Reviews of The Cumberland Arms
R. P.
Arguably one of the best pubs in the North East. Great laid back atmosphere. Lots of space outside at the front overlooking the Lower Ouseburn valley. Cosy two room inside with real fire in the winter and loads of folk evenings in the other bar. Great small venue at the back/ upstairs. Always a good selection of cask ales and real ciders. All in all a great pub.
C. G.
I would normally give the Cumby a miss coz it gets real crooded.. but i popped in ont way home for a couple while the sun was out & it was tremendous & nice to be able to have a proper look round...
If ya in the Ouseburn area give it a go.. you won't be disappointed
S. J.
Great friendly pub. Really nice atmosphere. Good little venue for live music. Staff are polite, friendly, cheerful and will do anything for you. Fully recommended
R. H.
Amazing old school pub....a lob time favourite. Great selection of keg n cask. Friendly staff, great area for sitting outside and lots of music events
I. G.
Have visited this pub many times over the past 20 years. Pub of great character and and clientele. A good range of real ales although some are quite pricy!!! 🤠
B. C.
Classic wet pub. Excellent selection of ales, no frills. An absolute gem hidden away in Byker less than a mile from from the Tyneside waterfront.
P. R.
Fantastic pub pre-Covid and since reopening it hasn't lost it's charm. Selection of Ales is top drawer and the atmosphere is as great outdoors as it always was inside. Bar staff always superb too.
D. D.
Alas, there were no scotch eggs, but the beer and company were wonderful.
M. F.
Do pubs come any better?
e. d.
Wide range of ales available at this pub in the Ouesburn valley
A. M.
A really nice local feel pub. I stumbled in while carolling was happening and it was such a lovely atmosphere. Everyone, staff and patrons, were really kind. There's a large selection of draft beer, stout etc. Why I haven't been in before now I'll never know.
D.
Cracking place! Occasional dancers, occasional live music. The outdoor space is fantastic in the summer and at bonfire night. Great beer, always local ales on tap. Local musicians meet up here to jam. A must visit pub
P. B.
Dog friendly.
Really is the perfect pub. Live music outside, folk band when we visited, awesome drinks, dogs everywhere, just great!
Worth a visit for sure.
J.
Great little pub, and a fantastic music venue too. Always got a decent selection of beers on cask and keg, plenty of space outside when the weather's nice, which is fortunate as it's not the biggest pub in the world. 2 rooms downstairs with another upstairs for music, gets a fanatic selection of bands and always good sound. Always worth a visit as part of any trip to Ouseburn.
P. M.
Contender for the best pub in the country. Gorgeous, wooden interior with dappled sunlight coming through the stained glass windows. The pub is tucked away in a park near the river and close to two other fantastic pubs and has a serving hatch, vegan bar snacks, and jam sessions weekly. Bar games and a perfectly poured pint of Guinness. Would make you want to move house to make this your local.
R. D.
Although I haven't stayed in their BnB I have had the good fortune to have been associated for a short while with the owners (who are the loveliest of people). I love the beer garden on a nice and sunny afternoon or evening. Choice of very good beers on cask and kegs. Excellent vibes.
E. C.
Great pub with a good range of beers, also great venue upstairs
N. A.
Only stayed for one night. Room was clean and tidy and offered everything that I needed. Didn't use the bar downstairs though if I stayed there again I certainly will be. Breakfast is brought to the room but didn't have anything. My only gripe was that my room was above the bar which must have had live music on as I could hear the base booming, though ear plugs were provided. I would stay there again if in the area.
J. G.
Best pub B&B you can wish for. Breakfast is brought to your room. Views looking over the Tyne River valley. Spacious rooms. Ask staff for anything. Beer and ciders downstairs are varied and interesting; yes you’re upstairs from a pub. The pub is folky, make your own music, piano on-site, free to play, it’s pleasantly grubby. They don’t serve food, apart from some local snacks which vary: you’ll get whatever they got in that evening. But there are loads of eateries in the area: Greek, local, Lebanese, Chinese, Malaysian, McDonald’s, ... One warning: it’s above a pub. Expect some noise until about 12-1am. But sometimes it’s dead quiet at 10am.
