Reviews of The Five Swans
i. t.
Very cheap for a central Newcastle bar. Loads of space ,table service ,the food you'd expect from a major branded restaurant chain . Family friendly. And outside seating. ..I'd also like to say it was very busy but despite this the toilets were very clean. Bonus points for that. Great place to relax
N. S.
The place is actually really big. It's like a maze inside, hehe. A great place to have a group gathering. Most importantly the food was actually nice and fresh 😊. The people working here are really friendly and approachable. I like the environment. I'd definitely come back again!
j. M.
I am still inside Five swans, I must give a feedback before I leave because I am very satisfied with the service and quantity of food .
I have been to few Wetherspoon . But this one is the best among other ones .
I ordered large breakfast. .
The food was very hot , I just loved the crusty soft toast. freshly made breakfast .
Good quality. .
And they have maintained the place so clean and tidy and good for everyone.
The staffs are excellent .
Very quick service .
Brilliant .
I had a best and filled breakfast

We took 4 grandchildren for food and we had a cheeky cocktail(delicious) 1 child is autistic and won't eat anything but McDonald's..we explained this to the lovely lad who came to advise us we couldn't take the Happy meal in. He was lovely and said yeh that is fine..enjoy lad. This made our night as other places in the city centre weren't as understanding..

This Whetherspoons pub named The Five Swans is strategically placed on a busy corner within St Marys Place. Since the weather was cheerful enough, we opted to sit out on the extended terrace. It was a perfect place to relax after a busy shopping spree in Greys Street. I opted for one of their pizzas and enjoyed a glass of Rose with it. I find their prices really reasonable and the food tasty and diverse. The decor is a bit of shabby vintage chic and lends to a homey feeling.
G. J.
Good food but have been a few degrees warmer. Fast service and nice presentation.
C. D.
Great for pre gig food and drinks at the City Hall. Was driving so good to have some low and no alcohol choices.
D. L.
Very hit or miss service. Sometimes the meals are hot, sometimes warm, often cold. But you have to complain otherwise nothing will be done about it. The tables aren't really cleaned between customers, but that seems to be typical of several Wetherspoon's. Having said that, it's Wetherspoons and not fine dining
D. M.
Prompt service, a chicken burger with a hard spot impossible to bite through. Onion rings that shed their batter like a moulting snake..
I can't give two stars due to the friendly attentive staff but I've had way better 'spoons.
L. M.
Lovely food and service this morning. A group of 3 yobbish chavs tried starting on the staff behind the bar yet all all the staff remained thoroughly calm and professional while the little boys with small man syndrome ended up making themselves look like total idiots. Well done staff and the food was delicious 👍
d. “.
The nicer of the two in the town centre, three if you count Lloyd's in The Gate, always good service and various different seating areas, some light and bright others more secluded. Very accessible outdoor seating but, as ever with wetherspoons, the toilets are a vertical challenge which has been improved slightly by adding a second staircase further through the pub.
A. K.
Great value for money young very pleasant staff who were very professional. Well done to them. Best value for money in Newcastle with great quality to back it up.
G. W.
A little bit of the beaten track but that definitely doesn't mean quiet. Good outdoor and indoor space and typically good value.
D. W.
Great place for food witherspoons.. you know what your going to get.... table service still in operation we ordered using the app. Service was reasonably quick food was nice and hot..... all good
M. F.
Great spoons pub, very busy, but very efficient staff, great prices as usual, food and meal spot on
E. J.
always very busy when I go so I tend to avoid it but not anything bad to say on the pub as a whole it’s just very busy all the time
p. b.
Nice building and atmosphere, pleasant staff, large toilets, however not suitable for wheelchair access, as there are many stairs and all toilets are upstairs. Outside seating area will be nice in the summer.
v. r.
I like the 5 swans, and so do a lot of other people as it's usually quite busy.
The beer is good and there is a range of different rooms to suit everyone.
There is an outdoor area which is popular for Geordies who like cold weather and to count how many cars use the infamous bus lane.
The only problem I have is that I find that the stairs to and from the toilets are strangely disorienting! Is it just me?
