Reviews of The Centurion
J. N.
Lovely place plenty of choice, staff are polite and professional, Good for watching sports. Excellent location for the train station. Would highly recommend this place
J. P.
Popped in when on a visit to Newcastle it was absolutely beautiful place to sit and have a drink staff very friendly and efficient will be definitely going back again when next in Newcastle
L. H.
Had a drink here before catching the train. Beautiful building inside with the tiles and pillars. Friendly staff and not too expensive for a train station bar
G. C.
Popped in here for a breakfast and it was really good. Food quality was top notch and found it value for money. Staff were both pleasant and competent :)
G. B.
Beautiful historic decor in iconic building, lovely glazed tiles. Found it a bit loud for the quiet drink I was looking for before joining my train - but that is just me. Was disappointed by the absence of real ale - got by with a "Dog".
J. R.
Somewhat pleasing on the eye overall! Decent beers and whilst on the upper end of the wedge scale, it's fairly inline with central city prices. I don't hit the bar so much. Normally it's on a trek outta Toon so a turbo beer it will be to fortify myself for the train. Screens show sport and there's quite a lot of seating and some standing areas. Staff seem clued in and get the beers out pronto style.
R. L.
A classy bar situated perfectly in the Train Station, perfect for a drink or two before heading onwards or, perhaps its because of the gorgeous traditional tiled interior that'll give you goosebumps and old-timey feels? In any case, you'll be pleased you dropped by!
v. r.
What a great one room bar, almost as high as it is long. Great place for a pint on a sunny afternoon.
Lovely decor which will be better again once the covid screens are removed! Hopefully that will be in July, but who can tell?
M. S.
Love it when my trains late just to have a few in the centurion. Good selection of lagets/beers/ales and always a random crowd. Decent for the footy as well.
R. W.
This bar on Newcastle central station is a must visit for lovers of railway architecture. Believed to be the original first class lounge, it is decorated in ceramic tiled walls and columns. Great place for a pint although prices are a little bit on the high side.
B. D.
I stopped off here for a breakfast the other day while waiting for a train. Great service, nice surroundings and a cracking sausage & bacon roll. Super handy for the trains too.
S. J.
Good pint of Guinness, not too pricey as toon goes quite busy but not too busy after all is was only 4 pm but got served quickly and managed to get a seat
J. M.
Great bar, great service and staff.
Often enjoy a pint in there meeting friends.
l. f.
Wonderful bar staff. Really friendly.
Great range of gins and prices for doubles are reasonable.
Lots of beers on tap.
Fab place to meet up with people with it being inside central station and next to the metro.
The decor is outstanding. Grade 1 listed.
I. W.
Great historical railway lounge that is now a pub. Enjoy good beer in a near unique location. Worth a visit for the decor and ale.
D. W.
Have visited before but still amazed at the tiling. It is fantastic. The drinks are ok as well. What a place to wait for a train
w. i.
Great train station pub but could do with a slight refurb.
It's a stunning building, but has become a diamond in the rough
D. C.
Great meeting place and excellent service and wide choice of drinks
J. C.
Loved the surroundings fab history to this grade 1 listed building. The first 2 drinks we asked for they didn't have any of so I had a coke and my partner his 3rd choice. Atmosphere good
G. W.
Fantastic Victorian waiting room converted into a superb cafe and bar. Very good choice of refreshments, especially good beer choice. Very friendly staff. A must visit when at the station.
B. H.
Yeah it’s a great building but what is better is the staff lots of them. All nice and ready to serve
k. b.
Nice surroundings but two pints of San Miguel was £10.60 which seemed expensive.
B.
Maybe not as busy as some of the other pubs in the area, at least not between 8pm-9pm. However I'm a big fan of this pub. Several large screen TVs (and one HUGE screen) broadcast sport, boxing was on last night. Good music too.
o. b.
Beautiful Victorian tiled bar, bit over priced and can be busy as it's a railway bar
M. M.
Great pub. Good beer, nice a cosy with an impressive ceiling
J. M.
Good for watching sport, nice beer friendly staff. Good for people watching too
l. h.
Mighty pints of Guinness here i must say, lovely looking bar,..can't say much else I'm usually absolutely MORTAL when I'm in here🙈🤣
J. T.
A bit cold, chaotic and service is a bit odd. The main pub area is cold, the patio area extremely hot.
The table was dirty and there were very little staff cleaning them.
j. p.
Great bar and freindly staff a must if waiting for a train.
