie
R. B.
I think it has been taken over from the last time we were there
The staff young and helpful and pleasant just need a little more time to get into a good routine and learn
I had a steak which was cooked to my preference but the home cut cooked chips were just warm and a little over cooked the tomatoes perfect and the onion rings just right pepper sauce a little watery
I did not enjoy my dessert but that was my choice and fault
Reasonably priced menu
Check your bill as mistakes can be made
J. S.
Great service, great atmosphere and great food.
S. S.
We first visited here with family & friends, including several children, 2-3 years ago for my 60th birthday. We used the whole dining room and could not fault the food or service. Every time we visit from Spain our little gang of friends meets here for a meal as everyone enjoyed it so much. Love the chicken sizzler!!
V. R. B.
Excellent meal, excellent food great place .I would highly recommended it.
S. H.
Went for a meal on Saturday night, food was ok, but drinks were overpriced. The waitress with the very short hair was friendly & welcoming but the rest of the staff not so much. We had to ask how do we order and if there were any menus, service was slow and too many tables squashed close together (people letting their kids run around the room instead of sitting them down to eat puts you off) It was not good value for money (3 main courses & 3 drinks for almost £60) It's all a bit hap hazard no organisation, hardly any customer service or hospitality. It used to be a nice place but I won't be going back any time soon
S. W.
This little beauty is a favourite of mine for good quality, delicious food. I had a steak with blue cheese melted on top and it was incredible! The atmosphere is great with the place having a warm cosy feel.
S. B.
COVID regulations are spot on here. Very friendly staff. I had the hot lamb sandwich and it was absolutely delicious, served with proper meat gravy and sweet potato fries. There is a lovely outdoor area for kids too.
J. P.
Something has changed since the last time we were in for dinner a few months ago - somevthings not up to scratch . Phil is missing - big miss for many reasons. Food was fantastic but service was mixed. One girl was very good other two clueless and one had no training on how to serve food at the table. Plates were cold but food excellent. Big disappointment was lack of wine list - only two whites and two reds- appalling for a restaurant really.
Ladies toilet in need of upgrade too - cracked toilet seats.
R. C.
Popped in for lunch. Really fantastic food! Had soup to start...roasted cauliflower...unusual but utterly delicious. We both had sandwiches which came with side salad (fresh, delicious...not the normal wilted "they'll never eat it" side salad) and potato wedges. Beautiful, fresh, and in large portions. Happily recommend.
s. R.
Lovely Sunday lunch really enjoyed it
J. T.
Manager isnt very nice to staff, the atmosphere inside the pub is not warm and friendly as it was in the past. Staff didn't seem very motivated as a result. We went without drinks for the second half of our meal as we weren't asked if we'd like another. After our main course no one came to ask if we'd like dessert, I had to go and ask them if we could order one. Food was very nice so still three stars despite the bad experience.
I. W.
Really good food. Lovely place with plenty of character
p.
Would have given 5 stars but I'm 6 foot 5 and was in constant fear of whacking my head off a beautiful tudor beam. Luckily it has lots of lovely outside space with much higher ceilings.
J. T.
Lovely local with friendly staff and good beer!! Cracking beer garden for a sunny day too!!
J. C.
This is the hostelry of choice for our workplace. Staff birthdays, leaving-dos, or Xmas. Excellent menus, well prepared and presented. Popular but not crowded and reasonably priced. Beware the low ceiling beams! But enjoy the log fire!
M. G.
Lovely little gem of a place. Food was excellent and staff very attentive.
d. b.
Great country pub brilliant food, friendly and helpful staff. Unique style. Will definitely be back.
E. D.
Everything about this place is amazing. The best Sunday dinners and the staff are lovely and welcoming. We are regular visitors on a Sunday and look forward to trying the food through the week
D. K.
Very nice place well worth a look food very good good range of veg not your usual variety . Very attentive staff you get well looked after all the roasts very good but try the pork 👌... …
A. C.
A great meal. I had the field mushrooms followed by the belly pork and they were both excellent. I've never had belly pork before and it was delicious. Good friendly service, excellent beer (Black Sheep) I Highly recommend
l. p.
Excellent food at reasonable prices. The Goats cheese tart was delicious as was the sweet chilli wrap. Definitely will come back. Also staff very friendly.
g. w.
The decor is tired
The food good and waiting staff helpful and friendly
However the barman/landlord was miserable and unhelpful to the point where we almost walked out . Our party was not demanding in any way and even though the bar was empty when we arived we were treated as an inconvenience and left waiting to be served.
I don't think he should be in the hospitality industry
M. W. (.
Great food, great cosy pub. Great play area for kids too and patio that faces south for us parents to soak the sun. Friendly staff and fine well kept beers on draft. Best to book especially on a Sunday.
N. C.
Excellent Food. Excellent service. Very reasonable prices. Great Staff that couldn't do enough for us.

Went for Sunday lunch about a month ago, and found my favourite pub for friendly staff, great food and a warm atmosphere. Since then we've been back four or five times on various nights of the week and everytime we have had great food with great service. Long live the lion and lamb horsley 🥂👍
R. W.
Brought the old man out for a change, 4 meat Sunday feed was enormous and great value. The place is nice and traditional villagey, staff are spot on and folk must like it as it's always busy!
V. M.
Went with our U3A lunch group and we were welcomed by very friendly and helpful staff. Lots of food on menu to choose from and it was beautifully presented. Would recommend a visit.
C. B.
Delicious. It's probably better to book in advance for a Sunday, but they managed to squeeze us in. The dinners were lovely, lamb roast, but the puddings were even better.
N. C.
Great tasting Sunday lunch and lovely service!
A. W.
Great food parking a problem but loved the pub.
Y.
Great food. Vegetarian option too
Friendly professional staff.
K. S.
Great food, varied menu, we ate there 4 days in a week and had sufficient variety to enjoy each time. Clean and good relaxed service
l. o.
Booked a table here for 4,saying one person required gluten free, ordered beef dinner at the table which came in due course, but they couldnt provide gluten free gravy or Yorkshire pudding, very disapointing... not thats its hard to do....just some bisto soya ,boiling water Yorkshire puddings get from any supermarket freezers
Waiters didnt seem interested. At these prices they need to up their game
G. M.
We did not stay as they don't do food on Sunday, will give a try at a later date as it is under new management. We have been in past and not been disappointed with food so hope new owners are good and a bit happier than last one.
F. F.
Lovely food and plenty of it. Great atmosphere and helpful staff.

Service was really slow. We only ordered coffee and soup but it took 20 or 30 minutes to get it to the table. The place seems badly organised.