T. P.
Honestly it’s so good. It’s good for a pint, good for a cocktail, good for an alcopop. Only thing is the price. It doesn’t feel like a sspoons with the price of it. £4.99 for certain drinks isn’t great in a cheap establishment, especially when down the road it’s £1 cheaper!! Good atmosphere, but expensive drinks.
A. S.
Love this pub. Great atmosphere & great food at reasonable prices. Well worth a visit whether for just a drink or a full meal, you won't be disappointed
S. F.
My self and my sister in laws enjoyed a few drinks and a meal there while we had a good natter. You can order on your phone as well.
R. G.
Visited after a gig at the uni for a couple of late night drinks. Friendly staff and got served pretty quickly, nice and big area with plenty of seats. Food was being served aswell.
W. F.
Good and fair "Fish and Chips". The mediterranean salad though was a bit disapointing as I could not see the traditional vegetables such kind of salad must have and also did not feel the freshness.
P. M.
loved it , nice pleasant and helpful staff , drinks at decent prices too
M. S.
Fantastic place to hangout with your family and kids. Food is great as well. I personally like the BBQ chicken pizza here. The place is quite spacious and can accommodate many peoples. It's very busy in the weekends specially in the evenings. Staff is polite and helping as well. Would recommend this place to everyone.
J. W.
I have only ever passed through Newcastle and last night was my first time actually stopping for a pint in "the toon", to meet my sister after she had been at a concert with her partner.
So we arranged to meet at Wetherspoons, by which it appears she meant The Five Swans as I learned on my arrival from the Haymarket Metro station and I really liked the bar.
Unfortunately I only had enough time to have just the one pint and we had to leave as soon as I had finished my drink, otherwise I would have more than happily stayed for several more pints.
D. C.
I drink Erdinger which in other Newcastle pubs is £5.60 it is only £3.85 in Wetherspoons
Although always busy it is like a rabbit Warren so you will nearly always find a seat. I have never ate here but I assume the food will be on par with other Wetherspoon pubs
M. P.
Not enough staff to clear tables after people leave. dirty plates piled up &new customers having to flag staff down to clear them especially at busy periods.feel sorry for the staff because they look stressed & overwhelmed.
L. M.
Lovely food, quick service & polite staff
L. A.
Cheap and cheerful and right in the heart of Newcastle, it's always been busy whenever we visit here and that's a good sign!
g. r.
Nice breakfast fast service food cooked well loads of seats as it's a big spoons
T. D.
Nice spoons, it's my favourite in town and has a great outdoor seating area with cute fairy lights
E. N.
Very efficent service drinks at a reasonable price xx
J. A.
Very busy which meant slow service but everything was still great.
S. P.
A fantastic English pub atmosphere for a Yankee. Of note, you order your food through an app. Once you have it, ordering is easy. Food is at a great price and tasty. Gins were fantastic and a good selection of beers. Food came out fast and service was great. Really happy we came here
S. M.
Really good atmosphere nice staff ..good food and drink ..would recommend
A. D.
Its a Wetherspoons!
So you know the formula: an interesting old building, done up to a nice standard. Inside you find an extensive selection of beers, wines and spirits and a wide ranging food menu with themed days during the week.
Like all 'Spoons pubs its the staff that differentiate the good from the bad and the staff here are great. All friendly and knowledgeable.
S. A.
Nice food good service
B. S.
Always a great pint in here. A very popular pub.
J. F.
Busy venue, good atmosphere, food enjoyable and the toilets (important when out) were very clean & numerous!!!
I enjoyed my visit.
K. L.
Nice food. Gets quite busy but there's loads of tables
S. D.
Normal Wetherspoons experience. Nice, cheap and quick food. Typical atmosphere, which might not be to everyone's taste but I'll take whatever I can get at that price
a. c.
Very reasonable prices here. Basic weatherspoons food menu available this place is always busy.
N. M. O.
A bit noisy, but prices, service and drinks worth it. Haven't tried food yet but friends told me it's really good for those prices.
