Reviews of The Broad Chare
L. S. S.
This place is everything I expected it to be. The service was fast and good. Portions were a good portion. We had the beef Sunday roast that was perfect with Yorkshire pudding that was crunchy on the outside but really fluffy on the inside. Everything was on a bed of veg and mashed sweet potato with roast potatoes on the side.
We also had the crispy big ears that had the consistency of thinly sliced pork scratching.
The mushroom on sourdough toast was really good. The mushroom was full of flavour but still had a nice bite to it while not mushy or crunchy.
The scotch eggs were nice but was on the salty side for me.
And lastly the onion rings were fried perfectly. Oil was well drained which is always a nice touch.
We were absolutely stuffed by the time we left. Didn't even get to the desserts.
I did kida wished that the roast would come with a pot of gravy for the Yorkshire pudding even if what was on the plate was just enough.

We had a meal here in the evening for a small celebration. The staff were attentive and ensured we had exactly what we needed. The meal was very good and the balance of seasoning was superb in both our dishes. One, fish, thorn back ray and mine round rump steak burger with cheddar and dill.
Rounded off with an Argentinian Malbec
A very pleasant atmosphere on a damp evening
K. A.
This was probably one of the best lunches I've had in a long time!
We got some pig's ears and cheese bites from the bar snacks menu. For anyone a bit nervous about the pig's ears, they just tasted like really good crackling. The cheese bites were super gooey and yummy.
The burger was probably up there with one of the best burgers in Newcastle but it was the duck leg that stole the show as it was super tender but the skin incredibly crispy.
The staff were very friendly and attentive, and the decor cosy but bright.
Thank you for a wonderful lunch!
T. B.
Wonderful lunch. Oysters were fantastic. Scotch egg best I have had. Pork pie as expected. Monkfish cheeks crispy and tasty. Good cider and cava. Lovely sitting in outdoor area.
L. R.
Fantastic. Couldn't recommend enough! The atmosphere and the staff were very inviting. The drinks and food selection was excellent. The food itself was on another level.
Cannot wait to return and would recommend to anyone.
Thanks for a great evening.
The photos shared don't do it justice.

Lovely afternoon in this restaurant. Staff are always ready to help. Food was excellent. Thanks for a lovely experience.
p. s.
Really good food top quality.
More than pub food
Good beers, friendly staff but you need to book. Will definitely be back sometime soon.
B. T.
Had crispy pig's ear, haggis on toast and a crab sandwich between two, sat in the beer garden. Food was tasty and service was quick
T. P.
Top pint in the downstairs bar and then dinner in the dining room. Not a huge menu, but everything we had was well executed and super service too. Great meal ‼️
D. C.
Popped in for Sunday lunch and although a bit on the pricey side at £18.00 for 1 course it was well worth it. We had the beef and it was cooked to perfection. I had a dessert of cinnamon sponge and custard £7.00 and it also didn't disappoint. We will definitely be back .
B. J.
Great selection of real ales & plenty other bottles, cans & keg.
The bar food is the very best I have had & the restaurant upstairs is fantastic.
On a sunny day it’s great to sit out the back in a lovely courtyard.
J. G.
Really nice food, good atmosphere and a great drinks menu. Went for a dinner on a Thursday and the place was nicely busy. Smoked beer was interesting, but worth a try once. Would definitely return if in the area, and would recommend to friends and family.
S. J.
Was great a little pricey but what a lovely pub and I can only say the lively barperson that served us was brilliant
B. C.
Great food, cosey atmosphere. We went for a Sunday roast, it was just like Nana used to make.
K. S.
Had the best Sunday pub roast here yesterday, best in a long time. We had the beef and lamb, all with yorkshire pudding. Fresh succulent and flavourful food and nice wine too. Could not resist the scotch egg and pork pie for starter and didn't regret it! All polished off with the lemon posset to share. Would highly recommend and will be back when in Newcastle next time.