J. m.
Love this pub excellent beer excellent atmosphere would highly recommend 😁
M. T.
I like the Cumberland, it's outside only at the moment so no real atmosphere but a good selection of beer, both craft and keg, and the scotch eggs sound amazing although I didn't try one. Table service is friendly and not pushy. Tables and chairs cleaned between customers.
C. S.
Lovely pub, takes walk ins as well as reservations and all round lovely staff too!
J. C.
Great beer and service. Lovely pub
K. E.
We visited for a pride banner making event and it was fab. Staff were wonderful and friendly, checking on us for orders even though they were two staff members down and thoroughly overworked. As we were leaving, we saw live music being set up which seemed like it would be good. Only downside was the uphill walk to get there! Will be returning to experience properly...
R. M.
First time visit on a Saturday night and liked the atmosphere and the wide selection of good beers.
18 months on its still a great informal pub with great beer selection and dog friendly approach.
C. C.
Great old school pub. Plenty of craft and local ales on tap. Dog friendly and the staff were very nice. Will definitely return!
J. W.
Fanastic selection of drinks and the best smelling bar in the world due to the wood fire! Will be back
N. D.
Great pub with a good selection of beers and ales
R. S.
Great service during these times. Sticking to outside tables only even though rules have changed, which makes sense to me. Felt very safe, table service, well spaced seating, with canopies and some with heaters. Usual great selection of drinks too.
K. M.
This place is a true gem. My second visit last night to see Kiss (not the painted face male band) but a fabulous all-women band. Outside last night with 'stand-by' umbrellas, outside tables, a super welcoming hostess, lovely service team and live music. Thank you Cumberland Arms.
J. M.
Very relaxed atmosphere and a good range of real ales.
P. S.
Absolutely 1st class. Love the pub. Real ale and amazing staff especially at this difficult time. So good to have a real pint. Waitress was fantastic. Thank you so much. Friday 16th April
J. M.
Second visit here, great pub, great beers. Lovely proper pub environment. Well worth the trip from Birmingham.
C. H.
Absolute hidden gem! Great outdoor area too, perfect for summer
R. K.
Good selection of beers and great atmosphere
J. T.
Wonderful old traditional pub , set in a beautiful location. Almost a country pub feel but near the centre of a vibrant city .Friendly staff and clientele.
P. R.
Top Draw heritage pub very characterful four real ales. Highly Recommended
S. S. a. '.
An excellent pub, warm and welcoming. Great selection of real ales for all tastes. The original seating in the lounge bar adds to a feeling of timelessness in the place. Perfect for a relaxed pint or a session with friends. Award winning Folk dancers practice on a Wednesday upstairs, a must see.
C. L.
One of my favourite pubs in Newcastle.
I. S.
As with most places during the current "situation", the service is slow and uncertain, and the logging in thing is inexplicably weird on every level. The IPA was mighty fine though, if a little pricey, and the outside area is a lovely place to sit on a nice day.
S. R.
Great pub, solid beer choice and in the winter a brilliant open fire to enjoy
D. H.
Proper pub. Real fires and plenty of choice when it comes to drinks, especially beer. Nice bit of outdoor seating and a room upstairs where they have gigs and the quiz and stuff. Can get a bit packed on a weekend, so maybe one to avoid on Friday and Saturday nights if you don't like crowds, but that being said, if a pub was dead on a Friday or Saturday, you'd really need to be wondering why.
D. J.
A really excellent pub. Two rather tiny rooms downstairs and an events/function room upstairs that hosts live music and theatre and all sorts. There’s also a folk club where you can just bring an instrument and jam along with a load of musicians. Quality. And the beer is good too!
D.
Another great 'Real Pub', with a great outside seating area. They brew their own ale too as well as selling other good stuff too. Keg and draught. Some really good stuff, although maybe a little pricey. Am just getting over having to pay in some places £4 a pint. Here I have paid £6. But a fab place with fab staff. No bar meals.