R. W.
Went to the toilet got lost, had to ask the chef where in England I was.lovely outdoor area tho and lovely staff.eventually got back to my table and missed summer.
Q. R.
Decent enough place, took a while to be served what with other people just pushing past you at the bar but that's Newcastle I suppose.
B. M.
Nice pub, service a bit slow on food but overall really good
V. H.
Lovely pub, friendly staff, quick service via the app and fair prices for drinks and good food.
C. A.
Loved it, great atmosphere, great drinks n prices second to none. A winner
V. B.
In early for pre match breakfast, good standard & well made. Always worth a visit.
P.
Friendly staff, good prices for food and drink. Sat outside, great atmosphere. Pity some lagers weren't available and staff's time was taken up mainly with App customers. Having said that, enjoyed our day.
g. r.
Nice breakfast fast service food cooked well loads of seats as it's a big spoons
M. K.
Do try Chicken Tikka masala specially on Thursdays. Good Cocktails, very authentic samosa and amazing fish and chips.
G. M. F.
Another Wetherspoons establishment the other end of Newcastle upon Tyne & just a stroll from the centre & all the shops nearby park Churches and museums also more University Buildings nice atmosphere here and a real diversity of clientele all ages ...you KNOW what you get when you visit a Wetherspoons pub so no need to say any more!
C. D.
Always enjoy the breakfast.. really tasty and the staff are lovely.
J. C.
Nice place, slow with online drinks but fast with food. Nice 4 for £5 on sours.
L. A.
Cheap and cheerful and right in the heart of Newcastle, it's always been busy whenever we visit here and that's a good sign!
T. D.
Nice spoons, it's my favourite in town and has a great outdoor seating area with cute fairy lights
L. P.
Food had been sat on the hot hold for a while, chicken breast bites were rubbery
M. C.
Endless tea and coffee. I had scrambled eggs on toast with bacon. Eggs tasteless and needed to add salt and pepper. Otherwisre ok. You get what you pay for.
J. J. S.
Probably the busiest 'Spoons in Newcastle with everything you would expect with the added bonus of happier staff compared with Mile Castle.
N. S.
We have some great memories from here, and it's a shame we haven't been able to make more over the last year. One of the highlights of our social calendar is SSAGO Goes To 'Spoons! The peas are on point too.
H. C.
Good place to go before a gig. Bustling atmosphere and very helpful and friendly staff
S. H.
Cheap and cheerful right in the centre of Newcastle. Quick and easy food at a reasonable price.
A. C. D.
Not a bad pub better since refurbished canny staff and cheaper than a lot of places now because it's a Weatherspoon 🙄😛
J. M.
Extremely busy on Saturday 16th, don't come for food as you won't get a table, luckily I only had drinks so could stand.
Poor selection of ales, very weak and one went off when I ordered it, felt obliged to accept a one I did not like.
Been a number of times over the years and staff turnover is regular to the point where no-one really has the expertise they used like when I worked at spoons.
Due to this the service is not the best.
If you want better service go to a quieter spoons
S. C.
Far too busy when we visited, three and four deep at the bar with not a mask to be seen anywhere.. You could be forgiven for thinking there was never a pandemic. I realize restrictions have been eased but it seemed there was no common sense here and no attempt to limit numbers inside.
Beer nothing exceptional.
J. A.
Very busy which meant slow service but everything was still great.
G. D.
Simple nice pub. Not amazing but really worth a visit
n. h.
Great Weatherspoons location and usual good beer, food and service
D. H.
Nice and cheap pints and meals, all day breakfast included, great place, great atmosphere
A. S.
Busy pub with pleasant staff.Busy when we went . Food menu getting boring now after covid changes and food not as cheap as it was. Some good drink offers .
R. A.
Lovely pub and good atmosphere. Cheapest drink in city 😊
L. M.
Lovely food, quick service & polite staff
E. N.
Very efficent service drinks at a reasonable price xx
d. m.
Great selection of beers and ciders food watch out fir manager specials
B. D.
We popped in here for a breakfast and have to say it was superb. Good quality food, well prepared & served piping hot. You can't get vexed at the prices either... Surprisingly good coffee too.