D. M.
My first visit but a great pub and eatery. A couple of pints of well kept Taylors Landlord, then upstairs to the dining room. As others have commented the scotch egg is excellent and the black pudding main course was also very good - every mouthful eaten.
I was only visiting the City for a quick overnight stay, but if I return it'll be on my list for a return visit along with the Free Trade Inn and the Crown Posada (my favourite pub in Newcastle)
B.
Lovely place for a drink, gorgeous bar, small but perfectly thought out menu, excellent wine🍷 selection, beers looked good, comfortable and quaint. Give it a go pre dinner, post dinner or lunch...got a secluded beer garden too
N. A.
Had a brilliant dinner here. It was easy to book a table and we were very well looked after.
Braised oxtail and scotch egg were spot on with so much flavour. The Meat on the oxtail was so tender and rich, the sauce was full of flavour, beautiful smoked bacon bits and delicious creamy mash. My friend really enjoyed her halibut and her sauvignon blanc
There was a nice vibe here with people dressing up a bit and enjoying the atmosphere. Service was excellent at the bar and in the restaurant.
Can really recommend for a special meal
J. C.
Really good food, excellent wine list, lovely dining room. However some steps of service missing such as being offered tap water, talked through cheese board properly etc.
T. F.
We enjoyed snacks to share in the bar (all very tasty). There's an outdoor seating area at the back which we were told opens at Easter.
S. S.
Thoroughly excellent. Delicious fresh food: local crab, smoked cod roe, grilled halibut and griddled ribeye, all cooked to perfection. Highly recommended.
C. M. Y.
The Broad Chare is a pub style dinning experience! Perfect portions, the kind of pub/diner were you'd want to spent your entire evening!
J. P.
Great variety of craft beers and ciders plus some of the best traditional British food. Lovely personal and a very nice beer garden.
E. J. L.
I visited Newcastle to see the football match and found this nice place near the stadium. Even though I reserved a table for 2 people only, the manager kindly made a room for all three of us. Food was traditional British, which was fabulous and the atmosphere was good enough to experience British culture. There are separate spaces for bar and dining. You might have to reserve at least a week before, especially on weekends.
P. W.
Food was amazing, choice of exceptional drinks fantastic and very pleasant service. Top notch
R. D.
Quirky Newcastle pub. Sells Paulaner. Can’t go wrong with Paulaner, reminds me of Munich.
Big garden area out back. Popular.
Nice place to get drinks before dinner at Unos.
J. D.
Came here on recommendation and we weren't disappointed. The service in particular was excellent (thank you Katie, our delightful waiter) and the food did not disappoint either. We drank beer (they have a decent list including guest ales); the wine seemed pretty pricey. We chose a couple of snacks to keep us going; the pork crackling apple sauce combo is essential eating and the oysters were fresh and delicious. As starters you could do worse than the terrine and the salad with cow's curd (which could actually have been Philly ...). I followed this up with the duck egg and haggis on toast (it was recommended to me; I do likewise) which was fab (my only gripe was that the egg had been pre-cooked and kept warm) and my husband chose from the fish menu; pollack with new spuds and mussels. I was unable to resist pud; the date cake came swimming in butterscotch sauce exactly as I'd have chosen. Husband had his usual souped-up coffee - and his only gripe was he could barely taste the promised alcohol. But all in all a great evening.
M. L.
Gastro pub with excellent beer. Strongly recommend the burger with a nice pint of coconut stout! Very popular early in the evening but gets back to normal by about 8pm. They do stottie with ham hock and pease pudding but I noticed it too late!
C. H.
Four of us wanted a light supper before going to the neighbouring Live Theatre. The list of starters was perfect and the concern that portion sizes would be too small, proved groundless.
P. P.
Pets are allowed in which is great. The Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding was tasty. Service was good, staff were warm. There was a brief wait as the meal was prepped. The music was nice.
S. P.
Very good food and a lovely selection of drinks
J. V.
Good beer and lovely food. I had a perfectly cooked peice of liver and a wonderful Rhubarb dessert.