C. D.
Traditional, friendly pub often with music going on either in the bar or the upstairs venue. Great beer selection. There is a terrace with a good view, well used all year.
A. H.
One of the best beer bars in Newcastle
D. P.
Amazing vibe. Friendly staff and punters. Great improv production being put on upstairs. Stayed in a room at the pub which was clean, well decorated (simple, homely) and spacious. Food brought to our room in the morning tasted great. Will stay/frequent again!
T. E.
Lovely local spot that does a great job of occupying that niche between an atmospheric old pub, and a venue for modern shows and events. It's a great success all round, and I love that it's the only spot on its little road, as it makes it feel like a private party or a bit of an event whatever I go there for. That said, its location also provides a bit of a calm oasis too when there's not a gig on, so it really does fit a lot of bills. The extensive selection of beers and cask ales on, and the lovely outside seating make this probably my fave bar in the summer.
N. S.
This was once the best pub in the Ouseburn, but seems to been resting on its laurels for a couple of years. Visited recently, and whilst delighted to see the choice of keg and cask ales, plus ciders from independent producers, it was noted that there was a premium to be paid for this extensive choice. For example, several beers were priced over the £4.10 per pint mark, with others being available in half or two thirds of a pint at rates which appeared fairly exorbitant. Perhaps this is acceptable to those who still find pub drinking an attraction, but others may be deterred, which would be a great shame.
On a positive note, the gents toilet was clean, and the stoves were lit in both rooms, adding to the traditional atmosphere.
D. P.
Cosy bar with an extensive range of board games available to play, On our visit we played Question of Sport from the 80's so it proved to be quite a challenge. Nice selection of beers. The male toilet was very cold and to be fair could do with a bit of a revamp. Overall though a nice little boozer.
A. U.
The best pub in Newcastle. Unpretentious, with friendly staff and a fantastic selection of beers. The seating outside is lovely when the sun is shining, with great views over the Ouseburn. There's always something going on - whether it's a band, one of their regular folk nights, or the magnificent Suggestibles. Well worth a visit or two...
d. m.
This is a lovely pub with a great selection at the bar. The events i've attended have been great. The silent disco is a must and the suggestibles are hilarious and entertaining. It's got a great beer garden out front with some great views of Newcastle many bridges.
K. W.
Live music, real beer, lovely people (generally). Cozy fires in winter and great summer weekends. If you're visiting Newcastle and love real ale and live music then you should try and book their B&B
b. k.
Nice old school pub good ale Good staff
J. T.
Love it. Good beer, lovely atmosphere, one of my favourite pubs xx
S. M.
This place fell out of favour, staff changes, weird food choices, obnoxious groups taking over all the space. Maybe also suffering from newer venues starting up close by. Hopefully the owners have understood trying to be all things to all people doesn't work, stick to what you did best, good ale and cider....and bring back the nachos!!!!!
S. W.
Proper local pub feel in the town.
C. M.
I should go to the Cumberland more often. Its the kind of place that has so much charisma, it's unreal. There are no pretensions about this place. Don't come here if you want a cocktail that takes twenty minutes to make and you want to listen to someone play remixes of the top 40.do come here if you want a traditional pub with people coming together with guitars, having a jam and a singalong, and drinking great beers. You can't fake this.
R.
Great beer selection, beautiful views from the garden- a little quieter than the rest of ouseburn, super relaxing. Friendly owners.
C. J.
Lovely pub with great bar staff and beer and surroundings
P. S.
Excellent selection of ales, friendly bar staff but very busy outside due to the market stalls. Whilst this is obviously a period pub on the ouseburn way, inside is looking dated rather than period, with limited seating both outside and in. However, the quality of the beer was fantastic.
L.
It was ok. I was the driver so I guess if I'd been drinking the ale selection would have been good. Soft drink selection mediocre. Was moaned about by a girl complaining that the non-regulars had ruined the queueing system for getting served at the bar which made me feel a bit like we were intruding but that is not the fault of the pub owners/management, they were polite and speedy given how busy it was 🤷♀️
J. R.
Great drinkers bar. For many one of the best places in town I believe. For others a dive I've heard also. Nice to sit outside during our limited summer months, and occasional music/food events are really popular. Check it out.