P. W.
Very busy when we got there, was able to find a table, ordered food and drink via app and we didn't have to wait too long. Good service
A. S.
A lively place frequented by students, shoppers and city workers alike, this place always has a buzz about it. A great place for anyone who likes to people watch and/or eavesdrop.
Being a Whetherspoon's pub means you don't have to wait in a queue if you have their app. Service was prompt, even on a busy Friday afternoon.
S. o. K. V.
Unfortunately this is not the best of public houses in Newcastle upon Tyne.
This Wetherspoons is ok but could be so much better with little.
Order on the app to an absolute age to ride at the, over 15 minutes, the food arrived before my drink and was just thumped on the table.
R. C.
Another good local wetherspoon's pub with lots of real ales . I know the usual stuff drinks and food found at a weather spoons
This pub might not suit some people has lots of different levels and steep stairs to the toilet.
V. S.
Went and had some food. I had a vegan beyond burger. It was delicious.
S. T.
Looks like a Chinese from the outside but inside it's a lovely old building which we enjoyed our drink served from very friendly staff
S. J.
Good pub loads off seats, decent food n drink
R. T.
It's a spoons pub so you know what you're getting. Table hadn't been cleaned in a while and was claggy
A. S.
Although the service was fast and the food was hot, i was not happy with the "Ultimate Burger" that i had ordered, the burger unfortunately was overcooked and there was no burger sauce (part of the burger) so overall very dry, i wouldn't go as far as to say i won't be back but i wasn't pleased on this occasion (and my last one before lockdown too) friendly staff who you can tell work very hard 5* for the staff! Unfortunately the whole experience wasn't worthy of 5* in my opinion
E. B.
Good pub nice staff a little expensive for food if im honest
D. O.
Food was kinda sad looking and tasted not great.
U. S.
Everything is fairly clean, staff are nice and friendly. Food is fairly good, just the service time is a good 20 minutes or more wait. However, this place is huge so that's to be expected. (We only go on a night time)
R. J.
Went for breakfast
Had the traditional breakfast
Refills on coffee free
Busy as half term
But would return as a typical spoons
T. M.
Great place, great beer. Plenty of room at the moment so you don't feel as though your in a crowded place.
The app works great so you get speedy table service from polite staff. What's not to like👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
J. H.
Good wetherspoons, breakfast did come out cold (but seems standard for wetherspoons at this point)
H. C.
A lovely relaxing bar where you can chat have a drink and a nice reasonable meal.
K. P.
Nice food Great staff good price
J. M.
Great atmosphere, good staff and chil friendly 👍 also good food
P. H.
Popped in for a pint & pizza. Rapid service excellent food
K. O.
Great wetherspoons, cheap as chips.
J. H.
Absolutely packed but the App service worked really well and the service was with a smile.
k. w.
I love coming to five swans cos it's friendly and the service is fantastic the food is absolutely brilliant not a doubt in my mind there's nothing wrong about this place we'll they could of kept the men's room toilets in check cos some customers intend to block them and the staff don't bother sorting the situation out that my only problem with five swans but everything else brilliant 😊🙄
B. B.
Favourite Spoons in the Newcastle area.
Decent size beer garden - though it needs better clarification as to which areas are smoking and non-smoking.
A bit of a maze inside with lots of separate areas creating a more cozy feel than an open-plan pub.
E. G.
The pub was really busy but we ordered drinks and food on the app. Good service and pizzas great for the price.
M. B.
Prices and food was very good, especially for a large city.👏👏
T. M.
Busy nice place to meet up
Toilets are a bit of a hike and an adventure
C. B. (. m.
Nice food. More than i expected. Lovely Drink which was well presented. Outside seating too
J. B.
Very busy, one item is of food was served cold and had to be replaced
D. G.
Was great to be able to go out for food again. Was a bit on the chilly side but well worth it. We ordered the food and drinks using the app and they were brought to our table quite quickly and the staff were all brilliant and very helpful 👍 👍 👍
A. C.
Great watering hole - typical Weather spoon pub - service pretty good considering it was quite busy - great location for the Newcastle City Hall which is just around the corner - we would certainly recommend this place to everyone
P. S.
For a weatherspoons this place was a cut above the rest by a mile. Service was great and the food even seemed better than other weatherspoons. Also it didn't have worn out sticky furnishings so I would give it more stars if I could.