J. L.
We visited for the 2nd time and we had a wonderful night. The food was delicious and service aswell as atmosphere were just perfect. A true gem in Newcastle. Can't wait to visit again
E. S.
A proper pub atmosphere with great beer and delicious bar snacks - my husband described the toastie as the best he'd ever tasted!
P. S.
Good atmosphere providing you don't mind it a little loud. The menu is quite limited but this is not necessarily a bad thing. The Thursday special of Steak and Kidney Pudding had really good vegetables, plenty of nice gravey, and the meat was tender. The only letdown was the suiet pastry which was a little doughy. The chocolate and orange dessert was recommended by the waitress. The chocolate sponge was well baked but the star of the dish was the orange syrup which helped to lift the chocolate. Overall a decent enough bistro pub.
A. D.
Love a little pint in here on an afternoon. Cosy little pub with good selection of beers and bar snacks. Don't get much conversation from the bar staff even when it's quiet. Quite pricey for beers.
Y. F.
Fantastic food and wonderful staff , been there many times and definitely recommend this place.
g. g.
Love this bar Saturday afternoon does get busy don't expect a seat but don't let that put you off giving it a try
A. W.
Very nice Place, Good Drinks and Food. We spend there a nice evening. Man different Kind of beer availible and interesting Food. It's a nice Place to eat, trink and to have Fun.
K. O.
My partner and I stumbled upon this place, and it was easily one of the the best restaurants we've ever been to! For the price especially, this Michelin star restaurant does not disappoint. The ambiance was fantastic, and the beer menu extensive!
M. K.
Decent bar and fun restaurant. Very crowded though. Very friendly staff. The food was also above average.
P. L.
Steak was amazing and peppercorn sauce 10/10 chips could have been hand cut but would definitely go back
R. B.
The Broad Chare is a great place for an evening meal. We arrived without a booking and the staff were able to make a table available.
The menu fits most tastes and the ambiance in the upstairs dining room is friendly and warm.
The food was delicious.
We would certainly go back there when we are in Newcastle again.
S. H.
Went on a cold, wet Sunday in December. Warm, cosy, great beer. Didn't try the Sunday lunches and bar food but they looked good. A very pleasant afternoon.
T. S.
Good friendly service, nice selection of drinks and the Sunday roast, whilst not the absolute best I've ever had, was nonetheless very nicely done - the lamb was just right and we got some kinda side of broad beans and lardon. Just wish we'd had room for pudding as the choices there looked really tempting.
It was however during a heatwave that we made our visit and a couple more windows open, better air conditioning or more outside seating for diners would have been good.
D. L.
Omg the food was out of this world ..very friendly staff and well worth a visit
B. H.
We love a visit here after a walk on the Quayside to have drinks and bar snacks downstairs in the bar. The pork pie and crispy pigs ears are favourites. Good atmosphere, clean, and the staff are friendly. Only downside is if you don't get a table downstairs at opening you might wait. There's a more formal menu available upstairs but we haven't sampled that recently.
P. M.
Really lovely place to go any time of day. Relaxed and efficient. Staff very courteous. Great range of gins. Lovely way to start our evening out with close family. Outdoor area relaxed too.
O. D.
Short stay in Gateshead Quays with work, popped in here 2 nights for some casual Beers and cracking selection. Didn't get to try the bar snacks but they looked amazing.
s. l.
Have a lovely Sunday dinner a nd a nice pint too
D. S.
Fabulous service and the best fish I've had in ages. Highly recommend the Hazelnut coated Halibut with creamed leeks and girolles.
L. H.
Lovely friendly place with great choice of beers. Highly recommended 👍
S. M.
Excellent first floor dining room. Really fresh ingredients perfectly cooked. Lindisfarne oysters with apple and horseradish are superb, enhanced rather than finished by the dressing. A generous serving of very fresh crab on sourdough toast was then followed by skate wing, thick and à point. The potatoes were delicious too.
