Reviews of Old George Inn

Lovely little bar situated in the big market. In between bee hive and pumphreys. Short walk from monument metro station and right beside good local bus service. Place is lovely and clean and so are the toilets. Unfortunately it doesn't cater for wheelchair users. It was built in 1582 so is 440 years old. It is a must see for yourself pub, 9n evening it opens up a room upstairs for cocktails but havnt experienced this myself yet. Plenty of other pubs surround this little pub and plenty of restaurants but firstly pop in here the drink is great and at fair price considering it's in Newcastle. The pub does serve food but I didn't have any on this visit but it just means I have to visit again, soon. It has a great outside beer garden, great on a sunny day. I have recommended to family and friends and will definitely be back soon
😊X

The Old George Inn is a place I didn't know existed. Came with a friend who showed me where it was. 2 bars on split level with one upstairs. It has a warm cosy old world atmosphere complementing the fact that it has been there since 1582
Has live sports, pub grub, keg beers, larger, soft drinks. Did not have any food but looking at the menu and the food people around us were eating it seems good value for money.Barman was friendly and made us feel.welcome. Definitely recommend and will be back to try the food
C. D.
Had a great few beers in here, top old building... prices good compared to other bars in area.. seats where bit rickety but added to the fun of the place... always return 😀

Had the greatest pleasure of visiting the Old George on my recent visit to Newcastle for my sons graduation. We were made feel so welcome being visitor’s to the town , the food was excellent and have to say the staff were very attentive would definitely have to mention Ryan, Oli and Hen for showing us a very good evening in the bar and keeping us well supplied with drinks. Good job guys thanks can’t wait for my next visit cheers x

Lovely little bar with outside space. Good prices and choices of drinks.

Spent the afternoon here yesterday for our best friend’s hen! We did the bottomless brunch and honestly couldn’t fault it. Ken and Olly couldn’t have done more to keep our glasses filled and the party going. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend or return when we are next in Newcastle!
M. K.
One of the oldest and best pubs in Newcastle, has managed the switch from old school to modern pub without losing its identity brilliantly. Great selection of draft, bottle, and spirit.
R. K.
Haven't been here for a number of years always found this bar to be a great place this last time I had a drink in there was when the last owner left will have to call back in sometime 🍻🍻
P. M.
I have lived in Gateshead since 1999 being from Lancashire but only just realised this pub exists. Came at about 10.20pm on 6th June 2022 and had the best poured and cellar kept pint since I lived in London in 1980s. Black sheep as clear as a bell. Amazing and a lovely courtyard. Need to update those tables though. Thank you.
N. C.
Little loud for me on an evening but good beer and decent prices. Staff were friendly and we soon found a quieter spot on the raised area next to the bar.
M. C.
Love the pub but meal we had was mediocre. Not as good as used to be
B. O.
Had the most amazing meal here recently! Wouldn’t pass this pub- you would struggle to find better atmosphere & with even better staff! Thanks guys!

Great pizza. Great beer. Great staff. Perfect place to celebrate after walking The Wall Path. Cheers!

Absolutely outstanding service and hospitality from all the staff at The Old George: want to say a massive thanks to Erin, Oli, Corey, Dan, Henryk, Nuts (love that name) 😂 and Wendy but especially Andrea who didn’t go the extra mile but went an extra 500. Massive thanks from all the lads from Northern Ireland for a hugely enjoyable experience: we’ll certainly be back some time 😊 💙 ❤️
L. B. H.
Lovely pub. Had the pie and was absolutely delicious, made better by the fact that was half price when I went. Was after a Guinness but was not available at the time.

A lush historic place in the heart of town that I finally discovered today. Just wish there was an accessible toilet.
L. H.
Enjoyed it. Just had a drink but there was a DJ on who played a good variety of songs. Older ones as well as modern songs.
N. A.
Great live music here, lovely outdoor seating, clean toilets and nice clientele

Good night, good prices , floor seemed to be made of glue it was that sticky and the bathrooms were only okay
D. H.
Great place, on Friday and Saturday they've got live music outside which brings great wild atmosphere, other days is lovely place to go for a pint
H. H.