Ale is good nearly missed my train back to Durham it was that good lol
M. G.
Loved this place right in the centre of Newcastle with a reasonably priced breakfast. Staff were lovely and friendly and so convenient if your travelling by train as this is in the station. Great historic building too 🤗
p. l.
Busy but still able to get a seat and quick service at the bar
D. A.
Love the interior, and a nice light room to have a pre-train drink.
M. J.
Love this bar steeped in history fantastic for a liquid refreshment before you hop on a train or if you have just arrived into the toon off the train in Central Station 🚉 great choice of lagers bitters and ales 🍺
S. H.
Attached to the train station, this pub has stunning, authentic architecture and a good selection of drinks for all types of people. TVs and a big projector screen are available during matches.
J. B.
I love the atmosphere in this place, the old building has character and the staff are great
G. W.
Probably the best tiled bar interior in the UK, definitely worth a visit
G. B.
A taste of times gone by, its be kept with the original tiles a little bit of history that's been kept
L. W.
Beautiful old bar lovely staff and atmosphere!!
P. A.
Had a couple of nice beers while waiting for my train. It was really busy because of the rain but there is plenty standing room.
P. H.
Great place just popped in for a quick drink
N. G.
Outstanding architecture and feeling of opulence. Good ale selection.
Worth a visit if you have time between trains
M. R.
Lovely pub definitely will be going back
N. D.
It's a beautiful bar but I never understand why it doesn't serve hot snacks in the evening. It would be so much better.
H. T.
Nice quiet bar in the train station.
K. S.
Convenient for the station, beer expensive but no moreso than most of Newcastle.
P. F.
Great staff.
Only had drinks waiting for a train but really liked the looks of the place.
A. I.
Fantastic architecture. Good Guinness
g. p.
A simple place to have a nice beer and whatcha sport
C. S.
A fairly decent beer selection at prices you'll find pleasantly surprisingly considering it's part of the central train station. The actual building itself is very impressive - apparently it used to be the first-class lounge back in the day. Worth a visit.
P. M.
Great relaxed atmosphere and tasty homemade broth
T. F.
Good ambiance, delicious fresh fish and chips, and a wide range of drinks including local ales. Might be worth having a taste before ordering a full pint (but I am a bit sensitive to too much perfume). Right in the station. Attentive service. Reasonably priced. Wasn't too busy so could easily meet with people between trains/ conference.
S. T.
Looks much nicer in the inside than what you see or expect from the outside. The drinks are professionally prepared and prices are decent.
The seating arrangements are also very comfortable, good for a long stay with a friend over a drink.
S. S.
Good food and excellent, friendly service
E. J.
one of the most beautiful pubs in a railway station in the uk. built for the old first class passengers it shows you how the other half used to live. Always quite busy by its nature but you can usually find a seat. Bar staff are great and plenty of screens to watch the football on
D. B.
Pint. Burger. Venue. Absolutely top notch. I love this place. I love the back story. I love the quality of the beer and the food. I love the burger and pint deal as well as the breakfast. Staff are consistent, cool, knowledgeable and excellent. If you are in town .... come here and enjoy.
K. F.
We called in for 1 whilst we met friends there. It was the old first class waiting room at Newcastle Central Station, so it has that old, grand look about it. The staff were friendly and chatted to us. There seemed to be a good selection of drinks available.
A downside is that there are no toilets, so you have to use those at the station. They are pay to use, but the bar will provide you with tokens, if you are a customer. That's a positive, I suppose.
S. C.
Beautiful old Victorian building. Stunning architecture, has been lovingly restored to it's full glory. I was enthralled with the detail on the tiles and horrified to read that the railway had previously demolished parts of it and painted over tiles. It made my long wait for a train much more comfortable. Staff were pleasant and friendly and coped well with what appeared to be a full coach party descending upon them! Good looked great with evening customers ordering burgers which were huge.
f. g.
For a railway bar, i think this one is one of the best. I really like the surroundings, although cavernous in size. Off putting having to ask for a token to use the facilities, but I totally understand why, and the facilities are a little jaded.
I have tried the food, which is homely, substantial and good value for money.
Service really friendly. Worth a visit
P. M.
Definitely the best station bar in England, come hear every year when my team plays in Newcastle. Nice & friendly, great selection of beers. Wish I owned it, it's a goldmine. See you next year. 👍👍🍻🍻
L. W.
Beautiful interior - shame about the ladies toilets not very nice and had to ask for token from behind the bar to go! Pleasant staff, good range of drinks. Would go again but only for one as I prefer pubs with nicer conveniences!
H. M.
Stopped off just for a short period before travel. Lovely place, very ornate tiling. Very comfy. Great for a quick bite to eat or a casual drink. Nice friendly service from the staff.