A. H.
Excellent meal, great staff. Consistently delivers a lovely experience.
S. B.
Excellent food and service with a very good wine list.
A. F.
Good atmosphere, lovely food. My fish was perfect.
D. C.
Simply amazing. Great beer and great seasonal food.
Is it cheap, no! Is it worth every penny, yes!
S. D.
Food is lovely and the service was great. Our only criticism is the heat, there is no aircon or even a fand to cool the restaurant area down.
Othere than that all has been fantastic.
L. W.
Great little place down the quayside. We stopped in here for a few drinks before going for a meal. Excellent selection of ales and wine, very cosy and would highly recommend.
z.
Excellent food and variety of beer!!
f.
Nice scotch eggs
S. A.
Free house with a good outside area
M.
Loved it... walked out feeling stuffed to busting, what more can you ask for...
The bar snacks we had for starters w were more than enough and delicious.
The hake and the calves liver mains were beautiful, would definitely return...
P. B.
Great snack, eg single oysters, scotch eggs, etc
J. F.
Superb service and food, provided in a unique venue
G. O.
It was pleasant enough with good food and drinks.
J. W.
Absolutely gorgeous, couldn’t fault the food or service.
A. k.
Great selection of beer well served by enthusiastic staff. Good food options too.
D. E.
Great service, well kept draughts and excellent food.
A. L.
Food was delicious. Not the cheapest place, but 100% worth it.
D. T.
The food here was decent, service was decent, everything about it was decent, not exceptional but above average. However, the menu was overpriced and pretentious, just trying too hard. £14 for a decent burger at lunchtime is just a bit steep. The chips were passable but that's it. The burger was well cooked, tasty, juicy, but it could all have been just a little better.
J. M.
We only had bar snacks but it was the best scotch egg I've ever had. The crispy pigs ears are moreish so we ended up repeating our order.
M. K.
Had Sunday lunch there, spot on well done to all.
T. R.
What a lovely place to enjoy a good meal and a great choice of beers.then carry on your walk along the key side to a lot more of great places to stop and have another drink and soak up the sights
M. G.
Superb food, great atmosphere in both the bar and restaurant areas. Staff are all friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable and the quality is very good.
They have daily specials on as well as their regular menu.
The Scotch Eggs are a delicious snack/starter. The steak and kidney puddings are well cooked and full of meat.
Highly recommended!!
If its busy you would be best advised to book a table in advance.
J. R.
delicious authentic northeast English food & quality selection of British ales
A. D.
A relaxed gastropub experience with dishes that exude confidence and comfort.
Try the Creamed Oyster Mushrooms on toast and the Char-grilled Hispi Cabbage. Great selection of beers and wines too
G. M. F.
Nice busy pub just off the Quayside Big place but manages to maintain an Intimate environment Fast Friendly Service with a warm welcome & a SMILE..prices were very good for the location !
L. P.
Try the Lindisfarne oysters, they are divine. Second visit. Food and service excellent. Staff lovely. Really good value for money. The dining room is warm and cosy. Unpretentious and all about the food.
j. r.
Beautiful food excellent staff, take extra money as not cheap. Great for a special occasion 😀
A. C.
Nice staff, friendly and helpful, and good food too, in a pleasant atmosphere.
T. H. (.
Fantastic food, superb beers, great service. Highly recommended.
M. G.
Amazing bar snaks as always. One of if not my favourite place to eat. Weather it be down stairs by the bar or up in the restaurant, I always leave thus place looking forward to the next time I'm going to visit
I. P. G.
Excellent experience overall, and staff were very helpful. Food quality superb. An enjoyable evening.
A. D.
Great beer selection! I had a burger from the bar menu and its possibly the best I've ever had! Simple but delicious and warmed plates! Simple things make a huge difference. Busy but welcoming atmosphere a must of you are in Newcastle!