Great atmosphere! Couldn’t have asked for a better service- special mentions to Ryan & Oli, thanks guys for the great craic!
J. N.
Very welcoming place staff are very friendly polite and professional and very accommodating. Good choice of drinks and has sky multi room making our visit very enjoyable watching F1. Definitely recommend a visit here. A big thank you to Lilly, Ash and Sarah who looked after us all day 👍. Looking forward to going back.

This place has changed a lot since I was a regular back in my teens. We sat outside and had a beer along with meatball wraps which were excellent for the price. The barman was so friendly too. We will be back.
F. J.
My friend from Finland and I enjoyed a lovely meal on Thursday (Dec. 9). I can thoroughly recommend the peri-peri chicken. What I've always liked about the OG is the warm atmosphere, largely down to a very friendly staff. The service is excellent.
R. C.
Meet up with friends for lunch here regularly. The food is always good and the staff are excellent, especially Kelly.
A. B.
Fantastic place with a completely different atmosphere to the Bigg Market that surrounds it. During the day it has food which is pretty good and on a night it is an oasis in the dross of the Bigg Market. If you want an old school pub in the hearth of Newcastle try this place.
A.
Good seatings areas and a sprawling layout makes this a great pub for a casual drink.
S. W.
Great pints, and atmosphere. The place to be after a NUFC match 👌
C. R.
Nice pub vibes. Quite loud so a little difficult to hear one another but a nice enough place to chill with a pint and some food. Menu needs more pies and mash though!
J. T.
Fantastic, came across this purely by accident, staff were very friendly will definitely be back
L. H.
Good atmosphere for students and older ones
C. H.
Great Sat night dancing in the courtyard.great beer and tunes.

We came up from Birmingham, so never been before ,your typical drinking man's pub with music , would go again, good pint ..
T. G.

R. R.
Now my favourite pub lovely little gem
In the heart of Newcastle
S. G.
Was served by a young lady called Jess - she was lovely and put up with my questions and odd orders so well. Absolute kittens mittens and if the rest of the staff are as good as she was I'd give this place 6stars. A very nice time enjoyed during a very tough period. 👍👍
R. G.

Omfg this place was amazing!! Andrea was bloody fabulous and lockie who was behind the bar kept the drinks flowing! Never felt so valued as a customer as we did today. Dan was amazing with his hospitality too! Honestly would recommend this place to everyone! Youre missing out if you don't come ❤
I. K.
Nice but no Bass beer left a 6:30
A. W.
Great night. Great friendly staff.
A. L.
Great atmosphere before the game. Pint was okay.
J. H.
Hidden gem, stumbled across this lovely pub , took a look inside and liked what I saw. Great beer didn't eat here but the food looked good.
m. k.
Always used to like the old George .dosnt seem the same with larger renovation. Still ok.
N. B.
Good old fashioned pub, friendly staff, really relaxed, mid price range as just under £10 for 2 pints and nice food. Has a nice courtyard where you can drink outside and is in a great spot surrounded by some other unique shops and late night bars. It's easy to forget you're in a bustling city centre here as it just feels like a nice little local.
L. F. P.
Good pub. Drinks and food can be ordered on an app. Service is fast. Drinks are reasonably cheap. Food is ok. I ordered scampi with chips. My friends ordered burger and macaroni and cheese. Food is nothing special and ok for a pub. They have a great outdoor space
V. E. A. S.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff would highly recommend!
s. W.
Nice place never a big wait at the bar tho the place is alway full.