R. C.
More than a pub. A real Newcastle institution. Great beer. Great people. Great music.
s. k.
It's alright. Too many 'local pub for local people' types there when I visited. Beer OK, bar tiny, huge queues for beer. Folk music playing inside, which was nice. Surprised at cost of a pint. Too pricey. Probs not make it my local. There are far nicer pubs down the Ouseburn. I'll just leave this one to the locals.
B. A.
Awesome atmosphere and secluded location in bustling Newcastle. Live music every night and super breakfasts served in the rooms but no food during the evening. Local ciders and ales superb. Highly recommend staying here if you're going to be in Newcastle for a night or two.
S. H.
Lovely English style pub. Inside is very cute and relaxed. Beer garden outside is a good size and laid out well. Fab real ale and cider
M. C.
Great pub. Very nice beer selection. Northern alchemy's tap which is always inventive. Live music and impromptu sessions. If your in Newcastle you should pop in here
J. D.
Very old pub, wide range of live music at the weekend, not your mainstream sort. Very popular with ale drinkers and has a large outdoor area where there is often a barbecue or food van in the summer. Very cosy in the winter with a proper coal fireplace.
B. M.
Top drawer service and really.good beer. Look after the group very well and table service always ready...
K. H.
Great small pub. Great beer selection, often with local breweries on tap as well as their own brewery located on the premises. Fantastic culture and always lively with live folk music most nights
A. W.
Classic ouseburn boozer with a rough around the edges vibe and decent selection of ales and beers. Room for gigs upstairs. Large smoking area. Decently priced and attracts a good crowd of folk.
N. A.
Great pub. Huge selection of beers and loads of outdoor space makes it especially good in the summer. They have a venue upstairs and now a guesthouse as well so it covers all the bases if you're visiting the city
K. “. L.
A wonderful pub run by exceptional people. Cosy and welcoming. Great beer too. Couldn't ask for more.
J. M. F.
Always a great choice. Brilliant old boozer, choice of drink and wonderful staff. Thanks for reopening and serving us again!
P. M.
Lively pub for the post student professional arty types. Nice terrace with a view. Good choice of beers but £4 for a pint brewed round the back in a bar that has had no inward investment since before I was born by the look of it - really?????!!!!! A real shabby-tat pub for the South Gosforth corbynistas.
P. G.
Local gem..hidden away at the top of Ouseburn.
T. M.
Delightful, as ever. A pub with character and characters. Great selection of beers, chilled tunes playing in the summer sun, kids, dogs, couples, all ages. Used to be a regular when I was younger, and now that i'm back in the toon I will be again!
m. B.
Lovely old pub , beautiful outside area too .
Bar staff made us feel very welcome.
Reason for our visit was to sing with my choir .
Wish I lived nearer to this great pub , would definitely make it my local .
E. C.
Fairly bog standard pub, elevated by friendly staff and punters. Great atmosphere, if a bit small and badly layed out. Decent beer selection, with some of their own brew!
A. b.
A traditional pub that supports grass roots music. Fantastic night watching three bands ...Artio from Leeds, Stock Manager from Glasgow and the fantastic Twist Helix from Newcastle.👍
M. R. P. T.
The Cumby is just fabulous. Great vibe, like minded people and wonderful beer. What's not to like.
Just one proviso. If you are a bit dull you might not like this pub but it's still worth a try. Suitable for extroverts and introverts alike but not a lot of beige going on.
A. H.
Lovely pub with great Victorian interior. We went in a nice sunny afternoon in the spring and we could sit outside with a nice view of the city. The beer selection is of course also fantastic.
A. S.
Lived in newcastle all our lives and only found this little gem recently. We love to take our border terrier, charlie out with us. But finding dog friendly pubs in cities can be quite difficult. Well this pub is excellent. Huge range of real ales and ciders, we were drinking pints of quiet riot, 6.6% they definatly had me feeling all fuzzy. The bar is tiny but the service is excellent. Great little sun trap in the front too. We will be going again...and again and again........