K. T.
Nice relaxed atmosphere after a hard day shopping 😁
P. A.
I like The Five Swans. I went there to meet friends prior to going to see The Specials at Newcastle City Hall. We had a good time, but every time I.ordered drinks on the Wetherspoons app, there was less choice in drinks as things were going out of stock at a rate of knots. There was less choice when we went back after The Specials had finished. I know that there are supply chain problems at the minute and are beyond the pub's control, but it was still a bit disappointing.
L. H.
A haiku about the five swans
The five swans spoons pub,
A maze like boozer, cheap drinks.
Still just a spoons though.
r. r.
An oldie worldie kind of pub lots of little nooks to sit and wild your time away
V. S.
Drinks only while we waited for the queues to go down at the City Hall, was really busy but got served pretty quickly. Always good value and has loads of outdoor seating.
D. J.
Good fast service, reasonably priced and good value for money.
J. A.
Large busy pub with outdoor seating and cheap beer.
L. C.
Great cheap after work drink.
Good beer garden
L.
Came here with friends after visiting winter wonderland. The food was good and staff were friendly..would definitely come back xx
B. D. M.
Good venue for food and drinks in a great location
G. P.
Clean, quick and good service. The usual food and the restaurant is nice. We ran away from the other 2 in town the one at the station crowded and small the one at the Gate Mall terrible without proper number of staff and dirty.
M. N.
Track and trace and their ordering on line doesnt work on my phone i have to get my friend in my bubble to do it. The food was delicious had curry this time needs a bit more rice on the plate but the curry was nice and tasty. I normally order the butter chicken burger with chips or their skinny burger with salad both taste good. Their pizza is nice too. Staff are good
A. W.
Great place to visit for a drink.
A++++
P. L.
Sat outside , good space to enjoy a drink. Despite 5 people working behind the bar had to wait a while to get served. Ordered food a bit cold when it arrived.
G.
Great table service if you use the app, the toilets are about a mile away but this seems standard for a wetherspoons
S.
Busy busy but worth it. Traditional pub with a good atmosphere.
W. B.
Nice breakfast food was hot and service was great.
J. G.
Food was lovely and service was efficient
J. H.
Great selection of beers, dantastic prices.
M. S.
Visited Newcastle for the day, popped into the five swans for a quick bite and drink, clean, friendly place, staff very polite. Nice food, quick service, would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area.
J. C.
Ran out of ribs as the service started but was a some what nice meal
J. G.
Very enjoyable, meal nice, clean and tidy
P. S.
Usual Wetherspoons, no frills but great for the price
J. C.
Plenty of choice beers and lagers all at sensible prices, seating easily accessed on various levels. Usually plenty of Bar Staff serving.
T. R.
Excellent apart from toilets which are a hike to get to. However there are disabled toilets on the ground floor. Feel more could be done for those that are disabled.
S. H.
Good bar with good priced drinks and food.
C. L.
Excellent and reasonably priced food.. Good selection of ales.. Can get rather busy on an evening and weekend
D. A.
Lovely pub just in the center of new castle, very close too the quayside, the staff are really pleasant and helpful, the food is good with a great menu and very cheap.
Plenty of cask ales on offer there is also a large seating area outside, I would recommend you give this pub a try you won't regret it
N. B.
Typical Wetherspoons Pub which is always busy. Staff here are brilliant.
P. S.
A large busy Weatherspoons pub. On several levels so expect plenty of stairs. The gents toilets are up one of the steepest set of stairs I've ever see. Usual Weatherspoon drinks and food.
E. A.
slays but stop rejecting my id please im literally 20 xx
S. S.
Great little pub really good atmosphere
E. E.
Very organised queuing system lovely duty manager taking names for track and trace never stopped cleaning tables too..