Great city centre pub. Good selection of drinks at competitive prices.
D. C.
Good choice beer, food nice with varied choice. Service good and cheerful.
P. M.
Nice pub with good atmosphere and the food was fresh and served hot.
S. R.
drinks were good and service was ok. covid measures werent great with some of the workers walking around with masks not covering their mouths but was lots of space between chairs. some drinks were being carried by hand but mine came on a tray though?? surely the tray is safer for covid??
M. T.
Not the pub it used to be. Catering for food more than drinkers.
d. m.
Great traditional style with loads of atmosphere, live music and buskers music great food
G. T.
Lovely character authentic pub in centre of Newcastle great courtyard to sit and have a drink and a bite. Staff friendly great value for money
W. P.
Christmas meal disappointed plenty turkey but veg barely cooked. Service good though
D. B.
Good old fashioned pub, the food is typical pub grub and there are some decent extra options. Beers are decent and the staff are friendly.
J. C.
Fantastic pub, very warm and friendly. Staff are extremely helpful, run fantastically well by Andrea the manager.
M. R.
Great old pub. A favourite of mine. Can't visit the Toon & miss out the 'Old George.'
L. R.
Superb hidden gem amazing staff amazing food at a great price. Friendly atmosphere and good music which isn't too loud that you can't talk
E. B.
Fantastic pub, so impressed with the system they have put in place for covid 19, knowing when a table becomes free and has been cleaned ready for the next customer and once the table is filled again they inform the bar staff that there are new customers at said table, best pub I've seen dealing with the situation. It's a flawless system. Top marks!!!
T. J.
A true rose amongst thorns in the Bigg Market area. Good selection of craft and more traditional beers with a great outside area in a cobbled alleyway. Always busy, definitely worth a visit. (Food on offer though I have not eaten).
M. A.
A lively friendly pub in a lively friendly city, Newcastle! Friday and Saturday nights are heaving! But good fun!
S. S.
Can't believe for all my many years of going out in the bigg market/cloth market I didn't know this place existed. Was great, booked a table easily, social distancing measures, track and trace were all in place. Used the app to place and pay for drinks didn't have to leave my seat. Very good.
L. G.
Too noisy on a Saturday, so much so you can hardly hear yourself think. We ended up going to a quieter pub.
G. H.
Good vibes, live sport, chatty staff
C. S.
Had a few drinks on Saturday afternoon with friends. It was very busy and good fun. Only down side was when we decided to have food, we chose Tapas 5 dishes for £13 - I have to say not much food for the price. Not sure if it was because it was near the end of serving meals or normal portion size for them, however it did look like we had been given the scraps. I have had Tapas loads of times and usually more than enough to share. I do know people who regularly eat in the George and love it
It was a shame but still enjoyed the visit.
a. G.
Brilliant little pub, we sat in the beer garden. Couldn't fault the table service, staff were lovely and so accommodating, great price for drinks
s. W.
Nice place never a big wait at the bar tho the place is alway full.
R. R.
A true north east institution , dark and dingy like a old heritage pub should be
L. C.
Served by Baz and Irish Ryan! Top lads, up for a laugh - food and drinks were cracking'
G. B.
All I can say it's a really canny place, and that says for the staff as well.
Love how it's set up aswell not your straight forward bar
p. h.
Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Reasonably priced. They pour a good pint. Food menu looked really good but we'd already been out for dinner. Will definitely be back.
D. J.
Great bar with an excellent outdoor seating area. Inside can get quite hot when busy especially with it being Newcastle's oldest pub hence it is better to sit or stand outside if the weather is nice. Service is quick and staff are friendly. One of the better bars in Newcastle and prices are reasonable too. In peak times there is a DJ in the outside area.
J. R.
Good drinkers boozer. Gets rammed on a weekend but there's a reasonable amount of room over a few floors. It looks much better after refurbishment.
There's also outside seating and occasional live acts perform in that area during the summer months.
I've rehearsed with my band several times in the function room and that too is decent, if a bit on the small side. Maybe not 'dead cool' but quite well priced for a city central bar plus it serves decent grub.
S. W.
Lovely space outside and in. Good atmosphere. Food and drink very reasonable.
R. L.
The place is what you would spect about a traditional British pub and the staff was very kind (Geordies at their best).
About the meal: it was delicious! YOU SHOULD try their Yorkshire Pudding, actually, it was 2 delicious Yorkshire puddings (the best that I ever tried) in the Sunday Roast.
Beautiful pub, kind staff, delicious food, and awesome real(cask) ales.
N. P.
Good beer. Great place to meet through the day. Great atmosphere later.
S. S.
Stumbled across this lovely pub along a side street with sheltered outdoor seating. Were lucky to go on a Tues when it was 2 for 1 burgers and they were absolutely delicious! Very impressed with whole place.
d. s.
If you like older pubs worth a visit.
Staff friendly and professional.