T. S.
A decent boozer in a good location surrounded by other decent pubs. Doesn't serve food but dogs are welcome. When the weather is decent they hold outdoor events. Also a bed and breakfast.
L. B.
Good location, friendly atmosphere, longest ever open mic session in Newcastle. Look this place up and get down there for a night you'll remember. Drinks are reasonably priced too. 😀
T. M.
£3.0 a pint of Two by Two brewery on cask. Live music, great outdoor area
B. F.
A real pub with a great mix of people and a folky atmos. Fires in the winter and a garden for the summer - a gorgeous sunny terrace overlooking the valley. There's a venue upstairs with live music, comedy, theatre nights and all sorts of festivals.
P.
A very good traditional British bar. Good beer and hit and miss clientele. Lots of student and pompous middle class types, but just as many decent people too ! 😀 But you rarely if ever get unpleasantness here
A. T.
A decent cosy pub, always a good range of well kept beers, personally I feel it has lost a little bit of 'something' since it has extended its offerings.. probably just because it can get incredibly busy, and I'm too old and miserable to appreciate fleeting human contact with other punters
G. J.
Lovely pub, brews its own ale too.
j. k.
Great little pub. Staff always helpful in selecting the many beers available. You never quite know what entertainment to expect in here, but I've never been disappointed. Bykers/ouseburns hidden gem
A. C.
Lovely venue for folk music, traditional dance displays and decent ale. Not my favourite amongst the Ouseburn pubs, but friendly, homely and great outdoors space.
D. Y.
Good selection of ales on draught. Cosy, friendly atmosphere downstairs. There's not loads of space, but that adds to the charm. Upstairs there's a decent sized function room which often hosts live music.
K. G.
Nice beer. Friendly people. Good service. Hipster artisan vibe. Good beer garden.
V. C.
A Newcastle institution - heart of the Ouseburn.
A friendly, lively and vital pub - great drinks, awesome events, great staff. Cosy in winter and outdoors in summer. Perfect for a hot water bottle and blanket on the terrace in winter, or inside listening to folk musicians by the fire. In summer, acoustic music outdoors, sloe gin & sweaty ping pong in the back room. Friends have stayed upstairs and raved. Charming, human, great pub.
t. l.
Great music, great ale, wonderful crowd:)
C. T.
Great Ouseburn pub, featuring real ales and signature ciders. Excellent music venue upstairs and regular folk music in the downstairs snug.
A. T.
Old school. Brilliant. Staff good. Porter. Ale and cider music of. Somekind most nites if not every nite Wat more is there to say ops almost. Forgot don't go asking for. A cocktail I hate to see the look u might get
J. H.
Stumbled across this place. Sadly no tables inside (it was freezing!) but lovely pub and some lovely hot toddies if you’re cold :)
P. K.
Nice pub hidden away with some nice views and great ales, it certainly feels like a classic pub without that are you local feel, a place where everyone is welcome
A. D.
Great beers and great atmosphere
J. R.
What a great pub. Good beer and friendly service.
j. A.
Quaint and full of history - but the atmosphere is lacking, not sure exactly what it is but it's missing something.
A. H.
Good choice of beer, friendly staff, sat outside so can't comment on interior
D. B.
Never disappoints. Excellent venue. Lovely staff, great atmosphere, wonderful event.!!
J. F.
Great ale! Also superb live venue.
I. C.
Brilliant pub with a big selection of cask and craft beers, friendly staff, regular events and a good crowd. Well worth a visit.
K. S.
Small traditional pub with great character. Grass area at the back is second to none in the summer. Live bands have been known to play in the front court.
R. S.
My favourite pub in Newcastle. Simple, friendly, great folk music om Sundays and an excellent beer garden for when the sun comes out.
E. A.
This was a trusty second home in the stressful season at uni. A true change from the hustle and bustle of the toon, this place has true charm and superb energy. Highly recommend folk night with the infamous Geordie rapper dancers.