J. V.
I have personally always enjoyed the starters the most. This restaurant is on par with any 1 Michelin star restaurant in terms of food quality and service, but at a cheaper price point. One of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle.
B. a. B. B.
Delicious, honest, great quality pub food and excellent service. We shared the cauliflower fritters to start and for mains, steak & kidney pudding and bubble & squeak with fried duck eggs. We managed to squeeze in the buttermilk pudding for dessert between us! Special mention to our waitress Lucy who was so friendly and attentive. We couldn't believe she was new to the team... She's a keeper!
S. V. (.
Excellent food from a very unique menu. Reasonably busy for a Tuesday lunchtime.
P. M.
Best pint of Estrella outside of Spain 👌🍻
B. T.
Great food, drink and atmosphere. Staff nice and friendly in a lovely traditional style pub
S. F. (.
Excellent service and staff matched with amazing food.
J. k. (.
Nice little place just off the quayside, very friendly helpful staff, the bar has a good selection of quality beers. The food menu is not too extensive, but we found that what was on offer was top of the pops. I had steak which was bbq'd and perfectly rare, my good lady had liver which I ordinarily wouldn't touch with a barge pole but you know what? It was really good. Highly recommended
M. J.
Fab food lovely staff dog friendly. Brilluant!!
J. M. F.
So good to be back in the proper pub with proper beer and to say proper food is an under statement! Terry Laybourne and team are once again blasting the culinary experience without pretension. The duck smoked bacon and prune pie is something else with Terry's name on it!
Hadn't been for a couple of years but we're back big time if it can stay open....
Thanks to the spectacular chefs kitchen and bar staff. Impeccable and welcoming x
R. B.
Pig's ears and a lunchtime pint. Excellent
R. P.
Delicious food (chicken, potatoes and veg) and great service. Lovely venue and meal to catch up with my friend. Thank you!
B. R.
Good food and beer with friendly and efficient service.
E. J.
Great beer and amazing food
L. F.
Lovely looking pub and garden but beer quality pretty poor. When one was returned, the staff said, "That one's an acquired taste.". It was like vinegar.
F. C.
Where to start? We ordered some snacks to get the appetite going, and they were simply mind blowing. The steak and kidney pudding was the best meal I've had in a long time. Wish my tummy could have got fuller because I wanted to try more of the menu. I'll have to plan a new trip to Newcastle to come back here for more!
J. P.
Proper pub with good ambience downstairs and pleasant restaurant upstairs in a "converted mill" style. Only been once but will definitely return on our next visit to Newcastle. Beer was well kept - stuck to the Partridge which is recommended for a darker bitter. Food and service was excellent. Liver with crispy bacon and onion rings was some of the best I've ever eaten! My wife had fish cakes which were tasty and delicious. She particularly liked the well-dressed salad. Very good value and strongly recommended.
A. P.
Excellent food served amidst a welcoming ambience. Friendly service and reasonable prices. A cultured ambiance
P. R.
If you want variety, this is the place to go. Mostly any Indian food you could ask for. At the time we went it was all very fresh including the salad. They also do some lovely sweets and have an ice cream machine. Take the kids for a treat. Jelly beans and ice cream. What more could they ask for. I had a good time. Not expensive either.
Sorry. This review was for an Indian buffet restaurant but can't delete it. Pressed the wrong button. Please ignore this review as it has nothing to do with the Broad Chair.
J. W.
Great beer and amazing bar snacks
I. M.
Best Sunday roast ever. Tasty, excellent meat, wonderful bread and vegetables. Excellent selection of beers. Fair prices. Friendly staff. Very clean dining room and restrooms (not a given during busy weekends). Next time we visit Newcastle we'll definitely return here.
P. S.
Excellent food and service. The beer is also very well kept. Highly recommended.
A. L.
LOVELY PLACE,TOP FOOD AND POLITE STAFF...👍
A. W.
The food was pretty amazing. I had the hake, which was cooked to perfection and the potted shrimp for a starter was also really good. Didn't have space for dessert this time but I will be going back very soon, so will try it then.