A. A.
Lovely old pub, good atmosphere, prices reasonable for city centre.
S. P.
Great pub always great service and atmosphere,
Andrea and Jemma were great and hen in the kitchen is a star xc
A. I. (.
Centrally located, has a wide range of cask beers, well priced. Food is straight forward pub food, and is served quickly. Enjoyed what I had. There are multiple rooms, so easy to find a good table somewhere.
M. C.
I only tried the beer so I can't comment on the quality of the food.
The beer selection is varied with cheaper options for students as well as a limited handpull and craft beer selection.
As such, the crowd is diverse making for a positive, cohesive atmosphere. I will go again.
M. P.
Great bar, bottomless brunch excellent value for money. Very friendly staff, hospitality excellent highly recommend.
J. H.
It's where I met Warren Butcher my fiancée
J. K.
Nice old pub with great courtyard
J. P.
Great service, atmosphere and selection of drinks. Would recommend
M. G.
Great sharing platter but disnt get any knives or forks or extra sauce so was abit dry eventually when the dips ran out. overall though a good selection of food and lots of it which was very filling for 2 people.
A. B.
Brilliant covid measures but loved here before the virus. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating plus function rooms. Great menu, real ales, very reasonable prices.
A. K.
Depends what barman serves you whether they follow special distance guidelines avoid the young one with a red beard hes scruffy.
Reply to your feedback. One barman an older guy followed all guidelines. The previously mentioned barman was drinking engery drinks while serving, rubbing his face moving used glasses and not sanitizing his hands before waiting tables. Maybe you need to look at the cameras as you have a issue with compliance. Whether you like my feedback or not its factual. We where sat at table 12 with an unrestricted view of your bar.
G. S.
Good beer, snacks, cheerful accomodating staff, some ales on offer at £1:99 a pint. Pretty much a perfect city pub.
L. W.
Beautiful old pub down a secret old alley way
C. C.
Nice pub. Okay food. I ate here three times during a fortnight working in Newcastle. The bangers & mash were good, the burger was okay and the beef & Double Gloucester pie was passable but a touch disappointing. The cheese had barely any presence at all, the gravy seemed to be Bisto and the "seasonal vegetables" were peas. Quite aside from peas being THE least seasonal of the vegetables and pulses, these particular peas were vile. They looked pretty awful and tasted worse. Now don't get me wrong. I quite like peas but these didn't deserve a place on the plate.
Some decent beers and staff.
L. W.
Lovely outside space, great choice and friendly staff!!
C. W.
Excellent. Always a winner after footie
Food is always good value for money
Courtyard is always bouncing

n. m.
Fab bottomless brunch, Andrea and Lockie were fantastic looked after us from start to finish.
T. P.
Great building. Oldest purpose built pub in Newcastle so we'll worth a visit. Atmosphere isn't my idea of a great pub, but others might enjoy.
D. B.
Quirky traditional pub with a great open air courtyard area. Good choice of food and drink and also reasonably priced. Enjoyed our evening and would definitely return.
t. p.
Spot on always a great beer and good atmosphere.

Went in Tuesday afternoon with a big group of friends. Service and meals were good.
A. B.
Had a quality, Ryan (Irish) and baz quality barmen

Nice pub, nice atmosphere, good food, a
LOT of history. The Old George is Newcastle's oldest pub, dating from 1582 and has links with Royalty, as
King Charles I was a regular visitor. The pub still has a chair beside the fire for him, and he is rumoured to still be occasionally seen.
J. S.
Brilliant old style pub I believe the oldest pub in Newcastle
D. K.
It gets busy on a fri sat sun. But in the courtyard the d.j keeps the place lively. The beer is sound but due to numbers it does take a little time to get served. Through the day it's fine and the food is great
A. W.
Visited during busy lunch period. Managed to get a table. Order Sundays dinner. Came very quick even though it was very busy. Food was extremely nice. Highly recommended. Lovely pub.
t. h.
Great beers and food 👌
S. B.
Great place, lovely relaxed place where you can chat and not have to shout. Great staff and very reasonable food, ok nothing fancy but good for the price. Always have a good selection of ale plus fizz Friday
N. A.
Lovely place, friendly owner who was very welcoming. Unfortunately for us, a wealthy local had booked the place out for a last minute party and so food was not available for us. It smelt and looked good though so will try again if I'm back over there
D. M.
Nice pub and staff very attentive noticed drinks nearly gone.
A.
Nice pub. Over 3 levels. Excellent for match days as they have lots of tvs and large screens. Would recommend a visit.