C. S.
This is such a great bar for meeting up with friends due to its proximity to the railway station and then short walking distances to all the main drinking and eating holes in Newcastle. They've got a good selection of gins which suits me and most of my drinking partners. Friendly bar staff make a difference too and there are plenty of those in this establishment
T. F.
Most ornate bar with heritage...must see. Bar has a good choice and food reasonably priced. I ordered scampi and chips and was pleasantly surprised that the chips were home made and chunky, just the way I like them.Looks like a good place to watch sport as well.
R. B.
Beautiful Victorian pub in Central railway station. Great choice of beers and friendly staff. Unfortunately the tables could have been cleared a bit more often and we had to sit with dirty glasses on our table for quite some time. Couldn't really blame the staff that we could srr as they all seemed to be busy serving.
T. K.
The place is an experience. The decor with the tiling is breathtaking.
Great beers range, good bar service.
l. h.
Good bar 2visit b4 train journey but £24.00 for a bottle of wine is robbery they didn't even wear a mask while taking my money
K.
It's always been a lovely establishment and having spent a lot of time in there for England's #Russia2018 campaign, it's become a firm favourite. Great selection of drinks with deals on certain bottles, lovely lovely food and really nice staff; the atmosphere has quite simply been outstanding. The only 'pick' I'm going to have is with the ladies! Not overly clean, loose loo seats and only 1 of 4 taps working so not an entirely pleasant experience while spending a penny. Maybe with the extra £'s made during the World Cup, because the bar was absolutely rammed for every England game, they might consider fixing the bathroom? Oh and you can take your dog apparently. I've not had the chance yet but first opportunity I get, me n Sal will pop by for a bottle of Koppaberg and a steak sarnie ... actually cooked as requested too. Crackin'
t. p.
Always a good pint and such a wonderful building.
d. f.
Great pub but obviously expensive, retained the original features good bit of the toon history right there
j. b.
Set in the train station and previously the waiting room this has incredible architecture inside that probably people on a night out miss as they may not be able to see straight! Normally here either at lunch time or early evening when it's busy but not heaving. Good meals but you normally have a bit of a wait. People say you have to pay for loos but you just need to ask for a token at bar- stops comuters using it
T. H.
Go for a pint - forget the food.
Great friendly staff, good real ale, nice old bar, but overcooked burger and inedible chips.
J. M. D.
Great room. Staff nice. Beer well done. Food lacking finesse and takes a wee while too long to get to the table for a train station bar. Toilets are a challenge.
A. D.
A decent pub with lots of history and character.
R. A. G.
An almost indescribably grand station bar with easy access to the platforms and Metro station.
I'd not visited for some time but I'm glad I have myself a moment's pause here at the Centurion whilst arriving at Newcastle Central.
Would certainly visit again.
L. H.
Superb bar in Newcastle with amazing architecture. The building on the inside is stunning. Can be a little pricey, but the beer is good. Well worth a visit - ideal if waiting for a train or starting the night.
F. C.
Great place to wait for a train. Loverly edwadian decor.
M. F.
Had the All day breakfast, was really pleased with it, good ingredients too. Had a pint of Great Northeastern Gold which was served well and tasty. Football was on and although it was on several TVs it somehow wasn't intrusive. Decor is awesome, dates from 1839!
m. B.
We visited this hotel to attend a Freddie Mercury tribute act so can't comment on accomodation .
Drinks quite expensive . Hotel bar comfortable and nicely furnished .
Good show performer excellent singer had personality , drinks expensive but event very reasonably priced .
Two course hot meal generous portions nicely cooked and presented .
I would return to attend similar .
G. T.
Called for morning coffee before shopping in Newcastle. Free small croissant with cup of coffee In a very pleasant atmosphere, although can be cold from the station platform. Fabulous decor
J. T.
Good choice of drinks, amazing breakfast...a must if you have a long journey ahead!
c.
Beautiful surroundings stunning decor best bacon and sausage sarnie ever
J. B.
Came here for a drink before getting on the train. What with the covid 19 bother, the place was barely a third full. Even so they couldn't get their act together to collect an order from our table without being reminded we were waiting, and then they brought us someone else's drinks. God help them should it get busy.
A. M.
The drinks and service were very good and quick, but the Victorian tile work on the walls, the pillars and up to the ceiling are so worth the visit!!!
M. B.
WONDERFUL architecture and features in a really ideal position. A long distance traveller's sanctuary when arriving in Newcastle! HUGE screen for t.v. sport if you like that sort of thing. Attentive staff, pleasant attitude, well kept ales... What's not to like!