E. C.
The restaurant and bar is very nicely decorated and rustic looking which is very "in" at the moment. The choice of drinks were good and the drinks prices are fairly competitive with other bars in the area. Food is overpriced and underwhelming. There were only 2 veggie choices in the menu which were very expensive. The chips were dreadful, hard pieces of frozen processed potato, very disappointing. They add an automatic service charge which I personally don't agree with. You can get better food in Newcastle for half the price. I certainly won't be back.
S. B.
A welcoming and friendly hostelry that serves the best scotch eggs I've ever tasted. I'm not usually a fan of scotch eggs but these are delicious. If complemented with chips and a long drink and they make a satisfying and tasty lunch.
A. T.
Great food, beer and service. On the site of the old Baltic Tavern. Great to see a photo of the old haunt on the wall.
J. R.
Top place. Worth a visit simply just to try the Scotch eggs! Plenty of quality ales and lagers on the go here whilst the menu is spot on too. It can get pretty rammed downstairs as it ain't that big, but it's still a place I would highly recommend checking out.
S. D.
The pub has a really nice atmosphere. Having sampled a couple of ales I can say that what was on offer at the time was to my liking, local tap ales served in a tankard makes a pleasant pint. Your usual pub drinks are also available. Having chosen to visit here on a Thursday for some of the gourmet pub grub I heard so much about I couldn't get a table until 9pm so I recommended people to book a table if you are thinking of eating here. In the end I didn't eat here due to time restraints on my evening so my rating is based solely on the pub itself. Will update once I go back for some food.
S. R.
Second time we have had Sunday lunch & it is excellent. Worthy of 5 stars. Food seasoned just right & cooked perfectly. Staff lovely also. Will be back .
J. A.
It's great..expensive...but hey worth it
P. T.
Great pub with good quality food, we enjoyed all of our dishes. Prices reasonable and the staff were really friendly. Would recommend and definitely go again.
E.
Great pints, amazing food. The scotch eggs is to die for.
Not the cheapest place but its worth it
J. P.
Ambiance, service, food choice and quality all excellent. I cannot give an opinion on value because I didn't pay but the person who did wasn't very upset.
M. A.
Great Pub grub, always eat here when in Geordie land!
1. W. b. v. (.
Impeccable food served with a smile, my colleague recommended The Broad Chare as I was visiting Newcastle.
It was very popular but as I was eating alone they managed to squeeze me in - I'd suggest booking to guarantee a table.
A wide range of beers and other drinks.
J. O.
loving this resturant /pub we went on Saturday for a meal and added our vegan /nut allergic daughter at the last minute, not only did they not blink an eyelid but without pause said no problem and rose to the challenge to create a stunning meal for her. The food here is consistently outstanding. The staff are friendly and attentive and the place is relaxed and un protentious.
N. W.
Very relaxing lunch with delicious food.
M. H.
Legendary gastro pub on the quayside, the food here is excellent gastro pub dishes. Signature dish is the scotch eggs with the runny yolk. Great beers. Attracts more upmarket audience. Only thing is it can get very busy at nights at weekends, and is not very spacious downstairs.
P. G.
A relaxed and enjoyable evening in the upstairs dining room at the Broad Chare. Conveniently located and with great decor this place made my friend and I feel very comfortable.
The menu was varied, but not fussy. Dishes were simple, fresh and delicious. We sample the salmon and the rib eye; both were perfectly cooked and served with a nice amount of sides included.
£45 for 2 mains, 2 drinks and service included. I'll be back.
T. P.
Best pub for quality food and drink. Come here regularly when wanting a nice meal with a good pint. Lovely atmosphere and staff. The monkfish cheeks on the bar snacks menu are incredible.
B. W.
Probably my favourite pub. A proper pub. No fruit machines, no big screen TV, just the pleasant hum of conversations being held, nice drinks being drunk and good food being eaten. Go upstairs to the restaurant and you're presented with a small, seasonal menu that is always cooked perfectly. Visited many times over the years and I've yet to have a negative experience. A word also for the staff who are without fail knowledgeable and courteous. The Broad Chare is very worthy of its glowing reputation.