S. H.
Very nice pub with a good range of local beers. Sounded like they do music upstairs but I didn't venture up to see what that was like
D. M.
Potentially Newcastles best pub. It's perfect.
H. W.
Charmingly scruffy pub with a pleasant atmosphere. Beer was spot on, staff helpful, and the theatre upstairs, where we saw improv comedy was cosy and intimate.
A. R.
Great music and one of the town's finest pubs
P. W.
Like a pub from 1961 or there abouts.
T. K.
One of the great pubs. Great beer and cider selection. Sit near the fire in winter and outside in summer. Out There brewery in container outside.
S. S.
Nice pub
L. H.
Good, varied selection of beer. Nice staff. Makes the walk there worth it just to be cosy by the fire.
c. l.
A wonderful pub with a dedication to good beer and being part of the local community. Friendly staff and owners.
I. M.
Great throwback music venue and proper pub
P. H.
Great pub, huge selection of ales and ciders and the atmosphere is truly phenomenal, an impromptu folk jam started last time we were there on a Sunday afternoon - loved it.
F. M.
Great atmosphere at this pub. Plenty of real ale choice. Live music encouraged and ongoing events programme.
k. a.
Love this pub. Great beer and a better atmosphere. So welcoming to everyone, from suits to work clothes.
A. D.
Great old pub, wide beer selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff
C. W.
Great atmosphere & beer
A. C.
Great little local pub, class selection of beer and ciders, as well as nice spirits. Fire on in the winter, board games available
S. M.
Used to be a favourite. Sadly lost it's way, has the management changed, or lost interest?! Used to serve good food & snacks. Overtaken by other new bars and cafes opening in the Ouseburn.
А. Р.
Awesome bar. Great drinks. Nice people. Good atmosphere. Good beers and whiskies. Nice decoration. Good location.
L. R.
Lovely and underrated place however the building could use a bit more attention as it is an old building! Great crowd and good gigs!
K. M.
Cool old place with good beer. They do lots of music and comedy shows as well.
There's a seating area outside for smoking and drinking.
n. e.
What can I say. This pub is amazing! Nice pint, friendly atmosphere and the bar staff are so nice.
k. l.
Quite simply my favourite pub. Real ale, real cider, live music and friendly people. What more could you ask?
P. J. W.
Apart from being my local, Hurrah, I'd travel here for the beer, the views, the live music, the weekend events and the lovely people. One of the best pubs in the world!!!
D. M.
Nice pub, good pint but expensive. Mind a barmaid was a bit loopy, but the rest are fine.
S. D.
Great pub with fantastic selection of real ales. Can't get quite busy but it's worth it!
J. A.
This is undisputablly the best pub that is not in the crazy circus of the Toon centre. Particularly of a Spring / Summer eve. Don't tell anyone. It is the peaceful drinking hole of the Heaton Mafia.
n. g.
As old school as you could hope with a bit of hipster thrown in for good measure. Good guest ales, lovely staff and nice patio for when the sun pops his head out.
A. S.
All the beers were very hoppy and the stout had an identity crisis. The pub is lovely however.
D. S.
The Cumberland is an institution in Newcastle. Really great pub, very friendly with a good music venue upstairs. During the summer also great to sit outside.
E. C.
Excellent local pub with its own micro brewery, great outdoor food vendors, and top quality live music
N. A.
Great beer. Cheerful service. Super social distance arrangements
p. k.
Great to be back.. covid restrictions did not alter my experience on bit. Service great as usual
A. S.
I don't think much needs to be said about this ouseburn classic. Great view across the valley, massive beer garden, Huge variety of beers and of course dog friendly.

Probably the finest real ale and cider pub in the Ouseburn Valley. Lovely staff fabulous location. Events galore.

Love the feel of this pub, nice craft beers and outdoor area. Gets very crowded.

This a very old fashioned pub and actually very tatty! It does however have lots of atmosphere and live music often by amateur groups.