P. L.
Awesome venue at the station. Amazing to sit there and think of the space being used throughout history. Decent point and good food a well. They have WiFi, but it is not great
F. S.
It was fabulous it had the footy and brown ale what more do you want
D. B.
Lovely place
Nice beer and food. A must stop
R. M.
Excellent surroundings, the Victorian tiled interior is truly astounding. Really worth a visit if you like extraordinary spaces for a pint.
I. L.
Great for a couple of beers with quick service amd ornate surroundings. Has immediate access to central station if you are travelling as well. Tad pricey but due to location is to be expected
b. j.
Love this pub so relaxed
J. F.
The food and drink may be middle of the road but the decor is World class. If you're visiting Newcastle you have to come here, if only for a quick beer, to enjoy one of the best pub interiors in the country
J. G.
A nice place to visit while waiting for a train or because you fancy a nice pint
S. I.
The casual signs outside believe the stately appearance of the inside. The architecture is Newcastle's version of Versailles with more brown than gilt. It's a pleasant change from other the bland franchises dotted around stations. Staff delighted to have you spend your platform waiting time in here.!
B. B.
Understandable busy attached to Central Station iv given a 4 star rating only because, you need a token for men's toilet's otherwise it's a relaxed place for a drink, my friend and I were bought a drink only because we watched his bags what a nice man.
J. W.
Those of us old enough to remember 'Railbar's before the railways were de-regulated find the Centurion rather ornate and wonderful....from the golden age of rail when steam WAS king.
Called on a Saturday afternoon/evening which made it a rather sombre evening after Newcastle United had lost at home to Crystal palace....but nevertheless downcast Geordies and upbeat Eagles mingled well without any undercurrent.
Good range of beers available at usual upmarket bar prices but the ale is kept well.
Well worth a visit if at a loose end on Newcastle central station....even on a Saturday night.
A. E. (.
A bar set in the beautiful Victorian first class passenger railway lounge. Restored to its former glory including the beautiful tiles that surround the walls and ceiling.
B. C.
Its a very good bar located to central station. You dont have to leave the station. Its a Sports bar with large screens so great for key events but it does get busy.
S. K.
Really nice Victorian decor with amazing tile work and ceiling right inside the station. Ordered two chili con carne and a soup (butternut squash soup). Chili looked great but couldn't taste it... chef must be from Rajasthan region of India noted for spicey foods. Too many Tabasco peppers, too much chilli powder and probably some cayenne. Once it hit the mouth the taste buds shut down. Quick case of hiccups followed. Asked for sour cream to tone it down, no sour cream available. Tried grated cheddar cheese with minimal affect. Bread and butter from the soup helped some. After a few bites of the chili couldn't taste the soup either. On the positive side, sinuses haven't been this clear in years and based on how the digestive system is responding that plumbing should be pretty clear in about an hour. Ate just about half a small bowl. This isn't my first stop for food here, location is great historic facility is gorgeous but might stick to sandwiches from the adjacent deli next time.
D. P.
Great bar with superb architecture. Great staff too.
A. C.
I was in town on business and ended up watching England play in the World Cup semi-finals it is a very well designed pub that has an entrance to the train station and the City which is quite unusual it is right in the heart of the city centre you will not regret a quick drink here if you visit Newcastle remember to look up and admire the lovely interior design
S. C.
Decent enough place for a pre train drink. Beautiful historic decor. Prices not as bad as some city centre bars. And it's not a Wetherspoons 👍
B. C.
Enjoyable place to chill after work with a good beer or two
W. M.
Nice decor, great history, friendly staff. Too expensive, toilets you have to pay to use. As well as the travellers, lots of pretensious geordies - shame on you all.
J. J.
Lovely building with outdoor/indoor area to sit and drink a pint while watching trains pull in! Very good beer though not the cheapest.
D. P.
A beautiful interior. The tiling is amazing. A real architectural gem.
D. L.
Free croissant with coffee ,nice touch. Friendly service from Helen. Lovely decor much nicer than sitting on forecourt drinking coffee from plastic cup.
m. f.
Lovely architecture but makes it noisy when full
A. I.
Nice place to grab a beer whilst waiting for a train, a little bit more expensive than some of the bars just outside the station but convenient
T. F. E. (.
A really enjoyable experience. Very good Scottish and vegetarian breakfasts served well at a great price. Superb Victorian decor.
A.
Central Station at Newcastle upon Tyne. Nice atmosphere. Paying customers need to get tokens from the bar /none paying customers need to pay 50p for toilets (Male&Female).
Drinks on the expensive side.