G. M.
Fantastic hearty British cuisine (the term "gastropub" would be damning with faint praise) that's always reliable.
Great small dishes, mains and plates to share - go for the lamb shoulder dish - great for a hungry crowd! It's also nice just to have a cheeky pint downstairs in the bar - though it can fill up quickly.
J. B.
Oh my! Pub a few doors down recommended this place to go eat. Food was exceptional can't really say any more. Now this must be a first, downstairs was the bar (empty) and upstairs was the restaurant area (not one empty seat) well done to this establishment and it's staff I was very impressed.
J. B.
Very limited, but interesting menu. Absolutely fantastic food, brilliant service and a great gin selection too.
They were very good with our two year old, too.
S. B.
Roast beef Sunday lunch, not bad but not great looks better than it tastes.
Apple crumble, custard very thin and watery.
Cosy atmosphere and friendly service.
D. H.
Staff looked after us the whole time, food and beer was great for someone wanting to experience Northern culture. However, after visiting a few years ago compared to now, pub has become a bit more expensive with food choices more limited.
M. G.
Simply delicious..lovely atmosphere, excellent service and outstanding food.
R. H.
First time having Sunday lunch here. Friendly service and the roast beef was fantastic. Yorkshire pudding could of been better and gravy a bit thicker.
S. G.
The food here is amazing. I have never had a bad or even average meal even when only eating from the bar snacks menu. The bar has a good selection of ales and wines and the prices are OK too. Highly recommend.
G. H.
Popped in today for lunch whilst on spur of moment trip to Newcastle and Quayside Market. Hadn't reserved but no problem. Special was roast of day with a choice of beef, pork or lamb. I ordered beef and OH ordered lamb. Didn't have to wait long for meals to be served. Both were excellent, meat melted in the mouth, veg very well cooked and a massive Yorkshire Pudding to die for. 2 drinks and 2 fantastic meals (with discretionary 10% service charge) at just under £40 is a steal and we'll be back (will book next time and try a pudding too)
a. a.
Great food and brilliant service. It has a downstairs bar so you can go in just for a drink too. They do amazing bar snacks!
E. s.
Atmosphere is chilled and the staff are very attentive and helpful. The sunday dinner was lovely I wish they offered chicken as it just seemed to be red meat that day...but the food was spot on👍
V. C.
A Newcastle gem - fab food from local produce, friendly service and enticing specials menu. Perfect for a cozy meal or for a group of friends. Worthy of it's reputation for quality dining.

David Kennedy and the team from Cafe 21 (my favorite high end restaurant in town) set out to make their ultimate pub, and they've done a great job with the Broad Chare. The food is traditional english and superb. Whether it dinner with friends, a quick but hearty lunch or just a couple of pints with some of their home made and delicious bar snacks (the scotch eggs are to die for), then this is a great choice!
A. N.
Went in for a light lunch and some drinks. Had a delicious hand-raised pork pie with amazing piccalilli. Good local beer selection and traditional decor. A great spot!
F.
I would recommend checking the menu before coming as it is not necessarily to everyone's liking. I would also recommend booking a table. Really nice food, nice atmosphere and a good selection of drinks. I can see why it was ranked 18th in the list of the best gastro pubs in 2018.
S. O.
Great little restaurant offering wholesome food at reasonable prices. It is very close to the Millenium Bridge on the Newcastle side of the River Tyne. Service was very good and the views across the river to the Baltic and the Sage are brilliant.
d. j.