Very pleasant chatting to people was worth waiting nice meal and refreshing drink excellent value. Will return
M. M.
Not the best weatherspoons
S. M.
Nice beer garden, perfect location and cheap prices
J. W.
Called in for tea nice and quiet beautiful steak cooked with perfection
A. C.
Fantastic Food, Fantastic service. Even though the place is jumping you can still get served and they know who to serve next. Definitely worth a visit
S. H.
Decent outdoor space, and table service spot on. Not the venues fault but there were a few loud smack head types, which meant we just stayed for 1 drink.
C. H.
Ok Weatherspoons bar. Only had chips, hallumi and onion rings but fresh cooked and yummy. Safe with table service still happening and using the app fast service too
R. C.
For piece and quiet, for that calm place that offers so much
L. H.
I do love a good pub.
G. W.
Busy bar food is cheap nothing spectacular.pub food ..Next to city centre and shops
D. S.
Typical large Wetherspoons. Popular with students in the area.
V. H.
Good price staff very friendly and efficient
K. A. D.
Great place.. perfect get away for a few hours... Great place to just relax with boo or bae or just friends hanging out....food was also good..I had a panini when I was there and the staff too were quite friendly
R. G.
Friendly staff
Really great breakfast
P. B.
Had to cue to get in, and use NHS covid app or just give name and phone number. Once in pub clean and staff very friendly and helpful. Food and drink good and very reasonable prices. Would definitely recommend.
A. K.
Top beer selection, BrewDog Punk IPA on tap! Busy venue but we'll worth a look in.
j. w.
First time in pub nor a bad place
J. W.
Lush atmosphere, drinks extremely well prided
T. Q.
We were sitting outside in the patio area. Ok bit noisy from the traffic. But hey ho what more could you ask for in a city centre. Overall very good time 😀
J. B.
Very nice pub. Friendly staff who like to laugh a little 2 much. Food at times over done
M. C.
What you would expect for a Wetherspoons. Drinks service via the app took over 20 minutes.
J. C.
This is a busy pub so be prepared to wait ! Not one of the biggest ive been in but its got lots of little seating areas with a lovely big seating area outside to watch the world go by . Gets very busy on match days so can be a bit overcrowded .
C. C.
By far the best place in jesmond and very highly recommended.
T. M.
Brilliant selection of cheap beers and delicious food. Perfect for students on a budget. Can be busy at meal times however, this makes it difficult to get a table. On the other hand their beer garden is about to be extended so hopefully this will help to rectify the problem by summer.
J. B.
The service at the bar was a bit slow and it was not too busy at the time. The bar member of staff however was very friendly. The food we ordered was served in good time and was very nice. The table was cleared quite quickly after we finished our meal. The overall experience was good.
M. M. F.
A fine burger and my first Newcastle Spoons excellent
P. W.
Good breakfast and cosy on a miserable day also decent out door seating
R. A.
Not a bad morning out for food and drinks
R. A.
If you like a very busy place this is the spot to be. Popular with students. Nice beer garden. Staff have a lot to do but are pleasant enough. Has separate rooms. Has awkward steps down from the bar. But we'll worth a visit.
D. L.
Been here several times. Food is always nice and very cheap. Bar staff very friendly and helpful.
P. W.
What can I say .It's a Wetherspoons. Good priced food and drink good atmosphere
J. P.
Lovely place for food and very reasonable.
M. C.
Food was hot very nice weatherspoons sometimes serves food a bit on cool side but here it was better
P. E.
Great place for drinks before toon match
G. S.
Nice venue to sit out side of an evening for a few drinks and some food. Very reasonable for food and drinks as you would expect from a wetherspoons.
M. L.
Like this place for food and a good pint it's got a good atmosphere always seems busy when me and the wife visit.. usually Sat..got some nice little nooks n crannies but plenty of room
P. R.
Nice meal
Good service as usual
And all at an affordable price
A very pleasant afyernoon
J. F.
Good English Breakfast (for its price - both the normal and the veggie option)
M. A.
A Wetherspoons pub,large,good service,and pretty pleasant.