G. L.
Visited this bar many times over many years. Very much like how it looks. Nice atmosphere; and a good pint.
L. M.
A welcome pint in a clean and tidy bar with friendly, organised staff.
R. M. (.
Confusing, the Entry was the exit,
Or that may just have been us, although we were only following staff instructions
Nice pint though, if pricey.
C.
Often pop in before getting the train to watch a bit football and a shandy, lovely interior and big screen, but a couple of times ive been now and the toilets have been locked? Not sure what thats about
W. B.
Great service, staff friendly and efficient. Lovely poached eggs on toast, nicest coffee I've had out in a while. Would recommend
B. S.
Great bar, best Rail Station bar I know.
I. “. H.
Great pub for a pint or a brew while waiting for your train. Prices are reasonable and good selection available.
s.
Fantastic station bar with wonderful height and tiling. Reasonably priced, good atmosphere. Easy place to pass an hour or two
J. M.
Beautiful interior but expensive
V. J.
Really beautiful vintage bar
A. B.
Good selection of well kept ales and a splendid bar team. Love the whole atmosphere of this fine establishment.
A. T.
Slightly run down traditional pub with little atmosphere due mainly to a passing clientele. Beer was not up to standard I usually go to a traditional pub for.
P. L.
Old school boozer, handy for a pre train pint. has a big tv for football sometimes boxing.
wouldn't go out of my way to attend but canny pub.
L. H.
Always a great experience when we're in here and the drinks are always spot on. Perfect place to go before, or even after, your train journey.
K. S.
absolutely amazing bar and place to chill while waiting to go on your travels from central station and even if you are just wandering around and stumble into the place
D. M.
Fantastic pub with museum-level architecture and interior. Good food and drinks at reasonable prices. Always busy and popular with travellers and locals.
K. R.
Best cafe / bar in Newcastle. Great place for a coffee whilst waiting for a train and for meeting with friends for a drink in the evening. Jaw dropping decoration.
a. d.
Great place to meet up, excellent beers friendly place, best thing children most welcome makes visitors feel a bit more relaxed with there children
B. K.
Busy. Plenty of ciders lagers and beers.
Very ornate interior. Takes you back to a bygone age. They do have a massive tv showing sport.
S. C.
Lovely bar, always a pleasant atmosphere, very spacious inside & the huge victorian ceiling is definitely worth a look.
B. 6.
Great pub
D. P.
Fine pub as railway venues go. Didn't eat there but the burgers did look very good and the pint and burger offer was good value.
M. M.
Great breakfast menu, lovely pints and a good range of gin etc. The breakfast menu was fab, the prices were great and the staff were super lovely 5*
P. M.
Great bar. Perfect for a pint before train. Also great place to watch sport.
P. B.
Really nice place to have a beer when waiting for a train, food looks good even though I have not tried yet
W. R.
Nice bar for those in Newcastle whondont want to run the gauntlet. I only removed on star as the fire alarm kept going off every few mins on our visit
P. G.
Efficient staff, good range of beers at reasonable prices. Quite busy at peak times but service is good
w.
Atmospheric and comfortable. Wide range of beers. Extremely pricey as befits a station buffet
R. H.
Lovely building but pricey and not the best quality draft. Big screens to watch the footy though!
m.
Great bar to have a drink in whilst waiting for a train.
Only downside is you can't hear the announcements from the station.
D. G.
Great bar and very nice inside with all the old tiles. Great beers too
K. K.
Lovely decor. Quick serving staff. Popped in for a cheeky drink before catching the metro
B. M.
A beautiful looking pub set on Newcastle station. Young and enthusiastic staff - lively atmosphere in the evening.
G. S.
Nice place but drinks arnt the cheapest in here. Nice historic building and a very old cosy style venue here
P. T.
Friendly staff, good atmosphere and impressive building inside.

S. G.
Great place for a early drink or a tipple before the train. Giant screens for sports too.
M. K.
Really nice pub right next up Central Station with a great Atmosphere.
G. R.
Beautiful surroundings, nice pub, wouldn't think you were in a railway station.
S. M.
For a railway station it is really good, but knocked down 1 star as unusually had no screens showing any train information
C. H.
Lovely pub, great waiting and socialising area whilst traveling😊
P. W.
Nice place to grab a pint before a trip on the train. Nearly £4.50 a pint.
d. m.
Nice atmosphere, but the music is too loud and the drinks are extortionate...
F. T. B.
Great pub, and an awesome place in terms of the rooms layout
V. F.
Good meeting place.decent beer as well.handy when getting off the train.
S. L.