Chose 4 small plates and one main
Great 👍
I. B.
Best scotch eggs in the world. Fact! All of the bar snacks are epic and the burger - basically eat here all the time! Actually don't, you'll spoil it for those of us that are already regulars
R. W.
Classy little boozer conveniently situated near the quayside. Apparently some of the reviews condemn this as a place 'full of suits' - agreed it seems that the local lawyers pop in for a swift one after work but what do we want them to do? Crawl home under the cloak of darkness and only crack open a bottle of IPA once in the privacy of their own homes? The Broad Chare is popular because it's small enough to have a decent chat and they serve a good range of beer. If I worked locally I'd be in there every Friday night.
V. J.
Great pub & restaurant. If evening restaurant is full you can choose from the lunch menu. Excellent food. Staff very friendly. Explained that Broad chase means wide alley.
G. R.
Good real ale and food offer on two levels in a traditional pub. Also, celebrating a German week whilst we were there. A little off the quayside but worth the search. Popular with legal professions.
P. B.
Forget the restaurant, which is great. Those in the know get the phenomenal bar snacks from the bar, great washed down with their superb house beer “writers block”. Best oysters in town.
A. L.
Excellent food. They do a great job of bringing out and enhancing the natural flavors of the ingredients. Generous portions, wonderful service, good atmosphere.
J. G.
Nice food even if slightly on the pricier side. The quality is certainly there! Sells good beer too. Reservations definitely recommended.
S. K. W.
Was going there for lunch, but I was quite disappointed as I didn’t know they closed on Monday and Tuesday
Hopefully will be able to try their food and drinks next time when I go to NCL
D. v. d. V.
Great bar with lots of different beers and nice place after a day at work. But also after a day of walking through Newcastle. Upstairs you can have your diner. The food is good and the waiters are friendly.
E. T.
Taste food Nice stuff 😋
V. H.
Wonderful Sunday lunch. Helpful pleasant staff. Nice surroundings and atmosphere. Have visited several times. Would definitely recommend
C. G.
Very nice food and beer selection. I was visiting Newcastle and this was recommended by a friend. Absolutely not disappointed. Staff were very friendly.
d. b.
Really great place, loved the food, the staff and atmosphere. You have to try the black pudding and the "writers block" local brew. Both are exceptional
I. C.
Nice beers, cool interior and very nice beer garden to avoid the busyness of the city on warm day.
A. D.
Nice bar, good atmosphere
S. M.
Pleasant but expensive restaurant. Still, you get what you pay for. I opted for the steak which was the best I have ever had. Cooked to perfection with loads of taste, perfect.
P. S.
Excellent food and a great selection of ales. Very good service.
A. A.
Great selection of bottled ales, beers and ciders. A little gem tucked away on the quayside. Bar snacks are nice for a quick bite.
P. B.
Excellent choice venue, able to accommodate at last minute, and impressed with a delicious Chargrilled Rump Steak, Abbie who looked after us was delightful, canny and professional evertything you would expect from 5 star service, I'd highly recommend to dine here.
H. X.
Good atmosphere but as I am not a beer person so can't really offer any more opinion on drinks. The food is quite limited in range with mainly finger food and fried stuff...
b. m.
Beer was real nice but it was a hot day and the ploughman's lunch had not been in the fridge for some time, the butter and cheese where both warm and runny, it was refunded without a problem, just be aware.
C.
The broad chare is always a pleasant experience, either too eat or just have a quiet drink. The set up as a bar and a very good eatery is second to none in my opinion..
D. B.
Good real ales - cosy place
P. C.
Downstairs, unfussy real ale pub with typically 5-6 good ales and ciders and an excellent range of bar snacks. Upstairs, a real gem of a gastropub/restaurant with hearty top-notch food.
D. L.
Great atmosphere and a lovely meal if a little on the expensive side. Well worth a visit. Would recommend reserving a table as can get very busy.
F. M.
Really nice food and beer but the menu was a little bit out there if you are looking for regular style pub grub but really enjoyed my burger and pudding.
N. A.
Worth a visit for the bar snacks alone, dont think I've ever had a scotch egg that good. Good selection of beers and friendly staff, it's not cheap but worth the extra cost.
N. P.
Great food and service.x