C. M.
Great place for a swifty or to sit in all day. Friendly staff reasonable prices always clean.
C. S.
Fantastic pub food great and the beers great too also great meeting place to meet friends before the match nice open air /smoking area went back to visit on Thursday 28th 2019 told the girl behind the counter about food intolerance so asked for plain chicken breast and chips...it came as a smothered chicken I explained that the sauce was not asked for she took it away with a face as long as her arse... brought it back I said thankyou she never even acknowledged me ... what a disgrace so rude will not be eating there again she needs to smile a bit ....
A. G.
Henry our server was a great help to us, really fast service and a great night out would highly recommend it.

Nice pub but spoilt by those little flies...had to move upstairs...food looked lovely but we were too late to order...bar staff friendly and she actually said she would have put an order through for food had we said.
We will be back
L. D.
Great place for a quiet drink during the day and dancing in the yard on a summers evening under the fairy lights. A mixed crowd, expect to see students and older people mixing freely
M. B.
Andrea was a bae. Bottomless brunch was amazing, function even better ❤️ xox
p. a.
Oldest pub in Newcastle, brilliant atmosphere, well worth a visit
l. r.
Quirky and lovely atmosphere and very reasonable prices
G. F.
From the George Inn in London's Southwark to the Old George in the Bigg Market... both great hostelries.
D. E.
Great local pub to chill and enjoy a quiet pint and some food if that's your style. Live sports and entertainment on Fridays, check it out.
o. b.
Good beer selection. Nice food. Excellent outdoor seating for the British summer. Gets very busy. Has function rooms for hire
S. D.
Normally I love this pub but on our last visit a football match on tv was turned up so loud it was impossible to have a conversation. Dont know why as It wasn't even a local team. We sat in the end room with the small serving counter.
P. P.
Great service, fantastic atmosphere, would highly recommend if visiting Newcastle.
S. O.
A good lively pub in a popular area of Newcastle. The Old George has a decent selection of real ales and its own DJ. The only issue is that the toilets are upstairs which would prove difficult for people with mobility issues.
W. G.
Always a friendly welcome
M. R.
Great boozer with several fecent real ales on tap and several aress and rooms to choose from
I. G.
Quality ale in a great location
B. O.
Fantastic olde worlde looking pub in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne great menu fantastic cask and craft range and at a very reasonable price! Monday specials include Jakehead at £3 a pint and half price food offer!!!
B. L.
A walk down memory lane enjoyable experience
A. C. S.
Quaint but a bit tired. Didn't appreciate the water dripping from ceiling which was noted but not checked. Staff a little surly. Maybe because it was a Saturday night? Could and should improve because location is very convenient.
J. H.
Great pub for a beer, inside or outside, very friednly staff. The food is good and in particular on mondays definitly the cheapest place to eat in Newcastle, for the price the food is great! Range of beers is good as well and I like the interior.
J. G.
Fantastical whimsical little old town pub famous because Charles 1st used to prefer a sneaky drink. It has the air of a snuggery throughout the entire building, it's very cramped with glass collectors running around everywhere, but it's very cosy, loads of guest ales to choose from.
B. A.
It was fantastic great night tonight roll on next time
J. M.
Great staff , good drink choice , great ambience, manager is particularly great
K.
Lovely clean place. Staff were amazing with social distancing measures. Good food too!
E. G.
Great pub, great service.
D. T.
Great beer and nice place but will always get a 4 instead of a 5 whilst the staff are still poor. (not all of them)
P. S.
Top pub
L. H.
Lush pints and atmosphere as always
M. G.
Traditional pub, with a pleasant atmosphere and excellent staff
N. D.
Good service despite being a busy Saturday night
M. T.
We had a pre-cooked room for our board games event and it was really enjoyable and we got to eat and drink from the pub in the room which was really good too. Prices are affordable too
D. D.
Friendly bar staff..cozy bar.

Loved it, definitely going back the next time I'm in Newcastle

D. R.
Good experience. Outside drinks . Friendly and helpful staff explaining procedure. Nice to be back in a pub
E. Z.
Crowded place with good food. We were late so most of the tables to sit around were gone. Their homemade burger is huge but tasty.
L. B.
Historic old pub in the centre of town, great selection of drinks, experienced staff, good food and a nice outside courtyard. A must visit for the history. Can get busy at times. I love it.
L. B.
Very well organised re pandemic restrictions. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff
M. G.
Nice atmosphere, reasonably priced beer. Only thing that lost it a star was all the hawking from charity badge and Jaeger bomb sellers.
